By Perry Bacon Jr.
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. -- Sen. Joe Biden called himself a "zadie" (grandfather) and emphasized the importance of "mishpuchah" (family) as he touted himself and his running mate, Sen. Barack Obama, as strong allies of Israel and the American Jewish community in a speech here.

Although polls show more than 60 percent of Jewish voters back Obama, the campaign has worried that viral e-mails falsely claiming Obama is a Muslim and some sermons by Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, could dampen enthusiasm for Obama.

So Biden, on the second day of his first swing of campaigning as Obama's running mate, was introduced by a child of Holocaust survivors. He emphasized his personal links to the late Tom Lantos, a Holocaust survivor who later became a U.S. congressman from California. Lantos, who died earlier this year, had served as a foreign policy aide to Biden before running for office himself.

Biden noted that his son's mother-in-law is Jewish and that the stepfather of one of his top foreign policy advisers, Anthony Blinken, was also a Holocaust survivor. Biden talked about his first trip abroad as a senator, where he met Golda Meir when she was prime minister of Israel. And he invoked several Yiddish terms to connect with an audience that included many elderly Jewish voters.

"I want to remind those of you who don't know me -- and those of you who do know me -- what my record has been. It has been unstinting in the defense and support of Israel," Biden told a crowd of several hundred at the retirement community Century Village.

Referring to the "scurrilous stuff going on in the Internet" about his running mate, Biden said, "I promise you, the stuff you're getting on the Internet is simply not true."

"Not enough people know about Barack," Biden said. "I promise you, Barack Obama, this man understands what is the driving energy in our community."

Biden said Iran's progress in developing nuclear weapons was a sign that "Israel today is less secure than it was eight years ago."

"I promise you, we will make it more secure," Biden said to loud applause.

People's opinions do too matter in fact they help other people understand things in certain ways so you LITTLE BOY need to shut up. Thank youu .

Because we all know... the future belongs to elderly Holocaust survivors, and not, I dunno, the 300 MILLION OTHER PEOPLE IN THE USA. Thanks for having your priorities straight Mr. Biden.

I feel very well indeed, knowing we will do our best to sacrifice our children and resources to protect an isolated racist nation.

What a bunch of nonsense! The article shows Biden (Mr. Hair Plug) pandering to the little old yentas of Western Israel and some uninformed folks jump in and beat up Palin??
What's that about? So she apparently did her duty as Governor of her state -- she was in the decision making mode -- and all that.
I think it's more important to discuss why me MUST be the singular nation to protect Israel. That little nation is so insignificant, they aren't our friends (they do actively spy on us you know), they may have a huge nuclear arsenal which can be fired off in an instant and create a BIG war, and through their hugely powerful lobby (AIPAC) have Congress do their bidding at the expense of most of the American citizenry.
Thnis is the issue that should be thoroughly debated -- not Palin.

Posted by: Hairlessbear | September 2, 2008 9:51 PM

What sort of mother is Ms. Palin that she would cut funding for other mothers who, unlike her daughter, have neither someone ready to marry them nor a well-off and supportive family? And what sort of party are the Republicans that they would nominate for vice-president (thus, potentially for president) someone whose only confrontational crisis experience seems to be pulling the trigger on a moose? But of course she would seem to share with her colleagues Mr. McCain and Mr. Bush a certain grade-school-level religious awareness and severe disregard for the Constitution. Well, like a Good Mother she would seem, it was said, diligent at Cleaning Up--except now there seems some possibility she may have been also involved in the dirt.

Neither of the two "major" parties care what is best for AmeriKa or americans. They only care for zionist israel.

Go Obama & Biden!!!

Posted by: Obamacan | September 2, 2008 8:49 PM

I'm happy to see Biden down in Fla.
So often, the GOP tries to confuse every issue, with their petty attacks.
I have an uncle, who was questioning whether Obama was a Muslim.
I bought him a computer, & showed him how to use the web. I pointed him to Snopes.com, so if he ever has any questions about rumors, he could find the truth, and let his friends know.
And believe me, my uncle & his friends understand about disinformation campaigns, having been born in Eastern Europe.
Too bad, the GOP is afraid to debate issues.
Lastly, why is the McCain Campaign denying requests, to interview Gov Palin?
If, as they say, she's such a great choice, why are they shielding her??

Sen. Leiberman was actually McCain's first choice to be his running mate, but the evangelicals running McCain and his campaign wouldn't allow him to have a Jew on the ticket. Lieberman is of course a good friend of McCain's, but why is Lieberman helping the Republican party that hates his religion? Being a Jew, Mormon, or mainstream Christian disqualifies them from being on the Republican ticket.

While you're listing all those community connections, don't forget that Obama's grandfather helped liberate Buchenwald.

