Plane Not Sold on eBay

Updated 7:10 p.m.
By Anne E. Kornblut
One of the compelling anecdotes about Sarah Palin is that she auctioned off the Alaska governor's jet on eBay after taking office -- a swift move made by a reformer hoping to clean up the excesses of her predecessor.

But in fact, the jet did not sell on eBay. It was sold to a businessman from Valdez named Larry Reynolds, who paid $2.1 million for the jet, shy of the original $2.7 million purchase price, according to contemporaneous news reports, including a story in the New York Times.

Dan Spencer, the director of administrative services for Alaska's Public Safety Department, said that the Republican speaker of the Alaska House, John L. Harris, brokered the deal. Reynolds made campaign contributions to both Palin and Harris in 2006 and 2007.

What happened? It appears that, as promised during her bid for governor in 2006, Palin did try to sell the plane on eBay but that doing so was not as easy as it might have sounded. After putting it up to auction, there was one serious bid, in December 2006, and it fell through. Still, the Westwind II was sold about eight months later, achieving Palin's goal of ridding the state of a luxury item.

But that hasn't stopped Palin, or John McCain, from implying -- and, on Friday, claiming outright -- that Palin did sell the jet on the Internet.

"You know what I enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay -- and made a profit!" McCain declared in Wisconsin at a campaign stop on Friday. It could not be immediately determined what that profit was.

The video tribute to Palin that aired at the Republican National Convention on Thursday night made the same claim. "She signed sweeping ethics reform legislation, auctioned the governor's jet on eBay," the narrator said, citing it in a list of Palin's achievements.

Palin has been more cautious in her comments. Rather than claiming she sold it on eBay, she gave in her convention remarks a description that was true but, nonetheless, still left the impression she had sold the jet online. "That luxury jet was over the top. I put it on eBay," Palin said.

"She put the plane on eBay," said Tucker Bounds, a spokesman for McCain's campaign. "It didn't meet the minimum threshold the state desired so they used a broker. The plane was purchased by the former gov against the wishes of the legislature and voters -- was a symbol of corruption."

She sold the plane and saved the taxpayers money on maintenance and costs."

Sarah Palin said she put the jet on ebay and, you know, that's... um... actually what she did. It was a great move and a great line. The fact that the deal wasn't finally made over ebay is less than trivial. The fact that the press are compulsively trying to make a story out of it makes them less than trivial. This is utter, utter desperation. The American press has reached new lows and deserves all the scorn being heaped upon them.
If the line had been spoken by Joe Biden, given the same facts, the liberal media wouldn't have even peeped an objection.

Scott said: "McCain's fellow veterans surely stood up for him."

Veterans who were POWs with McCain say he was a collaborator. Evidence indicates this is true.

As someone who has been watching this election from far away,it has become increasingly important who wins because the problems your country has caused for all of us in the world is mind boggling: we also have troops in iraq fighting side by side with American troops,we have lost many men and women in battle, these are sons daughters, husbands, wives, brothers and sisters.

The whole world economy is in shambles because the republicans do not believe in regulation and oversight in their financial institutions, the result is a financial disaster in many countries due to the fact that most international banks lent money to Fannie mae and Freddie mac,now the govt has taken over those institutions, which i guess is what the republicans have been advocating against for decades.

So it gets to this, because of the screw ups of the republican government over the last 8 years the whole world has become interested in seeing how stupid Americans really are, after all you did Vote Bush twice,if your government is this Bad and you choose not to change it because of some kind of Bigotry or the lack of information on your candidates solutions to your problems, then America deserves all the Ridicule and decline it gets in the next four years.

I look forward to when the dollar will be replaced by the euro as the world markets trading currency, your financial markets are in turmoil because you decide to put someone at the helm who has stated on many occasions he has no clue about the economy, instead you tout his time in the Hanoi Hilton as his qualifications to be ready to lead.

Have any of you even bothered to check what Bin-ladens plan for the U.S was?

He promised to make the U.S bleed economically($10 billion/month in Iraq), make it implode from within(Gross disregard for the American constitution) and make you the laughing stocks of the world(since you re-elected bush you really have been just that),i tell you this election is going to be the litmus test to see if any of his plans are going to be more permanent than they already are,yet you just keep voting with blind patriotism without even caring for the future of your country.

By the time you all realize the destruction and disaster the republicans have caused for your country and the whole world,it will be your children, grand children and generations to come that will be paying for your mistakes and picking up the pieces.

TAKE YOUR COUNTRY BACK

This is not even a story. She put the plane on eBay it didn't sell there she did the smart thing and sold it through a broker.

A real story would be something like if a politician is giving a patronizing talk he/she thinks is not being recorded and calls Pennsylvanians gun toting religious nuts.

Now that tells you something about a candidate.

I am a Pennsylvanian, not gun toting but religious, and an entrepreneur actually creating jobs in my country and I don't need the government to give me a handout, legislate away my rights or tell me how to live my life. I need lower taxes and a smaller government and right now I am going to vote for Palin and McCain

you are the biggest idiot if you call this a lie, how about when obama was caught accepting finance contributions from rezko who he claimed he didnt know, then lying about the amounts 4 times before disclosing that he had taken at least (claiming he had only taken 64k then 84k then 100k and finally) 250k.

THAT is a lie, mccain slipping in a conversational speech.

IN A MANNER THAT DOES NOT IN ANY WAY MAKE SARAH PALIN LOOK ANY BETTER OR WORSE!

unless you beleive that having sold the plane on ebay is better than having put the plane on ebay and it eventtually selling to a third party as any difference.

the reality is the same, sarah palin put the plane on ebay, and it sold. she obeyed her constituents, and as a result got rid of a huge expenditure.

MORONS.

no actually its not, the entire focus of the gop is the ideology that government is to be fiscally responsible while the people chose to do good of thier own accord.

the democratic party is the one that focuses on the right to gay marriage abortion, and other such issues focused at the heart of simply "doing what you want to do".

face it, what sacrifice does a democrat make when they wont even sacrifice their future for the life of a child.

Why is it that when news orgs, even conservative ones like the Post, publish a truth that is not flattering to McCain and Palin, their apologists instead of defending them just go on the attack?

Let's face it-- McCain stood up there and lied to the American people about Palin's accomplishments, either because he was not in possession of the facts about his own running mate, or because he deliberately stretched the truth to impress the people who will forget what really happened and just remember "sold it on ebay."

Either way, it makes McCain not trustworthy.

Don't change the subject by going on about Obama and Biden, just look at the propaganda LIES your team tells and explain why it's acceptable to be that ignorant or that venal-- there's no middle ground, either McCain didn't know or he lied on purpose. Both are pretty disgusting.

your mindset is precisely what kills this country, and why the republican party still fights after 300 years to uphold traditional values.

Rumors are that the new USA Today poll being released on Monday has Obama considering throwing Joe Biden off the ticket (and under the campaign bus).

It may be time for Obama to make a big batch of Kool-Aid for all his campaign staff.

Posted by: USA Today | September 7, 2008 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Most of us will be better off with Obama in the White House. The vested interests have been, and still are effective, at using diversionary tactics in convincing people to vote against their own best interests. Unless you're filthy rich, you're being played for a fool if you vote republican.

Posted by: Charles | September 7, 2008 8:30 PM | Report abuse

your right, your facts are unequivocal, obama does not take money from lobbyists, just their wives who sign the paychecks while they stand back and nod their heads.

obama was born poor, like all of us, but to a rich father of high status and a mother whose family was in the upper echelons of society.

fact is, hes only been elected to a public office ONCE against a man whose approval rating was lower than bush.

he is a typical politician, with a tendency of stretching the truth for his own sake. hes not african american, his african american heritage is less than the 1/8th required to claim heritage in america. he is however 43% arabian, and quite easily 50% white.

again, you avoided the issue and attacked the others, the simple point is, multiple right wing articles emerged comparing obamas experience to sarah palin. i dont claim that any of those articles were unbiased, but the fact that they can even remotely exist, as a small rationality. the fact that most presidents of late have come from governerships and NOT senate seats, because it was widely acknowledged that senators dont have alot of experience. and the fact that obama has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WORTHY OF NOTE.

makes me wonder where your logic is, to attack palin, but stand up for obama. (or biden considering he has had brain surgery two times)

Citizen of Chicago,

I thought your post was excellent, but responding to the paid operatives is a waste of time. Even if they just happen to be volunteer ideologs its a waste of time, they don't understand about hope and rising above ones failings, only tearing down.

As for Obama's record, well it is a matter of public record just like John McCain's and Joe Biden's. Palin's is too and some of the highlights include signing a bill for ethics reform the Alaskan Democrats drafted. Keeping our tax dollars for the "Bridge to Nowhere" after backpedaling on it after McCain singled it out as pork.

Don't forget that executive experience like Commander in Chief of the Alaska National Guard. Oh, maybe we should forget that since her office only received one request for authority from the Major General who really runs it and that request was signed off by an aide because Palin wasn't available. You can read about that one in that bastion of the "Liberal Media", the Anchorage Daily News.

My advice for Palin is "Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive." I hope the "Liberal Media" doesn't fall for their attacks and keeps pushing for answers.

OBAMA LIES ABOUT OUTSOURCING TO FOREIGN SOIL!

Barack and Howard Dean are using a company called Donor Services Group in Los Angeles that has an outsource call center in Manila, Philippines to handle their fund raising efforts. This isn't the only company they are using that is open about sending American Jobs to foreign soil. Both Obama and Dean know this but they are getting great rates on with low wages and this works in their efforts to mislead the public on jobs.

Donor Services Group is a minimum wage company that does not pay a fair wage to nearly 150 staffers and refuses to pay for all hours worked and makes WalMart look like a very generous company!

Both DNC and Barack know this and don't care that the company uses harsh tactics on the staff to get money raised.

Hey Citizen of Chicago-

Your eloquence speaks volumes in its utter lack of citation of accomplishments....
we're still waiting-

his school report card is interesting but is not a qualification-

executive experience is lacking...

the name of one family he helped with his organization and how it helped is lacking...

a major law he ushured through the Senate is lacking....

the date of ANY hearing he held on the one subcommittee he chairs is lacking...

His qualifications to be President are sorely lacking.

Who has come forward from his past to support him (other than quid pro quo politicians)? Where are the families he helped in Chicago, the law school classmates, the University of Chicago colleagues? McCain's fellow veterans surely stood up for him.

Plus his voting record is the MOST extremely liberal in the Senate...

Where are the accomplishments Citizen?

This to Dale:

Thanks for the question. Forgive me if this meanders a bit.

I like both Hon. Senators Obama and McCain, and accept them both as qualified, but for different reasons. Likewise Senator Biden is qualified for the office he seeks. However Sarah Palin is not. There are many women politicians -- of either party whom I trust, so it's not Sarah Palin's gender.

In fact, there are many brilliant women judiciaries in American law schools who would make great vice presidents, and unlike Sarah Palin, none of them would have to ask what does a VP do all day.

All three Senators -- Obama, McCain, Biden -- in my opinion rise to the class of person called statesmen. Two guys are older, one is younger. Like McCain said, more joins than divides them.

How do I explain the particular promise and hope I see in Barack Obama?

Firstly, as Democratic candidate for United States President, Barack Obama's name wasn't just picked from a list. He is accepted as the legitimate top of the ticket by the party I feel most comfortable with. People forget why we have political parties. A political party is a group of experienced political people you trust to narrow down a thousand choices into a practical list of primary candidates. That list is the initial qualification earned by Obama and the other primary candidates.

Next, Obama won a series of races as tough in spirit as the Iron Dog sled race in Alaska. Obama's not just a pawn from a dynastic family, like Bush # 2 was. Obama proved hims character in hundreds of ways just winning America's longest primary. He won this grueling primary against contenders including the strongest, most political leaders in the Democratic party. Obama still is being tested, working with those leaders to keep the party strong, and my heart is with him. Anyone who thinks Obama is "just a rock star" is not showing much knowledge of national politics. Barack Obama is one tough, brave kid.

More Barack Obama's qualifications? One that I like is that he was trained at Harvard Law. He did brilliantly. Most people do not realize what a qualification the Harvard Law Review is. People used to know enough to respect that. It's hard for a candidate to allude to intellectual accomplishment. That's not what sells these days. Sure enough somebody will feel obliged to distinguish between "book learning" and the "real world", but Harvard is, if anything, more intense than the lives most of us have. Those finishing Harvard Law will have proved -- among other candidates of the highest quality -- that they have the energy and the intellect to be expected to accomplish great things, to be entrusted with great resources, and to maintain lifelong dedication to civilization..

Out of Harvard have come many of the best our nation has. That is a strong American tradition. Harvard has produced dozens of American Presidents, thousands of law makers and judges, and perhaps millions of industry and political leaders throughout the world. Harvard alumni don't automatically make good presidents, of course. G.W. Bush # got into Harvard (in Business not Law) after his sojourn with Yale and its Skull and Cross Bones club. In all three -- and then the Presidency -- Bush #2 followed his dad's footsteps but never filled his shoes

Annapolis (McCain's school) trains military officers. They graduate and climb the ranks of military profession. They're great people, truly. However military leadership is different from civilian leadership, except in what is called a military dictatorship, such as Cuba. Therefore I consider Obama's Harvard Law to be better prep for civilian legislators and executives. As to University of Idaho, honestly, they did a great job preparing Sarah Palin for a career in public relations, but her own pursuit of education appears to have stopped at the undergraduate degree.

What about Obama's executive experience? Since the job of the legislature is to define the job of the executive, it shouldn't be that big a leap. In some ways that would be like saying a doctor couldn't do a nurses job because nurses have to manage stuff while doctors merely cure disease.

Its not like Obama hasn't demonstrated an ability to inspire people to get things done. He inspires civilians to work without pay for a task they believe in. How many Obama workers are there, millions? People act as if, well, anybody could do that.

Would it help Obama's qualifications if he had commanded a navy? Well, McCain's father did that but he himself did not. McCain flew solo, maverick, not executive of anything and, after suffering as a POW, held a training command that didn't entice him so much, for he quit to follow his own path into politics, once more the loner, the maverick, the non-executive kind of guy. Nothing wrong with that, but it that a presidential kind of guy?

