Obama Makes Surprise Trip to Read to Children

Updated 3:44 p.m.
By Michael D. Shear and Hamil Harris
As a sense of crisis engulfed his White House Tuesday with the withdrawal of former senator Tom Daschle as HHS Secretary-nominee, President Obama made an unannounced trip to a school to read to kids.

His motorcade was seen heading north on 15th Street, and local sources soon reported he was at The Capital City Public Charter School. There was no mention of a trip on the schedule sent out to reporters the previous day.

At the school, the president and Michelle Obama read to a group of second-graders in the school library from a picture book entitled "The Moon over Star," an account of the first moon landing in July of 1969. An Associated Press report from the scene said that Obama told the students, "We were just tired of being in the White House."
Principal Janine Gomez said that she learned yesterday from the White House that the president would be coming to visit the school at 15th and Irving Streets NW. "I thought about all of  the struggles that my ancestors have gone through before we had equal rights," she said of his visit. "I saw two worlds coming together."
Obama was greeted at the front door of Capital City by 11-year-old Sam Sherman and 10-year-old Karen Tchemi of Northeast Washington. Said Sherman of the visit, "Words can't explain."
Tchemi, perhaps influenced by a recent fifth-grade lesson about voting rights in the District, said she used her conversation with the president to push the case for D.C. statehood. "I made the case to him for D.C. voting rights," she said.
"This is a moment that they will remember for the rest of their lives," said fifth-grade teacher Wanda Gregory, who had been teaching Tchemi about the District's plight.

Leensa Fufa, 27, a second-grade teacher at the school whose students were among the 25 who got a chance to listen to Obama read, said, "It was a great honor for the president and the first lady to take time out of their busy schedule to recognize the work that we do here."

In addition to reading to the second-graders, Obama walked through parts of the school that opened in 2000, according Karen Dresden, the head of the Capital City Public Charter School.

The only thing good about Barry-O is that he will fail so miserably that he will destroy his own socialist Dumbocrat party. Of course, he could go and run for president of his real homeland. . kenya.

" On a day when two of your senior management appointees imploded, you went for the bullet-proof photo op."
This is nothing compared to the last time a President read a book to a classroom full of children.

I don't think that Obama is friends with the Bush or Cheney families or any of the neo-cons who have so thoroughly destroyed this country on all levels.

But I DO know one thing...he wasn't reading "My Pet Goat"

No need to worry about me Dianne - perfect punctuation or not. A personal attack against me does nothing. Everyone just continues to laugh at you and your ridiculous posts. I'm very content and very happy with our First Lady. Hope Michelle LaVaughn Obama is sleeping well in the White House tonight. Please keep posting though; it's actually becoming very amusing.

Dianne, I'm sorry that you seem to be SO conflicted with Michelle Obama. It seems to me that you're just letting your own unhappiness project itself onto someone who you really know very little about. Anyways, your posts reek of ignorance and emphasize why it's important for people to get a GOOD education.

Some of you Demons would have something negative to say about Jesus Christ. Most of you are miserable and don't have a life, therefore you sit around trashing the President of the United States with your hateful racist comments. I hope all you mean spirited folks who have made negative racist comments burn in an eternal "HELL" of fire.

While 500,000 people continue to freeze in KY without food and his underperforming administration is exposed as tax cheats, influence peddlers, and myriad radical fundamentalists, Obama slinks off for a photo op. How nice.

At least he found an audience still willing to believe in fairytales.

Barry Hubris Obama is lucky that it wasn't my class. I would have told him to leave. What garbage! How about some respect for the time and effort that the poor teacher invested (and lost) in the lesson plan?

WHITEHOUSE UPDATE, Washington - Yesterday was Groundhog Day, and it has been reported that the nations newest prognosticator, Punxutawney 'Bama, saw his shadow, meaning we will have SIX MORE WEEKS of BAD CABINET CHOICES.

