Palin Plans Interview With ABC Next Week

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has agreed to her first interview since last month, a aide to Sen. John McCain's campaign said today. She will sit down with ABC News anchor Charles Gibson later this week, the aide said.

Palin's media relations are off to a rocky start, with reporters grumbling about being unable to ask her questions directly and campaign officials complaining about what they regard as the intrusively personal nature of some reporters' inquiries.

Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, said this morning on "Fox News Sunday" that Palin would not submit herself to a "cycle of piranhas called the news media" until reporters started to treat her with "with some level of respect and deference."

Hours later, the campaign aide disclosed the plans for Gibson to interview Palin later this week in Alaska. The adviser spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not been made.

Palin has delivered speeches since she was named to the Republican ticket, but she has given only one interview, to People magazine on the day she was introduced as McCain's running mate. McCain advisers rebuffed interview requests last week by saying that she needed all her time to prepare for last Wednesday's speech before the Republican National Convention.

That has left campaign aides and surrogates to address questions about her political record, including policies she followed in Alaska and a state investigation into whether she improperly tried to get her ex-brother-in-law, a state trooper, fired.

"Eventually she's going to have to answer questions and not be sequestered," Sen. Joseph Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, said today on NBC's "Meet the Press."

The Obama campaign and the liberal media is in disarray, confused and foaming at the mouth after the Maverick, John McCain chose Sarah Palin, a woman reformer for VP. Their response has been a vicious attack on Sarah ranging from insults to smearing and the sexist tactics that brought Hillary's campaign crashing down.

Obama fractured and divided the democratic party when he rejected the choice of 18 million democrats and instead of choosing Hillary for VP, he chose an old Washington politician Joe Biden, and by this grave mistake in choice, negated the flag of "change" Obama had been waiving and replaced it with the "more of the same" one.

On the other side, The Maverick stole the mantra of change from Barack when he selected a woman reformer for VP, who has gained the respect of the State she governs as well as of the nation governors.

The McCain/Palin ticket has also given hope to all the 18 million former Hillary supporters who now have a very compelling reason to vote for the republican ticket, as a way to put their country first by electing a president that has the qualifications, experience and love for our country and at the same time elect a woman to the White House as equal partners in governance and leadership of our country.

Why are are neighbors so worried about your hot VP. Yep, I am older and youth is beautiful, but think of how much your war is costing everyday. You could rebuild and help all the people of your nation suffering from hurricanes now, not next year. Have I missed something??

Anyone who votes Republican this year is more delusional than the candidates they support. In recent weeks, John McCain and the Republican party have blatantly and without any shame adopted the Democratic campaign theme of “change”. It should be evident to an objective observer that Bush 43 and now McCain and Pailin are mere puppets to the true Republican national party leaders who control their strings. Cheney is one of the few of that inner cabal that have been calling the shots since the Nixon administration. They are in fact a continuation of the Nixon and Ford presidencies with only a disruption during the Carter and Clinton years. Bush 41( Head of the RNC during Nixon,former head of the CIA,VP to Reagan, and president is probably the real leader of this political Cosa Nostra if not a equal partner of this power sharing musical chairs game. His right and left hands have been Dick Cheney(former Sec.of Defense of Bush 41, former White House Chief of staff for Ford) and the other is Donald Rumsfeld(former Sec. of Defense for Ford and Bush 43,former special envoy to the Middle East during Reagan). Another member of this group, more likely a captain if not a full blown boss himself is James Baker (former C.O.S of Reagan, former Under Sec. of Commerce for Ford, former C.O.S and Sec of State for Bush 41, former Sec. of Treasury for Reagan, former chief legal advisor to Bush 43). Another captain or free lance enforcer is Karl Rove a college drop out and campaign manager for both Bush 41 and 43, also for Phil Gram who is McCain’s economic advisor.
Lets look at McCain’s staff of change.
On July 2, 2008, Steve Schmidt was given "full operational control" of McCain's campaign. Steve Schmidt prior to this was a top aide to Dick Cheney and a protégé to Karl Rove. Another advisor is Charles R. Black worked for Ronald Reagan's two Presidential campaigns in 1976 and 1980 and he was a senior political adviser to the 1992 re-election campaign of George H.W. Bush. Another advisor is Randy Scheunemann. He was project director for the Project for the New American Century. A neo-conservative think tank founded by non other than Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Bill Kristol and others in 1996. These people have never cared about small town america or “values” All they care about is war profiteering. Many of the signatories have never served in the military. Cheney and Rove both dodged the draft. Look at the statement of principles by the PNAC. Rumsfeld was a good friend of Saddam Huessin in the 80’s Cheney didn’t want Nelson Mandela free. These are the real puppet masters, they throw out the talking points about the left of being elitist and not caring about middle america and these same guys other than Rove have advanced degrees and are worth no less than 10 million dollars. People who support them need to extricate their heads out of Limbaugh and Hannity’s asses and see what is really happening to them. McCain is not his own man he confuses stories of his real life with a book he read “The Gulag Archipelago", in which a fellow prisoner - not a guard - silently drew a cross in the dirt with a stick.” An ironic twist to all this is Eliot A. Cohen, a signatory to the PNAC "Statement of Principles", responded in The Washington Post: "There is no evidence that generals as a class make wiser national security policymakers than civilians. George C. Marshall, our greatest soldier statesman after George Washington, opposed shipping arms to Britain in 1940. His boss, Franklin D. Roosevelt, with nary a day in uniform, thought otherwise. Whose judgment looks better?"[

Thes are all verifiable facts and can be found just with a google search.

Other than the ultra affluent, how can anyone support the Republican party? When will small town America realize that they are being duped into supporting the ultra-affluent agenda. The talking points of the right are so hypocritical that it becomes laughable. The red meat of the right is the so called Main stream Media as if Limbaugh, Hannity, et al. are not part of it. They demean celebrity status, however they tout one of their greatest presidents(Reagan) was an actor. They say they are the party of patriotism, yet many of the upper echelon of the party have never served, i.e. Cheney, Rumsfeld, Baker, Reagan. They say that they care about "Main Street" USA but only bail out the Whales of Wall Street. Yet small town America eat this tripe every year. They don't care about relgion unless it can be used to stir up the base, nor science or technology unless there is a buck to be made. Small town America takes pride on its freedom but yet don't realize that over time we are becoming less free, ie wire tapping and other forms of domestic survelliance. They demean people of intelligence because they know many people of small town America don't have degrees and use it at a fake issue and call people who spent time in academia as elitist when many on the right serve on university boards and have part-time professorships. They say they are against affirmitive action but yet celebrate mediocrity, Bush43 and McCain graduating at the bottom of their classes. Who both came from already well established families and had all the opportunities and connections to excel. Why does small town America believes this is the party for them? Christian conservatives seem to the be the first ones who want to go to war and bomb someone before any diplomacy is tried. Why can't small town America and Christian conservatives realize they are being used as pawns just as much the Islamic fundamentalist are. Islamic fundamentalist come from small town Middle East and given the same kind of talking points as the evangalicals. They want prayer in school, no choice available to women, and believe to the core that their ideas about worship and country are the best. Wake up small town America you are being played.

Also she takes no prisioners and McCain has the same explosive attitude especially towards women.

Tim, your reading comprehension is sorely lacking...I'm prochoice and stated it with in post. I am shocked that Obama voted against allowing medical attention to the surviving infants after a failed abortion( The Infant Protection Act)....I mean how grissly can you get- picture with me Tim the horror in the room when an infant starts to cry in distress and the doctor has to decide whether to break Obama's supported law by starting an IV or putting in a feeding tube-WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU AND OBAMA IF YOU DON"T SEE THE HORROR IN THIS? Obama even lied about how the Illinois law differs from the federal version...and THEN when pressed, he admitted that he lied!

Responding to the comments made by Davis of the McCain campaign to Fox News yesterday...Why does the McCain campaign feel it has to protect the VP candidate from "attacks" on her family and personal life and demand that the media treat her with respect and DEFERENCE(?!)? Is this for real? This is the candidate, afterall, that the McCain team has told us is ready on day one to be president if McCain kicks the can. If so...isn't it logical to assume that she's also ready to deal with the press and any questions it may ask? Isn't this a basic pre-req for the possibility of suddenly having to become president? When was the last time that any candidate for president protected his male VP running mate from "media attacks?" And shielded him from media interviews until he was "ready?" Such explanations from the McCain campaign and their protection of Palin is sexist and also undermines her credibility as a serious candidate for VP. God protect poor Sarah if she ever becomes president some day, because she's gonna have to answer questions that are much weightier than the ones the McCain currently wants her to avoid. And God protect us, as well. What a costly way to get a woman into the White House.

