Lessons From Indiana and Minnesota

By Dan Balz

What's the matter with Indiana and Minnesota?

In the past four presidential elections, Minnesota has been one of the top 20 Democratic-performing states in the country. During that same period, Indiana has been in the top 15 Republican states.

But if you look at current state-by-state polling, John McCain and Barack Obama are running competitive races in both of those states. One of those states is out of sync with the country and its own history. But which one?

I don't propose to answer the question 42 days short of Election Day, but I raise it only to suggest that the flurry of state polls now descending on everyone be looked at with some sense of history.

The electoral map can change. It can change globally with a landslide election, as it did from 1968 to 1972 or between 1976 and 1984. Even in years of close elections, some states can switch from red to blue or blue to red, as was the case between 2000 and 2004.

But there is still an underlying structure of the state of the states -- a rough order of how states perform versus one another -- and right now some things don't quite add up.

Take Indiana. Is there any question that it is a solid red state? Four years ago, President Bush won the Hoosier state with 60 percent of the vote. Eight years ago he won with 57 percent. The state hasn't voted for a Democrat for president since 1964. Even when Bill Clinton was winning two consecutive elections, Indiana remained in the top 13 GOP-performing states.

Yet the charts on pollster.com list five polls of Indiana taken in the past 10 days. Four show McCain leading, one shows Obama ahead. The biggest lead for either candidate is a poll that showed McCain at 51 percent, Obama at 45 percent. The average of the five gives McCain a lead of three percentage points.

Assume all that is roughly accurate. Then how do you explain Minnesota? Certainly Minnesota has moved from solidly Democratic to competitive over the past few elections, but it has not voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 1972. Even in the Reagan landslide of 1984, Minnesota stayed loyal to home-state Democratic nominee Walter Mondale.

Seven polls of Minnesota have been released in September. Obama "leads" in six (several of those leads are well within the margin of error, including the newest Quinnipiac University survey for washingpost.com and the Wall Street Journal poll) while the seventh has Obama and McCain tied. The current average shows Obama leading by three percentage points.

So put the two states up against one another and there is a six-point gap between them: Indiana plus three for McCain and Minnesota plus three for Obama. In 2004, Indiana was plus 30 for Bush and Minnesota was plus three for John Kerry. In 1996, Indiana was just plus five for Bob Dole, but Minnesota was plus 16 for Clinton.

The narrowest gap between the states in the past four elections came in 1992, when Indiana was plus five for George H.W. Bush and Minnesota was plus four for Clinton -- but those results are skewed by the strong showing in both states by Ross Perot, when he won 24 percent in Minnesota and 20 percent in Indiana.

Think of it another way. If Indiana is competitive, why is Ohio still competitive? If Obama is doing so well in Indiana, shouldn't he be doing better in Ohio. The Buckeye state has voted Republican the past two elections, but went Democratic in 1992 and 1996. But in all cases, the margin of victory was no more than six points.

Over those four elections, the Republican vote in Ohio averaged about a point better than the GOP's national number. The Democratic vote in Ohio was about two points below the national Democratic average. If Indiana is tight, shouldn't Obama be doing better in neighboring Ohio?

One could argue that there are reasons Indiana is an anomaly. The Chicago media market spills into northwest Indiana, so Obama is a more familiar figure there than in the Buckeye state. Obama did better in Indiana than in Ohio during the primaries, losing badly to Hillary Clinton in Ohio but only narrowly in Indiana, so there must be greater built-in resistance to him in Ohio.

But Obama did even better in Wisconsin in the primaries than he did in Ohio or Indiana, clobbering Clinton. Wisconsin, like Indiana, borders Illinois. Yet this fall, Wisconsin is only slightly more pro-Obama in recent polls than is Minnesota. Experts still give Obama a clear advantage in Wisconsin, despite the fact that it has been one of the closest states in the past two elections.

There are other examples dotted around the map that raise questions about what is happening this year. Virginia is performing more Democratic than national polls would suggest it should be, unless Obama is opening up a big lead nationally. North Carolina remains more competitive than a close national race should allow, although Obama's efforts to produce a huge black vote may be at work there.

Of eight polls in Florida the past 10 days, three show the race literally tied, one puts Obama ahead by the margin of error, two put McCain ahead within the margin of error and two show McCain leading.

Florida is a state that some thought was trending away from the Democrats but that over the past four elections has performed very close to the national numbers for both nominees. If Obama or McCain opens up a real lead nationally, Florida very well could end up in the same place. If it's close nationally, give McCain the advantage.

One McCain adviser said recently that for all the oddities of the electoral map during the past couple of months, for all the talk about a new map emerging in this election, the underlying structure of the states was still powerful enough that, in the end, there may not be that many surprises -- unless one candidate gets a big victory, in which case the whole map will look different than it has the past two elections.

Watching these state polls is great sport and sometimes instructive. But it's helpful to recall how these states have performed in past elections and where they fit into national patterns. If Indiana and Minnesota are still both competitive a month from now, then we'll really be looking at something unusual.

Wow, I can't believe McCain, this man is the most cynical and craven politician i have seem in my 40 yrs. This latest move, like picking gump Palin, is so calculated, its insulting. Clearly, McCain is trying desperately to save his campaign!! Are you serious that everyone doesn't see this as a bald faced attempt to slow Obama's big Mo! You gotta be kidding me right.
Can anyone tell me why this election is so close again. You and I both know why McCain(the weakest link) is still in this. Grow up America, you have been virtually beat up for the past 8 years from the Bush incompentence and yet you are oblivious and want the same for 4 more years!!
This is incredible on so many levels. We all know why this race is still close. Admit it.

Obama is clearly the best thing since JFK, RFK and WJC. Why, America can't we see that. What a shame!!! I honestly grieve for my country if you elect McCain and Palin.

I think voters estimate good campaign organization and effective ground efforts when they see it. Because it says somebody about the canditate and his staff. I think this appreciation will be stronger then underlying structure of the states.

So, is Obama/Biden for clean coal in the US or not?One needs to tell the other what they are doing. Looks like two dolts wondering adrift in "energy policy" to me. And to think Biden told Rice that Rumsfeld was an idiot. Ha ha. That is the pot calling the kettle black.

If we do get Obama as president, we will get exactly what we deserve. He will have no choice but to raise taxes with Pulosi in power spending like she's at Tiffany's. With all his give aways, he will again raise taxes to "pay" for his paybacks to the freeloaders of society. Just keep in mind, the more we invest in no productivity, we will get more of it.

as a observer from overseas - and having worked and visited the US numerous times I am going to say what some of you say - but most avoid - or claim that your country is to mature or whatever for that to be a factor these days.

This election when you cut the headline rubbish is about race - of course the Repubs will say it isnt trying to be divisive as they try and be politically correct - but it is at the voter syupporter level - the world knows it and we are watching to see if the USA after 8 years of the worst Government for ages in all areas - reflected in the US economic debacle which has hit the rest of the world - is a class and race election..of course class is being used for votes (down to earth gun toting evangalistical MILF as the draw card) - and race is being used not to vote for a certain party...

So we are watching to see if the underlying ignoranct - bigoted- racist place the USA majority is and has fooled itself into "not" seeing shows its true colours.

ALSO are you mature enough to oust your demons - and sheer incompetancy - or stay in your segregated camps...apart from that we are also seeing if you want leaders that set a example to the world or point guns and threats and fears at them....we want leadership not a Jerry Spinger/jackass/WWE/ Judge Judy/FOX news inspired so called world leader...and world

But I put the polls wether you admit it or not down to a number of factors of cause but a bigone is racism - as when I talk to any republicans about why they would vote this lot of idiots back in they have nothing to say - and seem to be dancing around saying the R word...in factI say to them if you really care for America vote your own party out - so it can clean up its act - have a cull - get rid of the crap (like wall street should and is doing ) - you know refresh - clean out the bush years and come back stronger and re energized (something Mc Cain cannot do - and okay Palin has done ina very short term redneck MILF way) and if the Dems are as risky as you all keep saying they will stuff up in these dire times and you are back in 4-5 years.. let this rubbish continue and have jug heads like Mc cain and Palin in you may get 4-5 years more but then I think you will be out for 20 years as the incompetance and stupidty continues kills any future electorial chances after this thrid time lucky election - unless of course you start a world war - nationalise your economy - and have token elections - all three factors in play now by the Republicans and the last 8 years.....reminds me of those 40's Totalitarian Neocons Joseph and Adolf...

you guys sure are breaking the rest of us up with this black comedy....this election I think the rest of the world see's as a quasi national IQ test....goodluck it should be easy - the answers are optional and down to two....or is that beyond your IQs hence only about 25-30% of you actually bother voting...

go on reveal your true selves - racist and stupid - or look to move forward and become the USA we all love and respect...and in the words of the famous Franklin (not Ben) maybe should start with "Respect yourself"

I think Tip O'Neal's "all politics is local" motto matters. For instance, back in 2006 Indiana's state legislature and governor leased the state turnpike to an firm with Austrailian and Spanish roots.

