Obama Leaving Trail Thursday to See Ailing Grandmother

This undated photo released by Obama for America shows Barack Obama with his grandparents, Stanley Armour Dunham and Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham in New York City, during a visit with Obama, who was a student at Columbia University.

By Robert Barnes
PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Sen. Barack Obama will leave the campaign trail for two days later this week, heading for Hawaii to visit his grandmother, who is gravely ill.

Obama communications director Robert Gibbs told reporters tonight that Obama is canceling campaign events in Iowa and Wisconsin. He will leave for Hawaii on Thursday afternoon after an event in Indianapolis.

"Senator Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has always been one of the most important people in his life," Gibbs said. "Along with his mother and his grandfather, she raised him in Hawaii from the time he was born until the moment he left for college. As he said at the Democratic convention, she poured everything she had into him."

Dunham, 85, recently became ill, Gibbs said, and "in the last few weeks, her health has deteriorated to the point where her situation is very serious. It is for that reason that Senator Obama has decided to change his schedule on Thursday and Friday, so that he can see her and spend some time with her.''

Gibbs said Obama will return to the campaign on Saturday.

Dunham was released last week from a hospital and is now at her Honolulu apartment, Gibbs said. He would not detail her illness or answer a question about whether she is expected to live to see the election Nov. 4.

"I think everyone understands that the decision that Senator Obama is making to go to Hawaii underscores the seriousness of the situation," Gibbs said.

Gibbs said Obama's wife, Michelle, will not accompany him. He said Obama will travel with a few staff members and a small pool of reporters.

Remember his comment, "she is the last one"

Well, if he is going to claim his half sister, Mya, or his half brothers and sisters in Kenya, then she would not be the "last one", would she?

Well, she is the "last one" if he is referring to the WHITE relative he has. Sounds like a ploy to let all know he is distancing himself from the fact that he is half white.

I so appreicate that he cares so much for her; "the last one" and that she is sick, by herself in Hawaii. So important that all this information comes out NOW about his birth certificate, and if she dies, she cannot be deposed for the lawsuit now can she? HMMMM

There is going to be a Kool-Aid Drinking reponse on this I am so sure.

I am a Democrat, but I am voting with my brain and I do not want a Commander in Chief leading our troops, who has NO experience, and 143 days as Senator in office for the state of IL, the most corrupt state when it comes to politics; as one of our Governors sits in jail, and another being investigated in office as a Senator.

Palin has so much more experience than Obama it is ridiculous. What did Obama do for our state as a Democratic Senator, I will tell you...he showed up, that is it!

Palin has as much, if not more, experience than Teddy Roosevelt did when he ran for POTUS, but you know she is a woman, so she has to be stupid (sarcasm), and Obama not (more sarcasm), even though he did not even know how to vote 130 times, so he voted "present". GEE, Glad you could make it to your job, Senator Obama.

So go vote for him because he is half black, vote for him for his skin color and his racist wife (tapes are coming so you Kool-aid drinkers beware). There is no substance in Obama, and definitely the worst candidate this country has ever seen. He has no alliegance to our country nor is it recorded anywhere when he came back to the US from Indonesia. He certainly has no respect for the Christian Community (the mass murdering and rioting in Kenya because of Railia Odinja, is cousin of course he was not one of the "last ones". Don't believe it ask the Christian Missionaries who's churches were burned. Odinga is Muslim.

YOU vote because of the color not for country, because he is NOT experienced and the military knows it and most Americans who are not seduced by his oratory skills know it. You vote, and stay in denial, because you are not for this country only seeking racial power. He is the racist and so are you when you post that others are...Look the word up on the dictionery, before you accuse others of being what you are.

OBAMA = PHONY
When there is a man running for President who conceals his past because he is neck deep with cohorts of criminal backgrounds, domestic terrorists, highly questionable financial support sources, and a wife Michelle Obama whose final thesis at Princeton states her obsession with being black states “…. There was no doubt in my mind that as a member of the black community I am obligated to this community and will utilize all of my present and future resources to benefit the black community first and foremost”.
Its obvious Barack Obama has earned much of the blame for the failed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans made by pressure of the Acorn Organization during the early 90’s, and can be highly and directly attributed to it’s failure and our current economic meltdown. Having a Democratic Congress on the contribution payroll, Dodd, Reid, Frank, didn’t hurt him either.

The difference between Obama and McCain - Obama leaves his campaign to visit his gravely ill grandmother while McCain divorced his first wife since she was not "perfect". Shows me the difference between the two.

