In Ohio Swing, McCain Again Hails 'Joe the Plumber'

By Michael Abramowitz
WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Barack Obama may have Colin Powell in his corner, but John McCain still has Joe the Plumber.

As he barnstorms the Buckeye State today, McCain is hailing Joe Wurzelbacher, the 34- year-old tradesman from Holland who has become famous since McCain repeatedly pointed to him in the debate last Wednesday as an example of the kind of small businessman who McCain alleges would be harmed by Obama's tax policies.

Joe is not a licensed plumber or small business owner and there's considerable evidence that his taxes would not go up under Obama's tax plan. Nonetheless, at a rally in this small Ohio town near Columbus, McCain credited Wurzelbacher for helping smoke out Obama's intention to "spread the wealth around," as the senator from Illinois told Wurzelbacher he would do in a conversation last week.

"The real winner this week was one of Ohio's own -- Joe the Plumber," McCain proclaimed, as he greeted a boisterous crowd of several thousand people packing the gymnasium of Otterbein College here. "He's the only person who could get a real answer out of Senator Obama ... Congratulations, Joe, you did what nobody else has been able to do. That's an impressive achievement."

Wurzelbacher is providing fuel for McCain's campaign as he crisscrosses Ohio, a crucial swing state that went for George Bush in 2004 and where polls suggest McCain and Obama are running neck and neck. The campaign, however, says that Wurzelbacher is in New York and is not expected to appear with McCain at his appearance later today in Toledo, near his home town of Holland.

Obama's comments suggested that he believes in "redistributing the wealth" rather than policies that "grow the economy," McCain told the crowd in Westerville.

McCain also assessed the state of the race, saying, "we have 16 days to go, we're six points down" and "Senator Obama is measuring the drapes" at the White House.

"They forgot to let you decide," he said. "I love being the underdog, my friends. We've got 'em just where we want 'em."

When it comes down to it Obama is actually trying to answer the questions while McCain, or his hate monger Palin are just pulling a smear tactic campaign. Also, as far as keeping socialism out of government it's too late for that. Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid have a strong socialist flavor. Maybe it's time we actually have someone of high caliber in office instead of continuing to wallow in mediocrity. By the way, most violent criminals have the middle name Wayne not Hussein.

McCain's wife was an addict and a silver-spooner - never worked a day in her life and never helped anyone till her husband thought it would look good if she went to Africa.

Obamas wife is self-made,a lawyer,mom

The core of the American dream is already destroyed - by Geroge W. Bush and his Republican doctrine of pre-emptive military strikes, de-regulating business and thinking God "told him" to do something as president of the US.

You may prefer ex-coke/booze swilling ultra-right wing presidents who think they have a hot line to the creator, but the evidence is IT DOESN'T WORK to have a mental midget with daddy problems running our country. Now that the CORE of the US is near mortally wounded by Republicanism and Christian jihadists - you want to put another BOZO in office who supported W. 90% of the time and picked another REAL BOZO to be his running mate.

I would take a clear-headed, heart driven socialist anyday of the week compared to you angry conservatives who seem to only care that the rich get richer and the poor suffer even more. God help you all.

THIS MAN IS A WHINER. MOST SMALL BUSINESSES WON'T BE AFFECTED. THIS MAN IS WORRIED THAT HE MAY HAVE TO PAY AN EXTRA 15-20 OR 25K." -GATOR RON

***************
Obama Takes A HATCHET To Small Business

If you work for a small business, its profits -should Obama be elected- will be taxed at near 60% once it breaks Obama’s magic 250K, Because-

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY OBAMA WANTS TO REMOVE THE SOCIAL SECURITY PAYROLL CAP CREATING A 15.65% ADDITIONAL TAX ABOVE THE 3% ADDED INCOME TAX at this level, since LLC’s and Subchapter S small business profits pass through to the owner’s personal 1040!

If you’re the owner, you’re going to be tempted to do more with less and lay someone off-

If you’re an employee- you may, because of this new penalty on progress, be laid off.

John McCain wants to reduce business taxes and grow the economy, rather than squeeze the last drop of juice out of every successful business, large, medium, and small!
Exxon made billions, but why use a HATCHET to treat small and medium sized businesses the SAME WAY Sen.Obama?

“From each according to this ability, to each according to his need”
K.Marx 1875
B.Obama 2008

Someone Please point out how Marx's comment is different from what Obama said to Joe the Plumber in OHIO???????????????

GatorRon- Are YOU quoting Phil Graham with that brilliant "Whiner" remark? It's a LOT more than 25K, but even it were- that's one salaried position in some businesses....multiplied by millions of small businesses and many more positions per large business.

