Bill Clinton's Foundation Raised Millions From Foreign Governments

By Philip Rucker
Former president Bill Clinton's charitable foundation has raised tens of millions of dollars from foreign governments including Saudi Arabia, Australia, Norway, Kuwait and Qatar, according to a list of 205,000 donors made public this morning.

The donations from foreign governments, celebrities and other philanthropists, which had been anonymous for more than a decade, were disclosed today as part of an accord reached with President-elect Barack Obama that enables Clinton's wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, to become secretary of state.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Australian government's overseas aid program and a Dominican Republic government agency that fights AIDS each gave between $10 million and $25 million to the William J. Clinton Foundation, which funds efforts to reduce poverty and improve global health. The nonprofit organization also financed the former president's library in Little Rock, Ark.

Norway gave between $5 million and $10 million, while Brunei, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar each gave between $1 million and $5 million. The Jamaican and Italian governments each donated between $50,000 and $100,000, according to the foundation's donor list.

The public disclosures provide the clearest sign yet of Clinton's extensive international fundraising and charitable efforts since leaving the White House in 2001. His foundation has no legal requirement to identify its contributors, but the former president agreed to make the names public to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest should his wife be confirmed as the top diplomat in the Obama administration.

Nearly 90 percent of the Clinton Foundation's gifts are valued at $250 or below, with 12,000 people giving $10 or less. The median gift amount is $45.

"I want to personally express my deepest appreciation to our many contributors, who remain steadfast partners in our work to impact the lives of so many around the world in measurable and meaningful ways," Clinton said in a statement. "We have just begun and it is an honor and privilege to be on this journey alongside each and every person who is committed to our foundation's ongoing charitable mission."

The Clinton Foundation did not release specific details for each gift -- neither the exact amount nor the date of gift -- but classified donors by range of amount.

The largest donations, more than $25 million each, came from two donors: the London-based Children's Investment Fund Foundation and UNITAID, an international drug purchase organization that provides care for AIDS and malaria patients and was formed by Brazil, Britain, Chile, France and Norway.

Other noteworthy donors include: Los Angeles entertainment producer Stephen L. Bing, who gave between $10 million and $15 million, and actress Barbra Streisand's charitable foundation, which gave between $1 million and $5 million.

I would like to know if Marc Rich or any other recipient of a pardon from President Clinton donated money to his foundation?

I don't support Clinton... but are you raking him because you couldn't blow and be blown as you see fit?

Well, Serprise-Serprise-Serprise! :-o

Not!

Except maybe for a few Million Dimocrats! :-/

For the PINO Obasama, the Urban Areas.

For their Majesties Billary;

The World!

After all, the Quislings were properly paid for! ;~)

Meanwhile, I am utterly destroyed over a lousy couple of $Thousand!

Just think, if I was an Iraqi, all I would have to do is Lie about not wanting to kill any Americans, and all MY Financial problems would be solved!

Revolution?

I don't think the negative spin is added by people against the Clinton's. The negative comes when any article has the Clinton name in it. Bill is a lying north end of a south bound mule. Simple, proven. Yet when in office he prosecuted military men for fraternizing and destroyed lives, families and careers. When it was time for him to 'cowboy up' and act like a man, he couldn't do anything but point his finger and lie!

The Governor of Illinois is looking like small potatoes. This does not mention the hefty speaking fees that other countries gave him nor does it mention how much Bill's foundation pays Bill for his services. It also doesn’t mention where the foundations and individuals that donated got the money to donate.

If you follow the money, you begin to see why some legislation was passed and trade agreements issued.

Clinton has raised US $ 492 million,(upto last year) for his charitable foundation. He recieved donations and GIFTS from different Governments/Foundations/Organisations/ Billionaires/businessman from different parts of the world. Also recieved donation from US Islamic Conference based in US and UN Foundation. Many businessman from India,Ukraine, Middle East countries donated and many people on Forbe's list also.
So far so good, Clinton Foundation has embarked on a very good real cause.
Now Clinton Foundation must submit the list of organisations/charitable institutions where they have contributed money and the projects which they are implementing in different parts of the world.
What cotribution has been done for the homeless/needy Amercan people ? The Foundation should take care of their own people also.
Hillary Clinton, as future top diplomat of this country, will have to think twice before giving policy decisions, as per the instructions of President-elect Obama. She has to ignore which individual/Government has donated to her husband's foundation. But can she do it ? Her future activity will reflect it.
Can Clinton Foundation let us know How much Mr.Bill and Hillary Clinton, have themselves contributed ? We know that charity starts from home.

