A Well-Timed Arrest
By Garance Franke-Ruta
The arrest of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich yesterday on conspiracy and bribery charges, including an attempt to sell the Senate seat until recently held by Barack Obama, may have come at an awkward time for the president-elect, but it was well-timed in one other regard.
Dec. 9 is, by resolution 58/4 of the General Assembly of the United Nations on Oct. 31, 2003, International Anti-Corruption Day.
The day was so designated, according to a UN website, "in order to raise awareness of corruption and of the role of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in combating and preventing it."

It's also the day Gov. Blagojevich signed the State Officials and Employees Ethics Act.