Hey ReptileGuy, can you say 12% unemployment? (I knew you could).

Posted by: thecannula | October 20, 2008 8:50 AM | Report abuse

My God, you people are naive! Everything Obama has said and demonstrated is right out of the text of Karl Marx. He is not only the most liberal politician in Washington, he is downright socialist. Joe Wurzelbacher is 100% correct, Obama's plan will affect the core of "the American Dream". Why should anyone strive to attain it if they can just vote and get it handed to them on a silver platter and never have to get their lazy butts off the couch? This is truly indicative of the ethical decline of this country.

Yeah you got all the answers except these:

1 year ago when Bush's economy was only 4 trillion in debt we were riding a bubble of fast money from dishonest mortgage brokers and greed driven speculation. That bubble burst not becasue the Democrats controlled the House but because there was no executive oversight, no presidential intelligence to forsee the problem brewing years ago.

Obama was born in America, McCain was born in Panama - which by some stretch has become native soil.

McCain and Palin both censured by senate for bad judgement. Cindy McCain arrested for forging prescriptions for pain killers.

Obama and Michelle - lilly white in comparison and about triple the combined IQ's of their opponents.,

It would start with funky music, and then cut to
McCain saying “I screwed up!” “I screwed up!”

The refrain would be something like “bomb...bomb...boommmbb..Iran...Iran...IIIIRRRaaann...you betcha...you betcha...
(all the while with a message scrolling across the screen, asking “what if McCain were president during the Cuban missile crisis?”, as the screen flashes between McCain and Kennedy, rapidly, repeatedly, and then the same way between a
pretty urban landscape and a nuclear wasteland ...finally fading with McCain saying
“what can I say? What can I say? I screwed up! I
screwed up” Palin merges in “you betcha! You betcha!”, fading out together.

twinharbor, learn something about the economy. 2001-2006 were not "fine" economically. Waging two wars, growing a government to its biggest size ever, and giving everyone tax cuts simultaneously is really bad for the economy. It makes for huge crippling deficits. Consolidating wealth into the hands of the few will also cut consumption and increase personal debt, which over time will damage the economy. This is what John McCain said in 2001 when he voted against the Bush tax cuts, saying they would hurt the middle class at the benefit of the wealthy. He was right then.

And, FYI: the Democrats do not have a majority in the Senate and do not hold the White House. Even at that, they've only held the majority in the House since January 2007.

This is a complicated economic situation. It took much longer than 18 months for it to build up.

TO ALL MY FRIENDS…
LIBERAL OR CONSERVATIVE…
FYI only.

George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years. The first six the economy was fine.
A little over one year ago:
1) Consumer confidence stood at
a 2 1/2 year high
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon
3) The unemployment rate was 4.5%
4) The DOW JONES hit a record high– 14,000 +
5) American’s were buying new cars, taking
Cruises, vacations overseas, living large!

But American’s wanted ‘CHANGE’! So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress and yes–we got ‘CHANGE’ all right. In the PAST YEAR:
1) Consumer confidence has plummeted
2) Gasoline is now over $4 a gallon
And climbing!
3) Unemployment is up to 5.5%
(a 10% increase)
4) Americans have seen their home equity
Drop by $12 TRILLION DOLLARS
And prices are still dropping
5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure
6) as I write, THE DOW is probing another
Low ~~ $2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS
EVAPORATED FROM THEIR STOCKS,
BONDS & MUTUAL FUNDS
INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS!

YES, IN 2006 AMERICA VOTED FOR CHANGE…AND WE SURE GOT IT!

REMEMBER THE PRESIDENT HAS NO CONTROL OVER ANY OF THESE ISSUES, ONLY CONGRESS DOES.

AND WHAT HAS CONGRESS DONE IN THE LAST TWO YEARS?
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

NOW THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT CLAIMS HE IS GOING TO REALLY GIVE US CHANGE, AND HE HAS THE BACKING OF A DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS!!!!

JUST HOW MUCH MORE ‘CHANGE’ DO YOU THINK YOU CAN STAND?
NOT HAPPY DEM. IN NC

McCain is the first presidential nominee to have been censured by the US Senate (Keating 5). Palin is the first VP nominee to have been censured by her own state's Senate (Troopergate). What a great pair. The republican base is so stupid, they'd elect Bush to a third term if they could. Joe the Plumber the regular guy who lies openly to the public about his name, occupation and finances and who owes $12,000 in back taxes is honored as an icon by McCain/Palin while Obama, proposing to help the disadvantaged and the middle class by reigning in corporate taxcuts is a socialist terrorist.
Yeah right. Tell me about socialism when you can't afford your medical insurance anymore and your kids can't afford to go to school and you've lost your retirement to unregulated financial/mortgage institutions. yeah who's gonna help you then - Joe the Plumber??

