Oh Baby! The Spears-Palin Connection

By Roxanne Roberts
We're now skating the fine line between fact and satire: Jamie Lynn Spears -- the 17-year-old lil' sis of Britney who had a daughter in June -- has sent a baby gift to 17-year-old Bristol Palin because she, like, totally KNOWS what's it's like to be a celebrity unwed mother.

Spears (actually her mother Lynne) called Beverly Hills baby boutique Petit Tresor looking for something nice (but not THAT nice; $100 or less) and settled on white burp cloths with pink writing, a spokesman for the store confirmed today. The package, with a note reading, "Dear Bristol: Hang in there......xoxo, Jamie Lynn" was shipped off to the Alaska Capitol building.

The McCain campaign put Britney Spears and Paris Hilton in the infamous "Celebrity" ad, now the Spears family has interjected itself into the mix. What's next? A double wedding? Off-white for the brides?

The best news: Saturday Night Live writers already have enough material for the entire season.

Turns out the whole story was false as Jamie Lynn denies sending any gift. Could this have been a false story put out by the McCain camp to gain sympathy or better publicity than from the poor choice of running mate headlines.

Hate to burst your bubble Thozmaniac, but none of the girls raised in my "liberal" (and there are 6 of us) family had any out of wedlock babies, crack or otherwise.

We were taught to make good choices, and to protect ourselves. Something poor Bristol clearly wasn't taught.

Ms. Sarah Palin---Like Mother, teaches daughter???

The Luv Guv says she was a PTA Mom for improved education in school, but just don't teach sex education because we want Abstinence Only -- Didn't seem to work for her, as she eloped to marry on August 29, 1988 and had her first child April 20, 1989--so if you do the MATH that is 7 months 22 days---my Dad always said the first one can come anytime and the second kid takes 9 months. Guess he was right!

So which is it? I'm SO confused. Hypersexual teen girl singers gyrating on stage getting pregnant is good or bad?? Just say no, abstinence-only sex education instead of real sex education is better because parents should teach their own children about sex, not the schools but it doesn't work so it's better to "choose" to not have an abortion and become an unwed teen mom, except being pro-choice is wrong because of abortion so let's take away the right to choose. Can we stop teen age pregnancy by teaching sex-education which works but some people says encourages teen age sex except that there are fewer teen pregnancies where there's sex ed instead of abstinence only but it's still OK to get pregnant because Jamie Lynn did it and Bristol did it and they're good girls because they "chose" to not get an abortion but they were bad to have had sex and gotten pregnant but they didn't know that they could get pregnant because they didn't have any sex education .. but ... they're both white girls so that's better than black unwed teen age moms because they're all on welfare but still, the unwed teen age moms are a sure sign of the moral decay in America which is why we're supposed to support Republicans and conservative christian evangelicals because they are the morality party who know precisely how God wants us to live which is why they want to run the country according to the Bible except when so many of the Republican officials and Church leaders get caught having sex with other men and their leaders have children who are gay and get pregnant when they're teenagers but I should still hate liberals because they control everything and are immoral and unpatriotic, even when they have real war medals from fighting instead of an honorable discharge from a National Guard unit that no one can remember him.

You can't have both ways - family values and lack of values that this family ignored to guide the youngster to use good judgment and avoid teen (unwed) pregnancy, most certainly that would destroy family cohesion.

I do not think America wants to convey such message to the world that how irresponsbile our kids are being brought up. Undoubtedly, if the matter finds it way to the proximity of the White House, we would certainly become a laughing stock of the world.

This shows the mentality of the American public. We'd rather discuss two 17 year-olds' baby issues than actual political issues. This election season is a joke.

However, I think this is an in your face example of the flaws of Sarah's anti-choice anti-education?access to birth control stance. She should stop trying to force her religion on the rest of us. Seperation of Church and State is for a good reason!!!

