Obama Campaign Urges Last Minute Voter Registration

By Jose Antonio Vargas
Talk about a digital campaign assault.

By 2 p.m., Sen. Barack Obama's campaign had reminded its supporters across the country that the deadline for registering to vote was today in many jurisdictions. The e-mail alert was geographically targeted. "You may already be registered to vote, but you probably know several people who are not," read an e-mail sent to Obama supporters in Washington, D.C., at 12:57 p.m. "If they're not registered by today, they can't vote in this historic election."

The subject line read: "Now or never in Washington, DC."

Obama's online operation has been unmatched in its use of text messaging, in part because Sen. John McCain's campaign does not have a text messaging program. And while it's unclear exactly how many cell phone numbers the Obama campaign has in its database -- in the millions, some predict -- Scott Goodstein, Obama's mobile guru, today sent out a handful of texts a sizable number of them, reminding would-be voters of the looming deadline.

Supporters in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Arizona, among others, report receiving the following text (modified with the state information, of course): "It's the LAST DAY to register to vote in PA. Forms must be postmarked or handed in TODAY. Tell friends to visit VoteForChange.com or call 877-572-6226 Fwd msg!"

VoteForChange is the campaign's online registration drive. The program is heavily promoted on Obama's profiles across more than 20 social networking sites. Voters can access it via Facebook and MySpace, where Obama lists about 2 million and 700,000 supporters, respectively, and also on targeted social networking sites such as BlackPlanet (491,000 supporters), MiGente (53,000) and AsianAve (2,700).

It's difficult to measure exactly how successful these features are. Nevertheless, by 6 p.m. today, a glance at Google Trends showed "register to vote online" as the second most popular search term -- right behind "Neil Kashkari," the former VP at Goldman Sachs and now interim assistant secretary of the Treasury, and ahead of "Keating economics," in reference to the 13-minute documentary produced by the Obama campaign detailing McCain's role in the Keating Five scandal of the early 1990s.

Where did this one come from?

"You know that home values of retirees continues to decline and people are no longer able to afford their mortgage payments. As president of the United States, Alan, I would order the secretary of the treasury to immediately buy up the bad home loan mortgages in America and renegotiate at the new value of those homes -- at the diminished value of those homes and let people be able to make those -- be able to make those payments and stay in their homes.

Is it expensive? Yes. But we all know, my friends, until we stabilize home values in America, we're never going to start turning around and creating jobs and fixing our economy. And we've got to give some trust and confidence back to America.

I know how the do that, my friends. And it's my proposal, it's not Sen. Obama's proposal, it's not President Bush's proposal. But I know how to get America working again, restore our economy and take care of working Americans. Thank you."
-- John McCain

"No argument, for the most part, from me. My issue was with the contention by most liberals that people are all dumb and couldn't possibly understand what they were signing on the vast majority of these mortgages.

The fact is, we all grew up learning some simple to understand rules without having a Finance degree:
- you need a big chunk of money to put down on a house before buying
- you should understand how the new house payment will fit into your budget, both now and in the LONG TERM.
- your monthly payment should be less than 40% of your take home pay.
- there are more costs of homeownership to consider before you buy than just the mortgage payment (property taxes, insurance, maintenance, etc.)

There's no doubt many banks were perfectly willing to loan money to people they knew were stretched too thin, as the banks had profit motives as well. So there's lots of blame to go around.

But I dismiss the notion, as liberalism teaches, that most people are too dumb to run their daily lives so they need the government to do it for them (be it mortgates, health care, retirement planning, etc).

crossingpaths you may want to check the source of your info as Snopes has this listed as an obvious exaggeration.

"That's the premise of thie above-quoted e-mail, which claims that three men formerly associated with the Federal National Mortgage Association (commonly known as "Fannie Mae") are now serving as "chief economic advisors" with the presidential campaign of Barack Obama. However, although at least some of these men have had connections to the Obama campaign at one time or another, none of them has ongoing roles with that campaign as chief economic advisors."

Are you sure you are not talking Hillary's healthcare plan? I don't think Obama has a mandate for coverage other than for children.

