McCain Lawyers Push Back on Obama Keating Five Charges

Charles Keating
By Michael Abramowitz
PHOENIX -- The McCain campaign pushed back hard against the new Obama attack over the Keating Five, arguing that the Arizona senator was treated unfairly by the Senate ethics investigation and asserting that John McCain had been much more open about his relationship with disgraced thrift executive Charles Keating than Obama has been about his connection with one-time radical William Ayers.
In a conference call with reporters this afternoon, John Dowd, the Washington lawyer who represented McCain during the Senate investigation, called the inquiry a "classic political smear job" by the Democrats running the Senate at the time, saying that they only included McCain to make sure that a Republican was among the targets. "John had not done anything wrong," Dowd said.
Dowd's point of view was amplified by Robert Bennett, the Washington lawyer and Democrat who served as special counsel to the Senate Ethics Committee during the Keating Five investigation, which focused on whether McCain and other senators exercised improper political influence over the regulation of Keating's failed Lincoln Savings & Loan.
In an interview, Bennett said McCain should never have been dragged into the ethics case to begin with. He said that after his own lengthy investigation, he came to the conclusion that the case against McCain and former Sen. John Glenn (D-Ohio) "should have been dropped" because the evidence suggested that once McCain understood that the Justice Department was investigating Keating, he backed off any involvement. Dowd noted that McCain threw Keating, once a strong supporter, out of his office after Keating pressed him to intervene in his case.
Bennett said former Sen. Howell Hefflin (D-Ala.) insisted that the two be included in the formal public inquiry because otherwise there would have been a month of public hearings "with no Republicans in the dock." The other members of the Keating Five were Democrats.
"It was clear that McCain should not have been at the table nor should Glenn," Bennett said. "I felt it was unfair for McCain to be included as part of the Keating Five." Bennett stressed that he was not speaking as part of the campaign, though he noted he also represented McCain in his recent battles with the New York Times.
The sharp defense of McCain by Dowd was in contrast to McCain's previous contrition about his involvement in the matter. He told the New York Times in 1999 that going into the meetings with regulators was a mistake. "Going into that room gave a definite appearance of impropriety," he said.
McCain was ultimately exonerated by the Ethics Committee, which did fault him for exercising poor judgment in attending two meetings with federal regulators about their case against Keating, a once high-flying savings and loans owner who contributed $112,000 to McCain campaigns (as well as making gifts that were not found to be illegal). The collapse of Keating's thrift ultimately cost taxpayers billions, and Obama's campaign mounted a full-scale assault today on McCain's involvement, with an ad and short web documentary questioning his judgment.
In an e-mail to supporters, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe argued that the Keating Five affair highlighted McCain's support for a broad philosophy of deregulation that is eerily similiar to the crisis of today. "During the savings and loan crisis of the late '80s and early '90s, McCain's political favors and aggressive support for deregulation put him at the center of the fall of Lincoln Savings and Loan, one of the largest in the country. More than 23,000 investors lost their savings. Overall, the savings and loan crisis required the federal government to bail out the savings of hundreds of thousands of families and ultimately cost American taxpayers $124 billion," Plouffe wrote.
"In that crisis, John McCain and his political patron, Charles Keating, played central roles that ultimately landed Keating in jail for fraud and McCain in front of the Senate Ethics Committee. The McCain campaign has tried to avoid talking about the scandal, but with so many parallels to the current crisis, McCain's Keating history is relevant and voters deserve to know the facts -- and see for themselves the pattern of poor judgment by John McCain," Plouffe added.
Brian Rogers, a McCain spokesman, said McCain has been "open and honest" about his relationship with Keating, in contrast with Obama's statements about Ayers, one of the founders of the Weather Underground. "We're seeing the opposite from Barack Obama," he said.

I'm kinda glad to see things go "negative". McCain, by far has the most to hide, and loose by this tactic. So, bring it on. So, , Hussein Obama (come on, get real, anyone would have to be a moron to think Obama is going to turn terrorist and do evil things) was inspired by a anti-war dude. McCain could use a bit of anti-war himself. BFD. What I'm hoping will come out is what a mean hearted, short-man syndromed, kind of spoiled military brat, not to mention un-christian, womanizing, dark hearted, fairly un-intelligent, basically un-educated (except in the ways of war), old, hair-triggered, dishonest, sack of #### McCain really is (I'm sure his ex-wife would agree). Obama has had too much class not to go the swift boat route. But let's go there... McCain was a crappy, reckless, and entitled pilot, (that's how he got shot down... come on let's get his war service under the spotlight, he made Kerry look like patton) that went sissy the first chance he had in Nam. Facts will show, he is pretty much a jerk in any account of the word, and this campaign going dirty, will bring this out. So, bring it, wing nuts!

Why can't nobody trust John McCain.
1. Tax payers can't trust John McCain because he helped Charles Keating embezzle billions of dollars from the Lincoln Savings and Loan there by cleaning out the savings of nearly 20,000 elderly people.
2. The crooks whom McCain helps also do not trust him enough. When McCain heard that Keating had told one of his friends that McCain is a "wimp", McCain decided to squeal on Keating. McCain leaked confidential information about the congressioanal investigation on the failed Lincoln savings and loan to the press.

The only reason McCain was pulled in the keating 5 in the 1980's was because 4 democrats were involved and they wanted to make sure they had a republican involved to. Just like this financial crisis was caused by the democrats those dirtbags barney frank, nancy pelosi, maxine waters, chris dodd, charlie schumer, et al.

John McCain was instrumental in awarding a $35 Billion pentagon contract to a European firm EADS instead of the American firm Boeing. So much for McCain's "country first" campaign slogan. This was reported in Newsweek magazine, the one of many magazines Sarah Palin never reads. You can read all about it here.
http://www.newsweek.com/id/142658
When McCain wrote letters to the heads of the airforce and pentagon in response to lobbyists from the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Co. he did not put country first, he put his own greed first. Now the lobbyists who lobbied on behalf of EADS are all advisors in McCain's camp. What did it cost America. $35 Billion that could have created a half million jobs for American workers working on American soil, paying taxes to uncle sam. Now the hard earned tax dollars paid by American workers is going to a European company. The more I think about it, it makes me crinch that McCain has the audacity to run under the banner "Country first".

McCain was not exonerated. And his lawyers are incorrect in saying that they found that he "did nothing wrong."
John McCain was censured by the Senate Ethics Committee for poor judgement.
Webster's definitions below:
Exonerated - "To clear from accusation or blame; to relieve of a responsibility"
Censured - "An expression of strong disapproval or harsh criticism. An official rebuke, as by a legislature of one of its members"

Here's another article about the McCain Express.
http://www.nowpublic.com/world/mccains-express-neil-bush-jack-abramoff-keating-five-phil-gramm-enron
it turns out that the banks the Bush's and the McCain's had vested interest in by having their sons as directors where controlling the oil prices by trading on oil futures and artificially jacking up the prices. Not only do these crooks have family members installed in high positions in the banking industry, they have connections to Bahamas and other offshore islands where the money can be diverted away from the eyes of uncle Sam.
Now McCain says he spoke to Sarah Palin only once before selecting her as the veep. Sarah Palin was chairing the gas and oil commission before becoming governor. Whether McCain had direct dealings with Sarah Palin or his son Andrew McCain as director of a failed bank had dealings with Sarah Palin during her reign in the gas and oil commission is something that needs investigation. When you put the price of oil going up, the failed banks dealing in oil futures, and then all of a sudden the whole market collapses, and find the son of McCain involved in a failed bank, McCain's veep Sarah Palin's involvement in oil and gas price regulations, we have a skeleton forming that has corruption written all over it.

Finally nice to see some numbers moving in favor of Obama. Let's push hard and leave the scumbag Mccain camp far behind. It is always a fact, what goes around comes around and right now it is coming back at Mccain and hitting him hard...and it shows in polls falling like a rock or so I should say falling like the markets which Mccain/Bush help create.