To even people with zero sense of economics, this sure sounds like a Ponzi scheme where the private entity will keep charging tolls for 15 to 20 years, every once in a while putting an inch of cheap asphalt on top, making money for the owners, and then when all the major repairs to bridges and subsurface base concrete are needed they'll file for bankruptcy leaving taxpayers to pay for the repairs. The current Wall Street finance debacle makes the Indiana public smell a rat even more.

Theres only one explanation for why mcccain would be ahead in any state which is that those folks are not hurting from this economic crisis as much as those in the states where Obama is ahead because no intelligent person would vote for more of the same as these last 8 yrs of a republican President that is unless race is the reason and if that is the case then those that are racist are willing to bite off their noses to spite their faces and if mcccain should win they will get exactly what they deserve.Obama/Biden08

I think one reason the polls are (apparently) all over the place is that this election is so outside the norm that neither pollsters nor pundits are able to understand it fully. I don;t see this as another 2000-2004 "down to the last state" election.

I don't think the result is going to be close at all - Obama with 300+ electoral votes.

It would certainly be nice to know how people would vote if they really had a chance to know who Palin is. She continually is shielded from the press, refuses to help in the Alaskan investigation. What is the McCain campaign trying to hide? This is someone running for VP, potentially the presidency, and the campaign didn't vet her, nor do they want the public to vet her.

McCain's morals challenge belief of Christians husbands and fathers. He left his first wife Carol in her 40s for a young rich girl Cindy in her 20s. Carol finished raising their 3 children alone while McCain ran for Congress with Cindy's daddy's money.

McCain committed adultery with Cindy for months before his wife granted him a divorce. He then married Cindy within 6 weeks. What kind of responsible father and husband does this to his wife and children.

In my church, this type of life disqualifies you for leadership because you've proved that you can't lead your own family.

McCain... A man who slept his way up... Don't let him get to the top.

Change is coming to Washington... especially if there are prettier, younger, richer women for him to change to.

Hey Folks. If you want to get the best analysis of the polles, go to the Pro, Nate, at http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/ Dan Baltz is a total amateur.

One of Nate's observations is that the polls pretty much got it right in the North during the primaries but significantly under counted Obama's numbers in the South. Sort of a reverse Bradley effect. If that's true, Obama has a real shot in NC as long as the current polls have him within about two points of McCain's numbers, Obama will win NC. The same can be said for Florida.

Add to that the cell phone effect and he is also doing better than some of the polls would suggest. Some pollsters include cell phones in their surveys and others don't. Nate has done an analysis and concluded that failure to include cell phones in the sample creates an average undercount of Obama support by 2.2 percent. Adjusting all the non-cell polls to account for the cell phone bias also increases Obama's win percentage in a number of the battleground States.

Look out conservatives; Obama is going to win in a landslide! Get ready for the Change that we can believe in.

~ Let's be serious, the narrow majority of American's voted for Bush in 2000, and again in 2004. ~

That's incorrect. The narrow majority of Americans voted for Al Gore in 2000 and when the FL recount was finally finished a year later, by a team of independent journalists, it turned out he'd actually won the state of Florida as well. George W. Bush was not elected the president of the U.S. in 2000 by either popular or electoral vote.

I hope Americans will finally come to their senses, push aside their lingering prejudices and finally put into office the only man among the candidates who gives a damn about the middle class.

McCain and Bush cut from the same cloth

Bush miserable high school grades
McCain the same

Bush admitted to Ivy League School (Yale double legacy)
McCain admitted to Naval Academy (Father and granddad Admirals)

Bush poor performance in undergrad
McCain 845th out of 850 in Naval Academy

Bush admitted to Harvard Business school with questionable GPA
McCain admitted to flight school after poor Academy performance (spots reserved for top of class with best recomendations)

Bush graduates and fails at every business he tried (most financed by father)
McCain crashes 5 jets at our expense and finally gets shot down and captured

Bush becomes President and arguably is the worst in History
Hopefully America has learned not to vote for the loser because he's white or belongs to the right party so McCain will crash and go back to the Senate where his damage to the country can be mitigated.

I wish that our elected officials could come together as a united American party. It's really disheartening to see how state's are polarized as either Red or Blue. Why can't we work together to get ourselves out of this we got ourselves into? Let's be serious, the narrow majority of American's voted for Bush in 2000, and again in 2004. I truly hope that over generations American's can see past these conditioned thoughts we have regarding our two major political parties, and do what's best for this nation as a whole. Until we as a nation can evolve, we will continue to waste millions upon millions of donation dollars on trying to "sell" the best candidate for commander and chief. God Bless

A word about the polls in Minnesota: Only one poll has shown the race tied in Minnesota and that's the Star-Tribune poll.

And it's interesting that anytime a poll shows McCain in a dead heat with Obama, the Star-Tribune gives that poll full bore coverage. (Last Sunday's front page.) But when a poll show Obama with a lead outside the margin of area (today's Rasmussen poll) the poll gets buried on the inside pages.
Does anyone else see the hand of current Trib political news editor and former conservative columnist Doug Tice in this?

In any event, I don't think the race in Minnesota will be that close. Obama will win by 5 to 8 points- and possibly more. I base this prediction on historical voting patterns, the record turnout this year in the DFL caucuses and the Wellstone-like enthusiasm on the ground for Obama- especially among 20 somethings. I don't think all of this latter group is being picked up in the polling.

Balz is right to pay attention to Minnesota however. In 2000, the shift in the last few days to Gore in Minnesota polls was indicative of the shift that took place to Gore nationwide. Many pollsters didn't catch this shift.

The nastiness of the Coleman/Franken race is turning off a lot of voters and spilling over into the general election. The senate race is virtually neck-and-neck.

You say that Kerry won MN by 3 points and current pollster avg gives Obama a lead of 3 points. So Obama is not underperforming in MN and hugely overperforming in Indiana. I understand you want to give a veneer of "fair and balanced" flavor to your post, but facts are stubborn.

Posted by: Expression to Vote | September 23, 2008 6:05 PM | Report abuse

This is just silliness, Dan. In 2000, Gore beat Bush in Minnesota 48% to 46%--a 2 point margin. In 2004, Kerry beat Bush in Minnesota 51% to 48%---a 3 point margin. In your average of polls for Minnesota, Obama leads McCain in Minnesota by a 3 point margin---the same margin by which Kerry beat Bush and a little better than the margin by which Gore beat Bush. Hmmm . . . maybe it's just a closely divided state?

Let's see. Minnesota currently has one Democratic Senator and one Republican Senator. The Republican is up for reelection and according to most polls is in a dead heat with his Democratic challenger. The state has a Republican Governor who was just reelected two years ago by an extremely narrow margin. Maybe Obama's not doing better in Minnesota because . . . there are a lot of Republicans in Minnesota, almost (but not quite) as many Republicans as Democrats?

There's absolutely nothing "the matter" here.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 23, 2008 6:04 PM | Report abuse

Obama will win the industrial state of Wisconsin. Democrats always win the progressive industrial, finance and technological states. (Great Lakes, Northeast, West).

Those two electoral map changes that you're talking about in '72 and '84 were when Nixon and Reagan were running a second term after a fabolous first term. That's not the situation now.

McCain will win Indiana. Republicans always win the religious state (unless is a "favorite son" southerner democrat running like Clinton and Carter). That's not the case now either.

The only poll that matters is on November 4. The hate coming from the liberal "party of tolerance" is amazing. And I see quite a few posts from Obama operatives. The Obamites think that calling someone stupid or some other personal attack helps them. These are tactics used by someone who has lost the rational and logical debate. At that point they resort to acting like a petulant child. Criticizing the candidates or thier positions is fine, but attacking the person or people you are trying to convince to vote your way makes you a bully.

... if he doesn't perform well, don't expect a big swing for McCain (unless McCain really trounces Obama). Instead, the contest will remain close.

In other words, it's not McCain the at home audience will be judging in the debates; it's Obama.