In congress, McCain slowly learned to navigate the complex environment of congress. He didn't have a Harvard Law degree, so it must have been tough. He kept at it though and eventually, not without early errors of ethical judgment, he became a senior senator. I haven't read his books, but I hope they explain how the son of a military man was transformed from an environment of taking orders into civilian world of many people, many different types and cultures, working to get things done, neither as a commander nor as a maverick. As Lincoln knew the White House, especially in time of war, is hub of the most complex and important team on earth (next to your own family).

In the corporate international business world, where world class is always in demand, the fact that a person has stuck to the same position for a longer time does not automatically make him "more qualified" than a younger person with better education and more energy. Indeed, the very fact that, at age 72, Senator McCain choose once more the lone maverick path to escape so long a seat.

Let's talk risk taking as a leadership quality. Risk requires courage. Both candidates have courage. It also requires intelligence, which is measured by outcome. We have little presidential class risk taking to judge here, except that McCain recently took the risky choice of picking Sarah Palin and spiced up his campaign. Fine. Obama took a longer, smarter risk when he dared declare a campaign to be President of the United States at a time when, embarrassingly, a person who is not white and super wealthy still is judged to have no chance. Barack Obama has already won an enormous prize for the reputation of the American presidency just by who he is and how he's gotten himself this far. As an American, how could I not support that?

We have a democracy, not a monarchy. I want someone who understands that to the core of his or her personality. With one exception, all the candidates impress me as qualified in this aspect. The exception is the Republican candidate for Vice President, Gov. Sarah Palin. Official investigations and charges shadowing the stages of her official career do not bode well.

Executive skill is a great marvel to a lot of people, but beside trustworthiness, the best executives seem to be hard working visionaries who inspire people around them. Would we have looked at a skinny kid named Bill Gates in 1980 and said, "That guy is qualified to develop one of the largest companies in history, in a completely new kind of market (personal computing) and, by the way, it will change the world. I happen to feel Obama is a Bill Gates kind of guy and John McCain is not. I hope for an America's future is about creating technology, advancing medicine, physical fitness and the arts, feeding the world, not being the dumb kid on the block that gets into every fight, "my war right or wrong".

I feel that Obama will have as excellent a cabinet and staff attracted to him, by the thrill of working with a President.like him, as at no time since John F. Kennedy. This means once again seeing the kind of math and science in our schools that put mankind on the moon, instead of the kind of education that gives us school shootings.

People keep losing trust in the basic institutions of America, first our government, now even our biggest financial institutions. We kick around the Congress as if we had no responsibility to go there ourselves if we could do better. Democratic Presidents generally restore popular trust in Government, because they always thing in terms of US and in let us work together because working together is good. The Republicans, given their preference for the lone wolf, maverick mentality, think in terms of US as in let some of us work together to defeat them, for they are bad and we are good. There is a time for each party type. I guess you know where I stand.

"again you prove my point, she is nothing like hillary, mccain did NOT choose her because shes a woman, but because she is a smart and wildly bold person. its funny when reading liberals spout things, they are always the first to bring up the gender and race cards, then accuse republicans of being racist when we reply."

Posted by: dale

Gender card? Race card? How about the religion card too? McCain didn't pick her because of gender? Grow up dale you can't be that ignorant. You're correct though, he picked for her gender, race and religion. What better than a right wing, pentecostal (oh yeah, now former pentecostal, we aren't sure what now), white new-con. He gets it all in one package. He played them all at the same time.

I think it is laughable the Mccain campaign spin kiddies used the gender card even before anyone has even had the chance to interview Palin and are only trotting her out with Mccain. Fiorina had a lot of nerve yelling sexism, what do they expect, people aren't going to ask questions about this unknown?

You still better learn to read and to comprehend. Her intention most certainly was to deceive. Did she bother to correct Mccain? Evidently not since he keeps saying the same thing over and over.

If it wasn't so sad it would be a huge joke, the problem is the American people are the punch line.

My faith in NBC is restored.

VP voracity-

"...The New York Times reported the 2007 crowd at the University of Iowa grew silent as Biden gave his version of what happened that day.

"Let me tell you a little story," The newspaper quoted Biden as saying. "I got elected when I was 29, and I got elected November the 7th. And on Dec. 18 of that year, my wife and three kids were Christmas shopping for a Christmas tree. A tractor-trailer, a guy who allegedly -- and I never pursued it -- drank his lunch instead of eating his lunch, broadsided my family and killed my wife instantly, and killed my daughter instantly, and hospitalized my two sons, with what were thought to be at the time permanent, fundamental injuries....
"Even before Obama asked Biden to join his campaign, political observers said the senator's gaffes could be a liability in a contest where every word will be scrutinized. Biden's first presidential campaign 20 years ago was undone by charges he plagiarized parts of a speech by British Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock....

"The rumor about alcohol being involved by either party, especially the truck driver, is incorrect," said Jerome O. Herlihy, a Delaware Superior Court judge who was chief deputy attorney general and worked with crash investigators in 1972.

Rick, I'll tell you.........

I don't know- but that's not the problem. The problem is that you can ask his supporters those questions and THEY don't know. There are large portions of Obama's life- in Indonesia and at Harvard Law for example that we never hear about....why? McCain has fellow veterans vouching for his character at the convention. WHERE ARE OBAMA'S FRIENDS AND ASSOCIATES? (other than quid pro quo politicians). I have asked dozens of times on these blogs for any Obama supporter to quote one act of any significance (you know what I feel about his weak ethics and loose nukes bills- not much) that he's performed for our country- name one family he helped organize and how???? They can't. They tell ME to go find out for them! Perhaps the best thing Obama did for this country was to admit on Bill O'Reilly's show that the surge worked- honesty is a good start. In admitting this fact, he provides one of many answers to the question of what John McCain has done for this country.

Obama is the Emperor and Camp Obama is embarassed to say that they don't see any clothes (accomplishments).

all your facts are still alleged, and im willing to bet that palin will face them and win (again). the only reason she ran unopposed in alaska was because she herself countered the corruption of the previous heathens in office.

but the most worriesome fear i have about your article: what on earth makes you think anything would be safe with barack obama for 4 years?

with the obvious threat of assasination by the bottom 2% of the gun totting southerners, and the policies outlining teaching africans about abortion to cut down on aids instead of providing them with medical care? not to mention the claims of his distant relatives liberating auschwitz with the american army (which was liberated by teh brits.) not to mention the assured test he will face in his first 40 days from nuclear/ sorry i mean north korea. by what standard is he in any way fit to lead?

Posted by: dale | September 7, 2008 6:05 AM | Report abuse

Sarah Palin may be a creationist, but the strip tease revelation of one half-truth after another is definitely the product of intelligent design. The question is whose?

I'm sure the country can survive 4 years of either Obama or McCain, but not at all sure about Sarah Palin.

The Sarah Palin as Norma Jean? Ha! More like the guy in "Catch Me if You Can" who faked being a commercial airline pilot for years, by carefully observing, learning the ropes, and gaming the system.

Guess what, fellow voters, at the end of our nations longest most investigative national election process, we now have only 60 days to decide if Sarah Palin can be trusted to have access to nuclear weapons.

Do we need Sarah Palin in office so badly that, like John McCain, we can just roll the dice? No! By his choice John McCain has picked a women for symbolic marketing reasons, and he has washed his hands of responsibility, saying, "Let the people decide." Let the people decide.

Here's how I decide. Here's why Sarah is disqualified:

1) As mayor, Sarah Palin loaded her tiny town with millions in government pork and still left the town with $19 million new debt and new taxes to pay it off. But she repeatedly presents herself as just the opposite. That's hypocrisy. At best is is salesmanship and not statesmanship!

2) Working with Sen. Stevens, Sarah Palin was at least party to the well suspected Alaskan Republican machine, but she got out before the FBI raids. Because of John McCain's sneak attack on reasonable public expectation, there is no time for voters to get the facts and decide whether she was a whistleblower -- as she claims -- or just once again foxed the system!

3) Sarah Palin easily rode in on the anti-incumbent tide that swept the nation in 2006. She help promote her image as the "Hottest Governor for the Coolest State". Great way to pick a Governor, Alaska. Nevertheless, her rise to Governor is held forth as a qualification for a tremendously more sensitive office. The land mass of Alaska may be enormous, but Sarah Palin had only a small population to dazzle to win the Governorship.

4) While Sarah Palin was pleasing Alaskan voters with oil money handouts, that sure didn't lower the cost of gasoline for the rest of America. I don't grudge the Alaskans any rightful bounty or necessary financial aide, but buying popularity with oil dollars does not qualify you for Vice-President!

5) Sarah seems to have a pattern of misusing power to silence critics and settle personal scores. Whether its small stuff or not, oddly enough, that kind of "experience" is not considered good.

there is no elevation of status involved, she took the initiative to sell it, and the fact is, she is more popular than obama not just mccain. and yes u can find poll after poll discussing it across teh board.

and where is this integrity? when mccain choose what was widely acknowledged amongst republicans (as early as june i might add) the best and only choice for vp.

whereas obama chose someone to fill his ticket.

again you prove my point, she is nothing like hillary, mccain did NOT choose her because shes a woman, but because she is a smart and wildly bold person. its funny when reading liberals spout things, they are always the first to bring up the gender and race cards, then accuse republicans of being racist when we reply.

Posted by: dale | September 7, 2008 5:12 AM | Report abuse

in what way? she promised the plane would be put up on ebay and it was, if anything mccain was the only one who even stretched the truth saying she sold it on ebay, and even then there was no intent to deceive, the exact same effect she stated in putting it on ebay was teh same as haaving sold on ebay.

Posted by: dale | September 7, 2008 5:06 AM | Report abuse

Well dale by your own definition you have proved the point, Palin lied. You had better re-read the definition again. She deliberately lied in an attempt to prove she is something she is not. She attempted to skew the facts to increase her own status. I'd call that a lie wouldn't you?

Let's face it, she suckered mccain and now they are in major spin control. They can't dump her yet because that would look bad. Can you say Dan Quayle? The problem is she is more popular than mccain is in her own party. I thought the circus was heading straight to Baraboo this year. Seems it stopped off in St. Paul for a few days first.

I wonder how the republican spin doctors would have treated Hillary if the situation was reversed? They would try to rip her apart. Oh wait, they already tried that. Palin is no Clinton and I wasn't even a Clinton supporter but it is SOOO obvious the similarities end with them being the same gender. What a bunch of hypocrites to try compare Hillary to Palin, there is no comparison.

So, better to be a liberal swine than a hypocritical neo-con I'd say. At least we swine have some integrity, neo-cons have none.

Posted by: wes1155 | September 7, 2008 4:42 AM | Report abuse

also, to all of you obviously uneducated swine toting liberal agendas including the editorial columnist above, allow a high school drop out to define a lie for you.

–noun
1. a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.

see that deliberate intent? so what was teh deliberate intent of misleading us to beleive that it was sold on ebay? does somehow selling it on ebay as opposed to another area bolster her likeyness?

perhaps we shall go to mccains statement also claimed to be a lie that (paraphrase) palin was starting her political career long before obama. again, not meant to be taken literal, but taken liberal literal. (ooh i may have to coin that as a real phrase).

see, a lie is intentionally misleading someone, kinda like claiming that your taxes wont affect the lower classes, or perhaps wearing a $1400 suit and claiming to not be elitist. but then again, who or what kind of politician would do something like that?

Posted by: dale | September 7, 2008 4:24 AM | Report abuse

wait a second, can you liberals honestly beleive...

A) this is not a biased media article when the topic is lying through semantics's?

B) that mccains choice of palin is more appealing to the conservative base than others on his short list others that were quite obviously less "risky"?

C) that obamas choice of biden wasnt a complete sellout?

if you can answer all of these questions, not only will i give you a cookie, but ill give you teh honor of having explained away a 7 point drop in obamas ratings in every poll nationwide.

Dear Scott,

Glad to see the second shift has come one line. However as I am certain you feel about so many of the Palin stories, I have to say this is not the shocking scandal you suggest.

Let's see, he apologized in 2001 to the daughter and then used the word "allegedly" when referring to it in 2007. Is that akin to saying "put on eBay"?

Neither you, I , Joe Biden or the man's daughter and certainly the reporter will ever know more than we do right now since the only other person who was directly involved who had a cognitive recollection is now also gone. I can only imagine the pain and anguish Joe Biden must have felt and still feels over his lose of his wife and daughter. Do you think after such an event you wouldn't question what happened all of your life? But I suppose that would require compassion. I can only imagine the pain the man driving the truck must have felt no matter what the actual circumstances were.

What has Barak Obama done? Well, I didn't start out posting here to be a campaign surrogate like you. (I have noticed your posts on just about any story relating to McCain, Palin, Biden or Obama so I can only conclude it is your occupation.), but he does have a legislative record not only in the US Senate, but in the Illinois Senate as well. So I guess when you cast aspersions at Obama you are also casting them at Senator Lugar and the other Republicans he has co-sponsored legislation and worked with.

But I'll tell you, what he has done which I feel is more important than any piece of legislation his name may be attached to has been is trying to raise people up rather than tear them down. Yes, a foreign concept to be sure, he MUST be an alien!

What is also sad is to see John McCain's complete sellout to the crowd he so long professed to be fighting. I would have voted for McCain in 2000, maybe even in 2004 had he got the nomination, but now...no way. His pick of a self describe "Pitbull with Lipstick" drove this independent moderate far, far away. By the way, the joke was a rather old one although in these parts it is said referring to soccer moms.

Regardless, the relentless diatribe from the speakers at the RNC convention, people who have no right to criticize anyone if they had any morals to speak of, topped off by Palin and her spewing fourth of lies, half truths and pompous, bellicose venomous words...I've had enough, I'll take my chances with a "lacking executive experience" senator rather than an old man who sold out and a dilettante executive with virtually no experience with the world outside of Alaska and seems to revel in her role of driving people apart.

By the way, nothing against Alaska, I've been there and it is incredibly beautiful. Well except for the hungriest mosquitoes on the planet. However, Alaska is a rather different world than the other 49 states, or if you believe the lie about Obama, 56 states.

