Palin's High Stakes Night

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin waves as she departs Washington University following a "walkthrough" of tonight's debate site October 2, 2008 in St. Louis. (Scott Olson/Getty Images)

By Dan Balz
ST. LOUIS -- Just a month ago, Sarah Palin's trademarks were spunk, lipstick and the appealing persona of a hockey mom juggling career and family with confidence and good humor. Today her trademarks are Tina Fey's skewering caricatures on "Saturday Night Live" and Katie Couric's embarrassment-inducing interviews on CBS News

Which Palin shows up on the stage at Washington University in St. Louis tonight likely will determine the Alaska governor's future. Much focus rightly is on whether she will be a drag on John McCain's chances of winning the presidency, but as much should be on the question of what kind of future she may have in the Republican Party.

The two sides of Palin's candidacy were on display this morning at a St. Louis focus group conducted by Democratic pollster Peter Hart for the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Some were attracted by what they saw as a person who is strong, real and down to earth. Others saw her as lacking the basic credentials for the job to which she aspires.

She impressed Republican and McCain supporter Dawn Pashia as someone with the potential to be an excellent vice president. Chris Spitzer, an independent who voted for Bush and is now undecided, called her a "good strong woman" with "tremendous potential."

Sue Aldridge, an Obama supporter, said Palin "frightens me." "This isn't on-the-job training," she said. Kurt Wachtner, another Obama supporter, said he too found the prospect of her becoming vice president scary. "McCain might not survive the first term," he said. "She might have to take over. I don't think she would do a good job at all."

But when the 12-member group was asked a direct question about the confidence they placed in her, Palin's weaknesses became apparent. The group was split five-five between McCain and Barack Obama, with two undecided. But when moderator Hart asked the group how they would vote in November if the choice were just between Palin and Biden, they split eight to four in favor of the Delaware senator.

The arc of Palin's brief career as a national politician is certainly one more amazing story in the broader narrative of the 2008 campaign. She was the surprise of surprises when McCain introduced her to the nation. She was assaulted by criticism, much of it from the left. She suffered through the anguish of the disclosure that her unmarried, teenaged daughter was pregnant. But she proved stronger in the first weeks than her critics.

She delivered a sterling performance at the Republican convention. She instantly became a Republican rock star who eclipsed the man who selected her. She was the conservative that conservatives believed they had been looking for. The impact on the presidential contest was evident, as McCain got a clear bounce after his convention, with his party finally energized and enthusiastic.

Since then, she has worn badly. Overly protected by McCain's handlers, shielded too much from the media, Palin has struggled mightily to demonstrate that she has the depth and breadth Americans want in someone on a national ticket. The latest Washington Post-ABC News poll underscored the rapid disintegration of Hurricane Sarah. Six in 10 voters said she does not have the experience to serve as president and about one in three said they are less inclined to back McCain because of her.

Her story has made Thursday's debate with Joe Biden one of the most talked about and eagerly anticipated events of the campaign. Rarely has a debate been so much about just one of the participants.

Twenty years ago, Dan Quayle showed that vice presidential debates don't matter. His disastrous performance against Lloyd Bentsen proved to be no obstacle to George H. W. Bush in the 1988 presidential campaign. Despite the skewering Quayle took from Bentsen -- "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy!" -- Bush went on to defeat Michael Dukakis easily that November.

From that experience, it seems clear that McCain's fortunes are mostly in his own hands. Given Palin's current descent, he should hope that's still the case. But clearly, with many voters concerned about McCain's age, Palin's candidacy has the potential to create some drag on his candidacy.

That's an obvious concern for McCain and his team for Thursday's debate. But what Palin also should worry about is what her candidacy can mean to her own political career. Only weeks ago, she was touted as a future conservative leader of the Republican Party, whether McCain wins or loses.

Now she needs a performance in Thursday's debate to prove that's still the case. That's why the stakes here in St. Louis are very large, both for McCain and for Palin.

Bcamp55 - "Can anyone direct me to a single article actually written by Obamoron while he was the Editor of the Law Review?"

Bcamp55 - "Nice way to tacitly agree that Obamaron never wrote a single piece while "Editor".

Apparently you don't read much. It is common in virtually every printed media to have commentary written (not merely edited) by "The Editor".

As a matter of fact genius, it is usually reserved for the most important issues of the time.

I can hear the spin now - "Well, when Obamaron was Editor, there were no important issues, so there".

BTW - You should change your name to DEMOCRATSAREIGNORNAT"

No student editor of the Harvard Law Review writes articles. Those are reserved for professors, judges, and practitioners. The fact that you cannot find any of Obama's work that may have been published in the review is not surprising since all student work is unsigned.

Also, if you choose to call someone ignorant, it is generally more effective and less ironic if you spell it correctly.

Last time I checked, the Constitutional requirements for a person to be president was:

a) that you are over a certain age and,
b) a natural born citizen.

All this yammering about "experience" and "qualifications" is nothing more than flatulence. Sarah Palin meets all the constitutional requirements. She *IS* qualified. I, however, will not vote for her ticket because of the only thing that matters: their (McCain/Palin) policies. The Republicans are fighting tooth and nail to turn this country into 19th century England and I will not let them succeed. As for the rest of you yammering on about age, experience, and qualifications, please remove your headquarters from your hindquarters and get on task. Thank you.

We do not need someone who is 'folksy & trite' with our world as it is now. We need a strong candidate who understands what is going on from a regional national global level. Palin just does not have it. It would be lovely to have a woman as VP, but she is not the one at all. The USA is in a challenging way. We need strong leadership we have not had it for over 8 years.

Bush, in his 8 years of presidency, ignored the people of America, lied to them, and caused the economic crisis with his failed policies. Reminds me of Andrew Jackson and the presidents before the Depression.

The supposedly experienced McCain voted for needless war. With his great foreign policy credentials he could not correctly name the ideologically competing factions in Iraq without Lieberman constantly correcting him. America does not need that kind of presidential experience, we've had 8 years of it already and desite 8 years of OJT training he still has not learned the job.

Insured deposits increase came from lobbying efforts of small banks not McCain nor Obama; both used the moment as politically attractive.

McCain and Couric Spar on Gotcha Journalism

COURIC: Over the weekend, Gov. Palin, you said the U.S. should absolutely launch cross-border attacks from Afghanistan into Pakistan to, quote, "stop the terrorists from coming any further in." Now, that's almost the exact position that Barack Obama has taken and that you, Sen. McCain, have criticized as something you do not say out loud. So, Gov. Palin, are you two on the same page on this?

MCCAIN: Now, just a minute, Katie. I have to step in here. That's another example of the media's "gotcha journalism"...