What appears to be a conumdrum is really easily explainable. Palin has excited the Reagan Democrats and the Republican base in Minnesota. In Indiana, many blacks are excited by Obama and will vote in much larger percentages than in previous elections. Consequently, to look at historical voting patterns in States that have been Red or Blue is not a reliable forcast of what will happen now. You have two historical events (a black running for President and a charasmatic woman running for Vice President.) My sense is that this election will turn on who will turn out a higher percentage of their supporters in the battleground States.

Hmmm, let's see. We have a bunch of republicans whining about wanting these CEOs to keep their fortunes, multiple houses and cars, and they want the taxpayers to bail them out. But when the taxpayer wanted help to keep THEIR homes, they were called a bunch of whiners by these SAME republicans and were given NO bailout.

Why are their oversized fortunes more important than the rest of America's modest and undersized ones?

Now, for the last time, once and for all, explain to me how Obama is the elitist and the republicans are "just like you and me." Go ahead. I triple dog dare you.

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET SUPERCAPITALISM AT ITS WORST

Executive salaries, CEO bonuses, grand robberies of the U.S. TREASURY in the $MILLIONS, $BILLIONS, and $TRILLIONS.

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET SUPERCAPITALISTS robbed the AMERICAN PEOPLE of a $Trillion. RULE OF LAW states that the AMERICAN PEOPLE will be protected and all private properties, money, and wealth domestic and abroad owned by GOP REPUBLICAN SUPERCAPITALISTS taking part in robbing the U.S. TREASURY (AMERICAN PEOPLE) will immediately be confiscated and returned to the U.S. TREASURY (AMERICAN PEOPLE).

REPLACE GOP REPUBLICAN CEO GOLDEN PARACHUTES WITH CRIMINAL TRIAL AND PROPERTY CONFISCATION. THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WILL PREVAIL AND THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION WILL BE REINSTATED. LONG LIVE FREEDOM AND JUSTICE. CORPORATE TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY WILL BE THE LAW OF THE LAND.

INSIDE JOB AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL:
GOP REPUBLICAN WHITE HOUSE ILLEGAL WARS AND
WALL STREET CRIMINAL DEREGULATED SPECULATIONS

You asked for it and you got it. GOP REPUBLICANS INSIDERS McCain, Bush, Cheney, Paulson, and Rice were hired by Super-Capitalists (Super Wealthy GOP REPUBLICANS) to start Illegal Oil Wars against Oil producing Nations and DEREGULATE (eliminate AMERICAN PEOPLE PROTECTION) the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT (White House, Congress, Supreme Court), TREASURY and WALL STREET. These INSIDERS did exactly what they were paid to do. Past GOP REPUBLICANS (Nixon, Reagan, Bush I) and current GOP REPUBLICANS (Bush II, Cheney, Rice, McCain, Paulson) have a credibility factor of zero. Americans no longer believe them, the World has never believed them and now they are done. They came in with the 9/11 attack upon the AMERICAN PEOPLE and leave with the Wall Street $1Trillion attack upon the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Wave after wave after wave the GOP REPUBLICANS attack the AMERICAN PEOPLE based on the premise of disrespect for anyone who is not a GOP RICH REPUBLICAN. Either you are in their group (GOP RICH REPUBLICAN) or out (debt ridden worker bee / victim). GOP REPUBLICANS view the AMERICAN PEOPLE as gullible sheep perpetually fattened with debt and led to the subhuman existence slaughter. When slavery (free labor) ended GOP RICH REPUBLICANS attacked and enslaved the people of the world through unbalanced trade. Now that foreign sweatshops are demanding better pay and treatment, GOP RICH REPUBLICANS are attacking the AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS. GOP RICH REPUBLICANS are banking on the idea that the AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS are non-thinking drones fat with artificial food, high on Wall Street sponsored imported drugs (legal / illegal), and choked with clutter, debt and noise.

Through massive GOP REPUBLICAN SPONSORED DEREGULATIONS, GOP REPUBLICAN CEOs, Treasury Secretary, Wall Street Speculators, White House Administration, Cabinet Members, and their insider friends each walked away with more than $20,000,000 annually of money stolen directly from the U.S. TREASURY (AMERICAN PEOPLE). After eight years of GRAND FRAUD AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL, thousands of GOP REPUBLICANS ROBBED OUR UNITED STATES TREASURY OF $1TRILLION (ACTS OF TREASON AGAINST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE).

The AMERICAN PEOPLE will hold ALL GOP REPUBLICANS INVOLVED in these ACTS OF TREASON accountable before a TRIAL. ALL GOP REPUBLICANS INVOLVED in these ACTS OF TREASON will have ALL OF THEIR PROPERTIES (corporate and private, domestic and foreign sheltered) CONFISCATED, SOLD and RETURNED to OUR NATIONAL TREASURY (AMERICAN PEOPLE). The UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION (WILL OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE) shall prevail, despite the criminal efforts of GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET SUPER-CAPITALIST CRIMINALS.

CONGRESS WILL NOT ADJOURN UNTIL AFTER THE GOP REPUBLICAN PARTY FIX THEIR COLOSSAL MESS

GOP REPUBLICAN JOHN MCCAIN WALL STREET DEREGULATIONS
GOP REPUBLICAN JOHN MCCAIN ALSO WANTED TO PRIVATIZE SOCIAL SECURITY (BONEHEAD)
GOP REPUBLICAN JOHN MCCAIN sponsored landmark legislation in 1999 that removed the walls between banks, investment firms and insurance companies. GOP REPUBLICAN JOHN MCCAIN bill allowed a company like AIG to expand beyond its traditional insurance business (which is still profitable) into exotic new extremely high risk products that brought the company down and created this colossal mess.

WALL STREET SRO - SELF REGULATORY ORGANIZATION
THE GOP REPUBLICAN RUN Government (GOP President, GOP Congress, GOP Supreme Court) looked the other way, while GOP REPUBLICAN Super-capitalist Obscenely Rich WALL STREET SRO Speculators Robbed Our U.S. TREASURY and Forced the $Trillion Debt Upon the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Average Americans are becoming poorer, because GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET super rich SPECULATORS and corporate CEOs are paying themselves, business partners, friends, and family members at least $10,000,000 annually from MONEY STOLEN FROM THE U.S. TREASURY. These major crimes committed by WALL STREET SPECULATORS AND CEOs have gone beyond greed and into acts of treason against the AMERICAN PEOPLE. Seize the stolen money and properties valued in the $TRILLIONS back from these super criminals for attacking America. Those stolen $MILLIONS / $BILLIONS / $TRILLIONS belong to the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

RULE OF LAW states that the People of the United States will be defended. Those who attack American Citizens will be prosecuted. WALL STREET SPECULATORS and CORPORATE CEOs dictatorship over the AMERICAN PEOPLE is over. Average Americans are not going to accept WALL STREET CORPORATE CRIMES anymore. Rights of Citizen and Average Workers of the United States will be enforced. The AMERICAN PEOPLE will always come before corporate interests, because Americans Love America more than Wall Street Speculators love greed.

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET $TRILLION FRAUD AGAINST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

Direct impact of GOP McCain sponsored deregulations
Bankrupt and floundering
Failure of the investment bank
Government's takeover

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET's business model has collapsed

Greed and fear routinely govern GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET financial markets and GLOBAL CRISIS.

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET (giant investment houses, brokerage firms, hedge funds, "private equity" firms) irresponsibly TRADED the savings of average Americans (placed LAS VEGAS STYLE BETS on extremely high risk stocks, bonds, and other securities).

DUBIOUS MORTGAGES were PACKAGED into BONDS and SOLD and TRADED. Investment houses had huge incentives to increase LEVERAGE (OBSCENELY HIGH BORROWING).

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET compensation is heavily skewed toward annual bonuses, reflecting the profits traders and managers earned in the tune of lavish base salaries and obscenely high annual bonuses of $20,000,000.

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET relies heavily on OBSCENELY HIGH LEVERAGE (OBSCENELY HIGH BORROWING). $3 Trillion (stocks, bonds, other securities) backed by only $80 billion in shareholders' equity while the $2.8 Trillion was LEVERAGE (BORROWED).

Leverage (huge borrowing) can create huge debts (huge principal and interest obligations)

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET is a manic machine for gambling.
Traders and money managers are given huge incentives to do whatever would increase short-term profits.

For decades, GOP REPUBLICAN JOHN MCCAIN sponsored legislation that broadly deregulated WALL STREET banking and insurance industries.

