Asked About New House, Bush Plays Coy
By Dan Eggen
President Bush just bought a house in Dallas, but apparently he doesn't want to talk about it.
During a ceremony today in which Bush signed proclamations honoring service in World War II, a pool reporter assigned to cover the event, Todd Gillman of the Dallas Morning News, attempted to get a reaction from the departing president about his new digs.
"Mr. President -- you excited about your house in Dallas?" Gillman asked.
"Todd, why do you care?" Bush responded. "You live in Washington, D.C."
The White House disclosed Thursday that the president and first lady had bought a house in the Preston Hollow neighborhood in north Dallas, though it declined to release an address or other details because the couple hasn't moved in yet. Nonetheless, Dallas media outlets had already identified the likely site: an 8,500-square-foot house built in 1959 on a leafy cul-de-sac that was purchased in October by Bush's longtime accountant as a trustee. Records indicate that the trustee took out a $3 million note to pay for the house, which county records value at a much more affordable $2.1 million.
The Bushes will still hold on to their Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford, Tex., but will live primarily in Dallas, where Bush will have his presidential library and museum. The couple lived in the same neighborhood before Bush became Texas governor in 1995.