COURIC: But, it was a question from a citizen. How is a citizen asking a candidate a question an example of what you call "gotcha journalism?"

MCCAIN: Because it was hard, Katie.

We don't want Gov. Palin to be asked questions, unless she is prepared for them. When she is prepared, as she will be before the debate, she sounds intelligent, knowledgeable and feisty. But when she has not been prepared, she sounds lost and incoherent.

We can't have people asking her questions when she has not had time to be prepared with an answer.

COURIC: But, Sen. McCain, I have to say, you are 72-years old. Actuarial preditions show that if you were to be elected, Gov. Palin would have a 1 in 5 chance of actually becoming President. These are perilous times--unprecedented crises in financial markets, tensions across a wide range of critical foreign policy arenas. Shouldn't we have a Vice President, and a potential President, who actually understands these issues, beyond the preparation necessary for a debate?

Here is her response to a question on the economy, a critical issue, you would agree, Sen. McCain:

COURIC: Why isn't it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries; allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?

PALIN: That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health-care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the—it's got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health-care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, scary thing. But one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today, we've got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that.

COURIC: That answer, Sen. McCain, as noted by Fareed Zakaria, is incoherent.

MCCAIN: Yes. (nodding his head).

COURIC: Well, isn't it actually important that a potential President actually comprehend issues? That is, beyond debate preparation?

MCCAIN: No, Katie. That's what I mean by "gotcha journalism". It's obvious from these prior interviews that Palin has little to no comprehension of fiscal policy and economics. For heaven's sake, she received a "D" in macroeconomics in college! And, as I've said in the past, I have little understanding of economic issues myself.

No, what's important, Katie, is that she sound like she understands the issues. In the debate. If she is sufficiently prepared, she can give an illusion of understanding the issues--even if she is only giving answers with the prepared and practiced spontaneity and content necessary to give that illusion force.

Given that the bar is set at the lowest standard imaginable, Katie, if she accompanies that performance with sufficient charm, we believe that media will follow, into focusing on the change from that low standard, and on those superficial entertainment values--you know, Katie, (McCain smiles through tight lips and squinting eyes and moves his hands up and down)--"She certainly appears to be more confident tonight; she appears more poised, coherent, humorous"--rather than her readiness to be President from an objective standard. After all, using the more important standard of Presdidential capability, she has already demonstrated that she is unprepared to be President.

So, Katie, we want them to focus on that difference, on her debate preparation, rather than on her actual well-demonstrated Presidential unreadiness. And that's what I mean by "gotcha journalism."

KATIE: But if I understand you correctly, Sen. McCain, you actually believe that it's not important that she understand the issues actually facing the nation...

MCCAIN: Right.

COURIC: On which many people's very jobs, health and life will rely at this critical time...

MCCAIN: Yes.

COURIC: And that all that really matters is creating a standard so low that she actually is rewarded for her widely seen and repeatedly demonstrated lack of knowledge and understanding. That we would be using what is essentially a remedial standard for Presidential capability--rather than one of actual capability.

Sen. McCain, you seem to be actually suggesting that we should decide that she is ready for the Presidency, simply because, after preparation, she has improved. Even though just days earlier, time after time, she was unable to give coherent answers on these subjects.

No one can gain Presidential-level understanding in days. And in the office of the Presidency, with its intense crises and unforseeable events, she will not be prepared for each unpredictable day, as she was for the debate.

Yet you expect media to focus on these values, rather than actual readiness to be President. That's what you mean by "gotcha journalism"?

MCCAIN: Exactly. And they will. Once again, Katie, I would say to the media: Once again--we "gotcha" to lower the bar. We "gotcha" to set expectations far below those actually required for a President. We "gotcha" to focus on characteristics unrelated to Presidential capability, and to ignore her statements on these issues made only days earlier--as if a few days of debate preparation can erase a glaring and dangerous actual lack of knowledge and preparedness. Yes, indeed--we "gotcha" (smiles).

COURIC: How can you expect the media to fall for that?

MCCAIN: It worked for Bush.

I don't think the media scrutiny of Palin is at all unfair. SHe is virtually unknown by America, she has virtually none of the normal experience that one would expect in a VP (good education, national political experience, national exposure, international experience, or endurance)and she has been kept away from America to an extent never before seen in politics. The media is using what little information they have to try and build a picture of Palin for the American people. If they want the media to get a fairer picture of Palin then they have to give the media access.

It can't be a good idea to go to unprecidented lengths to try and deny the media access. Of course this is going to anger the media, they want a story and she won't give them one. McCain has traditionally been very popular with the media because, until recently, he gave the media more access to himself than almost any other politician. The media is also getting upset with McCain because of his own withdrawal from reporters.

Palin has much more to prove tonight not becasue she is getting undeserved scorn from the media but becasue the media has heard virtually nothing from her. I was certainly taken aback when McCain selected her. Considering McCain's age and health I would have expected a very experienced VP, someone ready to take over as President from the first day. But I was willing to give her the chance to try and explain to me why I should believe that she is ready to be President. She just hasn't taken the time to talk to the American people.

Bcamp55 you do know that it effectively takes 60 votes in the senate to get anything at all passed right? The Democrats have 51 votes, that is not enough to do anything if the Republicans want to block it. Its still all on the republicans until the dems get a 60 40 majority.

You know, I don't have high hopes for this debate. We seem to have reached a new low, in terms of what we expect from the people who govern us -- and given the low we reached when George W. Bush was first campaigning, that is really saying something.

But I'd just like to reflect, for a moment, on the fact that asking a candidate for the Vice Presidency of the United States what newspapers they read is now considered, by some Republicans, to be a "gotcha" question.

Please tell me we're not serious, here. Asking someone "what newspapers do you read" has never before, to my knowledge, been considered a particularly hard-hitting question. It's never meant to be a trick question, or a devious media device. It is, on the contrary, one of those things that's meant to be a complete, open-ended, time-wasting pander, like "what's your favorite color?" or "do you like pasta?" Only in a fevered dream world could "what do you read?" be considered a challenging question.

Now, I recognize that asking someone to name significant decisions of the Supreme Court might be, you know, a bit of a hard question. Whether it should be a hard question for someone seeking to take the number two spot behind the presidency, I don't know, but I'll grant that it actually requires thought. The same with asking whether or not you know where your own running mate stands, on an issue -- I'll grant that, by God, you actually have to have had some small conscious awareness of the world around you in order to come up with an answer to that one.

But "what do you read" is something that I file under the other category of Questions To Ask Candidates. I call that other category, for the sake of simplicity, Questions A Clam Could Answer. There are the hard questions, and then there are the Questions A Clam Could Answer. Vertebrate questions, and bivalve questions. Questions that require a spinal cord to answer, and questions that do not.