Now that's really smart politics Mr. President. On a day when two of your senior management appointees imploded, you went for the bullet-proof photo op. Good salvage job, indeed. Whoever recommended that should get be promoted to one of your open posts, say Performance Czar. Now, let's talk about your Treasury Secretary's tax hypocrisy. Okay, scratch that for the moment. Just tell us you'll exercise better judgement in filling out the rest of your most senior positions. Deal?

Ah yes, "jerzygrl", with her lower-middle class grammar and punctuation. I think you are the one who squirms. Michelle Shaniqua Obama imagines herself as the next Jacqueline Kennedy. Unfortunately her inner ghetto frequently betrays her sense of decorum and class. I suspect at some point during her brief tenure as First Lady that she will embarrass herself and her husband's administration. It will be amusing to watch I am sure.

Posted by: Diannne721 | February 3, 2009 10:19 PM

Hey Dianne - Michelle LaVaughn Obama is not the "presumed" First Lady; she is the First Lady. Kind of makes you squirm, doesn't it? I love everytime I see her name in the news and see you react. We all just know it's getting under your skin. What a fun time! First Lady Obama is laughing at people like you all the way back to the White House.

Posted by: jerzygrl | February 3, 2009 10:09 PM

Obama has graduated into the role of Governor...maybe before long he will get to reading the Constitution, and ordering federal banks to stop gouging and loansharking practices on Americans.

Posted by: dottydo | February 3, 2009 10:09 PM

Okay, child-haters! I've read enough of your whiney, poor-me crap about how the President has no business being in a classroom. He should be anywhere, with any American citizen, that he deems fit at a given time. Yes, George W. Bush did visit several D.C. schools during his eight years in office. So, did George H.W, Bush, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford. It is NOT a capital crime for a President to take time out from the poor, neglected "adults" to visit with kids.
As for Kentucky, the President has authorized millions of dollars in aid to ice-stricken states, and sent a full complement of personnel and equipment to help the state deal with the crisis. Senator McConnell is satisfied with FEMA's response up to now, as is the Governor.
For BHo to go to the Bluegrass State, while rescue operations are in full tilt, is a distraction that you would only yammer and gripe about-"He's grabbing the spotlight and getting in the way!"
"Tired of being in the White House"? Every President has been! BHO took an hour off the treadmill, and you compare it to 9/11! The man took full responsibility for the Daschle bomb, less than an hour after reading to the children. When's the last time that happened? I believe it was when JFK owned up to the Bay of Pigs.
I have only one request of the Post: Please stop calling children under 15, who are not public figures, by their surnames. They will be adults soon enough.

Posted by: gjboivin | February 3, 2009 10:01 PM

From the official site:

"The school is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization "

Geez, why not goto a real public school in DC. Unless there was a favor to be fulfilled?

Charter schools are really private schools underneath it all.

Dear Diannne721 (aka Dianne the redneck) - you seem to know how to read and write. Do show some decency. I know inbreeding is to be blamed here, but still...

Posted by: shomudro | February 3, 2009 10:00 PM

A "sense of crisis"? Are you kidding?

Posted by: monk4hall | February 3, 2009 9:59 PM

Geez, people: there was nothing offensive in itself about GW Bush reading to kids -- even as stupid a book as "The Pet Goat," which was written to illustrate certain letter and sounds, not to tell a story, and is therefore kind of a dumb choice for reading aloud. But what was offensive about Bush and "The Pet Goat" was the way he completely froze when told about the attack on the World Trade Center.

On the other hand, I wonder how many of the people who posted here today would know how to react any better, if given horrendous news while sitting in front of a group of small children who had been told how wonderful it was that you were there. How DO you gracefully get out of that situation without scaring the kids or looking like a fool?

Posted by: herzliebster | February 3, 2009 9:51 PM

Whilst Michelle Shaniqua Obama continues her role as presumed First Lady. One should note how difficult it is for her to maintain an air of dignity, class, and good breeding. Although difficult, one would ponder why her affirmative action education did not instill these qualities.

What a dork. Inactive just means you are not actively engaged in the practice of law. If you go inactive you don't have to pay annual dues and you don't have to take the annual continuing legal education classes. I've been inactive since 1985 as my current job doesn't involve the practice of law. It doesn't mean I was disbarred or suspended. It's a voluntary designation I avoid the annual dues and having to take the classes. Another non-issue like the birth certificate. Move on.

