Webb Tells Virginians: 'Trust Barack Obama'

Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) gets in high fives and handshakes from the crowd as he makes his entrance to an Obama rally in Roanoke, Va. (Linda Davidson / The Washington Post)

By Shailagh Murray
ROANOKE -- Democratic Sen. Jim Webb, a favorite son of western Virginia, offered a rousing introduction to Sen. Barack Obama and a few choice words about Sarah Palin at an event here today.

On Obama, he sought to dispel some myths. "I know what it's like to be involved in a Karl Rove campaign, and it's not fun, folks," said Webb, referring to his bruising battle in 2006 against GOP incumbent George Allen. "And the last several months we have seen that same type of campaign conducted against Barack Obama. What they do is they say, 'That person's not like you. That person doesn't understand you. You can't trust 'em.'"

"Let me tell you," Webb continued. "First of all, Barack Obama is like you. He knows what it's like to struggle."

He offered a few biographical facts, to clear up possible misconceptions. "There's a lot of comments that have been made about certain ethnic issues in this campaign," Webb said. "I would like to say we know Barack Obama's father was born in Kenya. Barack Obama's mother was born in Kansas by way of Kentucky. We are going to see on Election Day the election of the 14th president of the United States whose ancestry, whose family line goes back to the mountains of this area."

"I grew up moving all over the place," Webb told the crowd. "I was a boxer for eight years. I served in the Marine Corps in Vietnam. I'm a very skeptical person. When I say I trust somebody, I mean it. I trust Barack Obama and you should trust Barack Obama."

Moving on to Obama's rival, Sen. John McCain, Webb called the Arizona Republican " a friend," but questioned his leadership skills, citing the GOP nominee's pick as a running mate.

"Do you really think that Sarah Palin is the most qualified person?" Webb asked, to resounding boos. "How many people here like country music? I like country music. There was a song about two years ago, it was called, 'I know what I was doing, but what was I thinking?'"

I was simply refuting the spurious claim that no "plumber" makes over $250,000 per year. There's no way that's true, as there are big family-owned plumbing outfits all over the country. Roto-Rooter was just the largest company I could think of. Sorry, I don't have access to the IRS to prove it on-line for you otherwise.

Who is Jim Webb kidding. He went from a respected former Marine Officer to a Joke in the Marine Corps community. Talk about Sarah Palin being unqualified? What about Barack Obama. Hid pure hatred for George Bush is no reason to elect someone to the highest office in the land that has less experience than Palin and WHO WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. TALK about pandering. Please READ this article and get to know the Real John McCain. This is sad! You can tell a lot about a man’s character by the way he treats his love ones…...Imagine your dad doing this to your mother.

This is a quote, but read the article from the link below...
"Ted Sampley, who fought with US Special Forces in Vietnam and is now a leading campaigner for veterans’ rights, said: ‘I have been following John McCain’s career for nearly 20 years. I know him personally. There is something wrong with this guy and let me tell you what it is – deceit.
‘When he came home and saw that Carol was not the beauty he left behind, he started running around on her almost right away. Everybody around him knew it.
‘Eventually he met Cindy and she was young and beautiful and very wealthy. At that point McCain just dumped Carol for something he thought was better.
‘This is a guy who makes such a big deal about his character. He has no character. He is a fake. If there was any character in that first marriage, it all belonged to Carol."

McCain and Palin are trying to sell you on their candidacy in the same way sub-prime mortgage companies duped their victims. The difference is that this time, it’s the whole country that will be in danger of foreclosure.

Don’t make the mistake that Obama has this election won. The people must vote on November 4th. No complacency, my fellow Americans. We can’t afford it. The only way we give ourselves a chance to claw our way back to greatness is to make sure you get up, get out and vote. If you registered recently, just take some time to verify that you are still registered. We can start down the road to healing the wounds of the last eight years. It starts with sweeping clean the debris of failed ideals and poisoned policies, and you, my friends, are the broom. Let's start sweeping.

The fact is Obama's tax plan is just a return to the PROVEN system
Bill Clinton used during the prosperity of his term in office.
Bill Clinton left office with huge budget surpluses.

McCain's tax plan is just an extension of the PROVEN failure of the Bush tax system of rewarding the wealthy and corporations at the expense of the middle class. The middle class is now paying for his mess.

People like to argue theory and statistics but it's as simple as this: Are you better off now then you were eight years ago?

Posted by: Wiel | October 17, 2008 7:39 PM

What you mean is he is black and he comes from a city that has many blacks and they have much power. He is not part of that power structure and in fact has run against the machine.

He surrounds himself with quality people like Sen Lugar and Gen J. Jones, Warren Buffet and Paul Volcker. In fact you know much more about Barack Obama than John McCain because he surrounds himself with Washington lobbyists and insiders whose motives you do not know.

Even tough he is black or maybe because he is black and knows that white people will be wary of him because is seems to be different that he has led a open, non secretive life. He has been involved in his community trying to improve education and giving the rights to people who can not defend themselves he is a man that you really can know.

In the debate the other night Mr Obama was open about his relationship with Ayers. He also had only a brief relationship with ACORN. ACORN has been investigated several times and never has been found to be the cause of voter fraud. The only thing that ACORN has been guilty of is carelessness and when they have been careless their directors point out to election authorities the carelessness of the employees. Obama had nothing to do with ACORN election activities and ACorn is only guilty of registering more Democrats than Republicans.

The problem with the Republicans is so bad that the federal prosecutor in New Mexico was fired by Alberto Gonzalez because he would not prosecute ACORN and two years later there still is no prosecution of ACORN because there is no case.

Wiel wants you to vote against your own interest because he knows that McCain is wrong for most voters. So if he can slander Obama by implying there is something unknown about Obama but never really saying what is wrong with him.