What a good person Obama is!
He takes time off the campaign to visit his sick grandmother, not to grab a spotlight(economic bill) like McCain!
Waht fools the conservatives are, with their gimmicks and foolish VP pick!
Liars and thieves, they wish to implement the white, pseudochristian, greedy plutocrat form of government of the 1980's.
Ronald Reagan is gone conservatives!
And he is not coming back.
The times, they are a changing, and the GOP is left behind to dream of the glory years.
Maybe you can join the KKK? Will that fill the void?

What is all the hoot about Toot?
Had Obama continued to campaign while his grandmother is seriously ill - his actions would have been deemed insensitive. Visiting his ailing grandmother is now met with claims of a political ploy by his opponents. This is not the same scenario as when McBush erratically suspended his campaigning for a photo op. My prayers go out to Toot.

Please feel better Mrs. Dunham! We would like for you to be able to witness your wonderful Grandson becoming president in a few weeks. you've done an incredible job of raising him, and he is a reflection of the job you've done! You should be proud.

To all of the negative bloggers: I'll pray for every last one of you, because you will need it. I feel sorry for you all because you're obviously not happy with yourselves; so you must put others down to feel better about your pitiful selves. It's a disgrace, but I realize that you're sick and need help. Do us all a favor and please get yourselves some help.

Good for him, it will cause a frenzy of talk, but it is so important for him to go see her. If, heaven forbid, she were to pass before Nov 4th and he had not taken this trip it would have eated away at him for the rest of his life. I have nothing but understanding and admiration for his choice.

Those of you out there who trying to turn this into something ugly should be ashamed. This is someone he loves who might not be here much longer, he is not hurting her, nor is he hoping for her to die so that he gets sympathy votes. I think he is praying his butt off that she holds on long enough to see him sworn into office so that she can see what she helped him become.

Bluntly, what evidence do you have for the claim that Obama didn't visit his mother prior to her death because he was campaigning? Given that she died almost a year before the first election in which he was a candidate, your claim seems unlikely on the face of it. Also, proving your claim, in the absence of a provable ability to accurately read minds, would only be possible if Obama himself was on the record saying he had been too busy campaigning to visit his mother before she died. Pardon me, but I think Obama is too smart a politician to have said that on the record even if it were true.

I do hope his grandmother recovers and the Lord would bless her. I am suspect of Obama's motives. He did not go and see his mother before she died, because he was compaigning. He is so cold and calculating in every action he takes. It isn't right to say mean things, but it sure is tempting when it is a mean person your talking about. I'm kinda like Mrs Krachit when it's time to toast Scrooge! It really is hard to say something nice about some people and convential wisdom says then to say nothing, but I am a Christian and I will HONESTLY pray for him and his grandmother. Maybe he knows that after what he did to his mother that there is no do overs.

The McCain campaign likes to whine about so-called "attacks" on Palin or her family. Will they tell their supporters that attacks about Obama's visit to his grandmother are inappropriate? Naw, that would be too classy.

A visit to Free Republic is disgusting. A few examples of our god-loving, christian, "real" Americans:

"If she dies, he wins."

"Maybe in her twilight, she is starting to tell the truth about the earlier days, and Barry is going back to silence her."

"Strangely, Granny dies on Friday before the election with Funeral scheduled for Monday."

"Yeah, they poisoned her and she is about to pass on due to Obama’s need to ascend to the Presidency. But he won’t succeed because the truth will out. That’s how God made the world."

This is the "real" America of McCain and Palin. Why would any country in the world want to emulate us?

It is sad that folks cannot ever let politics aside and allow some one to tend to the business of being human.

I am sometimes a partisant in a political discussion but to deny some one to take care of those one loves with out others mouthing hatred is a posture that I wish would die out as mankind progresses.

The world really is a small town and some have small minds. My own parents were the "salt of the earth" types, who knew that one's privacy especially when it came to family matters was sacred and should not be held up to ridicule and speculative gossip, which is much of what, the content of the comments submitted here are.

My thoughts are with Sen Obama , his Grandmother and his family.
I also will try to think kindly on those weak inviduials who can not rise above the muddiness of their own insecurity.

To those of you who would say the evil things that I have read on this board during this difficult time for Obama; congratulations on being the epitome of the typical McCain/Palin supporter.

If Obama says, "typical white person" it is a heinous slander against his own beloved grandmother.

