McCain Campaign Calls for Investigation of ACORN-Obama Ties

By Michael D. Shear
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Sen. John McCain on Friday accused his rival of being connected to a group it said was conducting voter fraud, calling for federal investigations and media inquiries into the progressive group ACORN and its ties to Sen. Barack Obama.

In a conference call with reporters, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said he is worried the election is being "stolen" in several battleground states where irregularities have been discovered in voter registrations collected by ACORN, the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now .

"We don't think the election is something that should be stolen from the American electorate," Davis said, calling on Obama to join him in calling for the inquiries.

"ACORN is an organization that has violated the law on a repeated basis," Davis said. "Barack Obama has given $832,000 within the last year to an organization that is a front group for ACORN."

The campaign put its accusations into a 90-second Web ad titled "ACORN," in which an announcer declares Obama "a man with a political baptism performed at warp speed" who has "vast ambition."

The ad accuses ACORN of "bullying banks, intimidation tactics" and "disruption of business." It says ACORN stands accused of "massive voter fraud" and says that "Obama's ties to ACORN run long and deep. He taught classes for ACORN. They even endorsed him for President."

Obama-Biden spokesman Tommy Vietor dismissed the charges.

"Today's conference call was another effort by the McCain campaign to throw out false charges to 'turn the page' from the issues that matter to American families. Barack Obama strongly condemns voter registration fraud or any other breach of election law by any party or group," Vietor said. "The McCain campaign's allegations about Sen. Obama are completely transparent and false. He believes that the registration of voters at record levels is good for our democracy, and the McCain-Palin campaign's false claims are nothing more than another dishonorable, shameful attempt to divert voters' attention from the unprecedented challenges facing their families and our nation."

The voter registration group has come under increased scrutiny since its offices in Nevada were raided Tuesday morning.

Agents with the Nevada Secretary of State and Attorney General's office raided their Clark County headquarters, alleging that ACORN had hired felons to collect signatures and had submitted about 300 apparently fraudulent registration cards.

In the conference call, Davis questioned why the media has not examined more closely the relationship between ACORN and Obama's campaign.

He alleged that Obama's campaign had paid $832,000 to a group called Citizens Services, Inc., which Davis labeled "a front organization" for ACORN. He accused Obama's campaign of initially trying to hide its payments to the group by labeling the payment "events services" in their disclosure forms.

"There was an effort to hide the fact" that the money went to ACORN, Davis alleged.

"I think we've clearly established that what Barack Obama says about his relationship with ACORN over 20 years of activity, and even most recently ... is somehow different than what he's trying to lead the public to believe."

It is very rich for McCain to try to accuse Obama of any involvement in voter fraud. Voter fraud or voter intimidation as the case maybe, is what the Republican party as a whole, is doing so well. Just ask the brother of the current President how he stole the election in 2000 in his state for his big brother. This is more like a prostitute wanting to lecture a teenage girl of the virtue of modesty. Laughable.

John McCain's own ACORN connection
ACORN seems unhappy in its new role as a villain, cast by John McCain's campaign and others on the right as being part of a constellation of shadowy leftists behind Barack Obama’s throne.

Maybe the McCain camp's call for an investigation of ties between the group and the Obama campaign was the last straw, because on Monday ACORN started reminding people that as recently as March 2006 McCain himself appeared at an event the group sponsored. At the time, the Republican nominee was still campaigning for the immigration reform deal that nearly killed his presidential hopes.

Michelle Malkin -- who is, unsurprisingly, angry about the connection -- has a press release promoting the event, while Politico's Ben Smith has a photo of McCain smiling at a room full of ACORN volunteers (visible, Smith says, in other pictures), with a statement by the group’s chief organizer:

It has deeply saddened us to see Senator McCain abandon his historic support for ACORN and our efforts to support the goals of low-income Americans.

We are sure that the extremists he is trying to get into a froth will be even more excited to learn that John McCain stood shoulder to shoulder with ACORN, at an ACORN co-sponsored event, to promote immigration reform.

Lastly let's get it straight...Phil Gramm's deregulation commodities modernization act creating a new use for Credit default swaps led us right into the credit crisis
Loosely regulated subprime lenders and investment firms that bundled loans into private-label mortgage-backed securities -- not Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac or banks subject to the Community Reinvestment Act -- were the main drivers of the housing boom and bust.

"a conservative campaign that blames the global financial crisis on a government push to make housing more affordable to lower-class Americans." There were plenty of JUMBO loans to may fiscally shaky non minorities

In 2005 and 2006, private-label lenders securitized almost two-thirds of all U.S. mortgages, the story noted, surpassing Fannie and Freddie for the first time. In 2006, more than 84 percent of subprime mortgages were made by private-label lenders, the story said, citing Federal Reserve data.

During the boom, Fannie and Freddie employed tighter underwriting standards than many private-label lenders, many of whom have since gone out of business. According to a study by researchers at UC Irvine, accounting and management scandals forced the government-sponsored entities, or GSEs, to cut back on purchases and guarantees of mortgages beginning in 2003, clearing the way for dramatic growth in securitizations by "aggresive" private-label lenders.

Any claim that ACORN has defrauded elections is false in that no election has yet been held. Registration fraud and voter fraud are not the same thing. Just because somebody registers as "Mickey Mouse" doesn't mean that “Mickey Mouse” is allowed to cast a ballot on Election Day. In fact, it is nearly impossible for this type of fraud to occur in the states you have cited as possibly being rife with voter registration fraud; these states require official photo identification and a number of other crosschecking methods in order for a registered voter to cast a ballot. Somebody would have to wear a disguise and obtain a false state identification that matches the information on the registration roll in order to commit voter fraud. Voter fraud in a federal election will get somebody five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. All of this makes voter fraud not worth the hassle for one vote and impossible on a large enough scale that would affect an election.

Experts who study election fraud have shown that this type of fraud is extremely rare and that where any fraud might occur, it is so minute that it has no affect on outcomes. Indiana could not show one single case of voter fraud in its recent Supreme Court case on Indiana's law requiring a photo ID at the polls. A report by the League of Women Voters in Ohio found that of about 9 million votes cast in the state from 2002-2004, there were four fraudulent ballots.

