Turning Bush-McCain Hug into an Icon

By Michael D. Shear
SEDONA -- Democrats are planning to use images of Sen. John McCain embracing President George Bush on billboards and in bus stops around Minneapolis and St. Paul next week, part of an effort to drive home their message that McCain represents "more of the same" in Washington.

The images (one version of which is featured above) show McCain and Bush in a hearty embrace against a black background. The words "More Politics as Usual" and "Does this look like change to you?" are written above and below the image.

The ad will run in more than 20 bus shelters, Democratic sources say, including four that serve the Xcel Center, where the RNC is holding its convention. It will also run on a mobile billboard that will follow McCain from Dayton, Ohio, into the convention.

I worked my way up from the bottom. I was poor my whole life. I got a college education, and then a professional degree, paid for with student loans. So don't tell me what I did and didn't do. I don't owe anybody anything! Affirmative action needs to end!

If voters who have supported Bush and Corruption for two terms end up supporting McCain, they will be getting another 4 years of the same lies. Wake up as you were duped by Bush and Corruption and if you haven't learned in eight years the damage done to not only the American economy but also the image of the United States around the world, then you are as delusional as President George Walker Bush himself the Crawford, Texas Village Idiot.

African Americans have to get over the slavery.
Affirmative action is so unfair that all the people in US pay for the crime that some DEAD white men committed.
If you don't agree with communism or socialism, I don't see how you can agree this so socialist affirmative action. If you do agree, see what happened in this communist-controlled countries, eventually they had to resort to capitalism.
You need to out and earn respect from others, not sitting home or on street to get it.

McCain is a kept man.

The guy is an out of touch Bush loving crook.

In a speech he dared American workers to go work for $50/hr picking crops. He said American workers "couldn't do it."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWOZKeOauNI

When a guy in the audience said heck yeah... I'll do it for $50/hr, sign me up... McCain dismissed him saying he couldn't do it. He wasn't capable.

Oh really?

And Mexicans can? $50/hr? I think Americans would do that work for $50/hr, John. I would.

McCain doesn't know what money is, he has no concept of what people earn.

He's such a typical Republican. Totally clueless. Rich silverspoon fed egoist with a chip on his shoulder the size of Texas.

I guess since he was a POW, he figured he could just marry a trust fund baby and forget about being a man the rest of his life.

$50/hr John?

Americans not capable?

F you, John. And F your Republican party.

Was the former leader of Iraq not killing innocent people? (THERE IS NO OTHER QUESTION) Or was that just us republicans making up stories?"

Innocent people are being killed all over the world and in the US. Why are we not doing anything about that? Why pick Iraq when there were much more violations of humanity?

They wanted Iraq for other reasons. They told you it was because they wanted to help innocent people and YOU ACCEPTED THAT without looking any deeper.

How about if they told you that they wanted a sustained military action to pump billions into the defense industry. They won't tell you that...no it's "We want to help people and spread democracy...praise Jesus". And that you buy hook, line and sinker.

Posted by: Cranial
------------------
Is that the reason McCain is saying why we went to war in Iraq? Yes, Saddam and his gang killed people who did not agree with them. The REAL reason we went to war was that Pres Busy, Cheney, Rumfeldt, and McCain wanted to go to war was because of THE OIL!! So, they concocted a story that there were masses of "WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCION"; funny thing is, the inspectors had not found any!! Once we got in there, none were found!! So McCain, the warmonger, sent our troops to an unnecessary war, thousands killed, thousands injured, and McCain has voted against ALL GI bills that would benefit them. McCain didn't even show up for the last GI bill vote extending education opportunities to veterans. McCain said "WE WERE BEING TOO GENEROUS!"!!! McCain would make a LOUSY commander-in-chief; use and abuse the troops and deny them proper medical care, dump the in quarters full of roaches and crumbling walls and overflowing toilets until they finally get treated then returns them to these same dispicable housing for their recuperation!! This not only happened at Walter Reed, it happened at many more military hospitals. McCain voted against bills that would remedy these things!! Hey folks, these services members could be yours and my kids!!

Dear Bob .... is it too much to ask to remember that a group was enslaved, transported chained in ships (by white Europeans) across the ocean, hounded by the American pure-white KKK, depicted as clowns & idiots by racist Hollywood, relegated to the back of the bus by "Southern" bus CEO's, denied the vote by 50 states a the nation, ridiculed in the media, denied schooling by taxing towns & cities instead of people, denied access to all-white neighborhoods & add to the list the thousands of other denigrations & inhumanity suffered over centuries, yes centuries ... no so-called "white" group could survive the onslaught suffered if the tables were reversed (i.e., the whites in chains) that Affirmative Action is only a very small sign of retribution & understanding is clear to many, many people in the US today & internationally for a long time. I shake me head when you seem to think Affirmative Action takes something away from anybody in the US.

