Obama Launches Stimulus Campaign on Hill

Speaker of the House Nacy Pelosi meets with President-elect Barack Obama. (Gerald Martineau/The Washington Post)

Updated 11: 38 a.m.
By Paul Kane
President-elect Barack Obama today kicked off his campaign to win approval of his economic stimulus plan, launching a series of face-to-face meetings on Capitol Hill to sell a plan that will now likely include $300 billion in tax cuts and another $500 billion, or more, in spending.

Obama, after a vacation in Hawaii and a final weekend in Chicago, headed to the Capitol this morning, where he held an 11 a.m. sitdown with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Neither the president-elect or the speaker took questions before the meeting, but each made some brief remarks.

"The reason we are here today is because the people can't wait. We have an extraordinary economic challenge ahead of us. We are expecting a sobering job report at the end of the week," Obama said at the start of the meeting, according to a pool report.

In the afternoon, Obama will convene a similar meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) before a large bipartisan gathering with Obama, Vice President-elect Joseph Biden, Pelosi, Reid and seven other congressional leaders inside the ornate Lyndon Baines Johnson Room off the floor of the Senate.

The afternoon meeting, which will be attended by four congressional GOP leaders, marks Obama's first sitdown with key Republicans since winning the election two months ago.

Searching for Republican votes, Obama's aides indicated Sunday that the still emerging plan would include at least $300 billion in tax cuts, including a $500 individual tax credit and a host of business credits. That's an increase of about $100 billion in tax cuts from the estimates aides provided during pre-Christmas negotiations among Obama's advisers and House and Senate Democrats.

Until today the sales pitch for the stimulus plan had been left to press conferences and radio addresses by Obama and congressional Democratic leaders, with their aides discreetly leaking details of the package they are assembling over the last 15 days. A few moderate Republicans and ranking minority members of key committees had been consulted over the phone by Biden or other advisers.

Now, Obama is fully engaging in the pitch, with a plan to do a series of high-profile events later this month to sell the public on the plan.

Obama arrived on time for his Pelosi meeting, prompting scores of tourists, tour guides and congressional staff to gather in the Capitol Rotunda hoping for a glimpse of the president-elect.

The two leaders took no questions.

I get tired of everyone always blaming Bush, Bush, Bush. What about all the others in congress who supported him throughout these years. This isn't a one man problem. As far as the mortgage industry. We are a "need to blame" country. No one every wants to accept responsibility for their own actions. Who's blaming the irresponsible borrowers who don't know how to live within their means? Now with Obama. Well, the rich get richer & the poor get more help. I'm so tired of all this government help that we as a country give out. Why not make people get off their butts & do something useful. Those who actually work & try to provide well for their families get punished by taking our money & givng it to those who want an easy way out. It's pretty sad when you go to the grocery store looking for what's on sale while the next person over is buying t-bone steaks w/their welfare card. We need to realign positions w/the welfare system & the amount of help we give to the lower income.

"It IS the Presidents SWORN Duty(Which occurs soon), to ENFORCE the Federal Laws!"
Posted by: SAINT---The | January 5, 2009 3:59 PM
--------------------------------------

To act as an aid, I have here, for all to examine, the "Presidents SWORN Duty."

From Article II of the Constitution:

"Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:

'I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.' "

The definition of "Executing the Office..." is found in section 2 of the same article. His duties are to act as commander in chief of the armed forces, make treaties, and to appoint ambassadors and other officers to their duties. His only Constitutional authority is to act as an administrator, ensuring that the federal government runs according to its framework, that being the Constitution itself. I've paraphrased, but you're free to look at it for yourself.

The operation of our government, including enforcement of law, lies in bodies OUTSIDE the Oval Office.

This is the woman who dared to take the most richly-deserved impeachment in our history "off the table."

obama said, "The reason we are here today is because the people can't wait."

yet...

according to the story, "Neither the president-elect or the speaker took questions before the meeting, but each made some brief remarks."

so....

i guess what obama was saying as he campaigned for the last two years was all bullsh*t.

he isn't making himself or his office more accessible to the people who elected him.. as we are seeing from this, OBAMA TALKS TO US.. BUT WE CAN'T TALK TO HIM.

gee. that sounds exactly like how george w. bush ran his presidency.

"CHANGE" ????

i don't think so... but then after you are elected president based on campaign lies.. (oops, i meant PROMISES), who's going to stop you from doing whatever the f* you want?

Ooh, tough chick Nancy Pelosi says, "we'll hit the ground running." Just like, after the Democrats won a majority a while back, she was going to enact a kick-butt, 5 day, 40 hour work week, for Congress. That lasted about 10 days. All we're getting is the political flip side of an Republican LP. What an insult.

Watch the Republicans try to short circuit the stimulus plan for ordinary people. After all, their rich CEO friends have already gotten theirs. Never forget that the rich got richer and the middle class became jobless under the Republican leadership of George W. Bush and six-years of Republican congresses.

