Michelle Obama Shines Her Spotlight on Military Families

By DeNeen L. Brown
Supporting military families, she has said, is an issue "close to her heart." And on her first solo out-of-town trip as first lady, Michelle Obama went to Fort Bragg Military base in North Carolina, where she was greeted by cheers from soldiers. She talked with soldiers, posed for pictures and gave hugs, according to a pool report, before meeting for a private lunch with 20 family members and five volunteers who help provide support for soldiers and their families.

The tour at Fort Bragg, her office said, is part of her campaign as first lady to meet military spouses and learn about support services that are available to military families.

Obama has said in the past weeks that more national attention must be paid to the plight of military families, and turned their needs into one of the signature issues on which she has focused her attention.

Last week at the women's center at Arlington National Cemetery, Obama said military families have a special courage and strength, noting that military service doesn't stop with the person wearing the uniform.

"They are mothers and fathers who have lost their beloved children to war," Obama said. "They are husbands and wives keeping the family on track while their wives and husbands are deployed, on duty. They are grandparents, aunts and uncles, sisters and brothers who are taking care of children while single moms or dads in uniform are away."

She continued: "See, military families have done their duty, and we as a grateful nation must do ours. We must do everything in our power to honor them by supporting them; not just by word but by deed."

Support for military families has long been a top issue for President Obama and the first lady and remains a high priority. During the presidential campaign, Michelle Obama often traveled around the country to have conversations with families "who," she said, "are left behind when our men and women go off to serve."

Later today she is expected to speak with members of community organizations in Fayetteville that provide support to soldiers and their families.

vztownes-Laura Bush did countless things for our military families, including visits (she visited Daniel Pearl's widow for only one out of many examples) and hosting events for military personnel at the WH. The difference? The slobbering Obamamedia hardly ever reported it.

She is FAR from the "stepford wife" that the media has been portraying her as for all these years.

I am quite pleased with the job that the Obamas are doing. It's only been a few weeks, but they are already making MOST of us
( see the polls)proud . For 8 years this country had an embarrassing and incompetent president in office. We are now suffering as a result. I will continue to pray for Obama's president's safety and success. We suffered for 8 long years and deserve better.

Guess the Ugly Zulu wanted to show our troops just how to tone those arms. Is she EVER going to wear sleeves now that the msm is slobbering over her muscles?

Posted by: segeny | March 13, 2009 7:59 PM

How many times did Laura Bush visit with military families without the company of her deranged deadbeat husband? The only use Bush had for the military was as cannon fodder for his illegal wars and as political background props.

Vegasgirl..I don't owe you an explanation (I could ask you what you've done lately), but how's this? A very big donation to Wounded Warriors..more than the Bidens gave to charity in an entire year.

Dargremeg...Mrs. Obama made that similar comment TWICE. I'm just saying that she says military families are "close to her heart," but apparently not when she made that comment.

Posted by: Darlene_Jr | March 13, 2009 11:50 AM

are you serious? my husband and myself both grew up in military families from infancy to adulthood. i'm really shocked the michelle obama is choosing this cause as her top priority. military families have it tough but they are well taken care of by the military. there are so many support programs that will help them, not to mention that they have good benefits and healthcare. why not focus on a group that is more disadvantaged? how about foster children, march of dime babies...the lists of people in more despatate need goes on and on. come one...gimme a break. military families have many resources, many other groups have far less.

as long as she doesn't bring a red reset botton, it is honorable.

Posted by: robe1 | March 13, 2009 10:12 AM

I seem to remember that is was Barack Obama who said he once "considered" joining the military. He decided not to.
He refused to place his hand over his heart during the national anthem, refused to wear an American flag on his person, refused to salute the soldiers, his wife's comment that she had never been proud to be an American, until now.

Obama continues to smack down Christians and Jews in America, gives in to the terrorists in proclaiming that America has lost the war in Afghanistan and seeks to smoke the peace pipe with the same terrorists repsonsible for 9/11.
Patriots my arse!

I used to be a lifelong registered (for 30+ years) Democrat---until Obama was elected.

The Obama's make me sick!

Why would I condsider either of them to be proud American citizens now?

Posted by: morningglory51 | March 13, 2009 9:14 AM

Michelle Obama is an absolute disgrace and a traitor!

Posted by: morningglory51 | March 13, 2009 9:05 AM

Anything positive now attributed to Michelle Obama's good attitude toward the military does not jibe with what I have heard coming out of her mouth. Sorry about that - not fooling me, Ms Michelle, ma Belle....

Posted by: TXSFRED | March 12, 2009 9:20 PM

The Obamas ?

You mean the Two self-righteous pigs, that snubbed there nose at the hero's ball.

So now this chi-town hood-rat decides to, shine her light on the US military.

What a joke.