Rumor has it that there was a backroom deal about Barry-O to prevent him being disbarred for admitting in his book that he did cocaine, and that he had lied on the initial law license application about his numerous other names. As for Mrs. Barry-0, it was a definate court ordered surrender of her law license.

We printed out the listing a few days ago and for Mrs. Barry O it stated:

Illinois Registration Status:
Voluntarily inactive and not authorized to practice law - Last Registered Year: 1993

Ok, that says "voluntarily inactive" HOWEVER, the next section says

Malpractice Insurance: (Current as of date of registration;consult attorney for further information)
No malpractice report required as attorney is on court ordered inactive status.

Posted by: winemaster2 | February 3, 2009 8:48 PM

Maybe Mr. & Mrs. Soetoro can explain why neither one of them are able to practice law anymore. According to the Illinois bar, Mr. surrendered his license 'voluntarily', but Mrs. was ordered by the court to surrender hers. Maybe the kids were being read to about how to recognize a fake and a fraud? Just Say No, America.

I like presidents who care about children. We all need to put more effort into helping children grow up to be responsible adults. If BO and MO can help make that happen, right on. But I still have to mention how much the photo op calls to mind GWB reading The Pet Goat during Katrina. Doesn't he have something like the country to run? Who's guiding the ship of state?

Posted by: raskolnik | February 3, 2009 8:42 PM

It seems that every time Obama has bad news, like today's withdrawal of Daschle, he jumps and tries to get positive media coverage. He cannot keep flip-flopping over issues, but needs to face his failures. Now, he will probably nominate Oprah for the position, to capture everyone's attention. How sad our President has to act this way.

Posted by: anotherperspective11 | February 3, 2009 8:42 PM

B. Huessain Obama - the ULTIMATE HYPOCRITE! Change you can believe in?? The Chosen One claims to have the most ethical administration in history then he selects Geithner, Killefer, and Daschle. How's that for ethical people. No more revolving door government employee to lobbyist and vice versa. Then the Chosen One selects William Lynn - former Clinton employee, then Raytheon lobbyist, now the #2 official in Dept. of Defense. Another lie! Finally the ultimate in HYPOCRICY. How sweet that he and the Mrs. go visit the local children at a nice little charter school. Oh, that's right, a school he wouldn't dare send the little kiddies to. Yup, change you can believe in...Wake up Libs...You put him there, see him for the liar and hypocrite that he is.

Posted by: Bronco33 | February 3, 2009 8:39 PM

I well remember how the Post and the rest of the left wing media heaped scorn on President Bush for listening to children read when he heard the news of 9/ll. Now President Obama listens to children read and it's the greatest thing a president could do.

Posted by: wilsonj1 | February 3, 2009 8:37 PM

Posted by: Diannne721 | February 3, 2009 8:29 PM

Perhaps Michelle could show her concern for kids by convincing her husband to stop using his armies to kill Afghani and Paki kids in their sleep, as they did last week.

Posted by: georgejones5 | February 3, 2009 8:26 PM

It is hilarious to read all the pathetic comments from the right-wing nut cases and worst. I think President Obama should make it his trademark activity, whenever he visits other places around America over the next four or eight years he should visit a public school. To impress upon the youth that lives and countries are built by communities not people who were born with a silver foot in their mouths who pal around with saudi kings/terrorists.

Posted by: naud | February 3, 2009 8:26 PM

Do all workng women and working mothers a f avor by keeping Michelle Obama in the White House. She is nothing more than the role model of Obama's demenaing and prejudicial stereotype of American women.

She was making over 200,000 in a part time job (Government Affairs at a hospital) and was too incompetent to balance family and work despite a millioinaire income. She has succeeded only by the virtue of who she sleeps with and has no merit of her own. She is an absolute disgrace to the strong and hard working pioneer women in this age.

Just keep her in the Obama bedroom!

