A Release from Guantanamo Bay
By Garance Franke-Ruta
President Obama has promised to shutter the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay within a year of assuming office. How close is he to fulfilling that promise?
The Post is keeping track, and has built a database of the detainees held at Guantanamo. This database was compiled by Washington Post researchers who, from 2002 to May 2006, gathered the names and countries of origin of detainees in Guantanamo from unofficial, public sources such as news accounts, legal documents (habeas corpus petitions, CSRT tribunals documents, etc.), interviews with attorneys and relatives, and information from detainee support sites across the Web.
The Post printed only names that it had verified from a single reputable source or multiple sources. Some names were transliterated from Arabic or had alternative spellings. The collection was the largest list of names made public at that point, encompassing more than 550.
Today, the Department of Justice announced that Binyam Mohamed, 30, has been released from Guantanamo. The Defense Department had been, until today, not releasing the names of former detainees as a matter of policy, but with today's release the Justice Department will take over the public notifications.
Country of origin: Originally from Ethiopia, Mohamed was a British resident at the time of his arrest in Pakistan in April 2002.
Years in Gitmo: Mohamed was transfered to Gitmo in Sept. 2004, more than two years after his arrest.
Country of release: He was flown to an air base outside of London, England, where he was released today.
Number of detainees remaining: 241
