Keating Inquiry Appears Different, 17 Years Later

Updated 2:56 p.m.
By Michael D. Shear
Sometimes in politics, memories fail.

In a conference call with reporters, attorney John Dowd was asked about a specific part of the Keating Five inquiry, the fact that Cindy McCain and her father had invested in a Keating strip mall.

"It was part of the inquiry, but it did not -- John was unconnected to that and unaware of it at the time, and did not participate in it," Dowd said.

But thanks to the quick research skills of Democratic partisans, here's John McCain's answer to an attorney who asked him about that very investment during the ethics committee hearings in 1991.

"Sometime in 1986, I was told by Mr. Delgado, who was Executive Vice President of my father-in-law's company, that they were going to invest in a shopping center and that the investment -- the project -- was being put together by a subsidiary of American Continental," McCain said. "He later told me that they -- that that had happened. And I had no interest in it and just noted in passing that this investment took place."

The attorney asking the question during the hearing? John Dowd.

Is McCain really THIS STUPID? Maybe the old fool and his gang of imbeciles running his campaign should be handed a memo explaining how the internet and Google work.

McCain and Palin are an absolute disgrace to the American political system. They make George Bush and Dick Cheney look competent.

You forgot to mention McSame's gambling addiction and his longtime association with Indian Tribal casinos which he is scrambling to distance himself from.

This just gets worse for him.

If the election was held today it would be an electoral college LANDSLIDE VICTORY for Obama. Thems the facts.

Go to voteforamerica(dot)net and see for yourself. Obama is nearly 200 votes ahead of McCain.

ACCEPTING CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS FROM ASSOCIATES OF KNOWN TERRORISTS?

The Ayers-Weber-McCain connection. Truth? Guilt by Association? We report. YOU Decide!

Arnold R. "Arnie" Weber is a Chicago Annenberg Board Member and Chicago "insider". He was a part of the Nixon White House. Arnie Weber has held other Washington "insider" jobs too. He is a LONGTIME REPUBLICAN DONOR. But get this: Arnie Weber was a BOARD MEMBER of the infamous **CHICAGO ANNNENBERG CHALLENGE** organization, which was founded by known "TERRORIST" Bill Ayers!

Sarah Palin was using "guilt by association". This, however, is a two way street but Gov. Palin may not understand this.

NEW INFORMATION SHOWS THAT JOHN MCCAIN HAS ACCEPTED "TAINTED" CAMPAIGN MONEY FROM ARNIE WEBER, AN ASSOCIATE OF BILL AYERS.

Arnie Weber has given the maximum legal amount of $1,500 to the McCain campaign in 2008. He probably would have given more if allowed by law. In 2008, Arnie Weber made two separate donations of $1,000 and $500 to McCain’s presidential campaign run by EX-LOBBYIST AND WASHINGTON INSIDER RICK DAVIS.

I demand that Senator McCain denounce this man, Arnie Weber, and his associations to "terrorists" (as defined by his vice-presidential running mate, Sarah Palin). I call on Senator McCain to reject these tainted donations. John McCain should then investigate how such a thing could possibly happen inside HIS OWN CAMPAIGN before seeking to cast stones at Senator Obama. McCain's campaign CEO, RICK DAVIS, needs to explain to the AMERICAN VOTERS his reasons for accepting this dirty money. Are they really that desperate to win this election? Doesn't John McCain still believe in the honor that he felt when defending this country against the enemy in Vietnam where he served as a prisoner of war for years? Doesn't Senator McCain, a Christian, understand that he must remove the log from his own eye before trying to remove the splinter from the eye of his opponent? (Matthew 7:5)

THE "LIBERAL MEDIA" SHOULD ASK JOHN MCCAIN WHY HE ACCEPTED THIS TAINTED CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THIS "TERRORIST" ASSOCIATE. Incredible as it may sound, Arnie Weber doesn't even DENY that he ASSOCIATED FOR YEARS with a "KNOWN TERRORIST".

However... This is probably just because he hasn't been asked about it...

Now for the reality check, folks: It turns out that these types of "facts" are simply BASELESS SMEAR ATTACKS WITH NO MERIT! Yes. It is true. Attacks like this are meant to distract the uninformed voters near the end of an election. We don't hear about them very often because most candidates have too much integrity to run them. They know that winning an election based on lies is unacceptable. Besides, people want to talk about REAL issues affecting REAL lives, not play a game of "6 degrees of Kevin Bacon".