Under Clinton the Democrats held both offices. When Bush won the Presidency the Democrats were still in charge of Congress. They kept control until 2002 then regained control in 2006. So how do you come up with your figures??? Typical DemocRAT. Lie, lie, lie. SAD. And to your believe that the Democrats will do anything for you. What have they done since winning. Now I think I get it. He is going to cut the taxes for us, what used to be called the middle class, in half in order for us to go out and once again "think" we have money to spend.

LOL if only this were a dream. This is even more stupider than the years when Sharon Pratt Kelly had the intentions of balancing the budget via parking tickets.

People to bottom line it from Richmond, Va all the way up the east coast to Nova Scotia Canada you will not see the light of day at the end of you mortgage payments because the price of houses is now out of reach of the everyday working stiff.

he answer to turning our economy around and avoiding a bad recession or maybe an depression is obvious.

1. Make e-verity mandatory & start enforcing our Immigration Laws and Border security.

Advantages:

1. Unemployment takes an Huge drop down when millions of Illegal Aliens go home!
2. Wages goes up when the slave labor subsidizes by tax payers is no longer available!
3. Tax receipts goes up by billions as the Huge underground economy goes above ground.
4. Welfare cost goes down by billions that is currently spend provide Medical, Education and welfare for the invading horde!
5. Hospitals & ER. return to profitably income goes up, costs goes down, care improves as workload decreases.
6.Business and profits expand & grow adding jobs and increasing wages as 40 billion dollars currently going out of country is spent on goods and services in this country!
7. Crime and the cost of Crime takes a Huge drop down.
8. Balance of payments improve as the cost to support 20 to 30 million illegal aliens goes away. I.E oil, electric. water, infrastructure, etc.
9. Pollination, congestion, environment makes Huge improvement.
10. Insurance rates drop across the board as tax payers no longer have to subsidize 10,s of millions illegal aliens. Medical, car insurance etc.
11. Document fraud, identify thief, etc. makes Huge decrease.
12. Over crowding of prisons and cost decrease by Huge amounts as the Illegal Aliens prisons population decrease!
13. Drug usage and the destroying of life that is ravaging our cities plus the millions of crimes and billions of dollars in cost will decrease as tighter borders will reduce the estimated 140 billion worth of drugs pouring across our open borders.
14. The pain and suffering of the estimated 48,000 thousands lives taken by Illegal Aliens since 9/11 and the 100,s of thousands of rapes, robbery etc. will go away.
15. Our schools will make Huge improvement in education or children & cost decrease as millions of none English speaking students that is costing billions and dummying the education of our children goes away and class size takes a huge drop.

This is just a few of the benefits anyone can think of many more. There is almost no down side. Although many will say costs will increase because of wage increases once the slave labor leaves business. But most of the wage savings were not passed on to consumers but was just increased profits for the businesses. Any profits decreases for businesses will more than be off sit by the simulating impact of more than 40 billions dollars on our economy and gains in productively will increase as higher skilled workers replace uneducated peons and businesses find labor saving devices, technology, machines etc. to replace labor shortages.

Poor People, good news. You will have an additional $500 to spend. Problem is, when it runs out you will still be poor. The Dems created this foreclosure mess. Luckily, 900K home only lost 15 percent of its value. End the Military spending in Iraq and do not give anymore loans to GM, Ford, etc. They are going to fail anyway.

Any success Obama has in bringing about America's economic recovery will further weaken chances for Republicans to regain power in Washington.
Republicans believe America's financial success is not in their best interests and they vow to do everything they can to prevent it.

Tax Cuts, Tax Rebates, and extended Un-Employment are all fine and dandy for People who are not needing or deserving said help.

Face it, extended un-employment for the third or fourth time, is a very bad joke! The BUMS need to get another job!

Tax Breaks mean someone has earned enough to have to owe taxes!

As a destroyed Sole-Proprietor, I did not owe taxes, or have the ability to collect un-Employment(As many who were "Marginally" Employed also cannot)!

What we need, is either Money(NOW), Opportunity(NOW), or someone to come by with a Pleasant Overdose to put us out of our misery!

Two things could provide immediate help for people like me.

First, a MASSIVE Screening of Workers for proof of ability to work(ID)-Heck, that alone could be several thousand new Jobs!
After the Employers get fined for every Un-Documented Worker $1,000, we'll see if those same Workers are "Employed" the next day, or, if Millions of Jobs magically re-appear for Legal Workers! ;~)

Second, $$$$$$$$. Money to pay my rent, insurance, and car payments! A little more for gas and food while I try to get productive instead of sitting Idle "Dying on the Vine"!

How? By going up-side down with the IRS!

Cashing out $5-10 Thousand now, WILL get recollected once I can be productive again-in Installments, and windfalls from Returns!

The People have not been helped at all yet, and we are HURTING BAD!

