By Robert Barnes
MEDIA, Pa. -- With Sarah Palin in a red leather jacket and American Chopper dude Paul Teutul on stage, the McCain campaign took on a born-to-be-wild vibe a rally at the courthouse square here.

Palin introduced Teutul -- founder of the Orange County Choppers and the host, with his sons, of American Chopper on the TLC channel -- as he rode onstage on a white chopper, a type of motorcycle, dedicated to POW-MIAs.

Teutul noted McCain's years in a Vietnamese prison.

"How many people out there love their country and the military?'' asked Teutul, dressed in a black sleeveless T-shirt that showed off his heavily tattooed arms.

The campaign said Orange County Choppers wanted to present the bike (see picture here) to McCain to commemorate his service, but will keep it to display at memorials and "support our troops" events as a tribute to veterans.

McCain last month was the star at a bikers gathering in Sturgis, S.D., where he made fun of Democratic rival Barack Obama's European tour. "As you may know, not long ago a couple hundred thousand Berliners made a lot of noise for my opponent,'' McCain said. "I'll take the roar of 50,000 Harleys any day."

Today, McCain called the white chopper "marvelous.''

"Sarah and I are going to get on that chopper and ride it right to Washington,'' he said.

JDude, it looks like your capacity to reason is very limited. I shall try to explain as clearly as possible. The 'fact' that Obama served on the Board of CAC (the Chicago Annenberg Challenge) says nothing about anything. God Bless Obama for working so hard and dedicating his time to community service which aimed to "promote leadership" amongst young students and develop their "math/science achievement" WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SERVED THE COMMUNITY TO HELP THOSE LESS FORTUNATE??? WHEN DID YOU MENTOR A KID?? When was the last time you helped a child gain leadership skills, self-confidence - tutored a child in math/science to help our American youngster compete with foreigners who are quickly gaining ground?
WHEN?
Do no ridicule Obamaa's community organizing. HE worked in consort with ACORN, which promotes according to their site: http://www.acorn.org/index.php?id=12341&no_cache=1
Fair, Affordable housing, better schools, and voter participation. This is CRUCIAL in helpinf under-served minorities make it and help them gain the skills and the resources they need to participate in our society and democracy.

SHAME ON YOU, sir, for belittling his giving back to the people, the least fortunate, of society. You know, with a Law degree from Harvard (In your dreams you had one) he could have done anything. I wouldn;t have been able to resist the siren song of Wall Street. But he did. When was the last time you gave back? Also, he was a community organizer BEFORE Law school, after he graduated from Columbia, with the faith-based charity called the Developing Communities Project.

"It was made up of eight Catholic parishes when he got there and had one staff member. He was its director, meaning he was in charge. He made decisions about it, including staffing, budgets, etc. And when he left in 1988 to go to law school, he had grown its budget from $70,000 to $400,000, its staff from 1 to 13 people. More important, he created a job training program for this community and a college prep tutoring program."

City council of Wasilla
See also: Electoral history of Sarah Palin
Sarah Palin was elected twice to the city council of Wasilla, in 1992 and 1995. Palin says she entered politics because she was concerned that revenue from a new Wasilla sales tax would not be spent wisely.[21]

She ran for Wasilla city council in 1992, at age 28, against John Hartrick, a local telephone company worker, on a promise to bring "my progressive, competitive attitude" to the government.[22][23] She won 530 votes to John Hartrick’s 310.[22] On the council, she successfully opposed a measure to curtail the hours at Wasilla's bars by two hours, which surprised Hartrick because she was then a member of a church that advocated abstinence from alcohol.[22] After serving on the city council for three years, she ran for reelection against R’nita Rogers in 1995, winning 413 votes to Rogers' 185.[24] According to Laura Chase of Wasilla, Palin as city councilwoman mentioned to her colleagues in 1995 that she saw the book Daddy's Roommate in the library and did not think it belonged there.[25] According to the City of Wasilla Library records, there was never a request for the library to remove the book.[26]

Palin did not complete her second term on the city council because she ran for mayor in 1996. Throughout her tenure on the city council and the rest of her career, Palin has been a registered Republican.[27]

Mayor of Wasilla
Main article: Mayoralty of Sarah Palin
Palin served two terms (1996–2002) as mayor of Wasilla. At the conclusion of Palin's tenure as mayor in 2002, the town had about 6,300 residents,[28] and it is now the fifth-largest population center in the state.[29]

