Obama Considering Guard Troops on Texas-Mexico Border

By Spencer S. Hsu
President Obama is reviewing a request from Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) to send National Guard troops to the Mexico border in response to violence triggered by Mexico's fight against drug cartels, the White House said.

"We're going to examine whether and if National Guard deployments would make sense and under what circumstances they would make sense," Obama told reporters from regional newspapers on Wednesday, as reported by the Dallas Morning News and McClatchy Newspapers.

"I'm not interested in militarizing the border," Obama said.

In his most direct comments so far on the drug fight that has killed 7,000 people in Mexico since the beginning of 2008, the president praised Mexico President Felipe Calderón for "taking some extraordinary risks under extraordinary pressure" to fight the cartels.

Obama said he will present a plan "within a few months" to counter the southbound smuggling of guns and cash that support the cartels.

U.S. officials say the amount of violence that has spilled over into the United States so far does not warrant major concern. Nevertheless, Obama added, "I think it's unacceptable if you've got drug gangs crossing our borders and killing U.S. citizens."

Perry, who last month called on Washington to pay for 1,000 additional troops or federal agents on the border, called Obama's statement "a mistake."

"Washington has been an abject failure [in] defending our border," Perry told Fox News's Neil Cavuto. "I'm not going to sit back while the feds do not do their job."

At least we finally have a president that recognizes, that the biggest danger this nation faces right now, from any source, is right across our southern border. It's not the drug people. It's the Mexican governments tacit agreement, connivance with, and aid to their citizens who intend to take back Southwest America. The millions and millions of illegal aliens in America right now – mostly Mexicans -- are only a huge fifth column that is threatening to undermine our concept of what America is, our culture, and our business and financial well being. Admittedly, the problem spreads far beyond the Southwest.

But up to know, most American president’s since Eisenhower have refused to deal with the situation, and members of congress have even jumped right in and helped the enemy, for make no mistake, every illegal alien is an enemy of this countries rule of law and order.

When this nation wakes up and resets our immigration laws to those of before 1965, and seriously starts to deport illegal’s and throw their employers in prison, I will believe we are finally headed in the right direction.

After we send the troops to Medheho-We need to send troops the langly Park, Manassas, and Columbia heights and get them illegal alliens out of here. The illegal alliens make worse for legal alliens.

Instead of sending the olive-drab clothed great-great-grandchildren of Blackjack Pershing to the border, how about extraditing domestic US drug dealers to Mexico to face charges for complicity in the murders in Mexico?

A good start but 15,000 would be more appropriate. Buyers remorse JakeD, no, I like McCain and the strain probably would have killed him. Maher's humor having Palin ask for the launch codes is funny because she is not one step from the presidency. Keep posting all day here Jake, I think your neighbors prefer it that way.

Okay segeny, read this again and tell me what it says...

ohreallynow and his buddy the bozo apparently are unaware that drug gangs (as well as men in the uniforms of the mexican army) are ALREADY crossing our borders and killing U.S. citizens. Of course, there are none so blind as those who WILL NOT SEE and who refuse to be confused with the facts.

Posted by: segeny | March 13, 2009 7:57 PM

...yeah because we never had a border problem before Obama was president, right?

Check this out:

"Standing here and talking to the California National Guard is a stark reminder of the failure of the federal government to secure our borders. I believe it is totally irresponsible for the politicians in Washington DC to have failed yet again to pass a comprehensive immigration reform plan and address this national crisis.

Until our border is secure, I know all Americans share my concern about drug trafficking and illegal immigration, as well as the possibility of terrorists entering our country undetected...

I agreed to send volunteer Guard troops to help the federal government do its job on a temporary basis. But make no mistake about it this is a federal responsibility and we need comprehensive reform of U.S. immigration policy so our sovereignty and public safety are protected."

