Obama Response Ad: Palin is 'Lying' About her Record

By Howard Kurtz
The Ad: They call themselves mavericks. Whoa. Truth is, they're anything but. John McCain is hardly a maverick, when seven of his top campaign advisers are Washington lobbyists. He's no maverick when he votes with Bush 90 percent of the time. And Sarah Palin's no maverick either. She was for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it. Politicians lying about their records? You don't call that maverick. You call it more of the same.

Analysis: This mocking response ad from Barack Obama tries to tie the Republican ticket to old, conventional politics -- but also has the effect of bringing Obama down a notch, into a debate with McCain's running mate.

McCain's top campaign leadership is packed with former lobbyists, but that is not unusual in presidential races -- Obama's deputy campaign manager is a former lobbyist, and more than three dozen lobbyists have worked for his fundraising team -- while McCain took on big lobbies with his successful push for campaign-finance revision. More damaging is the ad's citation of McCain's overwhelming legislative support for President Bush, raising questions as to just how independent he is from the incumbent president he is vying to succeed.

The Illinois senator recycles a 2004 Bush attack ad against Democratic nominee John Kerry, who had said he was for $87 billion in war funding before he was against it. The ad accurately charges that Palin, who is touting her opposition to the infamous bridge project, originally supported it when she ran for Alaska governor.

Does that amount to politicians "lying" about their records? Palin's description of her role in the bridge funding is highly selective at best. An on-screen headline cites a critique of McCain's ad calling it a "naked lie," but that is from the liberal New Republic magazine. And while McCain may be exaggerating his maverick credentials, that is not evidence of lying.

The commercial's opening shot shows Obama with fellow senator and running mate Joe Biden and the words "For the Change We Need." That encapsulates the ad's underlying purpose: not to let McCain hijack the change theme that has been at the core of Obama's candidacy.

Kyu,

You reference one of my comments as proving I'm un-American..which one? My contributions to this country speak for themselves.

What have you actually done for your country? Stuck your neck out building companies, pursuing leading edge technologies other said wouldn’t work, educating people for their advancement not yours, done your best for those that care about you, creating a return for investors, raised your children to be leaders?

You "new" republicans and your smear campaigns; you claim a mantle of moral superiority than attack someone that does protect the USA. You think you’re a patriot? You don't know the meaning.

McCain may have been one in the past but the Maverick has been domesticated by time and corrupted in pursuit of fame and historical recognition. The original Maverick won’t have allowed these tactics to be used against other Americans or the PR we were fed to believe about McCain was false.

Either way McCain isn’t the Maverick anymore, Palin’s carrying him. And her myopic dogma doesn’t have America’s best interest at heart anymore than Islam’s fundamentalists have the Middle East’s.

JakeE:

Unless Palin takes the oath of office, I would not believe she was President of the United States. Next canard?

DC Mom:

The jet was listed, but did not sell, on eBay. She hasn't claimed otherwise.

McCain used to strike me as an honest guy--I would have voted for the John McCain of 2000--but now he's clearly decided that he's willing to lose his credibility and his honor in order to win the presidency.

Posted by: nitpicker | September 10, 2008 8:07 AM

Lee d'buddah, where you were last 19 months? How many times obama lied to Americans? McCain is a honest, sincere, respectful and reliable person, Obama is a different level of candidate, and he is not qualified as Presidential candidate.
R.V. Wade, just wait and see...Obama will be shocked when it all comes down to that voting booth. Your judgement is ???
X-Republican, you are not true American, you proved it by your comment.

Selection of Sarah Palin - the character - is a national disaster for the US which is going to haunt them if they elect her and her oldy mentor John McCain!

Posted by: Anju Chandel | September 10, 2008 1:34 AM

America for sure needs "change that they can believe in" and that can be delivered only by Barack Obama - its original originator, and not by John McCain - the oldy copycat!

Posted by: Anju Chandel | September 10, 2008 1:26 AM

Please disregard JakeD.
Gen. Patton once spoke of his type:
"They know a much about real war as they do f***ing."
Sarah Palin could say she was President of the US once, and JakeD would believe it.

Kurtzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz,

You are such a weasel with words.

Palin smeared you with lipstick?

Does anyone know Gov. Palin's views on diversity or minority issues (other than women's issues). I haven't seen any people of color speaking on her behalf. No speech writers, personal friends, support staff, neighbors, former classmates...nothing! She doesn't seem to surround herself with, or know any people of color. There have been no Asians, Hispanics, Latin Americans, African-Americans, Indians, or any other type of Americans, races, ethnicities, or minorities that have defended/celebrated her, or spoken on her behalf.

It would be refreshing to hear her views on the ISSUES, specifically those that matter to the vast majority of All-Americans not just the one's who look like her.

OBAMA- IF YOU'RE REALLY THE 'AGENT OF CHANGE' PROVE IT. DEMAND THE RESIGNATION OF YOUR FELLOW DEMOCRAT CHARLIE RANGEL. YOU GO ON AND ON (BLAH BLAH BLAH) ABOUT THE WEALTHY PAYING MORE TAXES, AND ONE OF YOUR OWN PARTY GOT AWAY WITH CHEATING ON HIS TAXES FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS!!!! HOW'S THAT FOR 'BIPARTISAN POLITICS'. PROVE THAT YOU CAN GO AGAINST YOUR OWN PARTY TO BRING ABOUT YOUR 'CHANGE'!

I repeat a comment I made early this morning:

1. I'm a white 49 years old male.
2.I was raised Republican and still believe in the principles of my father’s America: fiscal responsibility, environmental protection, strong defense, individual freedoms, respect for all people, telling the truth and taking responsibility for my actions.
3. I'm a patriot and have been called back to the Pentagon to assist with technologies for our troops and homeland security.
4. I've been a business owner for over 21 years with 40 engineers and scientist innovating products to help our Country’s competitiveness and defense.
5. I am the father of three sons and coach youth athletics.
6. I am a gun owner and bird hunter.

I am ashamed of what we have allowed to happen to our Country. We’ve elevate people into leadership positions on claims of moral superiority even though they’ll say any lie, break any law or smear any competitor for their advantage. The very fabric of America is coming apart because any action is justified to win. I grew up believing the strength of America was it principles and our advantage over the rest of the World, now we are no better than our enemies.

If anyone believes that one religion is superior to another, they’re not true Americans.

If anyone votes based on skin color, they’re not true Americans.

If anyone believes they shouldn’t have to invest in the future, they’re not true Americans.

If anyone tells lies to discredit their opponent, they’re not true Americans.

If anyone believes that the USA doesn’t need to follow laws we require of other nations, they’re not true Americans.

If anyone elect to office believes they are above the law, they’re not true Americans.

If anyone believes that torturing captives is acceptable, they’re not true Americans.

If anyone supports the secession of Alaska from the USA, they’re not true Americans.

Many of the people that currently support the Republican ticket do so to support a couple of narrowly focused issues while their leaders are fleecing American’s future and destroying the planet for future generations.

Obama overcame enormous obstacles through a combination of hard work, intelligence and courage. His story is a true American success story.

For anyone to claim he is not an American ….is truly un-American.

The intolerance for other viewpoints is actually tearing apart America, it will be interesting to see how many will attack me for not falling in line with their beliefs. True American patriots understand why we’re falling apart…and it’s not caused by what are called liberals but any action justified by intolerance and greed.

Barack needs to watch how much time he spends beating the bush about the 'bridge to nowhere'. or maybe he needs to educate his campign people about HIS OWN VOTING RECORD REGARDING THE BRIDGE!!! He and his 'good 'ol buddy Biden voted FOR the bridge. THEN VOTED AGAINST A SECOND BILL WHICH WOULD HAVE SHIFTED THE FUNDS TO THE KATRINA VICTIMS!!!!! Obama for the people?! I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!!

What does it take for Howard Kurtz to accuse a candidate of lying? First, Palin and McCain have both made claims that numerous independent news media sources have debunked as false. Then, the GOP candidates continue to state them, knowing they are false and that others know they are false.

I can only conclude that they believe more people will see their false claims in the media and believe them than those who see the stories exposing them.

Howard Kurtz sheds no light on this. He tries so hard to be balanced, he loses sight of the degree of misinformation coming from one side (McCain). In his mind, apparently, if McCain tells a million lies and Obama can be questioned on any data point, then "everybody does it" and they are even on the score of factual accuracy.

Congress shuld give at least as much financial support to Feminists For Life as they give to Planned Parenthood.

Feminists For Life determined there is INADEQUATE SUPPORT for pregnant students so they DO NOT HAVE A CHOICE!

Why don't PRO CHOICE ADVOCATES SUPPORT REAL CHOICE by advocating support and facilities for pregnant students?

There are 2 kinds of people

1. On whose life other people write books. Example Sarah Palin

2. Who are so self-possessed that they write books on themselves. Example: Barack Obama

Posted by: JK | September 9, 2008 5:29 PM

You decide who is more unsuitable

1. Person contesting for "Vice President" with 8-10 years of administrative experience

2. Person contesting for "President" with 3 years as "Junior" senator out which 19 months have been spent in campaingning of election and rest writing books on himself.

Posted by: Mac | September 9, 2008 5:27 PM

Well, one thing is sure. Obama has no record he can even lie about.

Posted by: Jeremy | September 9, 2008 5:21 PM

But we don't identify anything with Obama either. He has double face. What he shows he isn't.

Posted by: MJ | September 9, 2008 5:20 PM

OBAMA IS THE LIAR!!!

GOVERNOR PALIN NEVER SUPPORTED THE BRIDGE TO NOWHERE.
SENATOR STEVENS ACKNOWLEDGED SHE NEVER SUPPORTED THE BRIDGE TO NO WHERE.
HE ALSO SAID SHE ALWAYS HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT.

BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA MAKES THINGS UP WHEN ATTACKS GOVERNOR PALIN, JUST TO COVER UP HIS TISSUE PAPER THIN RECORD; WHILE GOVERNOR PALIN HAS A LENGTHY RECORD OF ACCOMPLISHMENT.

MAYOR PALIN GOT THE SPORTS COMPLEX BUILT IN HER HOMETOWN OF WASILLA, TO HELP KEEP KIDS AWAY FROM DRUGS.

SARAH PALIN FOUGHT CORRUPTION!!!
BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA TURNED A BLIND EYE TO CORRUPTION, IF NOT EMBRACING IT IN A VERY BIG WAY. IN HIS HOMETOWN OF CHICAGO WHILE PRETENDING TO ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING, EVERYTHING HE DID WAS TO ENHANCE HIS PERSONAL POSITION WITHOUT CONSIDERATION FOR THE REAL NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE. OH PERHAPS HE HELPED SOMEONE GET FOOD STAMPS BUT WHAT NEIGHBOR WOULDN'T HELP SOMEONE LIKE THAT IN NEED. HIS ENTIRE FOCUS WAS ON HIS PERSONAL AGGRANDISEMENT

SARAH PALIN ACTUALLY TOOK ACTION TO REDIRECT KIDS ENERGIES INTO POSITIVE ACTIVITIES BY GETTING THE SPORTS COMPLEX BUILT!
SHE ELIMINATED THE NEED FOR AFTER-THE-FACT EXPENDITURES LIKE D.A.R.E AND OTHER REMEDIAL PROGRAMS.

So,Egobama is whining that Palin is "lying about her record".Well,at least she does have a record, which is more than we can say for the whiny puppet. No Obama,no way,no how.McCain/Palin'08....Hillary2012!!!!

