Obama Shatters Fundraising Record

By Matthew Mosk
Sen. Barack Obama shattered, by a country mile, the record for dollars raised in a single month, pulling in $150 million in September, according to an e-mail the campaign sent out this morning.

"In the month of September, we raised over $150 million and added 632,000 new donors for a total 3.1 million donors to date," the campaign announced.

"The average donation for the month was less than $100."

The previous record, also set by Obama, was $67 million.

The number explains why Obama has been able to saturate the airwaves in swing states, and afford luxuries such as the half hour infomercials he plans to run later this month.

It also answers definitively the question of whether it was strategically shrewd to forgo public funds.

Republican National Committee officials have expressed concerns about the potential for abuse with small dollar fundraising on this scale. They have noted examples of fake names used to donate through the Internet. The Obama campaign has said it has vetted donations as fast as possible and would return any questionable contributions.

The number of questionable contributions identified at this point is tiny in the face of the kind of money the campaign reported today.

Plouffe describes the haul as evidence of the power of ordinary people.

"When Barack entered this race, he put his faith in the power of ordinary supporters like you coming together and building a movement for change from the bottom up," his e-mail said.

"That's exactly how we got this far -- and you should feel proud of all we have accomplished together."

Back on topic: the only reason Obama "shatters" fundraising record is because he BROKE his promise to "aggressively pursue an agreement on public financing" with McCain. If you want to vote for another President who lies to you like Bill Clinton, go right ahead. Just don't expect different results. My wife and I have already voted for McCain-Palin.

McCain and the "VICTORY" shame game

McCain and the Republicans bring dishonor to our troops by applying the "Victory/Defeat" label to Iraq.

Our troops have followed their orders and have served with honor and dignity in Iraq. To add this polarizing label is to add the burden of shame to the backs of troops that already have suffered enough. As a Vietnam vet, McCain should know what the vets of that era went through when they came home and were labeled losers.

General Patraeus himself said he'd "Never Declare Victory" in this interview on 9/11/08 of all days!

McCain is wrong and just doesn't get it.

Posted by: thenotoriousflavio | October 20, 2008 10:20 AM

First, McCain stood up to Bush on torture, so it's not accurate to say McCain did nothing. Second, I thought that guilt by association was allowed anymore -- that applies to Bush or Ayers -- also, Limbaugh and Hannity are not running for President. I dispute your opinion they are "bad" men. They give a larger percentage of their money to charity than Joe Biden does.

Now, can you answer MY questions.

Posted by: JakeD | October 20, 2008 7:05 AM

Rush Limbaugh is a bad man. Sean Hannity is a bad American. Combined they earn around $60,000,000.00 a year, and don't want to pay their fair share of taxes.

They along with other right wing nut jobs sold the american people a bad war. They said that it would cost around $87,000,000.00. Rumsfield said the war would last no longer then 6 months.

The patriot act, torture, war profiteering, and they want to talk about barack obama radical connections.

Come on man.

So, you don't mind Obama breaking his promise to "aggressively pursue an agreement on public financing"? More importantly, how many of his donations are illegal from overseas, etc.?

Hi
I just sent a rather lengthy but elegant explaination about Obamas money. But was prevented from sending, boiled down version:
What it comes down to is there are millions of us out here who live in the US but basically on our computers, we have networths from say 500000 up to 3,000,000
It is nothing to send Obama 50 or 100 every once in a while. Its what a lot of us spend at the apple store each month. Since we like this guy and want him to win what’s $1100 over 5 months? Hopefully the bog owner will publish this since he chose not to publish my more scholarly explanation.
Not just college KIDS, I’m 45.

I think this whole thing about raising multiple under-$100 contributions from 'ordinary' people (or 'folks' as Obama calls them) will be, eventually, proved a lie. My hunch, that's just that - a hunch, is that a group of Sugar Daddies are bankrolling the operation, employing 'volunteers' in a boiler room style operation. We'll see.

Oops, did I just become a racist??!!

Seems like the bigger money has started coming around these days. That's good because all the little money might have gotten a bit exhausted by now. Nice to have the big hitters opening their wallets these days. He's the people's president but if you are going to do Brother's Keeper politics he can be yours too.

Hey Obama, you’ve got this election in the bag, how about not spending the money on the campaign and using these dollars to help fellow Americans in need (i.e. http://www.BuyMyHouseBeforeTheBankTakesIt.com )?

I do plan to vote for O' this year; but politricks aside for a moment, I do lament the passing of the days when the government of this country was truly "of the people , for the people , and by the people"; if in fact there ever was such a period. These days it's really only about who can bring the most money to the table, regardless of politrickal affiliation, money that could surely be spent - especially in these trying times - directly impacting the ills both candidates purport to want to address. But as the money changers are aft to exclaim, "What are ya' gonna' do?" b

It's nice to see a campaign financed by the American people, and that is where Obama's money is coming from, millions of Americans like myself who donate amounts as little as $5-25 every month or so because we believe in our candidate. So sorry you neocons, I really don't think that John McCain has the real, heartfelt support of most Americans - but he does have the support of dittoheads like you, he has the support of fear based, hate based and downright unhappy people like you. I am sorry your lives are so empty that you so blindly hang on to a dishonorable man.

Posted by: skolniks | October 19, 2008 8:26 PM

Unlike McCain - Obama will not release the name of his donors.

It is clear that Obama is playing a cynical, political game
- promise to accept public funding, but later disregard that promise
- collect individual donations well in excess of the legal $2300 limit
- not to provide names of donors.

Obama is very likely breaking scores of election laws (not including his connections with ACORN) but in the present Nuremburg style Obama campaign, the American Public will not hear anything of it.

The Democrats are thrilled and the Republicans are bringing their best haters out.

Now the Republicans are trying to scare everyone by saying that Obama is a socialist. Well, what do they think of the handouts to big business and the pork barrelling that the GOP understands so well. If those handouts are not socialism then what are they?

I gather that socialism initiated by the GOP for its richest members is OK but help for ordinary citizens is forbidden.

Posted by: robertjames1 | October 19, 2008 8:03 PM

The best thing about Obama's campaign funding is that it comes mostly in small donations from ordinary people, not from fat cats buying influence. I don't like contributing to politicians, but this time I am. Go Obama!

