Biden Campaign Releases Some Medical Records for Review

By Perry Bacon Jr.
Democratic vice-presidential nominee Sen. Joe Biden is in "excellent health," according to a physician who reviewed his medical records on behalf of the Barack Obama presidential campaign.

Biden's doctor, John Francis Eisold, attending physician for the United States Capitol, does not speak to reporters, according to Biden aides, but in a letter to Biden that the campaign allowed reporters to review, Eisold described Biden as "recovered fully without continued effects" from a 1988 brain aneurysm.

The information was released in the wake of renewed questions about the extent of the candidates' medical disclosures. In a conference call with reporters today, Dr. Matthew Parker, an internist in Washington who reviewed Biden's health records and talked to Eisold, said "Dr. Eisold, his treating doctor, thinks he's in excellent health."

Biden campaign aides allowed reporters to review several dozen pages of his health records at Perkins Coie, a Washington law firm. In a procedure other presidential and vice-presidential candidates have used, reporters were allowed to take notes but could not photocopy the records or take them outside of a room the firm.

Biden had requested an update on his health from Eisold this summer at the same time he was being considered as a vice-presidential candidate. In his letter, Eisold detailed Biden's health, noting that he has normal blood pressure (120/78) and some allergies for which that he takes regular medication.

It is great that Joe Biden is considered healthy today. I guess he is over his asthma, which prevented him from serving during the Vietnam era, and he was classified as unfit for military service except in case of national emergency. During CNN's "Joe Biden Revealed" there was no mentioned of his getting 3-4 college deferments and failing his physical, but they did show how he was a dynamic football player in High School. True journalism!

The mental health records for McCain should be examined to see why he picked a running mate like Palin.

I'd rather he picked Jerry Springer, as he would make a much better Vice President than Palin - who may even end up as President of the USA should she ever become Vice President.

Who would then think her so funny?

What I find interesting, above and beyond the many expressions of concern over the entirely relevant "clinico-political" concerns about Senator McCain's melanoma history, and his level of cognitive function, is the almost complete lack of discussion regarding Senator Obama's acknowledged addiction to nicotine. Smoking continues to represent the single greatest preventable cause of life-threatening diseases, including cancer (lung, oral cavity, larynx, pancreas), cardiovascular disease (coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, stroke), and chronic lung disease (emphysema, bronchitis). (It should also be noted, in the spirit of fairness, that Mr. McCain is an acknowledged former smoker).

Similarly, while aspersions are being cast, from all sides, regarding the alleged displays of erratic judgment by John McCain, why is so little made of the enormous disparity between Senator Obama's vaunted intellect and political judgment, on the one hand, and his smoking habit, on the other hand? After all, tobacco dependency is extremely uncommon among people at the upper ends of the educational stratum.

Nicotine stimulates the same reward systems in the brain that other addictive drugs (including cocaine) stimulate. In the face of all that is known regarding the adverse health effects of smoking, including a significantly increased risk of developing both the #1 and #2 causes of premature death in the United States, it is striking to me that Senator Obama's long history of tobacco dependency has not merited even a fraction of the press coverage as has been lavished upon Senator McCain's health issues and purported judgment issues.

HEALTH ISSUES? DUBYA BUSH OFTEN LOOKED A BIT OUT OF SHAPE. BILL CLINTON ALWAYS LOOKED LIKE HE WAS DYING OF AIDS. BUSH SR. ALWAYS LOOKED FRAIL. REAGAN LOOKED HEALTHY BUT WAS TREATED FOR BASAL CELL CARCINOMA. CARTER LOOKED LIKE THE IDIOT HE IS. FORD WAS VISIBLY UNCOORDINATED AND STUMBLED AROUND. NIXON'S ONLY FORM OF EXERCISE WAS FOUL LANGUAGE. LYNDON JOHNSON HAD A HEART CONDITION. JFK SMOKED TOO MANY CIGARS AND POSSIBLY HAD VD. EISENHOWER HAD A SERIOUS HEART CONDITION. TRUMAN WAS NOT THE PICTURE OF HEALTH. FDR WAS A BASKET-CASE. HOOVER WAS AN ALOOF MAN WHO WOULDN'T HAVE TOLD ANYONE IF HE WERE HEALTHY OR NOT. ###AND ON IT GOES. WE TAKE A CHANCE WHENEVER WE ELECT ANYONE TO ANYTHING. AND WHY WORRY ABOUT IT IN THE FIRST PLACE? THANKS TO THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE AND 'DELEGATES', YOUR VOTE MEANS LESS THAN NOTHING. PRESIDENTS ARE SELECTED, NOT ELECTED.

I just want to confirm here what so many of us already know for the benefit of those clueless McCain supporters. You guys won't be able to steal the election like you did back in 2000. Pull any stupid stunt Republicans, there will be an uproar like you never seen before because decent people just had enough. The times have changed. We just want a fair result with no meddling by the Repub thugs and that can only be an Obama win. Fair and square! Any other result will bring people out onto the street in billions.