While it may be true that ACORN has submitted many fraudulent voter registration APPLICATIONS, this does not also mean that ACORN fraudulently submitted the registration forms. ACORN has a strict policy of removing suspicious registration applications, and they discipline or prosecute anyone in their organization suspected of defrauding ACORN in this way. Most important, your article glaringly omits the fact that many states require ALL registration applications to be turned in to the election offices, which means ACORN cannot remove questionable applications prior to turning them in to officials in those states. This is true in the states that you have cited, which means ACORN was not allowed to remove questionable applications.

Interestingly, Republicans have taken ACORN to court many times during past election cycles making the same claims of fraud, but no cases have been won against ACORN.

I also would like to see reportage on Republicans' hard work at successfully purging thousands of legal voters from registration rolls in several key battleground states during the 2004 and current election cycles. Preventing voters from voting is a much bigger problem than the type of voter fraud you wrongly attribute to ACORN.

Both CNN and Fox News investigators have determined that Obama and ACORN are directly responsible for the mortgage crisis and resulting global economic crisis.

I don't see anyone here arguing that any Republican cases of voter fraud shouldn't be investigated. In fact Sproul and Associates, as far as I can tell from a quick review, hasn't registered any voters in 2008. There were concerns, however, in 2004 that the group wouldn't register Democrats or had torn up registration forms for Democrats.

The disappointing response of Democrats on this site seems to be either, "but Republicans do it too" or "do you want more of Bush's policies?". Neither response is very mature. Again, we are talking about between 1.2 and 1.5 million potential voters registered by ACORN, or over 1% of the likely vote. Shouldn't both Republicans and Democrats be concerned about this group and its fraudulent practices?

We should absolutely investigate ALL voter fraud. In addition to ACORN I would like to see more information on John McCain's relationship with Sproul & Associates. Republicans should be familiar with Sprouls. See Acorn has a good teacher. Sprouls and Associates has been investigated numerous times for voter registration fraud. Tactics included bullying, changing the locations of voting precints at the last minute, shredding Democratic voter registrations obtained in registration drives. You know, exactly what ACORN is accused of but these guys operate for Republicans.

The election needs to be postponed until these fraudulent voter registration issues are ajudicated. If Obama wins a fraudulent election, it will be up to the Supreme Court to overturn the results, and award it to the real winner, McCain.

Accusing ACORN of voter fraud is frivoous campaign rhetoric. Of course some overzealous staffers "stuffed the ballot box" and will certainly do it again when it is votes, not registrations.

It follows a hallowed American political tradition that says if have enough skill and coordination to steal an election, you deserved it anyway. From Joseph Kennedy not wanting to buy extra votes to Richard Daley the first visiting headstones in a graveyard for names. The only guy who ever got caught was Nixon and he was only accused of possibly obtaining information that might possibly influence votes. If he had just short-cutted that ignorance and made up names, he would have retired an honored man.

When you are talking about the Obama campaign that is registering felons in prison and Network media shilling for the candidate, a few thousand paltry votes are just not worth the trouble to steal or to complain about stealing.

But the McCain campaign will keep on with the "William Ayers" and the ACORN thing while the Obama guys hold their breath that John won't expose the real plan for drastic social change that will really tank the economy. And McCain will lose to a skilled and corrupt campaign as surely as Nixon did to the votes that Joseph Kennedy bought for his son.

Oh, and get used to ACORN -- Under Obama, their $100 million budget will swell to billions and they will probably sell shares.

Bertha Lewis and Steve Kest note that "Our canvassers are paid by the hour, not by the card, so there is NO incentive for them to falsify cards." However, they fail to note that this hasn't always been the case. In fact ACORN originally got into legal trouble because they WERE paying employees on a per card basis.

As for quality control, they note, "ACORN has implemented the most sophisticated quality-control system in the voter engagement field, but in almost every state we are required to turn in ALL completed applications, even the ones we know to be problematic." However, as already noted, "A breakdown in quality control allowed a pile of suspected fraudulent voter registration applications to find its way into the hands of Lake County election officials, said an official for the organization that collected the applications. Charles Jackson, national spokesman for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), said the group rigorously inspects applications its canvassers collect on voter registration drives across the country. In Indiana, Jackson said a pile of applications which had been tagged as suspicious accidentally got delivered to Lake County elections officials along with a pile of "clean applications."

The ACORN representatives then go on to say, "No charges have ever been brought against ACORN itself. Convictions against individual former ACORN workers have been accomplished with our full cooperation, using the evidence obtained through our quality control and verification processes." By firing ACORN employees who commit fraud, they can claim they have no current members convicted of fraud. We know that ACORN did not find the embezzlement of $1 million by the founder's brother to be worthy of reporting. Perhaps now ACORN can clarify how many other former members have been convicted?

ACORN in the comments below praise their quality control practices. However, in Indiana, that quality control system seems to have failed. How can one claim that you have quality control, and then note that the voter registration documents which appeared to be fraudulent were then submitted as legitimate (at least in the case of Indiana)?

ACORN claims to have registered 1.3 million new voters, or a little more than 1% of all those expected to vote in 2008 (122 million voted in 2004). Given that ACORN is likely to have such a big influence on this election, isn't it reasonable to investigate this government-funded organization, without the defensiveness of this being part of the vast-right wing conspiracy?

"Charles Jackson, national spokesman for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), said the group rigorously inspects applications its canvassers collect on voter registration drives across the country.

Obama's always guilty and McCain's always innocent. It's just amazing how McCain connects Obama to every imaginary scandal in town. Never a shred of evidence, but what the hell. As long as the headlines get the message across we'll hide the truth in the fine print. We should just splice together pictures of McCain bouncing little boys up and down on his knee in the park and post them on the net. We'll use that picture with his famous sideways smile that makes him look really perverted. I think McCain's antics will motivate people that never intended on voting to vote for Obama. After that ad McCain put out that said Obama wanted to teach sex Ed. to Kindergarten Children people stopped listening to everything he says. These morons running his campaign actually think this stuff is going to work again. You think they would've noticed that people have had enough by the 13 point lead Obama has in Pennsylvania.