From where are the U.S. dollars coming to pay for President-elect Obama's tax cuts and stimulus plan? Already there is 'talk' and rumblings in European and Asian financial markets that the U.S. is fast approaching not having enough cash from declining tax revenues to pay for the interest on the trillions of U.S. public debt, much less pay on the principal, and still have enough cash to pay for essential federal government services. A point in time will be reached that the U.S. government will not be able to borrow more money to pay for borrowed money that is coming due because the U.S. will not have the money to pay the interest on the debt.

No fan of earmarks here.

And yet all this time and energy wasted in discussing earmarks is inversely proportional to the actual amounts involved.

See WSJ article on this....

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122273002386487923.html
(Pet Projects Make Up A Small Portion Of Federal Budget...

Earmarks, however, represent a small portion of federal spending ...

"They're a rounding error in the budget," said Robert Bixby of the Concord Coalition, which advocates for balanced federal budgets. )

All of pork-barrel projects (however disagreeable they may be to everyone!) together are less than 2% of the total Federal budget of more than $2 trillion!

We can see Sam Huntington was right in his book Clash of Civilizations if we will only look and be rational. But too many are not prepared for logic or rational discourse and resort to hurling racist insults. If we are realistic and look at the havoc caused by the millions invading Hispanics on our communities, culture, crime, economy, welfare and standard of living the only conclusion possible is that no Nation can withstand or assimilate Millions of citizens from another culture without changing to the very same type of culture and society the invading millions have created, built and sustained for 100,s of years and are now fleeing in their own Countries!

We really need the infrastructure and construction jobs so we can put the millions of Illegal Aliens back to work, so they can send money home to support Mexico! The contractors can charge the tax payers union scale, hire Illegals at slave wages, pocket the profits, and hit the tax payers for both their wages and the billions in cost to educate their many children, provide medical and welfare.

Sounds like the same old scam, reward the invading horde and soak the tax payers! You would think the Politicians would be content with just outsourcing all the jobs that are possible but No they want to bring in Slave labor ( while ignoring Article IV Section IV of our Constitution against invasion, the rule of Law, and their Oath of office) to take the jobs that cannot be outsourced! To add insult to injury they make the American citizens still working pay billions in extra taxes to educate, provide medical, welfare and jail cells for the invading horde that are taking our jobs and driving down our standard of living! While keeping busy Robbing, Raping and Killing American citizens at an rate that Ben Laden can only dream about!

But the Republicans love the slave labor for their Pay Masters in the Chamber of Commerce and business. The Democrats love the millions of Welfare votes. So there is little or no hope for American citizens and the future viability of this nation as we know it.

The future is an over populated, Spanish speaking third world Nation that is an Cesspool of Corruption, Crime, Poverty and Misery modeled on Mexico!

How many Americans know that Obama is dispatching VP-elect Joe Biden to Pakistan? yes to discuss among other things, USD 15Billion dollar aid package to that wretched terrorist country. And God knows why! They sent in their hoodlums who killed Americans the other day in Mumbai and now Joe wants to discuss aid package to them? What's wrong with us USA I wonder.

The fact that the leaders of congress are delaying the stimulus for another 6-weeks, rather than keeping to their plan to sign the stimulus bill on Oboma's first day, makes me suspecious that they are going to screw this aide up. Oboma is not in office yet and the congress is already flip-flopping and looking at their own agenda.

CHANGE? I doubt it.

Pass the Pork - payment of campaign debts and favors are due and payable - those who donated large should expect payment for those donations and those friendly to the administration should expect same favors.

THE AMERICAN PEOPLE NEED HELP. THERE SHOULD BE NO DOUBT IN THE ADMINISTRATION, ACROSS THE BOARD, THAT THE ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE SHOULD BE PASSED.

"THERE ARE MANY WHO ARE SOWING IN TEARS DUE TO THE RECESSION AND THE MAJOR DECLINE IN THE ECONOMY, LET THE PEOPLE REAP SOMETHING IN JOY".

Obama's excuse for not taking a position on the situation in Gaza is because "we have only one president at a time." Yet, he seems to have no problem with pushing his stimulus plan both to the American people and to Congress.

So tell us, Mr. Obama, whose side are you on? The Hamas terrorists who broke the cease-fire agreement and started flinging rockets into Israel? Or Israel, a democratic nation that is defending itself from attack?

"...now likely include $300 billion in tax cuts and another $500 billion, or more, in spending."

Increasing deficit spending by an additional $800 billion? Brilliant!

Brilliant!

This stimulus package is enough to move even the most sluggish Republicans, like those in the Senate.

as long as the help is up to down, nothing will help...
changes have to first happen at the worker and employer level like halting the h1b program, making changes to the procedures companies use to hire people...
credit checks are only necessary when people are handling money...
background checks can only be used if the crime comitted is less than 5 yesars old and the crime had no relation to the job being applied to...
no more secret databases used by h.r departments to blacklist people...
full disclosure, all the time...