McSame's life is looking more and more like a mirror image of the Bush's. Here are the reasons why.
1. Let us go back 20 years. Bush Sr. was the president at that time when the firt first Baking crisis happened and the government had to bail out some of the finncial institutions with tax payer money in the amount of $200 Billion. Neil Bush (the current president's brother) was a director of Silverado Bank which needed bailout in the amount of $4 Billion at that time. McCain was the mastermind of the Keating 5 ring that collapsed the Lincoln savings and loans.
2. Now 20 years later, Bush Sr's son Bush Jr is the president who is bailing out the wall streets and the banks in the amount of $700+ Billion. All thanks to the hard work of McCain doing his thing in the senate to deregulate the finance institutions. Now there is another player in the banking crisis. John McCain's son Andrew McCain is a director of Silver State Bankcorp ho suddenly resigned citing personal reasons. The stock price of Silver State Bankcorp has gone from $20 about a year ago to just pennies now.
Now the whole thing makes sense. The Bush's and the McCain's have always had a vested interest in the Finance and Banking industry. They had installed their respective sons as directors in banks which eventually failed. It is one of the reasons McCain is running scared trying to change the subject to something other than the finance trouble. Is it surprising that a few weeks ago McCain tried to hush the public and divert the attention by saying the "fundamentals of our economy are strong" when he knew from his own son that it ain't so.

This whole attempt to change the focus from the issues is crap, and will backfire on the McCain ticket. Palin has whacked a bee hive with a bat. Funny she accuses Obama of palling around with Ayers, which it is clear from all of the fact checking that he has not. HER OWN HUSBAND BELONGED TO AN ALASKA SEPARATIST MOVEMENT! TALK ABOUT SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T LOVE HIS COUNTRY. AND SHE ADDRESSED THE GROUP, FOR GOD'S SAKE, WELCOMING THEM THEIR MEETING. That is frightening. Then there's John McCain, who has sat on the board of an antisimetic group. And how about his association with Keating-don't believe it's all innocent, there is a lot about that that was never made public. They accuse Obama of not being forthcoming about his relationship with Ayers. GIVE ME A BREAK! His relationship with Ayers has been well documented, and proven to be minimal and meaningless. It's time Sarah and John were as honest with the public as Obama has been.

Way to give them some of their own medicine with commie accusational Grant_x... let's be honest though, the current lot of folks who support McCain and Palin (at least those posting here) are neither open-minded or sharp enough to catch the irony of your comment.
I will say however, that our military needs to do what their job description involves, whether you believe in their cause or not. The growing use of military members as attack dogs and fall-guys/pawns is irritating. I get the impression that many of those who are "liberal" and serve in the military (a large number based upon the number of donations to the Obama campaign) live in a politically oppressive environment where their political world-view is likely seen as "p*ssy" and they'll get the axe if they disagree with the current administration but those who are GOP-affiliated are allowed to grandstand.

Obama has an advatnage here because a reprimand from the ethics committee is more tangible than the vague guilt through association charges McCain is flinging about. The S&L scandal is also eerily similar to what is happening now. Interestingly, the "poor judgement" verdict against McCain fits nicely into the "he's erratic" narrative that has developed about McCain.

McCain-palin tactics against Obama-Biden
Bipartisanship and ? Maverick McCain.
Dear concerned citizens of America and Mass Media of the U.S.A.
As a concerned registered independent voter, forensic psychiatrist, disabled American I made my decision to vote after taking into consideration following joint tickets attributes and characteristics.
1. Has the ticket shown adequate calmness, coolness, and connectedness's under pressure to lead our nation [Presidential Temperament]?
2. Has the ticket shown sustained sound "Judgment and Caliber"?
3. Has the ticket shown adequate understanding of depth and degree to address the crucial challenges in their their purpose, policies, and positions [ Honesty, integrity and sincerity]?
4. Has the ticket sufficient "understanding and knowledge" of inside Washington workings [Experience]"?
5. Has the ticket reservoir resilience, wisdom, and vigor to address the present and future f our beloved "Great-grand Nation"?
6. Has the ticket enough joint foreign policy experience and exposure based on " Values, Virtues, Vastness, and " [American moral soul]"?
7. Has their campaign talk, slogans, ads, plans, and programs based on facts and are they free of fear, fiction, frivolous labels, unfair attacks, negativity, and impulsively? [No "imminent danger to national
security and safety"].
8. Has the ticket genuinely kept on message of country first and politics last and avoided copying [Message change"]?
9.Has the ticket message stayed away from Culture divide and war[ Disaster prevention ]?
10. Has the ticket resisted being surrounded, supported and surrogate's by divisiveness, distortion's, and destructive characters, [ Real patriotism VS shiftiness and shameless parrot-ism]?
11. Has the ticket thoughtful, real non-partisan, & non-impulsive plans to address our current economic crisis or political tactics and temperamental statements.
I have personally and professionally concluded that OBAMA-BIDEN ticket will lift and inspire our greatgrand nation back to its greatness within and restore our global standing with the use of maximum, firm
international diplomacy and minimal force if and when indicated {" Peace thru Strenght "}.
12. The era of responsibility has to replace irresponsibility and unaccountability will change to accountability and transparency. The Wall Street greed will change to Main Street need.
13. Temperamental and Angry McCain is out to play and create a card mistrust and distress around Obama with the Vail of claim that he will bring bipartisanship in Washington DC. He is destroying him claim every by painting Obama naive. It is tragic, sad, and unfortunate that so called Maverick McCain has already generated a disdain and demeaning face off in the debates and bailout suggestion. Obama is real Presidential and he maintained a smile during the debate and while McCain had a constant grin and disdain towards Obama.
Yours sincerely,
COL. A.M.Khajawall [Ret] MD.
Forensic psychiatrist, Disabled American Veteran and Iraq
Freedom team. Grass roots California leader per Senator McCain's
PS: It is sad and unfortunate that Hon, Temperamental and angry Maverick McCain has changed into bitter rather than better man.

Rear Admiral Tom Lynch Calls on Barack Obama to Disavow Accusation of American War Crimes in Afghanistan
HARRISBURG, PA — Rear Admiral Tom Lynch, USN (Ret.) today issued thefollowing statement on Barack Obama’s accusation of American war crimesin Afghanistan:
“Barack Obama must disavow his comments equating American forces in Afghanistan to war criminals. This dangerous rhetoric emboldens our enemy, but it also speaks to Barack Obama’s judgment and competency to serve as commander in chief. While his remarks were designed to score political points with the left wing of his party during the primary, Barack Obama stands by the comments even after securing the nomination. By defending his words,Barack Obama makes it more difficult for our American heroes in uniform to complete the job we have asked them to do.
Not good, not good at all.

Hilarious! Do you even read? You are wrong on the time period Obama was associated with these three people. You are also forgetting that McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, still is associated with Fannie Mae. Finally, do you think that Obama is really going to get Ayers to help him bomb something, that he will get Tom Rezco to help out with the mortgage crisis, or to have Rev. Sorry. You are so dumb I just couldn't resist.

The ruling from the senate ethics committee citing 'poor judgment' on McCain's part in the Keating 5 scandal pretty much says it all. Poor judgment in having an association with Charles Keating that wiped out the savings of 23000 investors in the Lincoln Savings and Loan. Poor judgment in saying we would be liberators if we invaded Iraq. Poor judgment is deregulating the banking industry which caused the sub-prime crisis, the current investment bank failures and the stock market crash.
Obama's 'so-called' associations with Ayers, Resko and Wright don't even come close to the kind of incompetence that John McCain has displayed in his political life. John McCain would be a disaster as president.