The Truth About ACORN's Voter Registration Drive
By Bertha Lewis and Steve Kest
Flickr: Creative Commons by Mike Licht, NotionsCapital.com

Election Day is less than a month away, and our efforts to make sure that low-income and minority voters have a voice and vote on November 4th are in full swing. Unfortunately, just as we've seen in previous election cycles, the more success we have in empowering these voters, the more attacks we have to fend off from partisan forces making unfounded accusations to disparage our work and help maintain the status quo of an unbalanced electorate. We want to take this opportunity to separate the facts of our successes from the falsehoods of our attackers.

On Monday, October 6, as voter registration deadlines passed in most states, ACORN completed the largest, most successful nonpartisan voter registration drive in history. In partnership with the nonpartisan organization Project Vote, we helped register over 1.3 million low-income, minority, and young voters in a total of 21 states. Highlights of this success include:

We collected over 151,000 registrations in Florida, 153,000 in Pennsylvania, 215,000 in Michigan, and nearly 250,000 in Ohio.

An estimated 60-70 percent of our applicants are people of color.

At least HALF of all are registrations are from young people between 18-29.

We are proud of this unprecedented success, and grateful to everyone who supported us in this massive effort, from our funders and partners to the literally thousands of hardworking individuals across the country who dedicated themselves to the cause and conducted the difficult work of registering 1.3 million Americans, one voter at a time.

And this work is far from over: now begins our effort mobilize these new voters around local and national issues, getting them to the polls and helping to channel their commitment and conviction into an ongoing movement for change in our communities.

As The Nation pointed out recently, ACORN's success in registering millions of low-income and minority voters has made it "something of a right-wing bogeyman." Though ACORN believes that the right to vote is not, and should never be, a partisan issue, attacks from groups threatened by our historic success continue to come, motivated by partisan politics and often perpetuated by the media without full investigation of the facts. As a result, there have been a few recent stories about investigations of former ACORN workers for turning in incomplete, erroneous, or fraudulent voter registration applications. Predictably, partisan forces have tried to use these isolated incidents to incite fear of the "bogeyman" of "widespread voter fraud." But we want to take this opportunity to set the record straight and tell you a few facts to show how these incidents really exemplify everything that ACORN is doing right:

Fact: ACORN has implemented the most sophisticated quality-control system in the voter engagement field, but in almost every state we are required to turn in ALL completed applications, even the ones we know to be problematic.

Fact: ACORN flags incomplete, problem, or suspicious cards when we turn them in, but these warnings are often ignored by election officials. Often these same officials then come back weeks or months later and accuse us of deliberately turning in phony cards.

Fact: Our canvassers are paid by the hour, not by the card, so there is NO incentive for them to falsify cards. ACORN has a zero-tolerance policy for deliberately falsifying registrations, and in the relatively rare cases where our internal quality controls have identified this happening we have fired the workers involved and turned them in to election officials and law-enforcement.

Fact: No charges have ever been brought against ACORN itself. Convictions against individual former ACORN workers have been accomplished with our full cooperation, using the evidence obtained through our quality control and verification processes.

Fact: Voter fraud by individuals is extremely rare, and incredibly difficult. There has never been a single proven case of anyone, anywhere, casting an illegal vote as a result of a phony voter registration. Even if someone wanted to influence the election this way, it would not work.

Fact: Most election officials have recognized ACORN's good work and praised our quality control systems. Even in the cities where election officials have complained about ACORN, the applications in question represent less than 1% of the thousands and thousands of registrations ACORN has collected.

Fact: Our accusers not only fail to provide any evidence, they fail to suggest a motive: there is virtually no chance anyone would be able to vote fraudulently, so there is no reason to deliberately submit phony registrations. ACORN is committed to ensuring that the greatest possible numbers of people are registered and allowed to vote, so there is also NO incentive to "disrupt the system" with phony cards.

Fact: Similar accusations were made, and attacks launched, against ACORN and other voter registration organizations in 2004 and 2006. These attacks were not only groundless, they have since been exposed as part of the U.S. Attorneygate scandal and revealed to be part of a systematic partisan agenda of voter suppression.

These are the facts, and the truth is that a relatively small group of political operatives are trying to orchestrate hysteria about "voter fraud" and manufacture public outrage that they can use to further suppress the votes of millions of low-income and minority Americans.

These tactics are nothing new, and history has shown that they will come to nothing. We'll continue to weather the storm, as we've done for years, and we'll continue to share the truth about our work and express pride about our accomplishments.
Most importantly, we want to assure you that this good work continues, unabated and undeterred. ACORN will not be intimidated, we will not be provoked, and in this important moment in history we will not allow anyone to distract us from these vital efforts to empower our constituencies and our communities to speak for themselves. If the partisan political machines are afraid of low-income and minority voters, they're going to have to do a lot better than coming after ACORN.

After all, there are now at least 1.3 million more of them, and they will not be silenced. They're taking an interest, and taking a stand, and they'll be taking their concerns to the voting booth in November.

And ACORN will be here, to make sure that the voices of these Americans are heard, on Election Day and for every day to come.

Keep it all in perspective.

ANGRY GOP RALLY SHOUTERS: ARE THEY AGIT-PROP PROFESSIONAL PLANTS?

WaPo reporters should spend some time on the periphery of these rallies, in the hours before the scheduled event.

They might discern that some of the most vociferous rabble-rousers hang together in packs, don't quite look like your "average Joe," and appear to be part of an orchestrated "street theater" -- not necessarily a reflection of spontaneous crowd enthusiasm. Examine closely their attire, and the electronics they are carrying.

Could they be the "stromtroopers" in a troubling offensive?

ARE THE AGITATED 'CUDA CROWDS A HARBINGER OF THIS?

Here follows a comment on the ACORN "scandal" in Las Vegas, from this site, which was a follow-up on a previous article at the site:

http://washingtonindependent.com/11785/cnns-mis-reporting-on-acorn?disqus_reply=2986697#comment-2986697

Idiots, even if you don't have ID, you have to be registered to begin with, and in most areas you have to sign your signature and have it matched to the rolls on voting day. If you think it's so easy to vote more than once, then why don't you try it? God knows the Republicans are going to need any help they can get come November 4.

