Obama's Primetime Buy Comes at Bargain Price

Barack Obama's presidential campaign is getting a bargain for the half-hour of Oct. 29 primetime it's bought on CBS and NBC.

The Democratic presidential candidate's camp is paying under $1 million to each network to run the programming it will produce for the first half-hour of primetime that Wednesday night, less than a week before the election. This is considerably less than the networks would otherwise get for the 10-11 ad "units" they run during that half hour, between 8 and 8:30 p.m.

Obama is not getting a price break; the campaign will be charged what's called the "lowest unit cost," in compliance with federal law.

What will Obama get for his not quite $2-million? Wednesday night at 8 has not been a ratings bonanza; this week, CBS averaged 7.2 million voting age (18 years and up) viewers for the Julia Louis-Dreyfus sitcom "The New Adventures of Old Christine," while NBC clocked 5.7 million viewers in that age bracket for its resuscitation of "Knight Rider." Meanwhile, ABC averaged another 5.2 million voting-age viewers with "Pushing Daisies" and Fox another 9.2 million with "Bones."

The Obama campaign is talking to the other major broadcasters about buying time, though no deals are done.

In that particular half hour on Oct. 29, Fox may or may not be airing Game 6 of the World Series. And ABC at this moment is scheduled to air its struggling dramedy "Pushing Daisies." "Daisies" is one of last year's freshman series that got hurt by the 100-day writers strike and which the network is attempting to re-launch this fall, but so far, without much luck. ABC execs may believe there is opportunity for "Pushing Daisies" to get more sampling on Oct. 29 if the network does not join in a so-called "roadblock" buy by the Obama campaign.

With CBS and NBC's scripted programming scrubbed to make way for Obama, Fox possibly airing baseball and CW running the reality show "America's Next Top Model," "Pushing Daisies" would be the only scripted series in the timeslot on broadcast network TV.

Significantly, Oct. 29 is the anniversary of Black Tuesday, Oct. 29, 1929 -- the notorious "worst day" in stock market history that began a long downturn that didn't end until June of 1932.

The Obama campaign program airing on even two broadcast networks just six days before the election puts the squeeze on John McCain's camp to make some kind of similar move. Both camps, for instance, purchased a national ad during NBC's telecast of the highly rated Summer Olympics in Beijing.

But McCain's campaign agreed to accept federal matching funds, which limits his campaign spending in the weeks leading up to the election.

McCain is out of touching not only in economic but also in modern technology. His thoughts are old with 17th century action and deeds. If a person doesn’t know how to use email become president, it is unfortunate for our country to combat with world. He could have selected Britney or Paris Hilton for his VP as he put in his commercial. Sarah Palin is similar to them.

Where did his funds come from? I'll tell you. People like me. As a registered Libertarian, I'd NEVER donated to a political campaign before. I donated $200. Multiply that by 10 million angry Americans like myself and, presto, $2 Billion.

He's spending all the money because he needs a "closet-racist" proof margin. A 5 point lead for Obama in the Gallup going into the election likely means a McCain victory. Getting the Republican message out there to get a filibuster proof majority may also be an incentive.

Of course, confronted with facts the right will simply resort to shouting "Bomb Obama" and "Terrorist". No wonder you're losing.

I think it is incredible that Barack's campaign has raised so much money ( from average Americans contributions)! Just look what American can do when we all finally start to pull together! I can't wait to see what we can do when we actually have a solid leader in charge of our country! I know that the next presidency will be a challenging one, but under Obama, I have faith that we (as a nation) will finally be able to rebuild our hope...
seriously - I LOVE AMERICA, but it has been incredibly embarrassing (and economically painful) having GWB as our president for the last 8 years. I would be insane to choose to sign up for 4 more under McCain (who agreed with GWB 90% of the time). I can't believe McCain when he says he will bring change to America. WTF did he take so long to start? Just curious...

Getting back on topic, the prime-time buy makes sense because it will (a) help Obama seal the deal with undecided voters, and (b) increase chances of a landslide victory for the Democrats, which will make it easier to turn ideas and promises into Congressional legislation--something that's vital if Obama wants to change the direction of the country (as demanded by 86% of the voters in one recent poll).

We are seeing the rightful heir to the political machines that have come every twenty years or so to buy elections.

My favorite was Joseph Kennedy warning "Don't buy a single vote more than necessary. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for a landslide". Which will probably be replaced by the vicious skill of the Obama machine. And the Networks win too since they will get to deduct the millions in difference they should have charged another time buyer as a political contribution.

You can't make this stuff up.