The Ayers Question [Yuval Levin]
Very soon after she was picked to be McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin was attacked by Obama campaign spokesmen and a Democratic member of Congress for once being seen wearing a Pat Buchanan button. She had an answer and the campaign offered it. Yet now we are asked to believe that it’s somehow inappropriate to inquire why Barack Obama’s political career began in the home of an admitted and unrepentant domestic terrorist of the radical left? “Who is Barack Obama?” is not an irrelevant question given the job Obama is seeking, and it’s a question he has sought mightily to avoid answering. The veil of secrecy he has thrown over his past (journalists have been denied access to his state legislative office records, documents about state earmarks he distributed in Illinois, a list of his legal clients, his state bar application, billing records related to Tony Rezko, medical records, academic records — all of which are the sort of documents candidates routinely make public) forces the question all the more.
The Obama campaign’s response to the question appears to be to raise John McCain’s connection to the Keating Five scandal. It is by no means out of bounds to raise the issue. McCain received campaign funds from Keating, his wife’s company had been involved in investment ventures with him, and he once met with federal regulators about Keating’s bank — though the Senate Ethics Committee found that unlike three other senators involved in the scandal, “Senator McCain’s actions were not improper.” The committee said only that he had exercised bad judgment by being involved with Keating at all and not seeing what others were doing. In fact, Bob Bennett, who was the Democratic lawyer selected by the committee to investigate the Keating Five, says in his book that he recommended that McCain’s name be dropped from the investigation because there was no evidence against him but, for political reasons (the other Senators were all Democrats), McCain’s name was left on the list.
McCain’s response to that scandal should certainly be compared with Obama’s Ayers explanations. McCain has spoken and written about every detail of the Keating mess, has expressed open contrition for allowing himself to be drawn into it even tangentially, and devoted years of his career to combating corruption as a result. He even badly overreacted and pushed for vastly excessive regulation of campaign financing. He has said (in a book in which he details his and others’ actions in the matter) that merely the appearance of impropriety involved makes his involvement with Keating “the worst mistake of my life.”
Had Obama done and said something similar regarding the sort of radicalism Ayers represents, he would now have an answer to offer. Instead, he has worked with Ayers, supported his causes, and denied any significance to the links between them. That, too, makes this a legitimate question about a man who would be president.

1. McSame wants to make the country as McDonald country. Export jobs to all over the world to satisify his wealthy cronies
2. Bulldog on lipstick is scary. She will make sure in this country no one votes for a woman anyone. No brains, just looks and no class - cheap shots. Uses personal email address for govt jobs. Uses govt workers to take care of her children.
3. How do you expect sarah palin to take care of the country, when she cannot teach her own daughter NOT to sleep around before marriage? If she is so busy to take care of her own house, how in the hell she will take care of our country.
4. Sarah u stupid b* people in glass houses should not throw stones. What the hell were u doing when ur daughter was sleeping around? U fit to speak in a church and be executive of Alaska the useless state no one cares about?

The Republicans (Reps) have ripped America to shreds. they have left us in HUGE Debt starting with Ronald Reagan. They have made our great country a COMMIE state. Putting American Citizens in Guanto bay on flimsy charges. Kidnapping Afghans from Afghanistan and moving to Guanta bay (its a country we DO NOT own). Spying on US Citizens phone, email and bank records IN SECRET. Last good rep was Abe Lincoln "Govt of the people, to the people, for the people". As if the bad guys will transmit information like dumb schmucks for all to get. They will use PGP and our government own TOR to bypass and use websites to hide information. The govt will use their Patriot act to spy on people who disagree with them (and democrats). When the RNC had their meeting, they put people in jail for protesting and the city of NY paid millions of dollars to settle. Why? run by Bloomberg, the billionaire who wants to RUN for the 3rd term (heck with term limits).
George bush / cheney will now want to run the country for the third term if geezer mcsame/bulldog on lipstick is on losing course.

You can read more about McCain's sons involvement in the financial crisis from

Here's another one for you:

I mean, have you and your family ever vacationed with another family? I have, and let me tell you we were friends and were close enough to handle vacationing together.

Wright be involved with political decision like the Republicans constantly involved Billy Graham and Jerry Falwell?
Sorry. You are so dumb I just couldn't resist.

I remember the Keating 5 scandal and I felt that John McCain and John Glenn were only let off the hook because they were both regarded as American hero's. And believe it or not from that point on I believe John McCain has always taken the American voter for being a fool. That' why he can stare into the camera and lie with a straight face and that why he he picked a unqualified Sarah Palin because he thinks he is smarter than the average citizen.I thought John McCain was a crook then and I feel the same way today. The excuse that he was representing his constituents was a joke. I never trusted John McCain after that scandal and he is not to be trusted now. He has never had good judgement!

OK. Go for it. You clearly sound educated. Please, let me know how communism begins.
Does it begin when the government creates a public education system, or when they scare the populace into giving them 700 billion?
Does it begin when the government starts paying for health care, or when they take away your rights with laws like the Patriot act.

While Rome burns, these clowns are playing dirty politics. Homes, jobs, investments, retirements etc. going down the tubes and this bimbo has the gall to stand up and spew venom. It's time that we the people took our country back from the few who have taken control. Question is, do we have the b...s. The founding fathers certainly gave us the power, but we're too dumb to use it. Party affiliation before country, that's what this is.

In the beginning I had patience with McCain supporters. I thought maybe they just didn't know any better.
So I would tell them as many facts about Obama that I could, all the hundreds of reasons why Obama was better.
But now, it is almost election time. Most people that were unsure, are going to vote Obama. Most Americans are going to vote Obama. Most people realize that Palin is not a leader, she is an actor with almost no intellegence.
Now I am annoyed. I am annoyed that there are still people out there that care more that Obama's pastor had some racist tendencies then if they will have a job next year. These people care more that Obama hung out with a English professor who lived in his neighborhood more then they care if they will have health insurance next year. THEY CARE MORE ABOUT RUMORS THEY READ ONLINE THEN ACTUALLY POLICIES THAT WILL EFFECT THEM.
I have no patience for these people. If you like McCain, but have nothing good to say about McCain, YOU ARE RUINING AMERICA.
You can do one of two things:
1) Argue why McCain's policies are better then Obama's policies.
2) Shut the F*ck up, vote for your idiot McCain, and live out your life.

And all of you socialism/communism fear-mongerers really just need to shut your mouths because you clearly are in over your heads. That blathering may have worked in the 1980's but it's pretty clear that your beloved free market needed an injection of "socialism" to keep the economy afloat. As a left-leaning centrist-independent, I'd much rather have seen the free market work itself out rather than pad the stats with close to a trillion dollars; that way we could have a clean case-study in whether or not it truly does work (I think it could have worked itself out with a bit of regulatory legislation to prevent the situation from happening again... a non-wild, domesticated "free"-market). An Obama presidency would HARDLY be even close to socialism much less full blown communism. Get your facts straight... in the internet age, you have no reason not to be ignorant.

There are a number of posts that look to be fake, pro36 and TL40. These are continually posting absurd smears over and over about Senator Obama. All of this stuff was well-vetted and thrown out over the primary by well-respected journalists, academics, government officials, and laymen witnesses. Come on, if you can't talk about your candidate's positions in a time of financial crises, you have a big problem. Well-informed, intelligent people won't follow this silly stuff.
Over the next three weeks this stuff will get worse and we will see the dark scaly underside of our nation. Some of these people are posting today, but many will come out in public and say things that will make the world wonder for our democracy and golden light to the world. Citizens need to call people out for this behavior.

TL40,
I am a White Male from a Rural town that has lots of guns and religion. I am a Desert Storm Veteran who believes in this country and is patriotic. I am also extremely well informed about politics and follow fact checking.
I don't fit into any one of your four categories and yet I still support Obama. Why? Because if you really look at how our country is going you will have to acknowledge that it isn't doing too well.
As a patriotic person I want better for my country and don't think or believe that John McCain can offer up any kind of real change.
The whole smear campaign against Obama was proven wrong in the Democratic Primary. It didn't work for Hillary, but McCain will stupidly try all the tricks that failed her.
He is running an abysmal campaign. Changing messages weekly and trying gimmicks instead of really offering up an agenda.
He deserves to lose.