Why is this news? Because while Saudi Arabia was giving money to slick Willie, Bin Laden and the boys were training in Saudi Arabia and then, slick Billery did NOT go after Bin Laden after they attacked the WTC the first time. Maybe Billery was bought off.

Posted by: virgin12 | December 18, 2008 2:37 PM

why the heck is 44 putting Hillary in-charge of State Dept. with this baggage of her husband? She is no foreign policy expert either and is a lightweight in the global arena. A serious lack of judgement in my view.

Posted by: sanj49 | December 18, 2008 2:34 PM

Why is this news? Seriously, I don't understand why this merits even a passing mention, let alone top billing on the website. So the Clinton Foundation accepted millions of dollars from overseas contributors -- so what? He's not the president anymore, he's doing work around the globe, and last I checked the governments of Norway and Australia, to take two examples from this article, are on our side. Why is this worthy of mention?

"What a bogus rumor from an ignorant Christian-phobe. In the midst of 9/11 the LAST thing the SA was concerned about was asking people's sex status before helping them. By the way, the christian principles are that EVERYONE is sinful, NO person is worthy to approach God, but we ALL can through the perfect sacrifice made by Jesus on behalf of all mankind. The SA is one of the few christian groups actually living out their beliefs by committing to a life of seritude to others, regardless of their beliefs or makeup. and WHAT is your big reoccupation with sexual orientation? Why does EVERYONE have to embrace the homosexual lifestyle or be labeled a homophobe? Just because Christians want to adhere to the belief that God has prohibited same-sex sex doesn't mean they HATE people who do. It just means they believe God has called them to set themselves apart by not engaging in those actions. It seems like some people just won't stop until everyone has been forcefully pressured to enlist in the gay pride parade. Believe what you want but don't belittle others because they dont wholeheartedly endorse your personal lifestyle. Talk about CLOSE minded!!!!!"

To respond: I heard it directly from the people that were turned away, who then had to seek help elsewhere; I'm not a christian-phobe - I'm a descrimination-phobe, injustice-phobe;(nor am I ignorant, thanks) I was responding to the "only ligitimate charity", which is a load of BS, there are plenty of ligitimate charities; I don't care of anyone's sexuality, nor do I nor any gays/lesbians want any non-gays to be 'converted' or what have you; I don't care what the christian motto, etc is, it's how actions are taken; Everthing else is about 1 thing: EQUALITY. Like it or not, a redneck in Arkansas has the same rights as a gay liberal in NYC, as have the same rights as the most conservative religious person anyone can find. Gays/lesbians are not afforded the same and equal rights as straights in the USA. That is crystal clear, and it is unfair. The SA is not the panacea of charities you make it out to be.

By the way, notice I didn't insult anyone directly the way you did.("..and ignorant...") Following those christian principles are we?

In any case, Happy Holidays!

Those who defend Bill Clinton may want to look at a couple of executive orders he signed. At the start of his administration he signed an order banning all administration officials from lobbying foreign governments ostensibly to prevent even the appearance of corruption.
At the end of his administration he lifted that order - how odd, just about the time he was going to the private sector and needed to make a fortune lobbying foreign governments. Oh, I am sure it was just a coincidence.

Snd, don't forget the all American con artists and treasonous swine like Bill Gates! How can Bill Clinton accept money from a piece of scum that advocated the firing of more than 3 million American workers and replacing them with cheap indentured servants from India? Bill Gates belongs in a prison cell next to Madoff and the other corrupt swine that has run this country into the ground.

Posted by: mibrooks27 | December 18, 2008 2:14 PM

Some see Bill as one person put it, should be in jail for lying but that person ok with Bush lying, killing 1 million Iraqis and sending over 4000 plus soldiers to die based on lies.