In 1996, Palin defeated three-term incumbent mayor John Stein,[30] on a platform targeting wasteful spending and high taxes[31] and introducing abortion, gun rights, and term limits as campaign issues.[32] Although the election was a nonpartisan blanket primary, the state Republican Party ran advertisements on her behalf.[32]

First term

Wasilla City Hall

Location of Wasilla, AlaskaShortly after taking office in October 1996, Palin eliminated the position of museum director and asked for updated resumes and resignation letters from top officials, including the police chief, public works director, finance director and librarian.[33] Palin stated this request was to find out their intentions and whether they supported her.[33] She temporarily required department heads to get her approval before talking to reporters, saying that they first needed to become acquainted with her administration's policies.[33] She created the position of city administrator,[32] and reduced her own $68,000 salary by 10%, although by mid-1998 this was reversed by the city council.[34][35]

According to city librarian Mary Ellen Emmons, Palin inquired in October 1996 as to whether Emmons would object to library censorship.[36] Palin later spoke publicly about the issue, saying she had no particular books or other material in mind for removal.[36] No books were removed from the library.[37][38][39]

Four months later, in January 1997, Palin fired Emmons and Police Chief Irl Stambaugh, stating that she did not feel they fully supported her efforts to govern the city.[40] Following expressions of public support for Emmons and a personal meeting, Palin rescinded the firing of Emmons the next day,[37] stating that her concerns had been alleviated, and also stating that Emmons agreed to support Palin's plan to merge the town's library and museum operations.[40] Stambaugh, who had supported Palin's opponent in the election, filed a wrongful termination lawsuit alleging that his termination violated his contract, reflected gender discrimination, and was for political reasons;[41] he said, for example, that he had opposed a bill in the state legislature that would lift some restrictions on carrying concealed weapons, a bill supported by Palin.[42] The court dismissed his case, ruling that the mayor had the right to fire city employees for any reason, including a political one, or for no reason at all.[43]

Despite a turbulent first year, Palin gained broad favor with Wasilla voters. She kept a jar with the names of Wasilla residents on her desk, and once a week she pulled a name from it and picked up the phone; she would ask: "How's the city doing?"[38] Using income generated by a 2% sales tax that was enacted before she was on the city council,[44] Palin cut property taxes by 75% and eliminated personal property and business inventory taxes.[45][46] Tapping municipal bonds, she made improvements to the roads and sewers[47] and increased funding to the Police Department.[32] She also oversaw new bike paths and procured funding for storm-water treatment to protect freshwater resources.[46] At the same time, she reduced spending on the town museum and blocked construction of a new library and city hall.[46] Palin ran for re-election against Stein in 1999 and won,[48][49] with a majority of 74%.[50] Palin was also elected president of the Alaska Conference of Mayors.[47]

Second term
During her second term as mayor, Palin introduced a ballot measure proposing the construction of a municipal sports center to be financed by a 0.5% sales tax increase.[51] The $14.7 million Wasilla Multi-Use Sports Complex was built on time and under budget, but the city spent an additional $1.3 million because of an eminent domain lawsuit caused by the failure to obtain clear title to the property before beginning construction.[51] The city's long-term debt grew from approximately $1 million to $25 million through voter-approved indebtedness of $15 million for the sports complex, $5.5 million for street projects, and $3 million for water improvement projects. A city council member defended the spending increases as being caused by the city's growth during that time.[52]

She also hired the Anchorage-based lobbying firm of Robertson, Monagle & Eastaugh to lobby for earmarks for Wasilla. The effort was led by Steven Silver, a former chief of staff for Senator Ted Stevens,[53] and it secured nearly $27 million in funds. The earmarks included $500,000 for a youth shelter, $1.9 million for a transportation hub, $900,000 for sewer repairs, and $15 million for a rail project linking Wasilla and the ski resort community of Girdwood.[54] Earmark requests that Palin requested were criticized by Senator John McCain on three occasions, when she was mayor of Wasilla.[55]

Term limits prevented Palin from running for a third term as mayor in 2002.[56]

Post-mayoral years
In 2002, Palin ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, coming in second to Loren Leman in a five-way Republican primary.[57] The Republican ticket of U.S. Senator Frank Murkowski and Leman won the November 2002 election. When Murkowski resigned from his long-held U.S. Senate seat in December 2002 to become governor, he considered appointing Palin to replace him in the Senate, but instead chose his daughter, Lisa Murkowski, who was then an Alaska state representative.[58]