The Wilder effect is probably real, the Bradley effect is unproven. The situation was more complicated than those who dubbed that took into consideration. Whether the behavior of people today will be the same as in the past remains to be seen. Against Clinton there were states where Obama outperformed and where he underperformed the polls.

We'll just have to wait to see whether the American people will vote against there financial interest and elect McCain and his misfit. Obama has faith that the American people will vote for
good government and not be confused by lies from the McCain campaign. Will see who knows the American people better, you or Obama.

With respect to Ohio I disagree that McCain is in the lead but that is today and not on election day.

Is McCain leading in MO, VA, CO, NM, FL and NV as well?

I'll be really glad when we no longer have to hear about this angry loser. If Samuel Sixpack paid a bit more attention to civics he might not be in such a pathetic state of confusion over the candidates' tax plans, nor would he persist in believing that Social Security is "socialism." I for one am getting tired of reading stories about all of these people in Red State America who are so angry. What are they all so angry about? They're the ones who foisted Bush and Cheney upon the rest of us, aren't they? The got what they wanted, didn't they? They just don't like the accountability and would prefer to blame others for the problems they created by their crappy political choices. Maybe it's time that the real Joes begin thinking about their genuine economic interests, and not all of these cultural wedge issue chimeras that always seemed to get them worked up into such a lather.

The Christian ethic has become recently "do unto others before they do unto you" aka the Bush Doctrine and the McCain campaign. Seems the gospel as it is now understood gives absolute license to the religious right-wing Republicans to slander, lie and degrade the infidel liberals for their own power. Never mind the meek or the peacelovers anymore - the Christian gospel is now the rhetoric of Joe the Plumber, Sarah Barracuda, and the lynch mob crowds at McCain's rallys. Lying has truly become the new virtue of the Republican party.

There are more Senate Republicans convicted of crimes than liberals by a long margin - and the ultimate crime of invading a country that had not attacked us is Republican. Republican deregulation of banks has led to the biggest mass criminal financial fiasco in history. And by the way Reagan appointed the board at which the terrorist Ayers now sits.

I see some comments suggesting that because many of America's poorest people vote for Democrats, and they stay poor, that it must be due to their continued support for Democrats. Most Republican voters are also poor. THe sad fact is that the number of poor in this country has grown dramatically over the past 3 decades. Statistics show that when Democrats are in power (at the national level where they can actually do something) the deficits shrink and the economy grows faster. In addition when Democrats are in power the inequity in wealth between rich and poor decreases. Under Republican administrations and Congress, deficits grow, economic growth decreases and the disparity in wealth increases.

The reason our economy is in such bad shape can be statistically tied to the fact that the Republicans have been in power for a higher percentage of the time in the past 4 decades. The fact is that each party redistributes wealth one way or another. Each tax policy favors someone. The Republican tax policies distribute more wealth to the rich, the Democratic policies distribute more wealth to the poor. The Republicans claim that moving more money to the rich is better for the economy, but there is ample data to indicate that is not true.

Governments inherently interfer with the natural order of things. A good government provides for the safety and security for the largest possible number of it's citizens. There is no question that severely centralized socialist governments have had problems with their economies, but it is equally true that letting private interests control the economy has also proven disasterous. We need to decide what kind of lifestyle we want and then methodically do what it takes to get there, rather than worry about what the name of that economy is.

The republicans believed in welfare-- corporate welfare. It's ok that big business gets free money and corporate welfare while they trickle on everyone else. The republican claim that someone earning $249,999.00 a year is poor is absurd, let those people try to raise a family earning $15,000.00 a year and you will know where I am at.

One of the subtle signs of a brain that has gotten old and crustaceous (dementia, for those unwilling to make the bottom feeder analogy of crustaceousness) is that the afflicted person often drops words in mid sentence or confuses one word for a similar sounding word that can have a totally new and often times unintended meaning. Senator McCain’s new found obsession with Joe the Plumber is, I think a perfect example of this. Not sure you follow my argument?? Let me explain.