I just have to laugh at some of the comments on this board. Do you really think calling Obama a socialist is going to be taken seriously by anyone?! Obama - He's the red menace!! LOL

Obama's the real deal. An American of modest means who worked hard in school, attended good schools, gave back to his community, and now serves in public office. His biography is compelling. His service to his country is to be admired. His intelligence and compassion can't be denied.

He's running one of the strongest campaigns in recent memory. Remember, about 50% of this country voted for George W Bush even after his disastrous first term! You can't expect many people that thick to change their vote even after his disastrous second term. Stupid is as stupid does and people who support Bush and McCain are a rare kind of stupid!

I have proudly contributed to Barack Obama's campaign. It is fantastic to feel the power of a real grass roots campaign in action. Three million of your neighbors have given to this ground breaking campaign. As a small business owner I think that Barack Obama is our best bet for true health care reform and for the leadership that will be required to see us out of the economic catastrophe Bush has created.

Obama Takes A HATCHET To Small Business

If you work for a small business, its profits -should Obama be elected- will be taxed at near 60% once it breaks Obama’s magic 250K, Because-

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY OBAMA WANTS TO REMOVE THE SOCIAL SECURITY PAYROLL CAP CREATING A 15.65% ADDITIONAL TAX ABOVE THE 3% ADDED INCOME TAX at this level, since LLC’s and Subchapter S small business profits pass through to the owner’s personal 1040!

If you’re the owner, you’re going to be tempted to do more with less and lay someone off-

If you’re an employee- you may, because of this new penalty on progress, be laid off.

John McCain wants to reduce business taxes and grow the economy, rather than squeeze the last drop of juice out of every successful business, large, medium, and small!
Exxon made billions, but why use a HATCHET to treat small and medium sized businesses the SAME WAY Sen.Obama?

It would be very interesting to see how much of his on-line fundraising came in from other countries and which ones it came from. Non US allies perhaps? He has already demonstrated a willingness to benefit financially from the use of his position by accepting financial support from questionable persons - AKA - Tony Resko Land Deal. Interestingly enough, had he been a Federal employee or a Hill staffer, there is a 2 year mandatory prison term tagged for this type of benefit. Congressmen actually are above this particular law. They passed the law, but are not required to comply with it. Why not repeal the law, and let all 2.7 million Federal employees profit from their positions? I wonder how corrupt the entire Federal system would look if all of them were allowed to engage in such nefarious acts - it's only a "boneheaded move" after all.

First time, first time since the Watergate scandal. OBAMA COST TAXPAYERS BILLIONS

Back in 2004, when the Republicans controlled the House, they tried to have a hearing on the threat that the financial mismanagement of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac presented to the U.S. economy. Here’s the video evidence of the Democrats defending the status quo and blocking efforts to hold officials accountable. This problem did not get the publicity it deserved in the liberal media, such as the New York Times and the Washington Post. This incredible Congressional video shows Republicans in Congress trying to regulate better Fannie Mae and how the Democrats fought that tooth and nail, even referring to criticism of former chairman Raines as a "lynching".

Although Obama raised a huge amount of money, he may loose the election if more people know that Obama is the most pro-abortion candidate in the modern history. His stance on abortion is SO EXTREME that even Nancy Pelosi does NOT SHARE Obama’s postion.
Obama, as a Illinois state senator, VOTED four times AGAINST providing immediate medical care to NEW BORN-ALIVE BABIES, letting them DIE. while all other DEMOCART senators VOTED FOR the identical federal bill, BORN ALIVE INFANT PROTECTION ACT.
Obama also supports PARTIAL BIRTH abortion, a GROUSOME BARBARIC procedure without ANASTASIA. (a mother can choose a delivery room or an abortionist to KILL THE BABY, and one of ABORTION SURVIVORS speaks AGAINST Obama).

So, Obama SUPPORTERS ARE COOPERATING in the EVIL.

Real Brother here.

I have to admit I've slid my credit card as well as given time and have worked to register voters for the Obama campaign.

This is an historic occassion, and the Racists White Supremacists and Black man hating lesbians are NOT going to ruin it.

Its interesting that right wingers are overestimating the number of Racists, White Supremacists and Black man hating lesbians in this Country.

I wonder if they will ever get a clue?

Real Brother here.

The Racists, White Supremacists and Black man hating lesbians are sick and well they should be, there days of running this country are soon to be over.

They want to point their anger at us(the compassionate liberals)but in reality they only have themselves to blame.

The RNC could have made an argument that didn't center on a rejection of Barack Obama that had nothing to do with his Race and that's their major flaw.

The fact that Obama has raised so much money from so many White, Jewish, Black and others is a testement to how many people are supporting him even some White Supremacists and some Black man hating lesbians.

The other Idiots at the RNC and the Palin rallies have failed to make their lame argument.

Whizkiz1 is no such thing. People who insult people with true intelligence do not possess it themselves. People with real intelligence have a bit of humility. We know that we do not know everything. Plus we know not to insult those who have intelligence. Now, McCain is another matter. Can you imagine a person graduating near the bottom insulting someone graduating at the top? I can. I hear McCain doing it just about everyday. I rest my case.

And let us remember, not one thin dime comes from the United States Treasury, which is broke. Obama has done this with 3.1 million private citizen donors and counting. This is the purest form of public financing. One of the latest find raising strategies in October is bound to swell the contributor rolls more.

Even during these tight times, people are opening up their pocketbooks for Obama. This should speak volumes.

Juxtapose the fact that in Septmber alone the Barack Obama campaign was able to raise the mind-boggling sum of over $150 million--a historic record!--with the fact that Obama leads McCain by 13 percentage points, 53 to 29, and you cannot help concluding that the American people have decided to make Barack Obama their next President.

This is not a lot of campaign money when you consider that there are over fifty states and how much it costs for television commercials. One commercial costs thousands of dollars. $150 million a month will buy about $16 thousand worth of commercials a day for each state.

McCain sent me an "EMERGENCY LETTER" through the post office, asking for "$75, $100 or $500." Basically, the sky is falling, and if I don't rescue the GOP with my large check, the world will end. (I threw the letter away.)

Meanwhile, my 23 year old daughter has given Obama $10 at a time, for a total of $70. She feels like she has an ownership stake in this election. Obama's e-mail invitation to her makes her feel valuable.

The difference in their approaches is obvious. Obama's success is tied directly to his email process AND his eloquent invitation to participate in change.