Regards

It is sad to see John McCain caught up in the farce his campaign has become. I do believe Hon. Senator McCain is a friend to the flag and the Constitution of the United States, and therefore to all of us.

But John McCain appears to be in as much danger as we are of being mislead by the plot of the Sarah Palin narrative.

The Republican propaganda machine, using the techniques of "political narrative", continues a campaign of deceiving the American public about Sarah Palin. Like actors in their own blockbuster movie, call it the SARAH PALIN PLOT.

What a script they have!

They knew facts would come out, so they "frame the issues" with emotionally based biases: 1) liberal media are bad guys 2) therefore anything bad about Sarah must be just a smear campaign.

They use pageantry, buzz words, and strategic information release (including preemptive leaks of dirt against themselves).

These would be "leaders" only want to lead us into "Sarah Palin fascination". In the resulting "transportation" or state of emotion, we were not supposed to think.

They know -- or hope -- that as the public discovers each small lie, many items get dismissed as "no big deal". But the overall picture comes out over time.

Will it be clear to the voters in time?

Palin/McCain are in a race to reach the White House power, before people catch on and turn away in sad disgust. If they win the race, the torch they transfer would be a torch of lies, passed from Bush #2 to a "Bush #3" under different name.

If HOLY PREDATOR SARAH (or as they call her "Barracuda") reaches power, I worry. I don't trust Sarah Palin. I don't trust the "hidden persuaders" that swim with her. The those sharks, "we the people" are only the unglamorous small fry.

Their political narrative campaign is telling me Sarah the Barracuda is trustworthy. They are slick, but she is NOT trustworthy.

What will the Assemblies of God oriented Sarah Palin do with nuclear weapons? Is there a line she would NOT cross? Or would Bush's "War of Terror" rapture America into a Sarah Palin "Holy War on Terror" That's not America. That's the America the bad guys want to force us to become. If we become what we hate, they win.

China had its Cultural Revolution. Something like that can't happen here, right? Because we don't inflame the divisions between us, we don't have secret inner groups ruling over us, and we support a dedicated, principled free press, right? But what about Sarah Palin?

Let me close with this. I am not perfect. If what I say here gives anyone offense, I apologize. But you can see my concern. Please think about it. However you vote, vote with honor, loving the liberties we have, the Constitution of the United States of America, the American way of life we share, as symbolized by the flag, "with liberty and justice for all."

1972 crash still haunts driver's family
No DUI in crash that killed Biden's 1st wife, but he's implied otherwise

Since his vice presidential nomination, Joe Biden's 2007 statement that a "guy who allegedly ... drank his lunch" and drove the truck that struck and killed his first wife and daughter has gained national media traction.

Alcohol didn't play a role in the 1972 crash, investigators found. But as recently as last week, the syndicated TV show Inside Edition aired a clip from 2001 of Biden describing the accident to an audience at the University of Delaware and saying the truck driver "stopped to drink instead of drive."

The senator's statements don't jibe with news and law enforcement reports from the time, which cleared driver Curtis C. Dunn, who died in 1999, of wrongdoing.

"To see it coming from [Biden's] mouth, I just burst into tears," Dunn's daughter, Glasgow resident Pamela Hamill, 44, said Wednesday. "My dad was always there for us. Now we feel like we should be there for him because he's not here to defend himself."

Biden spokesman David Wade said Wednesday that the senator "fully accepts the Dunn family's word that these rumors were false."

It's unclear who first suggested alcohol was a factor in the crash, but since Barack Obama tapped Biden to be his running mate on Aug. 23, The New York Times, National Public Radio and The Economist have run stories that characterized Dunn as a drunken driver.

"The rumor about alcohol being involved by either party, especially the truck driver, is incorrect," said Jerome O. Herlihy, a Delaware Superior Court judge who was chief deputy attorney general and worked with crash investigators in 1972.

"If it were some part of a cause of the accident, there would have been a charge, simply because if you're driving under the influence and kill someone in the process -- whether it's the wife of a U.S. senator or anybody else -- there's going to be a charge," he said.

Herlihy said investigators discussed several possible causes for the crash, including that Biden's first wife, Neilia, turned her head and didn't see the oncoming truck as she exited the intersection of Limestone and Valley roads on Dec. 18, 1972.

Neither Biden's book nor his campaign Web site directly addresses the alcohol issue, but the senator has done so publicly on at least two occasions.

The New York Times reported the 2007 crowd at the University of Iowa grew silent as Biden gave his version of what happened that day.

"Let me tell you a little story," The newspaper quoted Biden as saying. "I got elected when I was 29, and I got elected November the 7th. And on Dec. 18 of that year, my wife and three kids were Christmas shopping for a Christmas tree. A tractor-trailer, a guy who allegedly -- and I never pursued it -- drank his lunch instead of eating his lunch, broadsided my family and killed my wife instantly, and killed my daughter instantly, and hospitalized my two sons, with what were thought to be at the time permanent, fundamental injuries."

Biden told a similar story when addressing an audience at the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware a few days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"It was an errant driver who stopped to drink instead of drive and hit a tractor-trailer, hit my children and my wife and killed them," Biden said, according to a transcript archived on his Senate Web site.

Even before Obama asked Biden to join his campaign, political observers said the senator's gaffes could be a liability in a contest where every word will be scrutinized. Biden's first presidential campaign 20 years ago was undone by charges he plagiarized parts of a speech by British Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock.

Asked about Biden's accounts of the accident, Wade warned against writing anything that would "infer, paraphrase, or be anything less than precise on such a personal and tragic subject."

After the 1972 accident, Biden never sought any records from the time of the crash, nor did he seek any further investigation, Wade said.

"In remarks he made at the University of Iowa he said 'allegedly -- and I never pursued it.' " Wade wrote in an e-mail. "Nor did he encourage reporting on it then or at any other time. He has never called it or thought of it as anything other than an 'accident.' His focus was his grief over the loss of his wife and daughter and his concern for the recovery of his sons."

News reports from 1972 said Neilia Hunter Biden pulled away from a stop sign at Limestone and Valley roads about 2:30 p.m. when the tractor-trailer driven by Dunn, which was coming down a hill on Limestone Road, hit the side of her station wagon. Dunn freed himself from the truck and was the first to reach the Biden car, according to a report by the The Evening Journal, a precursor to The News Journal.

Neilia Biden and 13-month-old daughter Naomi, whom the family called Amy, were declared dead at a hospital. Son Beau, now Delaware's attorney general, broke his leg, and son Hunter suffered head injuries. Joe Biden, who had been elected to his first term in the Senate just a month before, took his oath of office at the boys' bedside.

Two days after the crash, Herlihy, a neighbor of the Bidens in the late 1960s who still considers the senator "a friend," told the paper that there was no evidence that Dunn "was speeding, drinking or driving a truck with faulty brakes." No criminal charges related to the crash were ever filed against Dunn, who lived in North East, Md.

Hamill, one of seven children, was 8 years old at the time of the accident. She remembers her father watching news reports of the crash while wearing a sling to support a shoulder injury he suffered in the accident.

She said Dunn was always "solemn" around the Christmas holidays. Years later, when her brother planned to get married on Dec. 18, Dunn told the family "I don't celebrate on that day," Hamill said.

"We're not trying to equate Sen. Biden's loss to my father's heartache," Hamill said. "But we wanted it to be known that our father never forgot that tragic day."

Hamill said it wasn't until the Inside Edition report that she became aware that the Delaware senator had said alcohol played a role in the accident. Dunn did not consume any alcohol the day of the crash, Hamill said.

She said she immediately called Biden's office after being contacted by Inside Edition and is waiting for the senator's response.

"The family feels these statements are both hurtful and untrue and we didn't know where they originated from," Hamill said.

As Hamill watched a recording of the Inside Edition report Wednesday, she gasped when the clip of Biden's comments from Iowa came on screen.

After reading a News Journal account of Biden's 2001 speech at UD, Hamill sent Biden a letter on behalf of her father. The newspaper story included Biden's description of getting the call that his wife and daughter had died, but not his comments about Dunn.

Hamill said her note to the senator described how Dunn was affected by the accident.

Printed on the senator's letter head and dated Oct. 11, 2001, the response from Biden reads:

"I apologize for taking so long to acknowledge your thoughtful and heartfelt note," Biden wrote. "All that I can say is I am sorry for all of us and please know that neither I nor my sons feel any animosity whatsoever."

For instance, do you know if you leave the flag display at night it is supposed to be lighted? Do you know when it is hung which is the proper way? @fsteele

the story is olde, April 07. yet, why did rush limbaugh nearly burst a neck vein explaining to listeners the genius of wannabee Sarah Palin? why did McCain, yesterday, rewrite the olde true story with his version, that Sarah sold a jet on eBay? that the next VP is computer-savvy? why did Sarah herself, lead us in that same direction with her depiction during her acceptance speech? all three of them must, like you, and the whole Republican Select and Vett Team that no jet was sold via eBay?

Rimbaugh, McCain & Palin, all three prettying up an olde, untrue story - can we perhaps blame it on jet lag? Hope so.

So when I saw the plane come up on eBay I liked what I saw,
and I sent an email off to find what the reserve was; including
what came with the plane. My message wasn't understood I
guess.. because I received a message back: the Governor was
reserved and did not come with the plane.

I thought getting rid of the plane was a profit when you learn what the standby cost for a crew is, including fuel and overhead. Just ask Senator Obama.

Sarah said she "PUT it on Ebay." That was a serious attempt and showed a good approach, even though they eventually had to turn to a conventional broker to get the price the state wanted.

A good local Alaska paper published the whole story April 22, 2007. It's even more to Palin's credit than McCain's version. The plane belonged to the former governor, was costing the state a lot, and her action was very popular.

Putting it on Ebay was a serious project. They tried it several times but finally a conventional broker got them a better price.

The state has tried selling its unwanted jet online four times and failed. So last week, the Palin administration signed a contract with an Anchorage aircraft broker who thinks he can succeed where eBay couldn't The eBay thing didn't work out very well, said Dan Spencer, director of administrative services for the Department of Public Safety. He's the person charged with trying to get rid of the infamous Westwind II.

First off, a little off subject, but, wow, it wasn't until John McCain told about his being a prisoner of war during his acceptance speech that I realized he was a prisoner of war! What a hero! Does anyone else know about this? I mean, I watched most of the convention, and I don't understand why no one else mentioned it! He is so humble- Jesus would have done the it his way (you know, real hero like and humble instead of pandering to people).

But as for this Sarah Palin, I just gots one thing to say-

"Liar! Shame, shame, shame, everyone knows ur name!"

What a couple of freaks- an egocentric, out-of-control old man who feels his country owes him this (hey, why doesn't he share the presidency with all the other prisoners of war? Like each gets a month- that way they share!) AND an egocentric, golly-gee twit with a truth problem (and a mean streak the size of the cross St. John carried around).

@theSwimmah

boy, you enjoy religious-jumping off them cliffs to the never-never-land.

Is there really an objective US perspective on which of the world's monotheistic (= one god only please) religions is superior, and which inferior?

The founding fathers of the American Republic would find that rather outlandish, maybe even downright outdated.

The fact is: no American can be president unless he/she pretends to go the church regularly & pretends to believe in pie in the sky.

Last time i looked at the Milky Way up there it was hiding a nice 'black hole', several 100 million times "heavier" than our own sun, sucking in the neighbourhood dust & all other matter around - come to think of it, a good place for monotheistic gods to hide, or Jesus? God bless, of course.

Lori, you write:

"What about the millions of Vietnamese citizens and children who were murdered by their own government after we irresponsibly pulled out of Vietnam before pulling them from power because of the treasonous shrieking of the liberal immature babyboomers in the US?"

Nixon, Republican President, ended the Vietnam conflict (from 570.000 soldiers to zero soldiers, by 1973) ... take a look, if you have time to read how the dying in this poor nation stopped. Cheney talks about Russia beating up on little Georgia ...
what were we doing in Vietnam?

rtfanning,

Maybe, I can't speak for them nor would I attempt to.

All I can say is that it seems to be crafted in the same tone and with about as much reliance on facts as what you are calling Kornblut on. So I think it would be an excellent addition to the Obama rumor/truth list.

Now wouldn't Obama have had a background check by the FBI or some agency as a result of being a member of the Senate and the committees he is on? I don't know the answer to that question and probably no one here can reply authoritatively. But if someone can provide references it would be interesting to know. For that matter, did Bush/Cheney, Clinton or any president have a background check. Well since J. Edgar Hoover left the scene.

Dear Jriman,

am no specialist in constitutional law, but i can't believe that Nancy Pelosi, Speaker is the one who decides how long the HoR or the Senat sit or do not sit.

in fact, although WG Bush says such things, such as they (them, thar..those guys et cetera) should stay at their post and so does his chosen-one McCain (who actually should know better than just repeating Bush's political jabs), the issue of what length a session (HoR or Senat) is most likely predetermined & fully spelled out ... or like, almost written in stone. that's a democracy for you. no doubt, a clear majority has to vote, to decide on extensions of (HoR/Senat) sessions or an early commencements.

it sounds too simplistic, somehow, to believe that Nancy Pelosi, alone, or one side alone (either Rep. or Dem.) decides a matter that concerns the whole body (of the HoR/Senat).

Unless, you have the hard cold facts hereto ... i suggest we both read up on this constitutional subject before casting blame on only one side (of the HoR/Senat). Some people even believe that their country -cause their born there - is the greatest in the world?

BUSH GIVES STATE SECRETS TO OBAMA

Barack Obama, who has not been “vetted” by the FBI for the position of president of the United States, received his “first high level briefing” on Tuesday from the office of the Director of National Intelligence, CNN has reported. “Obama was given the briefing at the FBI field office in Chicago,” the cable channel said, from a “team of intelligence experts.” But why should Obama, with a documented history of contacts with communists and terrorists, be trusted with this information?

What procedures are in place to make sure that Obama and/or his aides do not disclose any of this information to foreign or hostile interests? Will somebody in the media stop digging into Sarah Palin’s family life long enough to look into this?

Because of his 30-year association with people who hate the United States, including communist Frank Marshall Davis., anti-American preacher Jeremiah Wright, and communist terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, it is highly doubtful that Obama could get a security clearance in the U.S. government he wants to lead.