Well he out spent others in the primaries and still lost them. Now he can spend even more and try to buy the Presidency. How sad that it takes this kind of money to get into office. Has he spent a billion yet ?? You know CBS and NBC will give him the best deal they have- they are in the tank for him big time. CNN will be next !!! Can we expect those Obama zombies Andrea Mitchell,Keith Olbermann and Chrissy Matthews to tell us how their legs are tingling after Barry speaks ??? Folks, go out for dinner those nights and stay for a few after dinner drinks- this speech will be more of the same. Barry will tell us about hope and love and change and rainbows and we have heard the words a million times now.

for a guy who is supposed to have this thing wrapped up, he sure is spending alot of money. money that he wilkl not disclose where it came from. this guy is a paper suit. if he gets elected, we will have in effect wrote a blank check to the democrats. From 2001 through 2007, total government spending increased a whopping 47 percent, from $1.86 to $2.73 trillion. It didn't do that all at once, but rather, grew each year an average of 6.2 percent.

The worst year during that time period for government growth was 2002, when it increased 7.9 percent. The best was, perhaps surprisingly, 2007, the last year that was mostly baked by the Republicans. Government spending only advanced 2.8 percent that year. Republicans tried to reform themselves, but did too little too late.

How did the Democrats do? Spending has advanced this year an astronomical 8.3 percent, to $2.96 trillion, exceeding even the worst of the Bush years. Total spending this year was more than a trillion dollars higher than it was when Bush took office in January 2001, and more than $200 billion of that increase was accomplished in just the last year.

If Obama stood for the poor he'd take the money and donate it to their cause, not buy air-time to worship himself.

You people who thought Bush was nuts are in for a big surprise if Obama gets elected. I know you're hoping that Obama will erase the constitution and build a new country based on the free and legal use of narcotics, same sex marriage, pedophilia, and the denial of God, but just wait and see what you are doing to the country.
I personally won't forget, nor will millions of other decent hard working Americans.

If you think for one second the majority is going to be ruled by the minority, you'd better think again.

We've heard a lot lately about the "Bradley Effect" which says that people will claim they'll vote for a Black, but actually do the opposite. I believe the contrary is true. I'm convinced that many folks are saying they'll vote for McCain, in order to avoid angering their more rabid Republican friends. In the privacy of the voting booth, however, Obama will get the nod. Call it wishful thinking if you will, but November 4th will prove me right.

You are absolutely correct except not the racism is black on white, not the white on black racism you believe.

Proof is in the facts. 95% of black voters are voting for Obama while over 50% of white are voting for Obama. Hmmmmmm. Seems like whites are far more open to a black president than you believe they are.

Secondly, the fact that Obama's political career survived the Rev. Wright issue shows just how accepting whites are of a black president. Do you believe a white president who was a 22 year member of the KKK could be as accepted as Obama? What if he said he never heard a single racist comment in the KKK for the entire 22 years (like Obama said of Rev. Wright)? What if he was married and his kids babtized by the KKK leader (like Obama was from Rev. Wright)?

Third, what about Obama's association with Acorn and Bill Ayers and his unethical real estate deals (they were probably illegal).

I think whites have been extremely easy on Obama because he's black yet blacks continue to cry racism. Come on, stop with the lies!!!!

True, there is no Constitutional mandate for health care. But there is a mandate in the founding ideals of our nation - the Declaration of Independence:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness".

This is a concept developed over centuries and termed as man's "Inalienable Rights".

John Locke provided Thomas Jefferson with the inspiration for our Declaration of Independence when he wrote that "no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions."

Now before you jump all over this as being "communist" or "socialist" - I'm Republican.

What the founders were saying is simply that the Government must strive to protect all citizens' life, freedom, and their material wealth (happiness). This is what we hold dear in our great land.

This doesn't require that the Government provide a taxpayer funded healthcare system that is free to all (even though virtually all other Western nations do this at a fifth of the cost that we typically pay - In America we cherish our duty to pay for the private sector's profits... the pursuit of happiness, remember?).

It simply means that the current practice of accountants denying claims over a doctor's objection should end. It also means that insurance companies have a fundamental obligation to insure everyone who wants coverage - regardless of preexisiting conditions. Insurance company accountants and adjusters levy what amounts to a death sentence to thousands of Americans each year. If you're poor if would cost them too much, sorry, you die.

This isn't like flood insurance, car insurance, homeowner's insurance, or other policies that simply replace material objects. This is about providing a way to protect you life.

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

This actually hits home for me personally. My wife has a preexisting condition. It's a simple thing that has never been an issue and does not require medical care. But there's a 5% chance that it could some day and that it would be costly. So she cannot get coverage unless I get an employer sponsored group plan. The company I worked for closed the division that I worked from. I no longer have an employer sponsored plan. In a pure free market healthcare system, my wife's life is in danger for simple, treatable illnesses.

My sister was hospitalized last year for pneumonia. You know what the tab was? $15K for a 3 day stay in the hospital. Just a bed, an IV, and some antibiotics. $15 friggin thousand dollars for that.

