Attorney General To Visit Guantanamo

By Carrie Johnson
Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. told reporters today that he would travel Monday to the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as part of his effort to determine how to handle the 245 remaining terrorism suspects detained there.

"We need to have our feet on the ground to really see what is going on down at the facility, to see how people are being detained, to talk to people down there about the interrogation techniques that are being used," Holder said.

An executive order issued by President Obama directed authorities to close the controversial prison there within one year. Obama put the Attorney General in charge of a multiagency task force that must review case files and figure out whether prisoners can be released, sent to other countries, charged with crimes in U.S. courts or handled through the military commission process.

Holder said that career prosecutor Matthew G. Olsen will be the executive director of the working group and will accompany him to Guantanamo Bay early next week. Olsen is a former assistant U.S. attorney in the District who has worked at Justice Department headquarters for the past several years on national security issues, including foreign intelligence surveillance and espionage prosecutions.

The Attorney General characterized the looming trip as "an important first step as we try to resolve the issues that the president has put before me as the chairman of those review committees."

Greg Craig, the White House counsel, is at Guantanamo Bay today, White House officials said. He and a team of attorneys from the Departments of Justice and Defense are visiting the site ahead of Holder, as they work toward recommendations from a task force on the handling of detainees.

Daylo1 isn't aware that Obama just ordered more troops into Afghanistan, I guess. He's too busy being a big manly he-man sort of man -- when he's not quivering in his boots about terrorists in Gitmo.

Excellent comment. Yes, what is with this craven, sniveling fear of conservatives? Osama Bin Ladin is really pulling their strings, isn't he?

No men here. They're all dead and buried...the men that is.

And how bout our boy Holder, each and every one of you participating in this discussion ARE COWARDS!

Soon the guvament will be telling you that you have to have a party every weekend. Now, Holder didn't say it specifically, but you know how bureaucracies work. To that party you WILL invite a diverse group of people, relative to their percentage makeup of the population. It doesn't matter where you find 'em, you must invite them. If they choose not to come, you will have failed in the mission the Attorney General of the U.S. KKK of A. has laid out for you. Don't be a coward.

Sir, I suggest you examine the label on the beverage bottle you are sipping from.

The hubris and arrogance of the Democrats was once also exhibited by Newt and the Contract with America.

There is this belief that because the middle voted for your party they must believe in every policy of your party.

This last election the middle was offered a choice between the helpless and the hopeless; we still don't know who won.

Obama still doesn't have a complete cabinet. Why? Because he can't find enough Dems who can pass a basic honesty test. When he reaches out across the aisle he gets his hand slapped because they see his plans and schemes.

An $800 billion dollar socialist bailout which he and the party refused to let people read before they voted.

A hurried dinner trip back to Chicago to spread more spackle on the Burris scam to protect Obama's "good" name.

I want a good, sound, and prudent government. One that will fulfill "provide for the common defense and promote the general welfare".

This government has already proven I'll have to wait for another.

And if you start spouting the 8 years mantra then I'll know you think a bad government should be followed by one that is worse.

bark on wingnuts, bark yourselves horse, the more you yap, yap, yap - the more the fool you show to be.

If I had a year to marshall a multi-agency task force to develop a real solution to gitmo, you can bet your not so smart back side that I'd have a good look first hand.

As the ol' man used to say, you know, he was one of you barking dog conservatives - man could he ever foam at the mouth - he used to say; trust none of what you hear and half of what you see. I'd go have a look too, and I'd bring along some other eyes and confer.

GITMO is the perfect place for Holder.

He is, after all, a domestic terrorist sworn to destroy this country.

I can't wait to see pictures of him in his little orange jump suit.

And imagine what secrets he will spill when he is water boarded? The remaining rot in the Democratic party will be exposed.

Now, how to get the rest of the gang to take a trip to GITMO?

The neo-cons told the world that somehow, the people they tortured at Guantanamo were a bigger threat than the gangbangers in Super-Max or the racist Aryan resisitance skinheads, and only neo-con studs with towels rolled up and pushed down the front of their trousers, could protect the world from those mean people they kept at Guantanamo.

The neo-cons would not give up their freakish neo-con torture fetishes at Guantanamo without a fight.

SAINT---The, "Obasama" won by 10 million votes, on route to winning the largest number of votes EVER in a US Prez election (70 million to be precise). The voter turnout (as a percentage of eligible voters) was the highest it's been since 1964, when the Gluttonous Old Porkers (GOP) ran Barry "Nuke the World to Hell" Goldwater.

Hmmmmm, snicker, snicker, good luck overcoming them apples in 2012, snicker, snicker. Btw, I was at the inaug ceremony, and contrary to what fat boy, pharma-addict rush is reporting, there were actually 2 million + people. I realize that fat boy has been telling you that "Obasama's" crowds were fictitiously created by the MSM, but unfortunately for you, they’re real.

