Facing Stiff Odds, McCain Looks to Rise Again

By Dan Balz
NASHVILLE -- It was a late night for John McCain's campaign -- a post-debate repast of karaoke until the wee hours of the rain-soaked morning. They sang neither in celebration nor to drown their sorrows. Tuesday's debate did not fundamentally alter the race.

Instant polls judged Barack Obama the winner. The post-debate chatter on the cable channels tended to favor Obama. Even reliably conservative voices on CNN -- Alex Castellanos, Leslie Sanchez and William Bennett -- found it hard to award the evening to McCain. When the polls are heading in one direction, conventional wisdom follows.

Which is why McCain needs the numbers to move, even a bit, the other way. He's like the stock markets. Lack of confidence breeds retreat. He needs an injection of fresh political confidence in his presidential candidacy.

Mark Salter, the candidate's alter ego and confidant, was in the lobby of McCain's hotel Wednesday, neither grim nor giddy but still shaking out cobwebs. "We've been dead before," he said.

He would know, having weathered McCain's long, wild ride through the primaries and now the general election. But is there a plan? "We can't die again," he said.

Henry Paulson and Ben Bernanke couldn't have said it better. Try something and see if it works. If that isn't sufficient, try more. McCain's answer in the debate was a $300 billion plan to stabilize the housing market by buying up and renegotiating bad mortgages.

The overnight focus groups conducted by McCain's campaign offered a little comfort, particularly compared with those by news organizations. The voters assembled by the campaign, said one senior official, did not see an Obama victory. Nor did they apparently see a McCain triumph, he said. These voters thought both candidates did well and now it's on to the next round.

Mike DuHaime, McCain political director, said internal campaign polling does not make the electoral map look as bad as some public polls suggest. For example: Asked why, if he had given up on Michigan, McCain had not given up on Iowa, a state that looks strong for Obama in public polls, DuHamie said because their own polling has Obama's lead in low single digits.

He said the upper Midwest battlegrounds -- Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota -- seem to be moving as a block. They looked bad before the Republican convention, but as of now, he believes there's no reason for McCain to give up on them. The Democrats believe otherwise. They see all three states firming up, although Wisconsin remains the most competitive.

Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, told reporters after the debate that he still likes his candidate's situation. Better, he said, to be defending red states than having to convert blue states to win. He has lots of them to defend right now -- Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Colorado, Iowa, New Mexico and North Carolina.

DuHaime also said there is positive evidence that McCain is catching up to Obama in the battle to mobilize voters. The past two weeks, he said, McCain's campaign has contacted more voters, by phone or door-to-door, than the vaunted Bush machine did in comparable weeks four years ago. One week, he said, the increase was 40 percent over last year.

Part of that is the Palin effect. The selection of Sarah Palin brought a surge of new volunteers into the McCain campaign. Once processed into the system, they are now helping to expand the reach of McCain's phone banks and street-level canvassing.

They are helping to produce mountains of data -- the results of every call are entered into a database overnight for officials at the Republican National Committee and the McCain campaign to parse. When combined with other data, the McCain team can see how their candidate is improving or slipping among different categories of voters, sliced every which way through microtargeting analysis.

What to do? Scott Reed, who ran Bob Dole's campaign 12 years ago and knows what happens when a candidate falls behind, said McCain should offer a more comprehensive economic plan that deals with the current crisis -- and "stay focused on Pennsylvania, Ohio and Wisconsin." Florida, he added, "is a must win."

Tad Devine, who was at the center of the past two losing Democratic campaigns, argued that McCain now is in worse shape than either Al Gore or John F. Kerry at this time in their campaigns.

Devine offered a clinical strategy that he said is McCain's best hope: forget the Kerry states (including New Hampshire), as well as Iowa and New Mexico and put everything into Ohio and Florida.

"To do that, he must attack Obama, with ads that work in those places, down to the individual markets," he wrote in a message. "So in the panhandle in Florida, they should attack on culture/values. In the middle of the state, on taxes. In the south (not Miami -- too expensive) on economy, that Obama will hurt small business. This should be a market by market strategy, not a national strategy. Same in Ohio. He needs to get those two back, and the only way to do it is with negative ads in base markets, and economic ads in swing markets."

John Weaver, who once was McCain's chief strategist, said McCain needs global movement. "There are too many problematic states for the campaign to try to play prevent defense in any one, which doesn't usually work even when you're ahead," he wrote. "The campaign must close the gap dramatically and quickly on dealing with the economy in a way that connects with and gives hope to a broad range of Americans -- and not just focus on Obama's deficiencies. This is the only way -- in a big election -- to close the polling gap and change the narrative. These coming days are the last opportunity Senator McCain has to show the American people the inspirational, empathetic leader we know him to be."

Tuesday's debate did not really answer the question many Americans are asking. Are either of these candidates truly up to tackling the problems the next president will inherit?

Both have struggled with economic issues throughout their campaigns and it showed again Tuesday night. For the second consecutive debate, neither fully stepped up to the moment of a country in an economic crisis, with voters deeply anxious about their jobs, mortgages, retirement savings and health care.

Neither found a way to explain where we are as cogently and clearly as the next president will be asked to do. Both played the blame game over who was more complicit in allowing the problems to develop; both talked about ways to prevent the next crisis when resolving the current crisis is the nation's real priority.

Obama was calm at a time when calm is valuable. But he was focused on winning the debate and the election. That's smart politics but in a month he could be the president-elect, and then the whole mess will be on his shoulders. Does he have the passion and the sense of urgency to restore confidence as Franklin D. Roosevelt did when he assumed the presidency in 1933?

McCain was better in this debate than the first -- more engaged with his rival and engaged with those asking the questions. He offered his mortgage plan to show he gets the problems people are feeling, but he did so in a way that left lots of questions. He didn't drive the biggest new piece of his message. And, while he insisted he knows how to solve the problems facing the economy, he provided no evidence.

But where Obama has used the first two debates effectively is to persuade voters that he is as capable as McCain when it comes to taking over the presidency.

McCain's strategy is grounded in the need to disqualify his opponent. Without that, the underlying structure of the race favors the Democrat. But after two debates, in head-to-head competition, Obama has not come off as the callow youth to McCain's steady hand. Even a draw hurts McCain.

McCain made a good case for himself and was about as pointed as a candidate can be in a town hall setting in taking on his opponent. But nothing in the first two debates has contributed to disqualifying Obama -- and certainly the public reaction confirms that.

The final debate on Oct. 15 could be the best of the three -- just the two candidates at a table with CBS's Bob Schieffer as moderator. The topic will be all domestic issues and it will be an opportunity to bore in on both candidates in ways the first two debates have not allowed.

In the meantime, McCain will need to gather fresh momentum, somehow. But the narrative has turned sharply against him and his every move is questioned. If he gets tough, it's described as desperation. If he deals only with the economy, it plays to the Democrats' natural advantage. And he'll need a sterling performance in the final debate.

But inside the McCain campaign there is resolve, which comes from the candidate himself. Whatever difficult days lie ahead, they believe they have seen worse. McCain put it best in his closing statement Tuesday:

"I know what it's like in dark times," he said. "I know what it's like to have to fight to keep one's hope going through difficult times. I know what it's like to rely on others for support and courage and love in tough times. I know what it's like to have your comrades reach out to you and your neighbors and your fellow citizens and pick you up and put you back in the fight."

The mentality of posters such as gibsonhsn really scares me. Obviously a redneck conspiracy theorist if ever there was one. Probably believes we never went to the moon either. People like this are the ones who pose a danger to the great democracy that is the U.S and do more to dishonour the American flag.I suspect that such a person would never be able to bring himself to vote either for anyone with balanced and educated views or an African American. Absurd!

I suppose it's possible John McCain could make a comeback. It would take one heck of a disaster, though. And I don't mean the one that just came out of Wall Street, either.

I've read with great interest some of the pros and cons for voting for Obama and McCain. However, the dumbest reason to NOT vote for someone is because of their name or because it sounds too close to one that is infamous.

Neither Barack nor John named themselves.

As for guilty by association there's a lot to be said on both sides.

When Ayers (Weathermen) tried to bomb back in the 60's, Obama was a child. Obama did not participate in either building nor tossing a bomb. As for launching his political career in Ayers livingroom, it has been found that it wasn't Ayers who threw the party, he simply provided the venue. And, let's not forget that the Annenburghs who both Barack and Ayers worked for are Republicans.

McCain with Keating, Iran-Contra, the woman who killed the Abortion doctor (I can see her face with the long dark hair and big glasses but can't recall her name), etc., was an adult who chose these Associates. Add Phil Graham to the mix and McCain's long list of Lobbyist... including Rick, his campaign manager, who up to recently was still collecting from Fannie Mae.

Palin is out on the trail stoking patriotism angsts. Where was her angst when her own husband was a member of a Secessionist party? Isn't that a terrorist group by her definition?

But we are where we are and neither candidate always used the best judgement when it came to some of their friends.

Right now the USA is going through a crisis that is also spreading globally. Instead of looking back we'd better look forward or we'll all sink.

God bless the USA and may He help us choose the right person.

McCain and Palin, in their desperation, are trying to unleash the lynching mob. Their vicious attacks on Obama have only one objective: to inspire fear and hate. They let their substitutes shout what they can't say explicitly- call Obama a terrorist, "not one of us", use his middle name. It is scary to see the redneck mobs at their rallies, so easy steered into a racist frenzy. Looking at these spectacles reminds one of crowds cheering Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin, and our domestic hate groups like KKK. It is a very dangerous game.
Questions that come to mind:
Is McCain trying to get Obama assassinated by one of his crazy supporters?
Does he want to incite race riots?
Is he the patriot that he professes to be?
Does he put his country first?
Is this the America we are proud of?

Obama Barrack Hussein sounds like Osama Saddam Hussein. I don't trust Obama, he is full of mysteries and if you guys look at the YouTube.com, he never salute or face the American flag when the America national anthem was being played. I remember once the Al-Qaeda vowed that if they cannot attack America from the outside, they will attack American soil from the inside, i.e. the white house. This is well known on the newspaper published during the Afgan and Iraq war. This is also shown in YouTube. Just do a search on Obama Hussein and you will find it. Don't trust Obama, he may be just another terror waiting to slash or harm the Americans suddenly by passing all the secret military information to the terrorists, once he becomes president. So we better be careful of him. I do not trust Obama. Better play safe and choose a more trustworthy American, McCain. P.S. I am not McCain fans, but I believe McCain would be better to handle our American's soil. Long live the American Flag.

Again, consider the source; who is djmelfi to tell us what Obama believes ?
I am from Hawaii; I know Obama's mannerisms; his respect for people, reflected in his personable demeanor; he spent a lot of time here.
His popularity, unlike Palin's in her home state; see cronyism, end of timers' withcraft blessings, earmarks, big oil tax money, in Hawaii and Chicago, is based on down to earth relationships.

Most if not all the accusations I hear from people like djmelfi, are fear based code for "not like me, so woooo woooo, danger, baaaad... " ... or "blaaaaack, foreignnnnn naaaame, ooooo, be scaaaaared, really scaaaaared" .
Not to mention the milionaire billionaire right wing media talk jocks whipping up fears and hate for the big oil/ big money right wingers... I do mean big money. I mean how effective need Hannity be to protect Murdoch's interests? Reeeeallly effective.
Like FUNDAMENTAL Christian effective....
Small town values is code for small world narrow minded diminishment of people that are from a different place and possibly point of view.
The negativity comes from the propaganda you buy into so those with the power will keep it; their biggest fear is to loose power and they will stop at nothing to lose it.
As weak of a ticket Mccain / Palin are.
The media are big time owned by mostly ultra rich conservatives; why/how would they be in Obama's pocket?

If you know Obama based on relating to him, you know the accusations are false.
He, unlike Mccain, doesn't have a 30 yr history of "everything but the kitchen sink"...

Kathryn11; all I can say is "baloney"; I don't even have to read Dick Morris to know that Hilary had enough skeletons and baggage in her closet to warrant losing to Obama. If you weren't so blind to reality, you would see your objections are mere "projections" of your own inner struggles... Obama's baggage has been vetted and believe me, his relative newness to politics is his saving grace; trust me; if for nothing other than his lack of time on the job, he is clean.
Same analysis to be said of Mccain; too long of tooth and talk about flip flop;
---yes Hillary could beat him handily, because she's whited; not the least of reasons why we need more a change than what she offers.
Sarah is not in Obama's league; if it weren't for Mccain's desperation, we wouldn't know better about the "bridge to nowhere", troopergate, wolve kills, withcraft insurance and mooseburgers.
Mccains' potential rise is like the proverbial bad penny; can;t seem to get rid of him;
It's pathetic how in a corrupt system, all he needs to do is not be such a lousy campaigner... but he can't deliver.

After Nov. 4 there will be no real political future for Sarah Palin. She will become the biggest "flash in a pan" candidate in the history of this country. This National scene is way to hard for her. Just today I was noticing how spent she is looking. No, once this fling is over it will be back to Alaska for the beauty queen where she will be left to deal with her mess she left behind.

You are being unfair to President Carter. All the leaders of the world at that time are regarded as bad.

It was the worlds first Oil Shock and no one was prepared for it.

Look at other nations around the world at the time and you will see a similar economic story.

As for Iran. Again how could Jimmy Carter foresee a pack of fanatics taking government who would totally totally ignore diplomatic rules not broken since medieval times.

She's staking out a calim on the far right evangelicals and, like a good fascist, will wait till the economy is in crisis, appear reasonable, blame outside enemies for the problems and..then start to burn and attack 'opposition' newspapers and television station. DemocracyRules,

how can you write that drivel with a straight face? Where do you get your evidence about Obama's positions? Did you make it up or did you get it from titans of the left wing media conspiracy such as Rush Limbaugh?
If you think that America is heading down the path of Communism then I suggest to you that you have absolutely no idea what Communism is, in practice or in principle. Then why talk about if you don't know what it is?
I'll explain it to you DemocracyRules, read carefully - Communism is not a system of government for people like you, it is a buzzword that you use to ensure that people agree with you, or to scare them into listening to you. For you then to have the gall to say you then believe in Freedom is disgraceful. Let me tell you a little secret you may not know - it is you and the party you defend that is the incarnation of Stalin in this country, in the way you try to manipulate public opinion through deception. It is not the liberals and Obama freaks you lionise.
If Obama was running for the Republican party, he would be in the same position as McCain is now (and I like John McCain). I am not an Obama supporter, I'm just very much a non Republican supporter. Just so you know.