But rather than raise this issue, the major media want to investigate Sarah Palin’s pregnant daughter and her husband’s driving record.

The federal government provides a “Questionnaire for National Security Positions” to people eligible for a security clearance. There are several requests for information that Obama might find difficult to answer. They include “Other names used” by applicant, “Citizenship of your relatives and associates,” “Your foreign activities,” and “Your use of illegal drugs and drug activity.”

But Obama doesn’t have to fill out any such form. He is above it all.

According to CNN, President Bush authorized the briefing for Obama. “President Bush has followed the practice of previous presidents in deciding that intelligence briefings will be made available to the presidential and vice presidential candidates of both major parties,” CNN reported.

This may be a traditional practice but what is its legal and rational basis? And why are the “major” candidates only given access to this information?

The office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) would only confirm to AIM that the briefing took place, in coordination with the White House, and that “intelligence briefings on certain topics of national security interest” are being provided to the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of “the two major parties.”

This is a raw exercise of presidential power that Obama would never object to but the American media should question. That is, if reporters have a patriotic bone in their bodies. After all, simple common sense dictates that America’s state secrets should not be given away willy-nilly to a security risk who just happens to be running for president and captured the nomination of a major political party.

It’s going to be hard for John McCain to argue that Obama is a danger to U.S. national security when President Bush, with no clear basis in law or the Constitution, is providing him high-level intelligence briefings.

In yet another story about whether Sarah Palin was properly vetted as the Republican vice-presidential candidate, the Washington Post says it was wrong to previously report that Palin had undergone an FBI background check. “A knowledgeable official said Tuesday that the vetting team had hoped to run such a check but that FBI officials declined to do so because that type of inquiry is reserved for people nominated for senior administration jobs,” the paper said.

Obama wasn’t checked out by the FBI, either. But the Post won’t make that crystal clear to its readers. It wants the focus to be on Palin, the conservative wife and mother that media feminists abhor and detest.

The paper added, “One U.S. law enforcement official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said the FBI does not conduct any kind of background checks or criminal history searches on behalf of political candidates or parties.”

The paper should have said that the FBI doesn’t conduct any kind of background checks or criminal history search of the candidates themselves. And that includes Obama, who is, after all, at the top of the Democratic ticket.

We are witnessing an incredibly strange situation in which Obama can avoid a background check and get access to national security information, but the people he appoints to high-level government positions—if he becomes president—may be subject to an FBI probe. And the process of turning over this information to Obama, despite the lingering questions about his mysterious and controversial background, has already begun.

If he becomes president, Obama will have instant access to all of our nation’s most highly classified intelligence information. And the FBI won’t dare tap Obama’s phones to find out if the information is being shared with hostile foreign interests. Indeed, Obama will be picking the head of the FBI.

Advisers to John McCain are complaining that Palin is being unfairly investigated, as part of a campaign to damage the Republican ticket, and that Obama has escaped serious scrutiny. That’s a valid point. But the Republican National Committee has treated questions about Obama’s background and associates as a laughing matter, launching a Facebook parody site for the Democratic presidential candidate.

The “Barackbook” website treats Obama’s friendly associations over the years with figures such as communist Frank Marshall Davis and terrorist Bill Ayers as amusing. The GOP is apparently trying to make a serious point through comedy. But associations with communists and terrorists are a serious matter that should be taken seriously.

In contrast to the Republicans, who have been caught flat-footed by the media feeding frenzy over Palin, the Obama Democrats are taking all of these matters very seriously. The Obama campaign covered up the Davis matter for many months before issuing a report that falsely portrayed Davis as a civil rights activist. Our media, not surprisingly, have failed to expose any of this.

The Obama campaign has also fought back hard against a private group that raised the issue in a television ad of Obama’s friendly association with Bill Ayers. The Obama campaign has demanded that the group be investigated by the Justice Department and that the ad be rejected for airing by television stations. This is an indication that President Obama will use the Justice Department and the FBI to go after his political enemies.

The rather mild ad, which simply points out the basic facts about Ayers and his involvement in a campaign of bombings, was erroneous in the sense that it portrayed Ayers as a domestic terrorist and his Weather Underground organization as an “American terrorist group.” The FBI has an entire file, available on its website, which includes information on the “international travels” of the Ayers group. “This organization described itself as a revolutionary organization of communist men and women,” the FBI says, in typical bureaucratic jargon. Ayers and his comrades were getting training and advice from communists in Havana and Hanoi. Ayers and Dohrn are both still active in radical causes, and Ayers has traveled down to Venezuela to sing the praises of the anti-American ruler there.

Ayers, now a professor and specialist in education matters, could be the Secretary of Education in an Obama Administration if a Democratic Senate confirms him. Such an appointment could not be ruled out in view of the media’s failure to hold Obama responsible for his connections to Ayers and other unsavory characters.

Interestingly, the Weather Underground information was prepared by the FBI’s Chicago field office.

So the intelligence community is now briefing a candidate whose associates, communist terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, were the subjects of an investigation by the same FBI office where the briefing is taking place. The FBI office in Chicago is also where the investigation of communist Frank Marshall Davis began. The investigation was transferred to Hawaii when Davis moved there.

But don’t expect the media to notice any of this. They’re too busy nosing around Palin’s family.

By the way, in her acceptance speech, Princess Palin said "oh Todd...shucks...his grandmother is (was? can't remember) "part" Yupik." So that would make him as much Yupik as I am Shawnee. Not that it matters, but we are trying to separate rumors from fact.

Dear Ann Kornblutt,

Lets have a Palin rumor & innuendo enema right here and now and be done with it so you can cover something more worthy of your skills like Kevin Federlines career as a fledgling rapper. Governor Palin is NOT in support of late term or "partial birth" abortion ..get over it.

Palin Rumors
Cripes, this has gotten ridiculous. Folks, look, let’s just run through a list here. (Updated.)
Yes, she is Governor of Alaska. No, she’s not the Lieutenant Governor. No, she’s not currently Mayor of Wasilla. Yes, she was Mayor of Wasilla, some years ago.
Yes, there are people in Alaska who think she’s too liberal.
Yes, she did push for and approve the Wasilla Sports Center. Yes, it did cost a lot of money. (People keep saying $20 million, that article says $14.5 million, but then they also added a $1.2 million dollar food service/kitchen piece. This year, since Palin was out of office as Mayor.) Yes, the city went into debt to do it (how did you buy your house, bunkie?) and raised the city sales tax from 2 percent to 2.5 percent to pay for it. Yes, the city is paying it off early.
Yes, she did want authority to have wolves culled from the air, because they were taking too many moose and caribou. Which people hunt for food in the back country in Alaska. No, she isn’t shooting them herself. I mean, not that she couldn’t, but I’m sure she doesn’t have time. (Thanks to bluemerlin in the comments.)
No, the Downs baby (Trig) isn’t Bristol’s kid, and no, the kid wasn’t born with Downs because (a) Palin flew on an airplane (b) went home to have the baby after an amniotic leak (c) because he was the result of incest between Todd Palin and Bristol.
No, Track (the kid who is leaving for Iraq) didn’t join the NG because he was a drug addict. He may have joined the NG because he was tired of people saying his Mom was getting him into the good hockey leagues. (Yes, that one was original reporting. I’ve got sources in Wasilla.)
No, she’s never been in any porn as far as anyone can find (and God knows I get enough google hits on those very topics.)
No, no one seems to be able to even find swimsuit pictures of her from her beauty queen days; God knows I looked. The bikini pictures that are around are photoshopped, just like the Vogue cover I have up.
No she wasn’t a member of the (wild-eyed libertarian) Alaska independence Party, although her husband once was
No, neither the (Canadian) National Post, nor Marc Armbinder at the Atlantic have troubled themselves to issue a correction. Yes, the New York Times did finally correct their story of September 1 — on September 5. This was after Elizabeth Bumiller was quoted by Howard Kurtz as saying she was “completely confident about the story.” Yes, that was after the New York Times’s source retracted the story. Yes, this should embarrass the Times, Bumiller, and Howard Kurtz. No, there have been no signs of embarrassment.
No, she was never a Pat Buchanan supporter; even when Buchanan claims she was, she was on the board of Steve Forbes’a campaign in Alaska.
No, she’s not anti-semitic. In fact, she has an Israeli flag in her office. (Contrary to popular belief, the usual Evangelical thinks Israel has a right to exist, granted by God.)
No, she’s doesn’t believe that the Iraq War was directed by God. Yes, she did pray that proceeding w ith the war was God’s will. (Ever hear the phrase “Not my will, but Thine, be done”?)
No, Buchanan doesn’t support her now; in fact he’s supporting Obama. (Buchanan did think her speech was amazing, but then so do 80 percent of the people who saw it.)
yes, she was pregnant when she got married
No, so far there’s no confirmation she had an affair while she was married, and they’ve denied it pretty strongly. No, she wouldn’t be the first Christian woman who got a little on the side, if it were true.
No, she wasn’t named as a co-respondent in a divorce; there’s no evidence she had an affair with her husbands’ business partner. The partner tried to have his divorce records sealed because he was being harrassed by journalists who used them to get his phone number.
Yes, barring immaculate conception, Bristol appears to have had sex with her fiancee. No, Bristol didn’t receive only “abstinence-only” sex ed.
Yes, I have it on reliable report that Sarah Levi’s mom has been heard screaming “Way to go Levi!” at her future son-in-law son. No, it doesn’t appear to have been when Bristol broke the news to her family.
Note: I originally understood this story to be about Sarah, not Levi’s mom, in the context of hockey games. As such, it’s shouldn’t be in a Sarah Palin Rumors story, but I like the story too much to delete it.
yes, her 17 year old daughter is pregnant; no, the baby’s father is not an eighth grader; no, having sex at 16 is not statutory rape in Alaska
yes, she did fire the public safety guy — but he said in the Anchorage paper that, for the record, she never, and no one else in her administration ever, tried to make him fire her ex-brother-in-law
and yes, the state trooper (her sister’s ex-husband) she was worried about did: tase her 10 year old nephew; drive his state patrol car while drinking or drunk; did threaten to “bring her down”; and did threaten to murder her father and sister if they dared to get an attorney to help with the divorce.
yes, the state trooper was suspended when he was put under a court protective order
no, the trooper wasn’t fired
yes, she did fire the Wasilla Chief of Police as Mayor; yes, it was because he was lying to the City Council.
Yes, she did try to cut her own salary as Mayor by $4000 a year; yes, she had voted against the $4000 a year raise while on the City Council.
No, she didn’t cut funding for unwed mothers; yes, she did increase it by “only” 354 percent instead of 454 percent, as part of a multi-year capital expenditures program. No, the Washington Post doesn’t appear to have corrected their story. Even after this was pointed out in the comments on the story.
No, she didn’t cut special needs student funding; yes, she did raise it by “only” 175 percent.
yes, she did try, clearly unsuccessfully, to get Bristol married off to her fiancee before the story came out
yes, she did ask the librarian if some books could be withdrawn because of being offensive; no, they couldn’t; yes she did threaten to fire the librarian a month later; no, that wasn’t over the books thing but instead over administrative issues; no, the librarian wasn’t fired either; yes, the librarian was a big supporter of one of her political opponents; yes, the librarian was also the girlfriend of the Chief of police mentioned above; no, this is not the first time in the history of civiliz ation that someone has been threatened with being fired over a political dispute
No the list of books she wanted to ban that’s being passed around isn’t real; among other things, it includes a number of books published after her time in office there.
No, that hasn’t actually deterred people from claiming it really is true even if the list isn’t correct. For example:
“This list might not in fact reflect the books Sarah Palin wanted banned. As more than one person in Comments has pointed out, some of them were not published when Palin was in office. It is my hope that the mainstream media will not let this story drop and that at some point an actual list will surface. The very thought of having someone who once advocated book-banning possibly occupying one of the highest offices of our land fills me with profound dread. It should fill you with dread too.”
No, I don’t understand why a fake list is supposed to fill me with dread, either.
no, it wasn’t a shotgun wedding; Bristol and Levi been engaged for a good while according to his mother. It was either an accident or just an unconventional order.
yes, she’s an was an Assembly of God Holy Roller. No, she doesn’t attend an AoG church now. Yes, she did leave the AoG because they were getting too weird for her.
No, she’s not anti-Mormon. No, not all AoG churches are anti-Mormon. (AoG is even more hard-core about allowing each pastor and congregation to make their own decisions than the Baptists are.) (Thanks to AnonAmom in the comments.)
No, she’s not from another planet. No, I haven’t actually heard that one yet, but you wait.
yes, she apparently believes in some variant of Intelligent Design
no, she didn’t try to force the schools to teach it; she said if someone brought it up, it was an appropriate subject for debate.
No, she doesn’t believe in “abstinence only” education. Yes, she thinks abstinence is an effective way of preventing pregnancy. Duh. Yes, she believes kids should learn about condom use in schools.
yes, she kills animals and eats them, and wears their skins
yes, she was a beauty contest contestant
yes, she was once a sportscaster
yes, she has a college degree in Journalism, but20I won’t hold that against her, as she seems to have found honest work as well
yes, she sometimes wears her hair up; no that’s not a “beehive”
yes, her husband is Not A White Person (he’s a Yup’ik; an Eskimo but not an Inuit as my Inuit cousins have taken some pains to explain)
yes, she has on occasion tried to get money from the federal government.
yes, she did finally turn down the money for the bridge. Yes, that meant changing her mind about it.
yes, she was vetted extensively, not just in three days — I’ve got links to press reports about people coming to Wassila on 29 May, and we had her on our Veepstakes at PJM from the first day we ran it.
yes, she want to a bunch of colleges before getting a degree. No, that’s not illegal. Yes, she seems to have made something of herself anyway.
no, they didn’t talk to a lot of the R’s power structure during the vetting; that probably has to do with the fact that she beat them in elections and sent a bunch of them to jail.
Yes, Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech was written by a speechwriter . Duh. No, none of Obama’s, McCain’s, nor Biden’s speeches were impromptu off the cuff things either.
Yes, she did put the Governors plane on eBay. No, that’s not how it was finally sold. Yes, McCain did say it wrong. Bad McCain.
No, Sarah Palin doesn’t have such control of Alaskans that people are afraid to say bad things about her. (What, are you nuts? Look at this list.) No, I don’t think it’s likely that she called Obama “Sambo”. (Good God, man, I’m ten years older than her and I barely remember “Little Black Sambo.”) Yes, I’m sure there are people who don’t like her — I’ve talked with some myself.
Anyone who sees a new rumor, leave it in a comment. Update: The Other McCain has a better blurb than I did:
Charles Martin has established a clearinghouse for all the existing rumors about Sarah Palin, and any new ones you want to make up, if you want to try your hand at being a professional journalist like Elizabeth Bumiller.
2008-Sep-05 23:22 Update: Changed it to a numbered list. I’m beginning to think we need to start referring to these things by number.

