Analyst: Campaign Ads Sapping Market Confidence
By Matthew Mosk
Looking for someone to blame for the global economic crisis?
How about all those windbag politicians who can't stop talking about how bad things are?
That's not a bad place to start, according to Jim Courtovich, Managing Partner of Kearsarge Global Advisors (KGA), a Washington, D.C.-based government affairs and communications firm. Courtovich today released the firm's analysis of campaign advertising, and calculated that politicians and third-party groups have spent nearly $96 million on campaign ads that have "a negative message on the economy."
That was enough to purchase more than 600 ads, appearing 214,050 times.
"The trend in spending on these negative messages has no end in sight and could be a continued drag on confidence in the markets," Courtovich said.
According to the study, about half of the ads focused on the presidential campaign, a third were for congressional candidates, and the rest were ads touting candidates for state office.
Of course, it could be that all these politicians have tapped into a genuine lack of confidence in the American economy. As Washington Post political writer Chris Cillizza reported today, the new Washington Post/ABC News national poll found that just eight percent of the national sample believes the country is headed in the right direction, while a stunning 90 percent believe it is off in the wrong direction.