Random associations are EASY to find. For instance, it turns out that you can trace Obama's FAMILY TREE to both George W. Bush (10th cousins once removed) and Dick Cheney (eighth cousins). Yep! They are legally RELATIVES. This is yet another useless "fact" for Trivial Pursuit lovers, but it is not worthy of any media time in this national election for the greatest country on God's green earth.

If you want some more guilt by association, here is something to find out for yourself. Who said this? Who supports this guy and his political party? "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government. And I won't be buried under their damn flag."

Guilt by association is an attack on voters and on the electoral process. Voters need to learn about the issues. Governor Palin should apologize for raising this STUPID guilt by association tactic against Senator Obama. And if she REALLY believes what she is saying, she REALLY should demand that they return "Arnie" Weber's campaign donations. Seriously. To do anything short of that would be blatant hypocrisy.

"Sooner or later, people are going to figure out if all you run is negative attack ads you don't have much of a vision for the future or you're not ready to articulate it." [John McCain - The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer - 2/21/2000]

America would do well in 2008 to listen to the words of this man from eight years ago.

The market is in the tank with Dow Jones industrials plunged as much as 800 points and set a new record for a one-day point drop and all the major indexes fell more than 7.5 percent. The benchmark index that gauges fear in the market jumped to the highest level in its 18-year history. Last month, 159,000 Americans jobs were lost. I could not sleep the whole weekend after opening my 401K statements with a quarter of retirement account vanish. And McCain wants to talk about gimmick “character” shenanigans. Where the FCUK does this idiot live at? McCain is beyond out-of-touch. More than any other time, we need a stable, smart and rational person at the helm of our economy. John McCain and his stupid running-mate, Sarah “Airhead” Palin can’t provide the required leadership.

No amount of “character” attack is going to persuade any reasonable person from the Economy. It’s all about the ECONOMY. And every time McCain says something stupid, the market is adversely reacting to it.

We are at a crossroad and the decision we make on November 4th will determine if America remains the World leader or to begin the slow but sure decline that the Great Britain has been on in the last century.

The campaign run by lobbyists lies?

Who would have guessed.

And has anyone seen Sarah Palin? Is she going to be allowed to speak again to a non-rally crowd before Nov. 4?

Please, McCain campaign, don't take away our fun!

I guess when your choices are to talk to the public about the ethical swamp that was McCain's Keating Five, or letting Sarah Palin near an interview, McCain opts for the Keating Five.

The press should boycott Palin. She is setting a dangerous precedent:

Press kept under a watchful eye
CLEARWATER -- Constantly under the watchful eyes of security, the media wasn't permitted to wander around inside Coachman Park to talk to Sarah Palin supporters. When reporters tried to leave the designated press area and head toward the bleachers where the crowd was seated, an escort would dart out of nowhere and confront him or her and say, "Can I help you?'' and turn the person around.
When one reporter asked an escort, who would not give her name, why the press wasn't allowed to mingle, she said that in the past, negative things had been written. The campaign wanted to avoid that possibility Monday.

pastor123, so what? The ticket is McCain/Palin and that'll be written in history books as the losing ticket of 2008. I know , reality is a b*tch.

Rightwingers are doing everything they can to swap out McCain. If you go to McCain's site, it's as if Palin was running. And on top of that, Palin is a joke.

My friends, this is a sign of a dying party.

McCain's camp is imploding!

The DOW drops below 10,000. International markets are feeling the economic hurt. IRAs, Pension funds and 401Ks are dropping in value week-by-week and McCain and Palin are talking about Ayers and Wright!

Obama is pulling ahead in polling the swing states. Expect Obama to poll at 50 to 55% nationally in the next few days after the debate.

The Ayers Question [Yuval Levin]

Very soon after she was picked to be McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin was attacked by Obama campaign spokesmen and a Democratic member of Congress for once being seen wearing a Pat Buchanan button. She had an answer and the campaign offered it. Yet now we are asked to believe that it’s somehow inappropriate to inquire why Barack Obama’s political career began in the home of an admitted and unrepentant domestic terrorist of the radical left? “Who is Barack Obama?” is not an irrelevant question given the job Obama is seeking, and it’s a question he has sought mightily to avoid answering. The veil of secrecy he has thrown over his past (journalists have been denied access to his state legislative office records, documents about state earmarks he distributed in Illinois, a list of his legal clients, his state bar application, billing records related to Tony Rezko, medical records, academic records — all of which are the sort of documents candidates routinely make public) forces the question all the more.

