Foggy Bottom

Clinton Welcomed at State Department

By Glenn Kessler
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received a rousing welcome this morning when she arrived at Foggy Bottom for the first time, as cheering foreign service and civil service employees packed every inch of the C Street lobby, including the balcony overlooking the flags of foreign nations.

"Well, I am absolutely honored and thrilled beyond words," Clinton exclaimed. She was flanked by Steve Kashkett, the State Department representative for the foreign service union, and William Burns, the undersecretary of state for political affairs and the highest ranking career officer.

"So far, we are thrilled to have you here," Kashkett said, expressing hope that Clinton would make good on her promise to boost funding for the department.

Clinton told the staff that President Obama and Vice President Biden would be visiting the department this afternoon "to send a clear and unequivocal message that we are a team and you are a member of that team." She said the new administration would "not tolerate the divisiveness" that had hampered foreign policy in the Bush administration.

"Think outside the proverbial box," Clinton urged the employees. "There is nothing I welcome more than a good debate and the kind of dialogue that will make us better. ... We need a sense of openness and candor in the building."

Clinton said her tenure would be "a great adventure" but that the career staff should expect to work hard. Clinton, who also oversees the U.S. Agency for International Development, said there are "three legs to the stool of national security -- defense, diplomacy and development. We are responsible for two of three legs. ... Robust diplomacy and effective development are the best long term tools for securing America's future."

When Obama visits State, he is expected to announce the appointment of former Senate majority leader George Mitchell (D-Maine) as Middle East envoy and former U.N. ambassador Richard Holbrooke as special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

angriestdogintheworld -

You oughta get a TV show. If Colbert can make a gig out of parodying O'Reilly, you should be able to do the same for parodying a noisy but brain-dead right wing nut.

Reviewing the above rules for comments here I read: "User reviews and comments that include profanity or personal attacks or other inappropriate comments or material will be removed from the site."

That must not include the vulgarity, sexism, misogyny, and other attacks on our new secretary of state.

The depravity of the commenters in question is revealed by their immature and vulgar remarks.

Personally, I'm more inclined to trust the judgment of President Obama who appointed HRC as Secretary of State, and the 92 out of 94 senators who approved her appointment than these mindlessly offensive commenters.

I do wish the Washington Post would stand by its rules on this message board, though.

She is only getting better.

hey, am I seeing things or has Hillary liked gained about 15 pounds???

Posted by: TheBabeNemo | January 22, 2009 5:21 PM

You should have voted for Ron Paul ; )

Posted by: JakeD | January 22, 2009 4:48 PM

YES I did Jake... but he lost me with Rodham Clinton as chief Diplomat (obliterate Iran... hard working white people... turning the Black church into Black Liberation Theology). Plus she is totally in the pocket of AIPAC. She and Dennis Ross will crash the boat spectacularly in Iran {hear me now believe me later}. We can not afford another war... but that won't stop AIPAC.

Obama has definitely started off on the right foot by his choice of secretary of state. Hillary is an intelligent, charismatic, eloquent woman. She's a shinning example to all women worldwide and a gift to the United States.

She's also beautiful. She seems to get more attractive as the years go by. Love that hair, love that smile, the brains, the whole package.

Good choice Obama!

SHAMELESS ROLAND BURRIS POLLUTES THE WHOLE SENATE !!!

SHAMELESS ROLAND BURRIS IS THE ONLY ONE BENEFITTED FROM ILLINOIS SCANDAL OF GOVERNOR ROD BLAGOJEVICH; AS A FORMER ATTORNEY GENERAL OF ILLINOIS, HE FAILED TO CLEAN UP HIS CORRUPT STATE GOVERNMENT; HE ATTEMPTED AND WAS REPEATEDLY DEFEATED FOR HIS RUNS FOR MAYOR OF CHICAGO AND GOVERNOR OF IILINOIS, AND HE WAS NEVER ON BLAGOJEVICH'S LIST OF U.S. SENATE CANDIDATES. IRRONICALLY ENOUGH, AS AN ADVOCATE FOR A NATIONAL HANGUN BAN, HE KEPT A HANDGUN IN HIS HOME AND "FORGOT" TO TURN IT INTO POLICE AS HE HAD URGED OTHERS TO DO.

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAPPY that THE BEST CANDIDATE IS IN THE OVAL OFFICE!!!

Hearing Clinton's welcoming speech to State Dept staff this morning on the radio (delivered in a flat monotone completely devoid of sincereity: I'm so happy to be here... (drone-drone-drone-drone-snore) reminds me of how unqualified she was for the presidency.

Hopefully she is better at Secretary of State than she was at campaigning for a job she was unqualified for.

...and for the misandrists reading this while complaining of a glass ceiling of their own minds... I suggest you put down the kool-aid and go smash through it on your own integrity, brains, and energy - like Obama did!

GO USA!

Good speech, Hillary !!!

As to the Middle East, remember the good guy -- bad guy approach that got US Hostages out of Iran when Reagan came into office, namely, you had better deal with Carter because you really don't want to deal with us [Reagan.]

Israel has just showed both Lebanon and Gaza that it means business, so the radicals had better like our approach, because if they don't, Israel will deal with it -- their way.

I am very happy for Hillary.

She is a lawyer. She was First Lady. She was a Senator. She moves with high powered people all over the world.

But not even Hillary can force a changed behavior in the Middle East. Keywords here are:
"recognize Israel".
Until the region does that, we will be at war with intermittent cease fires....
forever.

i just hope hillary doesn't SNAP AGAIN and start running around in circles butt naked except for a metal vegetable strainer on her head for a helmet showing;

"HELP! HELP!"

