McCain Supporters Praying for a Virginia Win

Updated 11:33 a.m.
By Juliet Eilperin
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- GOP presidential candidate John McCain kicked off his campaigning this morning with a rally full of religious overtones, as several speakers invoked the Lord on the senator's behalf.

McCain is struggling to hold onto Virginia, which has backed Republican presidential candidates for four decades. Brenda Pogge, a member of the state's House of Delegates, included a prayer in her remarks which asked for "a special blessing for our candidates" and made it clear she was speaking as a Christian.

The speaker who followed, campaign state co-chairman Chris Saxman, recounted that when a fellow airline passenger recently praised Virginia as "God's Country," he retorted that her definition applies to the entire United States. "Ma'am, it's very special," Saxman, a state delegate, said he'd said of Virginia, "but I've got to tell ya, it's all God's country."

McCain, he said, made the right decision to remain a Vietnamese prisoner of war after consulting with God. "When it was just John McCain and the Lord he said, 'I'm in a bind here. The North Vietnamese want me to go home, and I know that that means, both ways.'"

While McCain is focusing on Virginia and Pennsylvania today before flying to New York City to appear on "Saturday Night Live," he plans to spend the final 24 hours before Election Day in seven separate states, traveling from Tampa, Fla., to Virginia, Pennsylvania, Indiana, New Mexico, Nevada before ending the night in Prescott, Ariz. His running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, will go to Ohio, Missouri, Iowa, Colorado, Nevada and her home state that same day.

"The enthusiasm and excitement we generate on Monday will be the electricity that powers our 'Get Out the Vote' efforts on Tuesday" wrote McCain campaign manager Rick Davis in a memo yesterday, adding that McCain and Palin would be "trying to turn out our voters and sway the final undecided voters."

McCain's supporters, waving hand-painted signs declaring "Real Americans For McCain," "Men 4 McCain" and "Keep Virginia Red," cheered enthusiastically throughout.

Once the candidate and his friends and family took the stage, they left the ereligious invocations behind and focused most of their comments on attacking Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) quipped that Obama has a new book out that reveals his liberal leanings.

"It's called, 'How I Stood Up to the Left.' It's in the fiction section, and it's a very short read," Graham declared.

McCain, his voice straining at times, said Obama had demanded "nearly a billion dollars" in special projects known as earmarks, the kind of pork-barrel spending that led to corruption.

"Look at the corruption it has bred in Washington," said McCain, who coughed repeatedly during the chilly, outdoor rally. "We have lost confidence in our government because of corruption. And I'll clean it up."

Obama, he continued, asked for $3 million in federal funds to buy an overhead projector for a planetarium "in guess where? Chicago. Can you afford that? No!"

At the same time, McCain said, his opponent would raise taxes on better-off Americans. "Senator Obama is running to punish the successful," he said.

As he continued to blast the "massive tax increase" he said Obama would pursue if elected, the GOP nominee took pains to distance himself from President Bush.

"We both disagree with President Bush on economic policy," McCain said. "The difference is he thinks taxes have been too low, and I think that spending has been too high."

(McCain has committed to extending and expanding Bush's tax cuts.)

Unlike the introductory speakers, McCain did not invoke God frequently, except to mention that voters needed to worry about "what's going to happen if the Democrats -- God forbid -- get control of Washington" and that the pundits have written off his campaign "just as they have several times before. Bless them."

McCain and Sara Palin fully agree on their economic policies towards the people: That is, to buy with public funds expenssive clothes for themselves and then trickle them down to charity after they no longer want them. Thanks, war hero!

Obama is already making closing statements, while McCain is still looking for openings.

McCain worked so hard to earn Bush's endorsement, which he now wants to give up, but ON TOP OF THAT, he just got Duick Chinney's endorsement too! What a Halloween TRIC for McCain. But he earned them both by voting for Bush 90% of the time, and WAS so proud of that at the start of his campaign.

McCain's real problem on this election is that he still can't decide to which of his 13 houses retire in January.

And Sarah Palin is still not sure if she wants Joe Da Plumber for running mate in 20012, and the fact that the Republicans now that, were she to run against Tina Fey, Sarah would certainly lose.