McCain is a veteran. He comes from a long line of people who have dedicated their lives to the armed services of this country. There is no doubt about this. In other words, if anyone knows how to soldier on, it is John McCain. However it would appear that the constant angry pacing under the bright lights of the faux town hall setting of the second Presidential debate has done a number to his fading cognitive processes. In his mind he has decided to solder on rather than soldier on. Perhaps this word association was brought on by the description of Mr. Obama being of tempered alloy. Perhaps it was because his entire Presidential race has been in a flux. A simple enough mistake made by dropping just one vowel, but this plethora of soldering terms such as alloy and flux has affected John McCain in terrible ways. Determined to find the Master Solderer, he has left no septic tank unagitated in his hunt for Joe the Plumber. And having found him he is determined to use him almost as a toilet plunger in trying to unblock Mr. Obama’s strangle hold on economic issues, never mind the fact that it leaves the poor undecided electorate, how shall we say, drained.

Mr. McCain has always whined about the celebrity status that Mr. Obama has achieved. Secretly he would like the voting public (and perhaps even the few illegals who don’t vote) to root for his campaign. He would like his audience to become Mister Rooters. And that again, sadly, brings up a plumbing analogy, only reinforcing the need to keep Joe the Plumber front and center in his campaign. What are we to do or say?? Not much, except to shrug and say “Whatever yanks Mr. McCain’s chain” Or cistern for that matter.

But a word of caution to Mr. McCain in carrying on with this “Relevance by association” support for plumbers. His choice of Sarah Palin as Vice President has done not much more that excite the crowd who are looking for a Caribou Barbie who looks like a babe rather than someone who has any capacity to govern. Should Mr. McCain continue with his plumbing analogy in his own mind and in the days to come, one shudders to think of the possible analogies, should he now start talking about laying pipe.

The Wurzelbacher story is McCain's fantasy tale. He's not a licensed plumber in Ohio, according to state records, but his boss, is. Ohio law requires a plumber get a local license. Furthermore Wurzelberger's estimated that the business makes between $250,000 and $280,000 a year to make his tall tale more interesting. Well, media investigators found that the business' estimated total annual revenue was about $100,000. Even if its income reached above $250,000, Obama's higher rate would only apply to net income above that level. To top it all off, Wurzelberger said he has no clear plans to buy the company anytime soon. McCain spins the tall tales of Joe the Plumber to hide the truth. McCain wants to make permanent the Bush tax cuts for the very wealthy 1% of the nation and give $4 Billion in tax cuts to Big Oil. McCain wants to spread the wealth from the the poor and middle class to the rich through failed Trickle Down economics and the "good socialsim" of bailing out failing banks with taxpayer dollars.

thecannula and his other wingnuts sling their codeword "socialism" around like any other epithet, without any substantive discussion of Obama v McCain economic policies. Pick up last issue of FORTUNE magazine and you will see that they spell both plans out and conclude Obama wins. For simpleton thecannula I will give you this analogy from my 10 year old son. He told me he heard that Warren Buffet would lose money by taking the time to pick up a 100 dollar bill. Most of us middle class folks feel the same way if we see a penny in the parking lot. Here is the point: to provide fair tax relief to all socioeconomic groups, doesn't a $100 of tax relief to Warren Buffet equate to the same tax relief my 10 year old son would feel with a penny of tax relief. In short, progressive taxation has nothing to do with socialism which is where governments control the means of production. I am a homebuilder in Colorado, love the free market system and deplore what has happened to it through the mismagment of our fiscal system. I am sick and tired of ignoramouses like you calling me a socialist because I am voting for Obama. Grow up and grow a brain!!

LaurainLA,

We "redistributed" the wealth to the upper 1% of the population. That kind of class warfare has to end. We have to stop socialism for the corporations and only capitalism for the middleclass. Stop privatizing profit and socializing risk.

Reaganomics: trickle down economics just makes us all peons.

Bring the jobs back. Support the middle class. Don't let corporate piranha ship the profits to island banks. Make them pay their share. Stop corporate socialism now!

The republican claim that "redistributing the wealth" is socialism is undermined by the Tax Foundation Report (March 2006 No.139)which shows that blue states are generally federal tax donors to red states. Alaska is #2 in receiving 1.83 times as many federal dollars as it contributes via taxes. Sarah Pallin would be the first to scream "unfair" if Alaska was no longer subsidised by voters like myself in California and New York. Do the republicans really want to open this issue? rprockpile

Just to set the record straight: It was I, not Barack Obama, who poisoned the writer Jerry Corsi. I caught him in a very compromising position with pro36, and I'm not into sharing. It had nothing to do with Kenya at all. Jerry broke my heart. God, just thinking of it makes me shake with anger.

its absolutely hilarious how many driven left-wing nutjobs are furiously blogging in to show their wild contempt for mccain-palin--their ideological extremism is pure schadenfreude for me. In fact, the more in their roadrunner-like haste they whack in their zany ripostes to the latest "plumber joe" stories (with all their bad spellings & contorted syntaxes), the more I tend to fall off my chair in wild outbursts of laughter. Rush is right--I'm having more fun enjoying their angst in what is clearly shaping up to be a Mccain blow-out over "Messiah" Obama than any American human has a right to. So, lib-rads of the left, please continue to send in your pathetically ill-informed rants over the latest Mccain-palin speechifying on the campaign trail. McCain could not pronounce Ahmadinejad in the second debate, despite Iran being one of the biggest diplomatic challenges next president will face.