The muslim terrorists overseas have been providing financial support for Obama to overthrow the American Government!

OBAMA IS A SOCIALIST!
HIS MOST RECENT SERMON CLAIMS:
“I THINK WHEN YOU SPREAD THE WEALTH AROUND, IT’S GOOD FOR EVERYBODY.” What Barack means is for government taking from one group of people (the people who worked hard and earned it) and giving it to those who did not earned it (welfare cheats).

WELCOME TO BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA’S NEW AMERICA, IT’S CALLED REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH and his tax cuts for 95% of America is nothing more than Government welfare for people that don’t pay taxes at all. He’s even promising to cut taxes enough that the government’s tax share of GDP will be no more than 18.2% — which is lower than it is today.
There are several sleights of hand, but the most crafty is to redefine the meaning of “tax cut.”
For Barack Hussein Obama, a tax cut is no longer letting you keep more of what you earn. IN HIS REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH PLAN, A TAX CUT INCLUDES TENS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN GOVERNMENT HANDOUTS THAT ARE DISGUISED BY THE PHRASE “TAX CREDIT.”

Will hard working Americans support to cater to the ”parasite class” and bury the American worker further?

Mission almost accomplished.
UNLESS YOU VOTE FOR THE PATRIOT JOHN MCCAIN, AND PRESERVE AMERICA AND OUR AMERICAN VALUES!

Powell's criticism of Palin was striking. The tone of the campaign and where the party has headed to win got Obama the endorsement. Lewis I think may have moved Powell somewhat, especially considering his not equating McCain with segregation but with stirring up hatred. You saw the pain in his face knowing he was misinformed and so misinform everyone else. His Iraq scenario and judgements were spot on. The military I think will vote Obama because of Palin. Virginia polls point this way because of rancid attacks and the Palin reason.

Public financing of elections is dead forever. McCain could very well lose this election due to his naive support for election reform. Obama was brilliant to make the move to go for $$$ and forget about this naive idea that money should be removed from elections. Expect fund raising to increase dramatically in future elections.

Many of the liberals that post here do not believe in any opposition parties or any choices, but when the tables are turned in the future they may look back at this and regret the massive money that was injected into politics.

John McCain tried to control Obama and the flow of money to the campaigns. He also wanted to control the flow of the debates. Obama saw this and denied McCain from having this advantage. Now seeing that his scam was undercut McCain is crying foul. There was only an agreement to talk about taking campaign finance and that was done, and Obama’s camp chooses not to. Obama’s financing is coming from small donors like myself. I have been giving 25$ a month, not a lot but there are millions of small donors like me. This somehow in McCain’s thought process is corrupt; I don’t understand how he can think this. It is a more honorable way to receive contributions, then to spread the wealth to your campaign from the government.

Posted by: kimb54 | October 19, 2008 2:11 PM

I fully agree with mavisdarling.

Obama has been so successful raising money, in large part because so many of us are flat terrified of Sarah-the-Small-Brain.

The mere thought of that woman -- with all her insight into foreign affairs ("I can see Alaska from my house!!") and the economy -- one step from the presidency is enough to make many of us gag.

And, I can't help thinking that it would be just like McCain-the-Contrarian to drop dead about six months into office.

Can you imagine her trying to negotiate a strategic arms treaty with Putin and Medvedev?

Didn't think so.

Will Obama be spreading this wealth around? Spreading the wealth around is what Stalin’s intellectual elite supporters used to talk about just before he starved 100s of thousands of Russians.

If you tax Joe the Plumber 3% more, Joe is going to raise his prices 5% more and everyone, including the poor, will pay the tax for him after our income has already been taxed. That's the way it works. We pay all the taxes no matter where they're collected from.

It's hard to imagine that we will be able to borrow all of the money that these guys want to spend, let alone have the dollar be worth a penny if we do.

Both of these guys are offering major tax cuts. Tax cuts cost money and neither one of them has said how they're going to pay for them. Obama's tax increases on people making over $250K per year is not going to do it. This will lead to more borrowing and an increase in the national debt that will soon be $11 trillion, which will lead to inflation, which means we will all pay for the tax cuts. It doesn't matter if the tax cuts are for business or Citizens. We will pay.

This is business as usual at a time when our economy is collapsing. "Look", "my friends", this is total madness.

It's past time to stop doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results each time.

I'm an American who has been donating to Obama, too, and I will continue to. I chose him because of the issues, and I find him inspiring. I try to vote for the best for all Americans, not just what's best for me. I'm a small part of a very large country, and I try not to forget that.

I feel like the election has changed McCain. I feel like he has put himself first and his country second by choosing Palin and trying to roll out the carpet for the far right. We all have the right to believe in what we want to believe, but I never felt that was what he stood for in the first place. And, if the Keating 5 was his biggest mistake, like he has stated, why hasn't he insisted that the Republican party not take money from lobbyists? I'm so proud of Obama's committment of not taking money from lobbyists being adopted by the Democratic party.

I think about how if Obama becomes president, how can he use his huge fundraising network for the better of the country. What else can we do? Local community service for Federal initiatives?Sign me up!

Commentary: Obama's Flip-Flop on Public Financing
Sam Donaldson on What Motivated Obama's Switch

by SAM DONALDSON
June 19, 2008—

The following is a commentary by ABC News' Sam Donaldson. Click here to view a video version of Sam's latest essay

Senator Obama has announced he will opt out of public financing for the general election. He says he will "forgo" more than $80 million in public funds and go it alone.

How was that decision made?

This reporter obtained a transcript of the meeting during which the Obama team made the decision.

Someone said, "We want to do this but we've got a problem last September you wrote that you would aggressively pursue an agreement with your Republican opponent for public financing. And then last February, when Tim Russert asked you why you wouldn't keep your word on that, you said you would sit down with John McCain and make sure that we have a system that is fair for both sides."

"Yes," says someone else, "but you didn't really promise to do it, just to 'pursue an agreement,' and let's face it, if we're free to raise a ton of money above the public financing limit we can bury McCain with more television ads than any candidate has ever been able to run in the history of presidential politics."

"Okay," says someone else. "But we've got to word the announcement in a way that makes it sound like we are actually taking the high ground in this matter. That we are the ones fighting against the big money in politics."