I just saw the video on youtube in which Obama admits that he is muslim. He says "my muslim faith". George from abc had to remind him of his own faith "christian"?

Rampant rumor says the truth of the matter, the candidate that successfully target and murder mutual opponents wins the election in November. That this opponent has exposed corruption in both parties is the reason. Does that mean, as another sharp critic and opponent to both, should we worry about our family's physical safety too? Will our car be tampered? Bodies targeted while on the street? Etc.? Hm....

here's how the "media" works in the US. the newspapers, radio stations, tv-stations, internet sites are bought & grouped together by large corporations or someone with lots of cash, like Bill Gates.

then, the media administrator/administration picks their top women & top men - those who do the hiring & firing. the top men know which side of the bread is buttered & which is not. they have strict orders to make money or else. they have orders of what to say & what not to say. the numerous, non-important people (e.g., journalists) who write/speak/print/sing ... in the US media are not free like the wind is. they get fired if they go to far astray from predetermined parameters. the US media are highly censored & controlled by a small but wealthy group of people.

if you ever watch foreign tv, listen to international radio, read news other than English, you will discover in an instant that the US media are very, very, very politically tame.

CNN is a Republican-owned enterprise, so is ABC, CBS and NBC... you have not been around the globe much, if you think the US has a "liberal" press or free-wheeling media.

the US press is 99% conservative, right-wing & controlled by right-wing & money interests, i.e., those coteries close to the bought hearts & lesser minds of politicians like Bush Sen. & Bush Jr. - both of whom are without graduate degrees & both got mediocre marks in their undergrad degrees ... but they know which side of the bread is buttered.

forget the Republican red herring that the US has a liberal or free media - that's utopia your thinking about & the Republican's are laughing themselves silly, watching you & 300 million Americans believing their fictive concoction about a press that is fair & hard for all sides of the political spectrum ... that's just a lie.

when that day comes, you'll hear about the people living under bridges in the US, not about McCain & his 7-10 luxury houses & how he doesn't know in which of them he lives.

No I don't think Obama is a messiah (& I'm offended when RepubliCONs call him that)...but I do think he cares a lot more for the REAL everyday people than John (I don't know how many houses I own) McCain. People who worry about how they're going to afford getting back & forth to work this week with gas prices so high. Who have to buy generic more than name brands because their grocery bills have doubled in the last 8 years. The kind of people who buy their socks at Wal-mart and can't REMOTELY imagine spending $300 G's on an outfit!
Sorry, but I don't want a reactionary, hot-tempered, war-hardened old man with 1 foot in the grave (who was caught singing "Bomb, bomb, Iran" on youtube) to have his finger on that red button at 3am. He'd probably push it just to go back to sleep! I want a man whose nature it is to intelligently think through a problem and approach it from all angles. Obama has the brains. Lets not forget that this man graduated from Harvard Law having been head of the Law Review. THE most prestigious position there is. AND he was the 1st black man to do it. McCain, by his own admission graduated 5th from the BOTTOM of his class in the Naval Academy. Not a candidate for Mensa to be sure. With all due respect, being a "POW" might have developed his character but it didn't earn him a degree. And lets not overlook the fact that McCain has a well-known reputation of being nasty when he's not agreed with. (again check out YouTube if you don't believe me) No wonder Bill O'Reilly worships at his altar...He sees himself in McCain.

Great. So now the king of the softball question, Charlie Gibson, is going to do an interview with Miss Sarah. I'm sure we'll learn all about what a great Mom she is and the family and all. Probably how tough she is and how easy it will be to rule Washington. No stupid waste of time on thought about policy for her, just kick folks while their down and tell them to "stop whinnin".

But what I think Americans really want (and deserve) to know is what she plans for Social Security, Medicare, education, repair our national road system and infrastructure generally, all of which are things that concern virtually all Citizens. I'd like to know if she's just another apologist for the Wall Street bunch and the the insurance industry who just "want to dip their beaks" into people's Social Security funds and rake off 30% from old folks on Medicare (just like the Mafia, take just a little).

And since W has exhausted the military and demonstrated that we don't have enough men (and women) to conquer the world how she expects to manage a smashmouth foreign policy. Does anyone think we can push the Russians (reStalinized thanks to Bush) out of Georgia? The tough guy foreign policy Bush ran doesn't work but McSame wants to keep it going.

And education? With huge systems like Louisville, KY, New Orleans, LA and others struggling what's the plan? Or do we just write off 50% of american kids and buy it from China and India? Republicans don't really like to spend money on ordinary folks for such luxuries as schooling (can't you people just teach 'em at home and let them go to Sunday School, we could cut taxes more and then we'll be responsible for nuthin').

Lot's of questions but I doubt Charlie has it in him to ask one. Sad but what one would expect from a corporate stooge like Gibson.

This election matters a great deal. Another four years of Republican (religous and coporate rule) and there won't be many good jobs left. Wal-Mart will be hiring though.

I'm an old retired guy who doesn’t have to work and I can honestly say it won't matter to me in the long run who wins this election. At my age any election I participate in could be my last. I do believe however that the current administration has been the worst in my lifetime (born during FDR). I don't think anyone can rationally deny that. We have had 8 years of corruption, unnecessary war and shredding of the Constitution. Over the weekend we reached the highest unemployment rate in 5 years and the deregulated Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had to be rescued by the taxpayers before they collapsed of their own accord. Now this party wants us to give them 4 more years so that John the "maverick" can fix Washington. ...like I was born yesterday.

If "small town working class" rust-belt voters and disgruntled Clinonistas in Ohio, Pa., Michigan and Indiana help re-elect the GOP then I for one don't want to hear anymore whining from them about their disappearing jobs and livelihoods, the high cost of college and gas, lack of health care etc. Let Johnnie's "patriotism" put food on your table. Go flip burghers!

Screw 'ya. Cling to your guns and religion. Pray to Jesus when you go hunting for a meal. Stay with that church and keep your weapon. You will need both the soup kitchen and the rifle. You will deserve what you get.

I got mine already. I live comfortably in the sunny South on a golf course, got my steady income, my "socialist" medicare and prescription drug coverage that you younger people wish you had but will never get under the Republicans. I sent my girls to college and they are successfully out on their own. The world won't run out of gas before I go and the planet won't get too hot.

A McCain election ain't gonna hurt me!

As Johnny Carson used to say - I upped my lifestyle - up yours!

God helps those who help themselves - if you're in deep doodoo economically and you vote Republican for their "values", you deserve it.

It is said Todd Palin is “quietly influential behind the scenes in Alaskan politics”. This really gets interesting, in that he is an employee of British Petroleum. I wonder how carefully he has been “vetted”? Could he be an Alaskan separatist?

Rick Davis has gone on record saying they won't let someone interview Sarah Palin who is not properly "deferential" So does that mean Charlie Gibson won't be asking any tough questions, like why seven witnesses recanted on their promise to testify in the Troopergate scandal one day after McCain campaign lawyers arrived in Alaska?

Look at the photos...those flags were NOT going to be trashed by the DNC, they were carefully rolled up by the convention workers and were going to be re-used (yeah, insert joke about recycling). The Republicans stole those flags and should be charged with theft.

Looks like the flags were just part of the picked up "trash" from the Democratic Convention. Go tell your story to someone else who might be more easily convinced. I'm not buying it. I did enjoy reading some of the other bloggers comments about the lack of respect that NoBama has for this country. I can't wait for McCain to kick his a**, so he will crawl back into the hole that he came out of.

I understand now why Palin has been under wraps from the media and not campaigning alone. She is preparing for this ABC Interview. I saw Palin on TV a few times over the past 3 days on the campaign trail with McCain. She doesn't say anything substantive about national issues other than drill in Alaska.

Most of the time she bashes Obama and talks up McCain on the basis of character.

What happened to the shining city upon the hill?

As a European with a long standing admiration of the American society, political tradition and electoral process, the past eight years has been a political and moral tragedy. It has become increasingly difficult to explain and motivate the U.S. neoconservative policy both domestic and abroad.