In his very brief career, Obama has been rated the number one ideologue in the Senate. Obama's extremist policies and appointments would undermine the family, human dignity, freedom of conscience and religious expression, and free enterprise. And if that's not enough, Prof. Obama is a naive and foolish academic whose on the job training would endanger the whole world.

There is only one great man on the ballot: Sen. John S. McCain.

McCain knows all about bailing out rich bankers and screwing over middle class and poor people, he's been doing it for years.

McCain - Founding Member of the Keating 5:

McCain was one of the "Keating Five," congressmen investigated on ethics charges for strenuously helping convicted racketeer Charles Keating after he gave them large campaign contributions and vacation trips.

Charles Keating was convicted of racketeering and fraud in both state and federal court after his Lincoln Savings & Loan collapsed, costing the taxpayers $3.4 billion. His convictions were overturned on technicalities; for example, the federal conviction was overturned because jurors had heard about his state conviction, and his state charges because Judge Lance Ito (yes, that judge) screwed up jury instructions. Neither court cleared him, and he faces new trials in both courts.)

McCain intervened on behalf of Charles Keating after Keating gave McCain at least $112,00 in contributions. In the mid-1980s, McCain made at least 9 trips on Keating's airplanes, and 3 of those were to Keating's luxurious retreat in the Bahamas. McCain's wife and father-in-law also were the largest investors (at $350,000) in a Keating shopping center; the Phoenix New Times called it a "sweetheart deal."

McCain was not convicted of any crimes, though the Senate concluded that he exercised "poor judgment." (Furthermore, he got off on some charges by a technicality -- that he was still in the House when he took those vacation trips, and so the Senate couldn't prosecute him. The House concluded that THEY couldn't prosecute him because he had moved to the Senate.)

Politico brings word that McCain advisors are upping the verbal leak campaign against Sarah Palin, who must long for the days when members of her campaign were calling her a hockey mom and Joe Six-Pack.

Whack job. It's a good charge, cause it's true! This is one of my favorite leaks from the anti-Palin forces working for McCain, right up with the claim that she's "going rogue." Like Iran?

I've never seen a breakdown in discipline like this on a presidential campaign. It testifies to McCain's lack of leadership and to the state of his campaign. Knowing they're going to lose, Mittens' kittens are angling for advantage against Palin going into the 2012 primary.

Ah, yes, the coming GOP primary. Fantasize, my friends, with me. It's 2011, Obama and the Democrats in Congress have passed good progressive legislation to help bring us out of recession, institute universal health care, and end our dependence on foreign oil. Our troops are home from Iraq. Then we will all get to sit back and watch Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, and whoever else fight for the right to lose to Obama.

When I was in the army my chaplain was ranger, and special forces qualified. He was hardcore. He use to pass out candy bars he called the candy spiritual grenades.

When some would say something negative about the enemy he would always say pray for your enemies just as hard as you pray for your ranger buddy.

He did not study war on the battle field. You have preachers justifying a war we should never have started. Attention Preachers stop studying war, and focus on the flock spiritual well being.

More WP swallowing of Rick Davis spin. I hope that George Stephanopoulos asks McCain-Palin campaign manager Rick Davis about all of that money he took from Freddie Mac. According to the NYT, he took $15,000 a month for "doing nothing" which, I'm sure, amounted to a lot more than just "nothing" -- if you know what I mean. I guess we'll have to wait until Rick Davis testifies before Congress next year when the scandal that is Freddie Mac is properly investigated. Rick Davis is a sterling example of what's wrong with Washington. What purpose does the guy serve other than provided "access" to Senator McCain?

McCain does not have the ability to fix this economic crisis. After declaring the fundamentals of the economy strong, he created a political circus in Washington by mucking up bailout negotiations; a deplorable campaign stunt, considering he and his political cronies helped cause the current meltdown.

It was McCain and his economic adviser Phil Gramm who pushed for the deregulation that helped lead to the banking crisis, and it was McCain's crony Rick Davis who had deep lobbyist ties to Freddie Mac. Don't let others be fooled by McCain's economic grandstanding because the reality is his policies and principles will only exacerbate our financial hardships.