Well of course, I have no such transcript, I don't know what they said to each other, but I do know what Sen. Obama said on his Web site about this.

He said it was not an easy decision because he supports a robust system of public financing of elections & but the system as it exists today is broken and his opponents are masters of gaming the broken system.

Therefore, said Sen. Obama, he wants to declare his independence from such a broken system and run the type of campaign that reflects the grassroots values that have already changed our politics and brought us this far.

All I can say is, here's to the high ground and here's to change ain't it great?

Palicain talks about Socialism and Welfare, talk about hypocracy, when Mcain received 89 Million from the Taxpayers, my friends that is Welfare. When Iraq gets 1 trillion for a war we should never have fought(The only reason for the war was for GW to get reelected) and which republicans bungled up. That is called Welfare to the GOP,
you betchya !!

Posted by: dea1 | October 19, 2008 12:50 PM

The FACT that he received $150 million with an AVERAGE donation of around $80 is the real story here.

Obama isn't getting huge checks from Big Oil or corrupt lobbyists (that's McCain's wheelhouse). Obama is supported by Middle Class America.

I'm so proud of my social class... that's not something I thought I'd ever really say in my life!!

Posted by: jgarrisn | October 19, 2008 12:50 PM

Nope, bill40. You're wrong. Obama's winning because he has the American people's support, and people really believe in him. McCain decided to try to narrow his "enthusiasm gap" by embracing the far right wing of his party. As Colin Powell said on Meet the Press this morning, the Republicans continue to narrow their party.

Then they insinuate--or explicitly charge--that those who disagree with them are anti-American. They distract, they smear, they smirk, they threaten. Guess what? "Real" Americans are sick of it. And that's why Obama is winning, and that's why millions of "real" Americans have donated their time and money.

McCain has no one to blame but himself for listening to the folks who try to win campaigns by dividing the middle class against each other through the ridiculous culture wars, and meanwhile when they get in office they line the pockets of the rich. You can keep your Carly Fiorinas, Rick Davises, and Phil Gramms. The rest of us have had enough, and that's why we've contributed. It's not "unfair" or "dangerous" that the American people exercise their rights to support their candidate. I much prefer that than more lobbyists and corporate donors.

I'm another one who had never in my life contributed $ to a political campaign... until the night of Sarah Palin's convention speech.

I sat at this computer with tears in my eyes and sent Obama's campaign 50 bucks... and have every week since.

So he changed his mind about taking public financing? SO WHAT? Was it a lie? Maybe. Probably. Do I care? NO. NO. and NO!!! This is POLITICS folks! He changed his mind when he realized how LOW the Republicans will go with their lies and smears.

Apparently, he made the right decision.

Posted by: mavisdarling | October 19, 2008 12:32 PM

Money wins, not the American people.

Barack Obama has killed the federal financing of presidential campaigns that has served our country well over 30 years.

Why is he leading in Virginia? Because he's air-bombing McCain and outspending him 8 to 1. Why is West Virginia in play? The same reason.

For a campaign that is far left, it is odd that a product of the far left -- financing presidential campaigns -- would be killed by one of its own.

I hope one of President Obama's first moves is to REQUIRE federal financing of campaigns and put the silliness his campaign has demonstrated to rest for our country's future.

Count me as one of the "older folks who were really turned off by George W. Bush and the stupid, useless war in Iraq," Although I am only 51. I felt so powerless and angry at our stupid govt policies, I thought at least I can donate some money and maybe it will make a difference. I give $50 at a time. When John McCain selected Sarah Palin, I gave $50 more. I used to respect John McCain for some of his ideas and policies, but what is he thinking? I really question his judgement on VP selection. The negative ads smearing Obama by association with certain persons also pissed me off, so I donated again. But I am actually sick of the whole presidential campaign stuff and can't wait for it to be over, whoever wins.

I've donated many times now to Obama, and I have never donated to any political campaign before. Obama is the first politician I have truly been proud to throw my support and dollars behind. He is the greatest man ever to run for political office in this country. In many ways, America does not deserve him.

Posted by: GeorgHerbet | October 19, 2008 12:15 PM

Go for the throat. Challenge Mccain to prove the smears.
Play it safe and lose the undecideds.
The Obama TV ads I see are tame, stale and not even making an attempt to counter the smears.

All these people fighting tooth and nail to support Obama and he won't even go all out to defend himself, his party and his supporters against the smears. Very disheartening.

Posted by: torro67 | October 19, 2008 12:12 PM

At least you noticed that he is a liar.

Posted by: 12oreo | October 19, 2008 12:11 PM

Did you notice how Obama lied about taking the public money- of course you didn't.

I did notice. They both got to the deadline of having to announce who wanted the free money. McCain realized he would not have the financial support of people like you and opted for the free money. He took the most advantageous route available to him. He figured to play safe and grabbed the government financed election money. Yes, he sealed his own fate.

While our friend Sen. Obama said I think I will be able to raise more money on my own from my supporters. You know, Bill Ayers, the entire muslim world, al-Qaeda, etc.

So Obama made a strategic move and won. It's like a poker game and Obama got the big pile of chips. McCain lost that hand. Oh well. Not the first or last political hand McCain would lose this summer.

So yes I did notice. Good move Barack.

Now if you are going to whine about how he said he was going to take the free government money and didn't then go ahead. He was under no obligation to do so. His choice was a campaign move anyone else would have done.

Fact is McCain would have loved to have done the same thing. But he was screwed with no one sending him the money then to convince him he would be better off.

Is McCain envious right now? Hell yes! Does he wish the shoes were reversed? Hell yes. And well run cmpaign would have done the same thing if they were in that position. To think otherwise of them is to not understand the reality of the campaign.

So go and whine about it. Tell us it's unfair that Obamam chose to raise his own money. You are going to need a whole lot more rationalizations as to why McCain lost the lection come Novemeber. Add this one to the top of your list.

McCain got slammed dunked on this issue. And after the election is over and they analyze what happened, read: How Obama beat McCain, this will be a big factor.

So as they say in poker, read them and weep.

Posted by: patrick10 | October 19, 2008 12:08 PM

gracedelvillar,

I donated to Obama's camaign and I've never donated to a campaign before in 34 years if voting, both during the primaries and the general election. I could only afford $25 each time, the same as most others who donated. Obviously, Obama has wide-spread voter support from middle-class voters who manage to scrape a little money from tight budgets to support change from the last 8 years.