McCain has nothing. He had no message of his own that was working for him so he had to steal Obama's. Obama started with that message of change 20 months ago and is still with it. Obama can write his own speeches he does not need a speech writer which I admire because what you hear from him or his own words, not someone elses. How can another speak for someone else. If you truly believe in what you will do as President then you don't have to read your notes. It should be in your heart. McCain is a fake and he should be tested for Alzheirmer. He has no hope for our future. Its all gloom and doom and he looks down on hope. If it would not be for S. Palin he could have never gotten a crowd to come out to hear him speak. People come out down because they are curious. They don't like McCain anymore then before. That is why he came down on Obama for being able to draw hugh crowds, he made him out to be a celebrity, Now what does he have to say.

Look all you people you are so wild about Shara you have to ask yourself what it is you like about her and in what way do you identify with her. Okay she is a hockey mom, she claims to be a pit bull with lipstick which we all know what they call a female dog and that she is. She is a mother a mayor that left her small town and left it in 20 million dollars of debt. She was a govenor of a state that has more moose than people.. She lied about the jet, the bridge to nowhere, her cook, and who knows what else. She is an extremeist when it comes to her religion and believes this war is a task from God, while our young men and women are dying. And ask yourself for what? Iraq had nothing to do with 911 that was a lie that Bush and his administration told us. See where lies get you. She is against homosexual and belives that prays can convert them. She wants to convert the Jews to Christanity, because she beleives that salvation only comes through Jesus Christ and her church sends missionaries to Isarle on a program called Jews to Christ. Laidies, she does believe in abortions unless it is to save the mother's life. So if you are a rape victim or a victim of incest you will have to carry that baby to term. If your daughter at the age of 12 became preganat you will have no choice but to let her carry that child to term. If you discover that your child will be born with a servere birth defect and you know that it will be more than you can handel you will have no choice. Shara had a choice of what she wanted to do, the choice was up to her not the government. Are you ready for that? Is every woman financially able to care of a child with special needs. Do you have the health care that will cover all its medical treatments. Think about it ladies. What do you really know about this woman who suddenly came on the scene. Obama has been out there for 20 months and more and everyone has dug into his past. We all know Joe Biden and we all know McCain, but do we really. He changed from the man he was in 2000 to the strange man that he is now. But who is Shara and what do you really know about her. From what I do know is that she is a liar and the last thing we need in the White House is another liar. With the economy being what it is if you think that McCain/Palin is going to help you ask yourself this question. Are you better off now than you were 4 years ago. You will have an extension of all Bush's policies if McCain is elected. We will be on our way to being a third world country. Also Palin does not believe that global warming is man made, she believes that it is God's will. So what do you think she will do about that situation and on energy. Yes Drill baby Drill regardless of what it does. We are addicted to oil and we need to reinvest in other sources and stop depending on oil all together. McCain has no vison for the future and he is still fighting the Viet Nam war. He can not say what a win in Iraq looks like or when if ever we will win. And if you haven't caught it in what he says when talking about nations he sees as evil and ready to use military force to defeat it. He will start the draft again so you need to think about that. Where else will the man power come from. He said that when confronted with evil you must defeat it. You can't defeat evil. You can not have the good without the bad. You have to confront it and face it but evil will always be there in some form or another. That is life. When I think about S. Palin I realize that all that glitters is not gold. With her not wanting to answer serious questions from serious news reporters I ask myself what does she have to hide. Why not answer the tough questions. Why not tell us what her politics are and just what she believes in. Right now the Repbulicans are programming her and she will come out wrapped up in a pretty package but only as a puppet with someone else pulling her strings. McCain did not want to pick Shara as his VP she was picked for him, he didn't even know her. He did not write his own platform that he will run on the right wing party wrote it for him. He isn't even running his own campaign Roves people took it over. So where is McCain in all this? And if he can't make decisions for himself now who will be making the decsisons for him as President? Remember Bush/Cheneny. It is more of the same. Is that what you want? If I was McCain I would not let Shara walk behind me when I am coming down steps from the plane. Before you give your vote to McCain because you like Shara you better be clear on just who she is and what she really wants. We all know she is not qualifed to be a breath away from being President.

So Obama is lying about Palin, saying she is lying. Oh the tangled web we weave..

Obama is still in full pout mode, mama gave him the smackdown. Now Obama is whimpering in the corner, screaming vile lies because he can't stand up to a real woman.

How typical of the sexist liberal mindset.

Hey Patty2008 who says "The latest reports out today clearly show
that the dimwit Marxist Socialist Democratic Party is in its "Last Throes"
after Nutcase Madame Speaker Nancy Pelosi
and DNC Chairperson Howard Dean to nominate
Pelosi Prodigy fake Messiah Barack Obama as
the 2008 Democrat Presidential Nominee and
then named old big mouth draft dodger gaffer Joe Biden for Vice President. And so
then there is crazy Michelle Obama trying to run for First Lady, which is not even an
Elective Office!"
*********************************
THESE ARE YOUR PEOPLE, McCain! Calling names without speaking about issues. It's all the Republicans have now.
Tell me, Patty - do YOU make more than 250K a year? With such great language skills, I somehow doubt it. WHY exactly is it that you think McCain would benefit your life in ANY way? Have the Bush years been that good for you?
It's time we have a President who can think on his feet and actually CARES about you, even though you don't seem to like him or his wife very much.(RUNNING for 1st lady? I didn't realize we could do that.)
Sure, we can all have a beer with the Bush's. We can hang out with Sarah and talk about how God wants Iraqi's to die or how she takes HUGE earmarks for Alaska, or how she tried to sue the U.S. government to take polar bears off the endangered speices list. Or HEY, if you bring her the right back leg of a timber wolf, she'll give you $150.00!!! Drill drill drill, baby. Don't listen to global experts! Because, just like Bush, your own knowledge on the subject is all that counts and you won't listen to experts if they disagree with you.
The economy? Foreign affairs and our place in the global community? Global warming, be it man made or not, is a threat to the world - not just Democrats. If these issues are not important to you, DON'T VOTE. PLEASE!!

Hey DC MOM

You are telling a big one and God is watching.

It was on EBAY for some time and it was taken off and sold by a friend of Sarah's and he made $ 21,000 for selling. I will say a little prayer for you tonight.

Hi JakeD:

If you're not sure, the jet was actually sold on E-Bay. I just want to let you know the fact. Palin said it, and did it.

Posted by: DC Mom | September 9, 2008 1:57 PM

Howie, why can you not bring yourself to say that this ad is accurate? Palin again today lied on the stump about her reform credentials and video evidence of her previous speeches categorically contradicts her.

You ask a question - "Does that amount to politicians "lying" about their records?" and you entirely fail to answer it, presumably because you're afraid of appearing biased. All you do is question whether the TNR quotation may be inaccurate due to its source.

You're supposed to be the expert, tell us, what do *YOU* think is the truth?! Don't subject us to any more of this airy-fairy, hand-wavy faux-analysis.

Posted by: Martin | September 9, 2008 1:29 PM

Oh, so you can't point to any specific post, but the "tone" is off?! How's this for "tone": You have some GALL to claim that on a thread discussing an Obama campaign ad which accuses Palin of "lying" about her record when it's obvious she did not.

Posted by: JakeD | September 9, 2008 1:25 PM

My mantra is look at the candidates' stance on issues and their history. Forget wasting time calling each other names. I'm middle aged white women in a blue town in a red state. I'm liberal on some issues and completely conservative on others.

McCain doesn't have the temperment, intelligence and the patience to be President. In his mind, he's still a top-gun flyboy out to make quick work of America's problems. America needs a strong diplomat with some a vision toward the future. There are no quick fixes to our problems and his anti-earmark rhetoric is just that. Not all earmarks are bad news. They fund infrastructure project, school programs and important community initiatives. Would you like if it YOUR bridge collapsed killing people because there wasn't money to repair it?

Stop and look at what each candiate represents. Forget the hype, commercials and the pundits. Look at the issues and facts. Making a gut check vote is just as bad as making gut check decisions as president.

Attention Democrites!!

Why don't I read any more of your angry and insulting remarks about Senator Clinton? What happened? Has she been converted?

I think I know why. Looks like you have awaken to your senses and now realize that your man Obama-be(rhymes with wanna-be) cannot win this with Senator Clinton. Exhibit 1: Without the cooperation of Senator Clinton and President Clinton, you democrites would not have been unified. Senator Clinton went out of her way to help bring that about.

Exhibit 2: Your man Obama-be is now relying on Senator Clinton to campaign hard for him in some, if not all, of the battleground states. Additionally, your man Obama-be, after ignoring President Clinton, is now ready to have a LENGTHY private meeting with President Clinton on Thursday, 9/11/2008. Polls sometimes have miraculous effect on people, specially AMBITIOUS people!!

You reap what you sow!!

But here's what it comes down to:

Voters are now enlightened with some hard truth and real facts:
1. Obama-be makes excellent speeches, is likable but is not ready. And the more you try to talk down Gov. Palin, the more you emphasize Obama-be's lack of experience (no-brainer).

2. Obama-be has made nothing but empty rhetoric about CHANGE. He courted and is supported by the "old democrite establishment", has been playing "old politics as usual" and is promoting "old democrite policies from way back when". You can only be dumb and stupid to continue to buy into the notion that he is a real CHANGE AGENT!!

Good luck.

Huh? What the heck does this have to do with Michelle Obama's hospital job? Broken link on the Politics page, I guess.

Anyway, while I'm here, let me just note that John McCain is the is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being America has ever known.

Posted by: The Manchurian Electorate | September 9, 2008 12:36 PM

JakeD,

You're missing my point, if you read down through all the article below there is a obvious nasty tone to those supporting McCain and Palin versus the majority comments of comments posted by Obama/Biden supporters. X-Republican is right if we don't focus on what is important our country is lost and all of those people claiming to be patriots but speak with hate are more like Nazis than USA citizens. X Republican is right...this country was I have to admit probably founded more by the liberals of their day than conservatives, remember conservatives supported the English. Damn I'm becoming more liberal the older I get, I guess I'm not as afraid anymore.

Posted by: 5th-X republican | September 9, 2008 12:29 PM

Attention Democrites!

You get what you deserve. Have you forgotten how Senator Clinton was treated by your man Obama-be(rhymes with wanna-be)? What a loser you all are. Now Obama-be is stooping down to the VP level, which should have been his level to begin with. But Obama-be is too ambitious, and not only will he pay the price for it, unfortunately, he brings along with him Senator Clinton, if not the entire Democrite party.

Just think about this:
Had Obama-be been patient enough, and rightfully allowed Senator Clinton to be on the top of the ticket and he humbly took the VP slot, Obama-be would have been 100% ready in 8 years. And he would only be 55 years old then - prime time for him! Then, nobody could ever question his readiness! But i guess he miscalculated because of Obama-be's AMBITION, AMBITION, AMBITION!!!

Thanks.