I have every confidence that any plumber, truck driver, school teacher, public accountant, acrobat, farmer, fast food worker, middle manager, chiropractor, spokesman for the bacon industry, movie critic, tree pruner, freelance ghost hunter or dirt poor biochemistry graduate student living temporarily in his van could answer the question, "what newspapers do you read." Maybe the answer would be "none." Maybe the answer would be something else. But it would not, in general, be considered a devious plot by a potential saboteur, something to be responded to with a stutter, mouth agape, fishing for an answer that will not seem to come. It is only when you aspire to one of the highest offices in the land that suddenly you are given the kindness of having it be presumed that you cannot and should not answer Questions A damned Clam Could Answer, and people will rise to your defense if you manage to foul the apparently unfoulable question.

All this leads, of course, to the obvious question: what possible questions could be asked of Sarah Palin that would not be assumed to be devious, or underhanded, or unnecessarily mean? I can presume that "what's your favorite book?" is right out, although any Oprah guest is expected to have the answer ready and at hand. I gather that "do you watch Survivor?" would probably be considered a media trap, and asking something like whether she ever watched the Discovery Channel would likely have the Republicans calling in the Secret Service to form a protective ring around her.

I don't know. Part of me is expecting this debate to be a train wreck, car crash and political typhoid outbreak all rolled into one; the other part of me suspects that as long as Palin is sufficiently belligerent, she doesn't actually have to know or even say much of anything at all. After all, absolute imbeciles have been applauded for their debate performances in the recent past (see Bush, George W.), and to good electoral effect, and Palin is clearly at least capable of rational thought -- though in the Couric interviews it seemed at least some of that rational thought was expressed primarily as muscle twitches. She may, in the debate, resort to the cannon blasts of Word Confetti that she displayed in the Couric interviews -- but honestly, how many people would notice? That is the trick of debates. You don't actually have to know anything -- you just have to be assertive and verbal enough that people watching think you do. Every high school debate team in the country knows as much.

It is not possible for Sarah Palin to render a debate performance sufficiently superior for the media to recognize her as victorious. The media have consistently invested themselves in favoritism toward the Obama campaign and no amount of expertise on the part of McCain or Palin will change this flagrantly obvious bias in reporting the news. Any literate person not already brainwashed by the Obama hysteria knows this and will take it into account, both before and after the debate.

Whether you and your pollyanna European neighbors want to admit it, the only reason Western Europe could breath free was because of the United States. Get off your high-horse. Without America, Europe would be toeing the Soviet Union policy line. Russia would be dictating foreign policy, trade and monetary terms, Gevena would nothing more than Kremlin's financial center. Where Russia would deposit and trade their worthless rubles for European currencies at the expense of the European people. If you're an example of European intellect, I dare say there are more intelligent people living in the hills of West Virginia than all or Europe. Now, go to your car and get rid of a ton of the stuff you're full of.

For those who still can’t grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.

White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because “every family has challenges,” even as black and Latino families with similar “challenges” are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.

White privilege is when you can call yourself a “f-n’ redneck,” like Bristol Palin’s boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll “kick their f-n' as$,” and talk about how you like to “shoot sh-t” for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.

White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don’t all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you’re “untested.”

White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you.

White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto is “Alaska first,” and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she’s being disrespectful.

White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do--like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor--and people think you’re being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college and the fact that she lives close to Russia--you’re somehow being mean, or even sexist.

White privilege is being able to convince white women who don’t even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because suddenly your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a “second look.”

White privilege is being able to give a 36 minute speech in which you talk about lipstick and make fun of your opponent, while laying out no substantive policy positions on any issue at all, and still manage to be considered a legitimate candidate, while a black person who gives an hour speech the week before, in which he lays out specific policy proposals on several issues, is still criticized for being too vague about what he would do if elected.

White privilege is being able to graduate near the bottom of your college class (McCain), or graduate with a C average from Yale (W.) and that's OK, and you're cut out to be president, but if you're black and you graduate near the top of your class from Harvard Law, you can't be trusted to make good decisions in office.

White privilege is being able to sing a song about bombing Iran and still be viewed as a sober and rational statesman, with the maturity to be president, while being black and suggesting that the U.S. should speak with other nations, even when we have disagreements with them, makes you "dangerously naive and immature."

And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because a lot of white voters aren’t sure about that whole “change” thing. Ya know, it’s just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain.

Christian Americans Against Adulterous Cheaters (CAAAC)

We have decided not to support McCain because he left his first wife Carol in her 40s for a rich young Cindy in her 20s. He cheated with Cindy for months before divorcing Carol. And marrying Cindy.

In my Bible, the one who cheats can't remarry or she/he's guilty of continuous adultery with her/his new spouse. A few mistakes is one thing, but we can't have a President in continuous adultery.

We can't endorse McCain/Palin. It seems Obama and Biden have clean family lives so we are swinging our support to them.

Palin will surprise everyone by giving reasonably good answers, because she will have a secret helper in her ear. Watch for the telltale "thoughtful pauses" before she answers questions. Also, if Biden is asked a question first, she will be writing down her answer (as it comes into her ear) so she will be ready.

Please, McCain made a major mistake in not having her on the trail one day and learning the ropes the next and falling on her face well before the debate. Obama became incredibly strong and had to do homework in his 21 debates with Hillary. It made him get rid of Wright and Farrakan baggage, as well as to hone his ability for POTUS. By hiding Pain and trying to now cram in 3 days what should have been a month, leaves her in my opinion, not ready for this debate. Biden just has to answer questions and attack McCain. While not ignoring her, he should ignore her points and stick to his vast positional experience in his answers. No one expects her to win the debate, but the question of ability to take over will be do or die for Governor Palin.

Biden says that if this country helped you make millions every year then it would be patriotic to help your country by paying a higher tax rate than under the Bush McCain plan, when your country needs your help.

For example:
J.P. Morgan paid off the entire US debt after WW I and he said he did it out of gratitude.

Palin will argue tonight that it is socialist to ask millionaires to pay a higher percentage of their income than people on social security.

I have noticed among the postings on this forum a great number of comments made by seemingly intelligent, well-educated individuals that offer nothing more than emotional rants couched in inane party dogma. Yet, being a psychologist, I know people too well to to be actualy shocked or even mildly surprised by this. Politics is about power, and, with respect to the individual in society, it is about dominance, security, self-image, and other psychological phenomena. For most people, personal politics like personal morality is not based on principles and ideals that overide and transcend natural selfishness and grandiosity. Politics in practice is much about self, less about us, and little about other. Sadly, objectivity, truth, reason, ideals, and spirituality are minor factors at best determinating most individual politics. This is why the framers of the Constitution denied the common citizen the vote in the election of President. Given the baseness in human nature, democracy, fairness, and justice always hangs by a thread.