GOP REPUBLICAN JOHN MCCAIN swept away Consumer Protection legislation and opened the way for a less restricted high risk financial marketplace.

While the GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET boom continued, government (White House, Congress, Supreme Court) looked the other way.

GOP REPUBLICAN Congress resisted tougher regulation and permitted WALL STREET to run out of control at obscenely high LEVERAGE (OBSCENELY HIGH BORROWED MONEY) RATIOS perpetrating intentional fraud against the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET leaders intentionally deceived customers and lenders into taking hazardous risks for short-term rewards regardless of the long-term dangers to the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Mortgages went bad. The powerful high leverage went into reverse. Losses eroded firms' capital bases and raised doubts about their survival.

Financial firms took major stupid and wasteful risks that severely damaged the American Economy and impeded economic recovery.

GOP REPUBLICAN STOCK MARKET $TRILLION FRAUD has deepened consumers' pessimism, fear and reluctance to spend. There may be more failures of FINANCIAL FIRMS.

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET financial crises resemble the GOP REPUBLICAN illegal miscalculated war.

How were we ever made to believe that the now-collapsing GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET model ever made sense? Common sense should have told us that making RISKY BETS with HUGE AMOUNTS of BORROWED MONEY was a DANGEROUS GAME; if the bets pay off you make money beyond your wildest dreams, but if they go bad you face utter ruin.

Common sense should have told us that betting fortunes on meaningless fluctuations in stock, bond or currency values (McCain sponsored deregulated hedge funds) was about as productive as a trip to Las Vegas. Common sense should have told us that buying and selling exotic securities based on other securities based on bundles of mortgages that were treated like mere numbers on a balance sheet (no recognition that the whole iffy construct was based on real people living in real houses that they might or might not be able to afford) was not an intelligent endeavor.

Somehow, we all forgot that "HIGHLY LEVERAGED" is just another way of saying "DEEPLY INDEBTED." Now we've had a wake-up call, and maybe the erstwhile Masters of the Universe will have to stop playing with imaginary money and go back to using the real stuff.

Gov. Sarah Palin returned home to 2,000 protesters outside the Anchorage library who wanted to correct the widespread impression that the Last Frontier endorses her candidacy.

"Last week a group of women were sitting around talking about this perception that all of Alaska supports Sarah Palin. We apparently hit a nerve and started a movement,"

A sense of festival obtained. There was a woman in a polar bear suit representing "Polar Bear Moms Say: No Palin Failin." Drivers on 36th Avenue saw a little girl waving a sign "Don't Ban My Books."

"My mom is from Alaska. She's a working mother. She's good looking," said Nolan. "So she seems to be qualified to be vice president."

PRESIDENTIAL AND VICE PRESIDENTIAL CHOICES

I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight.....

If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're 'exotic, different.'

Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, and its a quintessential American story.

If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.

If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer,
become President of the Harvard Law Review,
create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters,
spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor,
spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people,
become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee,
spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13
million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign
Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees,
you don't have any real leadership experience.

If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years
on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less
than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000
people, and cook caribou/grizzly/wolf stew, then you're qualified to become the country's second
highest ranking executive.

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters,
all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress,
and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month,
you're a Christian.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including
the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only,
with no other option in sex education in your state's school system
while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you're very responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm
to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family,
your family's values don't represent America's.

If you're husband is nicknamed 'First Dude', with at least one DWI conviction
and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and
once was a member of a group that advocated: the secession of Alaska from the USA,
your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.

BRITISH PRIME MINISTER BROWN SUPPORTS BARACK OBAMA

LONDON - BRITISH PRIME MINISTER GORDON BROWN voiced support for UNITED STATES DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BARACK OBAMA, saying he would help Americans struggling with an economic downturn.

In a move seen by some British media as a break with a political convention requiring foreign leaders to remain neutral ahead of US elections, BRITISH PRIME MINISTER BROWN praised MR. OBAMA as a fellow “progressive politician” who would help ordinary Americans in tough times. With eight weeks to go before the presidential election, MR. OBAMA and his Republican rival John McCain are neck-and-neck in domestic opinion polls.

BRITISH PRIME MINISTER BROWN described the race for the White House as “electrifying” and said: “It is the DEMOCRATS who are generating the ideas to help people through more difficult times.”

“To help prevent people from losing their home, BARACK OBAMA has proposed a Foreclosure Prevention Fund to increase emergency pre-foreclosure counselling, and help families facing repossession,” he wrote in an article in The Monitor magazine, a monthly political publication.

REPORT SAYS GOP REPUBLICAN OIL AGENCY RAN AMOK

INVESTIGATION OF GOP REPUBLICAN OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET

INVESTIGATION OF GOP REPUBLICAN MINERALS MANAGEMENT SERVICE OIL MARKETING GROUP

GOP REPUBLICAN Government officials in charge of collecting BILLIONS of dollars worth of royalties from OIL and gas companies accepted gifts, steered contracts to favored clients and engaged in drug use and illicit sex with employees of the energy firms, federal investigators reported.

Investigators from the Interior Department's inspector general's office said more than a dozen employees, including the former director of the OIL royalty program, took meals, ski trips, sports tickets and golf outings from industry representatives. The report alleges that the former director, also netted more than $30,000 from improper outside work.

The report from Inspector General contains fresh allegations about the practices at the beleaguered royalty-in-kind program of Interior's Minerals Management Service, which last year collected more than $4 billion worth of OIL and natural gas from companies given contracts to tap energy on federal and Indian lands and offshore. The revelations come as Congress is set to consider opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and areas off the coast of Florida for drilling.

The royalty-in-kind program, based near Denver, allows energy companies to pay the government in OIL and gas, rather than cash, for the privilege of drilling on government land. It has been the subject of multiple investigations since 2006 by the Interior Department's secretary, its inspector general, the Justice Department and Congress for alleged mismanagement and conflicts of interest.

In the report released yesterday, investigators said they "discovered a culture of substance abuse and promiscuity" in which employees accepted gratuities "with prodigious frequency." The report cited one e-mail from a Shell Pipeline representative asking a woman in the royalty office to attend "tailgating festivities" at a Houston Texans football game: "You're invited . . . have you and the girls meet at my place at 6am for bubble baths and final prep."

Besides Shell, the energy company employees mentioned in the report worked for Chevron, Hess and Gary-Williams Energy. The social outings detailed in the report included alcohol-, cocaine- and marijuana-filled parties where certain employees of the Minerals Management Service were nicknamed the "MMS Chicks" by the energy employees. The companies paid for federal workers to attend football and baseball games, PGA Tour events, Colorado ski trips, paintball outings and "treasure hunts," investigators found.

"The OIL INDUSTRY holds shocking sway over the ADMINISTRATION and even KEY FEDERAL EMPLOYEES,". "This is why we must not allow BIG OIL'S AGENDA to be jammed through CONGRESS."

The current director of the Minerals Management Service, said that he takes the report "very seriously".
Employees identified in the report told investigators that they didn't think ethics rules applied to them because of their "unique" role in the agency and that they needed to socialize with industry representatives for "market intelligence," according to the report. Those employees, some of whom have been transferred to different offices, have been recommended for internal administrative action.

The inspector general's release comprised three separate reports, including one devoted to the program's director. It alleges that Smith improperly worked part time for Geomatrix Consultants, an Oakland, Calif.-based environmental and engineering firm, and marketed the company to government clients.

Additionally, the report said that the director had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a subordinate whom he paid to buy cocaine, promising her a bonus in return. The director admitted to the sexual encounter.

The director, who now works for a private OIL company in Denver, did not respond to requests for comment. Investigators referred their findings to federal prosecutors.

Justice officials also declined to comment on their decision about the criminal case against the highest-ranking official named in the report director of the Minerals Management Service, who worked in Washington. She is accused of improperly arranging a million-dollar deal for two retired employees.

The wife of the procurement policy administrator for the WHITE HOUSE OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET, retired from government service Jan. 31. She declined to comment on the report. She told investigators she had a "personal issue. The Justice Department's decision to charge created a rift with Interior officials.

One of the two retired employees pleaded guilty in July to a federal conflict-of-interest charge related to the investigation. Another employee has been under investigation for similar conflict-of-interest allegations.

Before he left, Mayberry created a job for himself by writing the job description and the criteria for selecting the winning bidder, court documents show. He started a company out of his Texas home and was awarded a $150,000 contract in June 2003. He later hired Dial, the report said. Mayberry's firm collected $788,000 worth of contracts.