Republicans are sooo mad about the media reporting anything that makes them look bad. On one hand that reminds me of Chinese communist party censorship, on the other hand, the Chinese communst party, depite their many flaws, has done way better by their people than the Republicans have these past 8 years. If public favor was on the GOP's side then they would not get so much bad press. Gotta earn that!! I certainly don't trust the Republicans to be fair and balanced when all they seem to do is attack.

No one is trashing the daughter, it is the mom who home schools her kids and teaches abstinance only who is a failure at her job and with her philosophy. Don't teach use of condoms, get an unwanted child.

And exactly what are the values of you right wing double-talkers, anyway, that underage unwed sex and pregnancy is ok if there is good support and money in your family to support the child? Is that in your ten commandments? Well, if support is needed, you preach no condoms, and don't believe in abortion, and a child could tell you how ineffective abstinance education is, as it works against nature and instincts and facts on the ground- well it is about time Republicans came out for public funding to support unwed mothers! Finally. I applaud you frauds for that

As a conservative republican, I believe in the defense of marriage and family values. Pregnant teens above the age of consent should marry the fathers of their babies if the sexual intercourse was consensual and they are both single. If the mother is not of the age of consent, and the laws were broken, then the father should be prosecuted.

Funny isn't it?
How liberal's support same sex marriage, handing out condoms to 6th graders, bigger government that usurps the rights of the parents over the way they raise their own children, NAMBLA (North American Man Boy love association), and so forth and so on....(it's a very long and perverted list), but trash a young 17 year old girl and attempt to ruin her (and Sarah's) life over a mistake made by two young people.

Of course liberal children would never act in such a way.
No, they'd have several "crack" babies by now sucking off the Government tit.

What's all this talk about Sarah's children got to do with the way she would do her job as VP anyway? NOTHING!

Talk about hypocrites.
And to the person asking why Republicans were "so old",...
If you detest the older people so much maybe you and the rest of us will get lucky and you'll never have to put up with it.

I had to respond to the comments of "Mo" below me. You can almost always recognize a Neocon, because their messages are 1. overly simplistic 2.filled with hate and fear, and 3. usually filled with completely false information.

Im willing to bet that like myself, most americans probably hold conservative positions on most issues, but it is the hijacking of the republican party by people like Mo that makes it so that there is only one viable choice in the upcoming election. Lincoln is rolling over in his grave. Observe:

"Democraps get confused over their own sexuality" - This was probably written by Mo on a laptop while he was tapping his foot underneath a Washington airport bathroom stall

"There are two types of Democraps, those who are the _elite_" - You mean the kind who marry into $100 million, and forget that they own more than 7 homes?

"They don't like Palin because they are typically jealous. Just like a little child, they try and find dirt" - This being said from someone in the same party that produced Karl Rove? Really?

"If you do win this election, we look forward to 4 years of you screwing it up" - I can't believe you would even have the nerve to say that after the best and brightest your party could put forth for the last 8 years was George W. Bush

"4 years of a cowering war fearing tax hiker that would rather you stand in a cheese line, than actually do something with your life would be great for you people." - Well, thanks to the current administration, we are embroiled in an indefinite war (the war on "terror"! we wont give up until terror everywhere is defeated!) so your first "point" is kindof irrelevant. As far as tax hikes, you must be kidding. I think you need to reread the GOP platform.

I am ashamed of myself for writing this idiotic article. I should know better than to pick on defenseless children.

This country was founded and built upon conservative values, and it is plainly obvious that the more that liberals chip away at these values the more problems arise.

Just think, the more and more that conservatives lose to liberals, the more this country is falling apart.

You can't blame that on anyone else.

I am officially apologizing for this article and switching my political party line to be Republican as I am tired of being low down dirty scum and want to actually go home and enjoy life with a loving family rather than my 9 cats and lesbian life partner.