Try living like you did for about 100,000 years for awhile. When you’re tired of walking, no electricity, no sanitation, no medical/dental, no communication, no transportation, no food to eat and get back to us on your knees. This time though when you're tired of running down and dogs and cats to eat stay away from the rats; remember the plague.

BTW - how is that 75% tax rate feeling about now? Is that why the standard of living is so low? The people here on welfare live 10X better than you people and they still complain.

Yeah you're not afraid of Russia, sure you're not. They need to expand their markets so someone will be forced to buy their crap products and there's nothing like a market controlled with a with an iron fist right in their back door.

Other than the high probability that she doesn't read much if at all she was probably afraid to name a publication because she didn't want to get pigeon-holed.

So since she only knew a couple of publications she chose not to mention them but instead B.S. her way through the question by saying she reads them all.

It's kind of a gotcha question, but not for someone who has convictions and a curiosity about the world.

She's a good small-town politician but she is no National figure.

Good luck Palin :) Biden :)

That is all I have to say for now. I want to see what actually happens first.

I am looking for level of comfort, as well as focused responses that actually serve informative to the public. I'll be tuned in for what I'm not getting out of the debate performance that I've gone in expecting.

I will honestly say that Palin has some high bars to research, thanks for McCain's selection of her as well as her recent interview performances altogether. She's got to step up, and I'm looking forward to it actually while skeptic going into viewing this debate.

Go Biden! And don't play "soft" due to gender either. I want to see Biden do Biden. I want him to go for what he knows, and tell it like it is.

I'd like to see Palin elaborate more on her talking points as an EXPERIENCED individual on the Republican ticket, and not just give us what has been simply memorized. Although I disagree with her and McCain's positions, I still expect her to intelligently enlighten me at the experienced level everyone talks about. She needs to show the public why she's qualified to even be one of the debators than we individuals are. She does. I want to see her taking and responding to questions, like McCain does. I HOPE, sincerely, that she won't let me down tonight even if I disagree with her positions. I still want to be enlightened.

We'll see what happens tonight.

Republicans are hoping desperately for a Palin/Ifill moment similar to the GHWBush/Dan Rather moment of years ago. Conservatives are addicted to spectacle, an actual debate about issues would put them into a coma. They keep flicking at the same scab over and over, hoping that the pain can keep out of their consciousness that Obama has already sealed the deal.

But here's one question for Palin: if you are such a draw to Hillary Clinton Democrats, why is your campaigning fleeing from Michigan?

Attaboy America, well done! You are international laughingstocks now. We are laughing our heads off at you clowns. Incompetence is the American way! We're Number One!

I haven't seen that, but maybe you want to take a look at the Sarah Palin Quotes Generator at http://palinquotes.sillycloud.com/

McCain really has suspended his campaign in Nevada too---He sends Romney in his place---Cheney is now coming to Reno as a substitute for Bush, for a hunting conference no less (hope they don't let him bring his shotgun--he has problems with his aim.)---And it appears McCain is also pulling the October VP Debate Surprise---He is suspending Sarah's campaign in Sedona, and has hired Tina Fey as her substitute to debate Biden ---- "I can see Russia from Arizona too!"----No wonder 12,000 showed up in Reno Tuesday to support Barack Obama!

Only in Dan Balz's left-wing dreams has Sarah Palin come to be identified chiefly with her Fay/Couric exposures. If a Martian were to spend his first 30 days on Earth perusing newspapers, television, movies and other pop media -- all of which are completely dominated by the Left -- he'd infer that McCain/Palin didn't have a ghost of a chance. In fact, this Presidential election is going to be as close as the last two. Red State voters may be invisible to newspapers and television, but -- trust me on this -- we do exist, and we will critical mass come November.

Sarah Palin may score some points for charm, but she just doesn't have the intellectual chops to be our President.

She obviously went to the Alaska Beauty Queen Charm School, where she learned by rote all of the cute tricks she could use to be charming. Unfortunately for her, her tricks are all to obvious. How many people can say, "Ummmmm" while appearing to have memorized that statement?

She can't even name newspapers or magazines she's read. As for Supreme Court decisions, don't even begin to go there. Disaster!

Who would even consider voting for such a phony? Her background is larded with cronyism and vindictiveness. Remember Nixon's enemy's list? How about W's approach to governing? Do you like that? If so, vote for the geezer and the fake charmer.

"What specific policies in an Obama administration will make your life better?"

Why thanks for asking. Here you go:

- Move us towards lowering our carbon footprint through cap and trade, fuel efficiency standards, etc. This makes a better future for my kids.

- Provide a college education tax credit.

- Barack Obama is 100% behind net neutrality - without that, small net reliant businesses would suffer.

- Obama intends to push broadband access - another highly beneficial thing to me personally as it relates to my job.

- Make the R&D tax credit permanent - also key for my industry.

Seriously, I'll just tl;dr this post. I don't like all of Obama's policies. For example, his health care plan sucks. Unfortunately, McCain's is worse (for me, personally). Such is fate.

We might have our differences but on our worst day - we can out produce, out spend, out fight, out invent, every single one of you backwards butt plugs that you call countries.

I like going there because I like seeing how my great grand parents lived (plus the women are pretty easy admittedly), you know: archaic medical/dental, sh*t for housing, streets so narrow that my d*ck wouldn't fit on, public sanitation worse than an outhouse - yeah you guys have it made (thinks to the US).

Why did Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac donate over FIVE TIMES more money to Barack Obama than to John McCain?

Liberals draw a blank.

Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac knew which side wanted to install regulations to end their illegal profiting... and which side wanted "more of the same" (see Democrats).

It's just amazing the amount of money Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac donated to Democrat politicians with Chris Dodd #1 and Barack Obama #2.

It's sad the way we all want her to prove her worth. The fact is that she was a decidedly poor choice as VP candidate. And we all dread the fact that she might really bomb on live TV. I can't even watch the debate because the potential cringe factor of watching her fail is just too much for me to handle.

But worse, McCain has shown that he can make poor decisions, and he isn't willing to reverse it, so that disqualifies him also.

Now we have the further embarrassment of watching as all the born agains get let down while still expecting a miracle.

Perhaps the only thing worse might have been Bush Palin. 2 people violating the separation of church and state, and believing that everything will just work itself out.

Enough incompetence already, time to get serial.

What specific policies in an Obama administration will make your life better?

Liberals draw a blank.

Posted by: mark777

---------------------

Gosh, Mark, how nice of you to answer for us. Oh, wait, I think I can name one or two!!!