Have you ever had a BUSINESS relationship with someone of questionable character? Perhaps you know, perhaps you don't know. The point is that who people were and who they are today is only partly relevant (i.e. Ayers). Personally, I think these "guilt-by-association" tactics are childish and imply that a sheepish mentality exists among the American electorate. The problem is that folks are just LOOKING for a reason to dislike Obama because he is not what we are used to (pick your reason why). Most clearly stated by Palin, she evoked this in her attack in Obama not seeing America the way "we" do; call it covertly racist or not, be my guest, but the bigger implication here is that if you subscribe to these type of attacks, you better watch your own back and who you associate with because it could come back and bite you in your behind.
Let's get back to the issues! And in other news, we just saw the market drop again today.

Mrs. Palin and Mr. McCain are losing the election and not just by a little. New polls are between 5-10% for voters and >60% for the electoral college. No wonder they are acting crazy, dishonorably, and resorting to silly smear lies. All of this stuff was vetted over the last year and now Mrs. Palin is bringing up trash and insinutating worse...race and terrorism. Come on, give us a break. If this is the best these guys can do, they do deserve to lose. This potty mouth talk is all about power and the Republicans don't want to give it up.
For people like me, it is the economy, stupid!
The stop market dropped 800 pts just now. My IRA has melted away and my business may be in threat. Mrs. Palin and Mr. McCain aren't leaders, they are pigs wallowing in the mud. Well, the mud is probably a good idea right now because it hides their poor Bush policies and lack of an economic plan for our country. However, it doesn't hide their small minds and morally challenged characters.

1) You are wealthy and powerful. You make alot of money each year, off the backs of the people you push around. You are probably a CEO, General Manager, or Owner of a corporation. You do not care what happens to America and the poor as long as you get your ends. You have voted before and you probably voted for Bush twice.
2) You hate Obama. You hate him becuase of the jealousy of his ivy league education, his skin color, his positive attitude, his wife, his outlook on life, or his taste in music. Whichever of these it is, it pisses you off alot. When you are sitting around watching Nascar or the NFL and drinking beer, you get annoyed at the political commercials. These commercials taught you everything you know about the campaign. You probably will not even vote.
3) You are a religious nutcase. You have crazy beliefs that force you to hate anyone who think differently then you. You will not be happy until everyone in this country looks, thinks, and acts like you do. McCain is not great, but at least he picked a wacko Vice President that agrees with what you like.
4) You are an idiot. One of the other three types of McCain supporters tricked you into beleiving McCain will help you somehow.

Boy, a lot of coolade drinkers like to post the same ol' brainwashed loonie left rantings that are fed them by the propaganda arm of the far left, AKA the media. Look the center of this meltdown is Fannie Mae. The same FM started by FDR. It was the darling of the Dems for bringing "Affordable housing" to the poor...translation home loans to people that can't pay them back. Really as simple as that. The republicans tried in vain to rein in, regulate or slow down the Fannie and were blocked at every attempt by Dems. And good ol' Barrak was in it to his neck even before he was elected to anything-as a Lawyer for ACORN! The same ACORN that pressured banks to make loans to poor people that couldn't afford them on the premise that to deny them would be a racist act. There you go...Bubba

Hey tbastian,
First off, I am an independent, I hold no allegiance to any political party or ideology. I vote based on the issues, and whats best for me, my family, my community and my country.
Now, having said that...
If "TrooperGate" is such a slam dunk, and the Pailin administration, (as well as her husband), have nothing to be ashamed of, or hide, why are they stone walling the very investigation that is supposed to find the truth and put the matter to rest?
As soon as she was selected as McCaint's running mate, the Bush/Rove political machine moved in, and her camp adopted the same tactics that have plagued this white house for the last 8 years. Secrecy, exercising powers that go beyond the Constitution, (as well as circumvent is very purpose,) and causing one court battle after another to buy time is no way to run an administration.
McCaint/Palin would just be another 4 years of Bush/Cheney, and this country could not survive that. We’ve had enough of secret administrations, phony wars, violation of basic civil rights, and just plain poor performance by our elected officials.
It’s time for change. If not now, then when? If not Obama, then who?

If you actually like Obama, you are one of four types of people, and think that caps lock is a good substitute for sound reasoning; and you wouldn't know what truth was if it went up your rectal orifice.
1) You are wealthy and powerful. (like Soros, Buffett, Bill Gates, any DNC politician, Hollywood stars, etc) You make alot of money each year (the typical SF Bay Area liberal has many times more financial assets than Palin), off the backs of the people you push around. You are probably a CEO, General Manager, or Owner of a corporation. You do not care what happens to America and the poor as long as you get your ends. You have voted before and you probably voted for Bush twice. (Anybody could have beaten Bush, except that the DNC didn't have anybody and by supporting the DNC twice, you put Bush into the Presidency.)
2) You love Obama. You love him becuase of the jealousy of his ivy league education (just like Prez Bush), his skin color (via Jim Crowe definitions), his positive attitude, his wife, his outlook on life, or his taste in music. Whichever of these it is, it pisses you off alot. (and we know what libs like Monica like sucking) When you are sitting around watching Nascar or the NFL and drinking beer, you get annoyed at the political commercials. These commercials taught you everything you know about the campaign. You probably will not even vote.
3) You are a religious nutcase. You have crazy beliefs that force you to hate anyone who think differently then you. You will not be happy until everyone in this country looks, thinks, and acts like you do. McCain is not great, and he picked a wacko Vice President that is against sacrificing babies to the liberal gods of disgusting wealth.
4) You are an idiot. One of the other three types of Obama supporters tricked you into beleiving Obama will help you somehow. You are too stupid to realize that Obama is a Marxist and you are an idiotic puppet.

Forget the Keating Five.
Just focus on this: On August 29 of this year--just over a month ago--McCain put on his ticket a self-professed "Joe Sixpack hockey mom" who has no clue about foreign policy ("I can see Russia from my state), who doesn't understand the powers of the VP (her confusing answer in the debate), who doesn't understand the economic crisis we're in (her rambling answer to Katie Couric's question about the bail out discussed and health care), who has no interest in other countries (no passport until 2007), who can't name a newspaper she reads (Katie Couric interview)--do I need to go on?
Isn't that indictment enough of "The Maverick?"
Isn't that enough for you?

This is called just desserts. McCain unleashes the vile bittch Palin to smear Obama. Obama points to FACTS which infer that McCain has a long history of protecting business from regulation and helping rich friends avoid the law. McCain cries foul. Typical Republican playbook. Ready. FIRE. (Oh shiit, we forgot to aim). Let's just claim that Obama is smearing US! Yeah. Same with dumb biitch Palin criticizing Obama's past with a smile on her face, then saying, all you democrats want to do is point the finger and look backwards. The country is onto her. She's a nasty trailer-trash biitch. She's going down with McCain and his sinking ship, which is more life a liferaft from Cuba to Florida, with a million holes. He's patching, she's bailing. No one is steering. They will sink before they reach Florida. Thankfully. With any luck, McCain will move to an old folks home, and Palin will go moose hunting with Cheney and he'll have better aim this time.

They're all politicians of a similar stripe.
Bottom line though is Obama is more like Bush than anyone else here. Obama rode oil money and cocaine, via Ivy League tuition paid by Arab sheiks. Same old, same old. You can't trust a politician or the media to tell you the truth.

Of course McCain wants to bury what happened with the Keating Bank fraud scandal: He hopes that people who are old enough won't remember and people who are too young to have heard about it won't find out.
Since Shoot-em-up Sarah cannot speak articulately or knowledgeably about the economy or foreign relations all she is capable of doing is getting out there and trying to spread rumors - acting like an attack dog is something she knows how to do well. The good news: She isn't allowed to use her rifle while she campaigns in the lower 48. The bad news: The woman is ignorant and deluded - she thinks she is capable of running our country.
Not this woman, not this country.