In Europe many people feels that the U.S. has gone morally bankrupt and those classic American virtues like tolerance, human rights, free press and strong diplomacy is no longer an American trade mark. In the wake of the 2000 election and 9/11, America has transformed into a society that painfully reminds many Europeans on now dissolved totalitarian regimes of the past. Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo reminds us all of the frailty of democracy and the importance of strong moral leadership in the free world.

I don’t think many believe this is still true about America today!
Moral standards are very important in American society/politics and something that the republicans have always used to define themselves as a party. President Reagan, whom I admire, opened the doors for the evangelicals during the 1980 presidential election where he made an alliance with Moral Majority. They gave him two-thirds of the white evangelical votes and they in turn demanded government legislation against pornography and abortion.

Since then the religious right has gained more and more influence within the GOP, twice securing the presidency for Mr. Bush. They have successfully swayed the party line from classic conservatism ideology towards moral principles founded on conservative Christian convictions.

I have had the great privilege to work and live in Washington in the mid 90-ties and I was there when the conservative crusader Mr. Starr went through every garbage can in the country with the ambition to impeach President Clinton. The untamed hatred towards President Clinton overshadowed the interest of the nation and the extremist right wing republicans almost succeeded with their plans to overthrow the President for having a pour set of moral values. America spent more tax money conducting Ken Starr's investigation of President Bill Clinton's affair with intern Monica Lewinsky, than they did in the investigation of Watergate and the Iran-Contra scandal combined.

It is however somewhat entertaining, if it wasn’t so tragic, to see how deep some of these men of high values and moral standard fall. I think most of us remember horror cabinet of Jim Bakker, Bob Barr, John Bolton, Louis Beres, Parker J. Bena and Mark Foley.

Now the republicans have chosen unknown and inexperienced white evangelical women, mother of five, from Alaska to run for VP. Why? Because McCaine desperately needs the support of the Evangelicals, who is more than a little skeptical toward his traditional conservative views. The fact that 18% of all votes cast for Bush in 2004 were white Evangelical votes makes essential for McCaine to forge an alliance if he wants to win the election in November.

Palin is welcomed with great enthusiasm by fellow Republicans who see her as a personification of the new Republican. She is a church going conservative Christian, against abortion and sex before marriage hence cannot support contraception. She believes in family values and prides herself on being a hokey mom with the qualities of a Pitt Bull. Now Palin is being accused of misusage of power, having an affair while married and on top her daughter accidently had sex before marriage and got pregnant. This however is alright as she is keeping the baby and is getting married at age 17. Ups! But this only ad to her popularity because it shows that she is from a “normal” family with “normal” problems.

It doesn’t matter that she is political novice and that there is a chance that she would have to step up as President in light of McCaines advanced age! 72.
I’m not saying that the Democrats are saints or better people than the Republicans; in my view the best American presidents were Republicans. But I really believe it’s time for something different In America …. Hope you all have a good election in November.

When did Dems de-evolve into Conspiracy Theorists on everything? "Oh, Gibson will have everything scripted!" as if ANY POLITICIAN goes on TV and does an interview without having some idea of the questions that are going to be asked.

I'm also really getting tired of hearing about the "superior intellect" of Dems from Dems. Anyone who thinks Obama is intelligent shows their own lack of said intelligence. The guy is barely above average -- "just smart enough to be dangerous," as they say. Listen to him talk for 10 minutes when he doesn't have a teleprompter in his face and you'll realize he's weak. Or try to read his incredibly poorly-written and narcissistic books, and you'll realize he's intellectually weak.

My IQ puts me in the top .000013% of all Americans and, without exception, the truly brilliant people I have met in this lifetime were conservative, not liberals. Liberals almost universally lack the ability to correctly reason things through to their logical conclusions, and Obama is no exception.

And before you start comparing him to Bush -- I'm no fan of Bush, either. But Obama isn't running against Bush. Obama is running against himself; and thus he loses my vote. I would rather vote for pretty much anyone else than vote for a Marxist-in-training.

THE Admiral SON.

In Oct. 26, 1967, the admiral's son while flying his 23rd mission over North Vietnam, once again fell from the sky, this time landing in the hands of a brutal enemy. He was beaten and bayoneted. His shoulder was smashed and his right calf was nearly perpendicular to his knee.
The severely wounded McCain was finally thrown on the back of a truck and hauled to the infamous Hanoi Hilton prison camp. Immediately, his captors began to interrogate him using sadistic methods they had perfected on hundreds of captured U.S. servicemen before him.

His interrogators demanded military information. When he refused, his guards kicked and pounded him mercilessly.
McCain admits that three to four days after he was captured, he promised the Vietnamese, "I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital."
McCain also admits that the Vietnamese rushed him to a hospital, but denies he was given "special medical treatment" because of his promise.
He claims he was given medical care normally unavailable to captured Americans only because the Vietnamese learned he was the son of Admiral John S. McCain, Jr., the soon-to-be commander of all U.S. forces in the Pacific including those fighting in Vietnam.

The Vietnamese figured that because POW McCain's father was of such high military rank that he was of royalty or the governing circle in the United States. Thereafter the communist bragged that they had captured "the crown prince"and treated him as a "special prisoner."

Less than two weeks after McCain was taken to a hospital, Hanoi's press began quoting him giving specific military information, including the name of the aircraft carrier on which he was based, numbers of U.S. pilots that had been lost, the number of aircraft in his flight, information about location of rescue ships and the order of which his attack was supposed to take place.
There is also evidence that McCain received "special" medical treatment from a Soviet physician.

After he was out of the hospital, McCain continued cooperating with the North Vietnamese for a period of three years. He made radio broadcasts for the communists and met with foreign delegations, including the Cubans. He was interviewed by at least two North Vietnamese generals one of whom was Vietnam's national hero, General Vo Nguyen Giap.

On June 4, 1969, a U.S. wire service story headlined "PW Songbird Is Pilot Son of Admiral," reported one of McCain's radio broadcasts: "Hanoi has aired a broadcast in which the pilot son of the United States commander in the Pacific, Adm. John McCain, purportedly admits to having bombed civilian targets in North Vietnam and praises medical treatment he has received since being taken prisoner.
McCain says he violated the Code of Conduct only when the North Vietnamese brutally tortured him. He further claims that he was so distraught afterwards that he tried to commit suicide. He has never explained why his "aid to the enemy" continued for more than three years.

Even though there are no reports in the public record from other POWs who witnessed McCain's claims of torture and heroics or his attempted suicide, the American media has accepted his version of events word for word, no questions asked.

Yet, the same press that transformed the admiral's son into an "incredible war hero--an inspiration to all Americans," vilified the two grunts.
Comparing the incidents surrounding the fates of three POWs,' who collaborated with the enemy, makes one question why two faced possible execution for treason, while the third won acclaim as a hero fit to be President of the United States.
Once more, Lady Luck had smiled on John McCain . . . or was it the admiral?