Posted by: mgd1 | February 3, 2009 8:26 PM

I wish the Obamas had walked directly across the street to visit a real public school instead of spending all their time at a charter school. They could have learned a great deal.

Posted by: winterpasture | February 3, 2009 8:21 PM

I am quite upset that so many of you are being so negative about the Obamas deciding to go out and touch the lives of a few youth in the area. His campaign was built on change and hope for the future. Why shouldn't he be reading to our youth? They are indeed our future.

NO, there is not a lot of time to waste concerning the problems/issues we face. However, it is important that he takes the time to do these particular things. He can't focus all of his energy on one thing. There must be some balance. Maybe, you should go read to a group of second graders for a change! The more we step up to the plate and take care of those things, the easier it will be for him to focus his energy elsewhere. Do you not expect him to eat, sleep or spend time with his family, either?

It took time to get us into this mess, and it will take time to get us out of it. I think he has been working hard, and in DUE time we will start to see change. However, it certainly will not happen over night or next month even, and it certainly won't happen on your time. Be patient, stop complaining, go out and do something positive yourself! It will make you feel better and you will be giving back to someone who needs it.

And, didn't the Dumbocrat media make a spectacle out of Hurricane Katrina, even though it was the incompetent Dem Mayor and Gov to blame? So, what's next Barry?. . . .might as well give the public the full picture and break out the violin so you can fiddle while Rome is burning. The only comparison to the 44th and the 16th president, is that honest Abe did say you can't fool all the people all the time. LOOK America, the Emperor really has no clothes!!!!!

Mr. President, this is not what you were elected to do. We all know you can read. We all know you care about your kids and those of others. So get the h*ll to work solving the multiple crises facing this nation and send the Secretary of Education to visit classrooms.

Did you know that less than 50% of the innocent children in the "deep blue one-party" city of DC ever graduate from even High School?'s been that way for decades and the Washington POST has never held their pals in the Democrat Party responsible or accountable.............either have the DC voters..............

In the deep blue one-party city of Detroit only 22% of the children graduate from High School there.........Detroit also has the highest crime (see the connection)

Why question is this?

What do folks "perceive" the Democrat Party as "helping" poor people?

Doesn't the Democrat Party REALLY GENERATE poor people?

Is seeing believing?

I am impressed that our President and our First Lady are spending time with the locals, specifically our most precious resources, our children. It is important that they are instilled with hope at a young age and I'm sure that their visit was very inspirational to these children. I hope that they continue to find the time for visits such as this one. Perhaps venturing into other areas where poverty reigns and hope often seems lost, just a few miles from The White House, just across the DC/Maryland border in Prince Georges County.

Team Obama must immediately work with GOP defenders of the Constitution to dismantle the nationwide extrajudicial punishment network...

...authoritarian bureaucrats and security/intel officers and their nationwide network of citizen vigilantes fronted by federally-funded volunteer programs.

This nationwide, Gestapo-like "multi-agency action" operation has made a mockery of the judicial system for the past eight years and has claimed many victims from all strata of society.

Crimes against humanity are being committed across the nation via the use of so-called "directed energy (radiation) weapons" which the Bush D.O.J. recently confirmed are being widely deployed to police forces nationwide.

These RADIATION weapons emit silent, pulsed bursts of various forms of radiation -- and are degrading and damaging the health of those on the receiving end as well as their operators.

This weaponry has NO PLACE in civilized society -- much less in the hands of security personnel who interact with the public. It should be BANNED -- and NOT deployed to local law enforcement with the aid, approval and funding of D.O.J.

The widespread deployment of this weaponry virtually assures its misuse. Imagine if rogue actors tried to use its silent, deadly force to induce illness or to disable our political leaders.

Perhaps they already have.

Victims of this extrajudicial punishment network also see their finances and livelihoods expropriated and destroyed by coordinated "multi-agency action" "programs of personal destruction" that deny them due process of law while degrading their lives and destroying their families.

Obama administration officials must address these abuses IMMEDIATELY, before these affronts to the Constitution destroy more American families -- and subvert the Obama presidency.