Keating Five is what McCain gets for reaching across the aisle. Remember that the other four were/are Democrats and didn't get off anywhere nearly as easy, except for John Glenn. Look what happens when President Bush reaches across the aisle. We get Mineta in the transportation department and Paulsson in the treasury department. See a pattern. Work with Democrats and you get crap.

How about McCain's ties to Russian and Italian mafia. McCain was directly involved in helping Putin buy and control the little country in Mediterannian, Montenegro. What is McCain doing on a boat with Raffaello Follieri who is in jail right now for money laundering?

Patrick10 - you Republicans really need to get educated. When you read the comments of the Republicans in every blog room, you read the comments of emotional, uneducated people. You people sound like 10 year olds in a playground. No one cares about Ayers NO ONE! We care about our wallets. McCain is unfit to talk about character. He is a thief and a liar. He is not credible. He is a desperate little man who thinks he can beat on his chest and we will make him President.
HE WILL NOT WIN THIS ELECTION. NOW GET OVER IT AND QUIT WHINNING! GEESH

Sometimes in politics, memories fail.
In a conference call with reporters, attorney John Dowd was asked about a specific part of the Keating Five inquiry, the fact that Cindy McCain and her father had invested in a Keating strip mall.
"It was part of the inquiry, but it did not -- John was unconnected to that and unaware of it at the time, and did not participate in it," Dowd said.
But thanks to the quick research skills of Democratic partisans, here's John McCain's answer to an attorney who asked him about that very investment during the ethics committee hearings in 1991.
"Sometime in 1986, I was told by Mr. Delgado, who was Executive Vice President of my father-in-law's company, that they were going to invest in a shopping center and that the investment -- the project -- was being put together by a subsidiary of American Continental," McCain said. "He later told me that they -- that that had happened. And I had no interest in it and just noted in passing that this investment took place."
The attorney asking the question during the hearing? John Dowd.

Hey mcCain - the DOW dropped 800 points today. McCain's own campaign was stupid enough to say "If this is about the economy we lose". What dumb people. They think they can turn the page on an 800 point drop in the DOW. They are trying their hand at swiftboating once again. It won't work for the old man and the dummy. She can't string together 2 coherent sentences but she talks all the time.

McCain waits all these years to "suddenly" tell this phoney story ? Did he have a Mental Pause in his thinking ? Plain facts are, McCain, Neil Bush & John Keating looted Silver Auto Savings & Loan at the tax payers expense. Keating is the only one of the 3 to be punished. McCain is a thief & Liar.

You know it's possible that after Obama gains the White House, he will invite Ayers in just to blow up the place. After all that is what Ayers would love to do after all these years.
I think there is a consiracy on going here we don't know about.
What about it you second gun man conspiracy freaks? Do you suppose? Does this tickle your paranoid little fantasy's?
Maybe McCain/Palin can save us from all this?

You know the Unibomber was a professor but I guess he is the exception not the rule.
The very fact that you Parrot the old "university's are liberal" shows to me that your education was probably wasted in the bottom of a bottle. lol nice try though. i mean you didn;t even mention your degrees or university...did you have to look one up real quick? lol

Hmmm...let's see, one is an actual sitatuion that took place - the keating incident. The second - the Ayers fantasy - is just that, it's a fantasy. There's nothing there so there's nothing to explain.
McCain has lost all credibility. Welcome to the kitchen sink portion of this election process. The mccain camp using Ayers and Wright is just an old tired tactic. Maybe he could call hillary and the other dems and see how well this tactic and sources worked for them. (Here's a hint, it didn't!)

This Keating 5 thing is in response to the latest line of attack by Sarah Palin. Unfortunately, (this is a word I have been using alot lately to describe this election) the character attacks prove that McCain is desperate to distract from the main issue facing Americans today...THE ECONOMY!
The fact that Palin is even bringing up events that transpired when Obama was 8 years old is proof in and of itself that the republican ticket is "out of touch".
Not only are these smears untrue, polarizing and classless. They are reckless and bordering on criminal. Associating Obama and his supporters with terrorists places people in danger as the emotions will run high towards election time. This type of talk brings out the worst in our society and dehumanizes people who simply may not agree with you politically. IT IS WRONG! We should be able to participate in our system without our patriotism being questioned.
BACK TO THE REAL ISSUES PLEASE!

The political bickering is planned to distract from our thinking about capability to analyze and communicate, to have this capability to analyze and communicate result in good judgment in choosing advisors and in coordinating the best ideas for America, not just the simplistic ideas. The simplistic distractions are planned to keep voters from thinking about how much poor judgment (Like Keating Five and the last eight years of agreeing with the administration on war and deregulation) costs Americans in resources and in life and limb.
The special interests and lobby group want to buy government decisions on the cheap and take advantage of Americans without having to deal with the complex results that might cripple our nation. They get people from the top of their class to represent them and manipulate to take advantage. We are too lax about the possibility that we might be represented by those from the bottom of their class and that we might be making it easy for the special interest lobby group to take advantage of us. Again!!!
Having effective and timely studies by our government led by those from the top of their class has been lacking at great cost to us all. We have lost planes due to neglect in the timely study of flight manuals. We have lost lives and livelihood due to neglect in the timely study of intelligence information. We have lost a solid economy due to neglect in the timely study of needed regulations and deregulations. We have lost our standing in the world due to neglect in the timely study of diplomacy and when and how to successfully use it.
It is time to replace the simplistic attitudes and ideas useful in manipulation with a stronger understanding of ideas useful in doing the strong work needed to get us back on track. This needs to be led by a dedicated president from the top of his class, rather than by the special interest lobby group who are carefully selected and paid to take advantage of America.
Again!!! Let's be careful in rebuilding our countries capabilities.

Bill Ayers and Barack Obama have been linked during their time in the city of Chicago, where they lived three blocks apart and led charges for education reform in the state of Illinois. The two met "at a luncheon meeting about school reform in a Chicago skyscraper."[39] Obama was then named to the Chicago Annenberg Project board to oversee the distribution of grants in Chicago. Later in 1995, Ayers hosted "a coffee" for "Mr. Obama's first run for office."[40] Both Obama and Ayers were members of the board of an anti-poverty group, the Woods Fund of Chicago, between 2000 and 2002, during which time the board met twelve times.[40] Ayers also contributed $200 to Obama's re-election fund to the Illinois State Senate in April 2001."[39] Since 2002, there has been little linking Obama and Ayers.[40] Obama says he has not visited Ayers during the presidential campaign. The senator said in September 2008 that he hadn't "seen him in a year-and-a-half."[41] In February 2008, Obama spokesman Bill Burton released a statement from the senator about the relationship between the two: "Senator Obama strongly condemns the violent actions of the Weathermen group, as he does all acts of violence. But he was an eight-year-old child when Ayers and the Weathermen were active, and any attempt to connect Obama with events of almost forty years ago is ridiculous."[39] CNN's review of project records found nothing to suggest anything inappropriate in the volunteer projects in which the two men were involved.[42] Internal reviews by The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time magazine, The Chicago Sun-Times, The New Yorker and The New Republic "have said that their reporting doesn't support the idea that Obama and Ayers had a close relationship."[43]

Being tortured by your enemies and brutalized until near death and finally after years and years of non stop abuse you break he's a song-bird? I bet, if you asked Mr. Elliot if John McCain's relationship with Charles Keating was irrelevant to the savings and loan scandal, he would tell you that it is definitely relevant.
Mr. Elliot would probably tell you so, because John McCain did not do anything to stop Charles Keating. In fact, he did everything in his power to help Charles Keating continue stealing money from the ELDERLY, which John McCain benefitted from professionally and personally.
Unfortunately, Mr. Elliot, who was one of Charles Keating's elderly victims will not be able to answer the question today, because he committed suicide in 1990 "because he was distraught over losing $200,000 -- his life savings." - Jeffrey Gettleman Los Angeles Reporter

You idiots who keep insisting we don't know the real Obama based on his dealings with Ayers really crack me up.
If you can't tell what kind of a man Obama is after watching hours of his interactions with all sorts of people and his family over the last few months then don't have a clue.
And the reason you don't have a clue, or ever will have a clue is you are inherently stupid.
Your closed warped little minds try so hard to believe something that really isn't there, no matter how hard you want to believe in it. Thse fears have little to do with what these elections are about.
If you don't know the real Obama it has nothing to do with Obama. It has everything to do with your failure to comprehend obvious reality that has beating you in the head for at least 6 months.
It's amusing watching Palin trying to nurture your stupidity with her idiotic ramblings. What a hilarious symbiotic relationship you fools have with her.
I love Palin. She is like a lightening rod attracting all sorts of contempt. But best of all she has renewed Tina Fey's career on SNL. Tina does a better palin than Palin does.
And doggone it I love it I tell ya'!

