Choice to Head VA Coming Sunday in Chicago

By Philip Rucker
President-elect Barack Obama will announce his nominee to head the Department of Veterans Affairs tomorrow at a news conference in Chicago, according to a Democratic source. Obama also plans to use the news conference to commemorate the anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor

It was unclear this afternoon who Obama would announce as his choice for secretary of veterans affairs. Other sources said the leading candidates were Rick Noriega, a Texas state representative who served in the Texas Army National Guard and ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate this year, and Marshall Carter, a decorated Vietnam veteran and banker who is chairman of the New York Stock Exchange Group.

Several others have been under consideration for the post, including Tammy Duckworth, a disabled Iraq veteran who leads the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs; former senator Max Cleland of Georgia, a disabled Vietnam veteran who was secretary of veterans affairs under President Jimmy Carter; and Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, an Iraq veteran.

The news conference is set for 2 p.m. Eastern time tomorrow, during which the president-elect will also highlight the contributions of those who have served the nation in the military, Obama aides say.

And NBC confirmed Obama's choice is Gen. Shinseki -- in fact, they showed the clip of Obama himself telling Tom Brokaw in the Meet the Press interview to be aired tomorrow that Shinseki is the right man to look out for our veterans. Don Lemon on CNN announced this evening that the VA Secretary pick is thought to be Gen. Eric Shinseki (Ret). Remember him? Gen. Shinseki is the one whom former Defense Secretary Rumsfeld showed the door when Gen. Shinseki told him what Rumsfeld didn't want to hear about troop levels needed for Iraq.

If Gen. Shinseki is the designate for Secretary of Veteran Affairs, President-Elect Obama has a winner here. Gen. Shinseki will (and has already proven) to be a person who will tell it like it is -- not a yes-man who dishes it the way you want to hear it.

You betcha!