JBRACALE I don't know why you are shouting with all those caps but you need not worry Obama's birth certificate has been viewed by factcheck.org http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html and is real. and thanks to info42 for bringing up that relevant point of Obama saying Job's and meaning it in the singular sense. Can you believe the nerve of the media for not spending time on that? These are all very relevant issues that I hope Senator Obama will address when he becomes President Obama. McCains health is fading fast and Palin makes my blood pressure go up so for the health of senator McCain and the health of the public Obama Biden 08'

I am a medical health professional with 30 years of experience in the field of health information management. I am also an extremely healthy woman. My last hospitalization was 12 years ago for spontaneous delivery of a healthy baby. That chart alone was over 200 pages. I doubt that 1200 pages comprises a hint that "something's not right" about Joe Biden's health.

If your complete record from a physician's office is 2 pages, you may have had excellent medical care, but it certainly has received terrible documentation. I hope you received a summary, not the complete chart.

Am I the only one to think that having a medical record of 1200 pages is in itself a sign that something is not right?

Of course I am only 35 so not a complete and honest comparison to 72-year old McCain, but when I switched GP's after moving from one city to the other, I got my files with me and it consisted of 2 pages. One with my history of diseases and complaints and one with all the medications and vacinations I used from the moment of my birth.

That someone like Obama, who seems in great health, not overweight, able to keep up the intense campaign, has a medical record that fits on one page seems not that strange to me.

Funny, the Compost posts this meaningless story about Biden but chooses not to report his idiotic gaffe about how Obama's not prepared to be commander-in-chief, just like they chose not to report how he thinks "jobs" is a three-letter word.

Can I have a "T"! An "A"! An "N"! A "K"!

So if Barack Obama should die, Joe Biden may soon die of an aneurysm if the stress gets to high doing presidential decision making. Then Nancy Pelosi would be president of the United States. How immensely scare for all of us. You know those who have highly stressed lives are more than likely to get a stroke, or an aneurysm or even a heart attack.

Since we really don't know about Barack Obama, maybe it is truly possible that Joe Biden will be the President. There is no assurance that Obama is healthy, for all we know he may have Syphilis, or Aids, or maybe he may die from excessive stress with an aneurysm or even a stroke. Remember he rarely has given indication that he can make a executive decision. His own voting record shows voting present, not yes or no - 94 times - that's not the record of a decision maker.

But then who can tell if Obama if physically fit, there is no report to meet public scrutiny.

In other VP news, Governor Palin has been increasingly accessible to the national media (and SNL). By contrast, Biden hasn’t held a press conference in more than a month, and Obama hasn’t taken questions from his full traveling press corps since the end of September.

In the past two days alone, Palin has answered questions from her national press corps on three separate occasions. On Saturday, she held another plane availability, and on Sunday, she offered an impromptu press conference on the tarmac upon landing in Colorado Springs. A few minutes later, she answered even more questions from reporters during an off-the-record stop at a local ice cream shop.

I'm more concerned about McCain's cancer returning and leaving us all with Palin as President!

When was the last time McCain had a check-up?

Posted by: SueMVetforObama | October 20, 2008 7:12 PM | Report abuse

mwhoke, no definitive test for diagnosing Alzheimer's currently exists. There's some promising research in that regard. But until then, a (post-death) brain biopsy is it.

McCain allowed the press to review 1200 pages of medical records this summer.

Obama issued a one page summary from a doctor that saw him a year prior, this from an individual who still smokes, his mother died of cancer at a young age and whose father died at an even younger age.

Every time Joe Biden speaks he provides fodder for the media and the late night comics, but they decline to use them because he is a Democrat.

I hope Biden's doctor checked him for Alzhiemer's Syndrome because with the number of gaffe's that emit from his mouth I wonder if he is losing it?

Neither Obama nor Biden have released their full medical records. What are you talking about? No one had a problem when Lieberman refused to release HIS medical records to the public:

Candidates should not procede to Election Day unless they have submitted full transparency on both their health status and their tax returns for prior 10 years.

If McCain insists on witholding his full records from proper scrutiny, with questions answered, then we have to assume he's hiding something and he must be made to produce them. Same goes for Palin. She seems to think she is governed by different rules than everyone else, but she isn't. This is not playschool.

Also, the three male candidates have provided 10 years of tax returns, Palin has only provided 2...and I'm not sure if they were actual returns or an outline. The election is two weeks away, she has to provide them in time for voters to review before they cast a ballot in her favor.

Who has the power over her, to make her comply?

Posted by: TruthFairy | October 20, 2008 5:12 PM | Report abuse

DrainYou, trained medical professionals can review records very quickly. Are you upset about Biden's records not being released to the public too?

Posted by: MarkInAustin | October 20, 2008 4:34 PM | Report abuse

This is troubling, but Palin's refusal to even discuss her health let alone release full records) is scarier considering her running mate's health background.

McCain has not yet released his medical records to the public. McCain is 72 years old, and has been diagnosed with invasive melanoma. In May of this year, a small group of "selected" reporters were allowed to review 1,173 pages of McCain's medical records and were allowed only three hours to do so. John McCain's health is an issue of profound importance.
