McCain and Palin: Stevens Should Resign

By Debbi Wilgoren and Juliet Eilperin
Presidential hopeful John McCain called today for the resignation of fellow Republican Sen. Ted Stevens, following the Alaska lawmaker's conviction on charges of lying on financial disclosure forms to conceal gifts and home renovations he received from supporters.

Yesterday's verdict is "a sign of the corruption and insider-dealing that has become so pervasive in our nation's capital," the McCain campaign said in a statement. "It is clear that Senator Stevens has broken his trust with the people and that he should now step down."

Stevens, who at 84 is one of the most powerful men in the Senate, is fighting a tough battle to be reelected to his seat next Tuesday. He had sought an expedited trial in hopes of clearing his name before voters go to the polls.

After a federal jury convicted him of seven felony counts, Stevens maintained his innocence and accused the U.S. Department of Justice of prosecutorial misconduct.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain's running mate, this afternoon also called upon Stevens to resign, arguing that he should not serve in Congress next year even if he wins re-election next week.

"After being found guilty on seven felony counts, I had hoped Senator Stevens would take the opportunity to do the statesman-like thing and erase the cloud that is covering his Senate seat," Palin said in a statement. "He has not done so. Alaskans are grateful for his decades of public service but the time has come for him to step aside. Even if elected on Tuesday, Senator Stevens should step aside to allow a special election to give Alaskans a real choice of who will serve them in Congress."

Yesterday Palin had called upon Stevens to "do the right thing" but did not explicitly call for his resignation. Both she and McCain have based their campaign in part in their record of reformers, and McCain cited the need for reform this morning when he called on Stevens to give up his seat.

An 84 year old man who has most probably worked all his life to benefit Alaska.
He should be retired with honor that
Bush can do, and forget all the associations with Palin, whom he did in his hay day.

84, most probably suffering from some degree of senile dementia. Let him go gracefully.

Interesting that the Post salivates over a Stevens conviction. But find a Democrat with 90 large in his freezer and the Post says: Hey, what's the big deal??

Lord, save us from this fate!

The bad, the worse and the ugly.
Stevens took $250,000 to stuff his pocket.
Bush took $750,000,000,000 to stuff 0 WMD in his pocket.
He still got $400,000 salary.

If McCain was president, he'd fire him - just like the SEC Chairman (even though he can't). Well, get my budget hatchet out and fire everbody, dammit. I'm a Maverick with my hand on the tiller.

Another silly tactic and response to pretend to distance himself from the current administration.

Too bad he can't talk about solutions - just agression, firings and making cuts, and that the other guy is wrong.

The smartest thing Stevens could do is resign, not appeal and let the perception of prosecutorial misconduct favor him in history -- 'cause history he is. But, is Ted smart? Now there's a real poser.

youarestillanidiot- I never said she could just assume the role.

But, she has a very good chance of securing it in an election. Time is very short. She was Un-Qualified to be Commander in Chief if by some calamity John McCain was taken out of action.

Also, I would like to remind everyone again, the credit crises finally made news(Nothing NEW About It!), only AFTER the Convention.

Things Change!

We should be ready and able to change with and for them when we can!

McCain's VP, is a GREAT Example!

A "Change" to Economics Wise Mitt Romney for VP(Who is also a Qualified President Contender);

Now THAT'S Change I not only believe in, but could embrace heartily!

Listen up, dreamers:

PALIN CANNOT APPOINT A SUCCESSOR TO STEVENS.

Cannot. Na. Ga. Ha. Pen.

It's AK law. Seems they weren't too happy with former Gov. Frank Murkowski's nepotism on behalf of his daughter Lisa, so the law requires calling a special election.

Can we lose the "Sarah appoints herself!" and "If elected, Stevens pledges to resign and let Gov pick replacement" fantasies?