So yeah, I know someone who donated. Me.

Posted by: Peahen55 | October 19, 2008 12:08 PM

Obama should challenge McCain instead of playing it safe.
Prevent defense are for suckers.

Obama should take his secret service detail and go straight to the next McCain- rally/idiot-fest.
He should field questions from the crowd on every smear McCain has put out.
Mega news coverage. Mega video clips to be used in TV ads.

And bring 2 "liberal" plumbers to ask Mccain a few questions.

Posted by: torro67 | October 19, 2008 12:08 PM

And he is still gonna lose.
He has run another wimpy campaign. He should have responded instantly to every GOP attack.
Joe Plummer is on TV accusing Obama of using him and refusing to take questions.
Obama should counter w/ ads where he goes and fields questions from the most rabid conservatives.

Those smears add up, and Obama will lose the undecides and the election.

First Obama's support came from idealistic liberals and bright-eyed college kids. It came from older folks who were really turned off by George W. Bush and the stupid, useless war in Iraq. People signed up to work and money came in.

Then more folks began to pay attention because of Obama's powerful vision for change and for the inspiration he provided in speeches about the better side of human nature. Tens of thousands began to go to his rallies - more people signed up and more Money came in.

Then he won the hard-fought Democratic nomination and CHOSE WISELY a seasoned running mate. And, the energized Hillary supporters joined the campaign - like two rivers flowing together and tens of thousands of Hilary supporters signed up for Barack and donated money to his campaign. Independent Americans saw that and they began to sign up and even more came in.

Then came McCain and we waited to see how he would match the worldly wise Biden with his own Veep pick. And then came Palin.

And then she spoke and out came gibbersih and tons of fodder for the late night comics. And, she becan to reveal more strange ideas -- half-baked and clearly the product of a silly juvenile world-view. And folks turned back toward the sane and calm Obama and more folks signed up and more money came in.

And, then came the economic collapse -- and McCain's weirdly unresponsive set of sputtering mis-steps. And, with that, the conservatives began to desert him - and donate money to Obama - and positive comments and news opinion. And, independents and undecided saw all this and turned to Obama and more money came in and more people signed up.

And, finally, McCain read the polls and got angry --and started going really, really negative. And Palin began flailin' and getting more shrill and wild-eyed. And, her crowds began to include very angry people who were widly covered by the media. And the people listened - and then turned to the campaign that offered something more uplifting and positive. More money came in and many more people signed up.

Now Mccain is calling Obama a socialist and Palin is calling many, many Americans "not real Americans. She is adopting a much more strident tone and accusing folks of being anti-American if they do not embrace the politics of unfocused rage.

And, the Americans are reacting to the politics of anger and rage and intolerance and sending even more money in to the Obama campaign and signing up to work on his befalf.

Last month, September ---in just one month --632,000 NEW supporters signed up and gave the Obama campaign an additional $150,000,000.00.

If Obama calls for another small donation from the 3.1 million voters who are currently signed up as supporters - and just 2/3rds of them respond with a tiny $20.00 gift each to the campaign -- that's an additional FORTY MILLION DOLLARS.

See a pattern emerging?

My wife and I were VERY HAPPY TO BE A SMALL PART of that 150 million.

It great to learn that Campaign manager David Plouffe, ‘…said the campaign [has] added 632,000 new donors in September, for a total of 3.1 million contributors to the campaign. He said the average donation was $86.’
We caucused for McCain but McCain stumbled and bumbled us right into the arms of Senator Obama. McCain showed extremely poor judgment in selecting Palin. McCain's choice of Palin, who is NOT READY to be President, made our choice of Obama easy!!

Posted by: carolo43 | October 19, 2008 11:24 AM

as a democrat, the one thing i am concerned with during this election is that class struggle has permeated into the basic promises of the candidates. should obama take his taxation promise to its end, and tax heavily those making greater than $250,000 per year, the consequences may not be what is hoped for. here is the reason: obama is right in stating that the majority of small business owners make less than $250,000 per year. these are probably the ubiquitous small service type businesses that one sees everyday. they have few employees and pay little and have marginal benefits, if any at all. what i worry about is the businesses that are in manufacturing or industry. should the tax rates for these folks increase, they will simply do what is their right and move their operations to another country where they can save on employee costs and make up for their income loss to taxation. one only has to look at origin of the screen they are reading this on to see how easy it is to outsource manufacturing.

Shocked that Americans are not the fools we have pretended to be for the last 8 years.
Shocked that there are still thinking persons in this country who can look beyond the next hill, news article, TV commercial, and 6 pack of beer, to see the manipulation to be negative and give up on the better, higher aspirations of all will be more important and worth investing in than the empty promise of Tax cuts.

Last night while watching my Colorado Buffalo football team win (YIPPEE!!!!), I was amazed at the many 527 attack ads trying to "swift boat" Obama. Immediately after the game I logged on and donated $25 to Obama. I am a former Republican, a homebuilder, and very concerned about the economy. Prosperity will return much faster with an Obama victory! I am a homebuilder and know a bit about the economic meltdown. It is complex and we need someone with intelligence who can understand it and navigate to the best solutions. McCain is a "washed up" old Senator who lacks the curiosity to understand and is too complacent to care because of his wealth. Socialism is rearing it's ugly head BECAUSE of Republican mismanagment of our economy. We are in a new Gilded Age which threatens to put us on the path to a Banana Republic. Go OBAMA/BIDEN! America needs you badly!!!!

Interesting how Republicans have show their true values this election. The commenter who said obviously doesn't want to discuss McCain's history with campaign financing - which led to a lawsuit. He didn't just change his mind about it, he changed his mind AFTER TAKING THE MONEY AND AGREEING TO THE LIMITS during the primary. Quick reminder from one of the hundreds of stories written at the time: "Mr. McCain had applied for public financing for the primary for his campaign when his campaign was struggling but he decided to bypass the system after his fundraising improved. The public financing system gives candidates access to millions of dollars in matching money from a taxpayer fund but forces them to abide by strict spending caps before the party conventions. Mr. McCain has by now exceeded the $54 million cap that he would have been bound by under public financing."

And you gotta wonder - what's the average donation at the McCain campaign?