Posted by: Roxanne Roberts | September 4, 2008 3:07 AM | Report abuse

Dont fall for this. The McCain campaign "disclosed" Bristol Palin's pregnancy in order to distract attention from her mother's extremist views and the fact that she is embroiled in scandal (troopergate). It also extends the free pass that the media has already been giving McCain.

Posted by: brian | September 4, 2008 3:00 AM | Report abuse

Haven't we come to expect that the Democratic party is mostly full of self-loathing and seriously confused individuals?

Democraps get confused over their own sexuality, let alone throwing politics and in fact just plain common sense into the mix.

There are two types of Democraps, those who are the _elite_ who "know best" and make decisions for the second type, who in most circumstances need the first type to bail them out of stupid situations like crack dealing, stupid mortgage loans and the occasional global warming scams.

I find it rather humorous, that Democraps want so much freedom, yet they want to give all of the control to these elite.

They don't like Palin because they are typically jealous. Just like a little child, they try and find dirt, but failing to realize that their own pathetic little lives are far worse off and they could never achieve what she has.

Good luck with that party line.

If you do win this election, we look forward to 4 years of you screwing it up, so we can laugh the entire time and poke fun at you little weenies this time around.

4 years of a cowering war fearing tax hiker that would rather you stand in a cheese line, than actually do something with your life would be great for you people.

I can guarantee, 4 years of that and you will all be begging for a normal person to step back in and fix it like we always do.

No, but she's a Republican so she's going to force her daughter to have the baby and then get married. Which is much better, since 17 year olds are so mature and the husband who never finished highscool will be a great provider. But wait!!! It must be quite a substantial sum to get him to smile so broadly and so constantly. Will the shotgun wedding be before or after the election? Does the prenuptual agreement stipulate what, if anything, Levi will get in the divorce? Do the terms depend on the outcome of the General Election in November?

Thank you for the vulgar gossip. It is unfortunate that some find their identities by dis-robing the privacy of others.

There is sufficient real news to keep public amusement. Look to the daily cost of the USA debts to foreign financial institutions. If you feel compulsively driven to the satisfaction of public scandal then ask the many subprime financial engineering groups, “Where did the money go?” The public will feel considered grimace with the volume of USA debt divided by the USA population.

Perhaps, driven with a need to stand in the center of spectacular storm then, vulgar gossip excites.

Vulgar gossip falls short of a truly spectacular storm. For a truly spectacular political storm then, you could support giving the FBI another 5,000 financial crime investigation officers to bring justice into the subprime financial engineering of Wall Streets' SIV crisis.

Please – do find satisfaction in public amusement.

to those wh think this is none of their business, you need to wake up. bodies that age are not truly mature enough to cope with the stress and rigors of a full term pregnancy. nor are the emotions. to wit, they have frequent ER visits and complications, including alcohol, infection, std and bodies with out the capacity for the fetus. fortunatly insurance pays for this, yours, mine and everyone else's. have you looked at your premiums and coverage lately. one is growing and the other is shrinking. then the lack of pre natal care leads to other complications that compromise the newborn's life chances.
BTW, sex ed is widely taught in the U.S., in music, tv, movies, the streets, back allys, and bathrooms everywhere. don't even try to pretend you've never heard any of the lessons. you may even have given a lecture or two yourself.

Hey Jack - Good point. There is a thing in the federal government called a suitability investigation. Every position in the Federal Government is subject to a suitability determination. That investigation is authorized to determine whether a person poses a threat to national security. It is my suspicion that Palin’s husband will be banned or restricted from the Whitehouse. He has belonged to a group which advocated Alaska secede from the United States. Alaska is a strategic defensive position between the lower 48 and Russia. Those defensive positions are federal positions and are not controlled by the Governor of Alaska. Again overly simplified.

