Sierra Club Again Targets McCain in Ohio
By Ed O'Keefe
Add the popular environmental rights group Sierra Club to a growing list of independent groups working in Ohio in support of Barack Obama and against John McCain. The new 60-second spot targets the Republican candidate for his opposition to the "clean energy industry."
"The economy's tanking and we're all worried about the future, about losing our homes, our hopes and our jobs," the ad's announcer says. "That's why we need a President we can trust to fix our economy. But John McCain has refused to support the clean energy industry -- a bright spot in our troubled economy that's projected to create millions of new jobs, and he's voted to make it easier for companies to outsource jobs."
The add continued: "Barack Obama will end tax breaks for companies that ship American jobs overseas. He'll invest $150 billion in clean energy. He'll create 5 million new jobs -- making wind turbines, solar panels, energy efficient cars and buildings."
The ad will air in the Akron, Canton, Cleveland and Youngstown markets. The group aired a similar anti-McCain radio ad in Ohio in mid-June.
In response, RNC spokeswoman Amber Wilkerson avoided direct comment on the ad's claim, saying, "Instead of lying about John McCain's record, Barack Obama and his supporters should explain how they will pay for nearly a trillion dollars in new proposed government during an economic crisis." The McCain campaign and RNC have focused most of their advertising efforts this week on raising questions about the costs of Obama's various proposals.
The Sierra Club has also organized voter outreach efforts in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia this week with Working America, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO. The groups join a growing list of pro-Obama efforts in the Buckeye State, including the SEIU's new direct mail campaign and a progressive pro-Obama Christian group's radio ads, designed to increase support for the Democratic candidate among evangelical voters.