You need to think about our past sins & the human suffering we have caused others a little more ... just a little more. Try it.

One racist thing that Obama has done was to steadfastly support Affirmative Action, which allows schools to accept a student because of his race over another more-qualified student. If race is the reason, then it's racist. Also, you can't explain affirmative action away by saying that the "effects" of past racism are being redressed, because affirmative action policies don't take into account the social status of minority applicants. Why should Kobe Bryant's kids, who are black but have all the privileges in the world and all the advantages that upper class whites have, be able to get into a school over a white applicant who is poor simply because of race?

Fair enough DC. I'm just saying Obama isn't going to be a "bad thing" for this country as alot of right wingers would have you believe. If, in the event Obama gets elected, and the whole thing comes crashing down, you can tell me "I told you so", but until then I'm rolling the dice and putting my support behind Obama. McCain reminds me way too much of Bush and, in fact, runs with a lot of the same crowd Bush does. Can't do it. The Bush Administration was a utter catastrophe. Good luck to you though.

I'm not a Bush supporter but I will never be an Obama supporter. EXPERIENCE is important and "CHANGE" which is the only thing that comes out of his mouth takes time! It doesn't happen overnight. The only change that he will make happen is taking us as a country into a deeper whole. The economy wasn't threatened by Bush buddy, it was a mix of a lot of things. Financial housing loans that were aweful, rise in gas prices (which was bound to happen), and a lengthy war which has to be faught. The Middle East is a confused place and their hatred for us is strong. We need people over their for the rest of our existence.

LL,

Get your facts straight, Obama wants to raise taxes for those making over $250,000 back to the same level they were during the first Bush Admistration in the 1980's, which is considered a normal level, even by fiscally responsible Republicans. Read it for yourself if you don't believe me:

http://online.wsj.com/public/article_print/SB121867201724238901.html

As well, are you familar with a little something called the Federal Deficit? Might I remind you that the Federal Deficit is at an outrageously all-time record high as we ship all our jobs overseas and spend trillions of dollars on a war that we're stuck with?

I know you're afraid of Obama because of all the bad things you hear on TV and radio but they're just fear tactics my friend, to keep the middle class at, or just below, even.

Being a POW does not immediately qualify you to be President. In fact, the physical and psychological trauma caused by 6 years as a POW should immediately DISQUALIFY him from being President. He's unstable, he's dangerously unhealthy, and he's mentally destroyed.

I will concede the point that Obama chose Biden because of his lack of experience in military affairs. Who would McCain have chosen to make up for his lack of experience pertaining to the economy? Seeing as all the other Republicans surrounding McCain think that the economy is completely stable, I doubt he would have filled that hole.

If you want permanent occupation of Iraq, higher taxes for low-income families, no affordable health care, $5+ a gallon gas, then please, vote McCain.

If you want tax breaks for the poor, proper re-assignment of our military, peaceful solutions for world problems, affordable health care, and a stabilizing economy, vote Obama.

Many don't know how to navigate the internet and don't know where to find balanced sources of information. If you could read these released documents from the library of Congress, you would be disgusted at what our government has done and is capable of. Of course, you gotta go on the net to find them, and the news outlets don't re-explore old news. As a result, older folks get their information watching FOX and aren't re-educated about the past. The smartest thing that Bush has said is that mistakes are easier to catch in hindsight. I admit, that when I am older, I will probably be senile like my grandparents, and although I love them alot, they are still stuck in the Cold War mentality. They drive like maniacs and call me by my dad's name. I don't want my grandparents to vote because they are slightly out of touch with reality, and they haven't even been tortured in a war prison! Imagine how out-of-touch Mc Cain is, I definately don't want him behind the wheel of this country.

money, its only money... nevertheless, a nation that sends 700$ billion/yr to oil-producers at large & blissfully drives SUVs (+50% of US motorists) is not really concerned about national debt - debt was, unfortunately, not a cocktail party conversation ... oops, until now! damn! while others (cf. Toyota) were perfecting hybrids (2008 models: 4L/100Km) America was blissfully driving outdated Made in America cars, all the while tossing US Dollars in the ocean off Dubai. Republicans & other Oilmen, Cheney, Bush Sen. & Jr. wouldnt be seen dead in an efficient cars - heck no, that's not American! That's communist!

While under Clinton as President the EPA still worked a little, under them Bush Sen & Jr. there, the EPA stood for "Evermore Pollution (in) America" ... so here, after 8yrs of Republican ingenuity: banks broken, housing-market shot, two non-ending wars, millions of out-dated SUVs, outdated environmental products (i.e., no solar, wind, bio or thermal innovation or industry), international image in tatters,
Russia, the Bear, takes pieces of Georgia - Bush saw a real friend in Putin... and on it goes, a real Rep success story.

