Sarah Palin Pardons a Turkey

By Philip Rucker
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin visited a turkey farm in her home town of Wasilla yesterday to grant the traditional Thanksgiving pardon to one turkey. But as the former Republican vice presidential hopeful took questions from reporters, a farm worker was seen slaughtering other turkeys and feeding the birds into a grinder.

Video by KTUU-TV of the governor and the bloody work over her shoulder became an overnight YouTube hit. Holding a cup of coffee, Palin said of the outing at Triple D Farms, "Oh, this was neat."

"I was happy to get to be invited to participate in this," Palin continued. "For one, you need a little bit of levity in this job, especially with so much that has gone on in the last couple of months that has been so political obviously that it's nice to get out and do something to promote local business and to just participate in something that isn't so heavy-handed politics that it invites criticism. Certainly we'll probably invite criticism for even doing this, too, but at least this was fun."

The Anchorage Daily News recorded Palin standing in the noisy turkey corral reading the official pardon proclamation and selecting the lucky turkey.

"I, Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, anticipating and hoping that in the spirit of Thanksgiving, Alaskans everywhere will find adequate nourishment elsewhere and without this particular turkey I do hereby grant Thanksgiving a full amnesty and pardon and it is so ordered and we will pick one of the big Toms," Palin said, before picking out her pardoned turkey.

This has nothing to do with "liberals" not knowing where their turkey's come from. Everyone knows that. This is about being completely oblivious. She is a politician, and I use that term loosely, who is deeply embedded in the public consciousness. When you are such a person you do not do certain things. Talking about political issues 15 feet away from turkeys being slaughtered is not one of them. Change the location and the result is always going to be the same. Standing in front of a dog being euthanized. Or a woman giving birth. Or anything else that is not appropriate given the context of what she was saying.

Fitting final act for dimwit Palin.

Whenever and whatever Palin vociferates aloud, indeed, makes one think of gobble, gobble. Where Palin learned her (butchered) mother tongue is a difficult guess.

..."nice to get out and do something to promote local business and to just participate in something that isn't so heavy-handed politics that it invites criticism. Certainly we'll probably invite criticism for even doing this, too, but at least this was fun."

Only turkeys and Gov. Palin (somehow I doubt it) could make sense of her weird sentences.

I am so torn on Palin as a politician. When she's just acting oblivious and herself, I like that she comes off as genuine. Good for her for showing she knows where Thanksgiving turkey comes from. It would be great if this video made people stop whining about paying a couple of bucks more for better quality birds raised in better farms and maybe they'll waste less of the meat!!

I just wish the politician Palin would go away, the one who cheerleads for the conservative GOP, NRA, and anti-abortionists beyond what I think she genuinely believes. How else does she suggest Obama is a terrorist a month ago and now he's just a cool dude with promising plans in the White House? She never really hated the guy or felt scared of him. It's obvious that she was just trying to get votes. Sigh...

Whatever happened to fact checkers?

The funnel in question is NOT A GRINDER. Grinders are for "Fargo" and Saddam, not for putting turkeys out of their misery.

We're talking here a KILLING CONE, into which the turkey is put upside down, the head pulled out at the bottom and its neck sliced so it can be bled. It is said that within seconds the suffering bird goes into shock. You can read more about it here.

Mark Steyn was right when he said re the fabulists at MSNBC:

"This is a great caption:

"TURKEYS DIE AS GOVERNOR PALIN TAKES QUESTIONS FROM MEDIA

"Or was it:

"MEDIA DIE AS GOVERNOR PALIN TAKES QUESTIONS FROM TURKEYS."

Gobble, gobble, gobble

It's a real gem, one for eternity! If you've watched the longer versions on Youtube, you will have to say that even the best SNL writers could not have scripted a better skit. It appeared that Palin's speech writer (and Palin herself) and the photographer had even rehearsed their actions beforehand. And how can you forget the funny-looking butcher in the background??

You mean, turkeys are vegetables?

I have little regard for Palin, but this really isn't her fault. HOWEVER, it can ( and probably will be ) edited to make her appear completely callous.

Gotta love the way the loser-righties try to turn this into a "liberals=PETA" story. They lost the White House and the Senate, BIG TIME, so misrepresentation is all really all they have left, isn't it?

I'm a proud turkey-eating liberal and find it hilarious that this woman can babble on incoherently while the 'unpardoned' turkeys are getting their throats slit by an incredulous worker in the background.

That said, can you stop reporting on Sarah Palin now? Her 15 minutes were up long ago.