The royalty-in-kind program, which started as a small pilot project a decade ago, has been touted as a way to simplify the way OIL AND GAS COMPANIES pay for the right to drill on federal land and offshore. Instead of calculating the profit from a well, they can simply give the government one-eighth to one-sixth of whatever they take from the ground.

Revenue rose quickly, from $1.5 billion in 2004 to $4.3 billion last fiscal year. But the growth occurred "in an environment with relatively unstructured in-house oversight," the congressionally convened Royalty Policy Committee said in a December report. Previous reports have said that companies were allowed to revise their million-dollar bids for projects indiscriminately, that government workers routinely failed to seek out legal advice on complicated deals and that the agency used outdated computers and a $150 million software program that resulted in royalty money going uncollected.

A lawyer who represented states and tribes entitled to a cut of the royalties, said it was nearly impossible to get accurate numbers from the agency. "They kept hemming and hawing," she said.

In late 2006 questions arose over its handling of leases written in 1998 and 1999 that allowed major OIL companies drilling in the Gulf of Mexico to avoid BILLIONS of dollars in royalty payments.

Former Interior Department auditors accused the agency of failing to bill companies. "We weren't allowed to audit them. It was disturbing," said an auditor who sued the federal government for not collecting royalties. "You couldn't see what was going on."

The minerals agency director said that the harm done by the royalty employees was to public trust and TREASURY, and acknowledged that financial considerations were given to firms that gave favors to federal employees, and he said the contracts will be audited.

Do you really question the motives of GOP Republicans Criminals? America must Immediately Nationalize U.S. OIL and Gas For National Defense.

Navy pilot John Sidney D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain III should have never been allowed to graduate from the U.S. Navy flight school. He was a below average student and a lousy pilot. Had his father and grandfather not been famous four star U.S. Navy admirals, D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain III would have never been allowed in the cockpit of a military aircraft.

His father John S. "Junior" McCain was commander of U.S. forces in Europe later becoming commander of American forces in Vietnam while D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain III was being held prisoner of war. D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain III's grandfather John S. McCain, Sr. commanded naval aviation at the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.

During his relative short stunt on flight status, D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain III lost five U.S. Navy aircraft, four in accidents and one in combat.

D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain III lost jet number one in 1958 when he plunged into Corpus Christi Bay while practicing landings. He was knocked unconscious by the impact coming to as the plane settled to the bottom.

D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain's second crash occurred while he was deployed in the Mediterranean. Flying too low over the Iberian Peninsula, he took out some power lines which led to a spate of newspaper stories in which he was predictably identified as the son of an admiral."

D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain's third crash three occurred when he was returning from flying a Navy trainer solo to Philadelphia for an Army-Navy football game.

D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain's fourth aircraft loss occurred July 29, 1967, soon after he was assigned to the USS Forrestal as an A-4 Skyhawk pilot. While seated in the cockpit of his aircraft waiting his turn for takeoff, an accidently fired rocket slammed into D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain's plane. He escaped from the burning aircraft, but the explosions that followed killed 134 sailors, destroyed at least 20 aircraft, and threatened to sink the ship.

D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain's fifth loss happened during his 23rd mission over North Vietnam on Oct. 26, 1967, when D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain's A-4 Skyhawk was shot down by a surface-to-air missile. D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain ejected from the plane breaking both arms and a leg in the process and subsequently parachuted into Truc Bach Lake near Hanoi.

"Demands for military information were accompanied by threats to terminate my medical treatment if I [D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain] did not cooperate. Eventually, I gave them my ship's name and squadron number, and confirmed that my target had been the power plant."

When the communist learned that D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain's father was Admiral John S. McCain, Jr., the soon-to-be commander of all U.S. Forces in the Pacific, he was rushed to Gai Lam military hospital.

The communist Vietnamese figured, because POW D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain's father was of such high military rank, that he was of royalty or the governing circle. Thereafter the communist bragged that they had captured "the crown prince."

For 23 combat missions (an estimated 20 hours over enemy territory), the U.S. Navy awarded D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Commendation medals plus two Purple Hearts and a dozen service medals.

D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain had roughly 20 hours in combat. Since D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain got 28 medals, that equals out to a medal-and-a-half for each hour he spent in combat. There were infantry guys -- grunts on the ground -- who had more than 7,000 hours in combat where I'm sure a prison cell would have looked pretty good to them by comparison. The question really is how many guys got that number of medals for not being shot down.

D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain has been an unchecked master at manipulating an overly friendly and biased news media. The former POW turned Congressman, turned U.S. Senator, has managed to gloss over his failures as a pilot and collaborations with the enemy by exaggerating his military service and lying about his feats of heroism.

D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain has sprouted a halo and wings to become America's POW-hero presidential candidate.

Former naval officer and the owner of an OOIIILLLL-trading company that inked defense contracts worth $1 billion is the modern presidential money man. The law forbids high-level supporters from writing huge checks, but with help from friends in the Middle East D Student Obscenely Rich Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain is receiving large donations.

If FOX NEWS does not clean up it’s filthy RACIST acts of discrimination, then American and European audiences will B O Y C O T T FOX RACIST NEWS.

Barak Obama proved why November's presidential election will end in a 50-state sweep. John Crash Every Plane McCain has no chance. It's like George Bush climbing into the ring with Mike Tyson; one thundering left hook and the Crawford Caligula would be sprawled across the canvas. "No mas"! The same fate awaits the crabby senator from Arizona. The polls are skewed to look like there's a political horse-race going on. There isn't. It's a complete rout. There's one well-toned thoroughbred striding from venue to venue electrifying the ever-increasing throngs, and one doddering, old mare limping towards the glue-factory. Someone should put a stop to it before Crash Every Plane McCain gets hurt.

At the Victory Column in Berlin's Tiergarten, Obama extracted Old Glory from the burn-pile and gave Brand America a desperately needed shot of adrenaline. 200,000 ecstatic Germans jammed the streets in what turned out to be the political shindig of the year. Many of them were waving American flags and chanting, "Obama, Obama, Obama". It was like Jack Kennedy had risen from his moldy sepulcher and made his way across the pond for one last rousing ovation. Obama has the very same affect on crowds. Its a gift and he knows how to use it to great advantage.

"People of Berlin, people of the world, this is our moment, this is our time," Obama boomed. "I know my country has not perfected itself, we've made our share of mistakes and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions. But the greatest danger of all is to allow new walls to divide us from one another."

What can we say about Obama's oratory skills that hasn't already been said? He is one of those unique characters who knows how to tap into the collective psyche and put them under his spell. He is the closest thing to a Pied Piper we've seen in the last half century. Whatever one thinks of his politics, his speeches are a welcome reprieve from the simian blabbering of President Dimwit.

"I speak to you not as a candidate for president, but as a citizen; a proud citizen of the United States and a fellow citizen of the world." (Roaring applause)

JOHN Crash Every Plane McCain: Maverick or Freak?
Have you taken a look at the crowds at a Crash Every Plane McCain event. Usually, there aren't any. Typically, there are more journalists and cameramen then people; and even they look bored. It's the truth. He generates no enthusiasm at all. None. He may be the most uninspiring, tedious, pure-vanilla candidate of all time; a complete dud. I challenge anyone to recite from memory anything John Crash Every Plane McCain has ever said in his 40 years in office. Time's up! When Crash Every Plane McCain begins to talk, its a signal for women to pull out the nail-files and for men to figure out how they're going to get out of cutting the lawn this week. Really. No one listens.

And the people that do manage to drag themselves to his speeches out of a sense of obligation are (you guessed it) scowling white guys with baseball caps pulled tightly over their ears or nearly-ambulatory Korea-era Vets who think the United Nations is a communist front-group that's planning to air-drop blue-helmets into Duluth to take over the United States. Tin-foil hats anyone?

Popularity and charisma, how does one survive in politics with neither. That's the question, and it may be the biggest mystery of Crash Every Plane McCain's candidacy. He's just not a likable guy. No one ever talks about hanging out and having a beer with John Crash Every Plane McCain, because they know that he might go "Jackie Chan" and start busting the place up. And he's utterly impossible to listen to. His high-pitched squeaky voice is about two octaves higher than a dog-whistle and twice as annoying. So how is he going to beat Obama. It's a total mismatch.