In recent weeks, John McCain and the Republican party have blatantly and without any shame adopted the Democratic campaign theme of “change”. It should be evident to an objective observer that Bush 43 and now McCain and Pailin are mere puppets to the true Republican national party leaders who control their strings. Cheney is one of the few of that inner cabal that have been calling the shots since the Nixon administration. They are in fact a continuation of the Nixon and Ford presidencies with only a disruption during the Carter and Clinton years. Bush 41( Head of the RNC during Nixon, former head of the CIA,VP to Reagan, and president is probably the real leader of this political Cosa Nostra if not a equal partner of this power sharing musical chairs game. His right and left hands have been Dick Cheney(former Sec.of Defense of Bush 41, former White House Chief of staff for Ford) and the other is Donald Rumsfeld(former Sec. of Defense for Ford and Bush 43,former special envoy to the Middle East during Reagan). Another member of this group, more likely a captain if not a full blown boss himself is James Baker (former C.O.S of Reagan, former Under Sec. of Commerce for Ford, former C.O.S and Sec of State for Bush 41, former Sec. of Treasury for Reagan, former chief legal advisor to Bush 43). Another captain or free lance enforcer is Karl Rove a college drop out and campaign manager for both Bush 41 and 43, also for Phil Gram who is McCain’s economic advisor.
Lets look at McCain’s staff of change.
On July 2, 2008, Steve Schmidt was given "full operational control" of McCain's campaign. Steve Schmidt prior to this was a top aide to Dick Cheney and a protégé to Karl Rove. Another advisor is Charles R. Black worked for Ronald Reagan's two Presidential campaigns in 1976 and 1980 and he was a senior political adviser to the 1992 re-election campaign of George H.W. Bush. Another advisor is Randy Scheunemann. He was project director for the Project for the New American Century. A neo-conservative think tank founded by non other than Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Bill Kristol and others in 1996. Other signatories to this group reads like a who’s who of the last 8 years of the republican administration. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_for_the_New_American_Century.
These people have never cared about small town america or “values” All they care about is war profiteering. Many of the signatories have never served in the military. Cheney and Rove both dodged the draft. Look at the statement of principles by the PNAC. Rumsfeld was a good friend of Saddam Huessin in the 80’s Cheney didn’t want Nelson Mandela free. These are the real puppet masters, they throw out the talking points about the left of being elitist and not caring about middle america and these same guys other than Rove have advanced degrees and are worth no less than 10 million dollars. People who support them need to extricate their heads out of Limbaugh and Hannity’s asses and see what is really happening to them. McCain is not his own man he confuses stories of his real life with a book he read “The Gulag Archipelago", in which a fellow prisoner - not a guard - silently drew a cross in the dirt with a stick.” An ironic twist to all this is Eliot A. Cohen, a signatory to the PNAC "Statement of Principles", responded in The Washington Post: "There is no evidence that generals as a class make wiser national security policymakers than civilians. Other than the ultra affluent, how can anyone support the Republican party? When will small town America realize that they are being duped into supporting the ultra-affluent agenda. The talking points of the right are so hypocritical that it becomes laughable. The red meat of the right is the so called Main stream Media as if Limbaugh, Hannity, et al. are not part of it. They demean celebrity status, however they tout one of their greatest presidents(Reagan) was an actor. They say they are the party of patriotism, yet many of the upper echelon of the party have never served, i.e. Cheney, Rumsfeld, Baker, Reagan. They say that they care about "Main Street" USA but only bail out the Whales of Wall Street. Yet small town America eat this tripe every year. They don't care about relgion unless it can be used to stir up the base, nor science or technology unless there is a buck to be made. Small town America takes pride on its freedom but yet don't realize that over time we are becoming less free, ie wire tapping and other forms of domestic survelliance. They demean people of intelligence because they know many people of small town America don't have degrees and use it at a fake issue and call people who spent time in academia as elitist when many on the right serve on university boards and have part-time professorships. They say they are against affirmitive action but yet celebrate mediocrity, Bush43 and McCain graduating at the bottom of their classes. Who both came from already well established families and had all the opportunities and connections to excel. Why does small town America believes this is the party for them? Christian conservatives seem to the be the first ones who want to go to war and bomb someone before any diplomacy is tried. Why can't small town America and Christian conservatives realize they are being used as pawns just as much the Islamic fundamentalist are. Islamic fundamentalist come from small town Middle East and given the same kind of talking points as the evangalicals. They want prayer in school, no choice available to women, and believe to the core that their ideas about worship and country are the best. Wake up small town America you are being duped.

Talking about who is more patriotic, symbols, and wearing pins are nothing more than distractions to the real issue of how a few select group of people have held power almost continously for over 30 years. Yes the left has thier own political power groups but none have been so effective at pushing forward an agenda that is fundamentally bad for the U.S. and in a larger view the entire world. I stress again the now defunct PNAC and the AIPAC have been slowly pushing us closer to another World War. Bush41 and et al have been doing this and no one calls them on it. Every Republican admistration has basically the same people recycled since Nixon. Just do a little research and you will see that these people are just pushing this agenda of some kind of Pax Americana and not taking into account that maybe other nations of the world might not like that and if not bomb them.
Many people who support the Republican party, really need to read "1984" by George Orwell and see how we as nation have been inching closer to that type of society. People think this story is about a communist society, but it is more about how a society is kept in a constant state of fear in order for the ruling class to stay in control. Doublespeak, patriotism to the point of frenzy, censhorship, erosion of civil liberties (not respecting the constitution) is happening right in front of us. The cosilidation of government (the executive branch has never been more powerful than ever). No real independent journalism. Cameras on street corners. This may sound like delusional conspiracy stuff, but I implore people to research for themselves to really see what is happening to them. People think this could never happen here in the U.S. but all this has already happening, slowly, icrementally all under the guise of "keeping America safe"

I posted thes comments on other political blogs and I send them to you to use them or do with them as you please. I truly hope that Senator Obama will be able to stem this tide of facism and break this cycle of fear that has beem slowly eroding the American dream.

Howard, you always manage to get a cheap shot in about Obama - do you win some prize? A lot of us do not see Obama's ad as bringing him down a notch. It sets the right tone for a ridiculous, veracity free McCain ad that really takes the American people for fools.

X-Republican, thanks for your great post. I read that even Ed Koch (!) is supporting Obama. Thank you for throwing down the gauntlet - we have our fill of bigots and trolls posting here. Why is it when Obama changes his mind/opinion on an issue the liberally bias media calls it a flip-flop but when the republicans flip-flop they call it a lie?

Are these Obama Flip-Flops or Lies:

Rev Wright - I can no more disown him than I can the black community. Then a month later he disowned both Rev Wright and his church.

Illegal immigration - First he opposed cracking down on businesses that hire illegal immigrants, now he supports it.

Marijuana - First he supported the decriminalization of marijuana now he opposes it.

Cuba Embargo - First he said "to end the embargo with Cuba" now he wants to continue it.

Public Financing - Obama became the first candidate to reject public financing for the general election after earlier promises to accept it.

Education – First his highest priority was the arts, music and culture now it's traditional math and science.

Gun Control - now favors an individual's right to own a gun.

I've read all of the responses and this one rings like a liberty bell-
2nd X

From X-Republican:

It's over for McCain. He gambled and lost.

Palin is trying to do a crash course on national issues, and already has made her first gaffe. Palin has got 4 kids between 5-months old to 17 years old (and let's be real here, no real help from Todd Palin).

She will have a very tough time trying to get up to speed on issues such as the economy, health care, Iraq/Afghainstan/Pakistan, Russia-Georgia conflict, Israel-Palenstian conflict, climate change and the countless other issues. Her one strong point will be "drilling for oil".

Palin has already made a big gaffe about Fannie Mae and Freddic Mac. I foresee more coming.

The Obama campaign is in melt-down, right before our very eyes!

First, the Dem Presidential nominee is STILL running against the GOP VP nominee.
L.M.F.A.O.!
AND...
After just promising us that he wasn't going to mention her name again.

In addition, at least Gov. Palin flipped the Reformer's way.

When Barack Obama opted out of McCain-Feingold Campaign Reform, he flipped AGAINST reform -- for political advantage, no less.

That's why Gov. Palin gets to call herself a Reformer, and Barack Obama doesn't.

p.s.
Can any Democrats explain why BHO "flipped" OFF 18 million voters?

Why can't we all get along??? During election times it always seem it's the American Way for "us versus them". We are ALL in the same boat and it's sinking. For those that are on McCain/Palin side, did you also vote for Bush/Cheney? Are you, your friends, your family better off NOW and have been for the last 7 years??? As a Republican I can't say we're better off even though it's tough to admit.

Palin changes her mind about the bridge:

"Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport, but the $398 million bridge is not the answer," she said. "Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it's clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island. Much of the public's attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here. But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened."

So she wants Congress to pay for it right? Aparently not:

On Monday in Missouri, Gov. Palin put it this way: "I told Congress thanks but no thanks for that bridge to nowhere. If the state wanted to build a bridge we would built it ourselves."

Where is the line between flip-flopping and just straight out lying?

With some of the comments on this board i can see why other countries own us financially we get caught up in ridiculous debates and none of it has to do with politics. What are the politics of the people running. We treat politics in this country like a sporting event or reality tv show. We want people to spoon feed us information, and whats even more disturbing we can come on a blog like this one and not have a open intelligent debate about ISSUES. But that dose not matter we want to know about pastors, sex lives and what they crapped out in the toilet this morning. I dont want to sit down a drink a beer and watch a game with my politicans i want to know that im paying into a social security system that will be there when i need it. I want to have affordable health care i dont need Free I need Affordable. We call ourselves Americans but what have we done as a society to deserve the honor, what do we fight for anymore?

Posted by: tired | September 9, 2008 8:36 AM

Talk about change you McCain't believe in.

Since the nomination of McCain and his governess, we have seen who controls the republican party. Who've we got: Mathew Scully (Palin's ventriloquist speech-writer, a Bush-man), attack-dog Karl Rover (Republican propaganda chief for more than eight years, a Bushman), Herr Schmidt chief strategist (another neo and a Bushman).

Haven't Americans seen enough of the lies and murders of the last eight years? Need I say, Sept. 11th, Anthrax, Iraq-attack, and now Sack-of-Cash-Willy in Georgia? What about the give-aways and government hand-outs to a)banks, b)military-suppliers, c)Blackwater and co. murder Inc. d)Boeing and the airline companies e)oil speculators. And now as a going away present, one more huge hand out to the re insurance industry with a subsidized buy-back of 500 billion (see WSJournal)of faulty credit.

Enough from the party of bancruptcy. It will take at least four years to begin to straighten out the mess the Republican big debt party has left behind.

McCain put his Presidential ambition before the country. NOT COUNTRY FIRST! He is playing a game with our country in this dangerous time, when the stakes have never been higher. Palin is a Rove/Black distraction to the real issues facing us, to maintain Republican failed leadership. McCain looks pathetic trailing along behind Palin at his ralleys, like a pet puppy. She knows who is exciting these people and it is not McCain. Two Mavericks? that are following the lead of the original two Mavericks, Bush/Cheney, who went against the majority of Americans, starting this illegal invasion of Iraq with lies, wire tapping etc. McCain and Palin are both using each other for their own political ambitious egos. Take a good honest look! McCain had to read her name when announcing his own running mate...Absurd! A vote for Palin/McCain is a vote for the same incompetence of the past 8 years.

I too am ashamed of what we have allowed to happen to our Country, and completely agree with ‘X-Republican’ above that the very fabric of America is coming apart.
I completely agree with the ‘beliefs’ which were stated in ‘X-Republicans’ earlier post, which state the following:
“If anyone believes that one religion is superior to another, they’re not true Americans.”
“If anyone votes based on skin color, they’re not true Americans.”
“If anyone believes they shouldn’t have to invest in the future, they’re not true Americans.”

“If anyone supports the secession of Alaska from the USA, they’re not true Americans.”

"So what is Obama going to do besides "change"? And if change is the sole thing you're after, go ahead and move to a different country! Lord knows there are millions upon millions of people in other countries that would give their left nut to take your place in American society..."

Well, you could go to his website and learn with on your own time...but I will educate you here anyway.

Obama will change the "tickle down" economy that gives tax breaks to the rich and HOPES that they buy products and spur the economy. If this idea works, then the American economy must be doing great right now with plenty of jobs and a very low rate of foreclosures....

Obama will change the Enron loophole that allows corporations to take very risky business practices, keep all the profits, and pass on the losses to the American tax payers when the risky practices go sour. Look into Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Obama will change the tax breaks for corporations that send all of their labor overseas, and grant more tax breaks to starting companies and companies that produce American jobs.