And then there are those luminairies who want Rep McCain ... one could ask, is there any hope for rationality & sanity left among homo sapiens of the Republican sort?

"I do not respect your stand on war. You did not so object when Clinton fought the fearsome Bosnias, or the terrible Hatians, or those world dominators in Mogadishu. Hypocrites. Thus, your position is partisan trash, not moraled principal."

I would counter that our engagement in Bosnia has been successful, and we entered into it with wide international approval.

In the other two engagements (Haiti & Somalia) we had a limited mission. We have had a history of engagement with Haiti going back many years, when this country decided that it would fall under our sphere of influence. In the case of Somalia, when it was clear that the people were nuts and ill prepared to have any reasonable form of government, we pulled out instead of wasting anymore American lives. I am always amazed at how quickly many Republicans just bypass the over 4,000 deaths that have happened in Iraq. I hear talking points like "we haven't been bombed since 9/11". I would ask you to answer this question for me then. How many American servicemen must die before we bring them home? How long will we justify their deaths with the prevention of an possible attack that may happen again or not? What happens when we double the deaths on 9/11 in Iraq? Is that a greater tragedy? Maybe triple?

The great "decider" made the decision to get us into this mess, and it will be his party that marched in lock step behind him that will suffer the consequences. In many ways I feel sorry for President Obama, because he will have to face a litany of problems that have been created by possibly the worst President in the history of our republic. It is almost to great a mountain for any one man or party to climb. I pray, and wish him luck and perseverance, because he will need it.

McCain is stuck in the past and he's counting on his so called "war hero" status to win the office. He failed in war when he was captured and if he is magically elected he will fail as a president.

Bush was a train wreck, McCain would be a disaster.

Bob, I'm surprised at you. He's one for you to illustrate Nixon's radical views of Presidental power. Note how this is a precusor to the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld view that the Executive branch of our federal government should have absolute control and power (which, by the way, is extremely radical):

"Richard Nixon infamously told David Frost in a 1977 interview that, by definition, "when the president does it (breaks the law), that means it is not illegal."

Now BIll, do you really want a president, Deomocrat or Republican having Supreme power without the checks and balances outlined in our Consitution?

If you need to know more about he Radical views of our current Administration and how these views began in the Nixon Administration I recommend the following article:

Innocent people are being killed all over the world and in the US. Why are we not doing anything about that? Why pick Iraq when there were much more violations of humanity?

They wanted Iraq for other reasons. They told you it was because they wanted to help innocent people and YOU ACCEPTED THAT without looking any deeper.

How about if they told you that they wanted a sustained military action to pump billions into the defense industry. They won't tell you that...no it's "We want to help people and spread democracy...praise Jesus". And that you buy hook, line and sinker.

Geez, look at all the whiners calling any Republican or conservative, bad names!
If they could think for themselves the country would be so much better off!
My education wasn’t PC correct, but we were taught to search for the truth and evaluate and correlate what we learned from reading…in that search.
(Maybe one just has to live long enough to recognize the mistakes one makes in their earlier years)
I was one of these Democrat voters many years ago. Up til 1985 or so. I was just like the people here. I thought I knew what was going on because I watched all the news and read everything I could get my hands on. Back, before 1985 or so,EVERYTHING I read was “left-leaning” politics.
Of course I didn’t know that. How could I? If everything you are exposed to is of one persuasion…How do you know about the OTHER persuasions?
There WAS “The Washington TIMES”, but everything I read said “this moonie paper” was trash!
They had me convinced until I couldn’t get news of the Contra-Sandinista War” from ANYWHERE BUT The Washington TIMES (WT).
Reading the WT and comparing them to everybody else I found out the WT was RIGHT 95% of the time. HISTORY PROVED THEM “RIGHT”, not me or you or the New York Times.
You can’t fake that. Your information is either proved right or WRONG by history.
You Democrats are on the WRONG SIDE! The Republicans didn’t stick to their core values and started “acting” like Democrats with the spending of our tax money. Of course they were only ACTING and not the real BIG spenders! NO. They are only IMITATION Democrats.
Some of you are too young to have been around when Democrats drove the country into debt, made us dependent on foreign oil by stopping DRILLING on the OCS and everywhere else, halted building nuclear power plants and oil refineries.
You vote for these Democrats for, usually, ONE ISSUE of concern to YOU. My friends they have FAR MORE in mind that will screw, YOU and everybody else.
Know how the Republicans got the majority in House and Senate in 1996? The Democrats f**k*d up SO BAD, even the DEMOCRAT VOTERS said, ” ENOUGH!”.
PLEASE. READ EVERYTHING WITH A THOUGHTFUL EYE toward finding the TRUTH and forget “party politics” that will only favor the biggest and best liars.
With that, I will only add; This is a make it or BREAK it election for our country. Unfortunatly, the choices are the same, “BAD” and “WORSE”.
Hope you figure this out with your own true intelligence and throw out what you haven’t lived through and SEEN “truth” exposed by history. Go back and see what the Democrats have done in 45 years of having the majorities in House and Senate. They caused most of the problems we have today.