Bill's charity is just that charity. Americans had no problem with having a Saudi in the White House or given millions to Bush's campaing. Daddy Bush has been and still is working with the Saudis. Cheney has been working with the Saudi's and Iran since 2000, not a word from the Media or Americans. The Saudis have major shares in Citi Group and own a big hotel in New York. The Saudis have been giving George W. Bush money for years with his failed oil projects.
Are Americans so that dumb or what? You don't like Hillary or Bill find but ask the people who were victims of Katrina who came to help not President Bush but Bill Clinton. No wonder it was so easy for Bush/Cheney to destroy the US as Americans just followed like sheep and the Media got paid to spread the propaganda.
At lease the Chinese are smart as Bush/Cheney borrowed over 500,000 billion dollars and now the Chinese have a bank in the US thanks to Hank. Generatiions will ask why current Americans were so blind and why they were so stupid, the answer will be in the low education status records and how US Media was paid by a corrupt Administration to lie.

The Clinton Foundation has done some wonderful things all over the world. Everyone should be thankful he is doing the job that other leaders, including our own, of these countries should be doing to help stop poverty, sickness and helping environmental problems. Just couldn't help yourself but to put some negative twist to the Clintons AGAIN...geez can anybody find anything else to write about?

I did not know that the SA denied gays during the 9-11 thing.
Okay, the SA sucks, too.

Posted by: maphound | December 18, 2008 1:55 PM

I still do not understand how Hillary Clinton can get a security clearance with Bill as a man who admitted to lying to Congress. For an enlisted person in the military that husband/wife relationship would bar even a Secret clearance. ...I also noted that "The largest donations, more than $25 million each, came from two donors: the London-based Children's Investment Fund Foundation and UNITAID, an international drug purchase organization that provides care for AIDS and malaria patients and was formed by Brazil, Britain, Chile, France and Norway." That seems like a lot of money for a charity to give away????

Bill & Hillary Clinton are two of the sleaziest slime balls our nation has ever had to endure. Like George & Dick, they belong in prison, not in our government.

Posted by: norcalworm | December 18, 2008 1:49 PM

the Clintons are an oddity of 21st century Western Civilization - corrupt and extremely wealthy socialists

is there any real question they stole the tableware from the White House ?

I can already hear the denial: "WE DID NOT STEAL THE PLATES AND DISHES ! WE DID NOT ! " wagging finger at camera

now Hillary can go in and get some more dishes and things like that from the State Department pantry

Posted by: snorfy | December 18, 2008 1:42 PM

I don't care WHO is donating to a foundation focused on reducing world hunger and poverty. The person starving surely doesn't ask who paid for the food keeping them alive...

Posted by: DROSE1 | December 18, 2008 1:38 PM

I'm glad this information is now public. If it prevents Hillary Clinton from being SOS, or is used to cause controversy for the new administration it would be a real loss for the world community. I think Bill Clinton has already committed to full disclosure on future CGI and foundation ties but he could add a major network interview to answer whatever questions arise before Clinton's nomination hearings.

When is Daschle going to have his lobbyist wife release a list of her clients? When is Bower going to have her lobbyist husband release a list of his clients? CHANGE must mean that Obaby's cabinet must have spouses who are lobbyists. Obaby has hit a new height in hypocrisy. Clinton did more in one month than the snake oil salesman will do in his ONE term.

As a small donor to the foundation, I believe that the Obama team and Clinton haters wanted to have the list of donors made public so they might also approach us for funds. Sorry folks, I choose the organizations I support very carefully to ensure that my limited funds will do the most good to help relieve human suffering and upgrade human lives. The Clinton Foundation meets my conditions.

Bill has always sold what wasn't his (our Defense) and took what wasn't his(the White House silverware,Monica's youth, etc....)
The rich will get richer, get used to it.

I feel sorry for anyone who voted for Obama and thought they were getting "change".

This is another symptom of the 2 party system. When you have your government controlled by 2 parties, you ALWAYS end up making a choice between bad and worse.