Obama will change the healthcare system by making it posible for every citizen to have affordable healthcare that is on par with the healthcare that the politicians give themselves.

Obama will change the plans of our army from wasting 10 billion dollars a month in a country that should be protecting itself to focus on a country that is harboring direct threats to America.

Obama will change these policies that Goerge W. Bush has implemented while McCain will keep all of the same policies and still promise change.

Obama will change politics by talking about policies and truth rather then smearing his opponent and putting spin on facts or "straight talking" lies.

This is just some of what Obama wants to change. You would know it if you have bothered to watch and speeches or pay any attention to politics.

If you haven't heard any of this change before it is probably because you do not really follow politics. Everything you know is probably from the five or six, 30 second, comercials that you are forced to watch between sports breaks. Your duty as a citizen is to get online, learn about the candidates from each respective website, and vote with ALL OF THE FACTS.

Do not fall in line with the smears and lies that you heard was true from a friend of a neighbor. GET EDUCATED BEFORE YOU VOTE.

It's really too bad that McCain chose to make the election about personalities and character instead of issues. He figured that's the only chance he had to win - by using the old Rovian tactics. I guess he'd rather throw his principles out the window than lose an election.

When the Republicans lower the level of a campaign I'm afraid the only workable response is to attack back. We've seen before that if only the Democrats stay on the high road - they lose. I guess there are just too many voters that reward gutter politics with victory. So, Obama, you have our support to give as well as you get.

The political discussion in this country has lost its intelligence, and this is the reason why no matter who is elected the United States is going to hell in a hand basket. In order to have a DEMOCRACY you have to have an informed electorate, 99% of the comments posted on this site is party-line rhetoric recycled from some party blog. Little to no content on where we should go from here except which of the lesser of two evils should be elected.
As our country falls into despair we have no one to blame except ourselves for not demanding real change, not the kind that comes from the empty promises directed at the BASE of a political party.

Not according to some. Her oldest son, Track Palin, before finishing high school, was shipped out-of state to another school, and returned about a year later, to graduate in Alaska, then enlisted into the Army.
.
The report is that he got arrested, along with other of his friends, for vandalism to school buses, and that he is going to the army to avoid jail and scandal.

Republicans would support a broom stick if McCain nominated it as VP. But the independents should be able to see Palin for what she is - a beauty queen.

It "brings Obama down a notch?" OMG you MSM pukes have such a double standard. The straight talking $100 Million man, who promised a respectful campaign reaching across aisles, and his campaign surrogates have been accusing Obama of being a traitor, of being uppity and maligning his wife and kids ever since Steve Schmidt, he of the "McCain has an illegitimate black baby" fame took over the straight talk express. Obama issues a mild factual ad and you're talking as if he's gutter slimed the McCain's dog. Stop the double standard -- start reporting the truth.

Palin's scandals have touched on the various parallels that Bush's have, including the abuse of power (Bush: Unitary Executive, US Attorney firings etc.; Palin: Troopergate, Loyalty firings), record of fiscal incompetence, the flair for the casual lie, the crazy Christianist angle, the disregard for facts and expertise, etc. But however terrible Bush was, there's no allegation that he's out there lining his own pockets. So here's a scary thought: is Palin a poor man's Dubya? Not only an incompetent, fact-avoiding extremist, but personally corrupt as well?

We still need:Our troops brought back home, a plan for Healthcare, Our budget balanced, a plan forincrease in jobs with equal pay, our services enhanced for our Veterans from all FWs,increase in SS us elders, etc...The socalled Mavericks speak of giving back to the wealthy, same old Bush rhetoric, but why dont they get it that it us poorer folks who have kept the wealth with the Wealthy. That's why we are poorer and the MC is getting just as poor as in less income to shuffle among the daily increasing cost of living. It appears that Sarah has found a way to get rid of the wrinkles while we still shuffle and scuffle. It is time for CHANGE. When it was time for Obama to choose a running mate, he chose Biden, a person who could take over in a responsible and experienced way, in a heartbeat.

When McCain chose a running mate, he was playing politics and chose someone inexperienced, but would help him get elected.

We've had enough of people playing politics with our government. Yeah, Ron Paul would have been better, but short of that, Obama-Biden is the best choice.

Anyone who votes Republican this year is more delusional than the candidates they support.
George C. Marshall, our greatest soldier statesman after George Washington, opposed shipping arms to Britain in 1940. His boss, Franklin D. Roosevelt, with nary a day in uniform, thought otherwise. Whose judgment looks better?"[
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/uselection2008/johnmccain/2581086/John-McCain-accused-of-plagiarising-Wikipedia-for-speeches.html. Even if you don’t like Obama there is no-way a sane person can want this continued blatant fleecing of our Nation.

Thes are all verifiable facts and can be found just with a google search.

Wake up small town America you are being played.

Never before have I added any thoughts to any politically-oriented forum or "blogs, and probably never again will I. Why?

Because I find the quality of what so many "contributors" have written commonly is so sleazy, so vile and so sophomoric that calm and sensible person normally would not want to be part of all this.

Examples? Well, to refer to Obama as an arrogant fraud or "empty suit" is unjustified. And to refer to Palin as a "b***h" requires a corrupted and vicious mind.

Please, people ... get a grip!

I like the ad. McBush HAS been calling himself a "maverick" and McBUSH HAS voted with Bush 90% of the time. His campaign team IS packed with former lobbyists and that's not change either, like the author points out (but witlessly attempts to use the sameness as an excuse). As far as Palin, I don't think the ad takes Obama down a notch at all. Palin is out there, dodging the press, claiming she's things that she's not. The voters need to know about it, and the Obama campaign is right to point it out.

If McCain and Palin were honest about what type of change they stand for, they'd say they're for the same thing Bush is, only on steroids. That's not the kind of change we need.

Posted by: rtfanning | September 9, 2008 1:37 AM

Come now, the analysis is the flawed thing here. I'm tired of people lying to themselves and living in denial to force themselves into believing something that is not true. I was a McCain supporter when the things he proposeed actually WERE different and perhaps really "maverick" from the current Bush/Republican policies. Since that time 8 more years have passed to add to his being that much more a part of the "Washington" he proposes to change and "shake up". The problem is, his laundry list of "changes" offers little that is a change from what we have now. The Sarah Palin distraction and her actual outsider status has become a slight of hand to make us forget that McCain offers less real change now than he ever has. There is nothing new about tax cuts when there are bills to pay for the war McCain and most of those that benefit the most, support. I don't know about Mr. McCain and others, but I have to pay for what I buy and can't pay for it by telling my source of revenue they should keep more of my paycheck so I have less to pay my bills with. How does building a factory and/or hiring labor in China to manufacture goods support the U.S. economy. Are those paychecks spent in America? Is that an investment in America or an investment in lower labor costs, higher management pay for the corporations that do it? If we want to lower taxes at the same time, where's the benefit to the U.S.?
I say we should stop living in denial of ourselves and the truth, grow up and face reality. There is no change with McCain, just more of the same, for all the talk. While I like Palin's spunk a lot, she's been exploited as a the Republican answer to Hillary Clinton's not geting the Democratic nomination. Had she gotten it, Palin may not have been selected as VP. to me that's as or more sexist than anything anyone is complaining about from the blogisphere, just not as blatant or obvious or even discussed for obvious reasons. Also Alaskans put John McCain at the bottom of the list in 2008 Caucus votes. There seems to be a rub there.
Time will tell on a number of things. The most important in my mind, is whether we are willing and able to face truth and reality or whether we'll cower yet again from them and continue to lie to ourselves and to others so we can convince ourselves we're never wrong even if the truth is obvious to others that we're very conflicted and possibly very confused individuals living in denial or ourselves. We're addicted to being right all the time and as with those addicted to substances, refuse to admit we have a problem. Denial is easier in the short term, but will inevitably catch up with us in the long term.

This is like a teenager running for student counsel president ! This is scary for people to back someone just to anti someone else.
Compare Mcain & Obama and clearly Barrack is the better candidate!
I only see Barrack wanting to talk about the issues, not mudslinging! Yes he has to respond to ads that attack him, but I have watched him closely & he keeps trying to stick to the issues of the American people.

Posted by: Louis- Baton Rouge for Obama | September 9, 2008 1:33 AM

To Sarah Palin's two years of "executive experience" as governor, we have to subtract at least about 1 year due to her getting pregnant on the job, delivery, and recuperation.
.
That leaves about one year of "executive experience" left where, for about 1 year, she unsuccessfully tried to sell the State's airplane on e-Bay. She put it on e-Bay THREE times, and NEVER sold on e-Bay.
.
So what's this about "I put it on e-Bay"?

Palin's reputation for standing up to entrenched interests in Alaska is genuine. Her self-description as a leader who "championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress" is harder to square with the facts.

The governor has cut back on pork-barrel project requests, but in her two years in office, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. And as mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million.

B.O. couldn't leave his campaign staff long enough to visit our wounded. On the bridge thing....my god that is rich......yea she changed her mind on that one haha what a flip flopper. But i wonder if their criticizing her for flipping, for being right, or because they voted for it!!!! Thats right kiddies B.O. and Joe both voted for the bridge to nowhere, McCain voted against it but it was only killed by.....you guessed it, our next V.P.....ya all have a nice night....

It's simple. Palin represents all that is phony and wrong with our political system. McCain lost his way. Obama represents critical thinking, not BS

Posted by: Miker | September 9, 2008 1:18 AM

THE FACTS: Palin did abandon plans to build the nearly $400 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport. But she made her decision after the project had become an embarrassment to the state, after federal dollars for the project were pulled back and diverted to other uses in Alaska, and after she had appeared to support the bridge during her campaign for governor.

McCain and Palin together have told a broader story about the bridge that is misleading. She is portrayed as a crusader for the thrifty use of tax dollars who turned down an offer from Washington to build an expensive bridge of little value to the state.

"I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere," she said in her convention speech last week.

That's not what she told Alaskans when she announced a year ago that she was ordering state transportation officials to ditch the project. Her explanation then was that it would be fruitless to try to persuade Congress to come up with the money.

This silly ad doesn't change the fact that Mr. McCain has more GUTS than Mr. Obama by doing what he (Obama) couldn't:
Select an AWESOME VP, who is also a Woman.

Mr. Obama's biggest mistake is this: He didn't choose Hillary as his VP because he thought he was going to shore up his "inexperience" by choosing Biden instead.

Of anybody that should be pissed off, it should be the HIllary supporters who wanted so badly to see the glass ceiling broken. Mr. McCain has simply SHOWN "CHANGE" like Obama hasn't ever.

Mr. McCain beat Mr. Obama at his own game... McCain has been doing this longer than Obama anyways.

I call from beneath the graves of the forgotten; the young lost lives, innocently dedicated to the cause of an unwarranted war of sacrifice and pain.

How can you question the patriotism of another, when you sat there and said not a word, while I was sent to kill the innocent, to slay a giant that did not exist, for my country?

That’s NOT Patriotism!

You said I would find weapons of mass destruction, sooner or later, one day or another, yet I never did.

How can you question the patriotism of another, when you sat there and said not a word, while my family lost all we owned because of an economy created by blood?

That’s NOT Patriotism!

Yes, you can drape yourself in red, white, and blue, but it doesn’t change a thing,
when greed and riches destroy the lives of your people, unpatriotic you remain.

How can you question the patriotism of another, when you sat there and said not a word, while the people lost their jobs, their homes, and their dignity; while you played political games?

That’s NOT Patriotism!