I am a 100% disabled veteran of the U.S. Army. I sacrificed my health and wellbeing for our country. I totally support our new Commander-in-Chief, President Obama, with my goodwill, my moral support, and my prayers. He won the election by 8 million popular votes, a clear majority (as opposed to Mr. Bush who lost by 500,000 votes in 2000). I am enthused about Mrs. Obama's advocacy for military families. No American who cares about our troops should put down or diss anyone (from any political party) who is willing to help out American military families. Supporting our troops is not and should not be a partisan issue. I did not vote for Mr. Bush, but I think Mrs. Laura Bush's work promoting literacy and Mrs. Bush's advocacy for women in Afghanistan was and is commendable. Mrs. Bush has also done wonderful work to help public and school libraries rebuild after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Literacy, equal rights for women, and rebuilding American libraries -- these aren't partisan issues either. Neither of these women, Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Obama, is compelled to do anything for our country when serving as first lady. I am grateful for Mrs. Bush's legacy. And I am grateful for the work Mrs. Obama is doing. When anyone bashes either Mrs. Bush or Mrs. Obama, as them what they are doing to make American better for other, needy citizens and communities. Some of these critics have nothing to offer other people except criticism. By the way, in spite of my disabilities I volunteer at the locla humane society and with a community food distribution program for the poor. Everyone should be following the example of Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Obama.

First of all, I'm a veteran so I do have ground from which to speak.

That said - who are all these ignorant twerps on here acting like they have a position from which to attack the Obama's? Obviously you didn't even bother to check the voting records regarding veterans issues for the past few years. Or for that matter - the whole of McCain's career. McCain might be a veteran himself, but the voting record shows, he has urinated on all those that followed him again and again with no votes on virtually every item that came for a vote. No wonder the DAV rated him at 27% and Obama at 92%.

So - just shut up you jerks.

Yeah - you - the folks that cheered while the moron Bush led us into a war totally ill equipped and unprepared for the aftermath. The moron that left our troops precariously under armored to deal with an insurgency - to all of you JUST SHUT UP - you pigs!

Well Said, TPartier!! This retired (30-year) veteran (whose son was wounded in the first gulf war and whose grandson is on duty as we speak on a FOB near Baghdad) completely agrees with your apt assessment of the chicken hawks who rail against common sense and support of our President.

Posted by: gandalfthegrey | March 12, 2009 7:31 PM

While Barry can always take pride in the Fact if it was up to Him, Saddam HUSSEIN would STILL own Iraq-and STILL be defying UN Mandates, Oil for Food, while sending Suicide Vests and blood Money all around;

Michelle can only hope the Military gets to be the First to use Open Ballots to Unionize!

How should I phrase it?:

Posted by: SAINT---The | March 12, 2009 7:09 PM

And why is this news? Most be a real slow day.

Posted by: Bubbette1 | March 12, 2009 7:02 PM

TPartier, I'm not sure calling the willfully ignorant masses "pigs" is the best way to handle it. People like that need to be ignored, not encouraged.

Remember, they have a right to spout whatever sewage they like; freedom of speech and all that. As such, best not to sink to their level or even acknowledge them. Don't waste time on them, eh?

Posted by: Fallen1 | March 12, 2009 7:00 PM

And special props to TPartier for your spot-on post -- which will probably make ranters (like larry's) heads explode, especially when it comes to the facts.
Glad to hear from a veteran; thank you for your service to our nation, poster.

Posted by: vegasgirl1 | March 12, 2009 6:51 PM

dargregmag and Hillman: Great posts by both of you. How quickly those who salivated all over the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq now have the chutzpah to call out the Obamas for actually trying to do something constructive. But isn't that just typical of the deluded 25 percent?

LarryG62, much has been made of President Obama's opposition to the surge. He actually did agree that it succeeded on Bill O'Reilly's show. Many people did not agree with his assessment for good reason.

For those of us who read history or have been here before, this policy sounded like escalation in a losing cause. The surge coincided with three things - the conclusion of Shi-ite ethnic cleansing and securing of their boundaries in Baghdad, the unilateral cease fire put into effect by the leader of the Mahdi army, and the alliance between the US and the Sunni's against al Qaeda, which took everyone by surprise. None of these things were related to the surge, but the drop in violence was attributed to the surge.

There is a difference between black patriotism, and black pride in America. This is because of our nation's undeniable history of slavery, segregation and racism. Racial and ethnic disparities persist.

Despite this, black Americans did not "opt out" of our union. In hundreds of thousands of ways, including in this effort by the First Lady, black Americans have done more than just express patriotism. They have strived to support each other and the country, and to create change for the better. Many black Americans do not feel pride because they are the ones who feel the effect when America does not live up to its ideals. But she has never been less than completely patriotic.

I would add that with the exception of general civil unrest in the 60s, there are no bands of black people in our country striving to unite in hatred of the Federal government, as white militias are being urged to do today. Their radio talk show hosts have never at any time wished or hoped for the country's failure. They are not ruminating about the possibility of taking over the military as white former CIA and former military leaders do on Glenn Beck's "War Room." There are no black actors actively agitating for a secessionist movement, as Chuck Norris is.

These are the ones who lack both patriotism and pride in our country.