I still don't know how Obama became our Democrat candidate. He used swift boat tactics on his own party and lied and lied. That was crooked dealings going on there. Hillary won all the major states except Obama's home state and the last 8 out of 10 primaries. There were crooked dealings going on, and Donna Brazile was an example and the face of evil in my Democrat party. She always seems to have a face full of hate. Who and what does she hate? Us and this country?

They (with the help of the news and bribes?) managed to keep covered up his dealings and support from Bill Ayers, his bad non-Christian Rev. Wright, Farrkhan and Rezko, the crook, who helped him get his house with a sweetheart deal. That is really a dream house. None of McCain's compare to it. Also, McCain's wife has always needed top security and a variety of cars. She, like Kerry's wife is very rich. Obama is far, far, far from being a pauper. He was never a poor child. He never knew what poor really meant.

And, yet, this crook is now in sight of the White House. God help us.

Dear phillayton,

You clearly missed the point of why I put Stalin's quote here. You talk about the 'loyalty to the principle of freedom' and 'morality that respects every person's right'. I agree these are the principles on which this great nation is build upon.
However, what I see today, scares me. Namely, Controlled and Biased Press. This country is starting to resemble the good old USSR. Obama's is a socialist if you look closely at his agenda. For 20+ years, Obama has listened to the hateful anti-white, anti-semitic speeches of his spiritual adviser, his other associates and friends. HE DID NOT OBJECT TO IT, BUT EMBRACED IT. Obama's supporters want to shot everybody up, because you want to control the truth, just the way Stalin did. By the way, Stalin was an extremely popular figure in USSR, millions cried when he died, thousands were stampede to death at his funeral. The History knows one fact, he is responsible for 20 million death. Russia also went through indoctrination, similar to what is happening with Obama supporters. The True America sees it, you are blinded by it.

fyi -

first - jobs created under Clinton vs. Bush graph -
http://majorityleader.house.gov/docUploads/JobsCreatedClintonvsBush.pdf

from another post- anyone can do the math if they disagree.

I took the BEA annual data and categorized it by President, then took the average of year-over-year growth (in the annual column) during the term of that President.

Here are the results:
GDP Growth by President
-9.35% Hoover (1930-1932 only)
6.25% Roosevelt (1933-1940)
15.04% Roosevelt (1941-1944)
1.38% Truman (1945-1952)
2.95% Eisenhower
4.25% Kennedy
5.22% Johnson
2.86% Nixon
2.57% Ford
3.28% Carter
3.42% Reagan
2.14% Bush 41
3.71% Clinton
2.37% Bush 43 (2001-2007 only)

Just for fun, I calculated cumulative average values for Republican and Democratic Presidents.
Guess what? It isn’t just Reagan, Republicans in aggregate suck too:

All years: (1929-Present)
Republican 1.00%
Democratic 5.59%

Post-war (1949-Present)
Republican 2.72%
Democratic 4.95%

Adams put the analysis together in response to an assertion that Obama’s policies would be a repeat of “failed 70’s liberal/socialist experiments”.

The conclusion I reach is that Republican Presidents have been
only about half as good for the country as Democrats, and that the best performing Republican over the last 80 years would only rate better than only two of the 7 Democrats serving during that period. If you consider data from 1949 on, Reagan is better than only Carter (and not by much).

The two largest welfare programs for the poor, AFDC and food stamps, each take up only 1 percent of the combined government budgets. Attempts to expand the definition of "welfare" to make this figure larger will inevitably include popular middle class programs like Medicaid and student loans.

In reference to DemocracyRules

You start talking common sense, and you get a barrage of right wing republican freaks rolling off stalin quotes as a manifesto. America is a great nation, primarily for its loyalty to the principles of freedom it has built its foundations on. In this lies its morality, the morality that respects every persons inherent right to be the person they want to be, not in the ability to force morality onto others. That is what Stalin did. That is what a theocratic Iran does to its people.
Why don't you get it? Are you so full of your own lies and deceit, or that of Republican cronies like the National Review or Sean Hannity, that when basic logic stares you in the face you deny it? It is really getting very thin for you people. You have very little left to stand on, not even any sort of economic credentials. I don't even consider your position moral from a christian perspective. Change your outlook before you become irrelevant.

It hasn't worked in the last 8 yrs.

Right now the economy is paramount. Everybody is worried about material. There is one candidate who can help the situation, even though no president has total control. But more important than our material welfare is our spiritual welfare. There is one candidate who can provide the example of honor. The sad thing is the importance of honor will never be asked about in a presidential debate.

I agree with the headline: McCain is an Odd old Stiff.

The repub mind control experts who picked palin, just trying to use the old TV formula of Regis Philbin and Kathy Lee, creating fake virility by juxtaposing the old stiff with a fertile young woman. Not gonna work.

McCain learned the value of honor, an old fashioned concept in the view of Obama and many who follow him, in a North Vietnamese prison camp. There is no course in honor taught at Harvard. McCain was chiseled into a strong everlasting patriot. He saw the goodness and justice of America for the first time. It made him who he is. He cannot change.

Obama saw evil in America. He cannot change.

Obama was born with a clean body. As a child he was clean. Then he entered Chicago politics. He met the terrorist and liked him but denied him. He thought he could work with the terrorist. He began to dishonor his body and mind. From his mouth came corrupting thoughts: All rural folks cling to guns and religion, America is an evil country, US troops bombed women and children, and he voted for infanticide and subscribed to the wayward Chicago church for 20 years.

McCain said everything he learned about leadership was from a Chief Petty officers in the Navy. From where I am standing he didn't learn much.

He even tried to take a page from Sarah Palin's book and be folksy . How many times did he say the word friend? Many times? You betcha! My friends and I were like, he is not our friend.

John McCain and the GOP are in a very desperate position. Obama needs to continue to stay on his guard. The GOP will try to pull every last punch. They are digging, they are researching. They will use anything against Obama they can find. This Ayers incident- Old News! Jeremiah Wright -Old news!

Newsflash McCain- people don't care about that crap. They don't like it when Politicians go to negative.
Traditional Republican scaretactics are not working. Raising Taxes. Obama is a danger to America. He pals around with terrorist. Not!

Well it is actually that one( meaning John McCain. He was so rude by the way. Barack Obama never disrespected him by calling him that one, not by his given name) and the ditsy one Sarah Palin that are a danger to America.

People are questioning his choice of her.
This is a woman who at her rallies are bringing out the worst in people, bring out that racism ( which is a page from Newt Gingriches book. Contract with White America.Black people have your jobs, that is the reason why you are doing do poorly.)
Do we want a woman who brings out and does not say hey wait a minute you all are going a little too far within arms length of the Presidency?

Think about that when you cast your vote for McCain. If they win and If and when something happens to him and he can no longer perform the duties of his office guess who we will be looking at as President. A woman who thinks she had foreign affairs experience because Russia and Canada are her neighbors. A woman who is under investigation for possibly abusing her own power. A woman who thinks the Vice Presidency's powers should be expanded.

People think Obama is reckless and dangerous.
This man may not have the experience McCain has. Tell me how continuing Bush's policies in a McCain administration friend will help this country. It hasn't help the last 8 yrs. It has been disasterous.

McCain has had 25 years to get it right. He hasn't yet.
Now they stoop to scare tactics. I will not even been surprised if they try to attack Michelle Obama next.
Obama will stand up for himself but he will maintain a cool head. Quite frankly that is what we nee. We need a change. This man has the best interest of our country at heart. He has the experience of Joe Biden to back him up.
What experience does McCain have to back him up?

The issue on the economy is not going away. This mortgage plan of McCain is a desperate attempt to one show that he knows about the economy but even more so it is another campaign stunt to get votes. It is a smokescreen to make you think that the GOP gives a darn about your house. Now all of a sudden John McCain wants to help!

Question- Was he in support of this when the bill when through in the first place? From what I hear the law gives the Treasury secretary this power now.

Even his own critics of his own party are saying what in the heck. But yet they swallow and say okay. Mindless ! They were mindless with Bush and Mindless with McCain. They will do whatever he wants no matter how wrong it is.

Be on your guard Obama. America needs you to win the election. After all you are for all Americans. Not just whites, not just blacks, not just asians, hispanics. His agenda is for the middle class and the poor. His agenda is for the every day working America who has been drowned by the policies of the Bush adminstration.

Obama is our lifeline. He will keep America from seeking further.

Dear Ronniesmith123,
Media' bias and/or control, shows that the free speech is the way of the past. Most people are concern with economy, healthcare, etc. They do not understand once the freedom of speech goes, so does the democracy.

I am a liberal and a democrat. But, I want the president of my country to be selected based on merits, and not by an overwhelming bias, and propaganda. I don't understand why the media (almost all of them) and liberal-leaning papers like WP, NY Times, LA Times, Boston Globe, etc jump all over, when William Ayers or Tony Rezko's connections with Barack Obama is discussed. After all, if Obama does not have anything to worry, is it not welcome that this thing comes out in the open. Should Obama be protected from any criticism? Didn't the media push us into the Iraq War? They failed us once, and fail us again. In 2000 election, it was painful for me to see the media glowing over Bush as the savior of White House's "integrity" and "morality". We know what we got. Now, it is the media's turn to brainwash everyone into believing Obama has done nothing wrong, and will do none. Please don't push your agenda on us. If there is a story about Obama and Ayers, investigate it, explain it. Don't attack those who bring it in the open. In fact, before Palin talked about it or Clinton brought it, the media should have done that. We don't believe in Hannity. We want YOU to do it for us. Ask Obama why he associated with Ayers, Wright, and Rezko so long and in so much depth. Let the world know what he has to say. Don't push Obama into the White House. Let him earn it. We deserve that, and you (the news media) need to earn that respect, by asking tough questions to Obama too. Don't be a propaganda machine for any party or any candidate. The reason I am a Democrat is because of the dislike I have for right-wing loud mouths. We don't need left-wing cover-up machines. If you believe Obama is good, he'll come out clean. BUT DON'T COVER IT UP.

___

now for some facts -

On 11/19/93, McCain took to the Senate floor to support an early financial deregulation bill and decry what he called "the tremendous regulatory burden imposed on financial institutions." The guy who now claims to be the trustbusting Teddy Roosevelt back then lamented "the rapidly increasing regulatory burden imposed on banks is to cause them to devote substantial time, energy and money to compliance rather than meeting the credit needs of the community."

Ten years later, McCain was bragging to the Associated Press that "I have a long voting record in support of deregulation," and to CNN that "I am a deregulator. I believe in deregulation."

And, during this year's presidential campaign taking place in the shadow of financial meltdown, McCain was only months ago insisting on PBS that "we need less government [and] less regulation" and that "I'm always for less regulation."

McCains 2005 effort never got out of the Republican committee...

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s109-190

Here's another FACT: When the bill came up again in 2007, McCain wasn't even a sponsor!

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s110-1100

Last FACT: Both bills included these deregulatory gems that probably would have crashed the whole system had either been passed:

Excludes the Federal Home Loan Banks from certain securities reporting requirements.
Abolishes the Federal Housing Finance Board.

We need something other than Obama's books to tell us who he is. Are there anyones who can speak up for his community service or is it true that it was ACORN service? Did Obama reached outside of his black community and do something positive for the whites, and ethnic groups in windy city? If he did, someone can vouch for him. They forged earnings reports to show increased earnings keyed to compensation. Franklin took $90 million and returned only half of the loot.

Watching the second debate in Shanghai first on BBC and later on Al Jazeera, and noting that I have already cast an absentee ballot for Obama,
I have begun to feel sorry for McCain, both because of his mildly said attacks on Obama in the debate, some of his foolish anwers, and more importantly on his vicious attacks and those of Palin out on the campaign trail in order to divert attention to the emptiness of their candidacy.
While they are trying to show that Obama is not trustworthy, and Palin is implicitly raising the racial slur--"He is not one of us," and "is paling around with terrorists." Remembering that Obama was 8 when the Weathermen were doing their despicable acts, and that he and Ayers were on a volunteer board in the 1990's, one must ask if now Professor Ayers is thoroughly rehabilitated? Palin, with her fundamentalist Christianity must surely accept the Christian religious concept that individuals can be reformed and lead good lives. In the gospels, Jesus told his apostles that they should forgive 70 x 7. So, if Ayers is now a respectable professor, and both NY Times and CNN have found that the 1990's contacts between Obama and Ayers were casual and not deep, then she should stop this line of attack. In Florida, where she fueled the fire of racial hatred, it is shameful that when the audience member told an African American camera man "to sit down boy," she did not have had the courage to denounce that racist comment.
At the second debate, McCain tried to show a fake sense of civility for the local and a national audience, while trying constantly to invade Obama's space when he was talking to the live audience,. His statement "that one," not even calling Obama by name, was itself smug and condescending. During the first debate, he refused to look at Obama during the entire debate. His facial and body language consistently in both debates belied the more pretend gentle remarks, but dozens of times he also derrogated Obama. Has he no decency. "Liar, liar, your pants are on fire!"
No wonder that the polls are showing that Obama won the debate overwhelmingly, was more likeable, more trustworthy, and more knowledgable. McCain already showed a lack of respect for the office of vice president, and thus for the American people, when he picked Palin as his VP choice. Will the investigator's report in Alaska probing Palin on her ethics due out shortly clear her name or show that she has been unethical? If the latter, then who can the American people really trust? Surely not McCain and Palin! Let us send McCain back to the Senate where he can spend his remaining angry time "at the service of the country, all his life" and Sarah Baracuda back to Waselia, where she can continue to charge a per diem to the State of Alaska for more than half the days when she is at home, and perhaps $43,000 more for her husband and children when they are traveling with her on "official business." Since when do children travel on "official business?"
Do either McCain or Palin have any sense of honor left, or do they try every dirty trick to win the presidency and vice presidency? No issues, only character-bashing of Obama. Perhaps this is why McCain has called himself "old as dirt." He and Palin have made it a truly dirty campaign.

WHO IS SARAH PALIN?
Ask the folks in Ireland:
Headline
Away from her friends on Fox, Palin folds like a cheap suit
KEVIN CULLENMEDIAWATCH: MIDWAY THROUGH her debate with Joe Biden, Sarah Palin began dropping her Gs and channelling Marge Gunderson, the plain-speakin', pistol-packin' pregnant police chief in Fargo.

