44 The Obama Presidency

White House Staff Starts to Settle In

By Anne E. Kornblut
About 15 Obama officials made their way into the White House on Tuesday -- and began answering phones, setting up computers and turning up the heating system.

Some substantive work was accomplished: chief of staff Rahm Emanuel signed an order authorized by Obama ordering all federal agencies to stop pending regulations until the new administration has time to review them. Bill Burton, a White House spokesman, said he did not expect much further activity from Obama on Tuesday night, when the president and his wife are planning to attend 10 inaugural balls.

In the meantime, more than a dozen Obama officials were getting set up and preparing for work on Wednesday. Burton even answered the phone in press office. A press schedule -- Obama's first as president -- is expected shortly.

Obama is not POTUS. The Presidential oath is explicitly prescribed in the Constitution, Article II, Section 1, which begins by saying the president "shall" take the oath "before he enter on the execution of his office."

44th President Barack Obama and the 1968 "Game of the Century"

On this day January 20, 2009 Barack Obama was sworn in as the first African American and 44th President of the United States.

41-years ago (1968) on this same day College Basketball would be put on the map forever when the #1 ranked UCLA Bruins would bring their 47-game win streak into the Houston Astrodome to play the #2 ranked Houston Cougars to determine who was the best team in the country.

This would be the first nationally televised college basketball game and would be known as the "Game of the Century".

The "Game of the Century" is ranked #11 on the list of the Top 100 Sports Moments of the 20th Century.

The Bruins (13-0) were led by Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) the best player in the country. UCLA was also the defending NCAA Champions.

Elvin Hayes and his #2 Cougars (14-0) were up to challenge and matched the Bruins basket for basket. Hayes was the best player on the court this night with Alcindor playing with an eye injury.

Hayes nicknamed the "Big E" scored 39 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, with 8 block shots. He blocked Alcindor's shot 3 times. Houston would beat UCLA 71-69 with Hayes hitting 2 free-throws with seconds remaining to secure the victory.

Hayes wore the #44 for Hosuton as Barack Obama a basketball fan himself becomes the 44th President of the United States.

10-years later (1978) Hayes would be a member of the Washington Bullets and win an NBA Championship.

Other notable basketball player legends to wear the #44:

Jerry West (NBA logo), Pistol Pete Maravich, Dan Issel (ABA/NBA legend), George "Ice Man" Gervin (ABA/NBA legend), David Thompson (1974 NCAA Champion), Derrick Coleman (NCAA and NBA star).

Basball Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Reggie Jackson, and Willie McCovey all wore the #44.

Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown, and Ernie Davis of Syracuse University the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy both wore the #44.

Congratulations to President Barack Obama America's 44th President.

Not enough, Congress must exercise their nuclear option, that allows President Obama abd the Congress to declare all regulations enacted during the past six months by the defunct bush junta to be null and void. The process of undoing the garbage bush and his croanies foisted on the american people via regulatory action would take years to undo. The nuclear option is more that justified and it must be implemented.

Dungarees posted, "It's a new administration; let's not take the tact of the Republican congressman who said the other day, 'I'm going to make things as hard as possible for him to do anything, I don't care what it is he's trying to do.'" I'd like to know who that congressman is. Do tell us, please. If it's true, it's disgusting.
Does anyone think that a person who would make that statement could be considered to be patriotic? Does he care about what is good for the country or is he a spoiled brat who will take his toys and go home when he doesn't get his way?

Every president suspends regulations, etc., pending a review; it's the norm. And, every Cabinet secretary will have on their desk, almost immediately, a list of all special positions, envoys, etc., that they must approve for them to continue, or disapprove and the special position will no longer be in effect. You'll see this at State, Defense, Treasury, etc.

We're already talking how he's spending American taxpayers' money? As if nothing was spent the last several years, as if the administration didn't believe in a bailout?

Give it a break already. The administration hasn't completed a day yet and people are complaining.

On a serious note, I already heard someone say that the inaugural address wasn't as good as Governor Palin's was, that they didn't trust "Obama because of all the things he's doing as president..." They added that they do trust Governor Palin who should have run with Senator McCain as VP in case anything happened to her.

It's a new administration; let's not take the tact of the Republican congressman who said the other day, "I'm going to make things as hard as possible for him to do anything, I don't care what it is he's trying to do."

secret treasure needs to tell us how he and his kind feel about the $5 trillion Bush borrowed for his tax cuts and the Iraq war. So far Obama hasn't spent anything because to date the budget was a Bushy vehicle.

I am so happy.

And that speech, in the most succinct and efficient of ways...spoken as a gentleman...summed up the past
8 years of insanity.

Why are we being directed here instead of the story about the Messiah trying to over-ride Regulations, as in: ALL Regulations!

Talk about a Brain-Fart!

THAT, is why the stocks have tanked since the Election!

Our Country's Economics are in the hands of a Constitutional Law Lawyer! :-(