Now Obama is getting ready to re-establish the Democrat establishment. Notice that he's got ZERO progressives in his cabinet. He has none of the 3rd party presidential candidates, Nader, Paul, McKinney. Or Matt Gonzales. These are all people who are "vetted" and expert and yet he totally ignores them and even puts REPUBLICANS on his cabinet.

Change, yeah. Here's your change... the center of corruption has moved from Texas to Chicago.

Have they payed up after receiving all of the US missle technology during Bill Clinton's Tenure?

thebobbob Wrote: "They are for the common man whose voice could not be heard any other means". No they are for their own power and monetary gain. I would like to see how many of the "contributions" from idiots, to these people that actually get to the people, and what percentage are held as Administrative Costs by the Clintons. People can give to charities that are not related to Political Power Grabbers. If you are interested in helping people how about donating to your local church's, Salvation Army, or your local food banks. Obama's and Clintons need your money to line their own pockets, and promote their own megalomania.

What is the problem? As long as the money is going to help those it was intended for, who cares who gave?
It's not like this is an isolated event. There is back rubbing all over the "charitable foundation" world...
It seems the only people who have a problem with it are people who have some sort of agenda against the Clintons.

OOps Sorry, accidently pushed the submit button.

I will never understand how Obama could appoint HRC as SoS. As a lifelong dem, I did not vote for WJC in either election. Didn't like them then and still don't. But I have faith in Obama and therefore, will wait to see what transpires. I see WJC as making lots of 'personal' money from his foundation [despite the good it apparently does throughout the world], and for that reason, it's difficult for me to have good feelings toward either of the Clintons.

Article contains some examples of how corrupt those in government can be. And not just in the USA. Sadly these government mandarins take monies from families and then wastefully use for political pals and cronies. GOVERNMENT IN ACTION!!

The Wash Post is like most in government in that they've never met a tax, a regulation or the addition of yet another bureaucrat they didn't embrace.

What's interesting is that the Wash Post has turned on the Clintons. When in the White House the E.J. Dionnes and others 'jock sniffed' as if they were talking about some thicklipped thickheaded NBAer. But Wash Post has got a new socialist on the block: Obama to slobber over.

Not the large contributions from Norway and Australia. These are countries which have been very active in the anti-AIDS work globally. They got a lot for their money. Clinton and his foundation were successful to negotiate huge price reductions in anti-retrovirals for African patients, saving billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of lives as a result. That was a pretty good investment from those countries. I wish the Clinton Foundation could be put in charge of negotiating pharmaceutical prices for the Medicare program as well... then maybe we wouldn't have to hear all those dire warnings that it will bankrupt the Government soon.

Maybe the "...even Saudi Arabia" (contributed) dig was just that...a dig at Clinton for getting money from that nation.

But isn't it good that Saudi money went to the Clinton Foundation, to support peace, rather than to the bin Laden Foundation, to promote terror?

So why not rephrase it to: "...including Saudi Arabia"?

What this writer's beef?
Clinton has been the most successful Ex-President since 1776. He has done more good to the poor, weak, sick and under privilaged than any president in power and out of power, anywhere on earth. Look it up. No one should put a stumnling block to the Clinoton's fund raising. No one.

Making the fund-raising by Clinton Initiative look like a crime is absurd. First ask yourself, Where did he spend the funds he raised? In his AIDS initiatives and of course his library. So what is wrong with that?

Lay off of the Clintons' they are among the best things that has even happened to this country despite your extremist far right hate and vengence. Let go of the anger and malice and embrace the Clinton's progressive, social justice, fairness and equity agenda. They are for the common man whose voice could not be heard any other means.

Lastly, President Clinton should not stop raising money for the poor in Africa, Latin America or South Asia simply because Hillary is meeting with heads of states. Hillary can still meet all the government and the Clinoton's philanthropic initiative can go hand in hand. No one should sacrifice the common good over bureacratice nonesense.

Most of the people that depends on the Cliniton Initiatives, have no other means of getting similar help, so let us not steal from the poor to satisfy the far right lunatics in our nation.

Enough of the Clinton bashing. They have done more good than any president dead or alive, period.