Palin declared, in no uncertain terms, that she needn't answer questions put to her by the moderator, that Obama-lovin' Gwen Ifill, who works for the ultraliberal Public Broadcasting Service, or anybody else in the mainstream media. She was gonna talk straight to the American people.

It was great theatre, but in a Beckett-like absurdist way. It is a tried and true tactic of the American right to blame any and all their problems on the "mainstream media". They even have an acronym for it: MSM, as if it's some malevolent Chinese food additive. According to the right, the only place the American people can get fair and balanced news is from the likes of Fox, Rush Limbaugh, and the rest of the right-wing ideologues who clutter the airwaves on talk radio.

The truth is, Sarah Palin and John McCain should thank their lucky stars for the dreaded MSM because, aside from the aforementioned ideologues, it is only those members of the MSM who uphold minimal journalistic standards of fairness and relative objectivity who are looking at Palin these days for anything but a punchline.

Even some right-wing pundits have had the temerity to point out that the nice lady from Alaska is an empty suit. Peggy Noonan, Ronald Reagan's speechwriter, got into trouble with her fellow Republicans when, while commenting on McCain's cynical sop to the religious right, she described Palin's selection as "political bulls**t" into a TV microphone she didn't know was on. Noonan's dismissal of Palin as a serious politician in a Wall Street Journal column after the debate was even more devastating, because it came with time for reflection, and after Noonan had withstood withering attacks from Republicans who accused her of aiding and abetting the enemy.

The McCain campaign is blaming the MSM for Palin's steadily sinking poll numbers. An interesting tactic, given that Palin's handlers have steadfastly refused to let journalists from that mainstream media question her. They are especially wary of letting newspaper reporters have a go at her. She has done only a few sit-down interviews with handpicked TV presenters.

One of the interviews, with Sean Hannity, a right-wing pundit on Fox, was cringe-inducingly obsequious, like watching Ryan Tubridy interview Jesus Christ.

The interview with Katie Couric, an avowed liberal who gets paid $15 million a year to read the news on CBS, shouldn't have been much harder for Palin, but Couric asked a couple of questions that required speaking beyond rehearsed talking points, and Palin folded like a cheap suit. Palin fumbled around like a child caught stealing biscuits. At one point, she rambled on for more than a minute in a stream of consciousness that sounded like a cross between a paragraph in Finnegans Wake and Robert De Niro's last, apocalyptic words as he sank beneath the water's surface at the conclusion to Cape Fear.

So worried were Palin's handlers about how she'd perform in the debate that, just days before it, they launched a pre-emptive strike on Ifill, a widely-respected journalist who just happens to be black.

You know, like Barack Hussein Osama. Wink, wink.

The conservatives had a point: Ifill is writing a book called The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama , so she has a personal and financial stake in Obama getting elected.

But when Ifill was selected as moderator two months ago, she disclosed that she was writing the book, and no one complained then. Of course, McCain had not yet selected Tina Fey as his running mate. As it turned out, no one beyond the loony right-wing blogosphere suggested Ifill was anything but impartial during the debate.

It's sad but true that the mainstream media will carry on with the charade, all the way to November 4th, that Sarah Palin is a serious candidate, that she resonates with ordinary voters because she's just so gosh darn ordinary, even if the Republicans have no intention of letting said ordinary voters hear what she has to say in anything but a stage-managed interview. Objectivity is a beautiful thing.

It was beyond ironic, then, when Palin said she was taking the gloves off the other day and accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists".

As her indisputable source for this specious accusation, she cited none other than the New York Times , America's greatest newspaper, which she and the rest of the right constantly deride as a biased, bigoted mouthpiece of the liberal left.

Apparently, Governor Palin didn't read the article in its entirety, because the exhaustive piece concluded that Obama and William Ayers, who was a member of a violent radical group opposed to the Vietnam War, are acquaintances at best, and that Ayers became a respected professor of education after his radical youth.

In a media week when, aside from the more mundane news that the American economy is collapsing, it was all Palin, all the time, the best description of Sarah Palin's utter cluelessness about anything outside her own small, provincial Northern Exposure existence came from a caller to a talk radio show, albeit a show not typical of the usual American talk radio fare.

National Public Radio's " On Point " is one of the more thoughtful call-in shows in America, and one caller told host Tom Ashbrook that after listening to the debate she had come to the conclusion that Sarah Palin is George Bush in a skirt.

No doubt, Governor Palin would find comfort in her belief that anyone who listens to NPR is a God-hatin', Obama-lovin' commie.

Kevin Cullen, who will be writing a weekly media column through the elections, is a columnist for the Boston Globe.

The same SMEARS that these Idiots are putting on Ayers and Rev. Wright are the same ones they put on Obama(even if by assoication) and it just looks silly whenever Obama speaks.

The knock we have on McCain and Palin(Rove, Keating, Bush,Charles Manson,Timothy McVie) is that we aren't using innuendo and rumor and SMEAR we are addressing stuff they have ACTUALLY DONE, things they ACTUALLY SAY and things they ACTUALLY DID!

I was not Obama's supporter but after 2nd debate I was extremely disappointed in McCain. He keeps telling us he is going to create jobs. How? Nuclear plants? It is not very much. In 2004 we heard that globalization actually would bring the jobs. Where they are? Nothing. We have even more outsourcing. Ok, less corp. taxes. Good. But will it helps? American companies compete with foreign companies that also have small taxes, cheap labor, less environmental restrictions and support from their governments. I don't believe that without reconsideration of the free trades agreements tax cut will bring jobs home. We will make live of the big corporation executives little sweeter and that's it. Without jobs in America we can't solve the other problems including the financial crises. Though I do like the idea of tax cut for those corporations that are keeping jobs in America.

Even medical care. Gosh, I am strongly against socialized medicine. But again McCain came up with a scheme that actually will be better for the medical insurance that don't care about people. My husband had HMO and he was not happy with it at all. My PPO is pretty good and I totally happy with it. But I don't want to let insurance to save money on me by having less obligations. Yes, I would like to have choice and it looks like Obama does not take away that opportunity from me. I don't need those McCain's offers, if you can't do better just leave the medicine as it is.

And about sacrifice. I red your lips, Senator McCain. You are going to sacrifice science and pay more to executives that will outsource more American jobs and come up with more financial pyramide schemes. The only source of American jobs so far left is actually new technologies that need investments before they could give us new production and new jobs. And Obama obviously understands that. Not sure about McCain.

I am definitely lean toward Obama now after the debates.

Barney Frank (Democrat) has been in Congress since 1981. He is the Chairman of the Financial Services Committee. GET IT! This is the committee that is supposed to oversee the FINANCIAL SERVICES that are provided to the public (i.e. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Wall Street loan sharks).

THE DEMOCRAT PARTY ALSO HAS THE MAJORITY votes IN both houses in Washington:

[Congress] D=230, R=205

[Senate] D=55, R=45

So, can someone please tell me how the Democrats and NObama can feed the public the untruth that this economic fiscal disaster is the fault of the Republicans?

I already have enough problems staying on top of my car insurance. With insurance companies making me waste my time with unnecessary calls to keep my rate competitive. And McCain want's me to have to deal with my own health insurance??? Everybody I know that has to do it (self-employed) pays more than my employer pays for me, for less coverage. No individual family has the leverage that a company has. I feel for them, but let's not ruin it for everybody.

Nice try Dan Balz. But it's just a fantasy of yours. John Mccain wins in glory and leads our country to victory against the muslims. A fantasy and nothing more. John McCain disagrees with most Americans on the war. He beleives it is destiny to lead us to glory, in a war that cannot be one with his vision. Keep dreaming Dan Balz. Pray to God that McCain can fufill his destiny. If it happens, you can watch in terror as our cities burn. He wants war, and that's all.

MEDICAL DISCLOSURE:

Senator John McCain has granted access to more than 2,500 pages of medical records, in 1999 and 2008, and a recent report, including all medications from a team of doctors at the Mayo Clinic who has been treating him for years.

NObama released in May, a one-page letter from his primary care doctor, who he had not seen in 18 months

Friends???

McCain displayed little of Hope's valor. Although he would soon regale The New York Times with tales of the heroism of the brave enlisted men who "stayed to help the pilots fight the fire," McCain took no part in dousing the flames himself. After going belowdecks and briefly helping sailors who were frantically trying to unload bombs from an elevator to the flight deck, McCain retreated to the safety of the "ready room," where off-duty pilots spent their noncombat hours talking trash and playing poker. There, McCain watched the conflagration unfold on the room's closed-circuit television — bearing distant witness to the valiant self-sacrifice of others who died trying to save the ship, pushing jets into the sea to keep their bombs from exploding on deck.

As the ship burned, McCain took a moment to mourn his misfortune; his combat career appeared to be going up in smoke. "This distressed me considerably," he recalls in Faith of My Fathers. "I feared my ambitions were among the casualties in the calamity that had claimed the Forrestal."

The fire blazed late into the night. The following morning, while oxygen-masked rescue workers toiled to recover bodies from the lower decks, McCain was making fast friends with R.W. "Johnny" Apple of The New York Times, who had arrived by helicopter to cover the deadliest Naval calamity since the Second World War. The son of admiralty surviving a near-death experience certainly made for good copy, and McCain colorfully recounted how he had saved his skin. But when Apple and other reporters left the ship, the story took an even stranger turn: McCain left with them. As the heroic crew of the Forrestal mourned its fallen brothers and the broken ship limped toward the Philippines for repairs, McCain zipped off to Saigon for what he recalls as "some welcome R&R."

This last person I would want as a friend,
he left his fellow service men behind on a burning ship...Becasue his daddy would
protect him...

Who is going to protect us from McCain if McCain becomes President.

The Republican campaign and Sarah Palin are no longer acting in a responsible manner. Inciting a crowd with 'codewords' and other innuendos and lies isn't worthy of being called a presidential campaign event. It is simply and plainly a campaign of hate.

There is no obligation for the press to cover hate mongering under some idea of 'fairness' in reporting.

McCain and Palin must stop encouraging potential attacks on Obama.

Their speeches are going well beyond their First Amendment rights into the realm of incitement of violence.

What they are doing is DANGEROUS.

The Nazi tone of Palin's rallies are UNPATRIOTIC.

rodhug1,

Hawley-Smoot originated in Congress (passed by Hoover). The reference to FDR "prolonging the recession" due to his policies is the typically Republican revisionist nonsense to discredit FDR as a president that has been going on since Reagan. Facts are much better when creating an argument.

Now, Barack Obama never mentioned a policy of raising tariffs. Nor did he mention raising taxes - the majority of Americans will receive a tax cut. The reason why Americans cannot get a more substantial tax cut is that the previous administration has come out at the end of a boom period with a budget deficit - how is that possible?
Here's why - the Republican Party is a lost cause worshipping the golden calf of extreme economic liberalism. Its policies are overly ideological and entirely devoid of issues - based political consideration. Their vacuous policies and election winning tactics are based around two human elements - Fear (i.e. the dirt slinging - Barack Obama has made his position towards terrorism abundantly clear - how does any association with Ayres change that? Do you think Obama is a terrorist sympathiser? Of course he isn't!) and Self Righteousness (i.e. Moral superiority and forced Moral compliance, Abortion, same sex relationships, etc. - no true christian would inflict moral codes on their fellow citizens, it would make them akin to the Pharisees).
So, in a nutshell, the Republicans blinded neo conservative stance has made them deservedly unfit to govern. You can play the lying and cheating game for as long as you like trying to get McCain into office, but the truth of the matter is that the Republican Parties current ideological line stinks, and the majority of America are now wisening up to the fact.

Soon after McCain hit the ground in Hanoi, the code went out the window. "I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital," he later admitted pleading with his captors. McCain now insists the offer was a bluff, designed to fool the enemy into giving him medical treatment. In fact, his wounds were attended to only after the North Vietnamese discovered that his father was a Navy admiral. What has never been disclosed is the manner in which they found out: McCain told them. According to Dramesi, one of the few POWs who remained silent under years of torture, McCain tried to justify his behavior while they were still prisoners. "I had to tell them," he insisted to Dramesi, "or I would have died in bed."

But the other actions that the Senator has taken in the 40 years since his capitivity have to stand by themselves. He has tried, but he can't make that ordeal as a young man the focal point on why the American voter should vote for him.

"I believe it is time to portray to the entire nation the man, with all the magic of his personality, all the mysterious genius and irresistible power of his personality. There is probably no one left on the planet who does not know him as a statesman and as a remarkable popular leader. Only a few, however, have the pleasure of seeing him as a man each day from close up, to experience him, and as I might add, to come as a result to a deeper understanding and love for him. These few wonder how it is possible that a man who only three years ago was opposed by half of the nation stands today above any doubt and every criticism. HE is the man of fate, who has the calling to save the nation from terrible internal conflict and shameful foreign disgrace, to lead it to longed-for freedom.

That one man has captured the hearts of the whole nation, despite the sometimes difficult and unpopular decisions he had to make, is perhaps the deepest, most amazing secret of our age. It cannot be explained only by his accomplishments, for it is just those who have had to make the heaviest sacrifices for him and for national reconstruction, indeed who must still bring them, who have sensed his mission in the deepest and most joyful way. An Unoriginal Question About William C. Ayers: Chicago Tribune columnist Steve Chapman in the New York Times said the following:
"If John McCain had a long association with a guy who'd bombed abortion clinics, I don't think people would say, 'That's ancient history.' "

What if McCain had launched his political career in the living room of a former abortion clinic bomber who is now a respected professor at, say, a Christian college, who is unrepentant in his previous actions, but never charged with a crime, and was now pursuing a different avenue for his views ...

What if he'd given McCain a $200 campaign contribution eight years ago, and they'd served on a board together, and were "friendly" though they hadn't spoken in a while, and McCain had condemned his previous actions and didn't know him back then ...

What if right now McCain were ahead with a Republican wind blowing, and Obama were behind? What if Obama started attacking McCain about this guy? How would it look to you? How would the media react? And would it be a fair hit?

Watch the Hannity's America documentary which proves Sen. Obama had a closer relationship with the terror master than he admits.