Governor Murkowski appointed Palin to the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. She chaired the Commission beginning in 2003, and served as Ethics Supervisor.[59] Palin resigned in January 2004, protesting what she called the "lack of ethics" of fellow Republican members.[60][61][62]

After resigning, Palin filed a formal complaint against Oil and Gas Conservation Commissioner Randy Ruedrich, also the chair of the state Republican Party,[63] accusing him of doing work for the party on public time and of working closely with a company he was supposed to be regulating. She also filed a complaint against Gregg Renkes, a former Alaska Attorney General,[64] accusing him of having a financial conflict of interest in negotiating a coal exporting trade agreement,[65] while Renkes was the subject of investigation and after records suggesting a possible conflict of interest had been released to the public.[66] Ruedrich and Renkes both resigned and Ruedrich paid a record $12,000 fine.[59][67]

From 2003 to June 2005, Palin served as one of three directors of "Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.," a 527 group designed to provide political training for Republican women in Alaska.[68] In 2004, Palin told the Anchorage Daily News that she had decided not to run for the U.S. Senate that year, against the Republican incumbent, Lisa Murkowski, because her teenage son opposed it. Palin said "How could I be the team mom if I was a U.S. Senator?"[69]

Governor of Alaska
Main article: Governorship of Sarah Palin

Palin in Kuwait visiting soldiers of the Alaska National Guard, July 24, 2007.In 2006, running on a clean-government platform, Palin defeated incumbent Governor Frank Murkowski in the Republican gubernatorial primary.[70] Her running mate was State Senator Sean Parnell.

Despite spending less than her Democratic opponent, she won the gubernatorial election in November, defeating former governor Tony Knowles 48.3% to 40.9%.[71] Palin became Alaska's first female governor and at age 42, the youngest governor in Alaskan history.[72] She is the state's first governor to have been born after Alaska achieved U.S. statehood, and the first not to be inaugurated in Juneau; she chose to have the ceremony held in Fairbanks instead. She took office on December 4, 2006 and has been very popular with Alaska voters. Polls taken in 2007 early in her term showed her with a 93% and 89% popularity among all voters.[73] A poll taken in September 2008 shows her popularity at 82%.[74][75] Palin declared that top priorities of her administration would be resource development, education and workforce development, public health and safety, and transportation and infrastructure development.[76]

Palin had championed ethics reform throughout her election campaign. Her first legislative action after taking office was to push for a bipartisan ethics reform bill. She signed the resulting legislation in July 2007, calling it a "first step" declaring that she remains determined to clean up Alaska politics.[77]

Lt. Col. David Cogdall helps Palin try out the Engagement Skills Trainer at Camp Buehring, Kuwait, July 24, 2007.Palin has sometimes broken with the state Republican establishment. For example, she endorsed Sean Parnell's bid to unseat the state's longtime at-large U.S. Representative, Don Young.[78] Palin has publicly challenged Senator Ted Stevens to come clean about the ongoing federal investigation into his financial dealings. Shortly before his July 2008 indictment, she held a joint news conference with Stevens, described by The Washington Post as being "to make clear she had not abandoned him politically."[68]

Palin promoted oil and natural gas resource development in Alaska, including in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), where such development has been the subject of a national debate.[79] In March 2007, Palin put forward an Alaska Gasline Inducement Act (AGIA) to encourage building a natural gas pipeline from the state's North Slope.[80] In January 2008, Palin announced that TransCanada Corporation was the sole AGIA-compliant applicant.[81][82] In August 2008, Palin signed a bill awarding TransCanada Pipelines $500 million in seed money and a license to build and operate the $26 billion pipeline to transport gas from the North Slope to the Lower 48 through Canada.[83]

In 2006, Palin obtained a passport[84] and in 2007 traveled for the first time outside of North America on a trip to Kuwait. There she visited the Khabari Alawazem Crossing at the Kuwait–Iraq border and met with members of the Alaska National Guard at several bases.[85] On her return trip to the U.S., she visited injured soldiers in Germany.[86]

Political positions
Main article: Political positions of Joe Biden
A method that political scientists use for gauging ideology is to compare the annual ratings by the Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) with the ratings by the American Conservative Union (ACU).[116] Biden has a lifetime liberal 72 percent score from the ADA through 2004, while the ACU awarded Biden a lifetime conservative rating of 13 percent through 2007.[117] Using another metric, Biden has a lifetime average liberal score of 77.5 percent, according to a National Journal analysis that places him ideologically among the center of Senate Democrats.[118] The Almanac of American Politics rates congressional votes as liberal or conservative on the political spectrum, in three policy areas: economic, social, and foreign. For 2005–2006, Biden's average ratings were as follows: the economic rating was 80 percent liberal and 13 percent conservative, the social rating was 78 percent liberal and 18 percent conservative, and the foreign rating was 71 percent liberal and 25 percent conservative.[119]

