Obama Formally Nominates Locke for Commerce

President Obama, center, introduces Gary Locke, former governor of Washington, left, as his choice for commerce secretary as Vice President Biden looks on. (Mannie Garcia/Bloomberg News)

By Anne E. Kornblut
President Obama named Gary Locke as his commerce secretary on Wednesday, keeping up a rapid pace of announcements in a week that also includes his joint address to Congress and his first budget launch.

Locke, the former governor of Washington State, comes to the job as a lawyer with expertise in China. He was Obama's third choice, after both New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (D) and N.H. Sen. Judd Gregg (R) withdrew their nominations.

"I'm sure it's not lost on anyone that we've tried this a couple of times. But I'm a big believer in keeping at something until you get it right," Obama said in the Indian Treaty Room, where he made the announcement. He said he was grateful Locke "agreed to leave one Washington for another."

"Business, not government, is the engine of growth in this country," Obama said, praising Locke's work with corporations as governor.

Obama and Vice President Biden are next meeting with Democratic leaders in Congress, in a closed gathering in the White House Cabinet Room. Later today, Obama will see Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and ranking members of the Senate Banking Committee and the House Financial Services Committee in the Oval Office.

As if the schedule weren't full enough, Obama has entertainment on the calendar tonight: he and his wife, Michelle, are hosting Stevie Wonder at a White House party honoring his receipt of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The event will air on PBS stations on Thursday night at 6 p.m.

Lockmallup, which age are you living? It seems that you do not trust Locke’s patriotism. I would say that whoever distrusts another American’s loyalty to the country without evidence is a cancer to our society, since our society is a microcosm of the world. Not only the mentality is questionable, but the logic is flawed. Suppose you are an American of English descent, does it mean that you are loyal to the queen now? Suppose you are an American of German descent, does it mean that your family was loyal to Kaiser Wilhelm and Adolf Hitler? Locke’s family has been here for three generations, but communism prevailed in China only two generations. Nixon visited China in 1972, and American leaders, like Bush, frequented China. A well-know fact is that China has become well-integrated into the global capitalist economy. I am disappointed by the message, which is an unhealthy combination of medieval ignorance and Cold War paranoid.

Expertise in China. Why wasn't this man his first pick? Judd Greg was a joke. Man doesn't care about American workers one bit.

I'm only commenting on the photo:

The President's nomination and speech did not take place at the White House. It occurred at the Commerce Department Building.

(Notice the marble wall in the back--not in the White House).

At One-Month Mark, Obama's Approval Rating Lower than Jimmy Carter's

Gallup has evaluated first-month job approval for U.S. presidents going back to Richard Nixon.

A few points deserve note.

First, Obama’s 63 percent approval level is about the same as the average of all presidents (62 percent) going back to 1968 during their first month in office.

Barack Obama’s “disapproval,” at 24 percent, however, is slightly higher than the average of the other presidents (16%).

Second, Obama’s approval among self-identified Democrats and pure independents rose slightly over the last month. Yet his standing with independent-leaning Republicans and conservative Republicans dipped.

The president’s numbers crept up 1 to 4 points among Democrats but dropped 14 points in the last month among conservative Republicans.

I think this is a very good pick for commerce...strong Asian connections are ESSENTIAL for selling the bonds and for re-establishing trade lings....speaking a bit of Chinese helps!

Let's see if Biden,Hillary, and the others give him room to maneuver.

Collins and Snow extracted protections for BATH IRON WORKS and KITTERY Naval yard; and perhaps a few other things as the price for backing the Porkulous! The gurls know how to bargain!

Poor guy. Probably received a colo-rectal exam from everybody including the IRS, ICE, CIA, FBI and the local library prior to being nominated.

Who's posting odds on how long he lasts, or whether he gets the job?

I can just hear the Republicans exclaim, "Woah, now, hold on! This ain't U.N., it's America!"

I can just imagine the redneck Republicans crying, "Woah, now, hold on! This is America, not the damned U.N.!"

Refreshing to see a POTUS that admits mistakes and takes the buck stops here responsibility for his plans. Obama's plans are successful and the permanent majority Rove spoke about will be Democratic. Judging by the public's response to Jindahl's rebuttal and Collins bump up in Maine, I'd say backing Obama plans with input of your own is the productive way to win voters back into the Republican column. Republicans cry about chump change taxes not paid by Democrats when 25% of Swiss bank funds were withdrawn when they began reporting tax cheats to the west. A crackdown on offshore banks, not allowing money transfers from western banks unless they report would gain billions in lost tax revenue. I don't see the cheats trusting the Dubai banks to safeguard their coin.

Mr. Locke: As commerce secretary, you will be in a position to help ban the proliferation of silent radiation weaponry (a/k/a "directed energy weapons") being used by rogue and criminal elements to torture and degrade the health of their "targets."

ATTENTION: MR. LOCKE; LEADERS OF CONGRESS; ATTY. GEN. ERIC HOLDER, DHS SEC. NAPOLITANO, / DHS/DOJ EXEC. STAFF (please forward)

RE: BUSH JUSTICE DEPARTMENT APPROVAL OF RADIATION WEAPONS USE (TORTURE) ON U.S. CITIZENS...

... coordinated multi-agency action "programs of personal destruction" manned by security/intel/revenue agents, local police nationwide, citizen vigilantes fronted by government-funded community policing and anti-terrorism programs.

IT IS DAY 37 OF THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION.

DOMESTIC TORTURE VIA RADIATION WEAPONRY CONTINUES.

FEDERALLY-ENABED COMMUNITY GANG STALKING, SURREPTITIOUS HOME ENTRIES AND VANDALISM OF 'TARGETS' CONTINUES.

WHAT DO GATES, BRENNAN, BLAIR, MUELLER AND SULLIVAN HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS?

WHAT HAVE THEY TOLD OBAMA, BIDEN, NAPOLITANO, PANETTA, HOLDER AND GEITHNER?

By now, the loony-left liberal media has leaned from the exposing of d-crat TAX CHEATS geithner, daschle, killifer and solis that they MUST NOT DISCLOSE THE TAX CHEATING FOR OTHER hussein cabinet choices in order to protect their marxist drug addict messiah

So don't expect to learn how much locke has cheated on his taxes from the bottom-feeder media.

BUT WE KNOW HE DID IT!

The worst cabinet nomination since HRC. Out of the fire, and now Locke step right into the communist chinese wok of economic ruin!
Defeat the Locke nomination to keep jobs at home.
P.S. Leonard Abess Jr sold City National of Florida back to Spain. Why is Obama lauding him for that?

In that picture alone, you saw about almost 1/2 of the world's people represented.

The only people not represented were the women kind! Had Nancy Pelosi appeared with Locke, Obama, and Biden too the picture would have represented roughly 3/4 of the world's diversity in terms of race, gender, and otherwise!