*********PALIN: PROOF OBAMA IS A SAUDI PUPPET******

OBAMA'S MOST GUARDED SECRET: WHO PAID OBAMA'S TUITION? WHY OBAMA HAS NO OUTSTANDING STUDENT LOANS?

Around 1979 Obama started college at Occidental in California. He is very open about his two years at Occidental, he tried all kinds of drugs and was wasting his time but, even though he had a brilliant mind, did not apply himself to his studies. During this time he had two roommates, Muhammad Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid, both from Pakistan. In the summer of 1981 after his second year in college, he made a 'round the world' trip. Stopping to see his mother in Indonesia, next Hyderabad in India, three weeks in Karachi, Pakistan where he stayed with his roommates family. Then off to Africa to visit his fathers family. Where Did He Get The Money For This Trip?
When he came back he started school at Columbia University in New York. Do you know what the tuition is at Columbia? Its Not cheap! to say the least. Where Did He Get The Money For Tuition?
Student Loans? Maybe BUT where are the Loans then?

Saudi Prince Waleed Bin Taleed, paid Obama's trip and Tuition. This is a very guarded secret that Obama refuses to talk about.

After Columbia he went to Chicago to work as a Community Organizer for $12,000 a year. Why Chicago? Why not New York? He was already living in New York.
--------
The Saudi Prince ordered Obama to take charge of ACORN and the election fraud machinery that they were organizing there.
----------
Obama soon entered Harvard Law School. Do you have any idea what tuition is for Harvard Law School? Where Did He Get The Money?????

Prince Alwaleed Bin Taleed paid Obama's tuition again. Now the Saudis own Obama.

In 2005 Obama purchased a new home in the Kenwood District of Chicago for $1.65 million. Just down the street from Louis Farrakahns' Home, and very near the home of William Ayers. With all those student loans - Where Did He Get The Money For The Property???
On the same day Antoin Rezko's wife, Rita, purchased the adjoining empty lot for full price.
The London Times reported that Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi-born billionaire loaned Rezko $3.5 million three weeks before Obamas new home was purchased. Obama met with Nadhmi Auchi many times with Rezko.

The Saudi Prince and Muslims own Obama, he's just a Saudi puppet.

Nothing demonstrates McCain's commitment to an oil-based foreign policy--and and oil-based economy--more than his support for the war. Though his selection of Palin is also quite relevant: at the convention Palin said she 'stood up to oil interests' followed by "My sister Heather and her husband have just built a service station that's now opened for business"[seriously]--she was in the industry, her husband is in the industry, and consider her quote, "God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built" I don't think ya can stand up to the oil industry while announcing that the furtherance of their agenda is god's will.

On Wednesday morning, John McCain’s campaign released a list of 100 former ambassadors endorsing the GOP presidential nominee.

Second on the list, though her name is misspelled, is Leonore Annenberg, currently the president and chairman of the Annenberg Foundation and widow of ambassador and philanthropist Walter Annenberg. Ms. Annenberg was herself the “chief of protocol” at the State Department under President Reagan.

If the last name sounds familiar, it’s because it also graces the name of the Chicago education board where Barack Obama and William Ayers sat in the room six times together. (Huffington Post) Iguess that makes John McCain pally with those who are closely associated with terrorists.

Herbert W Hoover made a recession into a depression by sighing the Smoot Hawley Act, which raised tariffs. FDR prolonged the depression by raising taxes on small business, such that thousands failed.

Herbert Wouldbe Obama wants to repeat the mistakes of both of the above.

The post by Peter Principle is an example of Obama support quality.

Posted by: rodhug1 | October 8, 2008 7:31 PM | Report abuse

let's sum up Obama's Chicago connections. His chief financial supporter was Tony Rezko, now on his way to federal prison. His spiritual advisor and mentor was the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, of "God damn America" fame. And the guy who got him his only administrative job and put him in charge of doling out $50 million is Ayers, a terrorist who was a domestic Osama bin Laden in his youth.

Even apart from the details of the Obama-Ayers connection, two key points emerge:

-- Obama lied and misled the American people in his description of his relationship with Ayers as casual and arm's length; and

-- Obama was consciously guided by Ayers' radical philosophy, rooted in the teachings of leftist Saul Alinksy, in his distribution of ACA grant funds.

Since Obama is asking us to let him direct education spending by the federal government and wants us to trust his veracity, these are difficulties he will have to explain in order to get the votes to win.

Now that Obama is comfortably ahead in the polls, attention will understandably shift to him. We will want to know what kind of president he would make. The fact that, within the past 10 years he participated in a radical program of political education conceptualized by an admitted radical terrorist offers no reassurance.

Why did Obama put up with Ayers? Because he got a big job and $50 million of patronage to distribute to his friends and supporters in Chicago. Why did he hang out with Wright? Because he was new in town, having grown up in Hawaii and Indonesia and having been educated at Columbia and Harvard, and needed all the local introductions he could get to jumpstart his political career. Why was he so close to Rezko? Because he funded Obama's campaigns and helped him buy a house for $300,000 less than he otherwise would have had to pay.

Not a good recommendation for a president.

Oh, and I almost forgot....ACORN!

After referring to the various proposals that comprise his domestic policy agenda, John McCain offered an absolute head-scratcher of a line during a campaign speech on Wednesday.

“Across this country this is the agenda I have set before my fellow prisoners,” he declared. In the prepared remarks he was supposed to say “fellow citizens.”

The remark came during the Senator’s campaign stop in Pennsylvania in what was already a controversial appearance. An hour before McCain took the stage, an introductory speaker revved up the crowd by referring to Barack “Hussein” Obama twice. McCain’s campaign has distanced themselves from the remark.

@celested9

Obama's grandmother was not "upper middle class." She never went to college, and rose to become a vice president of a small bank by starting at the secretarial level. He went to a private high school on scholarship. They lived in an apartment in Honolulu.

They were never "poor," but there were times when they -- especially his mother -- were broke.

But yeah, that kind of modest upward mobility was easier to manage in the 1970's, before the Reagan Revolution.

Several pundits lament that the debate was boring. They did not get any juicy fireworks. But they did get substance from McCain and creative gobbledygook from Obama, intended to mask his positions. With a few exceptions McCain was a little uncoordinated in his presentations. Still, it was clear enough that Obama is for big spending, just the wrong medicine at this time; and McCain is for spending reductions, just the right medicine.

So who is the economics wizard and who is the novice?

Mc Cain is sullying his own name, regardless of the outcome of the election. He's hitting a new low in mud slinging away from the issues personally and in his offical campaign. Most, not all of it by proxies or as part of an ad, but some direct.

_The worst thing, using his wife, is a new low_.

I supported him in 2000, it appears all he learned that year is that the low road is the road to the Presidency, when Bush minions underhandedly accused him of fathering an illegimate black child. He's responded to that by hiring a Bush campaign crew of insiders.

He is a disgrace...I am ashamed.

One prediction. He is a desperate man, with a desperate staff. I believe, he will find some ugly code words to inject race more directly into the campaign before it's over.

"Very few seem to understand the role of Robert Rubin, Clinton's Treasury Secretary, who first initiated the wonderful idea of robbing from the Social Security "surplus," adding it to the Treasury's balance sheet, and putting IOU's into the Social Security fund. (Remember Al Gore's Social Security "lock-box"? This is what he was referring to.) This accounting sleight-of-hand created a huge liquidity surplus, which lead to the "roaring 90's" stock market and dot com bubble. AND the subsequent crash, which Bush inherited."

This is not exactly true, though I applaud the author's approach to the problem as a systemic problem instead of an issue with one party and not the other. The t-bills held by social security are a surplus in social security, but a budget deficit in the general budget. Notwithstanding the dubious nature of the government holding its own debt, but it not accounted for as a surplus, it is treated as any other debt.

However, this does not make it a good idea. Social Security would best be invested in trust for massive improvements on return in just about any other investment. In essence, the US government owes the social security system around 2 trillion dollar. Again, a dubious scheme, but the author is not technically correct.

Another point the author made is that deregulation was not responsible for this mess. Deregulation has a role in the current financial crisis. Housing prices increase as demand for houses increase. As people cannot actually afford many of the houses they already have, they were loaned more money than they should have been loaned. No bank interested in long term stability would have done this and deregulation of loan contracts does play a role here. It is not the end-all be-all of the problem, but it certain is not a non-issue.

McCain is not who you think he is. He is a spoiled child who throws a tantrum when he does not get his way and attacks people personally with no regard for anyone but himself. He is running a nastier more base campaign then the one Rove ran against him in SC 2000. Our current political system is broken, and it is OUR fault. It is our fault because we the people do not take the time to educate ourselves (I mean REALLY educate ourselves with independent, in-depth research).

Here's the funny thing about the economy: no one seems to consider that it could actually BE MUCH WORSE right now.

Very few seem to understand the role of Robert Rubin, Clinton's Treasury Secretary, who first initiated the wonderful idea of robbing from the Social Security "surplus," adding it to the Treasury's balance sheet, and putting IOU's into the Social Security fund. (Remember Al Gore's Social Security "lock-box"? This is what he was referring to.) This accounting sleight-of-hand created a huge liquidity surplus, which lead to the "roaring 90's" stock market and dot com bubble. AND the subsequent crash, which Bush inherited.

In 2000, the NASDAQ crashed worse than the Dow of 1929 -- yet we got no Great Depression from 2001-present.

Few seem to know (as Warren Buffet does) that the problems we're experiencing are not from "deregulation." (Read Buffet's comments here: http://newmarksdoor.typepad.com/mainblog/2008/10/if-you-think-st.html )

Few of the comments I read seem to have any grasp of anything at all. It's all about Ayers and neoCONs. Few understand how we got here. They listen to any damn-fool idea the politicians throw out there ("We're gonna cut/raise taxes! We're gonna fund solar power! We're gonna buy up mortgages!") and they think, "Yeah, that sounds good to me. Imma go back to watching TV now."

Pubbies and Dems alike, if you want to save this country, EDUCATE YOURSELVES AND LEARN YOUR HISTORY. The politicians got us into this mess *with our help*. We get "more of the same" with BOTH of the major candidates.

We need a political revolution to save this country.

Obama is not a revolution, he is not a saviour -- he is hard-core establishment and more of the same. Anyone who believes otherwise is simply fooling themselves, and has only to look at his voting record for a reality check.

McCain is a maverick only in the sense that he's essetially a Democrat. That doesn't make him a maverick, it makes him more of the same.

We need to revolt against BOTH major parties. Clinton/Bush got us here. Obama/McCain will continue the destruction. Get away from the partisan drivel -- go out and educate yourselves.

I am not afraid to vote Obama ... with him in the White House I am hoping that there will be a lot of smart, thoughtful and compassionate people around him. Was that not we hoped for when in 2000 GW promised to be the Compassionate Conservative? Now his hidden trust ... all oil money with Cheney overflows with the price per barrel of oil now versus then. No speaking tours for GW ... probably the first President in the history of the Republic that is filthy rich when he leaves office. Thanks George ... No 3rd term for you or John.

There are three basic rules for candidates with relatively even chances to win:
1. Get organized early in as many places as possible.
2.Peak at the right time.
3. Get lucky, either by outside events or by a mistake made by the opposition.
Rule 3 often makes rule two work. Right now I would give Obama an up for sure on one and a probable on two. Three is something still undecided.

McCain tried something to see if it works: the home mortgage purchase plan. First problem for McCain is that such plan is already in the bailout legislation just enacted. The second problem is that McCain's qualifications include having made a down payment and verified income qualification at the time of the mortgage application.

Neither of these qualification exist for many homeowners now facing foreclosure. So, who does the "McCain" benefit? A select few who most likely can afford to stay with their existing mortgages.

A third problem is that Senator Clinton proposed this kind of program earlier this year.

What we have is just another con game from McCain. And, we have another column from Balz that is nothing more than a recital of the McCain campaign talking points following last nights "debate."

Wouldn't it have been better to talk about a more serious matter such as Palin provoking base reactions from her audiences that included someone calling Obama a terrorist but someone else how apparently shouted out "kill him."

Wouldn't it have better to talk about another more serious matter such as McCain's racist overtones during last nights debate or his schizophrenic wandering around the stage or his failure of grace to shake Obama's hand at the end or his quick departure from the scene.

All we have from Balz is regurgitation of McCain campaign talking points.

Cool pillow, you are right to suggest that McCain is a child of privilege who has been feeding at the public trough for 70 years. And he's been bringing his fat cat friends to feed with him. He employs over 150 professional lobbyists on his campaign staff including his campaign manager who has been providing the deregulating access of McCain to Fannie and Freddie.

Since there is nothing positive about McCain's campaign but the idea of electing Obama is clearly not what we want, what should people like us do? Well, Obama's- um well, you know, so let's not challenge McCain on his questionable employees, let's go after Barack because he's- well- let's be charitable, he's the "other". Let's smear Obama- just the way you did.

Let's lie about his position on abortion, gun control and religion. Let's call attention to his name and suggest that there is something not quite American about him.

Let's misrepresent his association with Ayers. We could even go further and actually misrepresent Ayers, who did committ bad acts, but we can lie about why he did it and fail to fully discuss what he did in the context of those times, and just smear him.

We could even lie and say that Ayers picked Obama. We know that isn't true, but what the hell. We could talk like we know what we are saying and distort and mislead our readers. Hannity does it, why not us? We could then bring up a list of people from Obama's past and tar Barack with a guilt by association with people whose ties to Barack are either inconsequential or non existant.

The truth doesn't matter- we support McCain and Palin, and they will be proud of us from trying to keep that- you know, from the White House. I'm on board- count me in- just let me get my brownshirt.

Let's make sure that we stay focused on the real issues this election year.

The last election (2004) the citizens of this country were led down the 'fear' trail (followed by the smear campaign) by the Bush administration.

I think we can all agree that this tactic is a form of ‘home grown’ terrorism by the McCain campaign.

Stayed focused on real issues:

the economy
energy
the wars
universal health care
education
etc..

The GOP didn't do us any favors last time by using these same tactics to get Bush elected for a 2nd term.

With Balz having given up any pretense of objectivity, can he please be described as a conservative columnist? This guy doesn't even mask the fact that he's in the tank for McCain. Every column is about how McCain can "turn it around," or how, despite the growing body of evidence to the contrary, he's not out of it ...

Now, after that dreadful debate performance, we get this nonsense about McCain's "steely resolve." What a joke.