A note to Darlene Jr: When Michele Obama made "that" statement it was obviously taken out of context as most of the soundbites from that campaign where the now Pres.and First Lady were concerned it was played ad nauseum by the so-called patriotic right-wing media hacks, what i find amazing as a boomer who's dad fought in WW2 and wathched in embarassment as my father was routinely discriminated against how some of you conveniently forget about those insults that cut deep then and resonate now when I hear people question the President's and First Lady's patriotism.

Posted by: dargregmag | March 12, 2009 6:17 PM

Darlene Jr. -- What exactly have you done for the troops lately? (Sorry, having a yellow sticker on your SUV won't cut it.)
Mrs. Obama is no more a hypocrite than you are.
I'll say this for you, at least: You aren't hateful like posters Larry or virgeo.

Posted by: vegasgirl1 | March 12, 2009 6:15 PM

virgosiempre - what a hateful person you are. President Obama and the first Lady have done more for the troops than Bush ever did. All Bush did was sent our soldiers to die in Iraq for an unnecessary war. They are the first family and they can travel all they want. You on the other hand better get on board or you will stay further behind with the rethugs.

Posted by: OB08 | March 12, 2009 6:11 PM

This is the woman who wrote anti American rhetoric at Princeton?! This is yet another photo op for the Obama family who seem to enjoy spending tons of money on fuel and security to be photographed. I feel it is FAR MORE sensitive to conserve and do more substantial things for the families. Oh, I forgot, President Obama believes a pay raise of about$40.00 a month constitutes "SUPPORT" of troops. Every time the President "salutes" he never looks at the escort and has an expression of "pain on his face". I no longer believe his "change" mantra. President and Mrs. Obama, please stop flying to Camp David and all over the United States for photo ops. Thank you.

Posted by: virgosiempre | March 12, 2009 5:58 PM

I don't think it is out of line to point out Mrs. Obama's hypocrisy. When she said she was proud of her country for the first time in her adult life, could she think of nothing to be proud of...including the service of these military families?

Posted by: Darlene_Jr | March 12, 2009 5:57 PM

A note to LARRYG62: Well, if you're former Pres.w hadn't lied to get us into this phony war on terror in Iraq then you wouldn't be on this blog, still no weapons of Mass Distraction found, only billions spent and good lives lost.Don't direspect the First Lady with your bull s#&t,get your facts straight or maybe you can get your buddy Dick Cheney on the phone and he can tell us how much money he has had funneled to his cronies and his offshore accounts in the Cayman's by way of Haliburton.

Posted by: dargregmag | March 12, 2009 5:38 PM

LarryG62: The only phony here is YOU. Your nasty attacks won't cover up how much of a bitter loser you are. Michelle Obama, BTW, has more integrity, class, decency and humanity in her little finger than you do into your entire body.
Get a life, poster. Oh, and while you're at it, go ENLIST, chickenhawk.

Posted by: vegasgirl1 | March 12, 2009 5:38 PM

Larry, making up stuff is a poor substitute for intelligent argument.

Michelle Obama's support for military families was her signature issue throughout the campaign, featured not only in speeches but in a number of joint appearances, programs, and service activities.

You are clueless. If she had come to this as a new issue after the election, I don't think there would have been anything wrong with that -- but in fact, just the opposite is true. Try reaching outside your Limbaugh-induced haze for reality-based information sometime. There's a lot of real life going on out here!

Posted by: fairfaxvoter | March 12, 2009 5:35 PM

You are so right LarryG62

Its time to impeach Obama, that phony, commie, nazi, pinko, community worker, piece of bat turd.
Take it away GOP...You have lots of time on your hands.

Posted by: hayden1 | March 12, 2009 5:31 PM

Wow, Larry.

Bitter much?

As far as I know Michelle and Barack are actually different people.

I don't believe she's ever voiced an opinion on the surge.

As for the surge 'working', nearly every expert says it was a contributing factor to stabilization, but a far greater factor was new cooperation between Sunni/Shia, the 'awakening' and other factors totally unrelated to additional troops.

As for 'working'..... maybe my definition of working is different than yours. Iraq will be a mess for decades, whether we are there or not.

If that's your definition of 'working' then I feel sorry for you.

And, more importantly, the entire war was a mess, and Barack was against it from day one.

It's easy to get all soft and fuzzy about a military family where dad is in the sh-t and mom is home with the kids; but when will the military stop the ridiculous practice of deploying a sole parent or both parents. Even if soldiers volunteer for service, the overall national will should resist putting both parents (or the only one in a single-parent family) in harms way.

We may have a volunteer army - but volunteering against the overall national good is as imperfect as sitting back and letting the other guy do it.

Posted by: charlesjacksonnyc | March 12, 2009 5:13 PM

Now she says to honor our military and their families. It only comes after her phony husband, who mouthed off against the surge and never did admit that it worked, was elected. Before that they didn't have time for those who defend us. She hadn't even been proud of our nation until the phony ran for president. Too little too late from these liberal snits.