Obama is not forthright, nor is McCain, nor is Biden, and Palin is least of all.
I will vote for the candidate with the economic plan that will better address the deep, painful recession we face -- Obama.
A poll of professioal economists by The Ecoomist magazine found that 71% of experts say Obama has the better plan. Interestingly, of the economists who identified themselves as Republicans, Obama's plan was voted better than McCain's by 46-23. Given the current economic climate, Obama's economic plan is better than McCain's, no matter what the neocons and others interested in gaining power say.

Ayers is a college professor because he is a leftist radical. That is what MOST professors are. I don't know if you ever stepped on a college campus. It is FULL of left winged socialists who feel they are superior to everyone else and are more intelligent than the rest of common man. Their goal is to indoctrinate young minds with their agenda.
He was NOT convited because his statements occurred due to illegal wire tapping. No wonder Obama is SO against defending this country by wiretapping terrorists.
He should be in prison

What a joke...mccain stated this morning that obama thought he was above the law and above having his record question........while mccain's camp hides palin behind the RNC lawyers for troopergate. McCain is such a disgrace I can hardly speak his name -- I'm starting to think that he is no Bush, but by his campaign actions a hundred times worse than Bush.
Posted by: steveeyes | October 6, 2008 3:23 PM
When the gloves come off, Sarah, not only will the Keating Five become part of the discussion, but so will collaboration with the enemy by the Songbird. We can start with the word "treason" for the collaboration with the North Vietnamese and let McCain's lawyers add the finer points, like torture. There is always the use of the powers of the Alaska Governor to punish a brother-in-law to be discussed when the issues no longer interest us. Yeah. Drop the gloves, girl. Just don't run off and hide like a coward -- a coward in lipstick.

========================================
Fair and Balanced - just what I expect from a liberal troll....
I noticed you failed to post this portion of the article so I will do it for you.
"Dowd's point of view was amplified by Robert Bennett, the Washington lawyer and Democrat who served as special counsel to the Senate Ethics Committee during the Keating Five investigation, which focused on whether McCain and other senators exercised improper political influence over the regulation of Keating's failed Lincoln Savings & Loan.
Now Bennett is an attorney as well. He just happens to be the one who prosecuted McCain durng the investigation.

It's simple. Barack Obama - show us your Columbia school records, your senior thesis, the way you made Harvard Law Review president. What are you hiding? The information is missing!
Barack Obama- why did the library of the Woods Foundation say that the owner of the papers (Ayers) relevant to Obama had blocked their release? Why was there a delay between asking and getting info?
Barack Obama- why is your medical report a paragraph long? Where is the info on your smoking? Drinking? Cocaine use?
Barack Obama- why do you claim that you were in a church for 20 years and didn't really know what was going on there? Does this mean you're not truly a Christian, or just not religious?
Barack Obama- why did you say that "we don't know" what would've happened if we would have followed your plan instead of the surge? Why don't you know? Did you not have goals? or faith? How can you not have an idea of your own plan?

Common Folks! if Ayer was a terrorist someone or dangerous! how comes he is a professor? is the Government not a fraid of him poisoning young minds?. Tell Mcain and his goons to get over it!! gutter politics has no place in the 21st century!
In recent weeks, John McCain and the Republican Party have blatantly and without any shame adopted the Democratic campaign theme of “change”. It should be evident to an objective observer that Bush 43 and now McCain and Pailin are mere puppets to the true Republican national party leaders who control their strings. Cheney is one of the few of that inner cabal that have been calling the shots since the Nixon administration. They are in fact a continuation of the Nixon and Ford presidencies with only a disruption during the Carter and Clinton years. Bush 41( Head of the RNC during Nixon, former head of the CIA,VP to Reagan, and president is probably the real leader of this political Cosa Nostra if not a equal partner of this power sharing musical chairs game. His right and left hands have been Dick Cheney(former Sec.of Defense of Bush 41, former White House Chief of staff for Ford) and the other is Donald Rumsfeld(former Sec. of Defense for Ford and Bush 43,former special envoy to the Middle East during Reagan). Another member of this group, more likely a captain if not a full blown boss himself is James Baker (former C.O.S of Reagan, former Under Sec. of Commerce for Ford, former C.O.S and Sec of State for Bush 41, former Sec. of Treasury for Reagan, former chief legal advisor to Bush 43). Another captain or free lance enforcer is Karl Rove a college drop out and campaign manager for both Bush 41 and 43, also for Phil Gram who is McCain’s economic advisor.
Lets look at McCain’s staff of change.
On July 2, 2008, Steve Schmidt was given "full operational control" of McCain's campaign. Steve Schmidt prior to this was a top aide to Dick Cheney and a protégé to Karl Rove. Another advisor is Charles R. Black worked for Ronald Reagan's two Presidential campaigns in 1976 and 1980 and he was a senior political adviser to the 1992 re-election campaign of George H.W. Bush. Another advisor is Randy Scheunemann. He was project director for the Project for the New American Century. A neo-conservative think tank founded by non other than Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Bill Kristol and others in 1996. Other signatories to this group reads like a who’s who of the last 8 years of the republican administration.
These people have never cared about small town america or “values” All they care about is war profiteering. Many of the signatories have never served in the military. Cheney and Rove both dodged the draft. Look at the statement of principles by the PNAC. Rumsfeld was a good friend of Saddam Huessin in the 80’s Cheney didn’t want Nelson Mandela free. These are the real puppet masters, they throw out the talking points about the left of being elitist and not caring about middle america and these same guys other than Rove have advanced degrees and are worth no less than 10 million dollars. People who support them need to extricate their heads out of Limbaugh and Hannity’s asses and see what is really happening to them. McCain is not his own man he confuses stories of his real life with a book he read “The Gulag Archipelago", in which a fellow prisoner - not a guard - silently drew a cross in the dirt with a stick.” An ironic twist to all this is Eliot A. Cohen, a signatory to the PNAC "Statement of Principles", responded in The Washington Post: "There is no evidence that generals as a class make wiser national security policymakers than civilians. George C. Marshall, our greatest soldier statesman after George Washington, opposed shipping arms to Britain in 1940. His boss, Franklin D. Roosevelt, with nary a day in uniform, thought otherwise. Whose judgment looks better?"
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/uselection2008/johnmccain/2581086/John-McCain-accused-of-plagiarising-Wikipedia-for-speeches.html. Even if you don’t like Obama there is no-way a sane person can want this continued blatant fleecing of our Nation.
Thes are all verifiable facts and can be found just with a google search. AIPAC and PNAC are the military industrial complex.
Other than the ultra affluent, how can anyone support the Republican Party? When will small town America realize that they are being duped into supporting the ultra-affluent agenda? The talking points of the right are so hypocritical that it becomes laughable. The red meat of the right is the so called Main stream Media as if Limbaugh, Hannity, et al. are not part of it. They demean celebrity status, however they tout one of their greatest presidents(Reagan) was an actor. They say they are the party of patriotism, yet many of the upper echelon of the party have never served, i.e. Cheney, Rumsfeld, Baker, and Reagan. They say that they care about "Main Street" USA but only bail out the Whales of Wall Street. Yet small town America eats this tripe every year. They don't care about religion unless it can be used to stir up the base, nor science or technology unless there is a buck to be made. Small town America takes pride on its freedom but yet don't realize that over time we are becoming less free, ie wire tapping and other forms of domestic surveillance. They demean people of intelligence because they know many people of small town America don't have degrees and use it at a fake issue and call people who spent time in academia as elitist when many on the right serve on university boards and have part-time professorships. They say they are against affirmitive action but yet celebrate mediocrity, Bush43 and McCain graduating at the bottom of their classes. Who both came from already well established families and had all the opportunities and connections to excel. Why does small town America believes this is the party for them? Christian conservatives seem to the be the first ones who want to go to war and bomb someone before any diplomacy is tried. Why can't small town America and Christian conservatives realize they are being used as pawns just as much the Islamic fundamentalist are. Islamic fundamentalist come from small town Middle East and given the same kind of talking points as the evangelicals. They want prayer in school, no choice available to women, and believe to the core that their ideas about worship and country are the best. Wake up small town America you are being duped.Talking about who is more patriotic, symbols, lipstick and wearing pins are nothing more than distractions to the real issue of how a few select group of people have held power almost continuously for over 30 years. Yes the left has their own political power groups but none have been so effective at pushing forward an agenda that is fundamentally bad for the U.S. and in a larger view the entire world. I stress again the now defunct PNAC and the AIPAC have been slowly pushing us closer to another World War. Bush41 and et al have been doing this and no one calls them on it. Every Republican administration has basically the same people recycled since Nixon. Just do a little research and you will see that these people are just pushing this agenda of some kind of Pax Americana and not taking into account that maybe other nations of the world might not like that and if not bomb them. Many people who support the Republican party, really need to read "1984" by George Orwell and see how we as nation have been inching closer to that type of society. People think this story is about a communist society, but it is more about how a society is kept in a constant state of fear in order for the ruling class to stay in control. Doublespeak, patriotism to the point of frenzy, censorship, erosion of civil liberties (not respecting the Constitution) is happening right in front of us. The consolidation of government (the executive branch has never been more powerful than ever, gridlocked legislature with only two parties for representation, a judiciary that just kowtows to the executive branch). No real independent journalism. Cameras placed on every street corner. This may sound like delusional conspiracy stuff, but I implore people to research for themselves to really see what is happening to them. People think this could never happen here in the U.S. but all this has already happening, slowly, incrementally all under the guise of "keeping America safe"