Getting back to the topic of what constitutes a landslide as it pertains to the right to claim an “Executive Mandate”, you’re once again misguided by your disdain for the American majority. Since you question BHO’s claim to a mandate, why don’t you take a little accountability for GWB’s complete lack of a mandate. And by that I mean like, hhmmm EVER. Remember 2000? Did GWB have a mandate to govern then, being ½ million behind in the popular vote? Hmmmm, NNNOOO. Let’s see, what about 2004, did GWB have a mandate then, when he won by about 1.5% and 30 electoral votes? Hmmmm, NO.

Finally, just to make sure that of us understand you correctly, are you implying that the president has to win Texa$$ in order for his victory to be valid? Please, don’t even try to answer yes to that one.

Good luck SAINT---The. They say the first rule in the Art of War is to never underestimate your opponent, but given that you GOPer’s mucked everything up so thoroughly I for one am very, very happy to see you all committing that fallacy. After all, your hubris is the cure for all the world’s woes. God knows that task doesn’t rest on your benevolence, because that seems to be in very short demand.

Neo-cons continued to chastize the Cuban government of Fidel Castro for what they bellowed were "Human Rights Violations!". Neo-cons wanted America to carry on the blockade to starve out the Cuban people in the name of capitalism.

Then the neo-cons got their hands on a slice of the Cuban island and they used it to carry out freakish neo-con torture fetishes and to create the Guantanamo concentration camp.

The neo-cons needed to sell fear in the hinterlands and Guantanmo served its purpose as a place where neo-cons hid people they claimed were more dangerous than Crips, Bloods, the Aryan Reisitance, the Ku Klux Klan and MS-13. For the neo-cons, the ghosts they hid at Guantanmo were more dangerous to the survival of humanity than the nuclear-armed and racist Israeli apartheid regime.

Neo-con rats would eventually need the world to round them up and ship them off to Guantanamo for the good of the human race.

If they are going to be tried and the USA has proof that they are terrorists have a trial. Give them legal representation in a court of law or the world court or buy them a ticket home!

We are letting Israeli settlers, military and government kill the people of Palestine, especially Gaza with USA support and weapons!

We are worried about people in USA run prisons being tortured by USA employees.
While in Gaza and Iraq we have created the next generation of children to hate the people of the USA; by fabrication of a war in Iraq and providing weapons to Israel to kill Palestines.

Good work USA politicians who take foreign country lobby monies! This is resulting in much world hate of USA citizens and our country.

Let us return to being a positive role model for the world instead of a rogue dictatorship that we did see with George Bush!

Posted by: deborahzaki | February 18, 2009 6:14 PM

One of the tenets of the liberal ideology holds that lawbreakers are products of their society and therefore not to be held to account for what non-liberals call "crimes." Holder and his ilk no doubt go further and hold the US responsible for the acts of terrorists. Holder should follow his leftwing instincts and release every man in Guantanamo. Send them to liberal strongholds in Illiniois and California, examples of what liberalism does when in power long enough.

I think the proof of guilt for those at Guantanamo was the fact that they were captured on the battlefield fighting US forces. Shooting guns and RPGs at US military forces has never been a good idea, and now it's apparently criminal. There's your proof of guilt.

Bush's house-of-horrors concentration camp at Guantanamo is a stain on America and an absolute disgrace!

I am so thankful this new administration will rejoin the civilized world, close Gitmo and reject torture.

Some people there are undoubtedly bad guys, so they should be put on trial to see if they are guilty of crimes. This requires transparent and open courtroom proceedings, NOT "secret" military trials. This is called justice and it's an American ideal.

Let the right-winger bed-wedding cowards whine, cry and shake in terror. Gitmo must be closed. We are stronger with the rule of law and human rights on our side and I have faith in our system to deal with extremsist who threaten us.

Conservatives apparently have zero faith in our country and principles and we will NOT let them sink our country to the level of despots, dictators and human rights abusers anymore.

The hoopla over loony-left liberal d-crat TAX CHEATS geithner, daschle, killefer, solis and countless others was just a warm-up to the ultimate, atrocious cabinet appointment - that of the incompetent, intellectually challenged, bottom-feeder holder.

holder is so BAD he even makes Gonzo look semi-competent.

Besides repeatedly coddling terrorists, holder's main effort for bill clinton was to protect bill's sugardaddy, marc rich, so that rich could continue to provide millions to both bill and hillary. holder, acting like the classic step-n-fetch-it, helped bill to pardon the fugitive rich for his many crimes.

There is no doubt holder will do similar, disgusting things for the marxist drug addict. He will do everything possible to protect hussein's sugardaddy, tony rezko, so that this convicted felon can continue to slip thousands to hussein in land-deals and under-the-table payments. In addition, he'll work hard to further protect and coddle terrorists and illegal immigrants, like hussein's criminal aunt (note to ICE: after attending the inauguration, she is now hiding in Cleveland and still ignoring the deportation order).

Now that's "Change we can deceive in".

Will the experiment be to Lock him in a room alone with one prisoner at a time with only a table and a machete on the table?
I guess he could also say he is a Christian and will never be a muslim.

It looks like even if he were attacked, the Prisoner is going to get out anyway.

Why go to the Russian turf now?

A trip before Obama signed anything would have been more intelligent.
