Obama Leads Among the Young and the Landline-less

Barack Obama is up 12 points over John McCain among white voters under 30, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll. That is a reversal from 2004, when John F. Kerry lost these voters by 10 points.

The senator from Illinois is also exceeding Kerry's take by large margins among first-time voters (20 points better), moderates and African Americans (nine points each).

Another closely-watched group this year, particularly for the poll-obsessed, are those voters who have abandoned traditional phone service for mobile phones. Obama leads by better than 2 to 1 among these voters.

In 2004, 7 percent of voters indicated that they were "cell-only," according to the network exit poll; they went for Kerry over George W. Bush by 54 to 45 percent. Now, when these voters are poised to make up an even larger share of the electorate, 67 percent back Obama, 32 percent support McCain. (These data do not indicate any bias in polls without cell phone samples; but more on that as we continue the track.)

I am not surprised by the young people voting for Obama. History has shown that those are the people easiest to convert through image and speeches. It is only when they get older that they start to look beyond the speeches and physical characteristics to see what is really going on. Obama's talk of change seems exciting and new. It is only when you scratch the surface that you see the same old played out socialist ideas that have failed in the past buried beneath the rhetoric.

Obama predicted two years ago the central message of this election. He was right - and people are paying attention. ...........

ACLU Says NorthCom’s Army Fighting Unit May Be Illegal

By Matthew Rothschild, October 21, 2008
The American Civil Liberties Union is raising questions about why the Pentagon has assigned a fighting unit to the United States itself.

On October 1, the Northern Command (NorthCom), for the first time ever, got its own dedicated Army force.

And not just any force. The unit the Pentagon assigned to NorthCom is the 3rd Infantry, First Brigade Combat Team, which has spent three of the last five years in Iraq. One of its specialties is counterinsurgency.

“This is a radical departure from separation of civilian law enforcement and military authority and could, quite possibly, represent a violation of law,” said Mike German, ACLU national security policy counsel. “Our Founding Fathers understood the threat that a standing army could pose to American liberty.”

German also noted that Congress has “passed statutory protections to ensure that the Army could not be turned against the American people,” he said in the ACLU’s press release.

“The erosion of these protections should concern every American,” German said.

The ACLU is seeking documents from the Justice Department, the Pentagon, and Homeland Security that “authorize the deployment of military troops for domestic purposes.”