Now, we are know how desperate America is for change. Obama funds are not coming from taxpayers dollars unlike McCain.
Colin Powell gave an excellent speech today, and believe as most Americans, that Palin is not ready for prime time. I cannot imagine if she was to become President. McCain made a serious mistake with the selection of Palin, and the continued remarks about Ayers, a college Professor at Chicago University.

Posted by: mimiknight | October 19, 2008 10:37 AM

I've donated to Obama four times since he started running in the primaries. I don't have a lot of money--for demographic purposes, I'm 31 years old, married, white, a low-level computer tech--but I gave Obama what I could afford, because the Republicans have destroyed everything that I used to value about America. I used to love my country because it valued truth, justice, freedom of speech, human rights, and the rule of law above everything else. I thought these things were unquestionable. But the Bush Administration has shocked me into reality.

Now Barack Obama is bringing back my faith in this country. I don't care about socialism. I don't care about Bill Ayers. I don't care about ACORN. I don't care about Joe the Plumber. I care about health care, and I care about war. I want a President that I can trust, and by that I mean: make a real effort to reform health care; not invade countries; not torture people in secret prisons; not engage in executive power-grabs. That's a pretty low standard, admittedly, but that's the standard that the Republicans have left us with. I trust that Obama will exceed that standard, and I'll continue to give him as much money as I can.

Obama's ability to raise money that if he can succeed in this sort of record-breaking fundraising through the modest contributions of citizens - and organize the most focuses volunteer campaign force ever - he can do much more than John McCain to handle the cruicial matters of money and organization needed to put America back on track?

Geez...it's most amazing to see what happens when millions of average Americans, young, old, wealthy, poor, white, black, brown, etc.
all decide that they not only need change but they deserve and want better, more competent government.

Watching Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack today was powerful. Seeing the breath and depth of support that Barack has garnered makes me feel hopeful again...proud that Americans can be retrospective and thoughtful and do the right thing. Sometimes it just takes awhile to get there.

Contrary to what some writers are saying about supporters being a cult, me and my friends and relatives, all middled aged, working class white folks from a small town, came behind Barack after meeting with him, after reading and talking about his leadership style, experience, intellect and temperment. I think that he'll prove to be a very effective, competent President...just the opposite of what we've had for 8 long, difficult years.

I love the right wingers complaining about Obama's money -- the republicans usually win the money war and gloat over it and now cry foul - let's see what you've brought us in 8 LONGGGGG years, 911, lied about weapons of mass destruction, no bid contracts, katrina, enron, exxon, torture, gitmo, stock market crash, housing crash, life expectancy from 17th to 47th by country, spying on americans, firing US attorneys for politics, rolling blackouts, doubled national debt, let bin laden get away, outs a CIA agent for politics, IRS corp audits dwon to 10% of previous levels, IRS audita of the middle class up 200%, tax cuts for the wealthiest, weealthiest income is up 750% over 8 years, ave wages down, jobs lost, housing crash, powell lies at UN, 1st case of mad cow disease, 20% of US w/ no health care, - and i;m sure there;s many more.....Don't believe this list - GOOGLE IT!!.. and the right is worrying about someone would lives 8 miles away from OBAMA? Immediately following the debate I logged on and donated $25. I am a homebuilder in Colorado and a fiscal conservative. My 87 year old mother, a life-long Republican, calls me a socialist, even though I explain my staunch support for a free market. Her position on the economy is simple: she hates all taxes. As an independent voter I have been able to objectively compare both parties. Republicans are no longer the conservatives but have evolved into thugs and cynics. Democrats, although I may not agree with everything, are the party of thoughtful, respectful and informed voters.
Republicans need to clean house.

It may be "shrewd" to break a promise, but a broken promise it still remains.

P.S. to K2007:

Some foreigners are "desperate" for CHANGE too. Unfortunately, it is illegal for non-citizens or non-residents to contribute to his campaign.

That's a maverick. Now shut up.

1 Corinthians 10:21 NIV
Warnings From Israel's History
21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons.

Your title is very optimistic however, I seriously doubt that Conservative America will be convinced that voting for a Socialist agenda is the right thing to do. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, a Republican, said "A right delayed is a right denied", while Senator Obama said "Just because you have a right doesn't mean that the state or local government cannot CONSTRAIN that right". There is indeed something sinister about Socialism. Marx described it as a step between capitalism and communism. No true American wants convert to communism, and on November 4, people will be convicted in their hearts that a step in that direction is not a step "One Nation Under God" wants to go. You cannot have the freedom to succeed without also having the freedom to fail.

I have donated twice now, in support of Obama. After my first donation, every time I read the about the lies and read the twisted posts of his supporters, I was encouraged to donate again and so I did.

To the poster who wanted to know how to contribute to Barack's campaign, go to BarackObama.com, the offical web site of his campaign.

American's deserve better than this nightmare the neocons have fostered, and it is time to vote for someone that will lead this country in a new direction, and not vote for the new neocon canidate, John McCain. Given a chance, he may well turn out to be worse than Bush.

Donate and vote for Obama for a better tomorrow.

Posted by: DrWho2 | October 19, 2008 10:06 AM

I am one of those little people who has steadily contributed to our campaign every month since January. But this past week I not only contributed money, I went to PA from up here in Upstate NY to knock on doors and make phone calls. All of it firsts for a 54 year old. vThat alone is telling for the energy Obama generates.

Anyone with half a brain who takes the time to actually listen to what Obama is saying knows he is thinking of us and the U.S., and not himself as the Republican attack machine suggests. I know the money I have sent has been used wisely, I doubt you can get one McCain supporter to say that about his campaign.

Posted by: AverageJane | October 19, 2008 10:04 AM

First Obama's support came from idealistic librals and brighteyed youth. It came from folks who were really turned off by George W. Bush and the stupid, useless war in Iraq.
Money came in and people signed up.

Then more folks joined up because of Obama's powerful vision for change and for the inspiration he provides in speeches about the better side of human nature. More Money came in and people signed up.

Then he won the Democratic nomination and chose wisely a seasoned running mate. And, the energized Hillary supporters joined the campaign - like two rivers flowing together and tens of thousands of Hilary supporters signed up for Barack and donated money to his campaign. More Money came in and people signed up.

And folks turned back toward the sane and calm Obama and ore Money came in and people signed up.

And, then came the economic collapse --and McCain's weirdly un responsive set of sputtering mis-steps. And, the conservatives began to desert him - and donate money to Obama - and news opinion. And, independents and undecided saw all this and turned to Obama and ore Money came in and people signed up.