Secondly, have any of you fracks been to Las Vegas from mid-April to mid October? It's hotter than a Republican seeing the presidency slipping away. It's not right what the workers did, but I understand why they'd make up names in a cool library instead of earning their pay. What it comes down to is that ACORN has been consistently trying to be above board, informing state officials of discrepancies as soon as they find out, for over a year, yet the Republican officials essentially do nothing until now? Why would ACORN in any shape or form condone any type of fraud when it would only hurt the integrity of their organization? Please spare me your indignation over the fraud.

Keep in mind that this ACORN incident pales in comparison to the actual voter disenfranchisement that happened in Vegas back in 2004 or 2006. I don't remember the particulars, but a company with fairly extensive Republican and conservative ties would register people to vote under the impression of being a non-partisan organization, but then they would take registrations of Democrats and throw them away. These weren't made up people, but actual citizens disenfranchised for partisan power purposes.

Thirdly, most of you would want the baby thrown out with the bath water. Of course you would, because you don't believe in democratic principles of all citizens getting a vote. But I digress. What is more harmful: correcting this "wrong" by invalidating all the registrations of this organization, or disenfranchising thousands and thousands of citizens from voter rolls because a few hundred non-existent people are listed (who will non-existently "vote" come election day)? Keep in mind that people of all parties were registered by this organization--it wasn't a partisan effort. If poor people and minorites happen to lean Democrat, it is only a reflection of inequitable Republican policies.

Finally, you geniuses need to realize you're in the age of computers. It is a lot easier to commit fraud hacking the computer systems of the voting machines than trying to have some conspiracy of registering several hundred non-existent voters. It's the turn of the century, all right, but you're 100 years behind. Americans need to be more worried about practically untraceable system hacking that UC scientists have uncovered and demonstrated. Guess who has deep ties to the companies that deploy the electronic voting systems. Jesus I detest feckless fools with no sense of citizenship and fair play, only caring if their "team" wins (as if all this were just some NFL game, rah rah). You have no integrity.

So, we have Hussein getting money from Xyag QOEU at PIRUWlooiwrl.com, and now we have him paying a million bucks to a group engaged in voter fraud.

None of the above is cause for alarm to the messiah's followers. They have 'hope', they know that the messiah will come with some dandy explanation and everything will be honky dory again.

When, soon, we will hear Obama defending Osama, as he said in his book that he will defend Muslims, his followers will not have reason to worry, either. "The media is making something out of nothing", they will say.

And when the USA is attacked, again, by Osama's followers, the messiah's followers will simply blame the republicans for the attack. "They [the republicans]are racist, they hate our messiah and want to make something out of nothing."

So it's not racist to vote for someone because of the color of their skin (BHO gets 95% of the black vote).

So it's not ageist to not vote for a candidate because he is in his 70's.

So it's not sexist to not vote for a candidate because she is a woman (Hillary).

Welcome to the modern day Democratic party. Wow how far we've come.

Looks like the old man and his coo-coo running mate are trying to start a witch hunt. I thought we learned our lesson about those back in 1693. But then again, there's that video of Palin being prayed over by that pastor who actually had people trying to stone a local "witch" that they blamed on causing a bunch of car wrecks by her mere proximity to where the wrecks occurred. I guess they figure that if that guy can stoke up people into a stoning frenzy based on nothing more than the fact that a lady lived close to where a bunch of car wrecks occurred and was into fortune telling, then they should be able to do the same with Obama.

But what's good for the goose is good for the gander, of course. Therefore, I think McCain has a lot of questions to answer for things he won't own up to. He needs to explain to the American People why he is running from these things.

First, I'd like to hear from McCain why he is running from the fact that his political career was launched with mob money. I'd like McCain tel tell the American People how close he really was to the mob. I'd like to hear from McCain why thought it was ok to send mobsters birth-day wishes and why he thought it was ok to marry into a family so closely connected to the mob. I'd like to hear from McCain why he supported smuggling arms to Iran so illegal death squads could wreak havoc in Central America. I'd like to hear from McCain why he is telling people that he did not have sex with his subordinates when he was married, and in the military. I'd like for McCain to own up to everything he actually told his captors in Vietnam beyond his name, rank and serial number, and why they called him the song-bird, and why he would make propaganda films for them if he is so honorable. I'd like to know why McCain decided to spend his 70th birthday with Italian scammer/money launderer Raffaello Follieri on Follieri's yacht and why McCain was kicking back cocktails with Oleg Deripaska - a russian mobster who had his visa revoked by the U.S. authorities due to this questionable activities. I'd like McCain to tell us why he thought it was ok to shag lobbyist Vicki Iseman when he was married to Mrs. McCain. I'd also like to hear McCain's explanation for using his influence to bring about federal land deals lucrative for his friends and campaign contributors. I'd also like for him to tell us whether he thought he was doing a good job when he crashed those jets. How about why he remains friends with convicted felon and McCain campaign contributor/fundraiser Gordon Liddy.

When are we going to get answers from McCain? Why is he hiding? What else isn't he telling us?

If there is an investigation, it should include investigating the Right Wing 527 groups who sent operatives to ACORN to misrepresent themselves in order to perpetrate voter registration fraud.

Think about it.

ACORN is mostly a volunteer based group. Send in an operative to "Volunteer" for a day to help with voter registration. That volunteer is bound to be alone for some portion of the day. During the time the operative is alone he quickly fills out four or five voter forms with fake names and addresses.

Do that a few times in a month, and suddenly you have a couple of dozen false voter registration forms.

You then call law enforcement, and tell them you have anonymous reports of false filings.

These people will do anything to subvert the process. We all have witnesses that.

ACORN provides access to the democratic process, which is a direct conflict with the goals of the Right Wing 527 groups.

You don't think they'd pay alot of money to discredit and shut the doors on ACORN?