It is the soul of a man that makes him patriotic, not what he wears, it is what a man does that makes him patriotic, not what he says. It is man that looks beyond himself and feels the pain of others, then does what he can to make life better for every citizen of his country, this country, the United States of America!

That’s Patriotism?

1. John McCain is running on the GOP platform, which would ban all abortions, even in the cases of rape and incest.
2. John McCain voted to criminalize doctors who support women in their reproductive choices, even when a womans health is at risk
3. Since 1983, John McCain has vote over 100 times against womens reproductive health choices.

McCain is OUT OF TOUCH with womens lives.

He couldn't even describe it to Stephanopoulos without sounding like a freakin' 'tard. I'm not saying that McCain/Palin is the best bet out there, but the fact that Obama/Biden have fooled such a large portion of the pupulous scares the living bat crap out of me. A bit of digging is showing the true face of Palin. While I am ambivilent about McCain, I feel this was just a strange choice, like a deal with the Devil. Firings/attempts at book banning/where she is on the bridge/leaving Wasilla $19 million in debt from a project she oversaw, these aren't terribly positive and make me wonder how thorough the vetting was and how qualified a candidate is for making such a pick. Let's face it McCain only chose Sara Palin just to Show Obama off because of Hillary frankly I like the way she is acting My way or the highway She won't sit down she reminds me of Bush So go for it McCain really doesn't care He feels the country owes him if he really cared he would have chosen someone that could really run this country If he wasn't able, but he wants the
Presidency so bad that he'll do anything to get elected There is a hell of a difference Joe Biden could take over if needed You have to be crazy to think Palin is fit for vice president This is not a beauty contest But we get what we deserve

It's really too bad the Republicans came up with such a poor candidate.

I was ready to vote for a Repub this time around but there is no way I will be held responsible for electing the VP candidate with the least amount of experience in history. You couple that with the fact that he will be the oldest President in office and you fools are dreaming if you think he'll be elected.

Sure, McCain/Palin will lie, embellish, distort during the campaign but at least we know our country will be safe with them, Obama is a wild card, no security there.

Of course they don't want to hear that thier daughter went to school becouse the dems gave them low interest student loans.
Or when he was injured at work they managed to survive becouse the dems gave us unemployment insurance, food stamps, family medical leave act,medicare/medicaid.
And that every year they get a little extra back on their tax's in earned income thanks to the dems. And when they retire they might get social security, thanks to the dems. And their son can go to school if he survives the war, thanks for the G.I. bill dems! They can feel fairly safe eating their dinner tonight, thanks for the
food safety laws! And maybe feel safer thanks to the consumer product saftey commision. I will be watching these election on public broadcasting, again thank you dems. I will vote this year, thanks for the voting rights act, and the womens right to vote you crazy liberals!

It seems to me that you out there that HATE Barack Obama is racist. The reasons that you guys are coming up with has no basis. It's based on lies and racism. Well ask yourself this, Did George Bush keep us safe? NO. The biggest terrorist attack in US history happened on his watch, or did we all forget that. Will John McCain keep us safe? NO, because he believes the same things that GW Bush believes in which is war for oil (give me another credible reason we are in Iraq) and we will not even look for Osama Bin Laden. Instead all he does is push women in Wheel chairs when he gets mad (you can check it, go to McClarty News) and vote against any benefit to our veterans (so much for country first.)

If you Obama Haters would rather sell out your Childrens future because you are a racist, then that is your cross to bear. Just remember if you elect John McCain(liar) and Sarah (liar/ airhead) Palin your kids will live in a much worst world then there is now and it will be your fault. Just like it is all of you who voted for GW Bush fault for the mortgage meltdown, extremly high gas prices and a decreasing amount of jobs here in America. You guys are constanty ruining our great country. Remember, it's your fault because it did not have to be this way.

We know, for a fact, that Sarah Palin lied about being "against" the infamous Bridge to Nowhere. I don't mean that she flip-flopped. I don't mean she waffled, or equivocated, or mislead, or was disingenuous, or misspoke. I mean she lied outright. Period. She was, in fact, a supporter of the now-mocked symbol of pork and earmarks. She was a supporter during the entire process, up until the now-magical point when the entire thing had devolved into farce, and not even Republicans could attach themselves to such a boondoggle without paying a political price. Then, and only then, did she distance herself from it.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/07/palin-in-06-i-wont-let-sp_n_124591.html
.

And by "distance herself", we mean "kept the money".

We know, for a fact, that Sarah Palin lied about being "against" earmarks. As mayor of her small Alaskan town, she hired a Team Abramoff lobbyist to squeeze Washington for generous funds, funds far in excess of what the average American small town could expect. The lobbyist delivered nearly $27 million worth of earmarks to the town of less than ten thousand people: a fine haul, indeed. She said so herself, in her own handwriting.

http://www.washingtonindependent.com/4328/more-on-palins-true-stand-on-earmarks
.

So she lied. Baldly and repeatedly. McCain is now on a multistate tour, repeating the very same lies -- and for Republicans, they are applause lines. Huzzah to the "anti-pork" governor whose state is more dependent on pork than any other state. Hooray for the "anti-earmarks" candidate who made a name for herself as a champion of the earmark.

The question is: what of it?

There is absolutely no penalty for lying, in politics. None. Zip. Nada. Sarah Palin could stand atop a stage and declare herself moon-goddess of Endor, and it wouldn't make a bit of difference. Yes, the papers would correct her. There would be a few cable stories on how there was no prior record of her being declared a moon-goddess. In the end, however, it would not matter, and it would not matter because Republicans have decided that it does not.

For Republicans, there is no longer any moral taboo whatsoever against lying outright. The only relevant question is whether the lie is effective -- not whether it should have been done in the first place. Karl Rove can rail against the inexperienced nature of one vice presidential candidate -- a Democrat -- and without the slightest bit of explanation (or shame), but happily pipe up with praise for an unequivocally, plainly less experienced Republican pick. It is not expected that he be self-consistent in the slightest. Everyone understands from the outset that his role is to say bad things about Democrats, and good things about Republicans, and if the two things conflict spectacularly it is not considered a symbol of his dishonesty or evidence of a histrionic maliciousness towards factual discourse. It is merely spin. He can make a farce of his own prior arguments -- what does it matter? If he is comfortable with it, and the people who look to him for guidance rally behind it, then we can Newspeak our way into and out of any argument as neat as you please.

So what of it, if offshore drilling will not reduce gas prices. It's fine to say it anyway -- it doesn't matter. So what if the President of the United States says "we do not torture", and then we discover that the White House itself authorized acts that are torture under any rational definition of the word. He's the President, he can lie about anything he likes, as long as it has nothing to do with sex. And honestly, even if it does.

So what of it, if Sarah Palin says crooked things with a straight face? Name me one Republican who will object. Name me one -- just ONE -- diehard conservative who will be angry at the lie, instead of praising her for it. To hell with facts, there is another election to be won.

This is why I consider the Republican Party to be, at this point, a wrecked party. There is no self-consistent philosophy other than the acquisition and protection of their own power: there are certainly no moral or ethical boundaries that the party will internally enforce. John Edwards, a Democrat, had his political career effectively terminated when news of an affair came to light; a Republican can visit a prostitute wearing a diaper, and find himself easily forgiven. You can lie, you can staff your government with morons and ideologues, you can give a speech saying one thing while doing the exact opposite (a Bush specialty, in his State of the Union speeches. We bemoan constantly the Democrats' failure to keep a unified front, in order to pass a more meaningful agenda -- but you would be hard pressed to find even a single, lone Republican in Washington willing to buck the moral collapse of their own party. Such people once existed: they were voted out of office. All that remain are "pseudo-mavericks" like McCain, figures who will countermand every previous belief in order to regain the support of his own Republican party.

Palin may be an unapologetic liar, but there isn't anything even slightly surprising about that because George Bush has been doing it for the last 8 years.

The question is, are Americans actually stupid enough to vote for McCain/Palin who represent the EXACT SAME DISASTEROUS POLICIES that we have had force fed to us the last eight years?

I hope not....

They demean people of intelligence because they know many people of small town America don't have degrees and use it at a fake issue and call people who spent time in academia as elist when many on the right serve on university boards and have part-time professorships. Why can't small town America and Christian conservatives are being used as pawns just as much the Islamic fundamentalist are. Islamic fundamentalist come from small town Middle East and given the same kind of talking points as the evangalicals. They want prayer in school, no choice available to women, and believe to the core that their ideas about worship and country are the best. Wake up small town America you are being played.

-She believes that we are on a mission from God in Iraq
-She believes in abstinence only education, even though her own daughter can't keep her legs together
-She accepted federal money for the bridge to nowhere, and now claims she was against it
-She is actually a grandmother, as Trig is actually Bristol's 1st child
-She is under investigation for abuse of gubernatorial power in Alaska
-She was the mayor of a town of 9,000 people, which is about 3 times larger than my old high school
-She is against abortion, even in cases of rape an invest (wtf?)
-She is against equal pay for equal work for women

I myself, well-- if you want to know about me just google the following terms:

Obama on the Need for Habeas Corpus: Distinguishing Between "Barack the Bomb-Thrower" and "Barack the Guy Running for President"

September 08, 2008 7:30 PM

FARMINGTON HILLS, MICH. -- A fired-up Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., took on his opponents -- "these people," he said incredulously, in a familiar refrain -- for shamelessness and dishonesty.

"I have said repeatedly that there should be no contradiction between keeping America safe and secure and respecting our constitution," Obama said. "During the Republican convention, you remember during the Republican convention, one of them, I don’t know if it was Rudy or Palin...rhey said ‘Well, ya know, Senator Obama is less interested in protecting you from terrorists than...reading them their rights.’"

(It was Palin, who said "Al Qaeda terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America -- he's worried that someone won't read them their rights?")

"Now, let me say this," Obama continued, "first of all you don’t even get to read them their rights until you catch them. So I don’t know what, they should spend more time trying to catch Osama bin Laden and we can worry about the next steps later. Hah! I mean seriously! These folks.

"Catch ‘em first!"

Obama said his position on this "has always been clear. It has always been clear. If you’ve got a terrorist, take ‘em out. Take ‘em out. Anybody who was involved in 9/11 – take ‘em out."

But, the former constitutional law professor argued, "what I have also said is this: that when you suspend habeas corpus -- which has been a principle dating before even our country, it’s the foundation of Anglo-American law -- which says very simply if the government grabs you, then you have the right to at least ask, 'Why was I grabbed?', and say, 'Maybe you’ve got the wrong person.'

"The reason you have that safeguard," he said, "is because we don't always have the right person. We don’t always catch the right person. We may think this is Mohammed the terrorist, it might be Mohammed the cab driver. You may think it’s Barack the bomb thrower, but it might be Barack the guy running for president."

"The reason that you have this principle is not to be soft on terrorism, it’s because that’s who we are," Obama said as the crowd rose to its feet, applauding. "That’s what we’re protecting. Don’t mock the constitution! Don’t make fun of it! Don’t suggest that it’s un-American to abide by what the founding fathers set up! It’s worked pretty well for over 200 years!

"These people!" Obama said.

