Obama Arrives in Chicago
By Philip Rucker
CHICAGO -- His batteries recharged after a two-week pre-inaugural vacation in Hawaii, President-elect Barack Obama is enjoying his last 48 hours in his home town here before moving to Washington, where he immediately will press congressional leaders on his economic stimulus plan and grapple with continuing strife in the Middle East.
Obama, his wife, Michelle, and their daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, arrived at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport early Friday morning from Hawaii, where they were vacationing. The Obamas are scheduled to fly to Washington on Sunday in time for the girls to start classes at Sidwell Friends School.
Obama resumed his old Chicago routine on Friday morning, venturing to a friend's high-rise apartment building for a workout. But for the Hawaii native who just spent 13 days sauntering around sunny Oahu island in shorts and sandals, the Windy City offered a rude awakening.
Bundled in winter coats, the Obamas stepped off their United Airlines charter plane about 12:40 a.m. onto a cold and windy tarmac. The temperature in Chicago Friday morning is about 25 degrees, with a wind chill of 14.
On the New Year's Day flight from Hawaii, Obama exchanged pleasantries with traveling journalists and joked that his wife and daughters weren't speaking to him because of the change in climate.