Various interest groups have given Biden scores or grades as to how well his votes align with the positions of each group. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) gives him an 86 percent lifetime score, with a 91 percent score for the current session of Congress.[120] Biden received a 91 percent voting record from the National Education Association (NEA) showing a pro-teacher union voting record.[121] Biden opposes drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and supports governmental funding to find new energy sources.[122] Biden believes action must be taken on global warming. He co-sponsored the Sense of the Senate resolution calling on the United States to be a part of the United Nations climate negotiations and the Boxer-Sanders Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act, the most stringent climate bill in the United States Senate.[123] Biden cites high health care and energy costs as two major threats to the prosperity of American businesses, and believes that addressing these issues will improve American economic competitiveness. Biden was given a 100 percent approval rating from AFL-CIO indicating a heavily pro-union voting record. Biden is opposed to the privatization of Social Security and was given an 89 percent approval rating from the Alliance for Retired Americans (ARA), an organization of retired union members.

Possibly charged rape kits to victims, does not believe in evolution, religion is questionable, encourages shooting bears and wolves from lowing flying planes, troopergate, no abortions for rape or incest, supported the bridge to no where before she opposed it. Has a pregnant teenager, her only experiences with Foreign Relations is the fact she can see Russia from AL, Questioned a librarian about book banning and later the librarian was fired. Does not believe in Global Warming, and left her city in debt as Mayor.
Has not submitted her tax returns yet.

Here is a useful resource related to Gov. Sarah Palin - the most comprehensive page of information on her record available on the Net. It includes videos of her saying her proposed $30 billion natural gas pipeline is the “will of God,” her saying a month ago she doesn’t know what the VP of the U.S. does, and her complaining four months ago that Hillary Clinton was whining about “sexist” coverage -

http://dailysource.org/palin

It has in-depth research, audio clips, videos, excerpts and links to hundreds of articles, including many from papers and TV stations in Alaska. It has rare footage, including her telling the 2008 convention of the Alaska Independence Party, whose goal is to give Alaska a vote on seceding from the U.S. to “keep up the good work.”

The level of research is unparalleled. The site’s editors include an Emmy-award winning CNN reporter, the former operating editor of the Christian Science Monitor’s web site, the former head of NPRs News Blog and the Executive Director of the Online News Association. Check it out here -

Were we all united after 9-11, or just scared ?

Setting aside whatever litmus test you might impose on being a real "American", apparently you missed the two elections Bush won, engineered by that corpulent sleaze meister Rove.

Divide the electorate, conquer and pray you get 50.1 percent of the vote, then govern as if you had a mandate.

Where have you been the last seven years. Sitting in a corner hoping for another 9-11 to "unite" the country ?

I'd like to point out to Paul Sr. that I love this country too. Thats why I don't wish to bailout the **** Republicans who took away the regulation to get to this point. No, we are not all Americans these days. Stupidity is in, intelligence is out. More of the same to the point of anarchy. If somehow thats loving your country, boy, are you guys in for a surprise.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding t he fiber of society.

If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America 's.

If your husband is nicknamed 'First Dude', with at least one DUI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA , your family is extremely admirable.

McCain may love the military but he doesn't love those in the military. He has a terrible voting record on veterans' issues and issues affecting active military.

People assume because of his history that he supports veterans. He does not.

"He's voted for veterans funding bills only 30% of the time, according to a scorecard of roll-call votes put out by the nonpartisan Disabled Americans for America."

"Senator McCain clearly needs to be recognized for his military service and in some respects that will play to his advantage, but when it actually comes to delivering health care and benefits during war, Senator McCain's going to have some explaining to do," said Paul Sullivan, director of the nonpartisan Veterans for Common Sense.

palins_nemesis,

Thanks for bringing up the tire inflation facts, I've been explaining this to people myself.

Palin and McCain seem to think saving gas and saving money is some sort of a joke, but my father taught about this many years ago even before I learned to drive, he happened to be in the tire business.

This is information which has been known for decades and I found it particularly telling Palin-McCain would use it as a point to ridicule Obama when in fact he was absolutely correct. They are more interested in potential attack one liners than facts which obviously has a way of eluding them.