John McCain is being hailed by the press as a "genuine war hero." But is he a war hero in the conventional sense like Audie Murphy and John Glenn?
Or is his "war hero" status the creation of a very slick publicity campaign that plays on flag, duty, honor and country?
For sure, McCain has the fruitsalad a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars , two Commendation medals plus two Purple Hearts and a dozen service gongs.
On a purely medal count basis, he outweighs Murphy and Glenn, who both for years repeatedly performed extraordinary deeds on the ground or in the air against an armed enemy.
McCain's valor awards are based on what happened in 1967, when during his 23d mission over Vietnam, he was shot down, seriously injured, captured and then spent 5 1/2 brutal years as a POW.
In an attempt to find out exactly what the man did to earn these many hero awards, I asked his Senate office three times to provide copies of the narratives for each medal. I'm still waiting.
I next went to the Pentagon. Within a week, I received a recap of his medals and many of the narratives that give the details of what he did.
None of the awards, less the DFC, were for heroism over the battlefield where he spent no more than 20 hours. Two Naval officers described the awards as "boilerplate" and "part of an SOP medal package given to repatriated (Vietnamera) POWs."
McCain's Silver Star narrative for the period 27 October 1967 the day after he was shot down to 8 December 1968 reads: "His captors… subjected him to extreme mental and physical cruelties in an attempt to obtain military information and false confessions for propaganda purposes. Through his resistance to those brutalities, he contributed significantly towards the eventual abandonment…" of such harsh treatment by the North Vietnamese.
Yet in McCain's own words just four days after being captured, he admits he violated the U.S. Code of Conduct by telling his captors "O.K, I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital."
A Vietnam vet detractor says, "He received the nation's third highest award, the Silver Star, for treason. He provided aid and comfort to the enemy!"
The rest of his valor awards issued automatically every year while he was a POW read much like the Silver Star. More boilerplate often repeating the exact same words. An example: "By his heroic endeavors, exceptional skill, and devotion to duty, he reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Naval Service and the United States Armed Forces."
Yet McCain's conduct while a POW negates these glowing comments. The facts are that he signed a confession and declared himself a "black criminal who performed deeds of an air pirate." This statement and other interviews he gave to the Communist press press were used as propaganda to fan the flames of the antiwar movement.
Accounts by McCain and other writers tell of the horror he endured: relentlessly beatings, torture, broken limbs. All inflicted during savage interrogations. Yet no other POW was a witness to these accounts. 
A former POW says "No man witnessed another man during interrogations… We relied on each other to tell the truth when a man was returned to his cell."
The U.S. Navy says two eyewitnesses are required for any award of heroism. But for the valor awards McCain received, there are no eyewitnesses, less himself and his captors. And they're not talking.
Our POWs in Vietnam were treated appallingly. The Viets would either break a POW or kill him. POWs provided info beyond name, rank and serial number or they didn't come back.
Based on these stalwart men's horrific experiences, the Code of Conduct has been changed. A POW says, "Now the training is to give them something… don't risk permanent damage to health, mind or body." 
McCain refused an early release. An act of valor? Three former POWs told me he was ordered to turn it down by his U.S. POW commander and he "just followed orders."
McCain certainly doesn't appear to be a war hero by conventional standards, but rather a tough survivor whose handlers are overplaying the war hero card.
David H. Hackworth died in June 2005, he was a much-decorated and highly unconventional former career Army officer who became a combat legend in Vietnam. Col. Hackworth received 78 combat awards — including a Distinguished Service Cross, a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and eight Purple Hearts — during his 25-year military career which spanned the Korean and Vietnam wars..

Yes, Babs, the postings can be mean on both sides -- and both sides, Dems and Repubs are to blame to some extent for the policies that are tearing this country apart - and for money-driven politics, the lack of intelligent dialogue or bipartisan solutions. Unfortunately, we're not going to be able to wait until 2012 to make a decision or have a perfect choice, and I hope you won't do that either. I've studied the overall situation at least as carefully as you've studied the candidates' positions on education, and have come to these conclusions: the future in the form of an energy crisis, a global warming crisis and an economic crisis are coming straight at us in a way that will make the story of the $75K tax-free maid irrelevant - she'll be hurting by this time next year - and these things are going to knock us and our family's lives sideways, particularly if inflexible, old line people are in power. To me, it's crystal clear that McCain and Palin represent the policies and politics of the past. Jees - he voted with the incompetent Bush 90+% of the time! Obama isn't perfect, but it's equally clear that he's intelligent, represents much larger change and is the only shot we have at dodging some very major bullets coming our way.

As a former Hillary supporter. I was excited and switched my vote immediately to Palin when she was brought on, but after waiting to hear from her for so long. I'm going to support Obama/Biden because she has waited too too long to talk to the media and it shows me that she is not ready to be Commander and Chief. I'm sure Obama will make Hillary an Ambassador or something and I realize a ticket with the both of them might alienate white males which a big vote

She left a city that was doing fine before she got there in a financial disaster when she left to the tune of a 22 million dollar defect. She was a terrible mayor and they are still trying to recover from what she did.

The postings are making me crazy. Both sides are just mean. I'm staying home and just waiting out until 2012. One side doesn't have anything to offer and the other side seems to want handouts. When we have a situation where taxes are onerous a black (this is not racist it is a term used many times like black hole which now has been said to be racist)market develops. I was talking to my neighbors cleaning lady (who is illegal and I was able to converse in spanish) who has a cleaning crew and tells me she is now making over $75,000 per year (tax free since it is cash basis only). Only in America.

JanW- Obama did work on ethics reform with McCain then he back tracked when he caved to those around him. I think he can make a difference if he were more independent. Education, sorry I looked into that and BOTH candidates are dismal. I am passionate about education and will look at things with a fine tooth comb. Neither candidate has done much. I'm bilingual and I was really pissed off about the Merci Beaucoup comment. Tutoring at risk kids here in Southern California (I volunteer for at risk kids, advocate for special needs children) I am distressed that those children in hispanic areas not only can't speak english, they can't speak spanish. I have paid out of my own pocket for many resources for these children. The Democratic legislature here tell me that having to choose between educating a child and feeding them they would rather feed. Understandably but we can't feed and educate every illegal family. My family came to this country through channels and my father had 3 jobs and we NEVER took welfare. I put myself through college with 2 jobs. I feel beaten up by both parties. Senator Obama wants to give healthcare to both legal and illegal. McCain also wants amnesty for those who have come illegally. My husband and I pay $900 a month for our family coverage. Universal healthcare similar to Canada means that those w/o insurance would be covered but those with special needs such as my children will not be able to have the therapies they need covered. I feel very squeezed. Public agencies (govt.) will not give services to my children because they can "speak". Many keep talking about getting college covered- I'm trying to get mine through elementary school. I would hope that between community colleges and other resources college students today can do it w/o increasing our taxes. I rented a room while going to college from a 75 year old woman who had about 3 bloody marys every morning. I did what I had to do. It doesn't seem that either candidate has any answers.

What do you mean who would work for "the man"? Who else are you going to work for? White people hold almost all of the decision-making authority in this country. White people are in charge of doling out opportunities. And McCain probably will let Mexicans in because business owners love imported laborers with no rights. Mexicans will work for $3 or $4 dollars an hour. McCain will defend the ruling class, and the ruling class wants cheap labor.

Every speech that night took jabs at Obama. Her speech especially was riddled with anti-Obama barbs. That was one of the main reasons she spoke.

I do not find it offensive. I was embarassed for the likes of Giuliani, Thompson, and Palin pandering to the partisan crowd with their simplistic little digs at someone who in my opinion is much more gifted than all of them put together.

It was a low rent and disappointing playground pee'ing contest they perpetrated. I'm surprised we didn't get a "You're Mama's so fat that she..." from Sarah.

I guess she wanted to appear as presidential timber so they cut that joke from her repertoire.

My point was your claim she was objectively illustrating a fact in comapring the experience level between a mayor and a community organizer.

it was obama's first job out of college (after his first degree - he then went on to law school, state office and like, oh you know, the US Senate). at the time obama was community organising (doing ridiculous things like helping the urban poor find jobs,) palin had a job as a sports reporter for the so-called 'liberal elite' media. her executive experience in the small town of wasilla is laughable and limited mainly to taking federal money for her pet projects and trying to ban books that didn't sit with her religious extremist views. oh, and joining a party that was trying to get alaska to secede from the union.

then her campaign whines about being mistreated by the media - 'playing the victim' and the 'gender card' whenever it suits their purposes - yet none of the media mentioned her speech was made up of a constant stream of (independantly verified) lies and misrepresentations.

Apparently the media wants to get even for the Swift-Boaters’ successful torpedoing of John Kerry in 2004 because they are by the dozens every day promulgating lies about the career and life of Governor Sarah Palin. I recently posted a piece on the lies, exaggerations and misbegotten assumptions of a Baltimore Sun columnist and it got me to thinking to try and gather one thread rebutting the media’s ever evolving negative memes against this strong woman. From unproven claims of infidelity, to claims she is a book banner and a negligent Mother, the media have been smearing this woman daily since she stepped out onto the national stage. One recent Politico attack on Palin was made up solely of the claim that she was once mean to someone… yes, Politico actually was trying to say that their report was serious.

In any case, I’d like to present and knock down some of the swift-skirt attacks the media is launching. So, in no particular order…

Lie- Palin Slashed spending for teen moms from $5 million dollars to $3.9 million in the Alaska state budget.

Truth- Palin actually increased by three-fold the budget for the Covenant House teen pregnancy programs. What she “cut” was the Covenant House’s request for $5 million! Palin’s $3.9 million was still a massive increase from the previous budget.

Lie- Palin belonged to the Alaska Independence Party, a group that wants Alaska to secede from the United States.

Truth- The Governor’s political registration shows that she has been a Republican since 1982 and she has never been a member of the AIP, though he husband has in the past.

Lie- Palin wants Creationism taught in school alongside of the Theory of Evolution.