With all due respect "Hacksaw Jim", but it seems to me the "conservatives" are the ones who seem to be reacting much worse here. And what makes you think being a conservative and/or a republican anoints ones religious beliefs or is a measure of ones "patriotism". I know it is beyond you, but you should read some of Mark Twain's remarks about patriotism. They are just as valid today as when he made them during the Spanish-American war.

True patriotism is standing up for what is right even when others blindly follow an ideology based on nothing more than populist currents. It astounds me how so many people who claim to be patriots will subjugate (careful, big word) the very principles they profess to be defending. If Bush and Cheney had had their way the Bill of Rights would have been suspended for the sake of patriotism.

My father nearly died defending his country and fighting for what was right and it disgusted him the way Bush/Cheney/Rove and company used patriotism, conservatism and religion as a weapon against people. For the sacrifice he made for his country I and I hope the majority will never succumb to the divisive, partisan mean politics which Bush and his buddies and now John McCain sadly, are perpetrating upon this country.

We can and DO deserve better than that.

Screw you liberals both in the media and Obama supporters! You just loath anything that has to do with the "WHITE CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES" and all your slants no matter how you attack is just done to alleviate your personal frustrations, so I say. Bring it on! Go ahead and foam all you want! The fact is most of you (not all) FEAR people of JUDEO-CHRISTIAN moral values and are sick of being proclaimed in politics. If Obama becomes president, do you think this country will be united? I DON'T THINK SO! Partisan division will always exist with religion as the invisible dividing line. God bless and if there truly is a 'lake of fire' in which your souls will be boiling in, I'll be sure to throw you a ice-wrapped lifevest.

Google the name Georges Sada and you will see that Iraq did have the ingredients for WMDs. But Saddam Hussien shipped them to

Yeah, Bush vetoed it because it was filled with pork barrel spending for their special interest groups. It wasn't the republicans who dismissed congress for a 5 week vacation. As a matter of fact, they wanted to stay at work and produce an energy policy that would bring the price of oil and gas down, but Mrs. Pelosi had a book tour to do and couldn't stay at work to produce for the American people of whom she was sent to serve supposedly. Check out the ratings for congress. That will tell you what the American public think of the democratic congress who have not produced anything substantial

USA went in Iraq as it supposedly had weapons of mass destructions. Well not to be found. We should have withdrawn right then. It is not up to us to demand what they do, or how they govern their country. Otherwise we can go in China, Russia etc...as well

Palin said she put the plane on ebay. That's totally accurate. The whole point is that she got rid of the wasteful plane.

Now the Washington Post wants to attack Palin because the sale of the plane on ebay fell through (even though she still sold it).

So what! That's not the point.

The Washington Post has attacked Palin relentlessly, over amazingly petty things.

Yet, the Washington Post doesn't say a peep about Obama launching his campaign from the home of a terrorist that tried to bomb the U.S. Capitol.

The Post hates Palin, but it's only made her stonger than ever.

The tide has turned and with Palin, the Republicans are now poised to win the White House in November.

IT'S A GREAT TIME TO BE A REPUBLICAN!!!!

With all due respect. There's no money in left-wing bias. American media are sycophants to wealthy corporations who sway them to the right. Your perception otherwise defies logic. You probably believe the right wing extremists media who call regular right wing media biased.

Listen to, or read "democracynow.org" so you can understand us better and fight us from a more informed position. You may not agree with us, but a least you'll know with what you're disagreeing.

Hadeze,

What about the millions of Vietnamese citizens and children who were murdered by their own government after we irresponsibly pulled out of Vietnam before pulling them from power because of the treasonous shrieking of the liberal immature babyboomers in the US?

The dissenting whiners and screamers from the left and from the media have extensive blood on their heads, and they are getting a free pass from our country and our generous president. More soldiers and Iraqi civilians have died, ridiculous amounts of money is being spent because the dissension prolongs and diminishes the possibility of victory because our division emboldens and encourages the enemy terrorists to join a cause and to persist, because they perceive that we do not have resolve to outlast them. It is unpatriotic and treasonous to dissent in times of war, and as long as Americans spit upon and abuse their freedom to tear ourselves down, it is only a matter of time before we lose them. It is too kind of Bush to let you all get away from it.

Americans are ridiculously impatient with the process of Iraqi independence. What country has EVER solved such problems in four years or less? Even our own country took around six years to get through the hostilities, and longer than that to become stable. Iraq is bigger and has more complex problems than we had at the beginning. If we leave Iraq prematurely, there will be a bloodbath, and the 80 (or so) per cent who risked their lives to vote publicly with a purple thumb will be in grave danger for their lives! There will be a bloodbath, and the blood will be on the heads of all the war naysayers.

I don't wear pink glasses. Neither does my husband. If he would be nominated today as president... he would have the same issue as kerry. He was drafted after his Law school. He either could go 4 years as lawyer OR a 9 months a special operation. Guess what he chose ? He ended up in yes Cambodia, about 80 % of his mates never made it, those parents never knew their son was there. Politics! So if you look back at his army history. The purpose of obsessing with patriotism and heroism is not only to distract us away from the repubican leadership's failures. It is also being used to intimidate us into blind allgiance.

When most of us read "Animal Farm" and "1984", we took Orwell's message as a warning. The republican leaderhip is apparently using those writings as instruction manuals.

Right wing corporate lobbyists bribe legislators (McCain has >80 lobbyists on his on his campaign staff. Obama has 0.)
Right wing corporate advertisers bribe news media. If news media look liberal to you, then you must think the extreme right is the middle.
There's no money to support liberal bias. The right wing interests are filthy rich, and what they covered gets covered.
Obama only looks good on media because he does good things and knows his stuff.
72% of media editorializing about Obama is negative. The media are practically making out with McCain.
There no money in liberal bias. All we have to motivate us is altruism. (something neocon schoolyard bullies like to ridicule.)

You certainly jumped on this huge misrepresenation a lot faster than John Kerry's fables mission to Cambodia (the one that was seared in his memory).

And a lot faster than Obama's failure to remeber sitting in the pew listening to the hate-filled rants of a racist pastor (who was also a mentor).

And a lot faster (by 10 months) than getting to the bottom of John Edwards campaign affair and love child even though the National Enquirer laid it all out for you.

Your comment that Barrack Obama has not been asked the right questions or enough questions. Are your perhaps referring to Der Spiegel or Le Monde journalists or The India Times? If you read the US press, watch US media & read US blogs then you must have observed that Obama has been spared nothing & taken thru the wringer several many times for the past 19 months and primaries in all the States of the USA.
You may also recall (a few wks past), where Obama was unofficially declared the (black) Anti-Christ on such tv programs as the venerable "McNeil-Lehrer Hour". Many other accusations were discussed: he is a Muslim, elitist, inexperienced, newcomer, too young, too black, too Hawaiian, too Indonesian, too good at teaching Law at the university level, too good at basketball - just joking.

Guilani(sic), NYC's tireless liar & bragger par excellence, 3 times wed & messily divorced prefers to accuse others for his personal & political failings, especially Barrack Obama who apparently, according to Mr. Purity of Mind, Body & Soul Rudy Guilani (sic) suffers from lack of character.

This latest accusation, for all to witness in HD, in his NY-accected tirade at the Rep. Convention - the Convention with the many, many, many (very large) USA flags & 3 million balloons.

But the press and media should show fairness and delve into the backgrounds of All those seeking office, not just a select few. The media and press have given Obama a free pass on this matter. Just answer that one question for me. To Anonymous, for your info, Clinton inherited the finacial prosperity from the Reagan/Bush eras. As for Peace, that is because he did not have the guts to stand up to the terrorists. When he was caught with his pants down, so to speak, he lobbed a cruise missile into the middle east to distract from his consultations in the Oval Office. McCain likes to reflect out loud about his broken arms & brutal solitary confinement, after his US fighter plane was brought down by the primitive Viet Cong. Nevertheless, McCain has not one kind word or one word of regret for Vietnamese families & their children below, on whom McCain (fighter hero, sans pareil) indifferently(?) dropped napalm, fragmentary & fire bombs Made in the USA.

So, what about the arms & legs & lives of Vietnamese & their children who died because of his success story - oh, did I forgot, they weren't card-carrying Republicans - so, their deaths doen't count in the American scheme of things ...after all, they were all terrorists, born terrorists for sure...

Would you rather import or make it in your own country? Also he is for other forms of energy as you very well know.

In respect of infant protection act.http://www.nrlc.org/Federal/Born_Alive_Infants/NARALonlive-born.pdf If the Roe vs Roe law in this case say it is the mom's right, this law needs to be addressed first. Every lawyer knows that. At least he DOES know the law.

lying VPs: a Republican tradition? Cheney lies every day & hates us all. Bush Jr. lied about Sadam Hussein possessing WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction), so did Powell, his creature. Cheney repeated this lie over and over, in fact, he still maintains somewhere in Irak, somewhere there are A-bombs.

So, now we have McCain & Palin both lying & playing the lie about the jet sale on eBay. McCain, 72 years unyoung, should back away from lies - he is very close to meeting St. Joseph above. Palin, the ridiculous one, couldn't tell the diff between a lie & self-aggrandizement.

In NYC or any other city of the world no one would notice her, just another neo-con gun-totting wannabee looking for heavenly glory & earthly benefits (i.e. money), but in frozen small town Alaska, population under 7 thousand, well, there she gets a shot at being the town's mayor.

That's more than good enough for McCain. After all, he wanted a serious, truthful VP. Someone who would not lie like Cheney or Bush or Powell or Rove - change is coming to Washington, McCain promises.

If McCain lies about the Palin jet's non-sale on eBay, would he also lie about his war record? Is a lot of his war record also exaggerated, distorted, just a concoction of events lied together? Could very well be. Lies have short legs & McCain is short, so are his legs.

The Anchorage Daily News ran an interesting article on September 4th about Sarah Palin that I think all voters should read because it gives you a VERY good clue as to who she is. When Sarah Palin was elected mayor of Wasilla., the city librarian was asked to remove certain books from the library. When she refused, she received a letter that she would be fired.
It is disturbing that a person who chooses to ban reading material approved by the National Library Assoc., in promoting her religious views is being considered as VP of USA.
We can not allow this to happen.

Posted by: Glen | September 6, 2008 3:23 PM | Report abuse

Why is this important? Because it is twisting the facts if not an outright lying . Just like all these people who got up at the podium saying John McCain jeopardized the support of his party because of his calling for "THE SURGE!" It wasn't about "THE SURGE!" (can't you see Stallone playing the lead in that one?), it was about immigration reform. How quickly people forget.

And yes, before you say it, Obama admitted "THE SURGE!" seems to have worked. I say nonsense! The violence last year which lead to "THE SURGE!" was more about religious, Shia/Sunni civil war than it was al Qaeda which we graciously welcomed to "Eye-raq" where it hadn't been before through our foolish actions. Nothing has changed, now al Sadr and the likes have just wised up and are simply bidding their time until we leave. Iraq was a colonial fabrication, there was no coherent country geographically as its boarders exist today. The Kurds, the Sunnis and the Shias don't like each other and when we are out of the way Iran will fill the vacuum which will force the Saudis to step in for the Sunnis. That is of course unless we really are willing to stay there for 100 years. Of course Palin said in her comments to the audience at her former church in June that we are there on a mission from G-d so I guess it is all ok.

Look, I'm an independent voter and I question everyone, but the profusion of lies and half truths I heard this past week just leaves me sick for this country and the world. Yes throw the bums out! Oops! They are OUR bums! Seems a bit disingenuous doesn't it.

McCain's pick of Palin sealed it for me, as if having Carly Fiorina as an economic adviser wasn't bad enough, as if pandering to Dodson and his ilk weren't bad enough, now he selects a populist hypo-Christian as his running mate who is so far from center it hurts. Her rudeness, lack of any sort of humility, bravado and self aggrandizement just totally turned me off, man or woman it would turn me off.

Just as Rudy (thrice married, cross dressing, lived with a gay couple, between 2 and 3, his kids won't even support him, love those small town values!) talking about morals, Mitt (former Mass governor about as east as you can get, flip-flop on everything) talking about those elitist easterners, etc., etc. I found it all rather disgusting, purposefully divisive rhetoric which only furthers the polarization of the American people.

I felt hopeful after the Democratic convention, I wanted scrub myself clean with pumice after the Republican convention. If they are trying to reach out to this independent voter they did one lousy job. You don't have to like your opponent, but you don't have to vilify and demonize them either. For all the talk of morals and Christian and small town values, it was about as diametrically opposed to those values as I can imagine. I live in a small town and I thank G-d my neighbors aren't like that! Yup, we're good Christians all right, Jesus did teach us to hate others as we love ourselves did he? Hmm...maybe that wasn't quite it.

We have a choice, we can drag each other down or we can help each other up. I'll vote for the latter.

McCain, yesterday... "She (Gov. Palin) took the luxury jet ... sold in on eBay" (unquote).

Gov. Palin, the ridiculous one, repeats this exorbitant lie ad nauseum. Why? Well, the bigger the lie (a jet, get it?), the more people believe - think about Stalin & communism's gargantuan lies about Russia's perfect legal system ... Amen, and the US believed him.

What is not a lie, it that this jet cost 2.7$ Mill (for US taxpayers). Gov. Palin, the ridiculous one, sold it for 2.1$ Mill - in fact, at a loss of 600.000$ (for US taxpayers).