Liberals are twisted, unhappy, neurotic little name-callers and egregious violators of taste, decency, and respect. And they prove it on comments pages like this EVERY time. Just take a look. Its pretty obvious that liberalism is a mental dysfunction. Too bad we are so alienated and not "united" we stand like we were after 9/11.....They have hijacked and polarized our culture with their blames games, their hatred of George Bush and anyone conservative or Republican, and their hate-porn in general. And the American people see through the Obama-media hype and the Obamamaniacs worship of the messiah empty suit. And his dark past and felonuous associates. So we'll see who the bipartisan moderate fence-sitters decide should lead our nation for the next 4 years, thats who usually swings these close contests. As a Vietnam Veteran and biker, and loyal, patriotic American, I'm voting for McCain/Palin. You respect that, and I'll respect YOUR choice. Ciao.

geez brock101,

Obama was an 8-year-old child when Ayers and the Weathermen were active, and any attempt to connect Obama with events of almost 40 years ago is ridiculous. Ayers never killed anyone in the bomb, except accidently, a member of his own group. Ayers is now a professor at University of Illinois at Chicago. Obama was a law professor at U Chicago. They mingled in the intellectual crowd. The Democratic nominee for vice president, Senator Biden of Delaware, is denouncing a television advertisement released by the campaign he is running along with Senator Obama of Illinois.
During an interview with CBS yesterday, Mr. Biden disowned an Obama-Biden ad that suggested the Republican nominee, Senator McCain, was out of touch because he does not use a computer.
"I thought that was terrible," Mr. Biden told news anchor Katie Couric after she made reference to the ad while asking about the tone of the campaign. After the ad was released, several of Mr. McCain's allies pointed to press reports saying he cannot type because of injuries he incurred while a prisoner during the Vietnam War.
"I didn't know we did it and if I had anything to do with it, we would have never done it," the vice presidential nominee said. When Ms. Couric asked if Mr. Obama approved it, as stated in the ad, Mr. Biden did not respond directly.

In order to get the support of the conservative wing of the Republican party McCain had to select Sarah Palin as VP. If elected, McCain will have to pay his debt to the conservative wing in full -- in politics you can't bite the hand that feeds you. This means four more years of Republican ideology if McCain is elected. This means four more years of huge Republican tax breaks for the wealthy and well-heeled. This means four more years of paltry tax checks for the rest of us. Isn't the economy in enough ruin? Haven't we fought enough useless wars for the oil barons? Can't we get it? Vote for Obama on Nov 4.

Senator Mc Cain does not demonstrate the command of issues that I thought he would. His years in the Senate did not provide me with the in depth exposure that this long campaign has. I was surprised with his inability to articulate thoughtful positions on major issues. I now do not see that he is a superior alternative to Obama.
The likely smartest candidates did not survive the process or did not throw their hats in the ring.

Sarah Palin is nothing more than a prop and not worthy of the position of VP. She may have voter appeal, but I don't hire people or vote for people based on how they look. It's competency, knowledge and experience and oh yeah common sense.

Today's remarks that you don't raise tax's in a down economy was the last straw for me and I would have expected the rest of the sentence that spending needs to be reduced, but that I guess was a bridge too far.

Sorry Senator Mc Cain, but I judge you not the Maverick that you pretend to be, but just another politician who cares more about getting elected than governing.

How many others do this? Usually shake hands or very quick, man to man hug.
I BET CINDY is furious..could easily dump that dirty ole man. Palin does it because she knows "it works". So far,, she has been quite good at her little speeches and good at putting others down to build herself up. McCain has learned all these dirty little snipes also that he did not do back in 2000. The only thing that qualifies anybody to be President is 272 electoral college votes. George Bush was an alcoholic whose Daddy's friends set him up with everything, then put Cheney in as Vice President for adult supervision. What qualified Bush? The US Supreme Court. Obama is going to be the first great President of the 21st Century. Believe it.

McCain campaign lies....while whining about being called liars

"Sen. John McCain’s top campaign aides convened a conference call today to complain of being called "liars." They pressed the media to scrutinize specific elements of Sen. Barack Obama’s record."

"But the call was so rife with simple, often inexplicable misstatements of fact that it may have had the opposite effect: to deepen the perception, dangerous to McCain, that he and his aides have little regard for factual accuracy."