"Portable Health Coverage For All: While Obama does not have an individual mandate to purchase health insurance; it is likely that he would cover as many people as would Clinton because he argues he makes coverage affordable for about as many as Clinton claims to. Compared to McCain, he puts far more emphasis on getting people covered upfront."

So you are saying that "a coffee" and a $200 donation in 2001 is what has you all fired up?

You do realize that Ayers was never convicted of any terrorist activity? He did spend 10 days in jail for a draft sit in, not that unusual for the times.

I would think you would be much more worried about our countries future and things like the economic crisis.

Wasn't it Palin that said "Say it ain't so, Joe, there you go again pointing backwards again."

Subject: Fw: Fannie Mae ... Here is a quick look into 3 former Fannie Mae executives who have brought down Wall Street.Franklin Raines was a Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Fannie Mae. Raines was forced to retire from his position with Fannie Mae when auditing discovered severe irregularities in Fannie Mae's accounting activities. At the time of his departure The Wall Street Journal noted, " Raines, who long defended the company's accounting despite mounting evidence that it wasn't proper, issued a statement late Tuesday conceding that "mistakes were made" and saying he would assume responsibility as he had earlie r promised. News reports indicate the company was under growing pressure from regulators to shake up its management in the wake of findings that the company's books ran afoul of generally accepted accounting principles for four years." Fannie Mae had to reduce its surplus by $9 billion.Raines left with a "golden parachute valued at $240 Million in benefits. The Government filed suit against Raines when the depth of the accounting scandal became clear. http://housingdoom.com/2006/12/18/fannie-charges/ . The Government noted, "The 101 charges reveal how the individuals improperly manipulated earnings to maximize their bonuses, while knowingly neglecting accounting systems and internal controls, misapplying over twenty accounting principles and misleading the regulator and the public. The Notice explains how they submitted six years of misleading and inaccurate accounting statements and inaccurate capital reports that enabled them to grow Fannie Mae in an unsafe and unsound manner." These charges were made in 2006. The Court ordered Raines to return $50 Million Dollars he received in bonuses based on the miss-stated Fannie Mae profits. *************************************************************************************************************************Tim Howard - Was the Chief Financial Officer of Fannie Mae. Howard "was a strong internal proponent of using accounting strategies that would ensure a "stable pattern of earnings" at Fannie. In everyday English - he was cooking the books. The Government Investigation determined that, "Chief Financial Officer, Tim Howard, failed to provide adequate oversight to key control and reporting functions within Fannie Mae," On June 16, 2006, Rep. Richard Baker, R-La., asked the Justice Department to investigate his allegations that two former Fannie Mae executives lied to Congress in October 2004 when they denied manipulating the mortgage-financegiant's income statement to achieve management pay bonuses. Investigations b y federal regulators and the company's board of directors since concluded that management did manipulate 1998 earnings to trigger bonuses. Raines and Howard resigned under pressure in late 2004.Howard's Golden Parachute was estimated at $20 Million!************************************************************************************************************************* Jim Johnson - A former executive at Lehman Brothers and who was later forced from his position as Fannie Mae CEO. A look at the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight's May 2006 report on mismanagement and corruption inside Fannie Mae, and you'll see some interesting things about John son. Investigators found that Fannie Mae had hidden a substantial amount of John son's 1998 compensation from the public, reporting that it was between $6 million and $7 million when it fact it was $21 million." John son is currently under investigation for taking illegal loans from Countrywide while serving as CEO of Fannie Mae.Johnson's Golden Parachute was estimated at $28 Million. WHERE ARE THEY NOW?FRANKLIN RAINES? Raines works for the Obama Campaign as Chief EconomicAdvisorTIM HOWARD? Howard is also a Chief Economic Advisor to ObamaJIM JOHNSON? Johnson hired as a Senior Obama Finance Advisor and wasselected to run Obama's Vice Presidential Search Committee

Your definition of "liberalism" lifted from wikipedia is grammatically correct, but I'm referring to political liberalism as the term is used today.