McCain's campaign sure can dish out those lies, can't they? Perhaps they should all grow a pair (or borrow Sarah's) when it comes to taking it. I'm dee9 and I approve this message.

Dear jgipson1 ,
You are correct in saying that Ayers did this when Obama was only 8. What you aren't saying is that Obama started hispolitical career with a fundraiser at the Ayers house, sat on a board with him for a number of years and worked with him on an education study ( aimed at not imporving scores but on socialist agenda items )
What you are missing is that Ayers is a terrorist. Obama did work with him and knew him. He stated they were friendly.
I don't know about you but, I am not freindly with terrorists and wouldn't be under any circumstances. Especially one from my own country that hates it so.

Lilycat - McCain didn't do anything wrong?
McCain's own words, from his biography:
"I made the worst mistake of my life by attending two meetings, the first with the chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the government agency charged with regulating the practices of the nation’s savings and loans, and a week later with four bank examiners based in San Francisco who were at that time investigating the investment and lending practices of Lincoln Savings and Loan of Irvine, California, owned by my good friend and generous supporter Charles Keating."
Notice what else he says? Good friend, not "social friend," but good friend.
Posted by: wtm1 | October 6, 2008 3:16 PM
The truth is, John McCain has never fully addressed the issue of his close friendship with the banker, Charles Keating. McCain accepted money, favors and free trips from Keating, who eventually went to prison for swindling investors and depositors in Lincoln Savings & Loan, his bank which had to be bailed out by American taxpayers.
http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-brooks25-2008sep25,0,5467109.column?track=ntothtml
In return for this money and these personal luxuries, McCain worked hard against any laws to tighten regulation of S&Ls, and when he learned that Keating’s Lincoln Savings & Loan was the target of a federal investigation, he met with regulators in an effort to get them to back off.
http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/1989-11-29/news/mccain-the-most-reprehensible-of-the-keating-five/1
McCain escaped prosecution for his actions, but he has continued over the years to do favors for other financial special interests in return for their support. Lobbyists for the financial industry are playing a major role in his current campaign.
http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/75536
Can John McCain be trusted given his long record of accepting thousands of dollars from the financial industry to do their bidding in Washington?
Posted by: snesich | October 6, 2008 3:16 PM
Seems to me that their are a bunch of unproven accusations here. The facts are that MCCain was "faulted for exercising poor judgment" and made the statements about It being his worst mistake. Almost everything else is just words. That goes for both the article and a lot of the comments.
Palin continues to do damage to her party.
Posted by: KD11 | October 6, 2008 3:14 PM
The Keating Five business was widely publicized both during and after the event, and judgements were rendered. There is no equivalency between McCain's involvement at the time and Obama's chosen lifelong association with urban terrorists, left-wing radicals, racists, American-hating preachers, Chicago political hacks and criminals. Obama has been given a pass on this matter for too long. Both campaigns and the media have a responsibility to completely expose this aspect of Obama's life, including its influence upon his character and ideology.

Why is it a smear job when Obama says anything but not when McCain does?
I don't care anything about Obama's background...the way I figure it the Republicans have damaged the economic and moral structure of our society. They've nuked us with the credit & housing crisis, refused to move on health insurance, and spend billions on foreign aid & military invasions.
The Republican party serves its own at our expense. Take away their hold on government & their personal bank accounts will disappear. How many homes does McCain own...I think 7?
I'm backing the black dude.

You might want to at least read the above article or you might want to change you name to "uninformed latin voter".
The article (specifically, the attorney who prosecuted on behalf of the committee), clearly says McCain was drug in primarily because he was a Republican and the ethcis committee was made up of Democrats.
Compare that to Obama who has lied about his relationship with Ayers AND Wright, And Rezko, AND Phleuger, AND ON, AND ON, AND ON,.........

100% hypocrisy. From a politician's lawyer?!? I'm shocked!
Please get on track and tell us what you intend to do as president, Sen. McCain. We do care about that; we don't care about your smear campaigns or anyone else's.
Posted by: schmert | October 6, 2008 3:09 PM
Wow
And this pales in comparison where Obama was flatly the highest paid off Senator by Fannie Mae.
That and the democrats purposely made loans available to underprivileged people, bad loans. They didnt care that nothing could be paid back, so long as they got votes.
The keating scandal pales in comparison the Fanie Mae and Obama scandal! ( even forgetting the Ayer's scandal)
Posted by: jabberwolff | October 6, 2008 3:08 PM
McCain did not rat on Keating, or Keating, who was very powerful, would have taken McCain down with him. By the way, the government still hasn't squeezed out all the money Keating still owes.
Bill Ayers. Not just a radical. A bomber. A bank robber. A murderer. Was not prosecuted properly so walked on a technicality. Bill Clinton pardoned him.
Barack Obama. Met Bill Ayers in New York, came together in Chicago, worked on community organizing goals with Saul Alinsky material, developed educational indoctrination policies for Ayers, worked together in various places, met at parties, sat on the same boards, live in the same neighborhood.
Connected.