McCain is being deceitful with his sudden populist message and support for regulation; his economic policies still favor our nation's wealthy elite.

All this, when she already makes $125,000 a year as governor and pockets an extra $22,883 in energy extraction royalties.

Palin is a chisler supreme.

All of which makes the fact that she charged $16,951 in expenses charged to the state, including 312 per diem allowances for staying in her own home just that much more amazing.

A dual income family, with Sarah earning $125K. Free travel (even for the family), and now free clothes, hair and makeup. They can actually go out in her backyard and shoot a moose, keeping her family in free mooseburger for a year. And still she feels the need to cheat. Shoot that moose for free and still charge the state $60 per burger. And she claims she deserves every bit of it.

Now that's what I call a perverse sense of entitlement.

"Sounds like socialism to me," to borrow a phrase.

Just another fake "bootstrapper" Republican. What a shocker.

Meanwhile, we all have to endure the indignity of Palin turning the campaign for the Vice Presidency into some kind of FOX reality TV makeover show, where they take some ridiculously not-ready-for-prime-time pol and dress her up, push her out on the stage, and see if they can turn her into a VP in 10 weeks.

What the f^ck, right? It's just being second in line to the nuclear launch codes. No big thing. We could even do a whole co-promotional deal with moose sandwiches at Subway.

Thanks, Republicans. You sure do love our country n' stuff and goodluck to you in your newly minted 4th party gadfly status starting in 2009.

MCCAIN IS OUT OF TOUCH WITH MIDDLE-CLASS AMERICA'S ECONOMIC TROUBLES!
McCain in April 08 declared that there had been "great progress economically" during the Bush years. On more than one occasion, he diagnosed Americans' concerns over the dismal U.S. economy as "psychological." (Phil Gramm, McCain's close friend and economic adviser supposedly excommunicated over his "whiners" remarks, is back with the McCain campaign full time again.) McCain, a man who owns eight homes nationwide, in March lectured Americans facing foreclosure that they ought to be "doing what is necessary -- working a second job, skipping a vacation, and managing their budgets -- to make their payments on time." And when all else fails, McCain told the people of the economically devastated regions in Martin County, Kentucky and Youngstown, Ohio, there's always eBay. McCain doesn't understand our tanking economy because it doesn't affect him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FD_M2BEl64

The $100 Million Man
Courtesy of his wife Cindy's beer distribution fortune (one her late father apparently chose not to share with her half-sister Kathleen), the McCains are worth well over $100 million. (In the two-page tax summary she eventually released to the public, Cindy McCain reported another $6 million in 2006.) As Salon reported back in 2000, the second Mrs. McCain's millions were essential in launching her husband's political career. Unsurprisingly, the Weekly Standard's Matthew Continetti, who four years ago called Theresa Heinz-Kerry a "sugar mommy," has been silent on the topic of Cindy McCain.

The Joys of (Eight) Home Ownership
While fellow adulterer John Edwards was pilloried for his mansion, John McCain's eight homes around the country have received little notice or criticism. His properties include a 10 acre lake-side Sedona estate, euphemistically called a "cabin" by the McCain campaign, and a home featured in Architectural Digest. The one featuring "remote control window coverings" was recently put up for sale. Still, their formidable resources did not prevent the McCains from failing to pay taxes on a tony La Jolla, California condo used by Cindy's aged aunt.

The Anheuser-Busch Windfall
While John McCain played a critical role in facilitating DHL's takeover of Airborne (and with it, the looming loss of 8,000 jobs in Wilmington, Ohio), Cindy McCain is set to earn a staggering multi-million dollar pay-day from the acquisition of Anheuser-Busch by the Belgian beverage giant, In Bev. As the Wall Street Journal reported in July, Mrs. McCain runs the third largest Anheuser-Busch distributorship in the nation, and owns between $2.5 and $5 million in the company's stock.

Also, since God is a Republican and an American patriot, how could he love ALL of America? What about the anti-American areas Governor Palin mentioned?

What about places like New York and San Francisco, which leading Republican ministers have already said were punished by God (911 and AIDS) for their sinfulness?

