'Team of Rivals' an Amazon.com Bestseller

By Garance Franke-Ruta
The buzz about President-elect Barack Obama potentially selecting former rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to be his Secretary of State appears to have heightened interest in Doris Kearns Goodwin's biography of Abraham Lincoln, "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln" -- a book Obama said in early 2008 would serve as a guidepost for his presidency, especially when it came to having "dissenting voices" in his administration.

As of 9:30 a.m. Eastern time on Saturday, the book was listed as having an Amazon.com Sales Rank of 14 on the online behemoth's "Bestsellers in Books" category, which is updated hourly. "Team of Rivals" was originally published in 2005 and reviewed in The Washington Post on Nov. 6 of that year.

Online booksellers' sales rankings can rapidly pick up surges in public interest. By way of comparison, the book was not on the pre-Clinton buzz Washington-area bestsellers list maintained by The Washington Post, dated Nov. 9, or on The New York Times hardcover or paperback nonfiction bestsellers lists, dated Nov. 14.

"Rivals" was also No. 1 in the Amazon.com categories of History, U.S. Historical Biographies & Memoirs and Presidents & Heads of State Biographies & Memoirs. In the presidential biography category, the book was at No. 1 (paperback), No. 3 (hardcover) and No. 10 (Audio CD).

Barack Obama topped Goodwin for the No. 1 slot in the broader Amazon.com Biographies & Memoirs sales category, however, with "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream." In No. 2: Also Obama, with "Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance."

Obama's books were bestsellers on all three lists -- those of Amazon.com, The Washington Post and the New York Times.
