Pro-Palestinian Activists Picket Obama Compound in Hawaii

By Philip Rucker
HONOLULU -- It's a far cry from Cindy Sheehan's tent city near President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Tex., but a half-dozen pro-Palestinian activists demonstrated Tuesday morning outside the Kailua compound where President-elect Barack Obama is vacationing with family and friends.

Holding signs urging Obama to take a new approach to Middle East policy, the protesters gathered early in the morning just beyond the security perimeter of Obama's estate, hoping the president-elect would see them when he left for his traditional morning workout. But as of 9:20 a.m. Hawaii time, Obama had not left his residence.

It was the first time protesters had gathered outside Obama's vacation home during this trip. The activists represented several groups, including Veterans for Peace. They told a pool of reporters traveling with Obama that they want the incoming administration to make a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian territories a top priority, especially given the current strife in the Gaza Strip.

Ann Wright, 62, a retired Army colonel from Honolulu, wore a T-shirt that read, "We will not be silent." She carried a sign that said: "Change U.S. foreign policy. Yes we can."

"We feel there's a great need for change," another activist, Margaret Brown, 66, of Honolulu, told the Associated Press. "We need to stop giving Israel a blank check to do what it's doing. ... We just gave them a blank check to oppress the Palestinians, and this is the result."

The protesters said they planned to demonstrate later Tuesday at a federal building in downtown Honolulu, about 15 miles from the remote Kailua enclave where Obama is staying.

When asked about the demonstrations, Obama's chief national security spokesperson, Brooke Anderson, said, "The president-elect values citizen participation in our nation's foreign policy, but there is one president at a time, and we intend to respect that."

I'm not big on Israeli aggressiveness or on how they have been emulating those thatt have oppressed them in the past- BUT!

One side favors using weapons like women and even children strapped to bombs, to kill other women and children. One side wants to absolutely, resolutely eliminate a nation and a people from the earth; one side was dancing and cheering in the streets as police officers, airline crews, firefighters, and office workers were burned and crushed alive in the twin towers. One side subscribes to a religion that is pervasively represented by clerics that encourages beheading, eternal revenge at any cost, the relegation of anyone with female gentalia to inferior social and legal status; one side labels anyone that doesn't share their beliefs as infidels worthy only of death. And one side decided they would continue to ineffectually use violence (rockets) to force a military giant to make concessions.

Ghandi brought the British to their knees and forced them to relinquish their hold on his country- but it wasn't through any of these methods.

Israeli's claim for peace sounds hollow in this regards peace on what terms? Peace so that Israel can continue to hang onto the
"occupapied territories? Peace so that the lands that the rest of world consider illegal should continue to be oppressed Israeli rule? Peace so that Israel can continue to build Jewish settlements on the "occupied territories" while 40% of the Arab lands have already been illegally seized and thousands of Arab homes torn down? Is this what Israel means by peace? This is a claim to legitimize and illigal foreign occupation of Israelis.

There is a reason the lands are called "occupied territores" Israelis are not the legal lands of Israel, they are presently illigal occupied with help of United States.

There is no justification for punishing 1.5 million in the Gaza, disproportionate use of force.

This is the highest level of Palestinian factalities and casualties in four decades of Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This is the crime against humanity.

This happened under the watch of President Bush because he supported this attacks, Israelis has taken full advantage of it at the last moment. Because President Barack Obama would not have supported this attacks. This attacks is taking place in Gaza, a very small place which allows the Palestinians nowhere to run or hide. Gaza is called the world's largest prison and Israelis is using its American made airplanes, bulldozers, and the most modern, sophiscated American made weapons to kill Palestinians.

There is also another Super power which called Almighty God, he will bring justice sooner or later.!!!!

Israel doesn't have the right to exist as an ethnocracy (giving rights and priveleges of a select blood line and religion)

and call it itself a "democracy" and be part of the family of free nations. It is an ethnic oligarchy and must someday become a true secular democracy and stop living by the rules of mythology and thunderbolt "god"

"Self defense or genocide?"