Let's hope John McCain follows his own advice and resigns after he loses the election next week. After all, he has more than demonstrated that he is a dishonorable man utterly lacking in integrity and self respect. His behavior during this campaign has shown us all that McCain has violated his trust and honor. Resignation from the Senate is the only honorable choice left to him.

"I'm sure there were people who called for John McCain to step down when he was names as one of the KEATING FIVE, but he didn't. He stayed and fought."

Good point. Keating and McCain were close personal and political friends. Keating had given McCain over $100,000 in contributions. McCain's wife invested in Keatings properties. Keating had taken McCain on free trips to his island in the Bahamas (which were repaid years later when they came to light when Keating's troubles emerged).

When the time came to help Keating, McCain was part of a group that met with federal regulators, who then backed off with disastrous results for taxpayers.

The Senate found that McCain had only "poor judgment." But they could not deal with the free trips because they occurred when McCain was in the House. And the House could not deal with them because McCain was in the Senate.

I guess poor judgment and technicalities are more than what Stevens had. But McCain's call to end insider dealings sounds hollow in light of this -- and in light of the lobbyists on his staff and the many financial dealings between Rick Davis and Fannie and Freddie.

thecannula....
I guess you still believe in the Trickle Down Fairy. Just where ARE these jobs that the Bush tax cuts for the top 5% were supposed to create? Corporations continue to outsource jobs to India, China, etc., where they can get cheap (slave) labor. We are heading for 6% unemployment and countless people are UNDER-employed...now working beneath their capabilities. The gap between executives and workers is now higher than 400%.
So, unless you are a CEO, or you are making over a quarter million a year, you will benefit more from Obama's plan.

Posted by: joy2 | October 28, 2008 2:51 PM | Report abuse

Tradition! tradition....tradition

National Gallup (Traditional)* Obama 49, McCain 47 Obama +2

Those numbers are a sight for sore eyes-

Americans want jobs and a good economy, in the tradition of the best that America has been-

America does not want socialism....from each according to his ability... because we value hard work and the chance of getting ahead by studying (like Obama did), working with our hands, writing the next hit, or the "Great American Novel", or simply working our way up day by day as a teacher, policeman, architect, etc taking joy in the help we've brought to others and the security we've brought to our families.
THAT's American tradition- not the Redistributive Society Obama could bring in 2 months. What does America want? A check or a job?
Gallup's showing us that more and more want jobs!

OBAMA’S MIDDLE CLASS TAX CUT - $1200

McCAIN’S MIDDLE CLASS TAX CUT - $300 + LOWER CORPORATE TAXES FOR BUSINESES CREATING MIDDLE CLASS JOBS

LET’S SEE- $1200 CHECK VS $300 CHECK+JOB

That's NO dilemma!

When they found that she had abused her power as governor, she was jubilant. "I broke no laws", was all she said.

Palin's only comment so far in regard to this story was "I'm sure Sen. Stevens will do the right thing."
Again, why isn't Palin condemning Stevens??

FOX NEWS REPORT;
AP IMPACT: Mortgage firm arranged stealth campaign.
Monday, October 20, 2008

By PETE YOST, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON — Freddie Mac secretly paid a Republican consulting firm $2 million to kill legislation that would have regulated and trimmed the mortgage finance giant and its sister company, Fannie Mae, three years before the government took control to prevent their collapse.

In the cross hairs of the campaign carried out by DCI of Washington were Republican senators and a regulatory overhaul bill sponsored by Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb. DCI's chief executive is Doug Goodyear, whom John McCain's campaign later hired to manage the GOP convention in September.

Freddie Mac's payments to DCI began shortly after the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee sent Hagel's bill to the then GOP-run Senate on July 28, 2005. All GOP members of the committee supported it; all Democrats opposed

McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, or his lobbying firm has taken more than $2 million from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac dating to 2000. In December, Freddie Mac contributed $250,000 to last month's GOP convention.