The SMELL would Kill Them!

Some Americans are so far removed from the reality involved in Butchering, it makes me fear for your survival if things ever got Harder at all!

LOL! Cleaning a Deer or Hog would turn half of you into Vegetarians!

Guess what? Venison, is 30% Leaner than Chicken, and one of the few Meats safe to consume raw! Try eating Pork, Chicken, TURKEY!, or Beef Raw!

I find it amazing that Liberals had no idea where their Turkey Dinner came from. Perhaps they thought Whole Foods grew Turkeys in Hydroponic fields? Sillyness at its best.

Who Cares?????!!!??? I'd rather know what happened in the last episode of the Simpsons....
Palin will probably take the state helicopter & go turkey hunting, then try to explain how life is so important to her even though she loves blasting the heads off of beautiful animals in the wild- what a bimbo..

Posted by: rsampson02 | November 22, 2008 9:41 AM | Report abuse

Only an idiot cannot see that this is terrible public relations. The fact that she "pardoned" one of the birds made it even more of a pr disaster. Why didn't she grab the pardoned bird ans say, "See what will happen to you after I leave Mr. Birdy!!!! Hahahahahahaha! And remember Kids, vote fr the Democratic Party!"

The point is not that turkeys are killed. The point is that Palin is either unlucky or stupid enough to do a "light-hearted" press conference while a turkey is being slaughtered in the background.

And the way Palin's army of Fatso-following conformists defend her shows that to be a Republican at this moment, you have to be stupid. There is a reason PETA and Animal Rights activists hold press conferences at a Slaughter House. Not Governors. Not Presidents. PETA.

Except for the rough gang at National Review, our modern day version of men's men--too bad NONE of them know how to find an Army Recruitment Center, people don't want to watch animals being slaughtered.

Posted by: wapoisrightwingrag | November 22, 2008 9:26 AM | Report abuse

Even without the turkey business, she cannot make much sense. You think you know what she means but you are never really sure. Sometimes it is just words ".....building the team that is continuously being built..". Hate rhetoric requires much less intellect and that is what made her so dangerous for America. Very surprising she is even governor. This does not reflect badly on her but on the people of the state of Alaska and on those who voted for her for VP.

Posted by: nick13 | November 22, 2008 8:47 AM | Report abuse

She made her own comments about her own importance in the scheme of things. Her importance in the economic growth for Alaska whose State is totally reliant on natural resources and income. But I thought it ironic that during this interview, there was a blood soaked worker of the turkey farm, watching her bedazzeled by her presence, and allowing a turkey to prolong its head cutting demise. It was a disgusting backdrop. That Gov.Palin thought was funny.

Well if that is all the Alaskan's have for
hygienic and also humane slaughtering of fowl, then you should update your laws. I wouldn't buy a turkey from that farm at all.

Hicksville again eh., and this woman aspires for national credibility. She presents as an empty headed woman (let alone politician) that is so crass she can't understand that standing in front of a slaughter of turkeys doesn't enhance her image! Let alone the hygienic laws for slaughtering fowl in the open, without
hair covering, gloves and clothing, and it is done in the fowl yard, rather than a
reasonably hygienic control enclosed abattoir.

Give me patience. This woman must be a blight on the GOP, and it is them that will
behead her (hypothetically) and must be
rubbing their hands in glee watching her
do herself damage publically and as a prospective Presidential nominee? She must be joking ... I fear she isn't????

wmw4, Thanks for your input. That is not a grinder. It is a secure humane capture for the bird, while they bleed out. It is part of a process designed to induce the least stress to the bird, and produce a better product.

I knew it would turn out like it did it was no surprise no need to be sour. $500 million in dubious contributions and a biased media is more than is needed to fool americas a lot of americans this year.

Especially when you have a large population of uneducated bottom feeders who don't understand how to forward civilization and are too self centered to think beyond tomorrow. Dear Mr. Rucker,
Where in the world did you get the idea the birds were being fed into a grinder? What possible reason would there be for grinding a live bird, feathers and all? It simply a cone to restrain them while they are slaughtered (not gross at all - a necessary prelude to the traditional family dinner most of us will have next week). You need to think a bit more before you write.
I'm hardly a Palin fan, but you can't really blame her - this was going on behind her back - she couldn't see it. I presume this sort of this is why most politicians have press aids/communications directors. If she has one and he/she was with her, that person ought to be fired. If she doesn't have one, she needs to hire one quickly before her foot is so firmly lodged in her mouth it never comes out. Then take some advice from the American Express commercial - never leave home with out that person.