Crash Every Plane McCain is the perfect candidate for the GOP Republic party that has completely collapsed. He's like the "Jolly Roger" on the front of an iodine bottle; Brand X. In 2000, the Republican Party boasted it was the "party of ideas". What ideas? The Republican Party has never had ideas because the corporate mandarins and blue-blooded kleptocrats that run the party are suspicious of ideas, ideology, doctrine, philosophy or anything else that veers from their primary objectives of crushing the poor, despoiling the environment, carpet-bombing brown people wherever they may be, and enriching themselves. That's all they care about. The task of the right-wing think-tanks is to treat "war and tax cuts" like they're ideas. They're not. But war and tax cuts ARE the two foundation blocks of the Republican Party. There's nothing else; there never has been. Don't look for ideas; there aren't any. GOP Republican get rich quick by defrauding the AMERICAN PEOPLE, robbing the National TREASURY, sending American jobs overseas, and raising the national debt.

Hold Bush, Cheney, Rice, and Crash Every Plane McCain accountable for the crimes they've committed during their time in office.

Obama is not a candidate; he's a phenomenon. Obama is an explosive, vital, charismatic politician. When he speaks people feel better about themselves and their country. And, they're more hopeful about the future, too. That's what makes him unbeatable.

Crash Every Plane McCain, on the other hand, is the perfect embodiment of his party; a rusty, broken-down hulk that's been stripped of its engine, its fenders and all its moving parts. Even the steering wheel is gone. It's a dead-loss; nothing is salvageable.

Crash Every Plane McCain is in way over his head. This election is going to be a real embarrassment for him. It's too bad. He should be back at the Phoenix Rest Home shooing kids off the front lawn instead of waiting for the ax to fall in November. It's a rotten way to end a career.

Obama will surprise everyone. I've personally been out in the community that I live which is a mixed community of middle class family and almost everyone I meet said yes they are supporting Obama.. I am registering a lot of new people who have never taken part in an election and they are excited about the race and are volunteering as well. I see Obama winning in November, closes but still a win.

DavidKae, I agree. If Obama were running his campaign as poorly as McCain is now, McCain would be ahead in the polls by 15%. Alas, McCain has an experience label that cures all his ills. If Obama was ever caught saying that he didn't understand the economy, had 7 houses, 13 cars, that the economy is sound, etc., he would be toast.

Posted by: BlueDotRedSea | September 23, 2008 4:25 PM | Report abuse

I don't buy the argument that the polls are skewed against Obama, the last two elections cut the other way, i.e. the Dems had poll leads that disappeared during the actual election. I honestly don't think that this election is that different. I guess election day will decide though, lol....

Also I don't buy this argument by Balz about the national over under way of looking at the elections, his sample size for these percentages is smaller than his sample size for the polls. Having one outlying poll out of 6 or 7 is not surprising, it is expected, so I think his numbers show Obama is pretty solid in minnesota, and McCain is pretty solid in Indiana.

I also don't buy Indiana and Ohio being comparable. Indiana is mainly rural, and except for the NW corridor only lightly industrial. Ohio is the rust belt. People in Ohio are voting for McCain for the same reasons that they voted for HRC, i.e. Obama just seems like another slick politician to them with a bunch of bogus mumbo jumbo promises.

I would like to see a correlation of these polls with the number of hispanic registered voters. Those numbers are in flux and could account for different demographic shifts. Also hispanics in the USA tend to form Microcommunities, i.e. there are lots of Salvadoreans in DC, Salvadoreans may tend to have different politics than latinos from Mexico, and obviously the Cubans in Florida.

When you have nothing to substantiate your argument you pull the race card. Obama is simply a shell uttering the liberal party lines. He is not a man to lead this country irregardless of his race. If Colin Powell was running I would not hesitate to vote for him a I see him as a man of character and integrity.

This will be an interesting election...I've seen polls that go both ways based on sex, race, location, age and issues. People are amazingly onesided about their candidate (I admit I am too), but I try to take a rationale look at the landscape and not add my bias into the mix. At this time, it looks like it will be an amazingly close race and if anyone really thinks they can predict a winner, they are not looking at the whole picture.

I'm voting for McCain. I think he is a centrist vs. a radical, which is Obama. I would have preferred Hillary, she is more centrist as well. Can't win 'em all.

Obama doing well in Indiana is less a function of statewide sentiment, and more a function of northwest Indiana's proximity to Chicago.

This transplanted Hoosier has a few comments. McCain will win a lot more counties than Obama. Southern Indiana mostly. The economy, while having some rough spots, is nowhere in as bad shape as parts of Ohio.

Counties to watch are Marion Indianapolis), Hamilton (wealthy, suburban that went for Obama vs. Clinton), Monroe (Indiana University), Lake (next to Chicago), St. Joseph (South Bend & Notre Dame), Allen (Fort Wayne) and Tippecanoe (Lafayette and Purdue). If the margin for Obama exceeds 60% in these counties, he squeaks out a win. If not, McCain gets it. Nader's not a factor, but Barr maybe. Southern Indiana, except for Monroe County and a few isolated areas, is Kentucky. "Nuff said!

Four observations for this election:

1. Polls in '08 primaries wildly under estimated the actual vote for Obama. One big reason is because "factoring" cell phone calls into the mix of land line calls while polling simply isn't good enough... And the largely non-landline youth overwhelmingly support Obama. BTW I'm middle aged and I don't have a land line.. The cell-only trend is not only among young people, and it is growing.

2. Ohio has been called the "Misissippi of the midwest" regarding attitudes of many in the state towards blacks. I certainly didn't invent that phrase- and its apparently accurate if you've ever been there. White power gangs of ignorant youths are all over Ohio.

3. African American turnout is STILL being estimated in historical terms. TOTALLY unrepresentative of this year's election, and certain to be much, much higher this year than in ANY previous election. What would the polls look like with a 40% turnout of the black electorate in ANY state? What about 50%? 70%? Think: "Obama Landslide".

4. People are still digesting Palin's ignorance and inexperience, her radical church, her secessionist husband, her belicose foreign policy statements.. calling out Putin for a war on national TV? STUPIDITY BEYOND BELIEF! And don't forget her blocking of the investigations into her crimes of official misconduct and illegal firing of state employees and intimidation of private citizens by the REPUBLICAN Alaska state legislature... Palin is JUST LIKE BUSH AND NIXON!

The nation's troubled economy will decide the election in people's minds - NOT personality as McCain's campaign manager insists. Putting America back on course will require educated, thoughtful, professional dedication that Obama exhibits.

...Not NEO-CON bumper sticker slogans like "Drill baby, drill".

I'm hoping that after the Obama landslide the pollsters are unmasked as incompetent so the MSM will pay less attention to the horserace, and focus on the issues.

The Pew Charitable trust did some research back in the summer about the accuracy of telephone polling.

http://pewresearch.org/pubs/901/cell-phones-polling-election-2008

What struck me was that those people who had only cell phones were about 1/3 less likely to be a registered voter, at that time. (There is no information on age). So in a poll of registered voters only, it would over-weight the land-line respondents.

However... if those people are registering (and by all accounts registration is much higher than previous elections) then the polls are under-counting them.

What fraction of newly registered citizens are going to vote for Obama? Most? Half? Less than half?

I can't wait for President Obama to move his stuff into the White House. Just think: a black man in the White House, with his black wife and two black children, sleeping in the White House beds, visited by their black friends... heh heh heh... Mike in Sac , the election will be decided by a contest between two un-measurable things: the Axelrod "ground game/cell phone youth" factor for Obama versus "the Bradley effect" against Obama. In my opinion they will roughly cancel each other out.

In analyzing Indiana's voting record, it might be helpful to know that from 1843 to the present, half of the governors of the state have been Republicans and the other half Democrats. Apparently Hoosiers view state issues and national issues through different lenses.

I believe there are a lot of Republicans that will vote for Obama....they just don't want their Republican friends to know.

I live in Texas and during the last election one would see "W" campaign bumper-stickers on a lot of cars. This year I've only seen one McCain/Palin bumper-sticker on a great big honking gas guzzling Hummer.

I do see a few Obama bumper-stickers in greater numbers than McCains...but still people here aren't displaying their choice.

So maybe there will be a November Surprise!

Many of the polls are not internally valid. Meaning you aren't measuring what you need or should be measuring.

These polls are typically of "likely voters" and that is an issue. Those who will or won't vote are not always represented in these polls. The young on cell phones won't be included and those who are not excited may end up not voting.

Excitement for McCain doesn't exist. Obama is twice as likely to get out his base as McCain. This is because his supporters are pumped up and excited. Palin will get out a few conservative white women, but it won't make up the difference.