Yet he can repeatedly pronounce "Wurzelbacher", name of a guy irrelevant to challenges facing the US.

Maybe he is relevant. Wurzelbacher is the last name of Charles Keating's grandchildren. Even after the S&L scandal, McCain and his wife still co-invest with him, still pal around with financial charlatans.

Subject: Missionaries in Kenya Knows Obama's Family

Thought you'd find this interesting. Celeste and Loren Davis are Missionaries in Africa and can shed some firsthand light on one of our Presidential candidates.

Thanks for sending out an alert about Obama. We are living and working in Kenya for almost twelve years now and know his family (tribe) well. They are the ones who were behind the recent Presidential election chaos here. Thousands of people have been displaced by election violence (over 350,000) and I don't know the last count of the dead. Obama, under 'friends of Obama' gave almost a million dollars to the opposition campaign who just happened to be his cousin, Raila Odinga, who is a socialist trained in east Germany. He has been trying to bring Kenya down for years and the last president threw him in prison for trying to subvert this country! December 27th elections brought cries from ODM (Odinga Camp) of rigged election. Obama and Raila speak daily. As we watch Obama rise in the US we are sure that whatever happens, he will use the same tactic, crying rigged election if he doesn 't win, and possibly cause a race war in America.

What we would like you to know is what the American press has been keeping a dirty little secret. Obama IS a Muslim and he IS a racist and this is a fullfilllment of the 9-11 threat that was just the beginning. Jihad is the only true Muslim way. We have been working with them for 20 years this July! He is not an American as we know it. Please encourage your friends and associates not to be taken in by those that are promoting him. It is world wide jihad. All our friends in Europe are very disturbed by the Muslim infiltration into their countries.

By the way, his true name is Barak Hussein Muhammed Obama. Won't that sound sweet to our enemies as they swear him in on the Koran!?

God Bless you.

Pray for us here in Kenya. We are still fighting for our nation to withstand the same kind of assault that every nation, including America, is fighting. Takeover from the outside to fit the new world order. As believers, this means we will be the first targets. Here in Kenya, not one mosque was burned down, but hundreds of churches were burned down, some with people in them, burned alive.

Jesus Christ is our peace, but the new world order of Globalism has infiltrated the church and confused believers into thinking that they can compromise and survive. It won't be so. I will send you a newsletter we sent out in February documenting in a more cohesive manner what I've tried to say in a few paragraphs.

Love, Celeste

If you work for a small business, its profits -should Obama be elected- will be taxed at near 60% once it breaks Obama's magic 250K, Because-

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY OBAMA WANTS TO REMOVE THE SOCIAL SECURITY PAYROLL CAP CREATING A 15.65% ADDITIONAL TAX ABOVE THE 3% ADDED INCOME TAX at this level, since LLC's and Subchapter S small business profits pass through to the owner's personal 1040!

If you're the owner, you're going to be tempted to do more with less and lay someone off-

If you're an employee- you may, because of this new penalty on progress, be laid off.

John McCain wants to reduce business taxes and grow the economy, rather than squeeze the last drop of juice out of every successful business, large, medium, and small!
Exxon made billions, but why use a HATCHET to treat small and medium sized businesses the SAME WAY Sen.Obama?

Second, I don't get what McCain's point is with Joe the Plumber. He's using this guy to stick the "liberal tax-and-spend" label on Obama. Too little, too late. It's the same misguided strategy we've seen before from McCain. Joe the Plumber is William Ayer redux. Stupid and disrespectful of the intelligence of the electorate. First, Joe The Plumber AINT a plumber, and secondly, he's NOT a tradesman, not having ever served an apprenticeship, or passing a licensing exam. When he told Senator Obama that he wanted to buy the business, he failed to say that it might be ten years down the road, and that he hadn't even paid his back taxes.
Yeah, I want to hit the multi-state lotto, but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it to happen, nor am I going to act as if it's imminent as Joe did with the plumbing business.
Joe Wurzelbacher should have been honest about his circumstances in the first place, instead of lipping off about his misleading wanna be circumstances. My guess is that he couldn't confront Obama in the same way, had he been truthful, because the Senator could have said, "well, hey then- You ought to be in OUR camp then, because you'd get a tax break under my plan, as opposed to Senator McCain's!!" Could it be, that Joe SHOULD have known that when you have more than a three second conversation with a presidential candidate, YOU are going to become a 'news event', and that every bit of your life available to the public WILL be scrutinized?!