Once COBRA runs out, we're one illness like that away from bankruptcy or death. Life & the pursuit of Happiness are both denied.

While I do not fully agree with Obama's healthcare plan, I do not like the current options in America. And I see great peril to millions of working Americans with McCain's plan - but if you're already rich, no worries.

There's no guarantee of happiness in the Constitution either thirdstop. The one word so many people seem to overlook is pursuit, as in THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. Hey, while this country is great it is not a Utopia. Apply yourself and work (I know that word is abhorrent to some out there)hard and you can find that happiness. Hell, half the fun is getting there! Of course Obama's trying to appeal to the "sit on your ass" crowd that has been looking to government for it's existence ever since LBJ and his "Great Society" started the Democratic "buy a constituency with taxpayer dollars" program. Now he is trying to foist off the idea that healthcare is a "right".

Clinton inherited a robust military and intelligence system. He presided over the RIF of nearly 30% of our military and intel services, but hey it was the end of history, who needed all these useless warmongering neanderthals, right? And it takes years to rebuild intelligence networks. Last GAO survey found that 25% of current intelligence functions are carried out by contractors, the majority of whom were RIF in the 90's.

GHWB major failure was in leaving a job unfinished due to international political pressure, but hey, that's how we get a New World Order.

GW's failings are too numerous to list.

But if you want to lay blame, and point fingers, lets be accurate.

So the bombings in 1993 were George H W Bush's fault. I guess he too had decimated our intelligence and Clinton of course didn't have time to rebuild it in a month.

So GHWB is the true culprit for the 2001 bombings. He so decimated our intelligence that the next two Presidents didn't have time to rebuild it.

That's kind of stupid. Nine months was plenty of time if GWB would have cared to listen to the people who were watching.

The Cole happened on Clinton's watch. It was his responsibility. He didn't respond because it happened after the GWB election. Intelligence as to the actors didn't come until a couple months into Bush's presidency. Bush didn't respond. He was focused on Iraq.

Well I'm glad you would take responsibility for an act that depending upon time frame would not be your fault. If the the brakes failed immediately you could not in good conscience be held accountable. Nine months is a large amount of time but it is not long enough to rebuild an intelligence network, especially something as complicated HUMINT, which in this country we are not actually very good at due to our love for the shiny toys involved in ELINT. The fact of the matter is intel is collected and analyzed by human beings and people are fallible.
Now Republicans have argued that the 93 WTC bombing was Clinton's fault, but those accusations were made for purely cynical political calculation. That failure occurred for the same reasons that made this country great, the unprecedented freedoms we have in this country, in other words, we do not have Big Brother looking over our shoulders (at least we didn't use to). Law enforcement has to right every single time, terrorist only have to be lucky once.
If we want to look at ignored warnings we don't have to look far, USS Cole bombing and the bombing of our embassies in Africa.
History may look upon Clinton as a good president, but militarily and intelligence wise, he was an absolute disaster.

Name one thing for which he has taken the blame. At least, when we lost over 600 troops under Reagan he took responsibility.

Now the economic meltdown is the Democrats' fault. They have had control of Congress for less than 2 years. Before that, Repubs had a majority in both houses and veto power in the White House. Will they ever take the blame for anything.

Fortunately, the American people are smart enough to know who was in charge.

Yes. The moment I take over responsibility of the bus, the passengers become my responsibility. I need to check the brakes, the turn signals and the lights before I take responsibility for the passengers.

Clinton, on the other hand took office in 1993 in January. The World Trade Center was bombed in February 1993. Republicans have argued that the bombing was a breach of American security that was Clinton's fault. I would say that's a high threshold, but, actually, it was on his watch.

It just came out that Sarah Palin broke the law by violating the ethics act when she took action against someone who she has a personal interest in. It was found she has abused her power as governor. This was done by a bipartisan committee of 10 Repubs and 4 Democrats. She was found to have violated the public trust. The prosecutor in this case is well respected. Do your research before you believe the spin the McCain campaign will try to put on this. The McCain campaign has tried everything imaginable to stall this investigation. They even tried to put out their own conclusions that supposedly cleared Palin but all of this effort by the McCain campaign was for nothing and is not true. This campaign is not even elected yet and already they have been found guilty of abusing power. Reminds me of same things this current admin has been doing that people want to be rid of.

Why is it that the majority of anti-Obama rhetoric on this thread come off sounding as if the people making them are mere caricatures of actual people, one would think it could be a disinformation campaign except it's too blatant, than again maybe I'm supposed to think that way, but than again maybe I'm just paranoid.

Just in case you think I am pro-Obama, I am not, but neither am I a Republican. I can not in good faith support Obama because he espouses Socialist beliefs, where in the Constitution are we guaranteed the right to good health-care? You either have no idea what you're talking about or you've been in a cave for 25 years.