"The errors in McCain strategist Steve Schmidt’s charges against Obama and Sen. Joe Biden were particularly notable because they seemed unnecessary. Schmidt repeatedly gilded the lily: He exaggerated the Biden family's already problematic ties to the credit card industry; Obama’s embarrassing relationship with a 1960s radical; and an Obama supporter’s over-the-top attack on Sarah Palin when — in each case — the truth would have been damaging enough."

"Any time the Obama campaign is criticized at any level, the critics are immediately derided as liars," Schmidt told reporters.

But as he went on to list a series of stories he thought reporters should be writing about Obama and Biden, in almost every instance he got the details wrong."

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13747.html

Read the piece for the details, but when the Politico's Ben Smith asked the McCain campaign for evidence for their assertions, this is the response he got:

Asked about the series of errors, McCain aides could not provide evidence to back up Schmidt’s assertions.

One McCain aide, Michael Goldfarb, said Politico was "quibbling with ridiculously small details when the basic things are completely right."

Another, Brian Rogers, responded more directly:

"You are in the tank," he e-mailed

I was at the media rally. WHAT A JOKE!!! All they chant is 'USA USA USA' Hello - we get it! if we say 'Obama' and you say "USA" what does that mean? That Obama and his supporters are 'anti'-USA? GIVE ME A BREAK!! What kind of question is: "How many people out there love their country and the military?"

I felt sick to my stomach - of course all Americans love this great country and are v. thankful to our military. McCain, though, apparently doesn't think our troops are important enough to get a college education, as he voted AGAINST it in the GI BILL!! IT is time McCain and Palin STOP using patriotism and militarism to bolster their polls. CHEAP. Palin using her son's service is CHEAP.

I am also a student in a nearby college. I am sad i went to the rally today. SUCH A WASTE. Mccain and Palin did not say anything substantive at all. They were all about listing all the problem in this country (problems we inheretid while McCain has been in Congress for 24 years!!! Where was MCCAIN?? Where was the republican leadership for the las t EIGHT years???)

McCain and Palin had no solutions. Just empty rhetoric and promises lost in the chants of USA USA USA. I hope all who vote for this incompetent, losing team - McFailin- will be proud to Chant USA USA USA when our country burns in wasr and chaos anf our bridges collapse and our children fall in to a spiral of hate-venom and ignorance, which will surely befall upon us if REPUBLICANS are given four more years.

PS The stock market plunged another 327 points today, Lehman just agreed to be sold to Japanese titan Nomura, dollar value plunged, oil soared, unemployment rose to 6.1%, and McCain is oblivious. Palin has no answers, she just likes to point fingers and call herself a hockey mom. McCain thinks the solution is to 'fire Cox' whoopdeedo o yeah, thanks! Oh and don't forget the "fundamentals are strong!" this chaotic market is "all psychological" America, you are dreaming - lost your job? DREAM! Can't afford gas AND food AND rent AND clothing for your kids? DREAM! Sarah Palin and the Death of Cheese

Genuine talent is no longer necessary to achieve acclaim. Just good looks and a good publicist. Ambition, which formerly needed to be framed by legitimate qualifications, became a talent in-and-of itself.

This death of cheese has so permeated the culture that no sector is left untainted. The genius of Karl Rove was in recognizing this cultural shift and exploiting it in politics to advance the extreme right-wing agenda of his boss George W. Bush. Of course, the agenda wasn’t really Bush’s. He, we all know now, barely has a thought in head. But he was the imperfect vehicle (rhetorically challenged, incurious, arrogant, though secretly insecure) which Rove utilized in this time to ensure that the ambition of the GOP was fulfilled. Bush won two terms. The first, barely, because he was someone you wanted to have a beer with. The second because 9/11 scrambled the brains of Americans.

I, like many of you, have always held a deep suspicion that this cultural change portended bad things for America and the world. I’ve watched as Americans have become stupider, more manipulatable, less interested in the world around them. They are all too busy dancing in the mirror.

And now, with Sarah Palin, my fears have been justified. She is the Reality TV/American Idol candidate for the most powerful office in the world. Without legitimate qualifications and the necessary interest and judgment to hold the office she seeks, she has risen like a phoenix to become an uber-celebrity and, somehow, beyond all logic and reason, a genuine possibility to be president of the United States.

Cheese thy name is Sarah.

This is what we always feared. The great democratization of society has put intelligence on the same level as stupidity. Education on the same level as ignorance. Character on the same level as good looks. Judgment on the same level as “gut” reaction.

Nothing is cheesy anymore. And, as a result, what finally happens when a society abandons it’s standards is that Sarah Palin can have her manicured finger on the button.

I want my cheese back.