Modern political "liberalism" has nothing at all to do with the original definition you posted. George Will said it best, and I think liberals would even agree correctly, when he once said that everyone wants fairness and individual freedom, but if they had to choose:
- liberals would prioritize fairness at the expense of individual freedom.
- conservatives would prioritize individual freedom at the expense of fairness.

Now look at today's presidential campaign between Obama and McCain. Who do you think fits the label of "liberal" using George Will's definition?

Using your wikipedia definition, Democrats sure don't. After all, if individual liberty is the "ultimate goal" of liberalism, then why aren't liberal Democrats fighting for my "individual freedom" to choose whatever health insurance I want, or even none at all if I want to pay cash for services as they are rendered?

So what you are saying then is that Obama did not do anything illegal, just that some of the things you think he did you find more offensive than some things a person could be jailed for.

That is your perception, based on things you have heard.

I thought you were actually trying to imply that you had heard that Obama had done something that you felt he should be jailed for.

I wasn't aware that Obama was "friends" with Ayers or had in anyway "supported" the activity of terrorists.

Maybe you can point out what you know that is not contained below.

"Bill Ayers and Barack Obama have been linked during their time in the city of Chicago, where they lived three blocks apart and led charges for education reform in the state of Illinois. The two met "at a luncheon meeting about school reform in a Chicago skyscraper."[40] Obama was then named to the Chicago Annenberg Project board to oversee the distribution of grants in Chicago. Later in 1995, Ayers hosted "a coffee" for "Mr. Obama's first run for office."[41] The two served together on a community anti-poverty group, the Woods Fund of Chicago, between 2000 and 2002, during which time the board met twelve times.[41] Ayers also contributed $200 to Obama's re-election fund to the Illinois State Senate in April 2001."[40] Since 2002, there has been little linking Obama and Ayers.[41] Obama says he has not visited Ayers during the presidential campaign. The senator said in September 2008 that he hadn't "seen him in a year-and-a-half."[42] In February 2008, Obama spokesman Bill Burton released a statement from the senator about the relationship between the two: "Senator Obama strongly condemns the violent actions of the Weathermen group, as he does all acts of violence. But he was an eight-year-old child when Ayers and the Weathermen were active, and any attempt to connect Obama with events of almost forty years ago is ridiculous."[40] CNN's review of project records found nothing to suggest anything inappropriate in the volunteer projects in which the two men were involved.[43] Internal reviews by The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time magazine, The Chicago Sun-Times, The New Yorker and The New Republic "have said that their reporting doesn't support the idea that Obama and Ayers had a close relationship."[44]"

I was thinking the way everyone is for regulation now is probably exactly like the way everyone was for increased lifeboats on 4/15/1912.

I am not so sure about how you define liberalism.

"Liberalism is a broad array of related ideas and theories of government that consider individual liberty to be the most important political goal."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism

Granted often times the goal of ideology is diluted by the reality of putting it in practice, but I think "that most people are too dumb to run their daily lives so they need the government to do it for them" is stretching it a bit.

Lets face it the government already does a lot to "care" for us in our daily lives. Speed limits, seat belt and helmet laws, food safety standards, safety regulations on public transport, OSHA, etc. I guess you could say that we are all too dumb to take care of these things ourselves, but I don't know that you can blame that on liberalism.

Palin's attacks on Obama's so-called "relationship" with former Weatherman member, Bill Ayers, a "domestic terrorist", who never killed anyone and who was never convicted of anything and whose actions took place when Obama was 8 years old, have verged on racist as she claims that Obama "doesn't see America as you and I do".

At a rally yesterday, a crowd member screamed, "Kill Him" as Sarah laughed and cheered with the crowd.

A fake sherriff waddles to the podium after peeeuuu and calls out Barack Hussein Obama to the crowd to further boos and chants of kill him...

At a McCain rally, he asked, "Who is Barack Obama?" and a crowd member yelled out "Terrorist" as McCain held that silly smirk on his addled face.