Hmmm....let's look at this. In 2000, Republicans in the state of Florida intimidated minorities, and removed many legitimate voters from the rolls. As a result, voter fraud was rife, and the Republicans were to blame. We must not forget that George Bush's brother was the GOVERNOR of Florida at the time. In addition, the Sunshine law showed that Al Gore actually DID win the state of Florida when all votes were taken into account.

In 2004, the Secretary of State of Ohio was Kenneth Blackwell, who was also serving as the honorary co-chairman of the Committee to re-elect George W. Bush, a conflict of interest that should have been dealt with before the election. In addition, Wally O'Dell, the owner of Diebold which created the computers for voting, swore to Bush he would "deliver" the state of Ohio to Bush. And moreover, at least 3 people who were part of the elections committee in the state of Ohio have been convicted of committing voter fraud for George Bush in the 2004 election.

McCain needs to wake up, smell the coffee, and shut the hell up instead of trying to accuse anyone of "voter fraud" when his own party is a master of the tactics he is accusing the Democratic Party of. Pot, stop calling the kettle black.

"....Though Chryson belongs to a fringe political party, one that advocates the secession of Alaska from the Union, and that organizes with other like-minded secessionist movements from Canada to the Deep South, he is not without peculiar influence in state politics, especially the rise of Sarah Palin.

An obscure figure outside of Alaska, Chryson has been a political fixture in the hometown of the Republican vice-presidential nominee for over a decade. During the 1990s, when Chryson directed the AIP, he and another radical right-winger, Steve Stoll, played a quiet but pivotal role in
electing Palin as mayor of Wasilla and shaping her political agenda afterward.

Both Stoll and Chryson not only contributed to Palin’s campaign financially, they played major behind-the-scenes roles in the Palin camp before, during and after her victory......"

The Republicans bring up this ACORN garbage every election year without fail, it's one of their "babies".

First of all, Obama has limited ties to ACORN and in no way condones fraudulent voter registration.

Second of all, knowing what we know about Rovian tactics of voter suppression from previous years, it is highly likely that Rebublican operatives are placed in ACORN offices throughout the country to perpetrate fraud.

Next, ALL voter Registration forms are required to be turned in, whether they are legitimate or not...ACORN doesn't really have the authority to pick and choose which ones to send in, or THAT would be fraudulent as well.

This is just another ploy by McCain to take our minds off the REAL subject of the economy. Don't fall for it. It's more Republican smear.

I do not understand how a company that has in the past been proven to file false registeration, and still receive federal monies. If their was Voter ID in every state Acorn would not have a job and receive monies for the crooked work, and the voting would be honest and above board. You need a photo ID to travel cash a check and get a paper notorized. The most important act as a US citizen had to do is vote. Voter ID must be made mandatory.

Americans. Here we go again. It is an election year and we need our press to start taking their responsibility as the four segment of our republic more seriously. There was a day when the media would not stoop to running someones political tripe up the flag pole until it was substantiated. I wonder are the reporters news man or sensationalists out to sell a paper, and ad, or web page.

And we have let them. Have you noticed that we no longer discuss how we can fix the health care system, the economy, our dependence on foreign energy, global warming and a host of other problems. Instead we have become political apologics experts. The republicans did this, the democrates are to blame for that.

If we, as Americans don't stand up to our government and the media, by means of changeing our habits of listening and interacting with each other, they will continue to sell us their wares like some two bit shyster hustling vegetable seeds that all turn out to be corn.

Let's do it. Let's orginize. One year from today, October 10,2009 lets all stay home from work, use no energy, and buy no product, watch no movie, not log on to the internet, just to let them no we are still a voice to be recound with and we have had enough.

Re: okiegal1 105% registration in Indiana.
The reason is that Indiana has lax voter registration rules. You can be registered to vote if you have lived in Indiana for only a few months. In addition, a large portion of Indiana's population are students. So the most recent census probably does not reflect the 'out of state' student population, who can under Indiana law register to vote. In any case I'm sure both Dems and Repubs are taking advantage of Indiana's voter registration laws.

Forget all the rhetoric, backstabbing, name calling and this and that. I look at the difference in the policies of each person, and see who compares to my own belief.

I don't believe in nationalzied health care because I am not too fond of someone telling me which doctor I can go to or what pharmacy to use. HMO's are a reminder of this.

I don't believe in abortion as an immediate correction to a bad choice, unless it is in the case of rape or death to the mother.

I do believe in the idea of letting parents choose the school their children attends when the school in their area is failing in the instructions of their children and their national rating is so poor. We moved to a different local town for that very reason.

I don't believe in giving all the current illegals immediate citizenship simply because they are here now. I do approve of granting citizenship to those who enter properly and go through the correct channels to obtain it. They usually know more about our history and methods than natural born citizens.

I don't believe in converting all reading materials into the spanish language when we don't do that for all of the other countries that are currently represented here. What makes one more important than others. Why do we not enforce the English language that this county uses?

I do believe in a waiting period to purchase fire arms.. as sometimes they are purchased in haste with a specific use in mind and that is not hunting for food to feed your family.

Rather than all of the ya ya ya's that I see bantered back and forth here, why don't we all just shut up, compare our viewpoints on our way of life, what we believe in for the future of our country and family and then compare those to the candidates and vote. (And by the way most of them only prove the author is only using emotions and not logic to state a case)

Having said that, my one ya ya ya that I would contribute is, if someone demonstrates his belief by being part of an organization, religious or otherwise for over 20 years; consorting with known unfavorable persons for a period of time; but change their relationship even severing it publicly after being called on it brings a question... where is the loyalty of that person? Loyalty doesn't run when it gets tough. And if that loyalty is that frail, where will it be when it really tough... will they be loyal to the American Way of Life?

You've gotta keep your eye on this ball. Investigate McCain.

This is classic Republican campaigning. Whenever you've done something illegal, heinous or otherwise unpleasant, quickly accuse your opponent of exactly that. It gets the heat off you and takes the wind out of the countercharge when it surfaces.

McCain does this repeatedly. It happened within the past week with the FEC. McCain's campaign got wind of the Federal Election Commission's investigation into the McCain campaign accepting anonymous donations, which was announced the next day. His response? Immediately accuse Obama of similar FEC violations.