If McCain & Gov. Palin, the ridiculous one, lie in unisimo once, then surely they will lie again. Once a liar, always a liar. For example, Gov. Palin sought to have her sister's ex-husband (a cop) fired... why? cause he divorced her sister.

Hey Mike,
if the fact has not relevance, why last friday diring the stomp McBush said it again that she sold it on E-Bay and made a profit? , that is basically a lie.

James on another note, so basically you are saying palin is lying...(or misleading) but eej the whole of the DEMS are lying too so get into that ... such a nonsense.

The same for... leave Palin private life alone and also her inexperience.... well if you expect that, act as you expect!. For your answer... I care what the next president is going to DO!. I can't listen to speeches wherein people smear and tell half truths and attach on fronts where they are themselves weak. Jeez, talk about how good you are, what you are intending to do ? In Palin's acceptance speech, every other word was "I" or "me", and all the corny, symbolic, show-off moves like auctioning government (AKA the people) property on eBay betray a potentially dangerous personality disorder.

Posted by: an observer | September 6, 2008 2:06 PM | Report abuse

The problem with Republicans is that they are not "nuanced" thinkers, so they fail to fully comprehend the "important" difference between offering an item for bid on Ebay and actually selling an item on Ebay. This is why it takes members of Congress huge amounts of time to fully debate all the many nuances and grey areas involved with spending your money on things that largely benefit themselves. Thank goodness we intellectual light-weights have the WaPo to help us better understand these issues.

Posted by: Virginia Mom | September 6, 2008 2:04 PM | Report abuse

The point is that she sold the plane and got rid of it. Whether it was ultimately sold on eBay or sold through a different route doesn't matter.

Posted by: Greg J | September 6, 2008 1:56 PM | Report abuse

Okay, now this is getting silly and the Washington Post is showing its true collars.

The truth is the Sarah Palin did auction off the plane on e-bay, which is the truth. It did get one bid, but the bid fell thru. And a businessman, not thru e-bay, bought the plane.

So no lie was told here by Sarah Palin.

Now if John McCain said the plane was sold on e-bay, then he needs to be corrected.

But let's not attack Sarah Palin on what she said regarding the plane and e-bay. She told the truth.

And to counter a comment on this board that Sarah Palin can read a teleprompter well, yes she can. And yes, Obama can.

We'll see how she does out on the camapign trail taking impromptu questions. Personally, I don't think Obama does this well. He fumbles a lot with his answers - and we get a lot of "ums" in his responses. When he's giving a memorized stump speech or reading a teleprompter, he's great. But off the cuff, he's not.

Posted by: Christina | September 6, 2008 1:55 PM | Report abuse

Chuck, absolutely! She is just a good teleprompter reader, a lot better that the top of the ticket, I almost felt sorry for McBush during the acceptance speak, he was so dull and confused at times he could hardly pick up with the teleprompter, on the other side Mooseburger was a really skilled reader, why she won't give an interview?

Oh, I see - the misleading comment about Ebay was just a "joke," like the pit bull with lipstick. So the opposition to the "bridge to nowhere" and earmarks was a humorous anecdote, not to be taken seriously, just like the advocacy for children with disabilities and her "visit" to Ireland! Now I get it - she's really just a stand up comedian. Yup, yup, that's the ticket.

Sarah Palin - a lot less than meets the eye. The longer we get to know her, the more disturbing it is that she's could be a 72 year old heartbeat away from the Presidency.

She lied about: 1) being against the "bridge to nowhere" - said no thanks for the money (she was for it - when it got her votes in Ketchican - before she was against it...and she has kept the money to spend on other transportation projects in Alaska); 2) opposing earmarks (more earmarks per capita in Alaska than any other state - she hired a lobbyist that brought over $4,000 in earmarks per person in Wasilla, AK while she was Mayor); 3) she "put the jet on E-bay" (sounding so "hip" - too bad it didn't sell, and that McCain, like rest of America, assumed she had also sold it "at a profit") 4) she is an advocate for children with disabilities (she line item vetoed money from the Legislative budget for that purpose as Governor of Alaska - funny way to express your "advocacy") 5) claimed she had visited Ireland, along with Kuwait, Germany, and Canada as foreign travel (she had a layover in Shannon airport on her way to Germany and Kuwait in 1986 - her first and only time out of the country besides trips to Canada).

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the vetting goes. The media has to do it, since McCain and the Republicans could obviously care less if they put a lying poser so close to the Presidency.

The woman is dangerous and we are fools to even consider promoting her to the Vice Presidency. The more you know, the less you like...

Lol it doesn't matter if I tell you or not. The libs are so blind with rage and fear at Palin that logic simply isn't an option anymore - emotion (completely dissociated from logic) has taken over. That is why Harry Reid described her as "shrill" --- he was mad and not thinking rationally about the fact that it was a stupid thing to say.

I am not saying anything that commentator after commentator have not been warning you about for a week --- and still, the slime persists!!! Don't you realize that you have completely inoculated Palin against any "real" attacks now? Nobody is gonna believe you anymore!!! Time to reread the story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf lol ...

To prove my point: look at the most recent poll numbers on McCain (Rasmussen has a new poll today). He has already halved Obama's lead with women from 14 points to 7 and is 1 point ahead of Obama in terms of total popularity.

The fear and hatred from the left that this is engendering is already completely overriding rational thought and will continue to do so as the full effects of the RNC bounce are felt. You guys have already dug yourselves into a huge hole ... so thanks! We didn't even need to give you the shovel!

Hillary vs Palin in 2012

Posted by: Panic | September 6, 2008 12:11 PM | Report abuse

The country has only known Mrs. Palin through her introduction and nomination for VP and through her acceptance speech. And the national press is being kept away from learning anything else about her. Yet she's one step from the presidency. And on top of that in her own words on video in church she believes that the troops in the Iraq war was a Holy war from God, given to our national leaders, Pres. Bush,Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and others. I would like to know more about her views. Also, should she have stood up and told her Pastor that she supports Israel when he said the things that he said in her presence while at her church? Have we gone completely mad in this country? She made two national speeches and she is one step away from the presidency.
They have have manipulated her. They are keeping her away from the national press, until she's ready. The question is ready for what? We knew and learned everything about Hillary on the campaign trail. So much so that I am comfortable enough calling her "Hillary." We need to know more about Mrs. Palin views. For we are now learning the plane was not sold on ebay(John McCain himself said so). We're also learning of the earmarks that she recieved. We're learning that the $250 million dollar "bridge to know where" money that was never return to the US treasury. What candidate in this race is under investigation...PalinThis is our country we're talking about here. And it is about country first. And I'm not ready to hand it over on two national speeches both of which was made at the republican convention. For some it may be a popularity contest. Well, perhaps if the country saw all of those "Body Bags" coming through Dover Air Force Base, this campaign would be about real issues and answers.

Palin did not say she sold the plane on Ebay. She said she put it on Ebay. We put things one ebay. The article claims she said she sold the plane on ebay are total lie. Those we believed should check the fact before comment and spread the vicious rumor.

Obama doesn't have any record to back his claim. He is much less qualified to be president than Palin (by the way, palin is only running for VP at this time). He is probably much less qualified than most of us community organiers. Get over with it,

If he cannot even reach out to Hillary (VP), how can he bring people together and get anything done.

he is not qualified and he will not get my Hillary vote. Now, it's too late to regret not picking Hillary as running mate (He is too narrow-minded to be president). We have palin.

Obama: Graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard Law School; received contract and advance to write a book ("Dreams from my Father") as well as a fellowship at the University of Chicago Law School. Directed the Illinois Project Vote from April to October 1992, a voter registration drive with a staff of 10 and 700 volunteers that achieved its goal of registering 150,000 of 400,000 unregistered African Americans in the state, leading Crain's Chicago Business to name Obama to its 1993 list of "40 under Forty" powers to be. Appointed as a Lecturer in constitutional law at the University of Chicago. Joined Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland, a 12-attorney law firm specializing in civil rights litigation and neighborhood economic development. Active in several community organizations, usually as a board member.

Where do you start with this dysfunctional family...

A rebellious pregnant teen, who I doubt will get married because the baby daddy stated he didn't want kids, plus he calls himself a self admitted f-king redneck who likes to shoot the sh** and play hockey and has been a trouble. And hell yes, Bristol's knocked up status is an issue. That was decided the moment her selfish moma decided to thrust her in the spotlight. And what is it with the right making teen pregnancy "acceptable?"

A moma whose water breaks before she is scheduled to give a speech in houston, refuses to go the the hospital, knows that infection is possible, knows she has a special needs child , takes a an eight hour plan ride home, with a layover. That's not courageous, that's just selfish ambition and child abuse. Also, that's not judgement.

A father who was a member of the Alaska Independent Party form 1997 to 2002. A party that advocates succession from the United States. Where's hi patrotism? Does he even pledge allegiance to the flag? This was also a party that the pitbull decided to send a videotape message to congratulating them on their 2008 convention and extolled how important they were to Alaskan fiber.

The moma used her power to get a brother in law fired because the sister is going through a nasty divorce and custody battle. And what the hell was the husband doing involved in the firing?

The National Enquirer is saying that she screwed her successionist husband's business partner. Funny how republicans where happy that NE went after John Edwards and complained that the oooohhhh so liberal mainstream media was protecting him, but now that NE is on pitbull's a***, it's disgusting and even yes, sexist.

Let's see what else...
She's lied about the plane being sold and the state making a profit from the sale on Ebay...no plane on ebay sold and no profit. Such a lie.

She has looked in the personnel files of employees and has a complaint against her for that.

She admitted that she even know what a vice president did. The POW once said that the only job of a VP would be to check on the health of the president and go to funerals of 3rd world dictators. What an opportunity for The pitbull to travel, at taxpayer expense, and get some foreign policy experience because living next door to russia and visiting Kuwait and Germany having a layover in Ireland does not give you any foreign policy cred. Nor does serving on an energy board, (yeah, she is claiming this as fp experience) where you were not the first pick, where your only responsiblity was to set up meetings.

She left the town of Wasilla in millions of debt

She served as chairman of indicted Ted Stevens 527

She was for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it and even campaigned on its construction. When the project became a joke and would not be fully funded, she flipped flopped and said no, took partial funds available. No damn reformer.

No doubt there will be much more about this Jerry Springer show family coming forth whether by that elitist mainstream media or the rags, and that's good. Someone needs to vet her because The POW campaign sure as hell didn't.

Any thinking American should be offended about the audacity of the right for propping her up before the American people as if she has any qualifications. For the republicans looking for another choice consider Bob Barr or Chuck Baldwin. We simply cannot let this woman anywhere near the white house.

In any event she will become the second most powerful person for sure. (Democrats are spineless and can't take on the Karl Rove machinery.) The more we find out about her the more we realize that her biography is not as we were told and that there may be some hidden skeletons.

Finally, I believe that the Rove machinery has scared the crap out of the media. The media are asking superficial questions and handling Palin like she is an egg about to break at any time. The last time the media got the crap scared out of them we found ourselves in a war. Sorry but the media are...kittens. Here is an exapmple of what I am talking about. CNN sent Kyra Phillips to investigate Palin's background. All she found in Alaska was Palin's sister. Phillips, the investigative reporter, went on to say that she would love to go hunting and have a drink with Palin. This after controversies surrounded Palin.

Well what are you going to do? This is America. Hide your head in the sand and pray for the rapture.

Hey Patriot-
Obama chose service of the poor and despised over wealth and corporate collusion. He ended up wealthy anyway, so what? His insight is evident to those us who chose service over corporate sycophancy.
If by "the one", you insinuate Obama is an antichrist, You're wrong.

Reagan is a ONE, "who is and is not"
The number of letters in Ronald Wilson Reagan repeat 6 6, and 6. People literally worship him and choose "What Would Reagan Do?" over "What Would Jesus Do?"

If McCain really wants to "destroy evil" as he grandiously states, he needs to start with his own party.

That was one of the lines from her speech that made me look up. She put the plane on eBay? That's a stupid way to sell a plane, I thought.

And stupid it turned out to be, but it was a great applause line, so great that John McCain heard what she implied and is now using her SELLING of the plane on eBay, and for a PROFIT, as an applause line, too.

Sorry, John, but it wasn't quite like that, and didn't you think it a little strange that YOU need a plane to get around Arizona, but Gov. Palin didn't need a plane to get around "the biggest state in the country"?

Maybe someone could tell me just how she does get around the state, much of which has no roads. Or does she not visit the remote parts. Driving herself around the entire state is an unbelievable joke.

This is a retarded mindset of a people in a deep denial of truth and common sense simply to save face of a failed party that I used to beleive in. Incredible trash. And you call yourself a newspaper?

So, McCain got a couple things mixed. So what? The meaning of what Palin did is the same. How can you call yourselves "journalists?" Really.

And the Troopergate story? Since you spent all the money to send a "journalist" to Alaska, one would expect he'd get the whole story, instead of just that half he wanted to create a smear.

Facts not presented by your "journalist:"
1) Palin has cooperated fully, even volunteering info not known to exist by the investigators.
2) The person was let go from his job because he wasn't a team player, wasn't performing and he declined a lateral move.
3) The allogations only surfaced after, the guy left office.

Analysis of Troopergate:

1) the guy's probably trying to set himself up for a multimillion dollar civil lawsuit.
2) the Washington Post intentionally left out lots of information in their reporting because they are not a newspaper, buy a yellow rag that works for the Democratic party and has no interest in the truth

So glad we have dedicated reporters that can jump on these important stories. Now that we've got this cleared up, can someone PLEASE find out and explain to me what kind of Community Organizing Sen Obama did in Chicago back in the 90's?

Posted by: Michael Palin | September 6, 2008 10:58 AM | Report abuse

Maybe we should call her Pontius Palin, the governor who persecutes the community organizers who sacrifice themselve to help others. (Unlike McCain, who truly did offer up himself, five taxpayer-owned aircraft, and lots of vital stratigic information.)
Speaking of McCain, I know he chose a path which caused him to suffer horribly, but by destroying so many American aircraft, and giving, (understandably, during torture), vital classified information to the enemy; it's hard to believe America didn't end up worse off for his brave service. We need to judge outcomes, rather than intentions. As president, McCain could due a similarly heroic job, leading many to suffer greatly for a misguided policy which ends in defeat, and humiliation. Pride makes it hard to admit mistakes, but pride is a sin (if you beleive the communty organizer, Jesus), who's example, unlike Reagan's, we are supposed to follow.