More Money came in and people signed up.

Now Mccain is calling Obama a socialist and Palin is calling many, many Americans "not real Americans. She is adopting a much more strident tone and accusing folks of being anti-American if they do not embrace the politics of unfocused rage.

And, the Americans are reacting to the politics of anger and rage and intolerance and sending even more money in to the Obama campaign. Last month, 632,000 NEW supporters signed up and gave the Obama campaign an additional $150,000,000.00.

See a pattern emerging?

Posted by: gandalfthegrey | October 19, 2008 10:04 AM

When you see the money and the people that support Sen. Obama you really have to wonder how the polls can be so close. 42% McCain 50% Obama. The polls should be more like McCain 30% Obama 65%
BTW, Obama has 345 electoral votes to McCain's 166 electoral votes.
It takes 270 to win. As you can see, McCain/Palin don't have any chance of winning.

I am cheering for change in more ways than one. This Man, like it or not represents the better of two cultures. Understanding that some will not like him, no matter how well educated, no matter what he says or how he expresses himself. The fact is, he is a good man, and he is everything that America said we wanted in a Black man. Educated, great father, free of crime and of great moral values. He is even married to an African American woman. Got to love him.

To those that chalk is eloquence up to a tele-prompter. Remember, to be a good speaker, you must be able to read and think.

As for Rev. Right, he was speaking about the same American NOT America that stood against the Abolishment of slavery. Who ignore that reality of Black Life in America because it is easier than accepting you know who you are!

Jessie too is a decent Man. He has fallen victim to a moral issue, but them so have many great men. Of course the racist would like the rebels to take a seat.

I could go on and on, but I think everyone reading my rant understands where I am coming from.

Posted by: tony22 | October 19, 2008 10:03 AM

Yep. The right wing trolls are out, trying to tell us we've been scammed, we're idiots, we're voting for an anti-American. Do you not see that this is reason we are voting for Obama, who doesn't call people who disagree with him anti-American? He could easily bring up G Gordon Liddy or the Alaska Independence Party, and just....doesn't.

What you can't deal with is that these ARE real Americans, who saved money specifically to donate to this man, primarily out of disgust for the very smears and, yes, anti-American garbage that is getting spewed by the right wing.

So, keep defending the billionaires, lobbyists, and CEOs who are McCain's and the RNC's contributors and advisers. You're not going to convince me that Carly Fiorina has my best interests at heart. You're probably the same people who voted for Bush twice and thought Dick Cheney had your best interests at heart.

As a Marxist-Socialist, Obama says and does whatever he has to to win because for him

Will you be thrown under the bus?

Today 9/18/08 I read that Louis Farrakan the Islamic leader in Chicago is starting the New Nation of Islam as Barack Obama is poised to take the White House. Obama, Ayers and Farrakan all live within 8 blocks of each other. Obama's preacher Reverend Wright gave Farrakan an award for in Wright's opinion being an outstanding leader. Farrakan's belief is all whites are from the devil and that blacks are the chosen people of Allah. I think it is interesting how all of these factors and events are so closely related. Abraham Lincoln said,"It is not the enemy from outside I fear, but the enemy within."
The media and cult behavior of Obama's supporters and his questionable associates should be an alarm to us. Obama and his beliefs are a threat to our way of American life.

"In a blind Kingdom the one-eyed man is king."

It's political psychopaths like you who are the ruination of your party.Your arrogant and one-sided attention to the entirety of issues has led to your downfall.Shame on you.
The whining that you show now will pale in comparison to your whining on November 4.Reinvent yourselves or find another country;personally,I hope for the latter.

For those of you who are so proud to be part of this "record" think about this.
This takes Obama's total donation over $600,000,000.00! All of it supposedly in increments under $200.00 dollars, so that the exact amounts don't have to be disclosed. All the while he is the picked favorite of people like Jimmy Hoffa, Jr President of the AFL, and Oprah Winfry. Who according to the records have also donated only $200.00! And this doens't count the money that has been generated directly into the DNC accounts!

So you can try to explain this one away, but when the Federal Election Commission finishes its investigation, which has alreday started, and there are confirmed donations of millions from individuals that are very rich, you can say, 'well the republicans have done it in the past!'

In the meantime both the Retardicans and the Dummycrats will continue to spend HUGH amounts on this election that could be much better put to use, and prove the candidates commitment to the people they supposedly want to serve, by sending those donations to one of the 7 states where the unemployment coffers are gone! Or they could set up aid centers for those who have been truly hurt by the stupid economic policies that CONGRESS has passed over the last 20 years and that the majority of members of both parties have voted for.

So just remember: When is a politician lying? When their mouth is moving and words are coming out!

Just two weeks ago both candidates had a chance to prove that they are committed to CHANGE. What did they do? One very thoughtfully - waited to see; the other rushed to action; and then they followed the exact same course and voted to devaluate your money even further and to make you pay for it. And they both did so for the same basic reason; "Something had to be done." Neither took the time to think of a good solution, present it and pressed to have it passed. They just followed the crowd and voted to give away $850 billion dollars that don't even really exist!

BE VIGILENT BE EXTREMELY VIGILENT!

ANOTHER 2 WEEKS OF HARD WORK ESPECIALLY WITH THOSE INDEPENDNET VOTERS WHOSE NAMES ON ELECTION DATABASE IS PURPOSEFULLY MISPELT BY NEOCONS CLERCKS SYMPATHISERS OR WITH WRONG D.O.B. SO THAT THESE INDEPEDENT VOTERS WONT BE ABLE TO VOTE ON THE DAY.

ANOTHER UNFAIR TACTIC IS TO MAKE SURE INDEPENDENT VOTERS ARE NOT CONLY REGISTERED AS GOP VOTERS VIA FRAUD TECHNQUE AS WAS THE CASE IN CALIFORNIA WHEN VOTERS THOUGHT THEY WERE SIGNING A PETITION AGAINST CHILD MOLESTERS.

IT WAS IN FACT A FRAUD TECHNIQUE TO COLLECT AS MANY NAMES BY THE YRC or YCR(A small Republican Company) THAT YOU GIVE THEM CONSENT TO BE REGISTERED AS A REPUBLICAN WITHOUT YOUR PRIOR KNOWLEDGE!