GENOCIDE for land/water

Israel should be held accountable for the killing and wounding of the innocent civilian population in Gaza, including women and children, as a result of its massive missile attacks and heavy artillery fire.

Israeli actions have caused untold suffering to the Palestinian people, flagrantly violating norms of international law.

Israeli bombs are bound to spur further hatred, violence and mistrust.

The tight blockade of the Gaza Strip for the past year has already caused a humanitarian catastrophe, as well as a heightened sense of anxiety, fear and despair among the Palestinian population.

Israel should cease fire immediately, and open the Gaza border crossings to allow in emergency medical aid and other vital supplies to those in desperate need.

STOP the GENOCIDE

Hamas was elected? So the GOVERNMENT sends rockets and doesn't expect a response. Maybe the redneck in 2001 who said the Israelis ought to turn the Middle East into a parking lot wasn't so far off.

Though not Jewish I have instinctively been a supporter of Israel (even when defending themselves disproportionately) & I always will be! Why? Because it is a nation formed by survivors of the most appalling massacre/genocide in world history for which global anti-semitic tendencies -not Nazi-Germany alone-was responsible or complicit! So--will some one PLEASE explain to me WHY it is SO wrong in so many eyes for us to side more obviously with those whose entire destruction is demanded daily by its enemies? How can you not side with a land & its poeple that has been surrounded & beseiged by hate-mongers who promise nothing but to destroy the country & its people. So what if land has been annexed as a buffer to terror? In 1918 for example, France was allowed to occupy the entire Rhineland area of Germany not only as compensation but as a buffer against German aggression. When weak-kneed useless opposition to Hitler allowed him to march in & retake it with little more than horse cavalry, the entire world soon found itself force-marched full tilt into the greatest conflagration of war, hate & murder the world has seen.
What I draw from that is this - peace will come ONLY when militants living outside Israel's present borders & the trouble-makers who support & arm them, cease attempting its destruction & sign a permanent cease-fire (of the kind that recently allowed for peace in N.Ireland & the disbanding of the I.R.A)only then will some form of land agreement be possible.

It is so sad to see the hatred still continue. I guess we can't solve other country's wars until we solve our own. It has been less than 100 years Americans ignored our own genecide.

We do need a new foreign policy with the middle east. If Obama will ignor the lobbyist and New york and Florida Jews, we might get peace. At least if we can't negotiate peace, we can stop giving arms and money to Isreal. We can develop our own inteligence. At least we can say that the inteligence we got regarding Iraq was worthless, so what are we paying for? Is the inteligence any good when those who give it want us to fight their battles? I am so broke, my country is in economic disaster and we need our money. We can't give anymore. We have been giving since 1947 when Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin gave the Palistanian land to the Jewish refugees because of the prejudist in those three countries would not admit them. For all of the evangelicals who believe that we must support Isreal because they are God's chosen people; what happened to that part of the Bible that says you must believe in Jesus Christ? Maybe we should send missionaries to Isreal. I do not believe that my tax dollars should be used for killing; especially woman and children.
Obama must meet with both sides and keep a watchful eye on the Clinton's since they owe the Jewish people big time. It is believed that you can't win an election without the Jewish or Cuban America votes. I think it is time to Be a strong independent Nation and not have our foreign policies sold to the highest bidders. We must be fair for our own security.

we all need to know the truth... we're looking at this conflict as if it were between 2 armies with balanced forces?!! it's a hightech equipped army against civilians. while there were a couple of casualties in southern israel, we're looking at around 300 deaths and over 700 severely wounded on the palestinian side among which women and children...

Israel is conducting a massacre.... just take a look at some live information on this youtube link

http://www.youtube.com/aljazeeraenglish

and see a previous massacre by israel in 2006. This is the truth, just open your eyes and tell me what human logic can accept that?!

Good point from bosko2. Arab leaders throughout the middle east NEED the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. Without it, they would have no issue to deflect attention from their own failed regimes. If the US and Israel are the source of all the world's problems, then devastating unemployment in Cairo or Sana'a can't be the fault of Mubarak or Saleh.

Decry Israel and the United States all you like, but be fair and recognize that the perpetuation of this conflict has equally deep roots in the Arab world, too.