The point is that the plane was not sold on e-bay. What is a fact is the McCain campaign has gotten allot of money from e-bay founder. That probably accounts for the feel good fairy tale of the e-bay sale. Again no strait talk from the McCain convention. Just an opportunity for the e-bay founder to speak at length in prime time.

it's unbelievable how the media is falling all over Palin, eating out of her hand... In the meantime, if they question her, the Republicans jump all over them, and blame the Democrats for sexism. Is it sexism for pointing out that Palin cut funding for unwed mothers, and sex education? Is it sexism to challenge the few claims that Palin and McCain can make on her this record. She says she said "no thanks" to the bridge to nowhere. That would have been after she said yes, and after she took and spent the money? I'm yet to see a claim that she has made where she has actually told the truth.

Jesus organized a community, He was, therefore, a community organizer. So if Palin wants to lead her party's faithful in disparaging a group which, unavoidably, includes Jesus, it puts her right in line with the uninformed positions of the G.O.P. which consistently oppose the Principles they profess. No surprise, Pontius Pilate, like Palin, was a governor.

The point isn't whether or not she actually sold it on Ebay but that her record is so thin that the McFlipFlop campaign has to invent things to make her sound good. Is this really someone who should be in any position of power? She talks about all her experience as a mayor of a town with 5,000 people preparing her to lead the free world, but she neglects to point out that the town was actually run by a city manager. The Republican powers that be in Alaska pressured her to accept a city manager after she screwed up badly soon after taking office. Maybe McFlipFlop should have selected the city manager for his VP.

As for the kooky comments on this message board suggesting things that the press should be looking into about Obama, it becomes painfully obvious that the same mentality that believes that Bush and Cheney planned 9/11 is alive and well and living in the Ratwing.

PALIN'S LIES ADD UP:

Sarah Palin lied about the earmarks she sought but claimed to be against ($27 million dollars in earmarks sought as mayor and almost $200 million dollars in earmarks sought as governor in 2008).

Palin lied about her support for the "bridge to nowhere" that she now claims she was against (she took the federal money anyways, $233 to $398 million depending on who's counting).

Apparently Palin has also been deceptive about supporting "the road to nowhere" ($39 to $375 millions more dollars, again, dpending on who's counting).

Palin lied about "Troopergate." Palin claimed that her office didn't try to pressure anyone, except that her office DID pressure a LOT of people inappropriately.

Palin was FOR an investigation of "Troopergate" and now there's a full blown coverup of Troopergate by Republicans in Alaska with the help McCain.

The same McCain that lied FOR Palin about her selling Alaska's government jet on ebay (when she knew she actually sold the jet to a crony friend for less than 75% of what it cost to buy).

The same McCain that lied to Larry King and said that his Vice Presidential pick would be on his show, but now has to carefully stage Palin's public appearances until they're able to train a reporter to ask easy questions (fortunately after Brokeback Church's "cone of silence" nonsense McCain knows how to cheat on oral tests just as easily as he repeatedly cheated on his first wife).

McCain did though truthfully mentioned "profit," profit in this case that was made by Republican crony who got government property for cheap after a small investment in a corrupt politician. If anyones been keeping track of Palin's friend Ted Stevens and the Veco scandal in Alaska they know that buying politicians is a proud Republican tradition that they practice just well in Alaska as in every other state of the Union where there's a Republican politican. Is the Media ever going to ask her about this out and out lie - if they ever get the chance seeing as how McCain is shielding her from taking questions - or will this be forgetten when the next scandal about her family comes to light? It seems problematic that when you are being introduced to the American people as your chance to vie for the second most powerful job in the land - and maybe the number one spot - that you would not do so by saying out and out lies. I'm a recruiter for the organization I work for and candidates that lie on the applications or on their interviews are never hired or terminated. Too bad America doesn't pick its elected leaders the same way. ========================================
McCain had better check his facts about Palin before saying things like "sold it on eBay" because Palin only said "put it on eBay". And yes, the plane was indeed sold and brought $2.1 millions in to the state coffer. It was a profit in the sense that if it hadn't been sold, not only the $2.1 millions could not be there, but also would have drained more money from the state of Alaska for upkeep and the hiring of mechanics and pilots. Don't forget, the price of an used luxury plane is worth much less than a brand new one. Keeping the plane instead of selling it will only make it worth less and less over time.
One can also imagine that when former Alaska governor Frank H. Murkowski purchased the plane with state money, he did not care to search and haggle so the $2.7 millions could simply be too much even for a brand new plane.
By selling the plane as soon as she took office, Palin indeed brought a profit to the state.

The bridge to nowhere story was a lie.

And few are pointing out that Alaska receives more earmarks per capita than any state and that it ranks 47th in terms of population.

Earmarks equal $295 per Alaskan while other states got $34 per person. As mayor she did very well in securing the earmarks, hiring a lobbyist to go to Washington.

Let's talk about the issues and call candidates on lying.

That is, they bought their used-car Bidenmobile based on the smooth talking salesman at "Obama Eastern Autos". But their Republican neighbor found a flashy sports car. Now Dem/Libs want to go back to "Hillary Motors", but are afraid they will look like foolish customers. They worry the salesperson there will now take advantage of them and the price will be too high. Such is the peril of buying a "Katrina car" in Obama/Biden. Jeez, ever heard of CarFax? Perhaps the Dem/Lib can put it on E-bay and get some money back. Just don't make the reserve too high.

More deception from St. Palin the Republican "reformer." She's blatantly lied about the Bridge to Nowhere shenanigans: she was before it before it started to stink and the gov't put the ax to it (but she still took the money for other Palin pet projects). She's been stonewalling on Troopergate - first denying any wrongdoing, theen getting caught up in lies and backtracking, now, with the help of the McCain campaign, is hiring hot shot lawyers to run the investigation into the ground. She's the same as the corrupt Republican politicians we already have in office. Heck, she even worked for Ted Stevens' 527 group. This isn't about Obama/Biden. I agree with this post. Palin only said that she put it on eBay, which was not misleading at all. She honestly did try to sell it on eBay and she did sell it when she found a buyer who would go through with the deal.
On the other hand, the title of Anne E. Kornblut's piece IS misleading. Her editor should have caught that and made her change to a more appropriate title.

In reference to the "luxury jet" in her speech, Palin said she "put it on eBay." She didn't say she "sold it" on eBay. What exactly is the gripe? If she lied and didn't put the plane on ebay at all, or didn't even sell it, or still actually uses it, then you would have a story.

Governor Palin said she put the airplane on Ebay for sale. She did not say she sold the plane on Ebay.
(And why do you think she stopped there? Why didn't she say, but it didn't sell, so it was a waste of time. I lost 600K on the deal. Guess it was a stupid idea.)

What a DUMBAS$! What kind of moron puts a multi-million dollar jet on eBAY. Did she really think that a series buyer looking for a jet plane would look to eBAY to purchase one? Oh, i forgot, according to the other DUMBAS$, rich is considered making $5 million dollars per year. Those poor middle class people making 4 mill a year, they may be interested in buying a jet on eBAY.

Up here in Alaska, the statement that caused us to go, "huh?" was this one: "I fought to bring about the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history. And when that deal was struck, we began a nearly forty billion dollar natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence."

Nobody has begun anything. This summer our Legislature approved awarding a license to a Canadian-based company for the pipeline (which will go through Canada, not Alaska). We've committed to giving them $500 MILLION as part of the deal. The company won't even begin soliciting commitments from the producers until 2010. There is real doubt about this deal ever turning into anything real.

So why did she say we "began" it? Because it sounds better, I guess. Because her record is so thin she'll have to exaggerate or fabricate or it will blow away. (Commander of National Guard, foreign policy experience what with Russia being so near, etc.).

She did say she put the jet on eBay. It was McCain who completely overstated what she did--which he's doing consistently, I'll give him that.

But of course the real point is that the press can't ask her what she meant or give her a chance to clarify because McCain isn't about to risk having us discover how little she's done and how little she knows. That would be fatal to his campaign.

No wonder the press is all about Bristol, etc. What else is there to talk about?

And BTW, I heard this earlier on TV: We're supposed to believe she can take on Putin, but they're complaining that Campbell Brown is mean to her?

Please.

Wade,

Actually, no, putting a large item like this up on eBay is not at all unusual. Increasingly, states have done this with big-ticket items. Some states have sold ferries this way. Others have sold planes, cars, and other surplus items. Granted, these items don't always sell on eBay, but enough have that many states do use eBay as a surplus clearinghouse.

I was suspicious about the Ebay comment when I first heard it. Financially it's obviously a stupid way to sell a multi million dollar item like a plane and would almost certainly attract a discount of at least $0.5m from its real worth. From a political perspective however it's brilliant because it's the type of "clever", "out of the box" "fighting the establishment" idea that millions of ordinary Americans might have and would therefore identify with.

From a 45 minute speech the 40 million Americans watching and the many more watching edited highlights will probably come away with/remember a maximum of half a dozen factoids which will colour their perception of Palin. The truth "I sold an old aircraft the former Governor used to use for a loss to a party donor" doesn't sound nearly as compelling. I suspect McCain hadn't been told the truth either (after all he's just met her for 15 minutes), otherwise he would have chosen his words more carefully too.

Republican Palin is a serial liar: she supported the 1/4 billion dollar "bridge to nowhere" but repeatedly claimed she didn't, Palin then sought another 1/5 of a billion dollars in earmarks and then lied about rejecting earmarks.

Palin allowed McCain to lie on her behalf with the false claim that she sold the "Jet on ebay" when she knew that was a lie and in fact sold the plane to a crony for a loss (a BIG loss).

Palin claimed she worked against the "ol boys" but used indicted Republican Ted Steven's connections to get the earmarks she falsely claimed to reject (and was even in an advertisement with corrupt ol boy Ted Stevens where she used him to leverage support for her).

Now Palin is hiding from the press and evading investigations in Alaska regarding her abuse of power in a vindictive attempt to fire a cop that divorced her sister.

Republican's love Palin because she can lie with a smile and then play the gender card as if it absolves her of corruption, cronyism, and abuse of power.

McCain loves Palin because it distracts from the fact that he's a man that doesn't know how many houses he owns, didn't know Sunni from Shia, didn't know the borders of Pakistan, forgets the names of major world leaders, didn't know Czechoslovakia hasn't been a country for 15 years, and thinks that after a week of vicious Republican attacks on the Democrats by what is now HIS party, that HE can claim the mantle of ending "rancor" in Washington. Perhaps he should have a word with his viciously rancorous Vice Presidential candidate.

But apparently Palin is being sequestered until the Republicans can teach the media to ask her easy questions.

We're spliting hairs here. Did she lie? No. Did she mislead the American people? Yes. But what politician hasn't. I'm a flaming liberal, but this is a non-story.

My primary issue with Palin is; Six years as mayor of a town of less than 5000 people and 20 months as governor of a state with less than 700,000 people vs. eight years as a state legislator from a major metropolitan city and four years as U.S. Senator from fifth most populated state in the country? Experiance?

FWIW, Alaska purchased the Jet for $2.7 million in 2005.

So it took a $600,000 hit on the sale after two years.

http://alaskafalcon.com/Alaska_State_Jet.html

The pricing depends on the mileage and the market -- still probably would have been best to have shopped the jet out of state in order to remove any appearance of a conflict of interests -- rather than selling it in state to a GOP donor with connections to state politicians.

At least that's how an ethics reformer would have done it.

Who bought the plane?

GOP donor Larry Reynolds -- his wife gave $1,000 to the Alaska State Legislature Speaker of the House, John Harris, in 2006.

Via the SwampBlog:
"The 23-year-old 10-seat Westwind II was sold in August 2007 for $2.1 million to a Valdez, Alaska, entrepreneur; that's about $300,000 less than a broker's asking price, according to news accounts."

And a discussion about about the relation between Rezko and Obama, should not over shadow McSame's relationship with Charles Keeting.

The Biden choice was one made out of fear and inexperience.

So here's how to fix the problem:
Vote for McCain / Palin this round. Why not? Lots of other women will!

Here's why:
Once you smash the glass ceiling by voting in Gov. Palin as your VP, the ticket for 2012 will most surely look like this:

Anyone ever sell a two-year-old car?

Any get more money than you paid for it?

~

If this were a business that had purchased a jet for $2.7 million and sold it two years later for $2.1 million...they would more than likely have to show a GAIN on the sale of the business asset.

Why? Simple - during the two years that the business had the asset, the business would be able to claim depreciation on the asset, which would reduce the taxable income of the business. When that business then sells the asset, they have to calculate the gain or loss on the sale, which is basically:

(Sale Price + Allowable Depreciation) - (Purchase Price + Sales Expense)

In this case, the allowable depreciation from 2005 - 2007 would be somewhere around $900,000 (using straight-line depreciation of an asset with a 6-year class life). We'll assume the sales expense - the commission payable to the plane broker who sold the plane - was somewhere around 3% (just a guess). That gives us:

(2,100,000 + 900,000) - (2,700,000 + 63,000) = 3,000,000 - 2,763,000 = GAIN on sale of asset of 237,000

I am far from a fan of Palin (GoBama!), but this is a non-story. How about we attack her for leaving Wasilla with $20 million in debt for an indoor sports facility that is still operating at a loss - six years after she left office.

After reading the shocking story Joe Biden told about a hard working truck driver who was involved in an unfortunate accident with his family, I am wondering why would Obama choose him as a running mate?

If the truck driver was related to you would you like it if Joe Biden told everybody that he was drunk when all police reports show that he was sober???

The Gov, says that she wanted to get rid of some stuff so she put it on ebay. That's what I do.

Yeah, AK didn't make a profit over the original sticker price, but then again, few used vehicles do. What was the going rate for that kind of plane at the time, and what did AK get for it.....there may be the confusion over the term 'profit'.