1. Provide a Tax Cut for Working Families: Obama and Biden will restore fairness to the tax code and provide 150 million workers the tax relief they need. Obama and Biden will create a new "Making Work Pay" tax credit of up to $500 per person, or $1,000 per working family. The "Making Work Pay" tax credit will completely eliminate income taxes for 10 million Americans.

2. Eliminate Income Taxes for Seniors Making Less than $50,000: Barack Obama will eliminate all income taxation of seniors making less than $50,000 per year. This proposal will eliminate income taxes for 7 million seniors and provide these seniors with an average savings of $1,400 each year. Under the Obama-Biden plan, 27 million American seniors will also not need to file an income tax return.

3. Simplify Tax Filings for Middle Class Americans: Obama and Biden will dramatically simplify tax filings so that millions of Americans will be able to do their taxes in less than five minutes. Obama and Biden will ensure that the IRS uses the information it already gets from banks and employers to give taxpayers the option of pre-filled tax forms to verify, sign and return. Experts estimate that the Obama-Biden proposal will save Americans up to 200 million total hours of work and aggravation and up to $2 billion in tax preparer fees.

4. Fight for Fair Trade: Obama and Biden will fight for a trade policy that opens up foreign markets to support good American jobs. They will use trade agreements to spread good labor and environmental standards around the world and stand firm against agreements like the Central American Free Trade Agreement that fail to live up to those important benchmarks. Obama and Biden will also pressure the World Trade Organization to enforce trade agreements and stop countries from continuing unfair government subsidies to foreign exporters and nontariff barriers on U.S. exports.

5. Amend the North American Free Trade Agreement: Obama and Biden believe that NAFTA and its potential were oversold to the American people. They will work with the leaders of Canada and Mexico to fix NAFTA so that it works for American workers.

6. Improve Transition Assistance: To help all workers adapt to a rapidly changing economy, Obama and Biden will update the existing system of Trade Adjustment Assistance by extending it to service industries, creating flexible education accounts to help workers retrain, and providing retraining assistance for workers in sectors of the economy vulnerable to dislocation before they lose their jobs.

7. End Tax Breaks for Companies that Send Jobs Overseas: Barack Obama and Joe Biden believe that companies should not get billions of dollars in tax deductions for moving their operations overseas. Obama and Biden will also fight to ensure that public contracts are awarded to companies that are committed to American workers.

8. Reward Companies that Support American Workers: Barack Obama introduced the Patriot Employer Act of 2007 with Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) to reward companies that create good jobs with good benefits for American workers. The legislation would provide a tax credit to companies that maintain or increase the number of full-time workers in America relative to those outside the US; maintain their corporate headquarters in America if it has ever been in America; pay decent wages; prepare workers for retirement; provide health insurance; and support employees who serve in the military.

9. Invest in the Manufacturing Sector and Create 5 Million New Green Jobs
Invest in our Next Generation Innovators and Job Creators: Obama and Biden will create an Advanced Manufacturing Fund to identify and invest in the most compelling advanced manufacturing strategies. The Fund will have a peer-review selection and award process based on the Michigan 21st Century Jobs Fund, a state-level initiative that has awarded over $125 million to Michigan businesses with the most innovative proposals to create new products and new jobs in the state.
Double Funding for the Manufacturing Extension Partnership: The Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) works with manufacturers across the country to improve efficiency, implement new technology and strengthen company growth. This highly-successful program has engaged in more than 350,000 projects across the country and in 2006 alone, helped create and protect over 50,000 jobs. But despite this success, funding for MEP has been slashed by the Bush administration. Barack Obama and Joe Biden will double funding for the MEP so its training centers can continue to bolster the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers.

10. Invest In A Clean Energy Economy And Create 5 Million New Green Jobs: Obama and Biden will invest $150 billion over 10 years to advance the next generation of biofuels and fuel infrastructure, accelerate the commercialization of plug-in hybrids, promote development of commercial scale renewable energy, invest in low emissions coal plants, and begin transition to a new digital electricity grid. The plan will also invest in America's highly-skilled manufacturing workforce and manufacturing centers to ensure that American workers have the skills and tools they need to pioneer the first wave of green technologies that will be in high demand throughout the world.

Should I keep going? There is plenty more.

This is just a blatant lie, and you know it. Sen. Obama was a summer associate at Sidley Austin - a firm which, any attorney will tell you, is the definition of big. Like most summer associates, Sen. Obama was given an offer for full time employment at the end of his summer. He turned it down, opting instead to join a boutique civil rights firm. So first, you're a liar.

Second, you put waaaaayyyy too much stock in the draw of big law firms. I know. I work at one. Plenty of my law school friends, hyper-educated and competant individuals, decided after school to reject their offers at big firms paying top dollar, opting for lower-paying jobs that they find more fulfilling. Me, I like firm life. But some people aren't swayed by the work or the money. For those people, I have undying respect.

And so should you. Please stop forcing me to turn off my billing clock to respond to your nonsense.

Well...the good part in a McCain win(if there is such a thing) Palin will make a great VP because she will have absolutely no input. The bad part in a McCain win (other than everything) Palin will have better than decent odds of being US President. It's also spooky a good performance in tonights debate may give her the inside track among 2012 Republican hopefuls.

If Obama wins, his team better start planning for Palin from the get go. Kiss-McCain's-Ass Bill Clinton is right about Palin being "real", but he was meaning it in Bill Clinton definition: A real snake oil salesman like him, McCain and Bush.

I agree with those who have said that the debate will not matter. Palin has already irrevocably damaged her image. She cannot take back all the gibberish she spouted. It is all now on the record. there remains another important issue. I don't believe that Palin's religious beliefs are relevant other than to women who seek choice or all those who abhor creationism as religion not science. However, the one exception is her possible belief in "The Rapture" common to many Pentacostals like her. Rapturists pray for Armageddon to cleanse the world and bring their instant ascent to heaven (kind of like the extreme jihadists). We cannot afford a Rapturist in the White House. This question should be addressed, if not in the debate then soon in another venue.

frankv,

We'll bypass your hateful spewing of everyone you don't like or agree with and go to your last point. No one argues the US military installations in Alaska are not important to our national defense, the argument is Palin's involvement in that. She has virtually none as governor beyond what a governor of any international border state has, which is not much. She doesn't scramble the interceptors, she doesn't call out the Coast Guard or Navy to track Russian vessels, in fact, her office doesn't even have any say or control of the National Guard when they are called up for duty by the Pentagon. All this is under national control, yet she would like people to believe otherwise as a ruse to suggest she has experience being Commander in Chief. Heck, her office only received one request in her 20 months in office from the National Guard which required their interaction and an aide sign off on it because she wasn't available. That was to send a C-17 to Louisiana prior to Hurricane Kyle to be used by FEMA.