"Why in the world was Barack Obama still communicating on the phone or via email with Bill Ayers up until 2005"

Probably because they were both serving on the Board of the Annenberg Foundation. The President of which is Leonore Annenberg. Who is a major contributor to McCain's campaign, despite the fact that she hired Ayers to be on the board of her foundation.

You could look it up, instead of making it up.

"He [Obama] said they have not spoken by phone or exchanged e-mail messages since Mr. Obama began serving in the United States Senate in January 2005" (New York Times, 10/3)

Why in the world was Barack Obama still communicating on the phone or via email with Bill Ayers up until 2005 — when in 2001 Ayers gave widely publicized interviews claiming he had no regrets about the bombing, indeed regretted that he had not done enough, and did not necessarily have any remorse either about his Weathermen career?

Ponder that: the possible next President of the United States, well after 9/11 and in the climate of hourly worry over terrorism here at home, was still friendly and communicating with an associate that had to abandon his book tour due to popular outcry, and was widely quoted as absolutely unrepentant about his terrorism. That is a damning indictment of his judgement — among other things — and it is no "smear" to raise the issue.

Indeed, there is a disturbing pattern here. Obama's once-close radical Chicago associates are never jettisoned out of principle, but only at the 11th-hour when they became impediments to Obama's political career. Thus Wright is defended throughout his racist rantings, until he makes the unfortunate decision of bringing that hatred to DC's elite nexus at the National Press Club — and only then is immediately dropped, as Obama resigns from Trinity Church. Ditto Ayers. What made Obama cease communciations with Ayers was not the latter's radicalism (indeed Obama facilitated it by serving with Ayers to dispense millions to questionable organizations), nor even Ayers' boasts in 2001 of having no regrets about trying to blow up government buildings. Instead, 2005 coincides with Obama's ascension to the Senate and the plan to begin running for the Presidency — and thus Ayers, like Wright later, became expendable. Ditto Rezko, Pfleger et al.

Irish-American and Harvard Law Scholar Barack Obama grew up poor, raised by his Irish-American single white mother and Irish-American white working class maternal grand parents

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One more time and please pay attention.

Obama went to live with his upper middle class grandparents. His grandmother, whom none of us has seen this election season, was a bank VP.

Cut out the poor stuff. Also, when his mother was on food stamps, he was not with her.

OK?

"McCain's answer in the debate was a $300 [billion] plan to stabilize the housing market by buying up and renegotiating bad mortgages."

McCain doesn't understand that these mortgages have been securitized--sliced up into little pieces and repackaged as securities and sold off all over the place. It is impossible to reconstruct them; it is impossible to buy them as mortgages. His plan makes no sense.

Bottom line for me: I do not trust McCain's judgment on anything. His healthcare plan is a disaster. Think insurance is complicated now? We'll get much less for more $. The homeowner buyback is completely unworkable in the form he's proposed. Hardly anyone eligible, and the rest left out, including those of use who are paying our negative equity loans on time. Palin is really the best example of poor judgment though. Put her back in the closet before she incites radical rightwing terrorism. All she needs is a little mustache above her lipstick. Unbelievable.

Fear and Loathing in the Town Hall: A Predictive Fantasy

(The camera looks at the hall from above, into the hall, from the POV of the stage. Red meat has been hung from the walls and rafters, along with dollar bills which, upon closer inspection, are prop money.

The crowd is seated. They are strangely quiet. Their manner is that between those who are waiting for their instructions, post-op surgical recoverees, and post-war survivors. They are slightly slumped, in the same posture.

The candidates enter from opposite sides of the rear of the stage and walk to their podiums. The crowd rises as one and cheers with a loud, aggressive fervor reflective of their desperation.

Obama is standing tall in stride, looking a bit overcome by the experience, although genuine. McCain is smiling--his cheerful public grimace, although there is some genuine pleasure. His eyes have the slightest glaze of a gradually oncoming fog.)

MODERATOR: Tonight is a different format--one where you, the public, can ask your questions directly to the candidates. None of the questions have been screened in advance, and the candidates have been given no advance notice of what the questions, or who the questioners, might be. And with that, we begin. Our first question:

CITIZEN 1: My name is Jan, I'm from Murfreesboro? I've been watching the news, and I'm scared. I can't say that I've listened much about the stock market before? But I know that it's going down, and that's bad. I don't know what's going to happen to my job, or my house, or my kids. My question is for Mr. McCain? What will you do to help us understand what is going on, and to make it clear just what you will do about it?

(Crowd applauds vigorously as Jan sits down with a bit of embarrassment).

MCCAIN: (Holding the top of the rostrum with both hands and smiling): Well, first, I want to welcome each of you here tonight. You know, I know what each of you are feeling. I think that each of you must be scared--as I am, of not verifying myself in my father's and my grandfather's eyes. But, that's not so important today--or, at least saying it isn't. What is most important is to appear that I understand an economy that just months ago I said that I had little understanding of at all. I want to win. I need it, frankly, as a way of overcoming my own personal horrors and demons, of overcoming the anger that was bestowed and thrust, unwillingly, upon me. And that's why I'm still willing, even as the sharpest edges of mental function fade, to propel myself through this mass of insult. I understand how to respond to insult. With anger. And impulse. And that's what I'll bring to the White House, come January of 2009.

(Crowd applauds vigorously)

MODERATOR: The next question is for Senator Obama.

CITIZEN 2: Thanks. My name is Ross, from Shreveport. First-time caller, long-time listener. My question is: Senator Obama, it's not an error that you were given the middle name "Barack". We know that that is the same name of the murderous. Communist leader of Iran--and that's no accident. (A slight murmur from the crowd. The moderator looks vaguely stunned, but does not interrupt). Now, when you were going to Russia, with Bill Ayers, and dodging the draft--just like William Jefferson Clinton--(speaking more quickly now, more aggressively, turning to the crowd)--why weren't you here at home, saving our banks from the Liberals and the Socialists who want to take our money away from us and just give it to the terrorists?

SARAH PALIN: (Poking her head out from the wings, with a big smile): You betcha'!

(She withdraws).

OBAMA: Well. First of all, I also want to welcome you all here tonight. You know, I know that this is a difficult time. Many of you are worried about your jobs, your families, your homes. There are times that test a man's soul, and every woman's as well. And I know that this may be one of those times. I can understand why you would be frightened, even angry at what this nation has done. But we are a nation that has risen up in adversity even in the best of times, we found our strength, and honor, and courage, our ability to work as one, when faced with the most difficult situations. And I want to call on each of you, in that spirit of patriotic sacrifice, to join with me in that effort in the days ahead.

(Silence. Then applause, as the recognition of actual thought begins to spread through the crowd. It swells, and finally, subsides).

MODERATOR: The next question is for Senator McCain.

CITIZEN 3 (He is a man who appears to be in his early 40's wearing blue jeans that are stiff and obviously brand-new. They are perfectly creased. He is wearing a tight fitting, also obviously new T-Shirt that says "Average American...And Black With Rage!" beneath which is an American flag. He is wearing black wing-tip shoes. ). Senator McCain, I'm just an average American, just an average Joe, just your Average Joe-Sixpack (Blackberry begins ringing)...Oh...
excuse me...just...a...sec...my boss's phone...(whispering tensely into phone:) "No...I said sell. Sell. Yes, the entire portfolio. No, not Ghanan timber, for god's sake, gold, the lot of it. Jesus H....(tucks Blackberry back into pants pocket and then readjusts his stance to that of average Joe, slumping to one side again and changing his voice back to it's original tenor). Like I said, just an average Joe Sixpack. And I'm wonderin'. I heard what Mr. Hussein just said about "rising up", and I'm wonderin' if that's exactly what he wants to do! Oh, sure, he wants us to band together to rise up--where have we heard that before? Socialists! That's what they do! (crowd begins to murmur, and in the rising heat, the smell of the fresh meat begins to waft faintly through the hall). Rise up! That's what he wants to do! Well, we need to rise up! Against those kind of Socialist, Communist, Fascist, Atheist, Marxist policies! (the crowd is talking, some nodding their heads). And so what I want to ask you, Sen. McCain (crowd quiets), as an average everyday American, is this: What is it like, being a fighter pilot and all, when you know that Barack Hussein was out there, palling around with his Communist friends?

MCCAIN: Well, my friend--and by that, I mean that all of you are my friends--I'm glad you asked. Not everyone has had the luxury of gaining an education merely on the basis of their own talent, or the opportunity to travel the world learning how to be separate from important family members without their having significant pull, or to be able to experience the variety of foods that one has the chance to consume when they are paid for by the State. And, I can say that, in that way, I haven't been quiet as lucky. But I will say this--I will not look such fortune in the face and say: 'Fine, I'll work on education with the Bill Ayers of this world', "I'll be at the top of my class at Harvard", when I can be down, down there with you at the bottom! I know what it's like to be at the bottom when I've had all the opportunities--and I want to share that experience with those of you who have had none. You're angry. I'm angry. We have that in common. Let's be angry together, satisfied that, for another for four years, we've put those who have the arrogance to think for extended periods in their place, content in knowing that we're right--even if we're wrong.

CITIZEN 4: Hiya. My name is George, from Midland, altho' some would say Kennebunkport, heh, heh. I have a question for ya, John, and it's this. Listen: I'm goin' to be out of a job soon. Oil futures aren't lookin' that good, and I've got to tell ya', I didn't have too much luck there in the first place. So I'd like to ask ya, one flyin' man to another--what do you think I oughta do?

PALIN: (emerges from wings with purposeful strides to McCain's podium): I've got to take this one, John. Mr. Bush, if you can't figure out what you want to do after you leave and we move in, take a little time off, and then you come right up to Alaska. They love hunting just like you--and you can fly, you can learn to do it from a plane! The pipeline's big enough for any number of mistakes. So you come up here when you're finished--we've got plenty of bars with plenty of bowls of nuts and plenty of televisions right on Wasiila Main street--we'll take care of you right!

(Bush smiles and sits, crowd applauds, Palin, smiling and waving, exits).

CITIZEN 5: Well, look. This is a serious question. I'm John, from Carpenter. It's for both of you. I've got two kids, 4 and 6, a boy and a girl--so sweet. You know. My wife, she was working for the WaMu branch, center of town. It's closing next week. She's been looking in the ads, the newspapers, online--nothing. It's all she can do to keep a smile on her face for the kids. Myself, I built a commerical trucking business from the ground up. Sixteen years. Sweat everyday, grease on my hands, I can never get it out. We were never rich, but I made a good living. I didn't know about investing--who does, you're not born with it! Anyway, I went to an investment advisor, it seemed like the safe thing to do, protect the kids, plan for the future, not use my own dumb head (smiles). Well, he was so smart, and he was so sure, and he had it all planned out. And it looked so impressive on paper. Now--all of a sudden--it's gone. Everything is changing. It's changing so quickly. It seems like nobody--nobody knew. Not even the people who were supposed to! Everybody was talkin', makin noise, thinkin' of one thing: Themselves, themselves, themselves. Never worrying to think about someone else, about the future, about the next moment.

Well, now the next moment is here. And I wanna know--what are the two of you really going to do about it?

(The room is quiet as his last word echoes in the hall. The raw meat is rocking, slowly in the air, and the paper bills are gently fluttering). You can see Palin in profile, standing in the wings, holding her chin in her hand. The two candidates stare straight ahead, holding the podium. They are silent).

Its the fact that Senator McCain is the problem and not the fix!

McCain can mobilize the devil in hell and it wouldn’t change his voting record or the fact that his neo-conservative ideology has caused the moral and financial decline of our nation!

Yet between the two parties its obvious were most of the blame/lack to regulate can be pointed to! The GOP!
And during this pivotal time what senator with a 26-year record never once voted for any form of regulation or oversight of Americas finacial culture?

What senator advocated and pushed hard for war in Iraq when intelligence has shown that the reasons for war (WMDs) are non-existent!

It appears that Mccain never met a war he didnt like! Mccain said it himself, "I will slash/freeze all economic spending except for the military and the pentagon..."

Look up the definition of fascist! You will find Mccain and his theology re-defined!

It is a normal political move. I pray to God that we don't get Barrack Hussein Obama as President. It could lead to race riots like we have never seen in this country. Palin/McCain just doesn't have what it takes to win. All the old repub dog whistles like 'exotic' and 'dangerous' are just not fooling anybody anymore. Except that is, the rapid fundamentalist crowd which thrives on it.

Conservatives have been running the show since Reagan, and that includes the Clinton administration. Dubya and the current disasters are simply the ripe fruit of that harvest.

McCain no doubt has 'steely resolve." So did, no doubt, the Captain of the Titanic as she sank beneath the frigid waves of the North Atlantic.

While I completely agree with Dan's analysis of the two debates and the spot McCain is in currently, I really don't buy the optimism of his campaign. His campaign's polling analysis is off substantially. Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin will all be carried by Obama by at least 5 points each. Those states are gone for McCain.

Obama is going to carry all states won by Kerry or Gore, which gives him 264 electoral votes, meaning he needs only one of Colorado, Ohio, Virginia, and Florida. McCain needs to carry all those, while also holding North Carolina, Nevada, Indiana and Missouri---all of which are now tossups. Colorado, Ohio and Virginia are all currently leaning slightly to Obama, so McCain winning all three of these would be very surprising.

Barring some major events to move the focus of the campaign away from the economy where McCain is extremely weak, this election is over. Please don't try to tell us it is a close race when we know it is not. All year long, media analysts kept saying the race was close when it shouldn't be, that this should be a Democratic easy victory due to the economy and the failed Bush Presidency. Now when it's becoming apparent that the election is not really close, the media seems fixed upon trying to get us to believe it's close when it's not.

It is going to be a comfortable Democratic victory across-the-board, perhaps a landslide in Electoral Votes at the Presidential level, maybe a landslide in the Senate. Count on Obama to keep pounding on the "failed economic philosophy" argument. That is the argument that can be used post-election to argue for a mandate for substantial programmatic change.

If Obama wins by wide margins in both popular and electoral vote while emphasizing the "failed economic philosophy of the past 28 years argument" and Democrats win at the Senate and Congressional levels, with Obama conceivably having coattails or effecting necessary record turnouts down-ballot as in the North Carolina, Oregon and Minnesota Senate races, he will be in post-election position to argue he has a won a MANDATE FOR CHANGE. This will be very important in the early days of governing and trying to pass legislation.