The Obama campaign’s response to the question appears to be to raise John McCain’s connection to the Keating Five scandal. It is by no means out of bounds to raise the issue. McCain received campaign funds from Keating, his wife’s company had been involved in investment ventures with him, and he once met with federal regulators about Keating’s bank — though the Senate Ethics Committee found that unlike three other senators involved in the scandal, “Senator McCain’s actions were not improper.” The committee said only that he had exercised bad judgment by being involved with Keating at all and not seeing what others were doing. In fact, Bob Bennett, who was the Democratic lawyer selected by the committee to investigate the Keating Five, says in his book that he recommended that McCain’s name be dropped from the investigation because there was no evidence against him but, for political reasons (the other Senators were all Democrats), McCain’s name was left on the list.

McCain’s response to that scandal should certainly be compared with Obama’s Ayers explanations. McCain has spoken and written about every detail of the Keating mess, has expressed open contrition for allowing himself to be drawn into it even tangentially, and devoted years of his career to combating corruption as a result. He even badly overreacted and pushed for vastly excessive regulation of campaign financing. He has said (in a book in which he details his and others’ actions in the matter) that merely the appearance of impropriety involved makes his involvement with Keating “the worst mistake of my life.”

Had Obama done and said something similar regarding the sort of radicalism Ayers represents, he would now have an answer to offer. Instead, he has worked with Ayers, supported his causes, and denied any significance to the links between them. That, too, makes this a legitimate question about a man who would be president.

Hmmm. IIRC, Dowd is the same high-flying lawyer the McCains brought in to smear Tom Gosinski, the whistleblower who was about to expose Cindy Hensley McCain's narcotics addiction, which she fed by stealing drugs from her own charity.

Dowd threatened Gosinski--a former employee of said charity who'd been fired after documenting Cindy's forged prescriptions and other antics--with an extortion counter-suit (Gosinski having filed suit for wrongful termination).

Together with John McCain, then a member of the Arizona congressional delegation, he successfully worked to shield Cindy from the kind of draconian punishment her husband advocated for other, less fortunate drug offenders.

He then helped orchestrate a sympathetic, televised confessional for Cindy to preempt the news cycle when the McCains learned that the facts of the case were about to become public.

Ironically, it was Dowd's counter-suit against Gosinski that prompted this release, I believe. Now he's at it again, making news with baldly revisionist accounts of the Keating scandal.

I'm not sure McCain needs help flying the Straight Talk Express into the side of a mountain, but Dowd does seem intent on co-piloting the mission.

Thank you for the reality check. Do we need someone who understands the economy better than his opponent. I think so. That candidate should have a plan to find new ways to stimulate the economy and help the economy where it is hurting most in the middle class and with those on the edge of or in poverty.

If you are still not sure that it is Barach Obama who understands this economy best, try reading:

By going negative....again, McCain has proved to America that he has lost on the issues (economy, healthcare, Iraq/Afganistan etc) and all he's got left to offer Americans between now and Nov 4th are his and Caribou Barbies lies and distortions.

Judgement:
Barack Obama chose as his running mate Joe Biden. John McCain chose as his running mate Sarah Pailin. John McCain's campaign is erratically bouncing from one crisis to the next. Barack Obama's organization is running with precision, effectiveness that has never before been seen in a Presidential campaign. In contrast McCain's organization (excuse the oxymoron) has been a slow motion train wreck. "High drama" would be the best way to describe McCain's out of control campaign.
Obama is cool in a crisis. McCain has a hair trigger temper and he makes seat of the pant's decisions (Palin).

Honesty:
Barack Obama is probably the most transparent politician to arrive on the scene in the last 200 years. He has written two best selling biographies. Note here: Obama wrote his books himself. McCain used a ghost writer. Obama has already survived the scrutiny of a protracted primary campaign against one of the most powerful political organizations ever. John McCain hides his medical records, his wife's tax returns and continually distorts his voting record.
.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEtZlR3zp4c
.

Personal Ties:

There are no personal ties that Obama has that have not been scrutinized and responded to (thank you Hillary!) Most of them are foolish anyway. McCain's personal ties are still a ticking time bomb. Phil Graham and the architects of this mess of an economy we find ourselves in. They are McCain's "personal ties" not Obama's.
.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioy90nF2anI
.

But more than all that, going NEGATIVE will no longer work. America has seen the "leaders" brought to us by Atwater and Rove and their NEGATIVE campaigns and they are are SICK of it. America is HUNGRY for positive leaders and see that possibility with Barack Obama. All the Mud and Smears that McCain and his cronies are going to throw at Obama will in the old schoolyard saying ... Bounce off Obama and take McCain down.

McCain might want to take a good hard look in the mirror before he brings up: Judgement, Honesty and Personal Ties.