Before you squawk about the Fairness Doctrine, you might want to investigate how it was eliminated, and by whom. Then you might not be so shocked.

It is a fact that the Fairness Doctrine, when it was in effect, was never responsible for the suppression of any specific political point of view.

Today's "Republicans" seem to be making all kinds of ludicrous claims about it, for example, not being responsible for its creation, for its elimination, and wild inaccurate claims about its effects on the media.

In fact, if a television network chose to do so, it would be within its rights (FCC rules and the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, modulo any corporate by-laws and contracts of course) to air nothing but pro-Obama propaganda 24/7 from now until election day.

That would probably work against Senator Obama, since most of his supporters are educated people who see through propaganda and are not susceptible to advertising gimmicks.

Many of the comments here are made by people who are simply repeating propaganda, saying things that they believe to be true despite having no evidence whatsoever to support their assertions.

Your own comment is a perfect example. Apparently, you have been told that a "Fairness Doctrine" exists which requires "equal time" in the FCC-licensed media. You appear to have accepted this notion with no reason, but your prejudice allows you to be persuaded to accept falsehoods.

Even being made aware of this, it is doubtful that you will do any introspection to learn of other false notions you believe.

What law was that, specifically, and why are you complaining here instead of to the FBI or the Attorney General or something? You have evidence of a crime but you haven't taken your evidence to Law Enforcement? That makes you an accessory, I think.

Out with it: What do you know, and when and how did you learn it? In a deposition, under oath please, to a standard of evidence admissible in a federal court. You have accused a sitting US Senator of some undefined crime. Tell us what law was broken, when and by whom, and then tell us what evidence you have to support this accusation. Under oath, please. What if foreigner, a married man of 25 with a pregnant wife gets a scholarship to go to an American University. He deserts his wife, meets and has sex with a 17 year old girl. She becomes pregnant and has a child. The married man leaves to enter another school 5 thousand miles away, leaving the parents to care for the young child. This married man then has more children with his wife and 2 other woman.

This child grows up and writes a book, "Dreams from my Father", has nothing but praise for his father's actions, virtues and accomplishments. Praise for the father, brief mention of his mother, grandparents or his step father who raised him, sent him to the finest schools.
I can understand the difficulty of Obama's situation, but to praise a polygamist and in this day and age, a 25 year old has sex with a 17 year old.....not worthy of praise.

I would like someone to please tell me what Obama has done to deserve this position? He has only told people what they want to hear; i.e. people can anything they want with no sacrifice. It is what young people want to hear, it is what people who lack the will to work wan to hear and it is told with lofty rhetoric and empty promises.
The actions of ACORN of which he was a long time member of the board and thus responsible for setting the tone is only the tip of the iceberg which the media has failed to examine. Gov. Palin has had more scrutiny from the press than Obama, in this case Hillary was correct.

But many voted for him anyway. BTW voting is an individual decision the no one can force you to make.

GWB never gave us any indication that he had the grey matter run this country. Guess what? He didn't.

His policies have gotten us where we are now. He decided to go to war. He pushed the tax cuts and subsequent borrowing. He was the only person necessary to control spending but he abdicated his responsibility. Then he was re-elected because of what, he was against abortion? How stupid.

No one can force you to vote either way. Do the research and select the candidate you think can make the best decisions.

I'm watching Pushing Daisies on DVD and absolutely love it. However, I haven't watched ABC since they aired the right wing 9/11 mockumentary so I'm going to have to wait for the DVD of season two.

I will definitely watch the Barack Obama show. It will be interesting to see what the next President of the United States does with his first address to the nation.

I am not a republican, I don't particularly care for John McCain, but I do not favor Barack Obama either.

And I am frightened. Not frightened I will lose my home; people have lived without homes for thousands of years. I am frightened for things to come.

I am not angry at a person, but rather a group of politicians who believe that the average person is too stupid to make decisions for themselves. I used to believe that was not true. I still want to believe in a democratic republic where individuals have some intelligence.

But why must people believe anything a pretty politician tells them? I can make better decisions regarding my welfare myself.

I don't want everything to be black but I do think America deserves to have the best. Obama is the best. I've obviously exclusively voted for white candidates for President until this election.

Finally, I am a Christian father of 6 married for 25 years. I don't believe in abortion. I also don't believe in drinking alcohol or adultery. I think its a left-wing idea that the government would legislate any of those things. The government can't just outlaw sin and expect that this would solve all social ills.

McCain loses my respect as a Christian father because he committed adultery, left his first wife Carol in her 40s to marry a rich young Cindy in her 20s. Carol was left to raise 3 children alone. That's guilt by his actions not his associations.
