President-Elect Obama Calls Capt. Sullenberger
By Garance Franke-Ruta
Taking on the president's mantle of responsibility to thank Americans who perform extraordinary acts during moments of crisis, President-elect Barack Obama called Capt. Chesley Sullenberger III, the pilot of US Airways flight 1549, last night, according to incoming White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.
"The President-elect told Capt. Sullenberger how proud everyone was for the heroic and graceful job he had done in landing the damaged aircraft yesterday," said Gibbs in a statement. "The President-elect also thanked his crew and the many people on the scene in New York for ensuring the safety of everyone on board the plane."
The call lasted for five minutes, he added.