Gov. Palin has repeatedly said over the last two days that “the surge has succeeded”. That’s interesting, because as of 9/5/08, there are still 146,000 American troops in Iraq, thousands more then before the surge. Military leaders in Iraq are asking to hold off on troop reductions. The U.S. still spends $10 billion a month in Iraq. The Iraqi government still has not taken responsibility, not only to govern their country, but to use a significant amount of their $80 billion surplus towards rebuilding Iraq. So this is success? If it is success, why aren’t we already reducing troop levels, at least down to the pre-surge level? Sen. Obama has said, many times, that the surge has helped to reduced violence, but has not changed the political or economic issues in Iraq that the surge was supposed to support. The fact we still can’t reduce levels is not a sign of success. It has however prevented us from refocusing on Afghanistan, where we left the real war on terror, and where we are now seeing the highest levels of American casualties, a number that has been rising every month. Now U.S. military leaders in Afghanistan are asking for more support, and we don’t have troops available, because we sent them into a country that they should never have been fighting in. So this is success?

Tom -- not that you'll actually pay attention to this, but Michelle Obama has served this country.

She quit a lucrative and prestigious job to work in outreach in the Chicago city government. She spent several years establishing a CityYear program in Chicago -- a year of voluntary public service by mostly young people. Michelle organized the program and got it well-funded and functional.

She then went to work with the University of Chicago, which is running most of the non-profit hospitals in the city, to create a network of community clinics.

Tom, I presume you are unfamiliar with poor communities. But in most big cities, the uninsured only get health care when they are sick and go to the ER. It's expensive and counterproductive.

Michelle worked hard to encourage uninsured Chicagoans to use those clinics, which would give them better health care and, preferably, keep them from the ER.

And she's done this while paying off student debts and rearing her two girls.

Tom, if you are writing because you support McCain, you have betrayed what McCain says is his primary purpose: to move beyond this nasty partisan sniping.

it was sold there.

Posted by: Karen | September 5, 2008 10:10 PM | Report abuse

It is clear that if this is true, she lied to the American people. You can quibble that it is semantically correct the way she said it, but then she was misleading. McCain clearly knew what he was saying.

In terms of the numbers someone posted "

The plane was purchased for $2,692,600 in November 2005. The state began paying it off at a rate of $62,492.79 per quarter. So in August 2007 the outstanding balance would have been about $2,192,657. A sale for $2,100,000 would not appear to be a profit, but not much of a loss either. Just about enough to pay off the note and call it even.

Posted by: BAMC | September 5, 2008 5:05 PM "

Indeed, you do not compare it to the amortized number. You pay the full price and when you say you sold at a profit it means you sold for more than you paid, not for the unamortized balance. That means she lost money. A lot, which does not negate it might be a better decision to sell, but it does make it clear that that would also then have been a lie. Or, she does not understand what a profit is.

If this isn't CORRUPTION, I don't know what qualifies. She sells it at a lower price and gets campaign contributions in return?

"But in fact, the jet did not sell on eBay.

Reynolds made campaign contributions to both Palin and Harris in 2006 and 2007."

Posted by: Mike in Santa Maria, CA | September 5, 2008 8:39 PM | Report abuse

No, no, no. John McCain said today that his favorite part of the speech was when she said, "She sold the last Gov's plane on eBay. (pause) Made a profit!" Then he laughed, big. She either told the truth about the plane to Bush's speech writers who chose to spin the truth with the line, "put it on eBay" or she lied to McCain.

Either way someone lied (several times during her first 4 speeches). These folks are not obeying the bible. It's the spirit of the law not the letter of the law, remember? So, if I just have to lust after a woman to commit adultery then spinning the truth in her speech to her advantage is lying.

So, we Republican, Independent and Democratic Christians who vote McCain/Palin are voting for a lying, adulterous, un-self controlled (in school & on the Senate floor), unbaptized man whose running mate put down community organizers (Jesus being the best one the world has ever seen or known), lied, and may have had an affair (appearance of evil or maybe defrauded her husbands partner), not to mention the abuse of the power God gave her and trusted her with.

She also doesn't keep her house in order (The first rule of serving over others in the Bible). Her house is not protected by God as well since it's the husband who's supposed to be at the "gates of the city" not the wife and the evidence is that her daughter (who couldn't live up to the abstinence training she got at home) was TOTALLY unsupervised during courting.

It's not McCain supporter's fault that their candidates were so hateful (murderous) during their speeches but I do think it is untruthful to say that Christians should vote for Republicans only. This has been pounded into my head from the pulpit, just like Palin's pastor did it to her, for years! Her pastor has now pulled all his sermons off the church's website- I say he should let his "light" shine.

All of these political parties are equally guilty of sins and I think we Christians should see that since this balance is tarred then the Republican's are not the only answer for fundamentalist (like my family) and casual Christians (that don't press into the bride of Christ).

Obama, McCain, Barr, Nader, and Paul ALL are not sinless and neither are their parties. I am going to do something that Palin's pastor and my pastor thinks puts my salvation in question.

I am voting for a Democrat this time!!

I'm doing it because I don't think Obama is the devil "appearing as an angel of light," anymore! I prayed, I KNOW that my decision is of God and is going to bring our country closer to a christian state then any Republican could. I know now that they are wolves in sheep's clothing and should be shot down from an aircraft, if necessary.

I am so tired of Republicans bringing out Abortion, Terrorism and Gay Rights every time their is an election. If we had a Republican President, Senate, Bench, and MSM they still would NEVER get rid of Roe V Wade and Gay Rights.

I know, now, that those 2 issues are Republican's BEST fundraiser, vote netter, march gatherer, and people organizer. They will NEVER overturn anything, Christians. I implore you to not be a 2 issue voter because besides those 2 issues the Republicans have nothing else for Christians.

We get spoiled in America. Do you know how hard it is to be a Christian in Brazil, Namibia, China, Bangladesh, or in the inner cities of Europe. We need to know that America will never be that heaven on earth and we need to start letting Cesear have what is Cesear's and Govern with love. We can only except people the way Jesus does, just the way they are. They will know us by our love. I really trust that now and am okay with the Democratic platform issues that I don't agree with.

I'm voting for a democrat, for the first time in my life and I feel BLESSED! Pray about it and then join me if you hear that still small voice calling for you to help the least of these among us in America.

2. If all she wants to communicate is that "she sold it", and the sale was not made in e-Bay, What point is there in mentioning e-Bay?

3. NOT having sold in e-Bay during one year, or whatever, would be a failure of an effort, wouldn't it? Yet she wants to pose it as a pride?

4. She sold it at a loss (to a campaign contributor?) through a broker.

4. All leads to the obvious fact of that being premeditated deceit. And she keeps repeating it. That's cynicism!

As an EBay Power Seller, let me clarify that "putting" something on EBay does not mean that it will be sold on EBay. So, if the plane was listed on EBay, then Palin's statement is factually accurate.

Many items listed on EBay need to be relisted and will often later be sold there or by other methods for less than the original asking price.

But let's cut to the chase: she disposed of a luxury the state did not need. It is absurdly picayune to fail to acknowledge that, in itself, is commendable.

Republicans have us at war in two countries as a result of Republican lies and deceptions, and we might be in two more wars--Iran and Pakistan--by November. We have alienated the entire Muslim world and most of the rest.

The dollar has lost 60% of its value against the euro, and the once mighty dollar is losing its reserve currency role.

The Republicans' policies have driven up the price of both oil and gold by 400%.

Inflation is in double digits. Employment is falling rapidly.

The Republican economy in the 21st century has been unable to create net new jobs for Americans except for low wage domestic services such as waitresses, bartenders, retail clerks and hospital orderlies.

Republican deregulation brought about fraud in mortgage lending and dangerous financial instruments which have collapsed the housing market, leaving a million or more homeowners facing foreclosure. The financial system is in disarray and might collapse from insolvency.

The trade and budget deficits have exploded. The US trade deficit is larger than the combined trade deficits of every deficit country in the world.

The US can no longer finance its wars or its own government and relies on foreign loans to function day to day. To pay for its consumption, the US sells its existing assets--companies, real estate, toll roads, whatever it can offer--to foreigners.

Republicans have run roughshod over the US Constitution, Congress, the courts and civil liberties. Republicans have made it perfectly clear that they believe that our civil liberties make us unsafe--precisely the opposite view of our Founding Fathers. Yet, Republicans regard themselves as the Patriotic Party.

The Republicans have violated the Nuremberg prohibitions against war crimes, and they have violated the Geneva Conventions against torture and abuse of prisoners. Republican disregard for human rights ranks with that of history's great tyrants.

The Republicans have put in place the foundation for a police state, which they have no problem using against fellow citizens!

We must get the Republicans totally out of power, or we will have no country left for any of us!

It seems to that YOU are the liar.

Palin never said she sold the plane on ebay. She said "I put it on ebay". That is, according to your article, a factual statement.

It is reasonable for McCain to assume that she meant "she sold it on ebay", but she never said it.

Caught up in silly symbols and partisan statements about someone none of us really knows. How about a President Idol, where people read from a telepromter and the best peaker of someone's else's written words wins.

We have serious, serious problems, folks-and neither party is required to seriously address them. They'd both rather tell what we want to hear--vapid crap.

Al Gore invented the internet and Sarah Palin sold a jet on eBay!

How sad that Anne Kornblut has stooped to this level. While Sarah Palin may have inferred that she sold the plane on Ebay, she actually spoke the truth. Anne Kornblut has done the same thing with her article title: "Plane Not Sold on Ebay". Anne has actually spoken the truth but inferred Sarah is lying. What a hypocrite!!

Why would you try to sell a jet on ebay? You might sell it but wouldn't listing it with plane brokers be the way to do it?

Posted by: Paul | September 5, 2008 6:23 PM | Report abuse

I heard that the guy who bought the plane was a campaign contributer .If that's the case ,this is a matter for investigation by congress since he purchased the plane bellow the price and later donate money to her campaign .This smells like white collar crime or money laundry !!!!!!

It may be that Anne Kornblut and her liberal media posse are so red and green with jealousy that a woman who has accomplished so much does not share their values. What next, Palin was a member of a fringe Alaskan Independance Party? Please go back to journalism school or ANY educational institution that teaches both ethics and research methods.

The fact is that listing any significant item on Ebay acts like a giant advertisement sign and increases the likelihood of an eventual sale.

Dear Anne yesterday that blowhard Joe Biden called her the Lt governor.

Why didn't you write a piece how out of it Joe Biden is.

Joe Biden the man who told a voter he had a higher IQ.

Joe Biden the man who has 5 draft deferments.

Joe Biden the man who said he was the only one who got a college scholorship and his endless lies.

Joe Biden the plagarizer.

Joe Biden who is close to Rezko's right hand man.

No we can't talk about Joe Biden the third most liberal senator in the senate.

Joe Biden a man of many lies.

So Sarah said she put the plane on Ebay. And she did, in fact, put the plane on Ebay. Why did you write this article?

US weekly implied that Sarah's life was riddled with "Babies, Lies and Scandals" ... when the editor claims the "Lies" were about the bloggers. mmm hhmm, right.

So Ms. Kornblut, why don't you use your pen to reject evil implications about a 17yr.old girl instead of defending the integrity of a piece of aircraft.

A quip is a quip. "I put it on Ebay" was not a lie. You are a waste of time, madam.

Look enough already you media elites.

Palin got the lt governor to run against corrupt don young. Don Young had been in washington for 35 years and is a crook and Palin took him on.

Palin taxed the oil companies while Obama gave them a tax break.

Palin gave residents property taxes.

Palin also did away with the governor's chef.

Palin told the oil companies use it or lose it as exxon was buying all the reserves.

Palin called the real id act the real beast.

Palin had the state attorney general go after the oil companies.

Palin quit a committee which the corrupt former attorney general was on.

Palin has cut spending and balanced a budget in alaska.

What has Obama done.

Obama bought land from Rezko while he was under federal investigation for influence peddling.

The face of the media are the US weekly covers. The owner is an Obama supporter. Compare the US weekly cover of Obama to Palin.

Enough already with this extremist Obama.

The guy is the most liberal senator out there.

He has been close to rezko, father pfleger, wright for 20 years.

Four teenagers arrested in Mat-Su bus vandalism

Alaska State Troopers on Monday arrested four young men suspected of vandalizing buses in the Mat-Su School District last week.

Three of the four suspects are charged as juveniles. A 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds were arrested at their homes and taken to the Mat-Su Youth Facility.

Eighteen-year-old Deryck Harris was also arrested at his home and taken to Mat-Su pretrial, where he was charged as an adult.

Troopers spokesman Greg Wilkinson says all four have been charged with criminal mischief, trespassing and conspiracy to commit criminal mischief.

The 16-year-old suspect also is charged with theft and furnishing alcohol to a minor. Police allege he stole a bottle of vodka from a local liquor store the night of the vandalism and supplied it to the group.
---
Vandals last Tuesday removed valve stems from the tires from nearly half the district's bus fleet.

Troopers say 69 tires were deflated on more than 40 buses.

Also, engine block heaters had been unplugged on 110 buses, preventing them from starting in the sub-zero temperatures.

The damage forced school officials to close 31 of the district's 36 schools.

I'm underwhelmed by McCain/Palin and the ebay story is ridiculous. She is so adept at stretching the truth and telling tall tales, she nicely fits into Washington as it now is. But, on the other hand, Washington is already crawling with the likes of her.

McCain/Palin may enthuse rural voters, but how many others will be turning their backs? The election cannot be won by rural, evangelical voters alone. John McCain's judgment in choosing his running mate was abysmal.

Sarah Palin is the true Paris Hilton of politicians. She's famous for being famous. Especially among conservatives. But the inside-the-beltway hysteria of GOP coastal elites and wealthy Christian Conservatives - as expressed by the staffs of the Weekly Standard, National Review, and Fox News (in New York!), among others - is a soirée in a samovar.

Outside of their gay and prosperous precincts, Americans are still wondering who the hell this woman is. The GOP is gravely misreading the national mood and the general appeal of their VP candidate. No one who wasn't already going to vote for her will now do so because she eats mooseburger and gives a snarky speech. Better enjoy that celebration because prognostications aside - she's the 2012 nominee (they assume either a loss or McCain's death, whichever comes first), she's the future of the party, she's come to save us from imminent defeat - Sarah Palin has a long, tough, and I'm guessing, scandal-filled road ahead of her.