There are more Senate Republicans convicted of crimes than liberals by a long margin - and the ultimate crime of invading a country that had not attacked us is Republican. There are a number of questions that the present economic climate not the least of which is the role of banking in the demise of wealth. On the face of it the banks get money from the feds for say 2% and then sell it on to the homeowner at 6%

Given that the feds issue a limited amount of money (say $1000) how can you repay $1060?

Oh duh the answer is easy lets just print some more.

My guess, Loudermilk, why the types that are most likely to suffer (pay more for pickup truck gas, pay more for healthcare, etc.) keep voting Republican is not that they are not bad people, just EASILY DUPED by the Rove types. They need to feel that they are being "patriotic" by voting GOP. These poor, honest folks are not all seat-of-the-John Birch Society types, but they are made to buy into the flag waving and talk of how patriotic and antiterrorist they are being by voting GOP. That is why stuff like terrorist color coded fear mongering was ratcheted up before the last elections, Bush was able to turn his unprecedented lack of support into total popularity after 9/11, etc. We have all been (attempted to) made to feel somehow "unpatriotic" for being Democratic. THIS is what people term the ROVIAN POLITICS OF CYNICISM.

Well, no more. Now people are starting to realize that TRUE PATRIOTS see the economic collapse of the US, being marginalized by the world community, spread too thin militarily overseas, taking the US citizens stomach for military action (no matter how justified) away, putting DOPE's like Palin 2nd in command as all THREATS TO OUR NATIONAL SECURITY -- not to mention the notion that our children can prosper in the US...

THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY SHOULD NOW RESUME THE MANTLE OF PATRIOTISM (ignoramuses like Joe not withstanding as "ya can't win 'em all)

Best Regards

Watch the video. What Obama said is that if hard working Americans are given the tax breaks, instead of rich corporations, they will be in a position to pay for a plumber, and that will help to grow Joe's business-thus 'spreading the wealth'. His discussion with Joe was respectful, earnest, and smart. I've never seen a presidential candidate take that much time to clearly and compassionately discuss with a single citizen that he himself knew would not even vote for him. McCain is dragging at straws, and once again lying about what Obama said. Look at the video yourself on youtube:

I hate to tell you this but we already have wealth redistribution going on right now and have done so for many years under republican leadership.
If we just leave aside the present fiscal problems how about the farm bill that distributes taxpayer dollars in the form of subsidies to farmers who are paid not to grow food. How about a dairy acquaintance of of mine that gets $250k a year from the feds as a subsidies. His wife and kids get money too, and he gets price support on his milk.

How about the oil companies, insurance companies, pharmaceuticals not withstanding military cost plus contracts.

I guess this couldn't be socialism could it because it is going upward to the corporations and rich and after all socialism only applies if it goes downward to the little guy

hey salty -
Show me where Obama said "what Plumber makes 250,000 a year anyway" or made plumber butt crack jokes. Obama is always respectful, unlike Palin or McCain. This guy Sam or Joe the unlicensed plumber has been exploited around the issues of taxes. The fact is, he would a tax break under Obama's plan, but nothing from McCain.

Posted by: jake14 | October 19, 2008 5:00 PM | Report abuse

Colin Powell is real, Joe the Plumber is a construction of a false ideal. The real people who are in Joe's position in the world don't hold the values of the McCain campaign or the republicans for that matter. They want to have health, education, and financial stability for themselves and their family - not tax cuts for the wealthy. They want to be valued as the ones who hold this country up. They know that it is they, not the top paid CEO's 80:1 ratio to the common employee, who deserve to reap the benefits of their hard work. That is the difference. Do the executives and managers need the break, or do you, Joe?

The message has been twisted, I hope that you will all be able to see for yourself who is the true underdog here. Think of it, giving Joe the tax break is called welfare while giving tax breaks and major subsidies (as well as $700 billion bailouts) can't be called what it is ... the true WELFARE! Think about what using that type of money could do for the real "Joe" (again, not the one who was propped up and used as a farse - further evidence that McCain, like Bush, will not be able to admit to making a mistake and moving on from it ... instead he'll drag it out until it is painfully obvious that he should have abandoned his failed tactic long ago ...) jobs could be created for all those workers in repairing our failed infrastructure, our bridges, water and sewer systems, our eduction systems, our healthcare system - creating real jobs for real people ... then they wouldn't need to borrow so damn much if they were just paid according to their work! Also, just because you are registered to vote and legit, doesn't mean your vote will count on Nov. 4, check out canivote.org and clear up any discrepancies before it is too late. Whose idea of "love of country" includes stealing our votes?