If Obama has a different name he is a "Muslim".

If an Obama supporter has radical views, Obama himself is a "terrorist".

If Obama supports the government stepping in to help people to recover from this dire economic crisis, he is "socialist".

Those of you who espouse this garbage have allowed McCain and Palin's words to go in your ears and come directly out of your mouth without the benefit of stopping at a brain.

HAWAII LAWSUIT:10/21-The Hawaii Supreme Court was petitioned to order Obama's secret birth records released yesterday,Monday. (SUPREME COURT OF HAWAI’I DOCKET NUMBER: 29414)

How did Obama respond? He suddenly discovered that his grandmother, who suffers from osteoporosis, had taken a fall and had been released from the hospital last week, when he and Michelle showed no interest in her, needs his immediate attention now...

According to a campaign spokesperson, her health had deteriorated "to the point where her situation is very serious." If the situation is so dire, why isn't Michelle accompanying Obama instead of her going on the campaign stump?

PENNA LAWSUIT:10-/21-Civil Action No.08-cv-4083-According to Rule 36 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, a party upon whom requests for admissions have been served must respond, within 30 days, or else the matters in the requests will be automatically deemed conclusively admitted for purposes of the pending action. The Federal Rules require that a response to a request for admissions be served within the 30-day time limit, and Barack Obama and the DNC have not done so.
So, Berg has filed two motions:(1)A motion requesting an immediate order deeming his request for admissions served upon Barack Obama and the DNC on September 15 admitted by default. (2.)A motion requesting an expedited ruling and/or hearing on Berg’s motion deeming the request for admissions served upon Obama and the DNC admitted.

He(Berg)simply wanted answers or objections, he said, and instead received nothing. Rule 36, according to Berg, is fairly cut-and-dry.

I and many others wish his grandmother well.

But...the question still remains. Is Obama going to see his grandmother or plead with the court not to have his birth and adoption records opened? It seems rather coincidental that Andy Martin has a motion to have his records opened, and Obama has decided to travel to HI.

When Senator Obama posted his birth certificate on his website, he, himself, invited these questions and challenges to his personal records. Andy Martin is with in his right to challenge and ask the court to open his birth and adoption records..

Say what you will, and many of you will, but we the people have the right to know the truth before we vote.

I think that Senator Obama's trip to be by the side of his grandmother at this time says even more about his commitment and overall judgment. And I must say that when my parents needed me in their last years, no matter what was taking place in my life, I was there for them. I managed work, law school, my husband, and home, as well. Not trying to toot my own horn, but when push comes to shove, family is one of the most important core values in America, as it should be.

Senator Obama is not only ready to lead our country in a new direction, but more politically correct, the correct direction for the good of ALL Americans, know matter what their ethnic background might be. My prayers are with Mrs. Dunham and I would hope that John McCain would show some sense of decency with his continuous unrelenting attacks on Senator Obama to show his sympathy/empathy, which ever he can come up with.

Let's take this time to be human, not republican or democrat. Let's recognize the importance of our grandparents and give Mr.Obama the respect he and his beloved grandmother deserve. It's such a painful thing to lose someone you cherish and love. I cannot imagine how difficult and painful it must be, espeically for Mr.Obama and his family. The timing of his grandmother's illness couldn't be worse, but life and death wait for no one.

IF PALIN IS SO QUALIFIED...

Then why didn't she run for president?

Makes you wonder what the Republican Primary would have looked like? ...

"I've been Governer for TWO WHOLE MONTHS and I'm READY to be President"

---

18 Million people for Obama in the primaries because of his vision for America not his experience.

Palin got one vote and the only vision I know of from her is her view of Russia.

Those who use this article in an effort to solidify McCain/Palin’s ticket are shameless people. They are the hypocrites who proudly carry the slogan that “family matters”, but when it comes to the opposing candidate’s family, they show a proud contempt.

The fact that Senator Obama leaves his campaign to be at her grandmother’s bedside describes an intense feeling of love, devotion and gratitude.

This is a time of sorrow, not of politics as usual or “Country First.”.

Your political savvy is off course. What you suspect (accuse?) Senator Obama of is a Republican trick that Senator Obama is far above. You don't even have to read his book to know how important his grandmother is to him, just listen to him talk about her. He does not need to seek fake sympathy for political gain.