McCain will Win

Every crisis, including the Obama Depression of 2008 will help McCain as Americans realize how much worse the uSA would be if Obama is in the Oval Office.

Jus the POSSIBILITY that Obama could actually win has plunged the world into the worst Depression in 100 years.

The OBAMA DEPRESSION OF 2008.

Saying that John McCain has no honor is a pretty ignorant remark.

While I don't support either candidate, I do support common sense and that statement contains none.

McCain may or may not be the best candidate for pres. but if there is one qualification he embodies it is that of honor and selfless service.

If I had to guess I'd say xconservative has never been in a situation to observe true honor or sacrifice. I just hope xcon realizes it is b/c of the honor, valor and selfless sacrifice of men like John McCain and our military that he is able to post mindless crap on websites.

P.S. If any of you think your going to hear the truth @ a Presidential debate don't hold your breath. That was one of the funnier events I've seen last night. I just felt bad for Jennings.

What? Do you know that the Annenburg Foundation contributed to the McCain Campaign? and not to "that one" Do you know that the Annenburg Education Reformation Foundation started and was funded by a Conservative billionaire? Do you think they had any concerns about the past of William Ayers, they didn't, but i know they're not running to be the American Mascot, excuse me the President.(my apologies) Honestly is this it?, Is this all?, are you telling me that John McCain in his dealings with the US. Council on World Freedom and all the anti-semitic, anti-democratic, black opt regime changing, and who knows what else doesn't have any potential guilt-by-association aquiantances from his 26 years in Washington, What about Michael Keating, and the 112K that started McCain's political career, and no he wasn't aquitted of all wrong doing, he was rescued like he has always been from his short-falls, How did John McCain graudaute from the academy 5th from the bottom of his class? idea:connections you don't have. Did you know that John McCain crashed 3 airplanes before flying over Hanoi, One nearly sparked an international incident, another accidentally killed 147 seamen on the USS Forrestal, and do you think he lost his wings like you , me or Barack Obama would have, nope he was permitted to fly the mission over Hanoi only to get shot down in honorable service to our country. The point is that America in the past has rewarded mediocricy, twice we rewarded George W. Bush, his father like McCain's was a honorable decorated American solider who carried the traditions of the fore-father in hand, W. like McCain was raised in the shadow of those greater heros, with Odepal complexes in McCain's case two generations of military commanders, which lest you did not know has always been McCain's dream, however he has falling short of responsibly gaining a command position due to his own weak performance not media bias. Did you knoe that the same Micheal Keaton who sat on banking co. boards of directors with Jim Hensley McCains father-in-law and invested 345K of Cindy McCain-Hensley's money in commercial building projects IS a convicted criminal. Keating gave McCain another idea to one-up is father's Heor"ness" reasoning he would never gain that command position maybe he could "politrick" his way into the Whitehouse given his national celebrity POW story. Look at the Keating 5 hearing, the chairman prefaces McCain's testimony with the assertion that many in his party view him as a potential Presidental candidate back in 1991. So there's dirt everywhere, you should make sure that your candidate can stand to get dirty, because as the campaign stated McCain and his surrogates may throw the first punch, but last barrage will be all haymakers, I would advise McCain supporters to research the historys of these two men, overwhelming, the hopes of parents across this country for their children can be summarized by Sen. Obama's life story and rise to the national stage, if he can do it through hard work, sound judgement and character coming from where he comes from then we all should be hopeful, majority of Americans live lives closer to that reality, but you take John McCain's family tree, wealth and connections over the last 150 years, and he would be considered a member of elite ruling class in any society in the history of earth, from Babylon, to Narnia. Only in America could Sen. Obama come from where he came and lead the greatest nation on earth, we should all be proud of that, and that should inspire every American born child male, female, black, white, or latino. That's a good start for getting to country back on the right track. Don't be so angry facts are facts, checkout the Rolling Stones Article on McCain google Rolling Stones McCain and Maverick.

There is a fundamental problem with debates and the questions that are posed. The candidates, in their attempt to get elected, must attempt to answer questions when don't know the answers. Unfortunately, we are kidding ourselves. They can't have the answers until they know all the facts. And, you don't have all the facts until you're in the office. It is then that the lucky guy will be presented with the information need to make decisions. The test is, I guess, to determine who you agree with on the issues that are important to you. If you really listen to them, you'll know who you agree with or feel comfortable moving with. It's not necessarily who is more likable, but perhaps that does play a part in it as you want that person to be able to play well with others.

Ideas are abstract, but they provide you with an idea about what the priority is. Neither of them will fix much of anything in the first two years and perhaps the first four will be a wash in terms of solving significant problems. What would you do if they told you that? Might not be what you want to hear, but maybe it's the truth that's hard to swallow. Maybe at this point it's a matter of voting for the person who will first do no harm. Maybe we need to elect someone who will make it a priority to mend fences and steer us in a direction that helps us clear out our collective minds and finds ways to bring us together. At this point, that all I can hope for.

McCain's proposed a new $300B plan to save failing mortgages at the debate.

Gosh, doesn't he know that the HOPE for Homeowners Act of 2008, which went in effect less than a week earlier does just that? And guess what it costs $300B.

Since you were nice enough (to McCain) to reprint his inspirational closing comments from last night's debate, I'd like to do the same for Obama.

"...Here's what I do know. I know that I wouldn't be standing here if it weren't for the fact that this country gave me opportunity. I came from very modest means. I had a single mom and my grandparents raised me and it was because of the help of scholarships and my grandmother scrimping on things that she might have wanted to purchase and my mom, at one point, getting food stamps in order for us to put food on the table.

Despite all that, I was able to go to the best schools on earth and I was able to succeed in a way that I could not have succeeded anywhere else (but) in this country.

The same is true for Michelle and I'm sure the same is true for a lot of you.

And the question in this election is: are we going to pass on that same American dream to the next generation? Over the last eight years, we've seen that dream diminish.

Wages and incomes have gone down. People have lost their health care or are going bankrupt because they get sick. We've got young people who have got the grades and the will and the drive to go to college, but they just don't have the money.

And we can't expect that if we do the same things that we've been doing over the last eight years, that somehow we are going to have a different outcome.

We need fundamental change. That's what's at stake in this election. That's the reason I decided to run for president, and I'm hopeful that all of you are prepared to continue this extraordinary journey that we call America.

We're going to have to have the courage and the sacrifice, the nerve to move in a new direction."

thank you.

Drucker, Roll Call Staff, October 8, 2008, 11:54 a.m.-- The National Republican Congressional Committee, trailing its Democratic counterpart considerably in cash on hand, has secured an $8 million loan to spend on House races during the last few weeks of the campaign, according to sources. The NRCC reported $14.4 million in cash on hand as of Aug. 31, compared to $54 million in the bank for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. As it did last cycle, the NRCC is procuring its loan from Wachovia Bank, sources confirmed."

HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON ANGERED BY SARAH PALIN’S REMARKS

Hillary wants to know if Palin wants to run the United States in the same manner that she and McCain ran their dysfunctional families. Hillary added that Sarah Palin’s pathological lies and unprofessional name calling led to the five letter word pertaining to an Arctic hillbilly (P A L I N).

The financial system is still in grave peril, despite Congress's approval of an unprecedented $700 billion bailout.

Unemployment is rising, the economy is slowing, and the question isn't whether we're in for a recession but how long and how deep the recession will be.

Meanwhile, U.S. troops are still fighting in two places -- Iraq and Afghanistan -- where foreign occupations end badly.

The terrorists who struck us on Sept. 11, 2001, have been allowed to regroup within the borders of nuclear-armed Pakistan and are busy plotting new attacks.

Rarely have there been bigger or more urgent issues to talk about in a presidential campaign.

Yet GOP Republican McCain / Palin refuse to talk about these vital issues to America. Why?
GOP Republicans caused this mess and have not a clue of how to get us out of this mess.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The richest one percent of this country owns half our country's wealth, nine trillion dollars. One third of that comes from hard work. Two thirds of that comes from inheritance; interest on interest accumulating to widows / idiot sons; and stock / real estate SPECULATION. It is crap.

INSIDE JOB AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL:
GOP REPUBLICAN WHITE HOUSE ILLEGAL WARS AND
WALL STREET CRIMINAL DEREGULATED SPECULATIONS

You asked for it and you got it. GOP REPUBLICANS INSIDERS McCain, Bush, Cheney, Paulson, and Rice were hired by Super-Capitalists (Super Wealthy GOP REPUBLICANS) to start Illegal Oil Wars against Oil producing Nations and DEREGULATE (eliminate AMERICAN PEOPLE PROTECTION) the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT (White House, Congress, Supreme Court), TREASURY and WALL STREET. These INSIDERS did exactly what they were paid to do. Past GOP REPUBLICANS (Nixon, Reagan, Bush I) and current GOP REPUBLICANS (Bush II, Cheney, Rice, McCain, Paulson) have a credibility factor of zero. Americans no longer believe them, the World has never believed them and now they are done. They came in with the 9/11 attack upon the AMERICAN PEOPLE and leave with the Wall Street $1Trillion attack upon the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Wave after wave after wave the GOP REPUBLICANS attack the AMERICAN PEOPLE based on the premise of disrespect for anyone who is not a GOP RICH REPUBLICAN. Either you are in their group (GOP RICH REPUBLICAN) or out (debt ridden worker bee / victim). GOP REPUBLICANS view the AMERICAN PEOPLE as gullible sheep perpetually fattened with debt and led to the subhuman existence slaughter. When slavery (free labor) ended GOP RICH REPUBLICANS attacked and enslaved the people of the world through unbalanced trade. Now that foreign sweatshops are demanding better pay and treatment, GOP RICH REPUBLICANS are attacking the AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS. GOP RICH REPUBLICANS are banking on the idea that the AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS are non-thinking drones fat with artificial food, high on Wall Street sponsored imported drugs (legal / illegal), and choked with clutter, debt and noise.

Through massive GOP REPUBLICAN SPONSORED DEREGULATIONS, GOP REPUBLICAN CEOs, Treasury Secretary, Wall Street Speculators, White House Administration, Cabinet Members, and their insider friends each walked away with more than $20,000,000 annually of money stolen directly from the U.S. TREASURY (AMERICAN PEOPLE). After eight years of GRAND FRAUD AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL, thousands of GOP REPUBLICANS ROBBED OUR UNITED STATES TREASURY OF $1TRILLION (ACTS OF TREASON AGAINST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE).

ALL GOP REPUBLICANS INVOLVED in these ACTS OF TREASON will have ALL OF THEIR PROPERTIES (corporate and private, domestic and foreign sheltered) CONFISCATED, SOLD and RETURNED to OUR NATIONAL TREASURY (AMERICAN PEOPLE). Britain has nationalized its banks. The U.S. has nationalized Wall Street and will do the same for U.S. Oil if it hits $6.50 a gallon in two years. The Treasury and Oil are too crucial for national defense to be left in the hands of self serving speculators' private greed. The United States greed based society is over. We will copy Britain or Germany’s mixed economy system based heavily on the People government oversight. Speculators and gamblers cannot be trusted with the American economy. Wrong is wrong and wolves cannot be hired to protect cash cows. Today you can gamble in Las Vegas with your credit card (money that you don’t have); Wall Street high leverage speculation is the same thing.

Three weeks ago, some Americans stupidly said that we don’t need to consider World Opinion during the 2008 presidential election. It is now clear that America and The World are closely connected and that we need to consider how the World perceives our decisions. The World does not like John McCain and will not cooperate with McCain. Europeans and the World view John McCain as an old relic bent on returning the World to perpetual hostility.

No one wants another Cold War, except McCain. Palin’s childish perceptions are not worth mentioning, especially with the World watching and laughing at McCain’s choices. Russia does not want another Expensive Cold War, but it will play ball if McCain kicks off. While Bush and McCain are building military bases in Poland, Russia is speaking with Latin American Oil Nations about refining and cutting out U.S. Oil Companies. Next Russia will build military bases in Latin American in response to U.S. bases in Eastern Europe. McCain and Wall Street weapons manufacturers are the only ones who want to profit from a new Cold War. In reality, no one benefits from a new Cold War. The American People, Russian People and World People will be injured by a new Cold War. Expect European demands to be rid of all U.S. bases in Europe. The American People, Russian People and World People want peace and cooperation from the United States led by Barack Obama.

The World loves Barack Obama and has signed a letter of intent to cooperate with America under Barack’s leadership. Throughout the World young presidents are emerging and none of them want to return to the bad days of the Cold War (bomb shelters, high interest rates, disproportionate military spending, nuclear buildup, general fear). Nobody wants the return of the Cold War, except McCain and Wall Street weapons manufacturers. The American People are nationalizing Wall Street to prevent weapons manufacturers from dictating unfavorable terms to our economy. Again the American middle class must see pass their ignorance and the emperor with no clothes (Bush, McCain, Palin, Guiliani). Americans must vote for it’s best interest, which includes a favorable World Opinion. America And The World Will Vote Obama to avert financial and military catastrophes.

Let’s not forget that China, Saudi Arabia and India together hold over $1 Trillion in American currency. Do you think that China, Saudi Arabia and India have votes in the 2008 American election? The CEOs of American companies and Wall Street Banks heavily invested with funds from China, Saudi Arabia and India know that foreign governments will be exercising their strong votes in our election. You can thank McCain deregulations and GOP Republican American job outsourcing for dissipating Our American votes.

Obama has 8 years experience as a State Senator, 4 years in the US Senate, taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago, etc. Obama’s very high intellectual capacity allows him to analyze situations and make sound decisions. How can you even compare Palin’s GED from Moose Community College credentials to these?

THE GOP REPUBLICAN RUN Government (GOP President, GOP Congress, GOP Supreme Court) looked the other way, while GOP REPUBLICAN Super-capitalist WALL STREET SRO Speculators Robbed Our U.S. TREASURY and Forced the $Trillion Debt Upon the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Average Americans are becoming poorer, because GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET super rich SPECULATORS and corporate CEOs are paying themselves, business partners, friends, and family members at least $20,000,000 annually from MONEY STOLEN FROM THE U.S. TREASURY. These major crimes committed by WALL STREET SPECULATORS AND CEOs have gone beyond greed and into acts of treason against the AMERICAN PEOPLE. Seize the stolen money and properties valued in the $TRILLIONS back from these super criminals for attacking America. Those stolen $MILLIONS / $BILLIONS / $TRILLIONS belong to the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

RULE OF LAW states that the People of the United States will be defended. Those who attack American Citizens will be prosecuted. WALL STREET SPECULATORS and CORPORATE CEOs dictatorship over the AMERICAN PEOPLE is over. Average Americans are not going to accept WALL STREET CORPORATE CRIMES anymore. Rights of Citizen and Average Workers of the United States will be enforced. The AMERICAN PEOPLE will always come before corporate interests, because Americans Love America more than Wall Street Speculators love greed.