How can anyone expect peace in Gaza while Hamas has a role to play? This is not a chicken or the egg puzzle, folks. Gazans will have an opportunity to live in peace once they disenthrall themselves of that bunch of murderers who won't accept the reality of the state of Israel.

And just in case you missed it:

The protesters are doing the US a favor by alerting those who do not know the extent of how much US foreign policy is tilted to Israel.

Some people wonder if US policy is tithered to Israel wants more than it is intended to serve the US interests.

"most of the people of Gaza don't come from Gaza."

They don't come from Israel, either. Check your history. They are mainly Jordanians who moved into the area after the Roman diaspora of the Israelis in the 5th Century. "Palestine" existed only as a figment of the British Foreign Office until the Arab countries invented it as a propaganda tool following the War of Independence in 1948.

Why bombing Ashkelon is the most tragic irony

Tuesday, 30 December 2008

How easy it is to snap off the history of the Palestinians, to delete the narrative of their tragedy, to avoid a grotesque irony about Gaza which – in any other conflict – journalists would be writing about in their first reports: that the original, legal owners of the Israeli land on which Hamas rockets are detonating live in Gaza.

That is why Gaza exists: because the Palestinians who lived in Ashkelon and the fields around it – Askalaan in Arabic – were dispossessed from their lands in 1948 when Israel was created and ended up on the beaches of Gaza. They – or their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren – are among the one and a half million Palestinian refugees crammed into the cesspool of Gaza, 80 per cent of whose families once lived in what is now Israel. This, historically, is the real story: most of the people of Gaza don't come from Gaza.

Posted by: dogsbestfriend | December 30, 2008 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Unfortunately this is a prelude to an invasion.

The thing that I do not understand is why pro-Palestinians do not protest against Hamas. If their rockets stop so will the air attacks from Israel.

Since people are being killed on both sides of the border, both sides are to blame. This is not the time for laying blame, it is time to desist from violence, not by one side but by both.

Israel practices apartheid in Gaza, they have locked up 1,5 million people in a small area and control what they outside world is allowed to send them.

When these people become agitated they respond with overwhelming military force.

The United States and the rest of the world condemned these practices in South Africa and they should condemn them in Gaza.

"Ann Wright, 62, a retired Army colonel from Honolulu, wore a T-shirt that read, 'We will not be silent.' She carried a sign that said: 'Change U.S. foreign policy. Yes we can.'

'We feel there's a great need for change,' another activist, Margaret Brown, 66, of Honolulu, told the Associated Press. 'We need to stop giving Israel a blank check to do what it's doing. ... We just gave them a blank check to oppress the Palestinians, and this is the result.'"

Do a little research and you'll find out how many decades the Palestinians have been living in "camps", and then ask why none of their Arab brothers have taken them in, instead of just leaving them in situ to be used as political fodder in the eternal quest to push the Israelis into the sea.

Now, follow the money, the money that Arafat received to help his people.

How much of it do you think made it to the camps? Where is it now?

While I watch with great sadness the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza and hope to see a quick resolution to the conflict--sadly not likely--I do believe that Hamas and the Israeli government are to blame for the current situation. Picketing the Obama's only when israel tries to defend itself against projectiles from Gaza, does little but suggest to the Isaeli people and the American government that those who now protest do not value all equally. Peace will come to Israel and Palestine when America, Europe and Russia make clear to both parties that Peace--which includes the establishment of an independent Palestinian State--is the only option. However criticizing Israel for defending itself is absurd. Come on, if Mexico or Canada we lobbing rockets at the US we all know we would demand action and we would get it. Obama should not give Hamas any hope that it will be rewarded for violating Israel.

Self defense or genocide?

1) Israel controls the borders of Gaza and blockades shipments of food and medicine, so that the population does not have access to bread.

2) Then, Israel prevents foreign journalists and human rights witnesses from crossing the border into Gaza.

4) Next it begins a massive bombing campaign of one of the densest cities in the world. (1.5 million people live in Gaza).

This is just phase one they tell us.

What is phase two? Does it involve gas chambers?

Time for a new foreign policy.