Bristol Palin has a rough road ahead. Looks like she's going to enter into marriage with a young man who appears to be unready to assume this great responsibility. This would be a crisis for almost any family - liberal or conservative. Shame on both sides for trying to take advantage of this situation. By that, I don't mean so much the candidates as the rabid dogs in the press. Let's leave this kid out of the limelight. The current explotations are pointless, cruel and misleading. What happened here happens every day to all kinds of families. Many of these young marriages will quickly crash and burn. Some will utterly fail at parenthood. But, there's also plenty of success stories where the kids rise above their circumstances. Who are any of us to say how this will turn out? We don't need a bunch of press pundits to do a pre-game show as this very young new family forms.

Some will say that Bristol's pregnancy is a reflection (or even a direct result) of Sarah Palin's stand on birth control and sex education. I believe that it just proves that Sarah Palin has a daughter that she loves and supports. The same thing could happen in almost any family. Let's not try to draw too many conclusions from this one data point.

I want to see more decency and disgression from the press on this issue. Let's focus on what matters. Is Sarah Palin sufficiently experienced to be our VP? Has she shown the judgement to be allowed to represent our country on the international stage? Are her political views right for America? Is there any indication that she handle the role of commander in chief? No, a moose hunt doesn't count as military experience. Is her past reasonably free of ethical lapses? Who does she owe for coming so far so fast in political life? Can she lead? These are the kinds of questions that matter.

Sarah Palin's daughter made a very common youthful mistake. It sounds like she's going to try to make the best of it. Let's just leave it at that and send our best wishes for happiness and prosperity. If Bristol runs for office one day, we can revisit the issue and question her judgement when it becomes some of our business.

As for Ms. Roberts, who wrote this garbage, I am sure she stayed home and went to bed every night at 8 PM sharp when she was 17. She made no mistakes or did anything that she later regretted. Is there anyone on this post that does not know someone that this happened to?

I am not saying that what Bristol did was right, but this article and other like it is downright disgusting.

As for the democrats posting here, remember your messiah was born to an 18 year old unwedded mother.

Hey Will - If they enter the State of Virginia and not be married then Levi can be charged with sexual assault and transporting a minor across state lines, and more. Bristol will be placed in Child Protective Services and her mom and dad may have to come to Virginia to get her. They are now in Minn. and Minn. laws are the same as Alaska. Again this is terribly simple.

Posted by: theodosia1 | September 3, 2008 11:18 PM | Report abuse

The point of privacy is moot. They have become public figures and have sacrificed a reasonable expectation of privacy. That's why we get to hear about Palins pregnancy and Bill's infidelity and Gore's kids and even Obama's blow. If they wanted to keep their family life private they should have gone for a different line of work. I want to know what the president and his family are like (yes a 17 year old unwed mother living in the VP's townhouse is family.) Part of it is because I want to see how they react. Not for parenting tips but rather to see how they perform under pressure.
Now why do I think he picked Palin? Makes an even historic ticket for both parties, makes it even that VP's both have son's going to Iraq. She has a brief enough history that very little she does will get traction. McCain's history in the Senate may be a big problem for him and he can deflect to his charming she-hulk for responses that will make the country go "Oh, bless her heart, she's so cute." Come on Republicans you said Hillary couldn't do it cause she was a woman and prone to emotional swings. It is McCain who should be charged with sexual harassment. If this was a normal workplace McCain would be charged with sexual harassment. Leering (eye balling) is prima facie for a charge of sexual harassment. Watch McCain checking out Sarah’s A$$

Hey Will and Don.- Alaska's age of consent is 16 years old. It is lowered to 15 if the perp reasonably believes the child to be 16. It is lowered to 13 so long as the perp is not more than 3 years older (16). Our children in Virginia grow a little slower, so, our age for consensual sex 18. Now this is an over simplification of the rule of law.

To frank, do some research yourself, its not everywhere in alaska we dont have to pay state sales tax, in fact our tax rate is at 7.5. so do some research yourself

Posted by: Kelsey | September 3, 2008 10:57 PM | Report abuse

Why is it that alaska is so rich it can give their residents $3200 tax credits but
can't pay for their own road projects. Sounds like they're scamming the American tax payers of the flat 48 and she's leading the charge.