Here in Hawaii the family is at the center of all things. Sen. Obama is showing us the values he learned from his upbringing here on O'ahu by taking time off to visit his ailing tutu, even if it is critical to his campaign that he be out on the trail. Hopefully we, his supporters, can keep the momentum going until such time as he is able to return to his campaign. As for those who think it's some sort of trick, I hope your kids and grandkids are less cynical when it comes time for them to visit you. Would that all children and grandchildren were so thankful and thoughtful.

As others have said, I certainly hope that she recovers and can see her grandson sworn in as POTUS. If she's already signed up for it, maybe she can cast an early absentee vote. I say this because, in the last presidential election, my own dear father was trying his best to live until we got our absentee ballots. He wanted desperately to vote against another term for Dubya. Unfortunately, he died a week before our absentee ballots arrived in the mail.

Godspeed Barack. And aloha to the entire family.

NODEBRIS SAID: "politial savvy might be synonymous with d*ckhead"

It is an absolute outrage tha you are so deep in the tank for your candidate (Obama) that you would resort to such a foul expression and indignant response. Your response is right in line with all the people in camp Obama. If others say something about Obama that you don't like be it true or not you get belligerant and go on the attack. Hitler was the architect of this same kind of backlash on those who opposed his ideology and along came the NAZIS to do his bidding. I am not going to stand by and tolerate being called foul names over a Presidential candidate. You, my friend need to check yourself because you are so wrappped up in worshipping a man that you don't realize that God in control now when it's all said and done God will still be control. Keep in mind that Obama and Axelrod are Chicago politicians and know what to do to "run out the clock"...they did it to Hillary. Family is so at the core of Hawaii values that the Hawaiian word for family, ohana is a word everybody here knows and it extends beyond relatives. Hawaii is very proud of their Hawaii born son. The polls indicate the loyalty. There are Obama Ohana stickers. So in that way you can take the Presidential candidate out of Hawaii, but you can't take the sensibility of ohana away. It is a time for genuine aloha and goodness from America.

He wants to appear defenseless because he is at grannie's. Obama has no defense for his socal policies so Axelrod probably advised him to run to grandma while at the same time "run out the clock" by doing so. Congratulations, Team Obama, we've still got two-plus weeks until Election Day and you're already destroying jobs. After last week's now-notorious encounter with Joe the Plumber, Obama's media foot soldiers were dispatched with a simple mission: destroy Joe. On Sunday's Fox and Friends, Joe announced their success; his business has been shut down.

Thanks to the intrepid reporting of journalists who've obviously lost all sense of perspective, it turns out Joe has been fixing Ohioans' plumbing without a government-issued license. Talk about irony. Joe came under fire for humiliating Obama by noting his tax plans interfere with Joe's American Dream. He wanted to buy his plumbing company and expand it, but higher taxes on small businesses threaten to turn that dream into a nightmare. The left, in other words, used Big Government to silence Joe Citizen for speaking ill of Big Government.

I pray for Obama's grandmother's recovery. Ultimately, as Obama knows, it is in God's hands.

The McCain campaign will do what it does. Whatever they do will not move the campaign numbers one way or the other unless they get totally tasteless, which is a condition close to where they are now.

With the passing of Joe Biden's mother-in-law and with Obama's seriously ill grandmother, the Democrats have really had to show their stamina and their values. You have to search back a ways to find any similar tragic events during such a campaign.

May Obama have a safe flight to Honolulu.

Miss dunham,

You have given the world a gift and a good chance of saving itself.
So be at peace and if you don't make it to see your grandson elected, than know this much right now: Mission accomplished.

Perhaps McCain will call off his attacks, but judging by his past performances, he will look upon this as a golden opportunity.
He can't be associated with any criticism but that's no problem. Now will come his worst, his hole card, whatever he has been saving.

Is this the same Grandmother who became the kicking stone when the Senator was caught "not hearing" the sermons at his Chicago Church. The kicking stone became a handy diversion at the time.

gfriday: you are disgusting.

Those who have read " Dreams From My Father" will know Obama's grandmother by her affectionate nickname "Toot." And, you will know what a significant figure she is in Obama's life. Obama's respect and love for his entire family whether here in the US or in Hawaii, Indonesia or Kenya runs deep and true. Obama is a mensch.

I wonder what the first ghoulish comment by a right wing nut will be.

Don't be ghoulish, gfriday. Wellstone died on a campaign trip in difficult weather. Not remotely similar (or funny).

The sign of an admirable man. It would be nice if Tutu could live to see Obama become President.

Isn't this how they got Wellstone on a plane?