Pretty interesting dynamic on the GOP ticket here. If Stevens steps down now, almost assures Begich of a victory. If he stays in and manages to eke out a win a week from now, then gets the boot later, then Sarah Palin would seem an odds on favorite to succeed him in the Senate! A Governor/Senator is in a much stronger place from which to launch a 2012 campaign, not to mention all that extra media exposure from being in the Capital! Now why wouldn't John McCain want to foster that?

I’d be interested in your comments on the most recent form of "redistribution of weath" - as in the 1 trillion dollar bailout that Bush all but begged us for. This "redistributing" of money from the poor to the wealthy is any different that the one that will be coming the other way how?

By the way, when speaking about your "ISMS" perhaps you missed it when the current administration presided over the greatest increase in government expenditure and loss of civil liberties this country has ever seen. Perhaps you missed that "ISM" taking place in front of your eyes.

The "ISM" you are referring to wouldn't go around nationalizing banks now would it?

Your fear of socialism has come too late my friend.

Even McCain wants Uncle Sam to buy up mortgages (read: houses) directly from homeowners who can’t pay for them. Are you kidding me? How can you possibly hint at Socialism when you can’t distinguish one act of it from another?

If Senator Stevens wins reelection next week, he can remain a Senator for six years, despite being a convicted felon. He can, however, be expelled by a 2/3 majority vote of the Senate. If the Senate gains a filibuster-proof Democratic majority, that will likely happen, and a replacement would become necessary.

However, the laws of Alaska prohibit Governor Palin appointing herself or anyone else as the replacement Senator. Rather, a special election would have to be held – and she could certainly run for the office. The same rules apply if Senator Stevens resigns - which I don’t see him considering until after he learns whether he’s been reelected.

Personally, I think the citizens of Alaska should just save themselves the trouble/time/expense of a special election and elect the mayor of Anchorage the next Senator from Alaska.

I find it totally ironic that Senator Mccain is calling for Stevens to resign. What a hypocrite. He always supported Stevens and now just like Bush last week, he betrays them. At what bounds will this man who wants to be President stop at betraying people? He betrayed his first wife. It's been rumored for years he betrayed his fellow POW's. And he wants to be President. What country will he betray us too? We need a man in the White House with Bravery, Honesty, and Integrity and Mccain is none of these. In my opinion he is nothing more than a modern day Benedict Arnold!

Read below and guess who said it...

"But I believe that when you really look at the tax code today, the very wealthy, because they can afford tax lawyers and all kinds of loopholes, really don't pay nearly as much as you think they do when you just look at the percentages. And I think middle-income Americans, working Americans, when the account and payroll taxes, sales taxes, mortgage pay -- all of the taxes that working Americans pay, I think they -- you would think that they also deserve significant relief, in my view..."

"So, look, here's what I really believe, that when you are -- reach a certain level of comfort, there's nothing wrong with paying somewhat more. But at the same time, that shouldn't be totally out of proportion. There's some countries such as Sweden where it doesn't pay anything to work more than six months a year. That's probably the extreme.

But I think the debate in this country is more about tax cuts rather than anything else. And frankly, I think the first people who deserve a tax cut are working Americans with children that need to educate their children, and they're the ones that I would support tax cuts for first."

garygelormino1 - Do you have a brain? Did you read beyond the the "AP IMPACT line that "Mortgage firm arranged stealth $2 million campaign payments to GOP"? If you did, you would see that it is flatly wrong. It should have read "AP IMPACT: Mortgage firm arranged stealth $2 million campaign payments to DCI" Just because McCain's campaign hired DCI to manage the RNC doesn't mean that the DCI = GOP. Did you ever stop and think why would the GOP take money from Fannie and Freddie take money to stop a bill that it's own members were pushing? If anything, it was the democrats, especially Sen. Dodd, that are guilty of this.

What was so stealthy about the payment? The bill the DCI helped kill was sponsored by Republicans, all GOP members of the the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee supported it; all Democrats opposed it (Sen. Dodd (D) is at the top of the list for receiving campaign contributions from Freddie and Fannie).