It seems pretty clear that ACORN was involved in fraudulent registration submissions BUT bottom line is they paid people to do the work and gave them quotas. A few bums filled out form themselves with fictitious names to meet their quotas. This has nothing to do with voter fraud it has to do with lazy workers. The fictitious people can't vote anyway AND THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH OBAMA.

RE: Rick Davis, John McCain’s campaign manager:

“Following the news that Davis was paid $2 million over five years as president of an advocacy group set up by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the New York Times now reports that Freddie Mac paid Davis's lobbying firm $15,000 a month up until last month. The firm was kept on the payroll because of Davis's close ties to McCain. The news comes after McCain insisted that Davis has had no involvement with Freddie Mac for several years, leading progressive bloggers to wonder whether McCain lied to Americans or whether Davis lied to McCain.”

One would think that McCain and Palin would get tired of slinging mud at the wall and see what sticks.

After all they are runing for the two most powerful jobs in the country. I would think their concern would be the country.

I am sure that Obama and Biden could dig up dirt on the others but they let McCain and Palin speak for the selves. Stay on the issues Senator Obama and you will be fine.

Agreed johnsonc2. The media needs to take some responsibility and stop reporting these "allegations" until there's some substantiated proof behind it. It's amazing how these right-wing fear-mongerers actually have the nerve to call the media "liberal". The media will expose anything they think will bring attention. They don't have political agendas. It is making me antsy, so close to have this country led by intelligence, reason and common-sense again instead of by "guy", "instinct" and "jeebus". Where did this country go wrong? Obama's plans for education are a good thing, it re-fortifies the intellect we need and eliminates the ignorance that is rampant in this country.

Great strategy -- wait until the very last minute to make accusations of crimes that will take MONTHS to investigate.

Tell us again how that is supposed to persuade a large number of fervent Obama supporters to not only drop their support, but to actually switch ranks and vote for McCain?

McCain is desperate. McCain and Palin supporters can be heard beating a drum that has me apprehensive and fearful that violence will befall Obama soon. Palin has actually gone so far as to entertain outright death threats, and the Secret Service even turned a blind eye to this. Unthinkable. (I dare you, go ANYWHERE and make ANY suggestion of ANY violence against a candidate for President or any other elected offical, and then report back to us if and when you are released.)

Education - who would you hire?

Obama:
Occidental College - Two years.
Columbia University - B.A. political science with a specialization in
international relations.
Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude

Biden:
University of Delaware - B.A. in history and B.A. in political science.
Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.)

vs.

McCain:
United States Naval Academy - Class rank 894 out of 899 (meaning that, like
George Bush, McCain was at the bottom of his class)

Palin:
Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester
North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study
University of Idaho - 2 semesters - journalism
Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester
University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in journalism

Background and their choices - I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have
this straight.....
* If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're
'exotic,
different.'
* Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.
* If your name is Barack, you're a radical, unpatriotic.
* Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.
* Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
* Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well
grounded.
* If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first
black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive
that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law
professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with
over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human
Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a
state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the
Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs
committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.
* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council
and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as
the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to
become the country's second highest ranking executive.
* If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2
beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real
Christian.
* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your
disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.
* If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the
proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
* If while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other
option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen
daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.
* If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a
prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community,
then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't
represent
America's.
* If you're husband is nicknamed 'First Dude', with at least one
DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age
25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska
from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.

Hey idiot this is just one city in the article below....Chicago probably has many more dead voters based on their past history.

By Lee Ann O'Neal | Thursday, October 9th, 2008 Houston, Texas

Thousands on the rolls after death, creating potential for fraud
Woodwick Street was quiet — with a few residents working in their yards and adding to post-storm brush piles at the curb — when Texas Watchdog visited on a recent Saturday to try to find Harris County voter Linda K. Hill.

“I’m sorry, but she passed on two years ago,” said a mustached man wearing a Dallas Cowboys baseball cap and driving a motorized chair down the street. He was Linda Hill’s husband, Henderson Hill Jr.

Linda Kay Hill, a homemaker and Louisiana native, died Aug. 2, 2006, of a heart attack, her husband recalled, and is buried at Houston Memorial Gardens in Pearland. But Harris County voter records indicate she –- or someone using her identity –- cast a ballot in the November election that year. Linda Hill of Woodwick Street voted in person on Election Day, records show.

She is among the more than 4,000 people whose names are listed both on Harris County’s voter rolls and also in a federal database of death records, a Texas Watchdog analysis has found.

And dozens of those people, like Linda Hill, have apparently cast ballots from beyond the grave, records since 2004 show. One expert says the number of deceased names used to cast ballots may be higher than what Texas Watchdog’s analysis found.

Instances of dead voters’ names being used to cast ballots were most frequent in three elections, the November 2004 general election, the November 2006 general election and the March 2008 Democratic primary, the analysis found.

Less than a month away from an election to decide the highest office in the land, some advocates worry that such errors in the voter records open the door for fraud, compromise the integrity of results and lessen voter confidence in the system.

The findings come as the group ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, has faced scrutiny in multiple states for allegedly improper voter registrations — including players for the Dallas Cowboys, not in the Lone Star State, but in Nevada. The group’s Nevada offices were raided by state officials earlier this week.

The few ACORN applications that are not accurate are a very small percentage of the total submitted. Even applications directly to the county clerks are inaccurate. Big deal. Look at what is going on in Colorado and El Paso County. Should we arrest all republicans involved with this scam?

October 9, 2008

Secretary of State Mike Coffman

Colorado Department of State

1700 Broadway

Denver, CO 80290

Dear Secretary Coffman:

I am certain that you share my view that the opportunity to vote in our elections is a fundamental right that, as public officials, we must make every effort to protect. I believe that you also share my commitment to ensuring that all Coloradans who are qualified and wish to exercise this right have every opportunity to do so in November's election. The purpose of this letter is to urge you to take more aggressive steps to correct an error made by your office regarding the deadline for remedying an incomplete voter registration application. A letter prepared by your office and mailed by a number of county clerks incorrectly told over 4,000 registrants with incomplete applications that any deficiencies had to be rectified by October 6, 2008. As you know, under state statute and your own rules, these registrants may correct or supplement their applications at anytime prior to voting. See C.R.S. § 1-2-509(3); Election Rule 2.6.3. Your dissemination of inaccurate information may disenfranchise hundreds or thousands of Coloradans, an outcome that is unacceptable.