It's sad that the McCain campaign has exploited this "Joe the Plumber" guy for what they think will help McCain gain the presidency. McCain should have known better. As a politician, McCain HAD to have known that the media would research this guy. The thing that has me puzzled is why this guy faked his true identity in the first place. Surely he knows his annual salary, whether or not he has a license and if he's really in the process of buying a business. Maybe he wanted to be able to say he met or spoke directly with Barack Obama and/or shook his hand. Who knows. I guess he didn't think anything would become of it. Now, his personal business (as well as some of his employer's personal business) is on Front Street. Here, a TRUE innocent party has been dragged into this LIE! This is an example of why it pays to tell the truth from the beginning. All of this could have been avoided if Joe had not LIED. Now the Democratic Party (instead of the Republican Party) is being blamed for Joe's humiliation. But we all know, including Joe, that there IS a price to pay for fame and Lies!

Joe stands for all working Americans with a dream. You hear Obama saying "what Plumber makes 250,000 a year anyway". Joe wanted to someday own a business and asked a due diligence question. Plumbing companines all over this country, free of Union dictatorship, make an honest living of well over that amount. Electricians and their small companies do as well. Ever had a electrician or a plumber come to your home lately. Boat haulers in our area make well over that. Joe is just an example of small, often mom and pop business, with a stella reputation seeing the fruits of their labor with no help from the government in their success. Now, Obama and like thingers, want to suppress small business. After all Obama was able to attend the college of his choice thanks to the US Government. How would he know how much it costs to do any form of manual labor. After all he even got a BIG break on his lot for his home from connections in Chicagoland. Seems Rev. Wright now enjoys a multi million dollar home in the Western suburbs as well. Again tax free employment is hard to get, but after the gifts from all the hard working American taxpayers, Obama’s cronies preach how the Government is evil. G’D’ America! “I wish I had done more”..following 9/11!! Often you judge the integrity of a person by the friends they keep close.

Now, the plumber butt crack jokes are pretty beneath the Presidential hopeful, I would think, when making more fun of the working folk. Plumbers and all trades are a joke to the elitist "educated" folk who are jealous that they come no where near the prosperity of many hard working Americans even with their Harvard type educations, which in Obama's case was a gift to him from taxpayers of all trades across this country. He should be supporting them and not making fun of them.

Joe stands for what is right about America, like Mom and Apple Pie. Oh Obama couldn't get pumpkin or sweet potato (dumb request in that region) so settled begrudgingly on cream pie. Oh..So hard is life for Obama. Anyone ever go interview the Diner guy who served Obama and companion their cream pie?

Hope they left a BIG tip! You get that will ya, Joe? Thanks, buddy!

It is painful to be a Republican knowing MCain and Palin has lost this election.
It is painful to know we the Republicans have lost to Intelligence, something which is so foreign to us. But firmly we will march and chant WE ARE THE FLYING MONKEY RED NECK DYSFUNCTIONAL TALKING HEADS REPUBLICAN PARTY AND WE WILL NEVER GIVE UP OUR STATUS. NEVER YOU BETCHA!

So we know that this plumber really isn't a plumber, really only makes about 40,000 per year, really cannot afford to purchase the business in which he works, really doesn't work for a boss that wants to sell his business that doesn't net $250k per year, really is a joke.

Yet McCain keeps going.

The sad thing is that all of the people cheering for the Joe the Plumber lines are folks that don't make $250k per year and will receive more under Obama's plan--less under McCain. These same, poor souls are the ones that put Bush in office and the ones that have suffered the most under this administrations policies that have made the rich even richer while the sheep get poorer.

Wake up, poor people.

Hey love234american.

I know it is tough my fellow Republican.
It is painful to see McCain fall like Humpty Dumpty and have Sarah Palin put him back together again. But it doesn't matter how many times McCain is put together again, its over John, Obama and Biden have it all wrapped up and are on their way to the White House.

Hey McCain! No one cares about Joe the unlicensed dirt poor Republican plumber that owes back taxes and whose boss doesn't even clear $250,000.00 a year let alone Joe himself. Joe the plumber will never make $250,000.00 a year or in his lifetime and will in reality get a tax check and refund when Obama is President. No one cares about Bill Ayers either who sat on the same board of directors annointed by Ronald Reagan, a board that also included several prominent REPUBLICANS. You see John, Most Americans know how many houses they own, or USED to own and are concerned about their credit, jobs, food money and heating bill. Most Americans aren't gifted millions of dollars in hand outs like you and your buddy Bush who you voted with 90% of the time, in your own words. Go away McCain, you are the last thing America needs right now, 4 more years of Bush greed and failure? NO THANK YOU MCCAIN.