Posted by: Joe | September 2, 2008 7:38 PM

Just out:
Sarah Palin slashed funding for two homes for unwed mothers with infants. These homes in Alaska provided housing for young, unwed mothers and their infants to age 18 months so they could learn parenting skills and receive training for marketable jobs.

The Jewish Community in America is smarter and more diverse than the Neocon Fear Mongerers and the Republican Fascist Coalition give them credit for. The fascists try to give the Jewish community fear and plant seeds of distrust of anything and anyone who is not Republican. Don't think that Jews in America don't see through this.

While ALEX H. exposes the diatribe above lets play on a level table and ask the questions below as well as those above for we need to know the answers to both and so many more

1: Did or did not Ms, Palin use her position to influence the outcome of her former brother in laws job termination?
A clear abuse of power if found to be true.

2: Did or did not Ms, Palin change her position on the infamous bridge to knowhere for political expediancy?
A clear estimation of her dishonesty if found to be true.

3: Did or did not Ms, Palin assist Mr. Ted Stevens in changing the bridge earmark from the bridge project defined to discretionary spending to then be assigned to that very same bridge project?
A clear use of semantics to cover a taxpayer fraud and cover up for personal gain.

The answers to these question will determine weather or not she is a servant of the people or another self anointed republican of the Bush school of enronomics, i.e. the Reagan Bush method of the fleecing of America and the post fraud exposure talk radio blame propaganda towards those who did the exposing.

Guilty of any one of these questions should be an automatic removal of the guilty party from any opportunity to further harm the American people.

As for the republican talking heads, they should be fined for their significant contributions to global warming via their constant outpouring of mindless hot air thereby depleting the oxygen content of the atmosphere and in so doing depriving intelligent creatures their God given right to breathe. This, of course, assumes they were created by the same God the evangelical Christians portend to believe in.

BTW, how do you justify a right to life supporter being a hunter and killer of other living species also supposedly created by that same God? Do we assume she believes her species to be superior and if so just who decided who was superior? Do we really need another republican playing God, I think not and the job is already taken!

Joe Biden. The "cheney" to compensate for sweetie hussein's gross inexperience; a plagiarizing expert who has stolen more words than Milton Berle (and he's just as funny). Totally lacking in ethics, in his third-rate, mediocre law school Biden was only able to graduate 76th in a class of 85 - i.e., he was in the lowest 10.5%! Of course, while campaigning, he claimed falsely to have graduated in the "top half" of his class. A plagiarizer and a LIAR! As a politics-as-usual, 30+-year Washington parasite, Plagiarist-Joe never worked harder than in his efforts to kill bi-partisan legislation simply because it would have adversely affected the enormous income of his lobbyist son. Plagiarist-Joe is the poster-boy for all that is rotten with Washington. This choice further illustrates the incredibly bad judgment of the Chicago Cretin.

Do John McCain or conservative republicans respect the moral foundations of this country? The U.S. Constitution was designed to protect the people of America from misguided government.

U.S. Constitution: Amendment I - Freedom of Religion
Right now, for the first time ever, your tax dollars are funding religious groups you may not agree with. To add insult to injury, conservative judges have ruled that taxpayers do not have a right to challenge this expenditure.

Amendment IV - Search and seizure
Under the guise of court action against abortion, Conservative republicans had John Ashcroft subpoena all the medical records of literally thousands of women just like you and members of your family. Conservative republicans are invading your privacy every day. Unfortunately for all of us, they don't appear to care about our U.S. constitution, or by extension, the people of our great country.

Amendment X - Powers of the States and People
John McCain and conservative republicans have tried consistently to overturn States Laws. They used your tax dollars to destroy the will of the people of Oregon, and the famous "Death with Dignity" law; they lost, but undoubtedly will try again. Conservative republicans and John McCain do not respect States Rights.

Amendment VIII - Cruel and Unusual punishment
Would you rather die, or support a government which supported and sanctioned torture? The founding fathers would rather have died, and in fact they were proud to fight and die for our government: A government which specifically outlaws cruel and unusual punishment for very important reasons.

John McCain and the conservative republicans have destroyed the moral foundations of our country. I urge you to keep this in mind in the coming election as we rebuild our nation together by voting Democrat.

I hate that sort of pandering -- as a Jewish person it makes me cringe -- but unfortunately certain (mostly older) audiences demand it (Jews are not alone in this), and on substance Biden and Obama are absolutely right. Bush's approach of combining inflammatory talk with policies that embolden our enemies has not helped either Israel or the U.S.

Biden is 100% right. Bush's disastrous foreign policy has led directly to Iran's increased nuclear ambitions. (The top Iranian leadership, including Khamenei, offered to put nuclear negotiations on the table immediately after the fall of Baghdad. BushCo ignored them.)