THE THIRD FRAUD IS IN THE SOIFTWARE OF CERTAIN VOTING MACHINES WHERE IN CERTAIN DISTRICTS IF YOU PRESS YOUR FINGER ON THE SCREEN TO VOTE FOR OBAMA, THE VOTE IS SWITCHED TO MCCAIN!

I AM SURE THIS SOFTWARTE WORKS ON PROBABILITY, MAKING SURE EVERY VOTE COUNTS FOR MCCAIN AND A PORTION OF OBAMA'S VOTE SWITCHED TO MCCAIN!

THATS WHY IT IS CRUCIAL TO HAVE INDEPENDENT OBSERVERS CHECKING THESE CLAIMS AND SUPERVISION FROM BOTH PARTIES TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS FAIR!

IN CASE OF MISPELLING OR WRONG D.O.B. PEOPLE STILL MUST BE ALLOWED TO VOTE AS PART OF THEIR PATRIOTIC DUTY WITH THE SUPPORT OF INDEPENDENT BODIES IN LOCAL PLACES WHERE COMMON SENSE MUST PREVAIL AS LONG AS THEY HAVE IDs TO PROVE WHO THEY TRULY ARE!

BE VIGILENT! BE EXTREMELY VIGILENT ON THE 4TH NOVEMBER!

Wow. It's sad to see the right-wing trolls pounce on ordinary Americans donating small amounts of money. They'd prefer the corporate donors of Bush and McCain, the lobbyists, and the multi-millionaires who contribute to the RNC. It's kind of like how Joe the Plumber wants his boss to receive more in tax breaks than he wants to receive.

Face it: Obama's campaign has been supported by a large number of Americans who are sick of the divisive tactics of the extreme right wing. You trolls can try to discredit these numbers all you want. But the fact is that it is people just like me and my husband--who donated $25 here and there(and gave even more in September once Palin's views became better known)--that helped make this number possible.

Don't believe it? Well, look what is happening in Michelle Bachmann's race. She got on tv and claimed that anyone in the other party could be "anti-American," and her opponent raised $500K within 24 hours. I donated $10 to that one too.

I don't begrudge people having different political philosophies than I have, but I am sick to the core of hearing that I am anti-American or that there are pro-American parts of the country. This garbage has dominated us for 8 years, and we have had enough!

Posted by: ethel08 | October 19, 2008 9:45 AM

On top of raising unprecedented sums of money down the homestretch of the campaign,it has just been reported that Colin Powell has endorsed Barack Obama. This double whammy, alongside the economic crisis, signals the end of the McCain-Palin ticket.
Future Republican candidates will have to repent of their political sins and reinvent themselves in order to remain a viable party over the next few years.
Congratulations,America, our long national nightmare is almost over. Now,go to the polls and seal the deal!

Some of the commenters here who are "raising questions" in a seemingly innocent way are hilarious. Jealous much, guys? Our candidate possesses the quality of competency--something your candidate's campaign cannot muster even with lies, a lousy VP pick, threats and vile inferences. http://soonerthought.blogspot.com/2008/10/palin-plunge-voters-sour-on-mccain-vp.html

3.1 million Americans have supported this campaign. That is the most amazing number of this announcement. Yes Steve Forbes Ross Perot and others have had to buy the White House with their own money, but they never had anything like this.

Now we have two more weeks of angry protests and vitriolic attacks trying to distract real patriotic Americans from turning the page on these last eight dark years.

Thank the Lord Barack Obama and his 3.1 million friends and counting will have the resources to defend ourselves and shine the light on these sure to be soulless two weeks of angry attacks.

Keep the faith this fine fall Sunday Obama supporters, hope is on the way.

Posted by: Halfaworldaway | October 19, 2008 9:38 AM

Unbelievable. Obama can run ads everywhere in the home stretch. GA, WV, ND, MT as well as the other swing states. And they'll be positive ads too.

But think of the GOTV operation in place. Anybody who has canvassed for Obama knows how organized they are. My wife and parents went to western NC yesterday (I live in East TN) and worked a very rural and working class white community. They found almost complete and enthusiastic support for Obama. This is the Appalachian South and they're looking beyond race. With the GOTV operation there - including neighboring state volunteers from TN and SC - North Carolina may very well tip the balance.

It was only last month that the media was reporting that the Obama Campaign was in the middle of a financial crisis and that having not forgo public finances is hurting him because it is taking him off the campaign trail. If I knew that having as little brain cell as possible, and postulating wildly about the future I should promptly switch occupation from a bum to a stockbroker, or a reporter.

By the way, the same people who have been keepking the Obama campaign in money are also going to turn up to vote. Get used to the idea Republicans!

Posted by: thisworld | October 19, 2008 9:27 AM

I know my dad in Washington and my half siblings in New York have donated to Obama. The way I hear from them, people are falling over themselves to donate to him for the election. The Republicans just better get used to having the table turned against them for a change. Sore losers!

Posted by: thisworld | October 19, 2008 9:25 AM

I haven't donated to Obama yet, where can I do it?

Posted by: Serge_Birbrair | October 19, 2008 9:20 AM

Though the right wingers will cry FRAUD, there's simply no way to raise this much money - under our open finance laws - without having a HUGE number of Americans supporting this man. I am so proud to be a part of this historical campaign.

Major U.S. newspapers endorse Obama

U.S. Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has attracted the support of more than three times as many newspapers as his Republican opponent John McCain.

Obama picked up the backing of several major dailies, including the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune, WHICH HAS NEVER endorsed a Democratic nominee for president.

In endorsing the senator from Illinois, his home-town newspaper wrote that it has observed his political rise from the front lines and can vouch for his ability.

The Detroit Free Press said At a time when America clearly needs some changes, Democrat Barack Obama is not only proposing better ones but is also better suited to the job of getting them done.

The Washington Post emphatically endorsed him as "the right man for a perilous moment."

The Los Angeles Times said Obama "represents the nation as it is, and as it aspires to be."

Posted by: WVUWEIRTON | October 19, 2008 9:13 AM

It's the power of positive energy. And it looks like the republicans are getting upset that finally a democrat is beating them at their old game. When repubicans were raising hellish amounts of money they gleamed with greed. Now that the tables are turned, and a smarter demmocrat used technology and positive thinking to stop their greed, they are now crying foul.