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET $TRILLION FRAUD AGAINST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

Direct impact of GOP McCain sponsored deregulations
Bankrupt and floundering
Failure of the investment bank
Government's takeover

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET's business model has collapsed

Greed and fear routinely govern GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET financial markets and GLOBAL CRISIS.

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET (giant investment houses, brokerage firms, hedge funds, "private equity" firms) irresponsibly TRADED the savings of average Americans (placed LAS VEGAS STYLE BETS on extremely high risk stocks, bonds, and other securities).

DUBIOUS MORTGAGES were PACKAGED into BONDS and SOLD and TRADED. Investment houses had huge incentives to increase LEVERAGE (OBSCENELY HIGH BORROWING).

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET compensation is heavily skewed toward annual bonuses, reflecting the profits traders and managers earned in the tune of lavish base salaries and obscenely high annual bonuses of $20,000,000.

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET relies heavily on OBSCENELY HIGH LEVERAGE (OBSCENELY HIGH BORROWING). $3 Trillion (stocks, bonds, other securities) backed by only $80 billion in shareholders' equity while the $2.8 Trillion was LEVERAGE (BORROWED).

Leverage (huge borrowing) can create huge debts (huge principal and interest obligations)

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET is a manic machine for gambling.
Traders and money managers are given huge incentives to do whatever would increase short-term profits.

For decades, GOP REPUBLICAN JOHN MCCAIN sponsored legislation that broadly deregulated WALL STREET banking and insurance industries.

GOP REPUBLICAN JOHN MCCAIN swept away Consumer Protection legislation and opened the way for a less restricted high risk financial marketplace.

While the GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET boom continued, government (White House, Congress, Supreme Court) looked the other way.

GOP REPUBLICAN Congress resisted tougher regulation and permitted WALL STREET to run out of control at obscenely high LEVERAGE (OBSCENELY HIGH BORROWED MONEY) RATIOS perpetrating intentional fraud against the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET leaders intentionally deceived customers and lenders into taking hazardous risks for short-term rewards regardless of the long-term dangers to the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Mortgages went bad. The powerful high leverage went into reverse. Losses eroded firms' capital bases and raised doubts about their survival.

Financial firms took major stupid and wasteful risks that severely damaged the American Economy and impeded economic recovery.

GOP REPUBLICAN STOCK MARKET $TRILLION FRAUD has deepened consumers' pessimism, fear and reluctance to spend. There may be more failures of FINANCIAL FIRMS.

GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET financial crises resemble the GOP REPUBLICAN illegal miscalculated war.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How were we ever made to believe that the now-collapsing GOP REPUBLICAN WALL STREET model ever made sense? Common sense should have told us that making RISKY BETS with HUGE AMOUNTS of BORROWED MONEY was a DANGEROUS GAME; if the bets pay off you make money beyond your wildest dreams, but if they go bad you face utter ruin.

Common sense should have told us that betting fortunes on meaningless fluctuations in stock, bond or currency values (McCain sponsored deregulated hedge funds) was about as productive as a trip to Las Vegas. Common sense should have told us that buying and selling exotic securities based on other securities based on bundles of mortgages that were treated like mere numbers on a balance sheet (no recognition that the whole iffy construct was based on real people living in real houses that they might or might not be able to afford) was not an intelligent endeavor.

Somehow, we all forgot that "HIGHLY LEVERAGED" is just another way of saying "DEEPLY INDEBTED." Now we've had a wake-up call, and maybe the erstwhile Masters of the Universe will have to stop playing with imaginary money and go back to using the real stuff.

HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON ANGERED BY SARAH PALIN’S REMARKS

Comments uttered by Sarah Palin has angered Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton who described Sarah Palin as an opportunist with no qualifications. Senator Hillary Clinton also stated that John McCain and Sarah Palin’s records on women’s rights are abominable. The country cannot withstand anymore George Bush failures cloaked in McCain/Palin. Asking Sarah Palin to become Vice President is like asking the grazing moose behind her trailer to pilot the shuttle.

National Organization of Women (NOW) Endorsed Pro-Women’s Rights ticket Obama / Biden for their outstanding work bettering the lives of women.

During her first term as Mayor, Palin went on an intense firing spree by sacking, or requesting resumes and resignation letters from the chief of police, finance director, public works director, and librarian.

In October of 1996, Palin consulted the city librarian about censoring "objectionable" books. The librarian was shocked and responded that the books were selected "on the basis of national selection criteria of libraries this size" and would resist all efforts to ban or remove any books from the library. A few months later Emmons received a letter from Palin stating that she had been terminated from her job. Emmons was reinstated the next day after public outcry.

Long time Alaskan acquaintance described Sarah Palin as a malicious, conniving opportunist, a reckless spender, and power abuser. Initially Palin supported the 'bridge to nowhere' project and even wore t-shirts that supported the project. When she realized that the project was not supported by the public she decided to back off.

Palin is an avid pro-lifer. Teen pregnancies are a major dilemma facing the nation today. The government spent $1 billion in supporting abstinence-only sex education programs since 1996. In the case of Palin's daughter, such programs are failing us. Palin is comfortable with giving her own daughter a choice, but wants to take away that choice from the rest of the nation.

By picking a young, attractive and vivacious woman as his partner in crime, McCain hoped to pull in all the disappointed Clinton supporters. This was his crucial mistake, because Sarah Palin is the antithesis of Hillary Clinton. She stands against women rights and would reverse women's rights by fifty years. Women are not as gullible as McCain and his advisors had hoped that they would be. Just because McCain placed a young woman in front of the crowd does not mean women will automatically vote for her without any question. Women will soon realize that Sarah Palin is an anti-choice, homophobic, polar bear, wolf, moose, and deer killing machine.

Sarah Palin is incapable of writing a speech. The speech given by her at the Republican National Convention was written long before she was considered for McCain’s running mate by the computer. McCain had never heard of Palin until after the computer printed her name one day before his announcement.

The thought that Sarah Palin will do anything in the White House is unsettling, because she is a unhinged lunatic who will mess up and give the public the perception that women cannot be in power. Hillary Rodham Clinton and women throughout the country are very angry that Sarah “moose hunter” Palin is in such an important position. Four out of Sarah’s five best friends have committed to Barack Obama.

PALIN FAILIN RETURNED HOME TO 2,000 ALASKAN PROTESTERS WHO CHEERFULLY CHANTED "O-BAM-AH.

Gov. Sarah Palin returned home to 2,000 protesters outside the Anchorage library who wanted to correct the widespread impression that the Last Frontier endorses her candidacy.

"Last week a group of women were sitting around talking about this perception that all of Alaska supports Sarah Palin. We apparently hit a nerve and started a movement,"

A sense of festival obtained. There was a woman in a polar bear suit representing "Polar Bear Moms Say: No Palin Failin." Drivers on 36th Avenue saw a little girl waving a sign "Don't Ban My Books."

"My mom is from Alaska. She's a working mother. She's good looking," said Nolan. "So she seems to be qualified to be vice president."

Asking Sarah Palin to become the Vice President is like asking the grazing moose behind her trailer to pilot the shuttle.

PRESIDENTIAL AND VICE PRESIDENTIAL CHOICES

I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight.....

If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're 'exotic, different.'

Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, and its a quintessential American story.

If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.

If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer,
become President of the Harvard Law Review,
create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters,
spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor,
spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people,
become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee,
spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13
million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign
Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees,
you don't have any real leadership experience.

If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years
on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less
than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000
people, and cook caribou/grizzly/wolf stew, then you're qualified to become the country's second
highest ranking executive.

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters,
all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress,
and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month,
you're a Christian.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including
the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only,
with no other option in sex education in your state's school system
while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you're very responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm
to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family,
your family's values don't represent America's.

If you're husband is nicknamed 'First Dude', with at least one DWI conviction
and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and
once was a member of a group that advocated: the secession of Alaska from the USA,
your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.

BRITISH PRIME MINISTER BROWN SUPPORTS BARACK OBAMA

LONDON - BRITISH PRIME MINISTER GORDON BROWN voiced support for UNITED STATES DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BARACK OBAMA, saying he would help Americans struggling with an economic downturn.

In a move seen by some British media as a break with a political convention requiring foreign leaders to remain neutral ahead of US elections, BRITISH PRIME MINISTER BROWN praised MR. OBAMA as a fellow “progressive politician” who would help ordinary Americans in tough times. With eight weeks to go before the presidential election, MR. OBAMA and his Republican rival John McCain are neck-and-neck in domestic opinion polls.

BRITISH PRIME MINISTER BROWN described the race for the White House as “electrifying” and said: “It is the DEMOCRATS who are generating the ideas to help people through more difficult times.”

“To help prevent people from losing their home, BARACK OBAMA has proposed a Foreclosure Prevention Fund to increase emergency pre-foreclosure counselling, and help families facing repossession,” he wrote in an article in The Monitor magazine, a monthly political publication.

REPORT SAYS GOP REPUBLICAN OIL AGENCY RAN AMOK

INVESTIGATION OF GOP REPUBLICAN OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET

INVESTIGATION OF GOP REPUBLICAN MINERALS MANAGEMENT SERVICE OIL MARKETING GROUP

GOP REPUBLICAN Government officials in charge of collecting BILLIONS of dollars worth of royalties from OIL and gas companies accepted gifts, steered contracts to favored clients and engaged in drug use and illicit sex with employees of the energy firms, federal investigators reported.

Investigators from the Interior Department's inspector general's office said more than a dozen employees, including the former director of the OIL royalty program, took meals, ski trips, sports tickets and golf outings from industry representatives. The report alleges that the former director, also netted more than $30,000 from improper outside work.

The report from Inspector General contains fresh allegations about the practices at the beleaguered royalty-in-kind program of Interior's Minerals Management Service, which last year collected more than $4 billion worth of OIL and natural gas from companies given contracts to tap energy on federal and Indian lands and offshore. The revelations come as Congress is set to consider opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and areas off the coast of Florida for drilling.

The royalty-in-kind program, based near Denver, allows energy companies to pay the government in OIL and gas, rather than cash, for the privilege of drilling on government land. It has been the subject of multiple investigations since 2006 by the Interior Department's secretary, its inspector general, the Justice Department and Congress for alleged mismanagement and conflicts of interest.

In the report released yesterday, investigators said they "discovered a culture of substance abuse and promiscuity" in which employees accepted gratuities "with prodigious frequency." The report cited one e-mail from a Shell Pipeline representative asking a woman in the royalty office to attend "tailgating festivities" at a Houston Texans football game: "You're invited . . . have you and the girls meet at my place at 6am for bubble baths and final prep."

Besides Shell, the energy company employees mentioned in the report worked for Chevron, Hess and Gary-Williams Energy. The social outings detailed in the report included alcohol-, cocaine- and marijuana-filled parties where certain employees of the Minerals Management Service were nicknamed the "MMS Chicks" by the energy employees. The companies paid for federal workers to attend football and baseball games, PGA Tour events, Colorado ski trips, paintball outings and "treasure hunts," investigators found.

"The OIL INDUSTRY holds shocking sway over the ADMINISTRATION and even KEY FEDERAL EMPLOYEES,". "This is why we must not allow BIG OIL'S AGENDA to be jammed through CONGRESS."

The current director of the Minerals Management Service, said that he takes the report "very seriously".
Employees identified in the report told investigators that they didn't think ethics rules applied to them because of their "unique" role in the agency and that they needed to socialize with industry representatives for "market intelligence," according to the report. Those employees, some of whom have been transferred to different offices, have been recommended for internal administrative action.

The inspector general's release comprised three separate reports, including one devoted to the program's director. It alleges that Smith improperly worked part time for Geomatrix Consultants, an Oakland, Calif.-based environmental and engineering firm, and marketed the company to government clients.

Additionally, the report said that the director had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a subordinate whom he paid to buy cocaine, promising her a bonus in return. The director admitted to the sexual encounter.

The director, who now works for a private OIL company in Denver, did not respond to requests for comment. Investigators referred their findings to federal prosecutors.

Justice officials also declined to comment on their decision about the criminal case against the highest-ranking official named in the report director of the Minerals Management Service, who worked in Washington. She is accused of improperly arranging a million-dollar deal for two retired employees.

The wife of the procurement policy administrator for the WHITE HOUSE OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET, retired from government service Jan. 31. She declined to comment on the report. She told investigators she had a "personal issue. The Justice Department's decision to charge created a rift with Interior officials.

One of the two retired employees pleaded guilty in July to a federal conflict-of-interest charge related to the investigation. Another employee has been under investigation for similar conflict-of-interest allegations.

Before he left, Mayberry created a job for himself by writing the job description and the criteria for selecting the winning bidder, court documents show. He started a company out of his Texas home and was awarded a $150,000 contract in June 2003. He later hired Dial, the report said. Mayberry's firm collected $788,000 worth of contracts.

The royalty-in-kind program, which started as a small pilot project a decade ago, has been touted as a way to simplify the way OIL AND GAS COMPANIES pay for the right to drill on federal land and offshore. Instead of calculating the profit from a well, they can simply give the government one-eighth to one-sixth of whatever they take from the ground.

Revenue rose quickly, from $1.5 billion in 2004 to $4.3 billion last fiscal year. But the growth occurred "in an environment with relatively unstructured in-house oversight," the congressionally convened Royalty Policy Committee said in a December report. Previous reports have said that companies were allowed to revise their million-dollar bids for projects indiscriminately, that government workers routinely failed to seek out legal advice on complicated deals and that the agency used outdated computers and a $150 million software program that resulted in royalty money going uncollected.

A lawyer who represented states and tribes entitled to a cut of the royalties, said it was nearly impossible to get accurate numbers from the agency. "They kept hemming and hawing," she said.