-----------------------------

Come on, man. You're offering up a red herring here. The point is not that Gov. Palin doesn't have the ability to recall facts. It's that, even in response to the most simple questions, geared specifically TOWARDS her values, she is unable to demonstrate that she's put much thought into how her world view would play out in executing policy. And, I'm sorry, but this isn't the PTA. A general understanding of right and wrong does not get you to the safe end of a complex international or domestic problem. We've seen that in the Bush administration.

I've heard too many Republicans argue for the last eight years that intelligence and mental prowess doen't matter - that it is someone's values, dictating their approach to the issues, that is important. As if those are different! Sens. Obama and Biden value thoughtful deliberation that takes into account the full range of beliefs and opinions. Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin shoot first and aim later, claiming that their gut instinct and "strong values" informs their decisions.

This is just too important. I'm sure Gov. Palin is a great person with unflintching values. But we need to demand more of our leaders than just an adherance to principle. Belief has to be backed up by substance if we are going to get this country back on track. Yet so many in your camp have been out on the trail all week talking about how Gov. Palin shouldn't be subjected to an IQ test. Why not?! If we've got 200 million people in this country, can't we pick TWO that have BOTH values and intelligence? Actaully....we did.

In fact, Sarah Palin cannot overcome the real stakes in this debate. A VP's most important quality is readiness to step into the presidency at a moment's notice -- not aggressiveness or homespun charm or the ability to parrot back talking points. Sarah Palin's resume indicates that she has none of the actual experience or knowledge about national affairs that one would ask of a vice presidential candidate 150 years ago, let alone today -- and no amount of debating will change that before the election. Sarah Palin is unqualified to be vice president.

Please note the all time highs in virtually every indicator prior to those imbeciles assuming power.

Exactly how stupid do you have to be to dismantle what can arguably called the strongest economy in history?

We won’t even talk about the rise in unemployment, the rise in interest rates, and the number of foreclosures.

Hey you think if instead of stuffing their pockets full with $366,000 (Obama $126,000 , Dodd $165,000, and Hillary $75,000)in “campaign contributions” from Freddie Mac and fannie Mae maybe they should have voted FOR S. 190 instead of against it. But then they wouldn’t have gotten the $366,000 would they.

There has never been a more biased, racist, lying, despicable, coverage of this election in my lifetime.MSNBC,CNN, just about every newspaper, most of the blogs, and 95% of black people are in the tank for the phony, socialist, actor, scripted, Hussein Obama. It is disgusting. I will never watch, read or believe any of the above for the rest of my life. I believe Fox is the only one that is fair. These despicable left wing liberals have lied about and are trying to destroy Palin with a vengeance.Yet, they give that empty suit Hussein Obama, and that idiot Biden a free pass. The truth of the matter is, that the media, blacks, nazi feminists,Hollywood trash,Move-On,and the rest of the marxist, socialist left wing , want a black man to be President and then they can claim they helped elect him. This make truthful journalism "dead".Just a thought to think about.P-Diddy made a comment a few weeks ago, saying" when Obama wins, we blacks are going to take over the country".
Note: I was stationed in Alaska, USN, out in the Aleutian Islands. It was the last island in the chain, very small.I worked for the Naval Security Group, part of the CIA. I had a secret clearance. My job was to intercept Russian communications from ship, subs, naval bases, etc. via,Morse code. I knew some Russian and was an expert in taking their code and knew their alphabet as well as our own.It was a very important part of our foreign policy, and many of the messages intercepted led to many foreign policy decisions.Oh,by the way, I have seen Russia from that base many, many times. So Sarah Palin is telling the truth when she says Alaska is an important part of our foreign policy. It is you left wing Obama robots who are ignorant and misinformed by the biased media.Let no one be fooled, this election is all about race, the black race.
McCain/Palin the true honest candidates!!!!!

Just so you know that Mrs. Palin is indeed on the bottom of the ticket and WILL NOT bring much in reform like John McCain and she claims, the following was pulled from a CNN Money article titled, "Palin to play ball with Big Oil", explaining how she will tow the party line IF this woeful ticket is elected:

The Alaska governor may have raised taxes on the oil industry and scrapped a questionable pipeline deal, but in Washington she'll toe the party line.

"The McCain campaign, which speaks for Palin, confirmed that stance.

"The governor supports the campaign's positions," said Doug Holtz-Eakin, a McCain senior advisor."

Reform? Change? Not from the GOP ticket ladies and gentlemen. The state rest!

For most GOP voters, Palin (or any other GOP leader) can't not make any mistake. So Palin's performance will always be stellar to these voters. And if anyone, including media, not agree with their assessment of Palin, then the individuals (or the media) are "far left" or "too liberal". These days being "liberal" has become a curse word coined by the closed minded conversatives. Bush has made it fasionable to be "dumb" and "anti-intellectual" and the GOP is ready to take it to the next level with Palin. So whatever Palin says or does in today's bedate doesn't matter. For the GOP voters she is the best - there is not a single criteria that can disqualify her (except to change to Democratic party?)

It would be great to have more and more fundamentalist take the office. It would be wonderful to have something like this:

1. compulsory Christianity teaching in the schools - all other religions banned.
2. No science in the school - just bible study since everything is there in the bible.
3. Those who use family planning as put in prison
4. Girls are married at early age and start reproducing as soon as they hit puberty.
5. Women are forced to stay at home to take care of home. Their job is to please their husband.
6. Everyone must attend Sunday church, otherwise put in jail.
7. Only one TV channel - FOX news
8. Only music allowed is Gospel music

Sounds like Taliban regime with Christianity flavor. Unfortunately that is where this is leading.

"Obama is a useless lawyer who attended an Ivy League school but never got a real job!
If he is as good as he thinks, why nobody hired him to practice the law?"
-------------------

Yet another hateful poster who's ignorant of the facts.

Here's the truth:
Obama graduated Harvard Law, magna cum laude (look it up if you don't know what that means), and had been elected by his peers the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review in its 104-year history. That IS a big deal, given the prestige and competitiveness of the Harvard Law Review. Again, research it if you don't know the implications.

Truth: Upon graduation, Obama had 597 job offers (it might have been 697 job offers, I'm not positive), including mega-bucks Wall Street jobs and a clerkship with the US Supreme Court.

Don't believe me? Watch Diane Sawyer's presidential profiles on 20/20 this Friday night, 10/3, if you don't want to research it otherwise.

Obama chose to go with a small but prestigious law firm in Chicago that specialized in civil rights cases. He also taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School, and, yes, they considered him a "professor." Obama was offered the option but declined to become a tenured professor because he was not interested in full-time teaching.

So--who never got a job offer to practice law??