In fact, how can God even love all of Virginia? McCain's brother Joe has already said that swathes of the State are "Communist-occupied territory". Are they saying God is a communist?

Every good Republican knows that God hates northern Virginians, and only loves the REAL Americans in the south.

I also wonder why he also made us godless foreigners in his image, when Americans are his special people?

Or maybe Americans ARE closer to God's image than we are. Maybe God is a 350lb diabetic, slack-jawed, glazy-eyed blob in a baseball cap.

Call me agnostic, but I just think that God has too much to worry about to be tooo overly concerned with senseless political petitions disguised as prayer. Sometimes these prayers sound more pagan than anything - I mean, how many gods are there? The god of political favors, the god that oversees the prosperity gospel, the god of the military, the god of the economy, the god of the Republicans, the god of the Democrats, the god of the Fundamentalist Pentecostal Right, the god of the Moderate Progressives. . . and so and so on. . . amen.

As of November 5, 2008, when President Obama is officially elected into office, our company will instill a few new policies which are in keeping with his new, inspiring issues of change and fairness:
1. All salespeople will be pooling their sales commissions into a common pool that
will be divided equally between all of you. This will serve to give those of you
who are underachieving a “fair shake.”
2. All hourly employees will be pooling their wages, including overtime, into a
common pool, dividing it equally amongst yourselves. This will help those who are
“too busy for overtime” to reap the rewards from those who have more spare time and can work extra hours.
3. All top management will now be referred to as “ the government.” We will not participate in this “pooling” experience because the law doesn't apply to us.
4. The “government” will give eloquent speeches to all employees every week,
encouraging its workers to continue to work hard “for the good of all.”

5. The employees will be thrilled with these new policies because it's “good to
spread the wealth.” Those of you who have underachieved will finally get an
opportunity; those of you who have worked hard and had success will feel more
“patriotic.”
6. The last few people who were hired should clean out their desks. Don't feel bad
though, because President Obama will give you free healthcare, free handouts, free
oil for heating your home, free food stamps, and he'll let you stay in your home for as long as you want even if you can't pay your mortgage. If you appeal directly to our democratic congress, you might even get a free flat screen TV and a coupon for free haircuts (shouldn't all Americans be entitled to nice looking hair?)!!!

If for any reason you are not happy with the new policies, you may want to rethink
your vote on November 4th.

"McCain, his voice straining at times, said Obama had demanded "nearly a billion dollars" in special projects known as earmarks, the kind of pork-barrel spending that led to corruption."

Sarah Palin touted her record as a reformer who worked to end the "abuses of earmark spending in Congress."

But earmarks have never been a dirty word in Alaska, a huge state dotted with small communities that have enormous dollar needs for sewers, roads and other projects.

Instead, earmarks — pet projects that members of Congress fund but that no federal agency has requested — have become a mainstay of political life here, and one that Palin embraced from early on in her career as a mayor of Wasilla to the governor's mansion in Juneau.

Just this year, she sent to Sen. Ted. Stevens, R-Alaska, a proposal for 31 earmarks totaling $197 million — more, per person, than any other state.

The McCain/Palin campaign is nothing but constant lies and deceit.

McCain's followers are not only praying, they're pulling dirty tricks as fast as they can think them up. If they relied on truth and honor, they know they don't have a chance. CNN reported that flyers were being passed out in VA with official VA State LOGO stating that only Republicans may vote on Nov 4 and Dems will vote on Nov . McCain needs to denounce this clearly and loudly now. He has already forsaken all sense of honor. He bears false witness and he shuns honor. Shame on him. Winning is not worth that. Let the truth be known. Let people make a decision based on the truth, not McCain lies.