Sorry, get this hypocrite out of my site.
She is a radical fringe agent, she kowtows to anti-americans who disrespect the flag.

I supported McCain in 2000, but he's caved in to the same extremist forces Bush has. Enough already. I want America back.

This whole Palin thing feels forced and weird. He should've picked Huckabee or Romney...bet yet Ron Paul.

To Will
If you simply google "age of consent in Alaska" you will find that 16 is legal age. So no stat. rape. Every state is different.

Posted by: jim | September 3, 2008 10:55 PM | Report abuse

So in order to support Palin, we should have our under age daughters get pregnant and our sons all go to the war?
Sorry! I don't think this is the way I am going to teach my children.

No McCain and No Palin.
Our children to better education to be ahead of rest of world.

It doesn't make sense that Alaska residents get $3200/year as part of its oil sharing profits while the rest of the U.S. doesn't share in the oil profits. Mind you, we are in Iraq trying to convince the Kurds, Shia, and Sunni to share oil profits. I am a Soldier and I served in Iraq, so I have a little credibility. Do some digging yourselves and find out how much Alaska gets from federal funds from earmarks even though its residents don't even pay state taxes.

At least Jamie Lynn can recognize real homespun American values when she see them! I'll betcha her burp cloths will look real swell alongside the baby seal skin throw I'm fixin' to send her next. What's wrong with all these mean media types anyway? Just wait until Bristol's mom takes the podium in a few minutes and really gives 'em whatfor.
You go, girl! Give 'em heck, Sarah! Bash those neo-Marxist media types right where it hurts. How can anyone even DARE infer that this woman is not the single-best prepared and qualified Republican on the planet to be Sen. McCain’s VP choice? Her resume clearly indicates she’s more than ready to stand a heartbeat away from the oval office and fill in the top spot when it will all-too-likely be required of her. Besides, she’s just like us, right? Who among us doesn’t enjoy shooting the occasional moose from a speeding snowmobile, plunging into an icy river and catching a hurtling Chinook salmon bare-handed, grizzly bear style? Besides, those Obamas don’t share our values and are alarmingly different, even “elitist,” huh?(Code words “secret Muslim”, “angry black woman”, "Angela Davis- clone" and “uppity” may be substituted as needed here.) Anyway, those little Obama girls are way too cute and wholesome looking to be real, don’t you think? What hockey team have they ever played on? And I’m willing to bet you a pound of my best caribou milk mozzarella that THEIR mom has never wrestled a polar bear or even skinned an arctic wolf for that matter. Sarah is the spitting image of every June, Jane or Jean Doe in America!
Let’s hear it for those good old fashioned “family values” and climb on board for one heck of a sleigh ride across the “bridge to nowhere”. In fact I’m so giddy about all this I think I’ll just do the can can all the way to Ketchikan!

It's all about having some moral values. Parents talk to your kids about sex. Your gentiala are not going anywhere, it will be with you for the rest of your life. Sexual intercourse is not a big deal anymore - it is as easy to get as ABC. All organs with respect to gender and phyical health all work the same way. Make sexual intercourse a part of a meaningful relationship.

"While I agree that Miss Palin's pregnancy should be her family's private matter, I can't grant them that privacy. Why not? Because Mom would have all families do what SHE wants, and not be able to make our own decisions in private. "

Let me summarize: "I disagree with Palin's policies, so it is acceptable for me to attack her family."

Whatever helps you sleep at night. Hopefully someone will humiliate a family member of yours. And I hope there is some hateful jerk like you there to laugh in their face.

I agree that the pregnancy of Gov. Palin's teenage daughter is a private family matter. That's why I don't understand why the Alaska governor and Sen. McCain would fly out the father-to-be to St. Paul so he can be part of this circus. To see McCain greeting this kid upon arrival in Minnesota says a lot about the opportunism of these so-called adult candidates for the nation's highest office.