Truth- Palin has spoken in favor of open discussion in the classroom of the two competing ideas, but has never spoken for, advocated for, or tried to make a policy that would make Alaska’s schools add creationism to their curriculum. Palin quote: “I don’t think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class. It doesn’t have to be part of the curriculum.”

Lie- Palin was so mired in controversy as a mayor that she was almost recalled while mayor of Wasilla.

Truth- Only a small number of Wasilla residents supported the recall effort and the idea died stillborn.

Lie- Palin cheated on her husband with her husband’s former business partner. This man had his divorce papers sealed to hide Palin’s affair.

Truth- Turns out it is untrue and the reason the man wanted his divorce papers sealed is to prevent the media from intruding into his life and the life of his young son.

Lie- Palin faked her recent pregnancy to cover for an out-of-wedlock birth of her teenaged daughter.

Truth- Many eyewitnesses and photos easily debunk this story. And even if you didn’t believe that, the fact that Palin’s daughter is pregnant NOW makes it physically impossible that she could have had a baby earlier in the year.

Lie- Palin was a supporter of Pat Buchanan when he ran for president in 1999.

Truth- Palin actually supported Steve Forbes in 1999 and was the co-chair on his Alaska campaign.

Lie- Palin is hiding her real religion from the public. She claims to be “just” a Christian, but is really a Pentecostal.

Truth- Palin left the Pentecostal Church she belonged to in Alaska 6 years ago.

Lie- Palin wanted a long, long list of books to be banned in the Wassilla library.

Truth- Palin did ask the library about what the process might be to ban a book, but the long list of books being circulated to “prove” she wanted books banned is really a list of all the books that have been banned at one time or another over the last 100 years. In fact, as far as the Harry Potter Books on that list goes, some of them came out after Palin left the office of Mayor of Wasilla.

Lie- Palin is lying when she says she sold the state’s jet plane on ebay.

Truth- Palin never said she sold the jet on ebay. She says she put it up to sell on ebay. And she did. But it didn’t sell there. The state sold it in a private sale to Larry Reynolds.

These are just some of the lies that the media are trying to sell us to swift-skirt Sarah Palin. They cannot stand to see a strong woman like Sarah who actually got to the top by her own efforts… as opposed to some female Senator who got to where she is because her philandering, but powerful husband paved the way for her.

why do people call wasilla a city? in my country, a town can only call itself a city when it's got over 200,000 people in it. by that rationale, wasilla is a small town.

The Wallace speech I cited was given in 1964. The Alabama State Archives credits Gov. Wallace with the July 4,1964 speech. He was wounded on May 15,1972. He abandoned his bid for the Democratic nomination for President. He spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair and died in 1998.

The latest rockers to tell the Republicans to cease spinning their albums are the women from Heart, who were chagrined to hear their song "Barracuda" play at the Republican convention as Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hit the stage. Palin, a star high school basketball point guard, was nicknamed "Sarah Barracuda." The official Heart website states

that "Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart have informed the McCain/Palin Campaign that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease-and-desist notice to not use one of Heart's classic songs 'Barracuda,' as the congratulatory theme for Sarah Palin. The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission. We have asked the Republican campaign not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored."

And on Entertainment Weekly's website

the Wilson sisters add that "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late '70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

Longtime politicians always bring baggage to a campaign, and Biden is no exception.

Among the other grist he may provide for John McCain's mill:


The allegation of plagiarism that drove Biden from the 1988 presidential race.
The history of Biden's son, Hunter, as a Washington lobbyist. Since 2002, the firm Hunter Biden co-founded has represented a major constituent of Joe Biden's, the University of Delaware, which has collected millions in federal funding.
Donations to Biden's campaigns totaling more than $200,000 in the past two decades from Delaware-based MBNA, the credit card company, and a similar amount from trial lawyers, including Richard "Dickie" Scruggs, one of the three men implicated in the Mississippi bribery scheme.
Since 1989, lawyers and law firms have contributed $6.5 million to Biden, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan private group that tracks money in politics.

Recent rhetoric
Among the problems the Obama-Biden campaign faces is some of Biden's recent political rhetoric in which he tears down Obama. One Biden moment from the Democratic primaries that promises to be a Republican favorite: Biden's comment a year ago that he didn't think Obama was ready to be president.

Biden's speaking style may resonate with many Americans, but his mouth has also gotten him trouble over the years.

He brilliantly and humorously skewered Rudy Giuliani, saying, "There's only three things he mentions in a sentence: a noun and a verb and 9/11. I mean, there's nothing else."

But Biden spoke without thinking when he called Obama "clean" and said that customers cannot go into 7-Elevens unless they have a slight Indian accent...."

Here's your link - Readbetweentheeyes - and in any case, anyone who has ever run an organization or a business (I've run both) would *never* intentionally throw out thousands of flags like that because they are a significant cost, apart from the patriotic value. It simply doesn't make sense. It's not as though there aren't going to be many more rallies before the election. The Dems story is much more credible to me - while the McCain story fits right into the Limbaugh wingnut belief space for people such as yourself.

Nor has her life-style ever been anything like that of native Alaskans. Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters. She's smart. Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents. During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign. Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative". During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents. The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren't enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn't even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later--to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing. While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once. These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city. As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state. In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today's surplus, borrow for needs. She's not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren't generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren't evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them. While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin's attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day. Sarah complained about the "old boy's club" when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of "old boys". Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal--loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State's top cop (see below). As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla's Police Chief because he "intimidated" her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska's top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it's pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn't fire her sister's ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support. She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn't like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness. Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her. When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the "old boys' club" when she dramatically quit, exposing this man's ethics violations (for which he was fined). As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the "bridge to nowhere" after it became clear that it would be unwise not to. As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects--which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance--but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as "anti-pork". She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative. Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah. They call her "Sarah Barracuda" because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah's mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her. As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package of legislation known as "AGIA" that forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her drum. Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to global warming. She campaigned "as a private citizen" against a state initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State's lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior's decision to list polar bears as threatened species. McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being President. There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more knowledgeable and experienced than she. However, there's a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it. CLAIM VS FACT *"Hockey mom": true for a few years *"PTA mom": true years ago when her first-born was in elementary school, not since *"NRA supporter": absolutely true *social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships (said she did this because it was unconsitutional). *pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to promote it. *"Pro-life": mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life legislation *"Experienced": Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska. No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city administrator to run town of about 5,000. *political maverick: not at all *gutsy: absolutely! *open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at explaining actions. *has a developed philosophy of public policy: no *"a Greenie": no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR. *fiscal conservative: not by my definition! *pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built streets to early 20th century standards. *pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on residents *pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city government in Wasilla's history. *pro-labor/pro-union. No. Just because her husband works union doesn't make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim that she is pro-labor/pro-union. WHY AM I WRITING THIS? First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting programs in the schools. If you google my name (Anne, last name redacted Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local government, education, and PTA/parent organizations. Secondly, I've always operated in the belief that "Bad things happen when good people stay silent". Few people know as much as I do because few have gone to as many City Council meetings. Third, I am just a housewife. I don't have a job she can bump me out of. I don't belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will cost me somehow in the future: that's life. Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah's attempt at censorship. Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to say anything because they were somehow vulnerable. CAVEATS I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor) from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of Wasilla, and I can't recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible for a private person to get any info out of City Hall--they are swamped. So I can't verify my numbers. You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the population of Wasilla, ranging from my "about 5,000", up to 9,000. The day Palin's selection was announced a city official told me that the current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was 5,460. 1.But that’s not the tune she was singing when she was running for governor, particularly not when she was standing before the Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce asking for their vote (where the bridge was to be)
2.When she did cancel the project Alaska kept the money and spent it on other transportation projects.

Energy independence is at the top of McCain's list??? Is that why he's voted against every alternative energy proposal he's seen in 26 years? He's voted against alternative energy proposals 23 times, but supports big oil? Is his new love of energy independence the reason his tax proposal continues to provide huge tax breaks for Exxon and other oil companies? If he's not done anything until now, and voted against every proposal that has been put in front of him, what makes you think he will now turn towards efforts to make the country energy independent? McCain wants to continue to try to drill out of this----check where he gets his campaign contributions. That might explain his positions. Of course he needs to come to the party (albeit pretty late....) and preach energy independence to try to get elected, but he will continue to be beholden to big oil, and he will continue to advocate for them. The guy who is "no friend of lobbyists"? Check his campaign staff---they are all lobbyists...... Yea, a real maverick

As a historical coincidence, a leader in American Terrorism, Bill Ayres, a leading member of the Weather Underground, a terrorist organization of a generation ago. had an interview published in the NY Times the morning of 9/11/, before his ideological progeny killed thousands of innocent Americans.