Peter , you say that Obama is losing 6% of what would otherwise be his support to "race prejudice". But those people, with those inclinations, would be more conservative and pro-McCain in the first place, wouldn't they?

If this country gave the last election to a right-wing moron like Bush, why wouldn't McCain, a perceived moderate, naturally be doing better against a neophyte, first term liberal Senator this time around? If Obama loses it will be because he lost, not because racism won. There are people like me who are repelled by racism in any form and who will nevertheless be happy to vote for McCain.

By the way- those who say "Isn't it racism for African-Americans to ref;exiviely vote for Obama?", no it is not. That's identity politics. A big difference. If I were African-American I might feel the same way.

Here in Minnesota, my observation is that McCain has inundated the airwaves with ads, particularly since the Republican convention, including the ads with dubious and downright untrue claims about Obama's plan to increase taxes on the middle class and Palin's stance on the "Bridge to Nowhere," while the Obama campaign seems to have been MIA in Minnesota in September. Maybe Obama thought he had enough of a lead in Minnesota and could pend his resources elsewhere, but now the polls seem to be getting too close for comfort. Then again, Minnesota was a "purple" state in 2004, so Obama is probably performing about as well as Kerry did at this point, and Kerry won Minnesota in 2004 by a relatively small margin.

unfortunately i think race is a factor and it is so in certain states more than in other states.

The second factor is the fact except for Fox, most press believes in the false notion of balance for everything ie every issue even if patently clear must be obfuscated with an opposing point of view. So those of us who dont watch Fox suffer from a continued sense of stupor and confusion thanks to the inablity of reporters to ask meaningful follow up questions and to the false promotion of certain points of view.

Dave Diamond at 3:09 is right on: most of these are telephone polls, which unless the pollsters are very careful will skew "old". Since over 60 is the only demographic group where McCain has a clear lead, telephone polls favor McCain unless the pollsters are willing to throw out responses to adjust for bias.

By the way, the "margin of error" as stated in these polls is calculated assuming an unbiased sample size. However, if there is a bias in the sample, such as younger voters not having land lines, then the error is itself biased. Supposing a poll shows McCain at 45% and gives a 3% margin of error: if there is an age bias, then it could be that McCain is anywhere between 43% and 46%, with the mean being 45%.

I'm not sure if the pollsters have yet come to grips with the impact of technology on their business model.

Barack Obama is unqualified to be President of the United States of America.

No amount of obscene spending by Obama will EVER change that fact. Chicago thugs should NOT be in charge of our Democratic party or our government. We have enough problems.

The Democrats foolishly nominated the wrong candidate(s).

Hillary Clinton should be the nominee and would be the next President. Hillary could win this election in a walk.

Missed opportunities indeed.

The polls seem pretty transparent right now, if the election were held today (in terms of 'battleground states' from pollster.com a great web site for political junkies by the way) McCain would win Virginia, Ohio, WV, Indiana, Montana and Florida (which is not even close) his lead in all of those states has been solid all summer. I think Virginia will be close but Obama can't ride Warner's coattails because lots of people will Vote for Warner and McCain.

Obama will win Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania.

The election then comes down to: Nevada and Colorado to determine the winner. McCain needs to win both to win the election Obama can just win one. So unless something Changes Obama will win by a couple of electoral votes.

Let us say the number is 6% and represented in the pooling as undecided or included in the McCain number. If Obama was white, his polling number would be 53 or 54 not 48 or 47.

The sad part of this is Obama's opponents, first Senator Clinton and now Senator McCain have provoked prejudice rather than take a position against it.

The second sad part of is this is that the media has shied away from honestly talking about prejudice. Is the media as morally bankrupt as the prejudice voters?

GOP REPUBLICAN JOHN MCCAIN WALL STREET DEREGULATIONS

GOP REPUBLICAN JOHN MCCAIN sponsored landmark legislation in 1999 that removed the walls between banks, investment firms and insurance companies.

NEW YORK - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who has not held a press conference in nearly four weeks of campaigning, on Tuesday banned reporters from her first meetings with world leaders, allowing access only to photographers and a television crew.

CNN, which was providing the television coverage for news organizations, decided to pull its TV crew, effectively denying Palin the high visibility she had sought.

The campaign told the TV producer, print and wire reporters in the press pool that follows the Alaska governor that they would not be admitted with the photographers and camera crew taken in to photograph the meetings. At least two news organizations, including The Associated Press, objected and were told that the decision was not subject to discussion.

The real issue here is why isn't Obama running away with this. Between the war, financial troubles, total disgust with Bush Obama should be way ahead.

I think we see a lot of distrust with Obama, clearly racism is a factor, and if you look at the undecided I think most of the democratic undecided are really McCain people just not willing to say so. Remember that the undecided went to Clinton in nearly all the swing states and I think they will go to McCain.

Minnesota has never delivered a landslide for any Democrat. Gore won by 2.5% in 2000, and Kerry by 3.5% in 2004.

This is embarrassingly easy to explain.

Indiana shares part of the Chicago media market. While that is always the case, this time there is a Democrat with deep Chicago ties running for president. That may not be enough to tip the state, but it may be enough to make it close.

Minnesota, on the other hand, is where the GOP just had their slimefest a couple of weeks ago, and the selection of Sarah Palin was revealed there. GOP voters got personally involved in that convention. That may or may not be enough to turn the election, but it may be enough to make it close.

Never thought I would agree with George Will, but:

"Conservatives who insist that electing McCain is crucial usually start, and increasingly end, by saying he would make excellent judicial selections. But the more one sees of his impulsive, intensely personal reactions to people and events, the less confidence one has that he would select judges by calm reflection and clear principles, having neither patience nor aptitude for either.

It is arguable that, because of his inexperience, Obama is not ready for the presidency. It is arguable that McCain, because of his boiling moralism and bottomless reservoir of certitudes, is not suited to the presidency. Unreadiness can be corrected, although perhaps at great cost, by experience. Can a dismaying temperament be fixed?" (Today's column)

Another note to Alaskans: don't try seceding from the Union. We tried that down here back in 1861. Didn't work. A patriotic American believes in all 50 states together.

"America's economy does not face an emergency--only its financial system does. This is a distinction lost on the bankers in Washington, but it is one worth remembering. On Main Street, unemployment is 6.1 percent. Home prices are down close to 20 percent and presumably headed lower. These numbers are not pretty, but they do not add up to an economic Pearl Harbor or even close."

So John McCain was right afterall, and so that means Obama is simply fear-mongering because he thinks that it will help him win the election.

My Friend (s),

You owe $2,293.53 dollars to Wall Street Fat Cats Inc.... check, cash or charge?

How do you owe this money?

It's simple, George Bush wants a 700 Billion dollar bailout for Fat Cat bankers.
--700 Billion dollars divided by the current U.S. population = $2,293.53

How the heck did this happen?

You can thank John McCain and his top economic advisor Phil Gramm.
-
In 1999, after 60 years of successful regulation under the 1933 Glass-Stegall Act Republicans like Phil Gramm, John McCain and a bunch of Bank Lobbyists deregulated the banking industry and allowed banks to get involved in overly risky lending.

As predicted, those banks failed, taking others with them and we're now facing another stock market meltdown.

This wasn't the first (or even the second) time something like this happened:
-In 1982, under Republican Ronald Reagan the Savings and Loan/Banking industry was deregulated.
-
-Again, Republicans Phil Gram, John McCain, Lobbyists and fat cats like Charles Keating decided deregulation was a good idea. Let the Savings and Loan Companies do what they want!

-John McCain took hundreds of thousands of dollars of gifts and campaign contributions from Keating in exchange for doing his bidding.

-John McCain's gift to Charles Keating was the deregulation of S & L banks.

The results were frighteningly similar:

-Tax payers bailed out Fat Cat Bankers like Charles Keating with $124.6 billion.

-Google "Keating 5" and you'll see it all.

The pattern is simple:

-Republicans like John McCain, Phil Gramm and Lobbyists deregulate.
-Wall Street gets rich.
-You pay the bill.

Now John McCain who self-identifies as a "deregulator" wants to:

1.) Deregulate Health Care
2.) Privatize Social Security

We can't afford more of the same with John McCain.

How do you think Health Care and Social Security will turn out if John McCain and Phil Gramm get their way?

Wall Street doesn't care if you lost your job, or if you can't make your mortgage. But when they need a bailout, it's "Hello Big Government!"

Thanks,
Wall Street Fat Cats and Republican Presidential candidates Inc.