This reprehensible type of political campaigning is typical of the desperation the Republican Party finds itself in, as their numbers in the polls fall like the stock market...

peeeuuu palin and her husband are closeted facists and traitors...and again so is Vietcong propaganda model McCaint...

What is the Alaskan Independence Party?

The A.I.P. sympathized with Timothy McVeigh.

Founder Joe Vogel: “The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government", “and I won't be buried under their damn flag." (Joe Vogel is buried in Canada.)

“I’m an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions." Joe Vogel – Founder.

Dexter Clark, vice chairman of the A.I.P.: refers to the American soldiers in Alaska as "occupying troops."

Michael Hill, a representative of A.I.P., stated on Glen Beck’s program that the goal of the A.I.P. is to dissolve the United States and the Constitution.

This is Sarah Palin’s and the Republican Party’s version of patriotism and love of country.
........peeeuuuu

"First Dud", Todd Palin, registered with the Alaskan Independence Party in 1995 and remained a member for seven years. "Besides a short period of a few months in 2000 when he changed his registration to undeclared, pheww Palin remained a registered member of AIP until July 2002 when he registered again as an undeclared voter."

The AIP was founded in 1984, but its website doesn't begin listing officers until 1992, when its founder, Joe Vogler, "Disappeared"... in 1992, body found in May 1994."

As I have written in a previous blog...the same Joe Vogler who turned-up dead in a Fairbanks gravel pit, the victim of a "plastic-explosives sale gone bad", according to his murderer.

Sarah Palin addressed the Alaskan Independence Party Convention a little over 6 months ago, happily telling its attendees that she shared its "vision of upholding the Constitution of our great state", curiously not mentioning the Constitution of the United States.

She encouraged AIP to "keep up the good work".

The AIP website enshrines on its website a tirade from Joe Vogel that concludes with this statement.....

"We (the Alaskan Independence Party) ask that a courageous member of the United Nations sponsor us to appear before the General Assembly to present our case, that we may be restored to the list of Non-Self-Governing Territories so that we may eventually secure our right to self determination. We would also like to take the matter before the International Court of Justice if such is feasible."

...Now them's a fightun words.....

As for Wasilla, Alaska, it is STILL called the Methamphetamine capital of Alaska...oh also did you know that it is legal to possess under 3 ounces of Marijuhana in that state as well....

Sarah Sez..."gotta keep 'em stoned and stupid"

peeeuuu Palins 80% approval rating..yea, now I can see why...

Thanks but no thanks to McCaint and eeeuuu Palin for their treachery and further traitorus encounters

dbw1 I think you are really oversimplifying the subprime problem a bit.

Apparently about 40% of the loans were investment or vacation home loans. I agree with you completely that these people most likely knew better and deserve little sympathy.

For the first time home buyer the whole process is so confusing that many may have been mislead, innocently or not, into loans or homes they should have avoided. Everyone in this process except the home buyer is in it for profit, so the incentive is to make the most money you can on the deal.

There were also Ninja loans (No Income, No Job, No Asset) loans and similar ARM type loans that simply should not be permitted. The problem here is that the industry made money, from the realtor to the institutions selling the bundled bad loans, the incentive was to sell, sell, sell.

While the problem may have started with a single home buyer it was the passing off of the risk from institution to institution that really got the problem going.

The questionable loans were bundled into securities, these were often misrated by credit reporting agencies, and then purchased as investments by more and more funds and institutions.

So now, with little government or industry oversight, at least little by people not somehow involved in the process, you have the house of cards built up by the original loans collapsing. Like a snowball rolling downhill it picks up more and more institutions and people with it.

Now most everyone is in favor of increased regulation, but that was not always the case, especially in McCain's case.

dbw1, I do hope you were not affected much by this crisis, but I suspect you were indirectly, as was everyone else to some degree.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subprime_mortgage_crisis

"Face it, while there were no doubt a small percentage of truly unscrupulous lenders who lied and misled people into signing loans they didn't understand, most analysis so far has concluded the vast, over-whelming majority of problem mortgages were entered into by people who who got greedy. Most were either trying to buy $500k homes on a $50k/yr salary and 0% down, or were caught up in the frenzy of speculation in hot markets like Arizona or Florida, buying 2nd, 3rd, 4th homes on 110% financing believing they would flip them in a short time and cash out."