Since Monday my Office has been contacted directly by scores of constituents who are concerned that they and others who thought they registered to vote will be disenfranchised come election day. Members of my staff have been in contact with members of your staff, and I am aware that your office learned last Friday that your initial instruction to county clerks was inaccurate. Further, I understand that your office is preparing a letter to go to the applicants who were provided inaccurate information, but that this letter will not be completed until Friday of this week at the earliest. or as late as next week. In my view this letter alone is too little, too late. I urge you, as the chief election official in this State, to direct all county election officials to make personal contact by telephone with each potential voter who may have been misled or confused by the earlier communications. I urge you to direct county election officials to include these people on the polling books statewide and to provide these individuals with the opportunity to remedy this technical deficiency at the polls on election day. Finally, I urge you to contact media outlets statewide to ensure that corrected information is communicated as broadly as possible. In short, please ensure that these individuals are notified that they will be afforded every opportunity to remedy any deficiencies in their applications with minimal burden through election day.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time this season that county election officials have issued erroneous communications that have the potential to disenfranchise qualified voters. Last month, EI Paso County Clerk and Recorder Bob Balink publicly acknowledged that he had misinterpreted Colorado law when he sent an erroneous message to Colorado College indicating that students whose parents live in another state and claim them as dependents for tax purposes are not eligible to register to vote in Colorado. Even after correcting his error, Mr. Balink posted on his office's website a caution to college students warning them of potential negative ramifications of registering to vote in Colorado. These actions were, in the first case, wrong and in the other, beyond the scope of his duties as Clerk. His actions are unacceptable and should be carefully scrutinized by your office.

It is critical that public officials charged with carrying out the law provide the public with accurate information. It is all the more critical when, as here, the wrong information has the impact of discouraging citizens from exercising a fundamental right. Providing the wrong information is inexcusable for many reasons: it disenfranchises voters; it makes citizens skeptical (especially when the chief election official is on the ballot); and it exposes the State to litigation risk. But most importantly, it risks impacting the outcome of the election.

Our focus as public officials should be on ensuring that every qualified elector in this State is able to exercise his or her right to vote in the upcoming election. This includes encouraging the use of mail-in ballots, as well as expanding access to early voting opportunities. To that end, I ask that you join me in requesting that every county across our State open its polls on weekends during the early voting period, as feasible. Providing additional access to early voting opportunities across the State, at times most convenient for the working men and women of Colorado, is all the more critical in this year's election when we can expect record turnout and a longer than usual ballot. In addition, I ask that you join me in requesting that those voters who have the flexibility in their schedules to permit them to vote between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on election day, when lines will be shortest, do so. It is steps like these that will help ensure that all Coloradans who are registered and wish to vote will be able to exercise this fundamental right.

Thank you for your prompt attention to these issues.

Sincerely,

Bill Ritter, Jr.

Governor

Interesting how the repubs get their panties all in a bunch about a bunch of ineligible voter registrations applications where the bad apps will not even be casting a vote. And yet they say not a word about the hundreds of thousands of voters who have had their names purged illegally in 6 states by their own party. That is the real story, thousands denied their right to vote by republican and state party hacks orchestrated by Rove. Btw it is also quite despicable how the republicans are disenfranchising our military personal, college students, elderly, and vets by trying to deny them the right to vote and sending out fear mongering blatantly false missives to voters to make them think they can not vote. This Acorn debacle is nothing but a red herring to hide their own far more unpatriotic doings, to install their own puppets in the administration.

If you turned in a million phony registrations, you would not be able to get ONE VOTE out of them.

Elections are stolen by suppression, removal, or number-juggling of ACTUAL VOTES, NOT VOTER REGISTRATIONS.

Along with the resurrection of the names of Wright, Ayers, or a middle name, this was not even an issue until Sen. McCain lost the second debate.

The time is now!
To remind Americans that Barack Hussein Obama is just another politician that will do or say whatever it takes to fulfill his political ambitions. Barack is calculated and methodical about hiding his true convictions and intentions, and uses deception to get elected.

The time is now!
For Americans to remember Barack Hussein Obama’s intimate 20 year relationship with the Priest of Hate, Jeremiah Wright, who blessed Barack and Michelle marriage and baptized both their daughters. AND, to remember the hideous videos of Jeremiah Wright’s congregation which included the Obamas, damning America with bombastic joy, after the Muslim’s criminal attack on America on 9/11.

The time is now!
For Americans to remember how Barack's Priest of Hate, Jeremiah Wright used his tax-exempt church to exercise a radical political agenda, and how he refers to Israel, as well as America, as a "racist" State. Barack's religious leader, Jeremiah Wright believes that the true 'Chosen People' are the blacks; and that black values are superior to middle-class American values.
Indeed Barack's Priest of Hate, Jeremiah Wright is a black supremacist.

The time is now!
To remind Americans that Barack Hussein Obama wants to be president to implement Jeremiah Wright’s dream of a black supremacist society in America.

The time is now!
For Americans of all political parties to come together to preserve the future of the country we love and have always been proud of, by voting for a True American Patriot and War Hero who risked his life for our country:
John McCain for President of the United States of America.

Country First!
Americans for John McCain/Sarah Palin

by the way....

ACORN is registering people...if most of

the registrations have declared REPUBLICAN as their party choice, should the REPUBLICANS be held completely responsible for any fraud that might happen...

BINGO!!

Obama will now finally be exposed for the crooked connections. ACORN, Ayers and more to come.

Obama would not even pass the background check for secret service so he is not qualified to guard a president much less be a president.

The desperate democrats once again snatch failure from the jaws of success.

One of the acorn workers who was not hired for her high IQ blurted out in a live TV interview..."yes I support Obama and talk the people I sign up into voting for Obama."