For the folks who insist "we don't really know who Barack Obama is" ... what planet have you been living on? The man has written two books about himself and his background, speaks more coherently about his ideas than any politician in recent memory, and has been in the news nonstop for the past two years. If you feel you don't know enough about him, then it can only be because you don't want to know anything about him. You prefer to believe and spread whatever absurd lies might "explain" your irrational dislike of him. Come on, folks. Even Osama bin Laden in his dark little cave reads a newspaper.

read this and decide if you can still trust senator obama with our economy..

joe the plumber helped obama define his socialist economic policy .. but obama has much more going on than 'spreading the wealth around' just in america. last summer senator obama introduced the 'the global poverty act' to congress, which has been passed in the house and currently awaits approval in the senate. the global poverty act is a tax of 0.7% of the american gdp (gross domestic product), to be given to the united nations and distributed to third world countries in an attempt to eradicate 50% of the world's poverty. virtually no one knows about this, and yet it will cost americans 845 billion dollars over the next 13 years. what kind of insane agenda for our economy is obama working on? (let it be noted this has nothing to do with the recent 700+ billion dollar subprime bailout .. these are two totally separate activities.)

topics in this easy read include joe the plumber, the debate, socialism and finally the the global poverty act, which the heritage foundation calls "superfluous, misguided, and dangerous". check it out here:

Apparently, despite a 20-month long presidential campaign by Sen. Obama, we know very little of him. What we know is that he has limited experience in political arena in comparison to other candidates. Sen. Obama has been in the US Senate for three years including 2 years spent on his campaign. Sen. Biden has been in the US Senate for 36 years and Sen. McCain for 25 years. Sen. Obama has no military, executive, or leadership experience as opposed to Sen. McCain’s extensive military experience including 5 and a half years as a POW during the Vietnam Conflict. This experience tested his character beyond extraordinary. No such test could be pointed out in Sen. Obama’s life. Many aspects of his life are unknown, including his university years, beginning of his career in Chicago, and his affiliations with people and organizations during his political career in Chicago and Illinois. Sen. McCain has distinguished himself as a maverick Senator, often going against his party leadership joining forces with reformers across the aisle in the US Senate. Sen. Obama has neither gone against his party leadership nor reached across the aisle. Sen. McCain has been active participant in the national security policies, Sen. Obama has not. Apparently, he has chosen Sen. Biden as his running mate because of his foreign policy credentials that Sen. Obama could fall back on. Sen. Biden’s foreign policy blunders are well known, so Sen. Obama’s judgment has to be questioned in this regard.

The one thing that people do not have to worry about is that business will do what is best for them. If they need more employees they will hire them and if competition makes them cut employees they will do it.

The business owners want the tax break to go to him so that he can be sure to profit from the fiscal stimulant. If the we start to build roads there will be a similar stimulation but it will not go directly to a man like thecannula.

What this man won't tell you is that a business owner will have a hard time expanding his business because of his reduced access to credit. A direct investment in infrastructure will not involve credit access and will be able to create a stimulant more effectively at this time.

thecannula argument is vote for McCain because it is best for him. Ignore this man. He is a petty person who comes up with facts that I doubt can be substantiated. More importantly he relies on a politically based economic theory that has not been proven to be any better than a direct investment by the government in the economy.

The idea that a recession rather than a depression will be determined by fiscal policy rather than the rescue of the credit system is laughable.

So a heavily conservative, but bipartisan committee finds in an investigation that she herself called for, that Sarah Palin abused authority and broke ethics rules. It specified this in writing.

This board has attracted some serious fools. For you:

Are you ok with these ethics violations? If Sarah Palin were to become president (heaven forbid on so many levels) you would be fine with her acting in the exact same manner as president?

Sounds like the DOJ all over again. Sounds like Bush. I suppose if you were ok with all this to begin with, then you probably voted for Bush twice and have basically failed at life.

ARE ROGUE ELEMENTS FROM WITHIN A DANGER TO OBAMA AND BIDEN AND DEMOCRACY ITSELF?

The GOP has used official and unofficial invective to declare an open season on Sen. Obama. The threats issued by the rally crowds are now being denied in some quarters, such as The Drudge Report.

Congressional leaders should speak out and demand that the enforcers of the law of the land live up to their sworn oaths and fully investigate who is behind these threats.

CABINET SECRETARIES WITH AUTHORITY OVER U.S. SECURITY FORCES MUST TAKE ACTION FROM WITHIN...

THE DANGER IS THAT A ROGUE ELEMENT WITHIN THE SECURITY FORCES MAY BE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

Actually, the report concluded that Palin DID abuse her power by violating state ethics laws. And that because of that, she could be censured by the state legislature, or impeached. Which the state legislature will take up come January if she's still gov.

So, she may not be a criminal per se. But she at least abused her power, and is unethical.

Just to clear that up.

The Tale of Joe the Senator and Joe the Plumber

McCain won the Debate by Introducing the Desires of Hard Working Americans to get Ahead Back into the Race in the Form of Joe the Plumber-

Joe the Plumber now has a voice, speaking for the middle and upper middle class, trying to get ahead. The REAL Rich has been represented by Penny Pritzker's Candidate. Joe said, sure today it's people making over 250K that will get killed by Obama's taxes, but soon, as Obama's agenda gets more expensive, it will be people making 150K, and so on...it's like that old saying about not speaking out when someone comes for your neighbors....soon there will no one left to speak out when someone comes for you.

Biden made over 245K(!just under the cut off!) a year over the past 10 years and gave less than $370/yr to charity!; But he feels it's "Patriotic" to ask Everyone ELSE to redistribute THEIR earnings.

You know Joe the Senator, LOTS of us wouldn't mind pulling down 245K a year, not paying higher taxes, not giving much to charity....JUST LIKE YOU!