If you're going to post, add something useful--and FACTUAL--to the conversation.

No more lies. Our country is going down the tubes because of lies and greed and stupidity. ENOUGH!

Before the Bush's latest stinky shoe dropped alerting everyone to what many already knew: The s**t was about to hit the economic fan -AND back when she could read blissfully from her allegedly faulty teleprompter and the nation was in happy happy la la land, Palin's Valley Girl appeal actually had traction.

Now, we are in more serious times.

Palin just does not matter anymore. Couric pulled back the curtian, and the whole nation, both liberals and conservatives, saw the truth about Palin's qualifications.

There is more entertainment value than political value in this debate. No matter who does good or bad in the debate, the McCain/Palin ticket is toast.

People often wonder why both McCain and Biden continually get away with verbal gaffes, and make no mistake, both of them have said some real doozies over the years.

I believe the reason for this is because they've been around for so long that they've in a sense, earned the right to a level of forgiveness.

Neither Obama or Sarah Palin have earned that right, so if they screw up, the world hears about it and judges them accordingly.

Karl Marx wasn't a community organizer by any stretch of the imagination and FDR was in the New York State Senate for several years prior to serving as Secretary of the Navy for seven years, then governor of New York for four years BEFORE becoming president.

It is rather pathetic this drawing a parallel between Palin and people like FDR or Truman or even Obama for that matter. The difference is the people she is compared to THOUGHT about issues or have been involved with issues far beyond seeing Russia from Alaska. A more parochial politician on the national level I cannot ever recall.

What newspapers, magazines and books does she read? How does she keep up with current events? Probably FOX News. Or maybe the AIP news letter.

Look for lots of one or two line answers tonight. Or everything being connected to her VAST expertises on energy issues. Yet another pathetic joke. I'm willing to bet I know more about energy issues than she does.

An individuals ability to recall data does represent their ability to address and respond to critical issues. A reporter's questions directed towards one's ability to recall events, dates, statements, case law, etc., does not define an individuals critical thinking abilities. I am astounded at the number of individuals who measure the ability of Obama/Biden by their "pr" strategy as opposed to their values. Obama/Biden, as per their "pr strategy", change the place they stand depending on what the polls show. Obama is an extremely left liberal who in his short term as Senator "shouted" the agenda of a dedicated socialist. If you doubt it, check the facts. 1) Since McCain is 5-8 points down she needs to score big
2) To redeem herself she needs show superior knowledge in foreign policy, economics, constitutional history, and national politics overall
3) As a woman she can't look weak so that respect for her rises
4) She needs to attack Biden and make him gaf away

I think she's got a great chance of pulling off all 4 things... NOT

Actually, if she can:

1) Find the right podium
2) Give mostly coherent answers to questions
3) Say she doesn't know when she doesn't
4) Not write the script for Saturday Night lives next open

Falin will be a success in the eyes of Conservatives.

Fox News will do the rest.

I was for Hillary until Sarah came along. She changed my mind about a lot of things. I used to be an advocate for rape victims. Now I see them for what they are: women who are trying to destroy the men in their lives and then make the taxpayer foot the bill to investigate their shrill claims of "rape".
I was a feminist, but now I understand that God does not want me to make the same money as a man, in accordance with his Word that man owns, and therefore controls, his woman.
I was protective of my reproductive rights, but now I realize that it's up to the men in the world to tell me what I can and can't do.

That leave one of the 5 McCain supporters in clear denial of the sole criteria for a VP candidate--that they be qualified to be president!

Palin is George W. in drag. She is going nowhere and neither is Grandpa Grumpy. They are wrong on damn near every issue that is important to America. Want a fixed economy, energy independence, our kids home from Iraq, affordable college and preschool education if yes to most of these then Barack Obama is your candidate. You are correct though, it IS a sad day in America when so many people spew their ideological dogma which is based on hate. The Bush/Cheney/Rove legacy, hate based initiatives.

My God, what happened when you first say Obama? It must have blown up...

Biden?? Did your "I make stuff up" meter go off the charts?

Take a look at a guy who worked for ACORN, befriends Tony Rezko, William Ayers and sits for 20 years listening to Wright and call him NOT PHONY...

Biden.. aguy who says no coal EVER ( when Obama says yes to clean coal ), talk about being shot at in Iraq and "forced down" in Afghanistan.

But Biden and Obama do have something else in common.. I guess they both feel they can make someone in a wheelchair get up and walk

Palin IS a GOP leader.
Look at her record of nepotism, rewards to her friends, revenge against her enemies, cheating on her expense account, (alleged) sexual affair, family out of control, lies, repeated lies, repeating lies even after they've been revealed, ignorance of the world, PROUD ignorance of the world, lack of curiosity, indifference to animals, and on and on....

Neither Palin's nor Biden's performance matters one bit to me. Both parties have lost my vote.

Due to the financial catastrophe that both parties are responsible for -- and both parties wish to exacerbate -- I'll be voting for Bob Barr in November.

Those of you who think that a debt problem can be fixed by adding more debt to it will sadly get what you asked for.

The real issues at stake for Sarah Palin is her inability to demonstrate that she is bright enough to lead. Sure, she is attractive and seems to be a nice woman. But unfortunately, it has become evident that she is not very bright nor capable to deal with world class leadership - not only what our country desperately needs, but more so, what the human race desperately needs from the United States of America.

But this is America. We accept "feel good" instead of "make good" for our standards and image means more than substance. We've allowed the worst example of a President to pass two terms without much of a blink. Maybe it proves how utterly befuddled we've become when it comes to accepting that we now are in the 21st century...

Gov. Palin will do better-than-expected tonight, if only because expectations are now so incredibly low. I do not know why she had so much trouble with interviews lately--whether it was intentional to lower expectations or she is just in over her head. But the fact is that she did very well in the Alaska gubernatorial debates in 2006. She can debate.

The problem for Sen. Biden is that there is almost no way for him to "win." He can lose by appearing condescending or with one of his famous gaffes. If the campaign is smart they are coaching hime to give a very muted performance and let Palin hang herself.

The Brits paper, the Manchester Guardian thinks this election is between the under 100 IQ people and the over 100 IQ people.

They ran an article suggesting that all of the Kerry states have an IQ over 100 by average, and all of the Bush states are under 100 IQ.

The nature of the name calling from the right wing on this website, vs the considerations based on concepts from the left wing, seems to bear out the Brits point of view on our electorate.

In that case, Palin has only to bring in some white fundamentalists and hunters tonight, who were previously not going to bother to vote. She doesnt have to make any sense at all.

No matter how much coaching can be done in a few short days, no matter how well the script has been memorized or the tongue sharpened for a 90-minute debate, the fact remains that Sarah Palin is painfully underqualified and unprepared to be Vice President of the United States or the President of the United States. A pretty face and a sassy mouth do not a responsible vice presidential candidate make.

