Presidential Jet Wings Obama to Washington

Updated 7:36 p.m.

President-elect Barack Obama prepares to step aboard a military plane Sunday at Chicago's Midway Airport as he heads for Washington and his inauguration. (Reuters).

President-elect Barack Obama arrived at Andrews Air Force Base tonight, aboard a presidential aircraft for the first time as the principal passenger, as he moved to Washington from his home town of Chicago 16 days before being sworn into office.

After posing for pictures on the windy tarmac with the ground crew, Obama, wearing a navy suit, blue tie and black overcoat, boarded a Boeing 757 painted like Air Force One. This particular jet is frequently used to carry the vice president, first lady and other top officials.

Obama's motorcade ferried him from the Maryland Air Force base to the Hay-Adams Hotel in the District, where he is staying with his wife, Michelle, and two daughters.

Obama told reporters on the plane that he got emotional as he left his Chicago home this afternoon. "I choked up a little bit leaving the house today," Obama said. "What happened was Malia's friend had dropped off an album of the two of them together. They've been friends since preschool and I just looked through the pages and the house was empty. It was a little tough. It got me."

As he boarded the plane, Obama met with Col. Scott Turner, the aircraft commander who will pilot Air Force One for Obama once he takes office, and Reggie Dickson, chief flight attendant. Obama ordered a cheeseburger and french fries from Dickson, who joked with reporters that he prepared the burger "Air Force One-style."

Asked whether he was looking forward to moving to Washington, Obama said: "Yeah, although living in a hotel for two weeks, we kind of did that for two years."

Obama was joined on the plane by several of his top aides, including senior adviser David Axelrod and incoming press secretary Robert Gibbs.

As they boarded the presidential plane for the first time, Obama's transition staffers looked delighted at the fruit plates and baskets of candy on their seats. Although the plane was not officially designated Air Force One, flight stewards and ground staff wore jackets embroidered with the Air Force One logo, and presidential seals decorated the plane's interior.

The president-elect spent his last two days in Chicago working at his downtown transition office, getting his hair cut and packing for the move to Washington. Obama worked out this afternoon at a friend's high-rise apartment building along Lake Michigan before stopping at home on his way to Midway.

Michelle Obama and their girls, Malia and Sasha, arrived in the capital on Saturday night so they would have time to settle in before the girls begin classes Monday morning at Sidwell Friends School.

sandy5274 - you are not American - you are a domestic terrorist, and a proponent of hatred and worst of all very sad example of what we have to tolerate in this country. Barack Obama has been ELECTED by the United States of America and been recognized by the current president as his successor. Don't you want someone ready on day one??? Then give the man the supplies and access he needs prior to day one so everything goes as smoothly as true Americans know it will and impeachment??? Why not try to look at your current vice president Dick Cheney for lies and misappropriations - don't get lost in the devils mix while you're at it.
Fake Americans who do not love this country like 'JakeD,sandy5274, Darlene5280, Amy2009, Idiot-Hannity and Bill'o the Fool' are in for a best years of your life - you will realize that light dispells darkness and the greatness of this 44th president will outshine (as it did your candidate 'McShame') by simply doing the right thing - with style:) Soon you will be ignored completely and left to cry your tears of defeat in solitude with the other insignificants who's time has come and gone for good. God Bless America and God Bless our great 44th Presdient - We Honor You, Barack Hussein Obama.

"Sometimes the lack of intelligence on this board is simply overwhelming. Instead of spouting off to reveal your stupidity, why not check out the facts beforehand."

No kidding! but the spouting off has become reflexive, they'll spout off no matter what he does. I've seen some Bush Derangement Syndrome in the past 8 years but it's seldom as nuts as what we are already seeing from these pour souls afficted with the Obama version of it. They think the man is "arrogant" for following normal procedures. Fact is, they think he was "arrogant" for daring to be elected! By the time Barack Hussein Obama takes the Oath of Office, they will probably be foaming at the mouth and having fits!

Sometimes the lack of intelligence on this board is simply overwhelming. Instead of spouting off to reveal your stupidity, why not check out the facts beforehand. If you had done so, you would know that use of this transport to bring Obama to Washington was authorized by top echelon in the Air Force per standard procedure in dealing with President Elects about to become the President. If you so dislike Obama using this plane & believe it's grounds for impeachment or he should have paid for the use of this plane, I expect to immediately see similar posting re George Bush who was authorized to do the same thing. Also since Cheney used similar plane to fly around the country for his shooting and golf troops, he should also be impeached. But that most Americans believe Bush & Cheney should be impeached for impersonating a President & Vice President.

Okay so is there anyway we can bill the great Obama fraud for illegal use of Official US Government Transportation for
his own use,to fly Obama around like he has
already been sworn in as President? Oh well
the USAF has been known to screw up repeatedly as I recall a story about multi-million dollar drop in Executive Packages for Air Force Generals going into Air Farce
Cargo planes as well. Court-Martial the braindead USAF personnel that pulled this
latest FUBAR and Obama Snafu immediately.

Imagine also if something terrible happened to Obama (God forbid). I wonder if they would be (secretly) cheering. Some probably would be.

Oh well at least we won't have to look at that gaudy ridiculous Big O luxury jet that
Whacky Baracky Obama used during the campaign now that Obama can steal Air Force
Third for his personal transportation even
though Obama has not been sworn in as President yet. So is this the sign of more
things to come as His Total Arrogance Obama
thumbs his nose at the American people all
he wants to and WAPO and the MSM will still
swoon and moon and fawn over Obama?

i'm sure if mccain won, there would have been no problem with this.

i was hoping the sour grapes attitude would be done by now but i guess not.

the repugs had 8 years in office and due to the horrible job done the election was lost.

its not pres. elect Obama's fault the current administration messed everything up and wrecked the economy.

Okay so tell me is this kind of misuse of US Government Property like the Air Force 3
aircraft consistute grounds for Impeachment
of a so-called President Elect Barack Obama
now then? If not it should. You betcha I'm
sure Barack Hussein Obama and Joe Biden and
a whole bunch of Obama's Cabinet Members and White House Staff will go to jail long
before 2012. The Obama Banana Republic is
started to end before it even got started.

This certainly looks like misuse and total
misapproriation of US Government Property
by Private Citizen Barack Hussein Obama here, since Barack Hussein Obama has not even been sworn in as President of the US
yet now then...So why should all of us US
Tazpayers have to pay to fly Obama around
all over Hell anyhow before Jan 20 2009?
Bill Obama for It!..I bet Obama gets himself Impeached before 2012.

Hey wait a cotton picking minute here,so didn't the alledged President Elect and Fake Messiah Barack Hussein Obama tell us,
"There Can BE Only One President At A Time"
now then? ..So what the Hell is Obama doing
flying around in Air Force Three when he isn't even President yet now then? ..Who has the USAF Imbecile that authorized Obama the use of Official USAF Aircraft To
Cart Obama's stinking butt to Washington DC or anywhere else prior to Jan 20 2009?
The total arrogance of Barack Hussein Obama
never ceases to amaze me. God Save the USA.

Jake - you must be seriously bored during the off season for golf. I suggest bowling.

In the prior story, wasn't The One flying into Andrew's AFB?! Enquiring minds want to know. Seriously, we might as well just read People magazine instead. If Woodward can't do any more legitimate reporting, can the WaPo check if Bernstein is available for special assignment?

Does this at least make up for Blair House not being available until the 15th?

LOL! You mean "pResidential"?