For you doubters who think the allegations of media bias are fabricated by paranoid conservatives, I submit Exhibit A.

Consider that today the Post and most other mainstream media are posting several stories/opinion pieces on:
- McCain's relationship to Keating (an event 20 years old)
- McCain taking $100k in campaign contributions from Keating, and the failure of Keatings S&L costing taxpayers $3 billion (an event 20 years old).
- McCain and a possible Iran/Contra connection (an event 20+ years old)
- McCain and this Navy story (an event 40 years old)

Yet, not one mention of:
- Obama's campaign receiving tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from foreigners, which is illegal (a current event).
- Obama's tight relationship with Jeremiah Wright, which was closer by far than any relationship McCain had with Keating (an event 4 months old)
- Obama receiving as much money from Fannie Mae as McCain ever did from Keating, and Fannie will cost taxpayers up to $1 TRILLION, compared to the $3 billion cost of Keating's failure (an event 3 months old).

It is laughable that these guys like Dobbs and the rest of the crew at the Post are simply out today posting whatever crap the DNC feeds them to distract from the stories of Obama illegal campaign donations, Jeremiah Wright, or any other stories that would be embarassing to the Messiah.

So, anyone want to try arguing there is no bias in our press?

Can you provide an example of someone who was told they would die if they didn't sign the mortgage papers the bank put in front of them?

Sincerely,

Independent4tw:
"I bet you think that it was the publics fault for beleiving the banks."

In true liberal orthodoxy, my problems are always someone else's fault. Liberalism perpetuates a victim mentality.

Face it, while there were no doubt a small percentage of truly unscrupulous lenders who lied and misled people into signing loans they didn't understand, most analysis so far has concluded the vast, over-whelming majority of problem mortgages were entered into by people who who got greedy. Most were either trying to buy $500k homes on a $50k/yr salary and 0% down, or were caught up in the frenzy of speculation in hot markets like Arizona or Florida, buying 2nd, 3rd, 4th homes on 110% financing believing they would flip them in a short time and cash out.

Anyone who took personal finance in high school or their freshman year of college knew better than to enter into 100% financed homes, and knew enough to understand that adjustable rate mortgages, you know, adjust. And sometimes, rates go UP, and home values can go DOWN!

So while liberals would like to pretend that the people now going through foreclosures are all simply victims of big, greedy banks run amok, many of these people (including a couple friends of mine) knew better. Now they are paying the price for ignoring the long-known rules of conservative personal finance.

Any other liberal mentality you would like to expose for it's ridiculousness?

It turns out, Barack Obama knows a lot more about Bill Ayers! Obama is a LIAR!He wrote a strong endorsement for Bill Ayers book on parenting in 1997. Michelle Obama arranged meetings with Ayers and her husband! If Obama has the same views as Bill Ayers, GOD HELP US IF HE GETS IN TO OFFICE!

OBAMA IS DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CREDIT CRISIS! You guys better take notice of what is going on. Obama has been funded throughout his entire career by radicals. Bill Ayers raised millions of dollars from wealthy radicals wanting to reprogram our youth into overthrowing the government. Obama's college was bought and paid for by MUSLIMS WHO HATE THE JEWS AND AMERICA!! Obama was in charge of giving that money out tio groups lie the AMERICAN ARAB ACTION COMMITTEE!! They tought radical, left wing politics to these kids. THIS IS OUT OF A MOVIE!! Bill Ayers is quoting as saying "KILL ALL THE RICH PEOPLE, KILL YOUR PARENTS, THAT"S WHERE IT"S AT!" Instead of going the violent route they have gone the economic route. Obama was a leader at ACORN. Acorn bullied local banks and Fannie Mae into giving loans to loan income and bad credit borrowers. Those are the loans that have been the impetus for this crisis. Those borrowers couldn't pay back the loans!!! Obama was pushing this on a grass roots level as a community organizer!! You better take heed!! "Jill all the rich people" and "Tax all the rich people" are socialist views. This is engrained in Obama!! He is a socialist!! This is all verifiable!! Find out about the Annenberg Challenge!! Do not vote for SOCIALISM!!