And it is clear that Sarah Palin is not only part of that good old boy club but is also painfully inarticulate, scantily educated, and brashly manipulative, using her female wiles to charm and distract from what has become obvious in her candid TV interviews: She doesn't know anything about the United States or the world. Her "down to earth" persona comes across more like someone who is ignorant, disrespectful, and who is trying too hard to cover up what she lacks and hopes that no one else can see.

Let's talk about Obama's lack of experience. The man is an empty suit and all you liberals are worried about Sarah becoming President? Please! What has Obama ever DONE to own your confidence? The man is downright scary. Sarah, on the other hand, has shown much potential in her short political career and will handle the Vice Presidency well. And if that reality frightens you, then be very, very afraid for your misguided and hateful socialist agenda... she WILL ultimately become this nation's first female President. AND I CAN'T WAIT!!!

This is rope a dope time if the Dems don't play this really well. Palin has to do little more than turn up to improve on where she is now. I anticipate she will be pure attack dog as a diversionary measure. It will not matter what question Ifil asks there will be a canned attack response. Biden must not get drawn into defense only. He has to attack McCain and expose Palin's inexperience. Ifil has to keep both of them answering the question she asked. She has a tough, tough job.

pro36, for the last time, Obama is NOT a Muslim. (And some of us don't think it would be the end of the world if a progressive Muslim WERE elected.) Do you really believe that all of us radical left wing, gay loving, feminazi liberals are interested in having an Islamic extremist president? Historically, Islamic extremists have: repressed women, executed gays, forced a state religion upon the populace, censored the press, books, and other media, and sought to regress their societies by a few hundred years. Communist governments have: forced atheism upon the populace, censored the press, books, and other media, and sought to destroy individual liberties. These are not exactly liberal agendas. Your beliefs are nonsensical.

Caribou Barbie either hits a grand slam tonight and follows that up by doing some open press conferences with the media or the McPalin campaign will be finished (thank god) for good.

The McCain campaign has been forced to stash away Palin in Cheney's undisclosed location, and even needs McCain to chaperone her during media interviews.

This has forced McCain to shoulder a greater load of the campaign, deprived of a top-level surrogate. This was glaringly obvious during the first presidential debate, when Biden was all over the networks spreading the good Democratic cheer, while they stashed Palin in a Philly bar. And even there, she was unable to stay out of trouble, answering a shouted question by some random dude with an endorsement of Obama's plan to take out Osama Bin Laden even if found hiding in Pakistan.

Here's an easy question for Palin:

What does the Vice-President do?

http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/10/john_mccain_life_isnt_fair.html

Question 1: So why does Sarah Palin sound so clueless on the issues Mr. McCain?
McCain: Because life isn't fair.

Question 2: So why didn't your completely transparent ploy to "suspend" your campaign to "work" on the bailout giv eyou a bounce in the polls like you were expecting?
McCain: Because life isn't fair.

Question 3: If you become President and are not able to balance the budget by the end of your first term as you promised, why will that be?
McCain: Because life isn't fair.

Question 4: Why do you think some of your hare-brained schemes the last couple months have not helped your poll numbers?
McCain: Because life isn't fair.

Palin's future in the Republican Party rests only on these credentials: her belief in creationism; opposition to a woman's right to choose; and her adherence to a particular brand of Christianity. Rigidly far right Republicans still love her. And they always will, because they use the above- mentioned beliefs as their only standards by which to juge a candidate. Call me frivolous, but as a Christian, myself, I don't see our earth and its health as a gift to plunder. I always saw it as a divinely given responsiblity: how will we defend our caretaking of God's good earth? And I have a few other criteria to judge a candidate by: economy, Iraq/Afghanistan, health care, education, our moral standing in the world....call me a values voter who cares about true values, not false "wedge" issues that are designed to divide and create hate and dissent amongst gullible voters.

The impact on Sarah Palin's own career is a good point, Dan. Dan Quayle did not harm his running mate, who was elected president. But Quayle's own career was over after the vice presidency because of that campaign.

I keep thinking about an alternate universe where the Republican Party had an eye to the future and simply had Sarah Palin give the keynote address. What a triumph that would have been! See, it would have said, we Republicans have a surprisingly deep bench, too, just like Obama giving the DNC keynote in 2004! And then this dashing new favorite of the party would have whisked back to Alaska and even higher popularity there, without a bit of scrutiny from the national press.

Back to Quayle, though, I don't think the debate with Bentsen alone did him in. Much as we've seen with Palin recently, there were multiple "awkward moments" that cemented the bad impression made when he was so poorly introduced at the convention. Even his perfectly fine VP debate performance against Al Gore and Admiral Stockdale four years later didn't do much to revive his fortunes.

pdgnz, your quote helps me realize that I think I as much concerned about how inarticulate and rambling Palin is as I am by what she doesn't appear to know or understand.

I think most of us could have come up with a more coherent answer, even if we had the same level of knowledge.

For example below she is not going to solely blame all of man's activities on changes in climate. I thought that went the other way?

"Palin: "You know there are – there are man’s activities that can be contributed [sic] to the issues that we’re dealing with now, with these impacts. I’m not going to solely blame all of man’s activities on changes in climate. Because the world’s weather patterns are cyclical. And over history we have seen changes there. But it kinda doesn’t matter at this point, as we debate what caused it. The point is: it’s real; we need to do something about it."

At this point, if you believe the polls and the biased media, the McCain-Palin ticket theoretically has nothing to lose. In the words of the great Civil War General & President US Grant, “We have taken our last backward step!”"

-------

When asked comment on President Grant's accomplishements, Sarah Palin remarked, "wasn't that the guy who hung with President Foster and made the first pair of sunglasses? You know, Foster-Grant sunglasses. Well, you know sunglasses are part of eye care and part of the larger picture, healthcare in general. Okay, what's with this liberal media? Enough already!"

Um, when answering Katie Couric re global warming, Gov. Palin said that it's wrong to blame all of human activity on climate change. She supposedly meant it the other way, but if she continues w/ these kinds of screw-ups in the debate, the conclusion that she's inept mentally will be inexorable. It comes with trying to cram too much into one's head the night before the final.

It will be counted as a debate "win" for Palin if she doesn't drool out of the side of her mouth.

Why?

Because everyone acknowledges, one way or another, that she is not qualified to be vice president, let alone president.

So any meager display of knowledge on her part will be widely hailed.

No one is going to be looking at her qualifications vs. Joe Biden's qualifications. She obviously isn't in his league. But somehow, that doesn't count.

How did we get into such a ridiculous situation?