One thing I've noticed while reading the comments is how defensive and polarized they are about "their side" like this is a football game or something. Instead of Red vs. Blue it should be the people vs. the politicians. You're all buying into this name calling game reminiscent of Pro wrestling.

Meanwhile the country is in bad shape while politicians take care of their large dollar donors and ignore everyone else. If you don't get it by now "Politicians take money in exchange for favors". This means selling out you and me. We don't get this because they have us screaming "Red" and "Blue" at each other.

What do we have now? More government secrecy than ever, government supression of science in the EPA, FDA and NASA. The EPA and FDA are protecting corporate interests and not lives any more. Weakening of environmental protections that have been in place for 30 years. Immunity for law breaking corporations. Probably the worst is the partisanship in the hiring of government law enforcement who will turn a blind eye to criminal activity for party members while agressively prosecuting members of the opposing party. Smacks of the SS.

Quit letting the TV party loudmouths tell you what to think. The two party system is broken. We had a hope named Ron Paul this election. Who did we end up with but the two most heavily funded candidates in each party. That should tell you right there about who is controlling politics in this country.

Republicans instinctively know what most dems dont, or choose to ignore:

(1)Bush is not hated as much as radical dems wish. It was enough to whisk dems to control of Congress, but approval ratings for that body clearly shows there is something worse than Bush, and there could be a presidential candidate worse than Carter (Obama)! McCain has virtually voted against every bill that would improve things for our military; he didn't even show up for the the last GI bill! And you think he would make a good CIC?? Send the troops to fight unnessary wars, do not give them the equipment they so desperately need to protect themselves while figting that war, thinks giving them more needed benefits is being "TOO GENEROUS TO OUR TROOPS" WHEN THEY ARE ACTUALLY RISKING THEIR VERY LIFES TO FIGHT THAT UNNECESSARY WAR??

(2) Congress inability to get movement on the Iraq war proves most Americans are not as rabid on this as dems might wish.

(3) Fundamental losses in key Supreme Court rulings (gun control) remind conservatives what a democratic president might mean.

(4) The moniker "McSame" has not affected McCain supoporters - he had the lead over the weekend and Obama only has a 1 point head after the keynote speaker, Hillary.

Summary, this might be cute, but wont move moderates, and certainly wont move conservatives.

BOB: Wishful thinking. George is heartily disliked by everyone BUT the 26%ers. Definite fact about that.

It is the democratic Party's proposal that they can transfer that unpopularity from George to John. Making the oncoming candidate pay for the failings of the previous President is old, and mostly effective, campaign tactics. George Bush is President BECAUSE the Republicans were able to Tie Al Gore to Monica Lewinski. Sans that wondrous bit of transference, Al would now be completing a successful, prosperous, peaceful eight years as President.

As long as the Democrats can do to John what the Republicans did to Al, (and the Dems have a lot more ammunition than the Repubs did) they can overcome the one obstacle that remains in this race. There are just too damn many white voters who can't bring themselves to vote for a NON-WHITE CANDIDATE. Were Barack lily white, the Republicans would be looking at losing by a three to one margin.

If Republicans believe that Americans are unaffected by the loss of thousands of their loved one's from a war brought on as a result of fabricated intelligence pushed before the American people.

That they will look the other way as they stare at that empty chair at the dinner table.

That they will look away when they see their sons and daughter walking with a prosthetic leg as a result of being maimed in this illegal war.

They have another thing coming.

These images working class American's, whose children populate the U.S. Military have to live with every single day.

It is not so much that the Democrats deserve to be in the White House as it is that the Republicans are more deserving of a Jail House.

Seneca...I have to disagree with you. This is a brilliant strategy. The Democrats have made it known that they plan to tie Bush and McCain policies together.

This forces the McCain camp to find ways to distance themselves from Bush during the Republican Convention. Bush is still the hero of the conservative base of the Republican party. By distancing himself from Bush at the Republican Convention, many supporters of Bush will give McCain a hard time.

For all the talk of the Obama and Clinton folks needing to be united, this is equally true of McCain within the Republican Party. McCain will need the same level of support in the Republican Party as GW Bush did to have a chance at defeating Obama.

OMG. A mobile billboard that will follow McCain from Ohio into the convention?! That's too funny.

(P.S. I wish the Obama campaign hadn't previewed this to the MSM; McCain will have time to thwart the move, and the MSM will have time to denigrate it.)