Jerome Corsi due to give a press conference in Kenya regarding Obama was just arrested before his press conference. He is being silenced! THIS IS NO JOKE!!

Oh, and I didn't depend on big-daddy government to pave my path for me, so that probably had something to do with it."

I bet you think that it was the publics fault for beleiving the banks. If a doctor tells me to take pills, and I die, is that my fault too?

The banks told these people they could afford the loans, they took them, and they couldn't afford the loans. That is the bank's fault, and the fault of the people who deregulated the banks. You can send you worthless morgage papers to John McCain and the republican lobbyists with a thank you note attached.

Here in Oregon we have been putting a huge push on the Voter Registration , our dead line is the 14th. One thing we have really noticed over the last two weeks is a very large number of Republicans changing there party affiliation.

Most of them are Registering as Independents , and there seems to be a common theme with these people that goes something like this;

I am completely disgusted with the Republican Party.

I have no idea who i am voting for yet , but it sure as hell won't be John McCain.

There is a reason why McCain Adviser says that if we "talk about the Economy, we will lose!" That is because they have no good ideas on the economy for the Middle Class. Their ideas and solutions only benefit the rich, well-off and well-connected!

China Bush/McCainStyle: “We have been taught to fear and despise China as a communist threat. Simultaneously, our political leaders and the media perpetually preach the benefits of capitalism. Meanwhile the most clear and present threat from China is their capitalism. Made in China is the most published modern phrase. By investing the proceeds of their national productivity they have become the kings of capitalism and are now the primary source of goods worldwide. It is not their pretended politics of communism that we should be concerned about. We already have that here. We have been outsourced, out produced and our intellectual property is infringed, duplicated and returned to our shores by the containership load.” The Creditory System, Hari Heath

As an Obama supporter I find it encouraging that almost all of the McCain supporters are exceedingly infantile in their assertions. Even Sarah Palin's Swift Boat tactics are glaringly ridiculous. People watch her and are struck by her inanity, her shallowness and her cheerleader persona. Republicans managed to launch their presidential candidates much as they have managed the economy--with great ineptitude.

Blame everything on some one else, except yourself. Build on class issues using clever blames and class warfare struggles. Leave the nation defenseless, and without energy. Drive more business overseas, including any job hopes you may have. Continue corruption in Congress and Fannie Mae. Embrace your new Socialist government where the little guy truly has no opportunity. The government will tell you what to do and take care of you. Accept the huge lie. Most people I know, who may even like McCain, cannot stomach this Palin character. She was a terrible, terrible choice for John to make. Even if an American wants McCain, voting for him means supporting this Palin person, who no one really believes has the brains or class to run this country should McCain die in office. I think that’s where he made his mistake, and I think it will cost him the election. This latest attack by Palin, who accuses Obama of being a terrorist, is truly disgusting and divisive. No one is going to believe that, and it just makes McCain look desperate. When Obama wins, everyone will know he did it by overcoming such nasty personal attacks. He will be greatly admired and respected here, just like he is admired and respected all over the world. I’m voting Obama/Biden. I wouldn’t waste my vote on McCain/Palin. Voting for them is cynical and sad.

Sarah Palin and ‘first dudes’ political alliance with a terrorist who was murdered in 1993 during “a plastic explosives sale gone bad.”

“The fires of **** are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government… And I won’t be buried under their damn flag,” - Joe Vogler in 1991, Founder of the Alaska Independence Party.

Sarah congratulates the secession party only 6 months ago on their political gains.

Her husband, Todd, was a member the Alaskan Independence Party working for Alaska to secede from the United States. The director of Division of Elections in Alaska reported that Todd Palin registered in October 1995 to the Alaska Independence Party, a radical group that advocates for Alaskan secession from the United States, and remained a member until 2002, when he registered as undeclared while his wife ran for office.