Novemenber 5th, 2008 McCain/Palin - Old news. David Brooks a conservative commentator said it will take the Republican Party 25 years to settle the infighting in the Party over those who are clinging to "tinkle" down Reagannomics and the progressive republicans who know change is inevitable. Its 1929 all over. A lot of a people get rich in bad times. The top 9 banks some profitable just got $125 Billion to get bigger. This is old money versus new money. Thomas Jefferson warned the biggest threat to freedom is the banks. Banks nationalized 2008 brought to you by the Republican Party (Some delusional Republicans refuse to believe how corrupt their party is and blame Bill Clinton and unsuspecting hardworking homeowners for all of the current problems). I wish it was that simple but the Bush's and Cheney knew exactly what they were doing. Consolidation of power in the executive branch and accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few and the evangelicals and good conservative Americans were taken for a ride. Now people want 90% with Bush, McCain, not rational. McCain said he does not understand economics, the economy was sound, and hardworking homeowners were speculators and let them go into foreclosure. Economists now say it they bailed out the home owner in the beginning, like Obama wanted, the credit markets would not have froze. Even Alan Greenspan said he was wrong about regulation. The denial is thick!

Gee, I'm praying America will once again be land of the free after eight years of neo-nazi evanglical neocons seizing unprecedented executive power, trampling on the constitution, practicing socialism with Wall Street, AIG and big banks; starting an illegal war, torturing people in violation of international law and practicing (once again) a campaign of division through racial and religious intolerance and hate.

I guess we'll soon find out if my god is bigger than their god.

While I appreciate your posts in that regard, I should have said I was NOT interested in the white plastic ones with Obama's face on the inside bottom.. They're tasteless and common and not what I'm interested in owning.

Rather, I AM interested in having one or more of the "CEO Limited Edition" 18kt gold spit cup signed by Karl Rove with George Soros' picture on the inside bottom.

John W. McCain is a desperate man. From his selecting of the ignoramous fundie wingnut Sarah Palin, to phony-bologna gimmicks, to creating "Joe the Plumber" - who's a tax-evading Neo-Nazi Republican and isn't a certified plumber, to making creepy robo-calls because his campaign is too lazy to talk to people personally. John W. McCane is unfit for command.

Barack Hussein Obama's Kenya Aunt is here illegally for FOUR YEARS, Now (ILLEGAL), and was NOT given ASYLUM, according to the Associated Press.. she "is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago".

It was posted today on the BOSTON.com that Barack Hussein Obama has an ILLEGAL Kenya auntie living in Boston Public Housing unit. "Barack Obama's aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned. Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as "Aunti Zeituni" in Obama's memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2008/11/01/obama_aunt_reportedly_in_us_illegally/

Obama's illegal Kenya aunt living in Boston Public Housing deserves to be reviewed and questioned. And this idea of "spreading the wealth around"... I'm not encouraged to think that housing illegal immigrants is where or what my money should support. Illegal is illegal...and Obama's family should not be above the law or housed with public money any more than any other illegal immigrant. Obama's illegal family members should be deported as should any other illegal residents be deported. It's no wonder Barack Hussein Obama doesn't support immediate 'deportation' of illegal immigrants (They are of his tribe)Evidently our dear Governor Patrick supports illegal immigrants of Barack Hussein Obama's family by housing them in Boston Public Housing units. Is that 'racist' or just taking care of the 'tribe'?

They are trying to discourage people from getting to the polls (voter suppression).
Add that to the illegal voter registration and voter fraud courtesy of Obama's ACORN and Project Vote- EVERYONE must get out and vote McCain-Palin on Tuesday.

Here's the zogby "poll" that matters most:

http://www.zogby.com/50state/

They have Obama at 286-electoral college. And that's arguably a conservative estimate. The bottom line is that McCain would need a miracle to win. Short of divine intervention, he -probably- won't. Even if he were to win all the battleground states--which is highly unlikely, he'd have to pick off Pennsylvania. I read somewhere that a McCain win at this juncture would be like drawing an inside straight in poker. It could happen, but the odds are stacked against him.

Watch out for the Obama trolls
Three things the Obamedia will do to depress Republican turnout and help Obama
(1) Calls for McCain to just give up and quit, because the race is over
2) Wild claims of Obama winning states that shock and surprise you
(3) Repeated insistance that blacks and young people will decide this election, and they are all going to vote in record numbers for Obama

Latest compilation polls.

Chance for McLame to win down to 2.8% and he MUST win Pennsylvania.

Polls close at 7 PM in Virginia and Pa. on election day. If both are called for Obama its over.