The $1 Billion Connection: McCain And His Lobbyists' Clients

Campaign Money Watch, a nonpartisan campaign finance watchdog group, announced today the result of a new analysis of the fees Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) lobbyist bundlers, advisors and staff members have collected from domestic clients over the past decade.

The total? A staggering $930,949,819.

"The McCain campaign relies on big money lobbyists, and they'll rely on him," said David Donnelly, director of Campaign Money Watch. "In the 'you-scratch-my-back, I'll-scratch-yours' world of Washington, $931 million gets the special interests the best government money can buy. But just think of the payday these lobbyists might expect in a McCain Administration."

You have to figure there is something to gain poplitically for McCain and the Republican's for him to all of a sudden be calling for Steven's to resign with the election only 7 days away. Maybe it is because Palin would then be able to appoint a replacement for Steven's rather than letting the Alaskan people decide. Nothing McCain does at this stage of the process is credible.Months ago McCain could have put out a statement saying that "if" Steven's was found guilty he should resign rather than run on November 4. If Senator McCain is calling on Senator Stevens to resign, it seems that he should ask Gov Palin to do the same. Both Stevens and Palin have demonstrated remarkably bad judgment and violated ethics standards that Senator McCain has publicly and openly deplored. The only difference is that Sen Stevens went to trial for his ethics violations while Gov Palin has merely been censured for her equally repugnant ethics violations. Perhaps if Gov Palin resigned and was replaced with a viable VP candidte with real credentials for national leadership, Sen McCain might find himself back in this race.

That is about the worst possible thing anyone could ever say. A week before the polls open and they can't say a word for keeping it a local problem.

Why not just call for the resignation of Bush and Cheney? They are both liabilities also.

40 years in the senate and with a week to go they can't say he has a lot of explaining to do with the people back home.

McCain is condemning a fellow Republican. The other Republican is prison wants company.

McCain is an opportunist...he does not mean it, Senator Stevens.

McCain is a dead end.

First words out of McCains mouth that I actually agree with. On another note, kudos to the United States Senate for not discriminating against our nation's criminals.

wait a doggone minute mccain. palin was found guilty of abusing her power as governor in troopergate by a bipartisan legislative investigation. so how come you didn't ask palin to resign from the ticket? instead mccain, you defended her and palin to this day claims she did nothing wrong. both palin and stevens are in the same category, that of corruption. how can you throw stevens under the bus and protect palin at the same time? double standard? you were once an honorable man mccain but not so much anymore. what happened to you? power and money corrupts, so which one got to you? you have money, access to your wife's fortune so it has to be power. too bad, so sad.

Mad props to McCain for this, even though I'm voting for Obama.

And ... wth is with 'those' people in Alaska? Congressman, Senator and Governors all under investigation for all sorts of things, and Sarah is just plain wierd.

Alaska is out of sync with the Lower 48.

John McCain, trying to get out ahead of the bad publicity Senator Stevens has yet AGAIN brought to the sorry GOP. Why did the republicans coin "Government Of the People" for themselves? They are government of the wealthy, CEOs, most influential and the oil cartel.

Senator McCain, your call for Senator Stevens to resign is yet another political, grand-standing stunt to woo the voters. Just like your erratic call for the firing of the Security Exchange Commission's chief in September. What do you say Senator McCain to two republicans in TWO WEEKS being convicted of wrong doing? Your running mate for her abuse of her much bally-hooed "executive power" and Senator Stevens for his extensive, expensive gifts? Yeah, you represent the moral right. Only when it benefits you in votes.

FOX news reports that Republicans caused the economic collapes of Fannie Mae and also Freddie Mac

AP IMPACT: Mortgage firm arranged stealth $2 million campaign payments to GOP

All GOP members of the committee supported it; all Democrats opposed it.