There's no arguing with the numbers on McCain and Bush - 90% - plain and simple, that's not maverick. (hasn't anyone even seen Top Gun!?) And Palin - http://www.chiefmag.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/2.jpg - that's an inadequate candidate to be the first female vice president if I ever saw one. Are you people for real do you really think a black man is going to win? Just because the media and schools tell us that we are all one does not mean it’s true. Look at how people live, white neighborhoods, black neighborhoods etc. Prejudice is alive and well, do you really think all those blue states are going to vote black and to top it off he has the name Obama what the hell were the Dem’s thinking.
OMG someone said land slide; yeah it will be a land slide for more old white power. Wake up as you can have all the hope you want for something, but that means nothing in reality. Just cuz you drive your ass from the city to the country does not mean you know the people. This country will take white, religion and guns every time over the alternative. If you don't like it move the FUK out. Mark my word Bubba is going to come out in force to ensure no black man is ever president of this country. Now you think I’m prejudice, I’m not I’ve just traveled and lived in many place in this country and what is portrayed on TV is so far from the truth it isn’t even funny. And for the people who think either party is better wake-up, wake-up, wake-up; they are all out to screw us all. One just tells you how there going to screw you and the other talk’s sweet nothings in your ear while you’re getting screwed. Sorry to say only way it will ever change is to burn this fuker to the ground and start over. No one I mean NO ONE PEFRSON at a high level has EVER been held accountable for their actions and WE as IN ALL of you and ME continue to watch it occur like nothing can be done. Voting is no longer an option we can no longer be the answer for the world. DEFEND our country from its shores not on others shores, this country was founded on defense and all we talk about now is offence. WAKE-UP. REPBUP or DEM will not solve the issues only the people who truly want so called change. I don’t want change I want accountability, I want all you F’n people out of my pocket and my life. I don’t care if you have 10 abortions, I don’t care if you don’t believe in god, I don’t care that you are gay, straight etc, but if I want to pray until I’m dead packing guns killing my own food, because you can’t stomach it so you have someone else do it so be it. If you don’t preach to me I won’t preach to you and I won’t shoot you, but if you infringe on my believes, if you infringe on my way of life I will shoot until I’m dead. Do you get it, 99.9% of our issues are do to all of us thinking we know more than the next; that your way of life is better than mine…your all like an old senile woman that has to have your nose in other peoples business. The sad part is they are feeding it and you are eating it left and right. Do you get…DO YOU GET IT??? If they keep us divided…if they keep us divided they can do as they please over and over again. Heather wrote: "Or did something occur in the proccess that led to a change in stand? Why is it not equally likely that Sarah Palin supported the bridge project until something changed that caused her to then oppose it?"

Yes, something did change in the process. Congress raised a gigantic stink about the ridiculousness of the bridge. When Congressional funds for the bridge were lacking, it became clear to Palin that Alaskans would have to pay for a higher percentage of the bridge than originally proposed. So, she decided to save her political future and not ask her constituents to pay for the bridge (though it seems she would have been happy to have the federal government pay for it). She kept all of the Congressional funding anyway and used it for other projects.

Here is what she said in September 2007:
“Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329-million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it’s clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island.”

Note the emphasis on Congress here. If Congress wasn't going to pay for the bridge, then neither would Alaskans.

I'm registered Independent, but I'm voting for McCain-Palin (so are a lot of Reagan Democrats I know ; )

Posted by: JakeD | September 8, 2008 9:31 PM

Anyone who votes Republican this year is more delusional than the candidates they support. Bush 41(former head of the CIA,VP, and president is probably the real leader of this political Cosa Nostra if not a equal partner of this power sharing musical chairs game.
These are the real puppet masters, they throw out the talking points about the left of being elitist and not caring middle america and these same guys other than Rove have advanced degrees and are worth no less than 10 million dollars. People who support them need to extricate their heads out of Limbaugh and Hannity’s asses and see what is really happening to them. McCain is not his own man he confuses stories of his real life with a book he read “The Gulag Archipelago, in which a fellow prisoner - not a guard - silently drew a cross in the dirt with a stick.” An ironic twist to all this is Eliot A. Cohen, a signatory to the PNAC "Statement of Principles", responded in The Washington Post: "There is no evidence that generals as a class make wiser national security policymakers than civilians. George C. Marshall, our greatest soldier statesman after George Washington, opposed shipping arms to Britain in 1940. His boss, Franklin D. Roosevelt, with nary a day in uniform, thought otherwise. Whose judgment looks better?"[

Obama Bin Laden is losing BIG. He swung left and he swung right and still not hitting any ball. He's getting angry, so now he starts making false accusations and calling names. This really shows his true color.

Heather, do you know how the government works? It seems that you might want to read up on Republicans and the filibuster. In addition, you might be surprised to know that from 2001-2006, the Republicans had hold of the House, Senate, and presidency. They've been setting the policies in Washington for 8 years now, especially since the Dems don't have a real majority in the Senate. So, the argument still holds that if you want change from what has been happening in Washington for the past 8 years, the guy who voted "yes" to the vast majority of those measures is not very likely to bring much change. If he were, then why didn't he speak out on any measures of the Bush administration from 2002 onward?

If you don't give two cents about change--if you think things have been going well for the past 8 years--by all means vote for McCain. I can see why you would.

McCain is now also running as a "maverick." Candidate McCain should have to explain exactly how Senator McCain was maverick from 2002-2008. And not showing up to vote does not qualify as maverick, I think we'll agree.

A civil war has broken out during the presidential inauguration for McCain and Palin!

Atheists and Christians are fighting in the streets.

I predict this happening if we continue including religion with politics.

Trust me! I am ready! You religious crazed people are just like the very Terrorist that Bush and company are fighting.

Absolutely no difference in any religion...they all suck balls. Funny how religion is the root to most wars.

Keep your bible babel to yourselves.

What change is Senator McCain talking about? Changes in Banking Regulation and Social Security?

Phil Graham has been/is still Senator McCain's economic adviser. He has also been a USB executive and a paid lobbyist who was principal author of fundamental changes in America's banking regulation. He says American tax payers are, "whiners"!

So let's talk about 11 major bank failures (so far) bailed out with your money from the FDIC.

Now let's add the 3 trillion dollar taxpayer bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - also backed with your money.

Whose retirement funds do you suppose are going to be sacrificed to pay for this bailout? Whose treasury is being used to paper over Wall Street losses while American workers and retirees lose real money?

Why not ask one of the Keating 5?
John McCain helped cause the last bank bailout. Many retirees lost their life savings because John McCain was paid off.

The "change" advertised by John McCain is coming from the same man and the same party that wants to "privatize" Social Security so they can play with your retirement money.

And John McCain thinks the bill for this new massive bailout should be paid for by Mr and Mrs. American Worker and their retired parents.

Senator Obama's middle class tax cuts will help protect working and retired Americans from footing the bill for Graham and McCain's casino binge. That's not socialism. That's justice.

John McCain, Phil Graham and the Republican plan for taxes and Social Security require you to put up the stakes for a bunch of stock market gamblers. But when they gamble you lose.

That's just not fair. And it's not change we can afford.

Obama is not coming down a notch by speaking to Palin in this ad. He is speaking to McCain and the ad is from both Obama and Biden who appear at the end.

As far as your comment that its okay for McCain to use lobbyists - hey, you forget he is against lobbyists and lobbying. Yet they are running his campaign. That is not relevant. You are way too easy on that point.

As far as the bridge to nowhere, if you do not call that an outright lie, then you are misleading yourself. There is not way she can say she killed the bridge or that it was her intention. She simply could not get the deal done. You should do some simple fact checking on this and you will see it is clear Palin lied on that. Don't soften the blow because this is a female pit bull, they bite like any other dog.

Wiel wrote: "However, when he made flip flops on many arguments for a change and chose a consummate Washington insider as his running mate, we had a status quo ticket repeating the old mantra from the primaries. Let’s wake up. The primaries are over and the change argument is gone to Republicans."

Wow. How hard do you have to contort reality to make this seem valid to you?

The Republican presidential candidate is a Washington insider. He once referred to the media as his "base." He's been on Face the Nation more than any other Senator...EVER. He's lived in Washington for most of his adult life. You people insist that this is about the top of the ticket...well, then yours is about as much of an insider as you can get.

How has the change argument "gone" to the Republicans? I guess folks believe it because they keep insisting that they'll do it, even though they refuse to explain anything at all what they will change.

As for flip flopping, here is Senator John McCain in 2001:

"But I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us, at the expense of the middle class Americans who MOST need tax relief."

See it in the Congressional Record:
http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getpage.cgi?dbname=2001_record&page=S5789&position=all

Candidate McCain puts these same tax cuts at the heart of his policy. What about his "conscience" now? Or does he just think middle-class voters are better off now than they were in 2001?

This is just one of his many flip flops. Here are a few more: overturning Roe v. Wade, "agents of intolerance," how easy it would be to win in Iraq, immigration reform, offshore drilling, dirty campaigning, 527s, the Confederate flag, and on and on.

Oh yes, what were you saying about flip flopping?

Oh, right, you were saying you wanted change. Well, with John McCain, I promise you, you'll get lots of that. These days, it seems like we never know which John McCain will show up.

Flip flop, much?

On lying. Did Obama lie about campaign funding reform? Did Obama lie about opposing the FISA Bill? Did Obama lie about being against off shore drilling?

Or did something occur in the proccess that led to a change in stand? Why is it not equally likely that Sarah Palin supported the bridge project until something changed that caused her to then oppose it?

The issue of "for it, before your against it" seems only valid when you make a sudden change in stand, without a rational reason.

I thought I read that she came to oppose the bridge project when it started running over budget.

The allegations that George Bush committed genocide in Iraq and abused his power are nothing compared to the sacred cows of the Democrat party. FDR sent Japanese American citizens to concentration camps during WWII. He took away their home, jobs, and their civil rights. Harry Truman was responsible for dropping two atomic bombs killing hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese men, women and children. Then Truman got us involved in the Korean War which resulted in the deaths of thousands of American soldiers and civilians. Lyndon Johnson lied about the Gulf of Tonkin incident and involved us in the Vietnam War which resulted in the deaths of thousands of American soldiers and civilians. If anyone committed genocide and abused power on a mass scale, it was FDR, Harry Truman and LBJ.

Try sitting on the fence for a little while before making your ultimate decision.

If you can honestly say that you are happy about the gas prices and how we have been treated as a "Whole country" for the past 8 years, then by all means vote for McCain.

If you are voting for McCain for the sole reason that Obama is black, then my friend you are an idiot. I call stupid people Ni66ers no matter what color they are, so I guess you know what you are now...the very thing that you despise so much.

My background German, Irish, English...blue eyed...Blond hair...6'2"...hell I am as American as American gets. I put my full trust in Obama instead of McCain...Big oil should not be running our country....the people of this great country should be.

Posted by: stupid people... | September 8, 2008 9:00 PM

I find this rhetoric of "Obama acts like he's running against Palin" really strange. Since when are the respective people on the tickets only allowed to talk about the person in their equivalent position? Following this logic, this means that McCain can only talk about Obama, and vice versa. And Palin can only talk about Biden, and vice versa.

Oh, but wait: that's not what's happening, is it?

Look, for those of you who are confused (and apparently the Washington Post is among them now) this is a campaign between two tickets. That's why all the signs now read "McCain Palin" and "Obama Biden." See, they're called running mates. The Presidential candidate and Vice Presidential candidate no longer run separately in this country, it turns out.

Further, it's just bizarre to say that Obama is "lowering" himself by including Palin in an ad. Should Biden now run his own separate ads that criticize Palin's lies? Besides, it's not like Palin was the focus of this ad. But since she sells stories, she is what the media focuses on. Ugh...

For those who claim that this ad resembles McCain's earlier ads, give me a break. When Obama puts Paris Hilton in a political ad, give me a call. This seems to be about the candidates' records versus their claims. How is it lowering the campaign to point such discrepancies out?

Posted by: ethel08 | September 8, 2008 8:59 PM

It is desperation time for Obama. The change we can believe is does not work anymore, since there is no change we can believe in what Obama has done so far. It was believable when Obama fought against party stalwart Hillary and Bill Clinton. However, when he made flip flops on many arguments for a change and chose a consummate Washington insider as his running mate, we had a status quo ticket repeating the old mantra from the primaries. Let’s wake up. The primaries are over and the change argument is gone to Republicans.