Note that he is married to Bernadine Dohrn, who plead guilty her participation in terrorist support groups. They are also raising the child of terrorists parents, who are in jail for their vicious acts.

Here are key statements from Ayres in the 9/11/01 NY Times article:

"Mr. Ayers, who in 1970 was said to have summed up the Weatherman philosophy as: ’’Kill all the rich people. Break up their cars and apartments. Ayers's interview with the New York Times about his book was published on September 11, 2001, and opens with his statement, "I don't regret setting bombs, I feel we didn't do enough." The interview also includes his reaction (in his book) to Emile De Antonio's 1976 documentary film about the Weathermen: "He was 'embarrassed by the arrogance, the solipsism, the absolute certainty that we and we alone knew the way. The rigidity and the narcissism." Ayers stated that by "no regrets" he meant that he didn't regret his efforts to oppose the Vietnam War, and that "we didn't do enough" meant that efforts to stop the war were obviously inadequate as it dragged on for a decade. New Politics reviewer Jesse Lemisch has contrasted Ayers's recollections with those of other Weathermen and alleged serious factual errors.

In the fall of 2006, Ayers was asked not to attend a progressive educators' conference on the basis that the organizers did not want to risk an association with his past.

Babs---you should check Obama's record. He championed the largest ethics reform legislation since Watergate--and got it passed shortly after joining the US Senate. He also worked across the aisle to secure nuclear waste and keep it out of the hands of terrorists. He worked on dozens of pieces of legislation,92 of which were blocked by the Republicans--including things like corecting disparity in wages, bills to support renewal energy sources (all voted against by McCain). In the state senate he sponsored and passed legislation to provide health care to children, to improve educational opportunities for children and about 2 dozen other major initiatives. McCain, on the other hand has voted against alternative energy proposals 23 times, voted against tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of the country, but is now for it (cutting taxes for the wealthy by $125,000,but not cutting taxes for over 100 million workers, and providing tax cuts to companies that send jobs overseas). McCain, like Bush, would continue to drive the country into deeper and deeper debt, by providing tax breaks to the tune of $50billion to the wealthiest individuals and companies.

If there were any legislation I could point to except his vetoing the Born Alive bill. If Obama had been in the Senate and had some bills that I could point at and say "that's what I want" but he doesn't. When people say they don't know who he is that is what most of us mean. Don't put us down or make snide remarks. There are many of us undecideds because there is nothing we can point to. I have been to both Sacramento (my state) and D.C. and spoken to legislators and at this time there is not one person I can say I trust. The last time I was in Sacramento I went into a legislators office who had pictures of Cesar Chavez and had Mexican flags- his office his right to do that- but it didn't instill in me a trust that he would do something for ALL people. I'm trying to see whom I could believe in and also having people target a 17 year old girl is not helping clarify issues. 17 year old pregnant girls happen all the time. Most of the time most parents don't even know since they can have an abortion without a parent's consent in most states.

The McCain campaign is "politically brilliant". They have reinvigorated their campaign to a new level, gotten "rock star" media coverage and avoided talking about how to fix the #1 concern of voters, the economy by simply naming Sarah Palin as McCain's running mate.

Shame on most of you (for falling for this political gimmick)!

It will be interesting to see how Palin handles questions like "Venezuela is hosting Russian naval exercises in the Carribean, what should America do?" or "Iran is hold 3-day war games, she America be concerned?" or "Pakistan has a new president, how will America's foreign policy change?" or "What can America due in the Russia-Georgia conflict?" or "Is the federal government action appropriate in bailing out Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac?"

This is just a same sample of the type of questions Sarah Palin will get in the coming weeks. Let's see how she fairs with being fast-tracked tutored and trying to care for a 5-month old Down Syndrome baby and caring for a 17-year daughter who is 5-months pregnant and a 6-year old daughter.

My guess is that the children will be neglected. I get the impression that Todd Palin isn't the type to be sitting around taking care of kids.

Biden is a stupid a** hole. Comments on Indians was unnecessary and uncalledfor. Indians are the most successful immigrants in US. Most of them are more academically qualified and hardworking scientsts, doctors, engineers and professionals.

Sarah Palin did say she would be an advocate for special needs kids but I am always cautious. I have 2 boys with autism. Talk to a mom who lives in the Phillipines from Canada who can't move back because their medical system does not pay for treatments. At least I get something- it's very expensive and we're nearly broke even though we are a 2 professional household. Rich Santorum a Republican was going to pass legislation regarding autism but he was blocked by the Democratic congress. Bobby Jindal has passed extensive autism coverage in Louisiana- New York who has the most liberal legislators has the least coverage of autism of most states. Don't get me wrong- I don't care who I have to back to get some help. In California it is a Democrat who has passed one of the best Parity laws in the country. But PLEASE don't tell me about Democrats being the party that cares. I haven't seen it on either side. Obama will probably say we have to subsidize college even further then throw it to the states to pay for. In California I'm already dying here. We had to pay a $30K FEE(aka tax) when we sold our house to move from one county to another. We pay 10% state income as well as a heavy load for Feds. In general our load is about 50% when you add it all up.

Ever since John McCain chose a WOMAN to be the Vice President of the United States, the Media and the Democrat surrogates are asking a rather “shallow” question regarding WOMEN Voters. They’re asking the question…”Are WOMEN Voters that Stupid?” In other words….”Does John McCain and the Republican Party REALLY think that because he selected a WOMAN (Sarah Palin) to be his running mate, that WOMEN Voters will vote for the McCain/Palin Ticket in droves?” Hmmmm…


With this STUPID question now broadcasted all over the place by the Media and the Democrats, I can’t help but to draw an analysis of this “CRITICAL SEXIST” question (“Are WOMEN Voters that Stupid?”) to a “CRITICAL RACIST” question (“Are BLACK Voters that Stupid?”) It seems to be “Taboo” or “Offensive” for the Media and the Democrats to ask THAT question! But it’s OK for the Media to denigrate WOMEN Voters by asking “Are WOMEN Voters that Stupid?” WOMEN Voters, I guess, are “Fair Game” to the Democrats and the Media to label them as STUPID. And, sadly, so are the BLACK Voters.


It could be “fairly” deducted from the Democrats and the Media in asking this question about WOMEN, that if John McCain had selected a BLACK Vice-Presidential running mate, that the Democrats and the Media would be then asking this “shallow” question about BLACK Voters. Do the Democrats and the Media think that “both” WOMEN and BLACKS are Stupid? Apparently so!


It’s a shame that the Democrats and the Media have “stereo-typed” and “categorized” WOMEN and BLACK Voters in this manner; as if they can’t THINK or DECIDE for themselves who would best serve them as President and Vice-President. And if you listen to the Democrats and the Media…and you’re a WOMAN Voter …..“ONLY” a DEMOCRAT WOMAN can break through the “Glass Ceiling”. And if you’re a BLACK Voter, “ONLY” a BLACK DEMOCRAT can bridge the Racial Divide. So is it now “fair” to assume that the Democratic Party and the Media “touted” Barack Obama for President just to carry the BLACK Vote, simply because he “looks” BLACK? And is it really the TRUTH that the Democratic “platform” is the ONLY Platform that is “Inclusive” to BLACK and WOMEN Voters? Not by their deeds, that’s for sure. And when they ask this very STUPID question (Are WOMEN that Stupid? – because the Republicans chose a WOMAN VP), are the Democrats and the Media now saying that BLACK Voters are Stupid, too?!?! That is supposed to “go against” what the Democrats and the Media promote. Isn’t it? The REALITY is that BLACK Voters and WOMEN Voters are in BOTH Parties! To “assume” that they’re not, is REALLY, REALLY Stupid!