Why would somebody like Joe even think about voting for McCain?

In 6/2005 Joe bought his $123k house with less than 10% down carrying a balance of $113,850.

In 8/2008 he did a cash out refinance on his house for about $12-13k to bring the balance of his loan to above the value of his house:

He now owes about $127k on a house that the tax assessor values at $117k and Zillow, which is notorious for over valuing properties, values at $122.5k...

Now folks, in a dropping market, why would somebody like Joe be so fiscally irresponsible as to cash his house out at above value 2 mos ago?

If Joe thinks that a McCain admin is going to help somebody like himself, he is either a skin head or should have his head plumbed.

Joe is Obtuse....If he listened to the merits of Obama's plan he would've been able to draw from those elements that he would pay less in taxes as an indidual and for his small business under Obama if you count the small business tax credits in Obama's plan.

One must deduce that Joe is misconstruing Obama's plan in his mind or just doesn't believe Obama will do what he says he will by instituting such a plan.

If he doesn't take Obama on his word that's one thing but if Joe is just misconstruing the plan after hearing it...That's just plain
Joe being Dumb

How sad that "Joe the Plumber" has become some sort of economic poster child. Joe the Plumber is no longer doing work on new construction and many of his customers no longer have jobs.

Our economy is to diverse to pick out 1 person or profession to be a representative. How about Mary and Jack who are working hard to put their daughter through college and the prospects of her getting a job when she graduates are dimming.

How about Mary and Jack are looking at future health care costs that will be more expensive , have seen their retirement savings go away and know well that social security. How about Mary and Jacks nephew who served in the war and is now seriously injured but is still better of than their neighbors soon who gave his life.

Don't talk to me about Joe the plumber, tell me what you are going to do to make this country better.

Apparently that is a bridge too far and I am just being fed public relation lines and fear and smear phone calls.

How sad the democrats try to discredit a WORKING AMERICAN, the backbone of this country.
I find Joe Biden's comments on the late show a disgrace commenting that he doesn't know a plumber who makes $250,000 a year and cutting on the fact that this man doens't have a plumbers license and behind on taxes. He doesn't need a license...he can work under the owners license. Before Biden made his comments to discredit this AMERICAN WORKER, he should have had his facts straight.
If Joe Biden and the Democrats truly cared for this AMERICAN worker there would have been some compassion for his situation, like McCain has shown. Many people are behind on their taxes with this economy, this doesn't make him a dishonest person.
Joe...I am from Toledo, OH and when I need a plumber I will be calling Newell's plumbing.
OBAMA/BIDEN..You want the AMERICAN WORKERS vote...But you have no respect for the AMERICAN WORKER!!

Top Ten Poorest Cities
Redistribute the Wealth? Has that EVER worked Mr. Obama??
Check this: Obama drew 100,000 for his rally yesterday in St. Louis, No. 6 on list. NBA star, Charles Barkley, said black folks have been voting Democratic for 50 years, and they're still poor. QUESTION: Where would modern liberalism be without victims to patronize?

Subject: Top 10 Poverty Cities

Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961;

Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1954;

Cincinnati, OH (3rd)..hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1984;

Cleveland, OH (4th)..hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1989;

Miami, FL (5th) has never had a Republican mayor;

St. Louis, MO (6th)..hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1949;

Einstein once said, 'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.'

It is the disadvantaged who habitually elect Democrats --- yet are still disadvantaged.

Opinion: The Disadvantaged remain disadvantaged because they are looking for a Liberal Democratic Government to give them something, when all they have to do is work for it.

The Wurzelbacher story is McCain's fantasy tale. He's not a licensed plumber in Ohio, according to state recorsds, but his boss, is. Ohio law requires a plumber get a local license. Furhtermore Wurzelberger's estimated that the business makes between $250,000 and $280,000 a year to make his tall tale more interesting. Well, media investigators found that the business' estimated total annual revenue was about $100,000. Even if its income reached above $250,000, Obama's higher rate would only apply to net income above that level. . To top it all off, Wurzelberger said he has no clear plans to buy the company anytime soon. McCain spent precious debate time spinning the tall tales of Joe the Plumber to hide the truth. McCain wants to make permanent the Bush tax cuts for the very wealthy 1% of the nation and give $4 Billion in tax cuts to Big Oil.