"SNIPERS ARE FIRING AT ME!"

"SNIPERS ARE FIRING AT ME!"

"SAME THE CHILDREN AND ME FIRST!"

"HELP! HELP!"

An "American Gestapo" has ruined untold thousands of lives, contributed to the decimation of the economy, and has TORTURED American citizens with radiation weaponry and devices that the government now confirms are being placed in the hands of local law enforcement nationwide.
----------
Oh, man, all I can see is Col Klink, but dumber.

And uglier.

And given Cheney's tenure, none too successful -- I hope they never try to take over the world, or anything.

Which begs the question: are ALL Nazis stupid cretins, or just ours?

Posted by: thegreatpotatospamof2003 | January 22, 2009 2:22 PM

Good luck, Hilly. 'Cause luck is the only tool you have.

----------
As opposed to you, right?

Posted by: thegreatpotatospamof2003 | January 22, 2009 2:16 PM

captainkona, must be nice to be POTUS of the sexist pig club.

Obama handling the "real issues" while HRC gives tea parties is a laugh. Obama appointed HRC because he knew foreign policy was his weak point and needed the best person in the country to handle it on his behalf. Grow up.

angriestdogintheworld:

Didn't you vote for Obama?!

Posted by: JakeD | January 22, 2009 1:54 PM

When the phone ring at 3am, Hillary will be the one to pick it up.

Posted by: jellybean1 | January 22, 2009 1:53 PM

what a joke...the most corrupt politico in the Senate and not one question about Wall Street, which tanked on her watch and representation. I think the jews that manipulated her and Shumer are now fat and happy and have 8 more years of settlements and War with Iran.

Posted by: angriestdogintheworld | January 22, 2009 1:47 PM

Hillary is such a spastic idiot. But hey, even Bosnia Betty could do better than Condi I suppose.

She'll keep Sarkosy, Putin and Merkle occupied with nice little tea parties while Obama handles the real issues himself.
SoS is a pretty heavy consolation prize though. Obama may one day regret not delegating her to the landscaping crew.

Good luck, Hilly. 'Cause luck is the only tool you have.

"radiation weaponry" LOL!

Posted by: JakeD | January 22, 2009 12:13 PM

WE INTERRUPT THIS THREAD WITH BREAKING NEWS THAT KEITH OLBERMANN HAS CONFIRMED, VIA A FORMER NSA OPERATIVE, THAT JOURNALISTS ARE AMONG 'TARGETED' GROUPS THAT HAVE BEEN SPIED UPON 24/7 BY A PERVASIVE GOVERNMENT 'PROGRAM'.

AS A FELLOW JOURNALIST/VICTIM, I TRIED TO TELL HIM THIS A YEAR OR SO AGO.

NOW HEAR THE REST OF THE STORY. IT'S WORSE THAN WATERGATE. MUCH, MUCH WORSE.

As I have written about in this space, it goes much, much further that just surveillance. An "American Gestapo" has ruined untold thousands of lives, contributed to the decimation of the economy, and has TORTURED American citizens with radiation weaponry and devices that the government now confirms are being placed in the hands of local law enforcement nationwide.

Keith, if you are reading this, please read the story linked below, updated last week but originally reported last July on my blog site.

Give me a call. I tried to tell you that day at 30 ROCK that you were a fellow victim. You wouldn't -- or couldn't? -- listen that day. Now read this:

http://my.nowpublic.com/world/gestapo-usa-govt-funded-vigilante-network-targets-terrorizes-u-s-citizens

OR (if link is corrupted):

And to Bob Woodward: Domestic torture via radiation weaponry makes what reportedly happened at Guantanamo seem almost quaint. Please see my story on same. People are beginning to talk about this.

Sen Mitchell and Mr. Holbrooke

Sorry to see old tired faces still rushing and dashing to no purpose.

Sen Mitchell proved greatness in Ireland, however he is way out of his league in the Middle East, so is Mr. Holbrooke

Peace between Israel and the Palestinians will be had only while using a huge stick.
there are no carrots left. Neither of these gentlemen is able to use threats as negotiations tool and yet it is the ONLY tool that ought to work with strong headed give no inch solitudes.
I hate to see another 8 years go to waste which will definetly cement the status quo of endless wars to eternity

Mr. Obama, Mrs. Clinton I dare you to prove me wrong

This is the best speech of her life. Why couldn't she speak this well while campaigning? I guess she needed the two years to practice.

"MOST IMPROVED" Yes, but from a very low bottom.

Posted by: citizenchick | January 22, 2009 11:38 AM

Hillary will do a great job, not only, but in part because the diplomatic corp love her. State got HRC because President Obama knows how important diplomacy is, not because he needed to keep her close. They share a mutual respect and love of our country. This is going to be an amazing ride!

Posted by: JoelB8 | January 22, 2009 11:33 AM

It is just so sad to see all those billions upon billions going to prop up the banks when just a fraction of that would have made such a difference to State and Development. Oh well, time to at least reverse the mindset that Dubya left behind.

"How will Hillary get along with the White House and will she be able to refrain from stepping on Obama's toes concerning reaction to foreign policy crises? ... "

--------------------------------------------

Ah, SHE works for HIM.

End of story. Nice try, though, pimping your blog with this post. Slef-impressed much ??

How will Hillary get along with the White House and will she be able to refrain from stepping on Obama's toes concerning reaction to foreign policy crises? These are Q's whose answers should be entertaining to watch play out.

My congratulations to Madam Secretary and all who will be under her watch.
Hopefully "State" will get the support and aid from the administration it needs and deserves.
They are understaffed, and underfunded. To renew our standing in the world,we must give the neccessary attention and support to this department of the US government.