AMERICANS ARE SO DAMN STUPID! Right in front of you is empirical evidence of the destruction of Bush/Cheney and McCain's tenure and destructive policies on your lives, but you continue to ignore the problems because you would rather support someone that does not have your best interest. WTF is wrong with you people? You’ve obviously failed to analyze your situations including your foreclosures, job loss, diminished health care benefits. You are falling for the Republican B.S. again. LISTEN UP! Republicans are not going to save you, they can’t because they are the creators of your problems and it is in their best interest to continue to destroy the middle class to ensure that the top 1% has most of the wealth. Don't you people realize that the Middle East is imposing higher oil prices as revenge for the war in Iraq? Don't you people know that the Bush Admin. has allowed China to buy up most of our debt, which puts America in a subordinate position? Don't you people know that John McCain's top advisors are lobbyist intent upon creating the next crisis similar to the Subprime crisis? McCain was one of the major participants in the last banking crisis, the Savings and Loan scandal; he is the last of the criminal Keating Five. If you continue to vote for President’s interested in accruing more wealth, you will end up working as immigrant white nigge**, in china and elsewhere. Start applying for your green cards because the American jobs are leaving quicker than John McCain’s hair.

Sexism is alive and well in America. If Palin had been a male, working out of the home would not be an issue. Because she criticized the leftist media, they are going after her. The media never went after Obama for accepting money from a felon, Tony Rezco, to help build his home. They never went after Obama for doing political favors for the same Tony Rezco. Gee, I wonder why? Yes, sexism is alive and well in America.

Why did you post that info about the Alaskan national Guard? Sarah Palin has no involvement in the actual operations. When they serve overseas they are federalized and come under the command of the President. Even when they conduct disaster relief operations within Alaska they inform the governor what they are going to do, but she doesn't take "command" in the true sense of the word. Basically the Republicans are lying when they talk up Palin's "commander-in-chief" cedentials.

Which wouldn't be the first time they've been caught out.

No. Just "thanks" is the more accurate narrative. You ask for money, you get money, you take money. Thanks.

Saying "no thanks" or saying "if we need a bridge we'll build it ourselves" is saying, "Here, have the money back. We don't need your stinking money here in Alaska."

But that's not what happened. What happened is that when the earmark was proposed, it looked like Congress would pay for the lion's share of the bridge. When it turned out that Congress wouldn't and that Alaska would have to pony up some money, there was no more bridge. But Alaska still took the money--you know, to spend as they saw fit. Again: "Thanks!"

They also then used earmarks to build an approach road to the bridge--the bridge that they "killed." Makes sense, doesn't it?

But Palin never actually issued any orders, a fact you can verify for yourself here:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/mcclatchy/20080903/pl_mcclatchy/3035478

Because what matters is what experience she *actually* has, not what experience other governors might have.

We don't need a leader who hasn't actually led. Especially not one who disavows everything she once claimed to believe in while hiding behind the latest polls.

They claim they'll "change" Washington, but how can they do that when they're copying Obama's campaign? That's not leading, that's following.

We don't need followers to lead America. We need leaders.

Frankly, I can't wait for Obama to get elected. Since there will have to be an increase in payroll taxes for Social Security, Medicare, universal healthcare, all those employed will have to pay much more. I won't have to pay a dime since I will be retired in a few years. I'll be living in a house that I own outright, while the rest of you pay $8 or more for gas, pay your high rent, and ever increasing payroll taxes. In addition, Obama wants to eliminate Federal income taxes for seniors who make less than $50,000 a year.

To all you young, employed Obama supporters who will be working until you're at least 70, I want to thank you, in advance, for paying exorbitant taxes to fund my early retirement. Go Obama!

These Obama supporters make me fear for this country. Wish they would all go away and listen to their ipods at a Starbuck's somewhere. Their elitist views make them think that I would be better off if I was more like them. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! GO MCCAIN!!!!!!

I don't blame Palin for this...she's just reading what people tell her to say. I blame McCain and his advisors. 8 years ago McCain would have never allowed his campaign to directly...contradict the truth and repeat it over and over again. The irony of this is that McCain's campaign is all about "country first" but apparently he's willing to compromise his principles to increase his chances of winning the presidencey. Just a couple of examples:

1. McCain against extending Bush's tax cuts...now for.

2. McCain against over-turning Roe v. Wade. Now for.

3. McCain say's families are off limits now. Years ago he made jokes about Chelsea Clinton's appearance.

4. McCain was quoted as saying Iraq would be an easy win for the US. Now he says he always knew that Iraq would be a difficult fight.

The list goes on.

Why is Obama spending so much time shooting at Palin? He's virtually ignoring McCain. He acts like Palin is running for President. He's been desparately searching Palin's closets for skeletons and monsters yet seems only able to catch and waive dust bunnies in our faces. Obviously, the loser is scared. I'd rather the candidates show what THEY can do instead of wasting our time knocking the opposition.

Posted by: Hombre from Alaska | September 8, 2008 8:32 PM

There's plenty of evidence out there to show that she lied. She was quoted supporting the bridge (before it became a political issue and she wanted to deny responsibility):

"The Anchorage Daily News quoted her in October 2006 as saying she would continue state funding for the bridge. "The window is now, while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist," she said."

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-08-31-palin-bridge_N.htm

Now, compare that to her style of "management" in the open letter:

http://www.thepresidentialcandidates.us/about-sarah-palin-a-letter-from-anne-kilkenny/741/

A letter which has been confirmed by Snopes (and the author thereof has been interviewed on NPR):

http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/sarahpalin.asp

If you look at that, you'll see that she's very secretive, that she avoids responsibility when things go wrong, and that she is paranoid about loyalty. Those qualities remind me of President Bush. The country is on the wrong track. That isn't "change" it's more of the same.

Alaska _KEPT_ the money earmarked for the bridge! They just spent it on other things.

The only thing they know how to change is their tune.

(from Wikipedia)

Alaska Air National Guard units are trained and equipped as part of the United States Air Force. The same ranks and insignia are used and National Guardsmen are eligible to receive all United States military awards. The Alaska Guard also bestows a number of state awards for local services rendered in or to the state of Alaska.

One recent development involving the Alaska Air National Guard has been interception of Russian flights that intrude into U.S. territory. According to the website for the 176th Wing of the Alaska Air National Guard, "The 176th Air Control Squadron maintained North American air sovereignty by detecting, monitoring and escorting 22 Russian bombers from within its area of operations."

National Guard units can be mobilized at any time by presidential order to supplement regular armed forces, and upon declaration of a state of emergency by the governor of the state in which they serve. Units include:

168th Air Refueling Wing, Eielson Air Force Base
176th Wing, Kulis Air National Guard Base

The Alaska Army National Guard is composed of approximately 1850 soldiers and maintains 77 armories and other facilities, including Fort Greely (as of 2006). Garrison/HQ at Fort Richardson, Alaska, the units include:

297th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade
38th Troop Command
49th Missile Defense Battalion
1-207th Regiment (GS)
2-207th Regiment (GS)
207th Aviation Regiment
103rd WMD Civil Support Team
Alaska Multi-Functional Regional Training Brigade

Since World War II the Alaska Army National Guard had not seen significant overseas deployments of its Army National Guard. This changed in 2004 when a company of infantry was mobilized to serve in Iraq, serving with the Hawaii Army National Guard's 29th brigade in 2005. In 2005 and 2006 smaller detachments were deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. An infantry battalion was deployed to the middle east in 2006. Additional deployments are scheduled for 2007. The Alaska Army National Guard's aviation units have seen a series of company sized rotations to Iraq, unfortunately including the loss of a helicopter and crew in January 2006.

These deployments seem small in comparison to the units that other states have deployed. However given the small size of Alaska's population and National Guard they represent a very large percentage of the Alaska Army National Guard. When young men are deployed there is a particular impact on smaller "Alaska Bush" villages that have a subsistence lifestyle.

The 49th Missile Defense Battalion (GMD) is an Alaska Army National Guard unit that is permanently on active duty at Fort Greely, as part of the 100th Missile Defense Brigade (GMD).

In 2008, the Alaska Guard began transforming the 207th Infantry Group into the modular 297th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade. It had originally been intended to become the 207th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, prior to the National Guard Rebalance Initiative. In addition the 38th Troop Command was stood up to provide command and control for miscellaneous units.

Alaska also maintains a state militia, the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF). This force is federally recognized, but is separate from the National Guard and reports to the Governor of Alaska as Commander-in-Chief. They service the state exclusively, especially when the National Guard is deployed and unavailable.

Democrats ought to be ashamed of their deeds and throwing american flags into trash right after their comparitively GRIM convention this year. We need to slap them on the face and throw them out of congress

What kind of fairy tale land do you people live in???

The flag story was totally bogus? Does the truth matter to any of you???

Okay, I have had it. I am invoking the Doomsday vote. I have had it with all this muslim extremist garbage. I am voting for McCain. And every other damn Republican on my ballot.

I want the EPA abolished. I want fundamentalist churches given all the money and power they need to totally take control over this country. I want an Evangelist TV preacher in every cabinet position in the White House.

I want war with Iran and N. Korea and the threat of the same for Russia.

I want the assault on our constitution by the Republicans to contine until we have no more rights.

Let's hunt down and kill every animal so we no longer have to bicker over which species to save and not bother to save.

Gut out all public schools and vouchers so we can send every kid to a Christian fundamentalist madrassa.

Kill social security. We should be able to do what ever we want with our own money.

Yes, anarchy for all right wing fundamentalist Christians who walk with God.

Take me Lord, take me now and show me the light. I'm tired of following the dark side. Take me and all my money Lord!!!

Wrong. The issue is whether Palin rejected the Bridge To Nowhere money. It has nothing to do with any other civic officials.

Try to maintain focus.

She is bragging she killed the project. But still accepted the money.

Got it??

Yes, I understand. But since you have already allocated and approved the money could you send it to us and we will rename a project and allocate the money for something that looks good? No bridges okay? I promise.

Okay, but you have to put the money in a project that looks good so we can deny it is from the Pork Barrel account.

Hey, thanks! I guess I owe Sen. Stevens dinner now. Free money!!

Has anyone else read this story about a possible Affair Sarah Palin had? That is just one of the Scandals listed at this site. http://www.hotpres.com

This site has the inside scoop about the Palin Dui Secret, http://www.duihelpguide.com Why hasnt the news covered this?

This site has background info on sarah Palin Bio, Pics, Videos, Alot of Polls like how many people actually think that she is attractive? http://www.theveep.com

Despite all of this, and her lack of experiance she would probably make a much better president then McCain., Because like Obama she hasnt been corrupted by washington yet. We should probably reverse the ticket Palin/McCain.

Anyone who votes Republican this year is more delusional than the candidates they support. Bush 41(former head of the CIA,VP, and president is probably the real leader of this political Cosa Nostra if not a equal partner of this power sharing musical chairs game.
Whose judgment looks better?"[
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/uselection2008/johnmccain/2581086/John-McCain-accused-of-plagiarising-Wikipedia-for-speeches.html. Even if you don’t like Obama there is no-way a sane person can want this continued blatant fleecing of our Nation.

The US media of today is embaressingly disgraceful.

They dare not uncover Palin lies for fear they may be turned down for Whitehouse press parties.

Thats all the new newspeople of today care for: being invited to the White house special events etc etc because the employers they represent are only interested in raking in profits and ratings.

The US media is letting the US public drown and the US will someday hang itself because the media wont tell the US public about the rope slowly being tied around its neck.

