Three New Homeland Security Hires
By Spencer S. Hsu
President Obama announced his intention to nominate Jane Holl Lute as deputy secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, and DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano will bring two of her top aides from Arizona to serve as chiefs of staff for policy and operations.
Lute, 52, is the United Nations assistant secretary for peacebuilding support and served as director of European affairs on the National Security Council from 1991 to 1994 during the administrations of George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Before joining the U.N. in 2003, she was chief operating officer of the United Nations Foundation and the Better World Fund, headed the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflict and was a senior public policy fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, according to a U.N. biography.
Married with three children, Lute retired from an Army career in 1994, and earned a law degree from Georgetown University and doctorate degree in political science from Stanford University.
Napolitano, Arizona governor from 2003 until her Senate confirmation Tuesday, also announced that her gubernatorial deputy chief of staff, Noah Kroloff, would serve as her chief of staff for policy; and Jan Lesher, her former chief of staff and state commerce department director, would serve as chief of staff for operations.
Kroloff, a lawyer, was an economic development and policy adviser to the governor, while Lesher ran a public relations and consulting company before joining Napolitano's team.
"Jane's experience leading large operations with broad and challenging missions lends itself to the undertaking we have before us at Homeland Security," Napolitano said. "I look forward to working with these talented individuals as we work to further unify this department under our common mission."