What is now happening is that the Republican Party is the one “coming out” as the party of “Reform and Inclusivity” (CHANGE!). The Democrats “rejected” their WOMAN (Hillary Clinton), thus sending the message of disenfranchising of the WOMEN Voters (except for maybe Pro-Choice women). And yet they still have the “gall” to ask this “CRITICAL SEXIST” question…”Are WOMEN Voters that Stupid?”….all because of Sarah Palin being selected as the Republican VP!?!?! I just can’t understand the logic of asking this STUPID question! Does the Media and the Democrats seriously believe that they have “cornered the market” on WOMEN and BLACK Voters? I don’t think so. I am compelled to blog, even though never have before, As a mother, I can't believe this woman is embracing the idea of a marriage for her daughter to a guy like Levi Johnston. I would rather my daughter just have the baby (I am "pro-choice," but am NOT "pro-abortion") and support my child with the raising of her child, than have an obviosly adolescent jock as a son-in-law. Nepatriott- as a mom w/special needs children let me tell you about cuts. Most states have done what Palin has done. Otherwise general ed. would be crippled. The Feds mandate the ADA. Problem is that the FEDS have not fully funded it like they promised and are supposed to do. States are dying under the mandates by the FEDS, it creates a schism between General Ed. and Special Ed. We need to DEMAND that the Feds fund what they are supposed to. I just am amazed when they talk about funding kids for college when they don't even fund what they are legally supposed to do. If the FEDS were to just fund what they were supposed to do we would have tons of money for our schools and wouldn't have to worry about the shortage in the individual states budgets. Personally went to my state's legislature to talk about special needs. Neither Democrats nor Republicans really care. They talk about education because it's a hot topic amongst the general population. When Obama talks about funding college my first reaction is asking him why his majority held Senate is not paying for special needs kids like they are supposed to.

No democrat has ever taken the white house without PA. Which has a high proportion of Democratic voters. Rendell says he can not guarantee PA in this election to Obama. The pundits say if Obama doesn't take PA he will LOSE. My county has a high proportion of blacks but Hillary still took the county 4 to 1. Obama has spent more time in PA then in Chicago yet I know atleast 200 prior Hillary supporters who have flipped to McCain. Obama's comments in San Francisco about PA voters will cost him PA.

Stephen- Don't be so narrow in your interpretation of the scriptures. God trumps husband. Also in Christianity husbands are told to love their wives as Christ loved the church, which is die to self- which means put your own desires away to what is best. If you are a Christian and not married I would tell women to stay away from you. If you're married- my prayers go out to your wife. Also, Old Testament Biblically speaking, parents are not held to the actions of their children, bad or good. There is something that God gives all- free will.

I believe Palin when she says that she is deeply religious and holds those beliefs above all others. So with that said it is important that we vet her husband also. After all she vowed to "obey" him in her wedding vows. So would his wishes prevail over all other duties. That is the Christian viewpoint, the man is in charge.

Did it occur to you, that if Alaska secedes from the union, your support via your speech to the AIP , as governor, could be construed as destroying the union?
When you attempted to ban books from the town library when you were mayor, what made you think you had the right to interfere with the librarian that way?
You say you dont like earmarks, but you hired a known earmark connection, to help your town, and after that, every year you were in office you received more and more earmark money. How do you explain that?
When you left office as mayor of a town of less than 9,000 your town was in debt $22 million but when you took over there was no debt. How do you explain that?
Do you accept that Christianity is just one of several religions in the USA and that no religious point of view should be taught in schools, such as creation in 7 days?
Do you agree with the sermon you heard in church in which it was stated that Israel is being punished by God for not converting to Christianity?

Gibson's career is on the line with this one. He is still reeling from professional and public criticism of his impotent questioning in the debates.

It's bad enough he is groveling his way to AK. (Anywhere else, there would be unsympathetic crowds booing him and Palin.) If he doesn't ask some substantive (not even to say "hard") questions, he will be shamed by the public and by his peers.

Palin can't hide from the issues forever. Watch for her popularity to fall off like yesterday's pizza as she either dodges the real questions or provides wholly uniformed answers to them. Either way, her game is up.

Palin herself essentially said the only difference between her and a pit bull is lipstick. If we are to take her at her word, it means she's dangerous, likes to chase cats and bite people. Most of all, it means she should be kept on a leash, which could explain her unavailability to reporters. I do think the additional measure of following her with a pooper scooper would be well advised since she's obviously full of something we don't want on our lawns.

I'm sure that ABC and Charlie Gibson will make sure that the Palin interview goes well for her. Taping it ahead and giving the McCain camp editing rights make this interview about as informative as the speeches she reads from a teleprompter.

On the other hand, Senator Obama has been willing to sit down with ultraconservative Bill O'Reilly.

I can't believe anyone (even diehard neocon lemmings) think this woman is remotely ready to be President.

the real questions, the ones that speak to her suitability to be VPOTUS, are about troopergate, earmarks, lobbyists and how knowledgeable she is about key policy areas.

hopefully the interview isn't the celebrity fluff piece i expect it to be.

We all saw what a joke Gibson was during the debate in which he asked questions about flag pins and took an hour to get to anything substantive.

Gibson is a joke, Palin knows it, and that's why she picked him.

Don't look for any tough questioning of Palin by Gibson. And Palin has so much to answer for: her incompetence, her hypocrisy, her extremism, her lies... it's staggering that this woman has been nominated to be vice president by Mc Cain.

Why is the new Dick Cheney in drag hiding from the media? I guess she doesn’t have anything of substance to say or her real comments will take down the Radical Right. Amazing that the woman you believe is capable of walking into the Presidency at a moments notice is not capable of answering questions from the media. I want a woman who can answer the questions without having to reply on speechwriters ~ maybe a woman with a mind of her own ~ not a Stepford wife for Vice-President. 4)I heard that she was really 34 and not in her 40s, because she still looks way HOT for her age. And if she is if she's had plastic surgery. Come on, all those kids and she still looks that good!!!

I challenge Gibson and all of the other reporters to really investigate and question closely someone who wants to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, and with McCain's age this is vital.

Ask her about:
troopergate - she reportedly had a trooper fired who was getting divorced from her sister
the chief of police reportedly fired because she didn't like him
her husband's membership in some fringe group that wants Alaska to secede from the union and her appearances/speeches at that group's meetings
her husband's position in the oil industry
her extreme positions that are out of mainstream America
no abortion, not ever, even if the life of the girl/woman is at stake, even if it's a case of rape/incest
abstinence only education
creationism taught in schools instead of science
her close ties with Sen. Stevens under investigation for corruption
her support for that pork barrel project of all pork barrel projects -- the bridge to nowhere -- she supported it until she found out there was such a ruckus it wouldn't get built
her experience (or lack thereof)
her denigration of community work, (how about the churches that do community work and organizing?)

Okay, now reporters go out and really do your jobs!!

Barely 17 yr-old daughter confides to parents, her high school beau of 3 months uses/used no birth control (i.e., condom - taboo anyway forbidden in their god-fearing, überchristian dwelling).

we're proud of you two youngsters, no birth control, no sex education .. you're good kids, comment from mom (dad says nothing). parents decide the teens (their 17yr daughter & 18yr beau) shall of course marry - after one condomless encounter subsequent to MacDo's & Batman film. one strike & you're church married.

Healthy baby, frustrated young couple, 5 yrs down the bumpy Alaska road to married life, divorce arranged by a Republican Wasilla lawyer. And the child goes where?

Tom Brokaw showed 2 Obama Biden commercials/speeches railing against John McCain's association with lobbyists. Biden sat smiling. Then Tom takes out today's front page of the Wilmington Del. paper- an article detailing how's Biden's son Hunter is a lobbyist who received $500,000 from MBNA the credit card giant, just as Biden voted against most Democrats and Obama to support the credit card industry's position on the Bankruptcy Reform Act. The NY times ran the same story 2 weeks ago. Hypocrisy is so sad, and by the way-
"That's not the kind of change America deserves".

Palin is the self-proclaimed "pit bull". She has no excuse if she wants national office but to answer questions everything a vice president deals with -- health, education, taxes, foreign affairs, dealing with the other party, dealing with foreign leaders, war and peace, conflicts of interest, previous legal issues and scandals etc. Any well educated American should be capable of speaking to most of these issues. She wants the national office so there is no complaining about questions.

The press has the right to question and to follow-up till the answer is clear for the public. The free market of ideas will have the candidate who is best able to handle things come out on top. She is not only not a real seller in that market now, by ducking the press she is not even in the real game. That means the GOP ticket is really just one person -- McCain.

Keep the pressure on Palin to compete for the White House on the merits not on personality and phony imagery by answering questions.

Under pressure for being shielded for questioning, Sarah Palin has a agreed to sit down with Charles Gibson of ABC’s “World News Tonight,” according to an ABC News official.