MEMO TO MCCAIN-PALIN: EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE (ESPECIALLY PROVINCIAL EXPERIENCE) PROVED TO BE HIGHLY OVERRATED BY PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH!
Lest we forget, Republican President George W. Bush’s government experience was limited to “executive experience.” President George W. Bush served two full terms as governor of Texas before he was elected President of the United States. President George W. Bush had no Nation Government experience. Governor Palin, like President George W. Bush, has no National Government experience. Governor Palin, like President George W. Bush, offers only provincial “executive experience.”
President George W. Bush’s provincial “executive experience” proved disastrous for all Americans. Indeed, President George W. Bush—with his “executive experience” only resume—proved so disastrous as President, McCain-Palin and the Republican Party are now trying to disassociate themselves from President George W. Bush.
Governor Palin has less “executive experience” than President George W. Bush. If President George W. Bush—with all of his “executive experience”—destroyed prosperity and peace in American, one can only image what destruction Governor Palin—with her "executive experience"—will bring down on Americans. Americans—democrats, republicans, and independents alike—literally cannot afford another 4 years of Bush/Palin type of “executive experience.”
Governor Palin’s “executive experience” is extremely provincial, limited to a remote state with a mere population of some 700 thousand. By contrast, I live in a county with +3 million Americans. More than 300 million people live in the United States. The challenges of meeting the needs of 700 thousand do not compare to the challenges of the needs of 300 million Americans. Michigan’s dying manufacturing economy shares no similarities to Alaska’s boon oil economy. The needs of 300 million Americans are more desperate from 8 years of President George W. Bush policies and actions—guided by Bush’s so called “executive experience.”
Americans need National Government experience—not provincial “executive experience.” I’ll take my chances on Obama-Biden—two men with National Government experience who understand the difference between the economies of Michigan and Alaska. I’ll take my chances on Obama-Biden, two men who work for all Americans, not just a handful of Alaska residences.
Governor Palin, like President George W. Bush, has the wrong type of job experience: provincial “executive experience.”

I was ready to vote for a Dem this time around but there is no way I will be held responsible for electing the candidate with the least amount of experience in history. You couple that with the fact that he's the most liberal Senator in office and you fools are dreaming if you think he'll be elected.

Bush has destroyed America, just look at his record in office, he was handed the biggest surplus in US history and he quickly turned it into the biggest deficiet in US history.

We the people are poor in the US, we are scraping by by budgeting carefully, while Bush goes on a useless war mongering spree in Iraq and has blown away a $Trillion almost, with $8 Billion a month going to Iraq war costs. So who is getting rich? not you or me, its the special interests and the war profiteers and the Haliburtons, these people are the ones to gain, and who are these people? They are connected to Bush and Cheyney.

This is not about loyalty to a party, this about loyalty to your nation.

For heavens sake, lets not keep repeating our mistakes, we must give Democrats a chance to turn things around.

Enough of McCain and the Republicans ruining our nation with useless wars, we need that money here in our country to help our people.

Imagine what we could do with $8 Billion a month for the American people.

The last 7 years of lies, and deception and cronyism is enough, what will it take to wake you republicans up?

Are we to elect hatemongers to office, is that the only criteria left? Who can bomb more people?

We will collapse on ourselves if this wasteful spending is not curbed.

The housing collapse is the worst, the jobless rate is the worst, the deficeit is the worst, American standing in the world is the worst, our economy is in shambles, US auto industry is almost dead, so is every sector if US manufacturing, all our high paying jobs have been outsourced to India or China, our enviroment is in peril, there is no healthcare, no good education with falling grades and the worst education standards in the west.

Food prices are way up and so are gas prices and pretty much everything else.

Wake up America!

"Palin said "thanks but no thanks" to the bridge. Perhaps misleading, but certainly an accurate narrative. Posted by: JGolden"

She said yes to the earmark. when she found out that that earmark was going to cost Alaska money, she said no to the bridge. The earmark she kept. That is how Alaska has that humongous surplus in its bank account that permitted Palin to send out a massive bribe to every Alaskan or Alaska Resident of more than one year.

Truthful she isn't. Crooked she most definitely is.

Cheney and Rove both dodged the draft. Look at the statement of principles by the PNAC. Rumsfeld was a good friend of Saddam Huessin in the 80’s Cheney didn’t want Nelson Mandela free.

McCain's the one who calls himself and Palin mavericks in his advertisements, but simply saying something over and over doesn't make it true.

Fact is, Palin supported the bridge to nowhere when it was politically expedient, i.e., when she was running to become governor. And then, when costs rose and overall funding for the project fell short, she reluctantly dropped the idea. "Much of the public's attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here," Palin said. "But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened." So does that mean the money went back to the federal government? Nope. Alaska kept the bridge money and spent it elsewhere, saving the taxpayers nothing.

Is that saying "thanks but no thanks" to the bridge to nowhere? Nope. And saying that it is is a bald-faced lie.

Non-partisan PolitiFact.com is more diplomatic; it rates Palin’s position a Full Flop.

You wonder why you cant find a job, or you're making less money now than you were 8 years ago????
Ask McCain, he propped up this RAPING of the AMERICAN GOVERNMENT funds. And we have no recall, no warranty to what , where , how, or why , BUT EVERY DAY MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of AMERICAN MONEY is flowing overseas, and JOHN MCCAIN VOTED FOR EVERY MILITARY Iguess SELLING OUT AMERICA is tatamount to being a MAVERICK, i guess hes just NOT a MAVERICK for AMERICA

I guess I have to do the job reporters refuse to do. Here is and excerpt from an article in the Anchorage Daily News regarding Palin cancelling the bridge.

http://www.adn.com/front/story/343508.html

A common target for earmark snipers is the so-called "bridge to nowhere" plugged by Alaska Rep. Don Young into the five-year transportation bill in 2005. Congress stripped the earmarks directing the spending but let the state keep the money to use on the bridge if it wanted.

Palin ruffled feathers when she announced - without giving the delegation advance notice - that the state was killing the Ketchikan bridge to Gravina Island, site of the airport and a few dozen residents.

Palin's office said a state transportation official had earlier told Stevens the project was too expensive. Palin has said the federal funding was short and Congress clearly wasn't going to pay for the rest of such a controversial bridge.

Barack Hussein Obama is a marxist. As we watched Jeremiah Wright it became clear he is also a racist bigot. When he disses Hillary, we learned he was also stupid!

Posted by: Linda | September 8, 2008 7:46 PM

WEell, Barack has agreed with his party most of the time because he is running on a ticket and a platform that says he is a mainstream Democrat. So, you see, if he votes with his party most of the time it is because he IS with his party most of the time.

By the same logic we might conclude that John votes with George most of the time he IS with George most of the time. BUT, John wants us to believe that he ISN'T with George most of the time. just 95% of the time, a big difference.

There is no more truth in the McCain Campaign than there ever was in either Bush Campaign. John is just Like George right down to his contempt for the truth.

So lets hope that people who claim they don't like to be lied to reject a Party that believes that the lie is the fundamental element of any political campaign.

Sorry folks, the Democrats of today are like nerds in a high school senior year. It was appalling to hear most of the Republicans who spoke at their convention taking cheap shot attack insults on Democrats, half truths and worse.

However, that is what the Bush administration lived and is dying on . . . half truths and lies.

Remember this is the Republican Party that allowed a major attack on their country on their watch (9/11), invaded a country totally unconnected with that attack and killed thousands and thousands of civilians, and have obscenely bankrupted the United States with overspending - by billions and billions and billions of dollars.

Accusing Democrats of being irresponsible spenders is simply lies. Republicans are the ones who have grossly overspent public tax money; it is not Obama who has been the fiscal liability, nor was it Clinton.

It is the Republic Party who have run up the federal debt to enormous levels.

Witness Cheney and Halliburton and all their oil industry/cia friends who have benefited at the expense of the common American citizen. And the Bush oil dynasty. Grotesque.

McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time. He is just more of the same. A pimp for the rich and the powerful.

It's a sad fact that the 9/11 attacks occurred on Bush and Cheney's watch . . . that's simply true. For whatever reasons, they failed to protect America - and they had lots of advance intelligence. I take no pride in saying this, but it is undeniably true.

The Republicans failed to provide decent government - it's time they were moved out of the way. Time for the Republicans to spend some time in the penalty box for their idiocy - if not serving time in jail.

Anyone who votes Republican this year is more delusional than the candidates they support. Bush 41(former head of the CIA,VP, and president is probably the real leader of this political Cosa Nostra if not a equal partner of this power sharing musical chairs game.

Oops- New Post by the Wash Post-- Nice set up for Camp Obama- the tide IS changing!
Stevens is certainly no supporter of the Gov. who embarassed him!

Stevens: No Action for 'Bridge to Nowhere' by Palin
By Paul Kane
Count Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) as a defender of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's position on the controversial "Bridge to Nowhere" project.

Stevens, who once threatened to resign his Senate seat in 2005 if $223 million for the bridge project was defeated, told reporters today that Palin was never a supporter of the project, which has quickly become a bone of contention in defining the GOP vice-presidential nominee's self proclaimed image as a maverick reformer who took on "the good ol' boys network" of Alaska Republicans.

"I don't remember her ever campaigning for it. As a matter of fact, she was very critical of it at the time

Cindy:

Actually, in addition to McCain, Obama is running against wrong perceptions. The perception that Sarah Palin is just a wholesome, truthful, good ol' hockey mom from Wasilla will be peeled away in due time.

According to some opinion, Bush adopted McCain's line of thinking after 9/11 in order to have a line of thinking. So McCain is simply voting for his own policies 90% of the time. Obama has no policies whatsoever, and if the Democrats had been smarter they would have supported Hillary who had the primary vote, after all, and had Obama take the VP slot to balance the ticket. Most likely McCain and Palin will be in office for January.

Posted by: Charles Smyth | September 8, 2008 7:23 PM

Whoa. Good ad. I'm a supporter of Obama/Biden, but I'm of the opinion that racism will win out in 08 and McCain and Palin will win. It is sad but true; Palin is an avowed racist, according to sources, and McCain even told people in 2004 "I hate the Gooks." Very interesting that the American people (mainly white America) is eating it up. It says something very dire about the ideological state of the nation. And, yes, I believe Obama should discuss Palin also, since she seems to be the only reason McCain is winning (he was not winning on his own merits before Palin signed up. Here's a woman, getting a heavy amount of female votes from those who supported Clinton, whose views are in stark contrast to Clinton's. Wow. Well, thank God I didn't support it, regardless of whatever happens. Obama/Biden '08, before it's too late.

From everything I've read about the Bridge to Nowhere, Palin was 100% for it until Congress asked Alaska to kick in matching funds. Suddenly she was 'against it' and by this time public outcry *the other reason she turned 'against it')had essentially killed the massive earmark. She did kep some (all?) of it though, and laid a Road to Nowhere where the Bridge would have been. Gee, Sara, why did you use EARMARK money to lay a ROAD to a BRIDGE you wer AGAINST? Too funny.

Sarah Palin lies about her support for the bridge. She doesn't lie every time she talks about it. Sometimes she uses a bit more nuance to weasel her way around it. But, she has told more than one bald faced lie about it already. And this even though she's afraid to talk to the press!

The stark reality is that Sarah Palin was a big supporter of the bridge and campaigned for it. Eventually she was forced to pull the plug because Alaska couldn't convince the US taxpayers to cover the whole cost. Rather than ponying up some of their money for this boondoggle, they pulled the plug.

Sarah Palin begs for federal handouts while giving energy assistance rebate checks to the people of Alaska. If she was a true fiscal conservative she write the state budget so it did not require federal charity.