In late 2006 questions arose over its handling of leases written in 1998 and 1999 that allowed major OIL companies drilling in the Gulf of Mexico to avoid BILLIONS of dollars in royalty payments.

Former Interior Department auditors accused the agency of failing to bill companies. "We weren't allowed to audit them. It was disturbing," said an auditor who sued the federal government for not collecting royalties. "You couldn't see what was going on."

The minerals agency director said that the harm done by the royalty employees was to public trust and TREASURY, and acknowledged that financial considerations were given to firms that gave favors to federal employees, and he said the contracts will be audited.

Do you really question the motives of GOP Republicans Criminals? America must Immediately Nationalize U.S. OIL and Gas For National Defense.

Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain's fourth aircraft loss occurred July 29, 1967, soon after he was assigned to the USS Forrestal as an A-4 Skyhawk pilot. Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain had roughly 20 hours in combat. Since Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain got 28 medals, that equals out to a medal-and-a-half for each hour he spent in combat. There were infantry guys -- grunts on the ground -- who had more than 7,000 hours in combat where I'm sure a prison cell would have looked pretty good to them by comparison. The question really is how many guys got that number of medals for not being shot down.

Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain has been an unchecked master at manipulating an overly friendly and biased news media. The former POW turned Congressman, turned U.S. Senator, has managed to gloss over his failures as a pilot and collaborations with the enemy by exaggerating his military service and lying about his feats of heroism.

Wall Street OOIIILLLL Millionaire Crash Every Plane McCain has sprouted a halo and wings to become America's POW-hero presidential candidate.

Former naval officer and the owner of an OOIIILLLL-trading company that inked defense contracts worth $1 billion is the modern presidential money man. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Barak Obama proved why November's presidential election will end in a 50-state sweep. John Crash Every Plane McCain has no chance. It's like George Bush climbing into the ring with Mike Tyson; one thundering left hook and the Crawford Caligula would be sprawled across the canvas. "No mas"! The same fate awaits the crabby senator from Arizona. The polls are skewed to look like there's a political horse-race going on. There isn't. It's a complete rout. There's one well-toned thoroughbred striding from venue to venue electrifying the ever-increasing throngs, and one doddering, old mare limping towards the glue-factory. Someone should put a stop to it before Crash Every Plane McCain gets hurt.

At the Victory Column in Berlin's Tiergarten, Obama extracted Old Glory from the burn-pile and gave Brand America a desperately needed shot of adrenaline. 200,000 ecstatic Germans jammed the streets in what turned out to be the political shindig of the year. Many of them were waving American flags and chanting, "Obama, Obama, Obama". It was like Jack Kennedy had risen from his moldy sepulcher and made his way across the pond for one last rousing ovation. Obama has the very same affect on crowds. Its a gift and he knows how to use it to great advantage.

"People of Berlin, people of the world, this is our moment, this is our time," Obama boomed. "I know my country has not perfected itself, we've made our share of mistakes and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions. But the greatest danger of all is to allow new walls to divide us from one another."

What can we say about Obama's oratory skills that hasn't already been said? He is one of those unique characters who knows how to tap into the collective psyche and put them under his spell. He is the closest thing to a Pied Piper we've seen in the last half century. Whatever one thinks of his politics, his speeches are a welcome reprieve from the simian blabbering of President Dimwit.

"I speak to you not as a candidate for president, but as a citizen; a proud citizen of the United States and a fellow citizen of the world." (Roaring applause)

JOHN Crash Every Plane McCain: Maverick or Freak?
Have you taken a look at the crowds at a Crash Every Plane McCain event. Usually, there aren't any. Typically, there are more journalists and cameramen then people; and even they look bored. It's the truth. He generates no enthusiasm at all. None. He may be the most uninspiring, tedious, pure-vanilla candidate of all time; a complete dud. I challenge anyone to recite from memory anything John Crash Every Plane McCain has ever said in his 40 years in office. Time's up! When Crash Every Plane McCain begins to talk, its a signal for women to pull out the nail-files and for men to figure out how they're going to get out of cutting the lawn this week. Really. No one listens.

And the people that do manage to drag themselves to his speeches out of a sense of obligation are (you guessed it) scowling white guys with baseball caps pulled tightly over their ears or nearly-ambulatory Korea-era Vets who think the United Nations is a communist front-group that's planning to air-drop blue-helmets into Duluth to take over the United States. Tin-foil hats anyone?

Popularity and charisma, how does one survive in politics with neither. That's the question, and it may be the biggest mystery of Crash Every Plane McCain's candidacy. He's just not a likable guy. No one ever talks about hanging out and having a beer with John Crash Every Plane McCain, because they know that he might go "Jackie Chan" and start busting the place up. And he's utterly impossible to listen to. His high-pitched squeaky voice is about two octaves higher than a dog-whistle and twice as annoying. So how is he going to beat Obama. It's a total mismatch.

Crash Every Plane McCain is the perfect candidate for the GOP Republic party that has completely collapsed. He's like the "Jolly Roger" on the front of an iodine bottle; Brand X. In 2000, the Republican Party boasted it was the "party of ideas". What ideas? The Republican Party has never had ideas because the corporate mandarins and blue-blooded kleptocrats that run the party are suspicious of ideas, ideology, doctrine, philosophy or anything else that veers from their primary objectives of crushing the poor, despoiling the environment, carpet-bombing brown people wherever they may be, and enriching themselves. That's all they care about. The task of the right-wing think-tanks is to treat "war and tax cuts" like they're ideas. They're not. But war and tax cuts ARE the two foundation blocks of the Republican Party. There's nothing else; there never has been. Don't look for ideas; there aren't any. GOP Republican get rich quick by defrauding the AMERICAN PEOPLE, robbing the National TREASURY, sending American jobs overseas, and raising the national debt.

Hold Bush, Cheney, Rice, and Crash Every Plane McCain accountable for the crimes they've committed during their time in office.

Obama is not a candidate; he's a phenomenon. Obama is an explosive, vital, charismatic politician. When he speaks people feel better about themselves and their country. And, they're more hopeful about the future, too. That's what makes him unbeatable.

Crash Every Plane McCain, on the other hand, is the perfect embodiment of his party; a rusty, broken-down hulk that's been stripped of its engine, its fenders and all its moving parts. Even the steering wheel is gone. It's a dead-loss; nothing is salvageable.

Crash Every Plane McCain is in way over his head. This election is going to be a real embarrassment for him. It's too bad. He should be back at the Phoenix Rest Home shooing kids off the front lawn instead of waiting for the ax to fall in November. It's a rotten way to end a career.

HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON ANGERED BY SARAH PALIN’S REMARKS

Hillary wants to know if Palin wants to run the United States in the same manner that she and McCain ran their dysfunctional families. With the nomination of hockey mom Sarah Palin, John McCain has official transformed the defunct GOP Republican Party into a circus complete with a lipstick wearing pig clown displaying the IQ of a cockatoo. Hillary added that Sarah Palin’s pathological lies and unprofessional name calling led to the five letter word pertaining to an Arctic hillbilly (P A L I N).

Could it be because of 1200 dollar rape kits that victims pay in Alaska
Could it be because of the Alaskan Independence Party?
Could it be because of the Alaskan Independence Party sympathized with Timothy McVeigh.
Could it be because of AIP Founder Joe Vogel: “The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government", “and I won't be buried under their damn flag." (Joe Vogel is buried in Canada.)
Could it be because of Vogels' rantings of ....“I’m an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions." Joe Vogel – Founder.
Could it be because of Dexter Clark, vice chairman of the A.I.P.: refers to the American soldiers in Alaska as "occupying troops."
Could it be because of Michael Hill, a representative of A.I.P., stated on Glen Beck’s program that the goal of the A.I.P. is to dissolve the United States and the Constitution.
Could it be because of a rally in Ft. Myers Monday, a crowd member screamed, "Kill Him" as Sarah laughed and cheered with the crowd.
Could it be because of a fake skinheaded sherriff waddles to the podium after peeeuuu and calls out Barack Hussein Obama to the crowd to further boos and chants of kill him...on Monday
Could it be because of a McCain rally, he asked, "Who is Barack Obama?" and a crowd member yelled out "Terrorist" as McCain held that silly smirk on his addled face.
Could it be because of the reprehensible type of political campaigning is typical of the desperation the Republican Party finds itself in, as their numbers in the polls fall like the stock market...and now even further...

Could it be because of the Alaskan Drug Enforcement report under Palin proved uneffective...

...Or could it be that McCaint forgot who she was...

....Or just that negative campaigning and negative pathetic ad's have a negative effect...

"Tuesday's debate did not really answer the question many Americans are asking. Are either of these candidates truly up to tackling the problems the next president will inherit?"

Speak for yourself Ballz. Anyone with an 1/8 of a brain should be able to see McCain for what he is- an old senile angry man. If anyone out there thinks John McCain is about country first- think again.

Ten years ago if I described a leader who...

Lied while pushing his way into an unjust war;
Broke his own country's law to punish critics of his lying;
Tortured prisoners;
Ignored the concept of Habeas Corpus, and flaunted the Geneva convention;
Fired his own Justice Department officials for political gain;
Spied on his own people and publicly declared he needed no warrants to do so;
Ignored established science in favor of politically motivated opinions;
Freed the rich to play economic games until they trashed the economy;

...you would have thought I was describing a small third world dictator.

Tragically, our own country is somewhere between a laughing-stock and a pariah in the world today, because of our current administration.

This administration has assaulted our core principles, such as freedom, privacy, and security from "unwarranted" government intrusion.

The November vote must send a crushing message, so that no one will dare to behave this way again.

Senator McCain clearly needed a game changer. His mortgage renegotiation proposal sounds good at first hearing. But... I own my home and can afford the mortgage payment, taxes, insurance etc. As property values nationwide have plummeted, the value of my home has fallen also. Now Senator McCain proposes reevaluating homes bought by people who couldn't afford them, having the feds buy the bad loan, and reloan owners money to rebuy the home at the lower value. How is this fair to me? Frankly, this sounds like McCain's "Gas Tax Holiday". It sounds like a desperate candidate pandering to voters without thinking through the consequences. For me, all it does is bring into question McCain's and Palin's judgment...again.

Take away Vietnam, and McCain is an old unstable coot, and as far as Palin goes,"Excuse me Miss., but I asked for blueberry syrup." If this is the best they have, to alter Reagan's quote,"It's midnight in America for the Rep." Thank God.

Obama wins by parying punches and downing his opponent with a thunderous body blow:

"..you say I wet behind the ears while you are somber and sensible. This from a guy who sang bomb, bomb, bomb Iran, talked about annihiliating N Korea and then said next stop Baghdad. Doesn't sound very responsible to me."

And all the old guy could say was.." I was joking with a war buddy".

We need new ideas, energy and vision.

Balts... you missed the most salient point... that connected all the dots to the person... and that was when Obama mentioned his mom dying at 52 fighting the insurance companies with her last breath. The economy is what NY and DC run up the flag pole, but from where the people see that flag they are reminded about the largest chasm of human existence.. health and fighting the powers that be.

McCain is a grumpy, old man living in the past, and struggling through his "last hurrah." On the same note McCain's advisers, with all there underhanded tricks, cannot spin the "old white-haired dude" into a hotshot candidate.

The "debate" was a filtered down "nothing."
They received THOUSANDS of questions via internet and that was the best they could come up with?

What about abortion (Obama is for Infanticide).
What about gun control?
Obama wants to take the guns from the people "clinging to their guns and religion."

The question that should remain and continue-

Who is Barry Sotoero Hussein Obama?
(And Hillary Clinton was the first one to bring up the Obama-Ayres connection in detail in one of their debates!

Obama's "outright lie" that Bill Ayres was just a "guy in the neighborhood" - unless Barry is very clueless. It has now been documented. Obama's senate campaign was started in unrepentant terrorist Ayres' living room. Obama endorsed a radical BOOK written by Ayres- to modify the juvenile justice system. To lessen sentences by the poor, downtrodden YOUTHS who commit murder, rape, robbery, drug trafficking and other crimes.
They served on the Boards of Woods Foundation and the Annenberg Challenge. Barry raised hundred of thousands of dollars for Ayres' radical (and failed) educational fund.
I believe that Ayres "picked" Obama- because he wanted to manipulate the system from the inside- and Obama was the tool to reach that goal.
Question: What do Obama and Osama have in common?
They both know people who bombed the Pentagon.
It's the company you keep, Barry- and your choice of mentors, friends and business associates raises a lot of questions about your judgement. Rev. G.D. America Wright, Tony Rezko, Frank Raines ACORN - the list is long.

As late as September 11th, 2001- your "guy" said "We Didn't do enough"- when speaking of the bombings of his Weather Underground days. And that was WAY after you first met this "guy" from Hyde Park. The American people are not stupid. And YES the McCain-Palin ticket SHOULD keep bringing this to the forefront- because the left-wing, liberal, Obama-mania media certainly is not.

Obama won by a hair because McCain just cant help himself. He gets mean and sarcastic and looks and acts like a grumpy old man. I used to think the old temperment arguments about him were just politics but after watching both debates they may be dead on. He seriously lacks self-control which is not a good thing for a President.

Put a fork in mccain/palin - they're done. Going negative - and so horribly negative - will turn off more independent voters than it attracts. The issues hit too close to home this election. McCain appears to keep playing to his base - and turning off the indies.

Mr. Baltz wrote: "McCain's answer in the debate was a $300 (billion) plan to stabilize the housing market by buying up and renegotiating bad mortgages."

For a candidate basing much of his campaign on smaller government, this is a huge contradiction. Can you imagine the army of lawyers and accountants required to make this work? Not to mention the $300 billion price tag.

Senator Obama is showing himself to be the safer choice. Who would have thought it?

The stock market rise that is present at this time is welcome, though the stock prices change so rapidly. If this year is like the other three in the last forty years that a Democrat was elected the market should rise going into the election, but watch out because it should also tumble thereafter.

This morning John McCain put out a list of 100 former ambassadors who are supporting his campaign. Number two is Leonore Annenberg, the wife of Ambassador William Annenberg, the founder of the Annenberg Institute of Reform, which funded the Annenberg Challenge, which once had two famous board members: William Ayers and Sen. Barack Obama.

So either we should all be outraged that John McCain is supported by a family who funded a foundation that hired a "domestic terrorist", or this whole William Ayers thing is just plain silly. I choose the latter.