The trial was politically timed; you are a tool if you don't recognize that. Stevens should have stepped off the ballot and many republicans wanted him to however it was his choice. I don't agree with corrupt politicians of any party. Don't worry though the democrats got themselves another senate seat to try to push an extreme left partisan agenda by manipulating the situation so you should be happy.

Oh and by the way his $250K in accepted gifts is really no worse than Obama's accepted $400K gift off his house from Rezko. Just Obama did it in a way that was legal by technicality. But I guess that's ok since he's a democrat right?

The democratic party is re-nominating people like Frank and Dodd to Financial Services and Banking committees after the housing situation and their congressional records supporting risky loans.

Dodd lied about "not knowing" about his preferential home loan but of course that didn't get called to the table after the VP of Countrywide made very clear these senators knew exactly what they were getting.

Point is both sides have corruption problems but the media is selective on which you hear about.

Sarah Palin is the Governor of Alaska. As such, I assume she has many duties (some important, and some more ceremonial/traditional in nature). Thus, I'm sure that intrepid reporters will, for the foreseeable future, have a continued source of stories of "what Sarah did today".

But honestly, does anyone really care?

I often see reader's questions to the Post asking why they are not giving this or that story greater coverage, and the Post usually answers that they have limited resources and limited space in the paper.

I say it probably has more to do with a conscious decision to cover these non-news stories in the hopes they will sell papers.

What did the Governor of South Dakota do today? Or the Governor of Rhode Island? Why are they (and others) not equally important?

Gov Palin is absolutely unchanged in her views as a result of the election. The first part of the KTUU-TV clip she says that she was glad to go out during the campaign among "Real Americans" who want "government to get out of the way."

I'm an American (I guess being a citizen who recently completed 29 years as a military officer counts, doesn't it) who wants government to help solve serious problems, not get out of anyone's way....but, then again, I'm not a Christian and I'm from the East Coast, so by definition I'm not a "Real American."

Don't worry democrats already have plenty of convicted criminals Rangel, Jefferson and an increasing number of mayors. The latest out of Massachusettes is several state democrats being busted for accepting bribes. Gee I wonder why their state is having budget problems.

Remember corruption occurs heavily and equally on both sides of the aisle.

I love how all the democratic metro area strongholds and states are all having budget problems. Yet somehow democrats are great on the economy and will do well even though they can't make a state or even metro area viable.

Oh my gosh. I can see the SNL writers having a field day on this.

Palin peed also this morning. For crying loud, what is the heck, just leave the stupid moron alone cold there in Alaska. They almost send us in the senate a convicted criminal.

Idiot news or at best non-news. Sorry to see the Washington Post going with the flow.

What is this strange fascination that journalists have with Sarah Palin's every move? Most of it comes across as obsessed and b^tchy, like the gay men who used to be obsessed with Liz Taylor's every move.

I already have my PALIN 2012 T-Shirt ... back in the lower 48 she will be on Fox News ... then that will project her right into the GOP nomination ahead of Jindahl

My favorite part is when a reporter asks about government programs that might be "on the chopping block."

I do feel sorry for the turkeys being slaughtered....

However, doesn't anyone care about the english language?

She slaughters the english language every time she opens her mouth.....

Those turkeys have it easy comapared to english grammar...

Yeah, the Palin bashing continues. Yet, before she became under 24/7 scrutiny she had the huevos to sell a Governor's plane because Alaska didn't need it.

Now, the whole country is screaming at auto makers for flying in their private planes.

Folks, Palin was way ahead of her time.

What does this story have to do with the transition of power to the 44th President of the United States? Seems like it belongs in an Entertainment blog, or, if you must call it political, at The Trail.

Yea Sarah! Keep on standing up to the liberal male establishment and the lazy do nothing liberal women.

All working women and working mothers are proud of you and want to keep hearing about you!

Enough about mighty King Obama and his paternalistic government - give us more on a real American woman!

Why? Did it sneeze?

Posted by: dcsween | November 21, 2008 1:30 PM | Report abuse

Whoa, I watched it again. They were cutting the throats and letting the blood drain out. Amazing...

Well, Palin was right about one thing. She's in charge of the turkey. No one else seems to be able to keep her under control.

Why is the Washington Post wasting space on Sarah Palin trivia? Isn't there some real news going on in the world?