No other interviews are scheduled. It will be the first TV interview for Palin since she was named 10 days ago as running mate to John McCain. It took Dan Quayle one day, Ferraro 6. Sarah should make up for her ducking the media.

All three real candidates were on the media today -- Obama, Biden and McCain. No Palin. The smiling critic of the GOP convention is too elite perhaps to answer to the national media. Its easy to read someone else's speech and be a smart aleck. That's hardly real American.

Demonstrate some people power. Post questions for Sarah Palin that should be asked by the press, so that she will be forced to come forward with answers. Shame her and the establishment media by getting a hundred thousand posters who demand answers now. Show them up.

CNN's vicious attack dog Campbell Brown must be mad she was not the chosen one, so she will have to find a bone to chew on.

It is hilarious to watch the liberal media shocked, mad and confused about the choice of Sarah for the republican VP position. Their vile attacks on Sarah reveal their anger and frustration over the maverick move of John McCain.

Barack's greatest mistake was to choose an old Washington insider as Joe Biden, and reject and ignore the choice of 18 million democrats who had remained loyal to the democratic party if Hillary Clinton would had been chosen for VP.

this is a bad joke. obama's been continually bashed in the media since he started campaigning and constantly asked about trivial things like his lapel pin, instead of allowing him to set the record straight about his record and policy. why does palin deserve special treatment? she's under investigation for abusing her office - do voters not see that as an important issue when choosing their next leaders?

is it not relevant that the republicans are lying about democrats' policy positions in their ads? after such a dirty, dishonest campaign do you expect these people to govern honestly and fairly? after using divisive wedge politics in their campaign, do you really expect a republican mccain/pailin administration to bring america together. Dr. Tom- Are there any bills in the list Obama voted on or sposored that changed or accomplished anything of note? What were they? McCain worked with Russ Feingold a Democratic senator and changed our campaign finance system. Give me one, and I'll give you another. Let's have a civil discourse.

But what did we learn from the last 8 years of the Bush Whitehouse. The media cannot be trusted to ask tough questions.

I'd like to know about that sports center she incompetently built in Wasilla, or about Troopergate.

Sequestered, or, getting ready to come out swinging? Team Obama certainly did today. They have pushed McCain's count at http://www.bop-o-ram.com almost to 500,000 adding 28,000 plus since this morning. We will have to see if Team McCain stays quiet at this real-time poll. They seem to be having some trouble getting organized as Obama's count has stayed stayed relatively steady. The Gallup Daily has everyone talking. Will the bounce keep going for McCain/Palin?

I don't know- but that's not the problem. The problem is that you can ask his supporters those questions and THEY don't know. There are large portions of Obama's life- in Indonesia and at Harvard Law for example that we never hear about....why? McCain has fellow veterans vouching for his character at the convention. WHERE ARE OBAMA'S FRIENDS AND ASSOCIATES? (other than quid pro quo politicians). I have asked dozens of times on these blogs for any Obama supporter to quote one act of any significance (you know what I feel about his weak ethics and loose nukes bills- not much) that he's performed for our country- name one family he helped organize and how???? They can't. They tell ME to go find out for them! Perhaps the best thing Obama did for this country was to admit on Bill O'Reilly's show that the surge worked- honesty is a good start. In admitting this fact, he provides one of many answers to the question of what John McCain has done for this country.

Obama is the Emperor (styrofoam pillars included!) and Camp Obama is embarassed to say that they don't see any clothes (accomplishments).

Can you imagine the uproar from the right if Hillary Clinton had demanded special treatment from the press? Rick Davis said the press needs to behave around Sarah Palin? Special treatment is sexist. What will happen to her? Will she get the vapors?

I can smell softballs a mile away!! I was watching Meet the Press today and thought, what if Palin was sitting right there were Biden was, getting the same basic questions. I could hear a lot of "well the McCain stance on this" or "Sen. Obama doesn't know that". In other words, no answers from her own knowledge and a bunch of redirected questions to the questions. That is how I feel the interview will go with Gibson...if he asks any tough questions at all. Certainly no follow up on blatenly incorrect answers.

As Biden said, nobody knows anything about her (including those Republicans who think she is great) because she has yet to say anything that has any substance at all. She hasn't expressed HER view on any of the worlds hot topics. And now McCain is going around saying that her work as Governor makes her have foreign policy experience? Does he really not know the roll of a governor in regard to the national guard? I guess Joe Lieberman wasn't close to whisper the facts into his ear.

If you folks enjoyed the Bush Administration and their executive privilege, unwarranted secrecy, and downright dismissal of the American people's right to know what their government is doing, you'll just love John McCain and Sarah Palin. Even Bush bothers to have press conferences with the whole press corps ( though he is scared of Helen Thomas ). Looks like a McCain/Palin administration might as well not even bother to hire a press secretary.

Seems to me like Miss Pitbull is closer to a poodle. She barks her head off until she's challenged. Then she runs away and hop up into her master's lap.

Gee Sarah, are you sure you want to sharpen your chops on a hard hitter like Charles Gibson? Maybe you want to start off with Access Hollywood and work your way up to Larry King?

what are her thoughts on global warming and what science does she have to back herself up on it...

why our forefather s and where they asked for separation of church and dtate

what outside a pipeline and calling for more drilling is her "expertise on oil"

what regions would be best suited for what kind of new energy formulas

why have the oil companies not drilled where they own

what does she think of venezuela asking for russian ships in the carribean...how would she deal with that

what is she goign to do about social security?

what changes would she make to our ever faltering healthcare system and the increasing costs and why ...

what examples of constitutional conflicts does she

does she think judges are legislating from the bench...are they all legislating toward the dems? or do some legislate the other way?

Being visually impaired, it has just come to me, I know where I've heard this voice before, maybe I'm wrong, but didn't she once sing the national anthem at a San Diego padres baseball game some years ago. I guess why I'm at it, just thinking on line, but maybe the reason Mccain got himself shot down was because, just maybe, he wasn't a very good fighter pilot, didn't Mccain graduate last at the academy, how well did those who graduated near the top of his class fair, I wonder. Who would even consider electing a dummy, only a dummy, I think I will go with the smart guy, call me dumb like that, please?

When interviewed - she should:
1) be asked the EXACT SAME QUESTIONS asked of Mr. Biden
2) be pressed to ANSWER the actual QUESTIONS (not spin or respond with a question)
3) be asked WHEN she learned about the issue and, if about the war, Georgia, the middle east, Katrina, or other issues of the past 8 years, what was her opinion AT THAT TIME!

Then let the public read/hear answers of both candiates on split screen.

First of all, the media is what, 85% liberal? And a certain news station already posted a particuraly snide comment about her not too long ago. Bottom Line:
She isn't going to be treated as nicely as Sen. Obama has during his campaign.

This is absurd. Any candidate for VP should be able to answer questions on DAY ONE of their candidacy. And this person could be president next year?? Unbelievable. The McCain campaign has proven it does not give a s--t about the American people or our right to know who we are voting for by the way it has conducted her nomination. The fact that this candidate can't answer questions until she is "comfortable" is patently disqualifying. Is al Qaeda supposed to wait until she is "comfortable" before attacking?? Wake up people! WASILLA, Alaska -- The biggest project that Sarah Palin undertook as mayor of this small town was an indoor sports complex, where locals played hockey, soccer, and basketball, especially during the long, dark Alaskan winters.

The only catch was that the city began building roads and installing utilities for the project before it had unchallenged title to the land. The misstep led to years of litigation and at least $1.3 million in extra costs for a small municipality with a small budget. What was to be Ms. Palin's legacy has turned into a financial mess that continues to plague Wasilla.

"It's too bad that the city of Wasilla didn't do their homework and secure the land before they began construction," said Kathy Wells, a longtime activist here. "She was not your ceremonial mayor; she was in charge of running the city. So it was her job to make sure things were done correctly."

Ms. Palin, now Alaska's governor and Republican Sen. John McCain's running mate, has pointed to her two terms as Wasilla's mayor, from 1996 to 2002, as evidence that she has enough executive experience to take on the presidency, should the need arise -- more than Democratic Sen. Barack Obama, who touts his own background as a community organizer in Chicago.

"I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities," Ms. Palin said Wednesday in her acceptance speech at the Republican convention.

Litigation resulting from the dispute over Ms. Palin's sports-complex project is still in the courts, with the land's former owner seeking hundreds of thousands of additional dollars from the city.