McCain what a whinner, he can slam Obama and tell lies about something that happened 40 years ago when Obama was 8 years old and it's ok for him to lie, this actually happened and McCain was implicated in the Keating 5 affair.
This couldn't have come at a better time
for Obama wthe the stock market taking a dive and the debate tomorrow. Like they say karma sucks!!! what goes around comes around and McCains is getting his. Obama/Biden 08

Obama's early relationships shaped his political beliefs. Ayers is a known convicted terrorist.
Why was Obama associating with him?
What is Obama's real agenda?
Who is the real Obama?
How old was when he was finally baptized a Christian? And what was he before that?
There are REAL doubts about the character of this man.

Lilycat1 - absolutely. The problem is not McCain, the problem is that people don't do investigation for themselves and so are caught in their own enthusiasm for Obama without checking the facts. It's an easy factcheck for Keating 5.
Posted by: gengar843 | October 6, 2008 3:03 PM
John McCain was for saving criminal Keating before he realized it would kill his political career. Then McCain turned on Keating. FLIP...FLOP.
As to those who think this criminal behavior somehow opens Obama up to criticism on the Wright nonsense, then we'll just have to go after McCain and Palin for their highly-questionable affiliations with witch doctors, end-of-days radical freaks, and anti-American "spiritual" advisors. If y'all want to go there, then we'll go there. And McCain/Palin will suffer mightily for it.
Posted by: Russell4America | October 6, 2008 3:03 PM
McCain showed poor judgement if nothing else in meeting with federal regulators twice in an effort to affect their concerns about Charles Keating. It was just wrong. Certainly an arrogant misuse of power as a senator. Regardless of the fact that Cindy McCain and her father invested money in Keatings interests.
His hands have kaka on them and it scared him a bit. Why he insists on dredging up Ayers and thus accusations about Keating is a mystery in light of the incredible economic chaos we are reeling from.
The stock market drop today would suggest American has greater problems than anything McCain and Palin are baiting Obama to engage in.
So who do you want to help lead us through the minefield?

Is that why patriotic Palin's husbhand is part or was part of group that wanted Alaskan Independence. Palin's husbhand is a traitorous secessionist who doesn't even want to be part of America. Who is she to question anyone's patriotism.
Mccain and Palin better watch themselves in this guilty by association game. Especially, since a video on youtube shows Palin getting blessed against witchcraft by an anti-semitic voodoo doctor, and Mccain's long laundry list of shady pastors and business associates.
Ill see your Illnois professor, once sixites militant, and Ill raise you traitorous husbhand (todd Palin), an anti-catholic firebrand (Hagee), an anti-semitic witchdoctor, and a pastor who thinks America's mission is to destroy islam (Rod Parsley)
And by the way if facts matter, Obama has very little association with Ayres or Franklin Raines. Being on the board of an Annenberg charity together doesn't make you Pals.
Posted by: socalcrimatt | October 6, 2008 3:01 PM
Speaking of bailouts, Obama voted FOR it.
This means he does not really believe in "bottom-up" economics, since there is not help for foreclosures or homeowners in it.
Also, it puts $350-700 billion in the hands of a Goldman Sachs fat cat (Paulson) to help his buddies.
Also, it's essentially a Bush proposal that Obama voted YES.
Posted by: gengar843 | October 6, 2008 3:01 PM
It has long been said that McCain did nothing wrong in the Keating affair, but the opposition can't have it otherwise. They'll beat this dead horse to death and the poor fools who follow Obama will believe it because they want and need to.
Posted by: Lilycat1 | October 6, 2008 3:00 PM
So the McCain team wants another "pass" because John's claiming that he was treated badly? OK, what about McCain's team giving one to Obama under the same terms?
Posted by: chirp | October 6, 2008 2:59 PM
Dowd can spin for McCain it anyway he wants. The truth is Keating was one on McCain's biggest financial backers. McCain not only took his money, he tried to help Keating avoid having his Savings & Loan investigated. Keating's Savings & Loan failed, sticking the taxpayers with a huge bill and wiping out thousand and thousands of senior citizen's life savings on uninsured investiments that Keating misrepresented.
Posted by: dcwsano | October 6, 2008 2:58 PM

As usual, the Democrats are AWFUL at smear campaigns. Picking on Keating 5? Retarded! We know the whole story, and anyone with a Google can factcheck the whole thing.
About Obama, my issue is not with Obama's associations as much as it is with his philosophy. If he thinks like Ayers, Wright, the PLO, or anyone else with which he's being linked, that's big trouble in my mind.

"In a conference call with reporters, attorney John Dowd was asked about a specific part of the Keating Five inquiry, the fact that Cindy McCain's father had invested in a Keating strip mall.
John Dowd."

It's about time that someone ANYONE had the "Guts" to bring OBAMA'S "radical" relationships to the American People!!! Why have we waited so long? Obama's character and judgement have EVERYTHING to do with this Presidential race and election. I can't believe that we would actually consider putting someone in the White House who has ties to these types of "Radicals" including Reverand Wright!
WAKE UP PEOPLE! This man IS NOT who he claims to be and I pray that someone makes him address the facts and this issue in particular in front of a huge American audience soon!

Wait, didn't McCain build his entire career as a "maverick" based on admitted contrition over his wrongdoing with Keating? Didn't he call it the "worst mistake of his life?"
So.... the question is, if he's now saying it was all just a smear job and he did nothing wrong... doesn't that kind of throw the entire "maverick" thing out the window, once and for all.
I think Dowd's getting it right here: he was never sorry for it. And anyone who believed he was got duped.

McCain is the world's biggest hypocrit. His associations would never pass the smell test. Look at his relationship with Gordon Liddy.
Liddy served four and a half years in prison in connection with his conviction for his role in the Watergate break-in and the break-in at the office of the psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg, the military analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers. Liddy has acknowledged preparing to kill someone during the Ellsberg break-in "if necessary"; plotting to murder journalist Jack Anderson; plotting with a "gangland figure" to murder Howard Hunt to stop him from cooperating with investigators; plotting to firebomb the Brookings Institution; and plotting to kidnap "leftist guerillas" at the 1972 Republican National Convention -- a plan he outlined to the Nixon administration using terminology borrowed from the Nazis. (The murder, firebombing, and kidnapping plots were never carried out; the break-ins were.) During the 1990s, Liddy reportedly instructed his radio audience on multiple occasions on how to shoot Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents and also reportedly said he had named his shooting targets after Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Liddy has donated $5,000 to McCain's campaigns since 1998, including $1,000 in February 2008. In addition, McCain has appeared on Liddy's radio show during the presidential campaign, including as recently as May. An online video labeled "John McCain On The G. Gordon Liddy Show 11/8/07" includes a discussion between Liddy and McCain, whom Liddy described as an "old friend." During the segment, McCain praised Liddy's "adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great," said he was "proud" of Liddy, and said that "it's always a pleasure for me to come on your program."

*McCain - Founding Member of the Keating Five:
McCain was one of the "Keating Five," congressmen investigated on ethics charges for strenuously helping convicted racketeer Charles Keating after he gave them large campaign contributions and vacation trips.
Charles Keating was convicted of racketeering and fraud in both state and federal court after his Lincoln Savings & Loan collapsed, costing the taxpayers $3.4 billion. His convictions were overturned on technicalities; for example, the federal conviction was overturned because jurors had heard about his state conviction, and his state charges because Judge Lance Ito (yes, that judge) screwed up jury instructions. Neither court cleared him, and he faces new trials in both courts.)
Though he was not convicted of anything, McCain intervened on behalf of Charles Keating after Keating gave McCain at least $112,00 in contributions. In the mid-1980s, McCain made at least 9 trips on Keating's airplanes, and 3 of those were to Keating's luxurious retreat in the Bahamas. McCain's wife and father-in-law also were the largest investors (at $350,000) in a Keating shopping center; the Phoenix New Times called it a "sweetheart deal."