Posted by: mesite | November 21, 2008 1:16 PM | Report abuse

I miss Sarah ... although if she were back in the lower 48 she will be shopping at WalMart like the most of us. Wal-Mart's market share is the only bright light in the economy. Starbucks is way down. Guess we have all woken up.

Now I'm planning to watch SNL tomorrow night. They shouldn't let a momemt like that go by without a parody. You listenin' Tina?

Sarah Palin for SOS ... now that is really reaching across the aisle!! Then she can actually get to visit Leningrad ... That's Moscow Sarah

The wink at the end was priceless.

But I have a question: Why feed a turkey into a grinder? I thought they were better whole? Or does it just grind up the head? I seriously would like to know. How does that contraption work? My guess is it simply cuts off the head and allows the blood to drain out into the collector below. Now seeing that happen during the interview would have really been Palin pulling a Palin.

They got a turkey like Palin into a slaughterhouse and let her out of alive?

For shame.

Sarah playing president.

What other dress up games does she like?

Posted by: JohnQuimby | November 21, 2008 1:04 PM | Report abuse

Hre is where it is at:

Governor Bobby JINDAHL the Great American East Indian as the GOP best hope for the future of the party!!

Hi my Republican Friends ... can you see that happening?

Not Mitt ... Not Hukabee who is splittting the vote with Sarah.

It is Bobby!!

Posted by: amitchell13 | November 21, 2008 12:55 PM | Report abuse

Sarah Palin is too comical and not serious enough to be in government. I think she was the laughing stock of the Republican Party during her campaign. I was hoping somebody had pardoned here before the campaign ended.

What happens when you spend all of your time on the national stage stonewalling and bashing the media? The media will just go ahead and quote your vacuous run-on sentences in their glorious entirety.

Posted by: Potter2 | November 21, 2008 12:52 PM | Report abuse

I don't think the guy in the background is "feeding the birds into a grinder." The funnel is a way of restraining the birds in an inverted position while they are killed and bled out. Quick and clean way to slaughter a lot of gobblers in a short time. As for Governor "Runner Up again? Darn it!" Palin, she manages to be vapid and obnoxious as ever.

Posted by: kguy1 | November 21, 2008 12:50 PM | Report abuse

Palin succesfully pandered to the NRA crowd by having slaughter take place as she spoke, in her usual circle of gibberish, thinking it makes her sound intelligent. Please do run in '12, so as to insure another Dem victory.

Why is this a story? And why is it included in WP's Presidential transition coverage?

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not a fan of Palin and don't mind when it's pointed out when she does ridiculous things. But this is not news and treating it as such by a national publication is petty.

Politicians across the country pardon turkeys every Thanksgiving; it's barely national news when the President does it, let alone when it's done by the governor of a minor state. And the fact that other turkeys are seen being slaughtered in the background? Bad PR move by Palin's handlers and the turkey farm, but what do people think happens to the thousands of other turkeys that aren't pardoned?

Should it make Alaskan news as a feature story? Sure. Should it get a YouTube buzz for amusingly ironic news coverage? Probably. Should the Washington Post be including it with Presidential news coverage? Hell no.

Posted by: lhayes79 | November 21, 2008 12:44 PM | Report abuse

Palin doesn't need to be in the news anymore, but this would have been an amusing story regardless of who the governor was.

Posted by: legendarypunk | November 21, 2008 12:41 PM | Report abuse

It's NOT news when the governor, any governor, goes to a turkey farm to "pardon" a turkey. It's news (if you can call it that) when a turkey is presented to you for your eating, and the turkey is pardoned.

A governor going to a place to create a story isn't a story.

I really really miss her. Nice touch to have the turkey slaughter in the background. Should have let her chop one...

Posted by: DontGetIt | November 21, 2008 12:39 PM | Report abuse

If she wants to stay on the national stage with any credibility, she needs to hire better handlers. That background scene could have been spotted and dealt with by a rookie PR person. Sounds like her PR people are the real turkeys. (Sorry. Couldn't resist.)

Was that Ted?

Posted by: amitchell13 | November 21, 2008 12:38 PM | Report abuse

Given that she was part of the losing ticket, and obviously unqualified to be a VP candidate, it's totally ridiculous how this woman still makes headlines. I mean, is the "pardoning" of a bird by an Alaskan governor really newsworthy?

Posted by: lwilliamson1 | November 21, 2008 12:37 PM | Report abuse

Idiot news. Idiot news. Idiot news. Except for the part where someone else was killing turkeys in the background--ok, that was funny. Otherwise: idiot news.