Somebody is going to do jail time. Probably should be the head of the snake who trained these crooks in the first place! Hint, his name starts with Barak.

ACORN claims it has to turn over every registration, even if they think there might be a fraud. They report every suspicion but say authorities don't take any action - until months later, when they turn on ACORN and charge them.

What about the Bush/Gore election, btw - wasn't that actually stolen, for real? By the Republican party and its allies.

Sounds like a part of the American establishment just can't bear the thought of a black First Family in the White House. When you hear Republican rallygoers recklessly label Obama a terrorist (yes, now they have gone from "associating with a terrorist" to "being a terrorist") without being able to say what they really mean, you wonder.

Voter Fraud is the most despicable violations of the rights of Americans that I can think of. I wait 4 years to cast my one vote out of civic duty and a belief in the Constitution and the democratic system. To think that an Association of "**Community Organizers**" for Reform Now (ACORN) could silence my voice by canceling my vote with a fraudulent ballots, makes me mad enough to exercise my second amendment rights. I talk about this in detail on my blog.

ACORN will not get another $ from congress. Democrats up for reelection in 2010 will not fall into the trap waiting for them. The voting registration is small potatoes - the big money was extorting banks and financial institutions to loan money to people who were NOT credit worthy. This act injected the virus that brought down the entire credit system. You can not manipulate the beta (risk for those of you who have not taken ECON 101) without it playing havoc later on. Wall Street, Govt, all to blame in this mess...as are those who bought homes without anything down payment!!!

MODERATE REPUBLICANS....

liking the fascist bent of your party nowadays? if not, please consider voting for Obama. He DOES NOT condone hate rallies or shouts about killing opponents.

GOP is becoming the violent hate party of the US. How humiliating for the intelligent REpublicans who have worked to make the country better....

your party is being overrun with crazed extremists.

Democrats will not threaten to hurt you or kill you, and will not try to terrorize you into submission for your vote.

America is rejecting all of this hate from mccain....Obama''s polls are increasing specifically because of the hate and the sickening reputation the extremists are giving the GOP.

"Obama has ties to ACORN and acorn has been suspect of fraud activity but now it's big time. 1 Man registered 72 times with ACORN'S assistance. Please corruption Obama style"

Please read this carefully, and then think it through all the way to the logical conclusion.

That man can still only vote one time.

Gwynne....sorry to say that the early vote scheme in Ohio and other states will not allow one to 'validate' the identity of the voter. Again, this is no big deal...very few votes will be affected...just the thought is enough to make someone sick...

Sorry wes1155....the problem is ACORN. They recruit unqualified individuals to canvas neighborhoods. This is a govt work program gone bad.

'"We don't think the election is something that should be stolen from the American electorate," Davis said, calling on Obama to join him in calling for the inquiries."'

No one can vote with the made-up registration cards.

Say it with me.

THEY CANNOT BE USED BY ANYONE TO VOTE.

They cannot be used to 'steal' anything.

Repeat as often as necessary for comprehension to set in.

As much as you may hate liberals, they don't have an army of clones standing by waiting to vote under the name of a person who doesn't actually exist.

The Florida election of 2000 is way different. Remember in 2000 Bush was ahead by around 2000 votes. So the trick is if you want to steal an election (Straight out of Mayor Daly's guide book so to speak) You count and recount until you make the numbers go the other way. That is what Al Gore tried to do. Keep counting until there negative numbers became positive. If was obviouc they weren't going to be satisfied until they got there numbers there way. If not it was stolen, give me a break they were never in the lead prior to recount procedures.

Obama has ties to ACORN and acorn has been suspect of fraud activity but now it's big time. 1 Man registered 72 times with ACORN'S assistance. Please corruption Obama style

I know, I know, it may sound far fetched and smack of conspiracy theory, but hey, what the heck.

Anyway, when I was reading about the issues of the 5000 voter registration forms from the Gary, Indiana area and how the Board of Elections there said so many were blatantly falsified it made me wonder, How could anyone trying to perpetrate fraud be so stupid? That's when the thought crossed my mind maybe it is a deliberate attempt to discredit ACORN. Hmm...

Posted by: wes1155 | October 10, 2008 6:03 PM | Report abuse

The good news is that the ACORN travesty has been lit up. I doubt that they will have any impact on the election. However, ACORN will disappear from the list of NGOs receiving taxpayer funds.

Its a little late but obvious.

Obama's campaign has been trying to register as many people along with absentee ballots as possible without any regard for checking validity.

It's not just this organization but most of the new registration has been seriously flawed. The reason - win at any cost. Somehow winning at any cost has given justification for the left to blatantly cheat.

I'm not saying that doesn't or hasn't happened on the Republican side but this year has been ridiculous.

Posted by: jabberwolff | October 10, 2008 5:59 PM | Report abuse

I would assume if the Republicans are talking about stealing the election that they have plans to actually try it. Maybe that is why Obama is so heavily invested in Florida, with his campaign leadership here. Obama may be anticipating this and wants his best electoral effort aimed where the Republicans have control of the voting apparatus.

McCain is real big on investigations. He wanted a commission on the cause of this crisis but two days later he knew it was caused by the Democrats.

He wants an investigation today but by Monday he will have indicted and convicted him. The fact that Obama was very loosely associated with Acorn before those in charge took it over makes all of this nonsense about Acorn a smokescreen for an absence of substance to the charges. But we will have a dribbling out of charges that will be refuted. In this environment I think people will be annoyed with McCain.

If the stock market starts rising next week, Republicans do not get too excited, that is a sign that Obama will win. The market rallied into the election during the last three elections of a Democrat after faltering just after labor day. Don't get too excited though because if history repeats it will decline after the election.

Today it seems that America is like a ship sailing in very rough seas. The ocean that she is sailing is full of people, Americans, ready to make a difference and put their shoulders to the problems facing America. However, as we all know, oceans are full of sharks and this ocean is so infested with sharks that it is named the Media Ocean. Consider: The Good Ship America, The Media Ocean and The Obama Iceberg at: http://zachjonesishome.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/the-good-ship-america-the-media-ocean-and-the-obama-iceberg/
