Barney Cam Returns

By Dan Eggen
It's that time of year again at the White House -- a national Christmas tree on the Ellipse, nonstop holiday events, and another corny video featuring Barney the first dog.

The seventh and final installment of "Barney Cam" was unveiled today, bringing a close to an annual tradition in which President Bush's Scottish Terrier frolics with celebrities in a lighthearted video message. The video is available on the White House Web site.

The White House has put together the "Barney Cam" videos each year since 2002, when the first version garnered some 24 million views on YouTube. Subsequent holiday messages have included appearances by former British prime minister Tony Blair, country singer Dolly Parton and others.

This year's video features cameos by Olympic gold medalists Michael Phelps and Nastia Liukin, along with Bush; first lady Laura Bush; first daughters Barbara and Jenna; and Jenna's new husband, Henry Hager. The Bushes' second dog, Miss Beazley, also makes an appearance, though the star of the show is clearly Barney.

The plot is loose, to the say the least, but seems to involve Barney dreaming of Olympic glory while putting together this year's "Red, White and Blue Christmas" theme at the White House. At one point, President Bush is shown addressing Barney as he slumbers. "You better wake up fella," Bush says. "There's a lot of work to do around here. We're sprintin' to the finish, not nappin' to the finish."

The newest installment makes no mention of another famous Barney video a month ago, which showed the cantankerous pooch biting a reporter who attempted to pet him. There's also no word on whether President-elect Barack Obama will continue the doggy-cam tradition. Obama has pledged to fulfill a promise to his daughters to get a family dog after moving into the White House on Jan. 20.

Was anticipating something else when a Bush daughter declares it's the time "when Barney decorates the whole house for the holidays..." Too bad, It would have made for a more dramatic video.

gosh... I for one "hate" all this corny crap. Like the Clinton's and Sox... it's just something for the 'tards among us. After the Clinton's moved out... what happened to Sox? It ended up with the negro responsible for feeding and caring for the animal... and that sure did not include any of the calculating Clinton's.

You do realize it's against federal law to threaten the President of the United States, right?

Oh, a shoe was tossed? What this MOFO needs is a bullet between his beady little eyes!

Sheesh! That video is tantamount to animal cruelty. No wonder poor Barney bites people. ... He thinks anyone with a camera and a mic is going to put him in another horrificly lame video. Barney and Miss Beasley may be the only ones from the Bush family that I will genuinely miss come January 21!

This is horribly stiff and unfunny. I'm glad this is the first and only time I've seen something like this. As much as I love animals, I'm not looking forward to any further WH exploitation of pets.

Dear Santa,

For Xmas this year, I would love to punt that ugly vicious runt. Short of that, I pray it develops a chronic farting disorder.

OK, the doggie's cute, and I really bear the Bushes no ill will (he's blindingly incompetent, but he's not the first to get in way over his head). But Jeez, that was excruciating. The telemarketer call that interrupted this for me was a relief by comparison.

That's funny the dog gets a higher scores than the President. How fitting!

I'm going to miss these corny videos. No doubt, the Obama administration will have its Hollywood friends produce theirs, which will take all the fun out of it.

Hopefully, Barney can bite a few more of the White House Press Corps before he leaves ; )