McCain voters in the west will know it and the rout will be on.

I think you can forget the earlier, misleading polling data that was posted earlier by an obvious McCain supporter. If you want some real data, check out the 2004 polling data from the Bush-Kerry election from battleground states. The one-week, composites were dead on accurate for all states, except one. However, Obama's leads are larger and more consistent than either Bush or Kerry's leads in similar states. This has got to worry any McCain supporter if they bother to read the information:

McCain would rather save money (so the neocons can steal it later) than give our troops decent armoured protection.

We've spent $5 trillion dollars on the war and supposedly rebuilding Iraq (mostly going to no-bid contracts), and they can't afford to protect our troops! That's a lie.

WAPO the Trail-
A Kenyan aunt of Sen. Barack Obama has been living quietly for years in a South Boston public housing project, according to public housing officials. The Obama campaign later confirmed the woman, Zeituni Onyango, is the senator's paternal aunt.

In his memoir, Obama wrote affectionately about the woman, known as "Aunt Zeituni," who was the first Kenyan relative he met when he traveled there.

William McGonigle, deputy director of the Boston Public Housing Authority, said officials only became aware of Onyango's connection to the Democratic presidential nominee last week, after receiving inquiries from a reporter with the Times of London. Onyango then confirmed the relationship.

He said that Onyango worked as a residential health advocate for the housing agency in exchange for a stipend.

Try to focus on the $700b wasted in iraq. the $700b sofar to avoid collapse after 8 years of republican deregulatatory kleptocracy. the Dramatic expansion of the federal payroll and contractors. This "Reagan proved deficits don't matter" style of governing led to $10T in national debt.

There was nothing "conservative" about the Bush admin. A vote for McCain is a vote to keep the same crew of faux-christian neo-con-artists at the levers of power! We need a clean sweep to rebuild america. It will be an Obama Landslide.

The electoral college is where it's at. The tightening of the race is typical, showing that partisans generally come home to roost. In terms of the electoral college, there's been virtually no movement. Of course, anything's possible. But at this stage, McCain is on the defensive, has too much ground to cover, and is not showing any signficiant leads in the battleground states.

Posted by: con_crusher | November 1, 2008 12:03 PM | Report abuse

The problem is that McCain hasn't really done anything to warrant a come-from-behind victory. I'm thinking about that phoney prize he suggested for a battery-operated car, Joe the Plumber, Sarah Palin, and a host of other gimmicks. It's a no-brainer that Palin is unqualified for the position, for which she doesn't even know the job description. For that decision alone, McCain is unfit for command. With that decision, he arguably did not put "Country First." The man is a hothead who has a very bad habit of sticking his index finger in people's chest. McCain has flipflopped on so many issues. His word is not bond. He has cut and run from his own public, recorded statements, time and time again. No McCain, No Palin, No W. episode 3.

The Republican Party is not about the United States and Americans, it is all about the free market economy or get rich at any cost. The cost of republican GOP leadership greed is a poverty stricken United States and a shrinking American middle class unable to buy a house, send children to college, or go to the doctor. ***WHERE'S THE WAPO COVERAGE?

Posted by: thecannula | November 1, 2008 11:12 AM | Report abuse

The media seems to have been covering for Biden for some time. While news stories still talk about Dan Quayle’s spelling mistake 18 years later, there has been almost no news coverage of Biden’s numerous wacky statements. What if Quayle had said something similar to Biden’s recent statement that, "When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, 'Look, here's what happened.'" A neat trick given that Herbert Hoover was president in 1929 and no one was watching television.

It might not fit the simple template for a 36-year veteran of the Senate to not understand what vice presidents do (after all, eight vice presidents have served with him), but Biden knew less about this than the political outsider, Sarah Palin. Given that they are running to be vice president, why didn’t that story dominate the news coverage after the debate?
-- Finally, an amusing point as evidence that Biden is just one of the people he pointed to, inviting anyone to have a beer with him at "Katie's Restaurant" in Wilmington, Del. Unfortunately, people will have a hard time taking him up on his offer, since the restaurant hasn't had that name for probably 15 years.
