ANCHORAGE -- Supporters and opponents of the Alaska governor are bracing for what they anticipate will be a defining moment in the career of Sarah Palin, the woman they have watched emerge seemingly instantly as a national political figure.
At the Bear Tooth Theater Grill, a dinner theater here that is broadcasting tonight's vice presidential debate on a movie screen, the crowd spilled into the parking lot. With more than 400 tickets sold, anxious political enthusiasts from both parties agreed on one thing -- Palin's career likely won't be the same after tonight.
"I'll be really surprised if she doesn't knock everybody's socks off," said Jane Little, 63, a Democrat who is rooting for Palin. Little says she'll cross party lines for only the second time in her life to cast a vote for her governor (she says she voted for Gerald Ford, too).
Aaron Christ, 39, who works for the state department of fish and game, said he expects Palin to come out swinging. "She's going to try to nail him. That's what she does in debates," Christ said.
Not that he wants her to land anything. He's a supporter of Democrat Barack Obama who believes Palin has damaged her career by joining Sen. John McCain's ticket. "She had support from the left," he said. "But not anymore. It's eroded away."
They serve beer by the pitcher at the Bear Tooth, so it could get rowdy before the 90 minutes is done.