P.S.
Your kids owe $2,293.53 no matter how old they are.
Your parents owe $2,293.53 no matter how little they make.

The only question is, would this country survive it?

>>"If Obama is doing so well in Indiana, shouldn't he be doing better in Ohio"?

I think there are three things driving this phenomenon:

1. Journalists have forgotten that next to race, the strongest force, historically in American politics, is sectionalism. Indiana is neighbors to Illinois and, more importantly, part of Obama's home metro area, Chicago, spills out into northwestern Indiana. Just possibly, a "favorite son" effect -- so long a part of American politics -- but now so forgotten, or so rarely seen, is bouying Obama against Indiana's innate pro-Republican bent.

2. The depopulation of the American Midwest. Every year, there are fewer and fewer people in the stretch of the United states between the western slope of the Appalachians and the western slope of the Rockies. After about three decades of this now, demographic strains are showing. The people who remain in the Midwest do not exactly hew to the old Midwestern political curve. They're not so different, but apparently different enough now for the effect to start showing up in polls.

3. This election is spectacularly unique. Again and again we are presented with evidence that the unique character of the candidates -- women candidates, a black candidate, a maverick candidate -- is having on this election. Add to that the demographic trends above and add in all the social changes wrote by Internet organizing, 24-hour cable news, the decline of manufacturing, changes in the structure of the family, and you will get social trends that don't match the historical record.

Given all that, it seems reasonable that two of the most staid, and traditional parts of American -- MN and IN -- would show just the beginnings of the long-predicted shift in American culture.

It's pretty obvious why IN Is looking Obama.

As some have noted, much of it is in the Chicago media market & cultural lake effects region.

As far as most rural regions of IN are concerned, there are only five words you need to know: "corn ethanol biofuels subsidies programs". This is King Corn welfare, a horrible program that is causing a lot of our inflation nowadays (food inflation, specifically). Obama's a staunch supporter, as Illinois is a corn state, too, and is the 2nd biggest recipient of the subsidies. The obscenity that is the corn ethanol biofuels program, which Obama staunchly supports on account of being an Illinois senator, is also how Obama really got his Iowa support. A small pool of corn state bigwigs are keeping this horrific, inflationary, faux-energy-program alive, and Obama is one.

It's about character. And since Obama and Biden LIE about their own families, it's no telling what they'd do in the White House!

For YEARS, Biden has been LYING about how his wife and daughter were killed!

Dems for McCain/Palin!

****************************************
You have the nerve. John McCain, who dumped his then wife and had an affair with a rich chippie 20 years his junior. And Sarah Palin who is having a shot gun wedding for her daughter?

Go figure this on-line real-time poll at http://www. boppoll.com.

Obama's count, almost 2,000,000
McCain's count, not even 1,000,000

Why haven't any longtime friends of Obama come forward to speak on his behalf?
Ayers, Auchi, Rezko, etc - none of them spoke at the Dem convention.

Rezko is in court today on mortgage fraud charges -

Most nominee have longtime friends that speak on their behalf at the conventions.
Where are Obama's friends?

So, is Obama really going to pull the trigger and drop Joe Biden, or is this just another of his smoke screens to avoid discussing his snub of passing over Hillary? C'mon, Barry Obama, you can't keep voting "Present" you're in the big leagues now!

Nice try but no one is talking about Hillary being VP anymore.

"Wisconsin, like Indiana, borders Illinois."

The writer needs a lesson in geography.

The part of Indiana that borders Illinois ALSO borders Chicago and LOTS of people live there. THOUSANDS of them used to live in the Chicago area.

The part of Wisconsin that borders Illinois does NOT border Chicago and the number of Wisconsin residents closest to Chicago is SMALL. FEW used to live in the Chicago area.

The premise of the entire article -- the pro-Obama surge in Indiana is a mystery -- is undermined by the writer's unfamiliarity with geography.

I can explain some of what's going on in Indiana.

First, Indiana has a cultural relationship with Chicago. Yes, part of it is "media market" spillage. But it mostly has to do with the fact that many Hoosiers go to Chicago to work, and many Chicagoland residents attend universities in Indiana (Notre Dame, Indiana University, and Purdue University, primarily). Hoosiers know Chicago and Chicagoans, so they will relate to Chicagoans more readily than they would a, say, Arizonan.

Second, Indiana's islands of blue are growing, while the rural and red areas are losing residents. Democrats are in the majority in three areas of the state: northwest Indiana, near Chicago, which has a large black population; Indianapolis, which is attracting young workers who are more likely than rural county residents to be Democrats; and Monroe County, home to Bloomington, an extremely liberal college town.

Next time you consider Indiana, feel free to contact a political scientist here. You'll get a fuller understanding of what's going on than what I can provide.

Long before the two nominees were chosen, well before it all started, we were told this was the first election since 1928 (I believe) in which there is no incumbent in the race -- no sitting president and no sitting vice president. People noting this fact typically predicted that it would therefore be completely different from a normal election year.

Since then, it seems as though every possible surprise and twist and turn has occurred that could have, and this piece suggests that that "trend" (to expect the unexpected) may continue. I think the people pointing out the 1928 analogy a year or two ago were pretty smart.

FOX. You are not doing your job. It should not be close. More mud please. I see Bill O'Reilly is really steping up his bulls..t. Sean Hannity is, well, Sean Hannity. Frighten the folks with Rev Wright and Ayers. And by all means necessary, do not let Palin have a press conference. Remember, John is a War Hero. Let them know, do they want an empty suit or a wrinkle suit.

Go Obama.

Republicans really think and believe that the American people are stupid and vote mostly against their interest. They may be right because anyone that reads this and believe that Obama is an elitist, is stupid in deed.

"After the brouhaha over Sen. John McCain's struggle to recall how many houses he owns, Newsweek wondered how many cars might be parked at the presidential candidate's multiple homes."

.

It gets better..:

"McCain has a 2004 Cadillac CTS, a 2007 half-ton Ford pickup truck, a 1960 Willys Jeep, a 2008 Jeep Wranger among other American cars. He's got a few foreign vehicles in his fleet as well, owning a 2005 Volkswagen convertible and a 2001 Honda sedan."

The only vehicle registered in Obama's name is a 2008 Ford Escape hybrid.

"McCain's wife, Cindy, an heiress to a beer distribution company, has her name on 11 vehicles but actually only drives one car -a Lexus with the personal plates MS BUD."

McCain can't even keep his story straight.....

"One vehicle in the McCain fleet has caused a small flap. United Auto Workers president Ron Gettelfinger, an Obama backer, accused McCain this month of "flip-flopping" on who bought daughter Meghan's foreign-made Toyota Prius. McCain said last year that he bought it, but then told a Detroit TV station on Sept. 7 that Meghan "bought it, I believe, herself."

Straight-talk?

Geez Dan, roughly 10% to 15% of the population in those states are undecided. Most of the undecideds will not decide until the day of the election or perhaps a few days before the election. No use analyzing Nov. 4th until perhaps Nov. 1st.

Rust Belt swing voters are truly on a wild self-induced roller coaster ride. The polls are swinging by double-digits in the big swing states. What does that mean?

Don't hurt yourself Dan Balz.

Here is how I see it. Don't believe the poll hype.

Obama wins decisively in Wisconsin by 10+pts. Obama edges out McCain by 2pts. Obama wins decisively in Minnesota by 10pts. Obama wins by 5+pts in Ohio over McCain.

The easy and lazy attitude is to go with polls (a supposedly random sampling of 300 to 900 persons).

The key numbers you and other political pundits should be looking at is the number of people registered or are registering Democrat vs Republican vs Independents in each of the swing states.

This will be a historic, game changing election. Bush and the Republicans took a healthy country and clobbered it. They've destroyed the economy, the surplus, started unnecessary wars, ignored necessary government regulation because of an extreme anti-government ideology. McCain embraced the whole package and now has even embraced Bush's campaign strategy of fear and distortion.

Choosing Palin, McCain's first executive decision, was reckless, impulsive and desperate. Not the qualities we need in a President. Even George Will has decided that McCain can't be trusted in the White House.

Bush/McCain?? No More Years!!

Do journalists/press/media not understand that the McCain campaign--the No Talk Express as someone dubbed it--is being run as though McCain/Palin are already in the White House? And....that White House is the same as the Bush White House. Secrecy, refusal to answer subpoenas, mendacity, etc. The reason? McCain/Palin's "handlers," strategists and advisers are all out of the Bush campaigns and the Bush administration! Please tell me where the change is?