- Arnold Schwarzenegger, June, 2006

More:

* The federal government has agreed to reimburse the state for all costs of the mission. On June 15, President Bush signed a bill that appropriates $708 million to fund Operation Jump Start

* The National Guard troops will not play a direct role in law enforcement activities, including apprehension or maintaining custody of detained persons

* The majority of the National Guard troops will be "duration forces" which will serve from six to 12 month tours of duty on the border

* The National Guard will end its border mission no later than Dec. 31, 2008

Sure glad we solved THAT problem.

Karen/Carleen/Ralph/Sue,

Calm yourself, dear. You're starting to froth at the mouth.

Posted by: EGNB | March 13, 2009 4:34 PM

Either:
1. Carleen19771 = Ralphinphnx = Sue1980 = Karen2009
2. You're all copying from the same playbook
3. You all think from the same brain (not a very big one)

In any case, you bitter people need to face the truth which is that this is your democratically-elected President. If you don't like it, you can always leave. (Isn't this what you people were so fond of saying over the past 8 years?)

As a currently-serving military member (and one who's served through the entirety of the past administration), I fully support the decision to conduct prudent planning before committing troops to any mission. Keep in mind, as well, that any the National Guard, when in federal service, is bound by law not to conduct law enforcement missions. The President has to be careful in how he approaches this problem. Militarizing the border is not necessarily the answer.

So tell me, are you chickenhawks leaping at the opportunity to tap the already overstretched National Guard without thinking long and hard about whether it's absolutely warranted?

So, why do the dimwit Dummercrats like the
fake President from Kenya and Great Messiah
Barack Hussein Obama and his equally stupid
Sec of Homeland Security Former Arizona
Gov Janet Napolitano never learn from past
experiences like when George W Bush put
National Guard Troops on the Border and it
was this same idiot then Gov of Arizona
Janet Napolitano who refused to let them
carry ammunition for their weapons and who
tried every means possible to sabotgue the
Arizona State Legistlature Efforts to Pass
a Tough Employer Sanctions Law that strictly Prohibited Employers from Hiring
Illegal Alien and who allowed Phoenix Mayor
Phil Gordon and his pathetic Police Chief
Jack Harris to create a Sanctuary City out
of Phoenix AZ without a vote of the people
as well. And so don't ever count on Obama
and Napolitano or Phil Gordon to do a damn
thing to stop the drug cartels and the ever
growing violnce and increasing kidnappings
in Arizona and Phoenix,as I live here and
I have seen it all happening and getting
worse and worse ever day. Fire that useless
Do Nothing Janet Napolitano and Impeach
Barack Hussein Obama and Jail Mayor Phil
Gordon & Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris
and send our troops to border with loaded
weapons and shoot to kill orders this time.

Posted by: KarenKay2009 | March 13, 2009 4:14 PM

Well make up my mind!! You want to take a few months to decide? How many AMERICANS will be hurt in that time? On one hand you and your Democrat buddies say it's a Federal issue and the minute Texas says we'll do something you want to "study" the problem.
Tell you what; When armed intruders cross the border round up those who surrender, shoot the others and stack them on Calderon's side. Don't forget the body count. That way we'll know you're doing something.

Posted by: TexRancher | March 13, 2009 3:57 PM

Texas Gov. Rick Perry should do something about the guns going from Texas to Mexico. The state is suppose to make sure that guns are not sold to criminals or would be criminals. The flow of guns from Texas to Mexico is a big part of the problem and that is Gov. Perry's responsibility.

Oh God now the Fake President from Kenya &
Messiah Barack Hussein Obama is trying to
show us how Macho he is and what a real
military leader and great Commander in Chief Barack Hussein Obama is these days,
by angering the Communist Chinese by using
a US Navy Spy Ship inside China's Terrorial
Waters and Quick Sending A Single Pathetic
US Navy Destroyer to protect it.

And so,now the great military genius Obama
wants to send 1500 US Army National Guard
Troops, most like with unloaded weapons to
help the US Border Patrol secure our USA
and Mexico border. WOW Shades of George
W Bush redux here. As the last time we did
this stupidity then Arizona Gov Janet Napolitano, would not let them carry loaded
weapons or any ammunition for them and so
who is Idiot in Chief Obama's Sec of Homeland Security the Same Do Nothing Janet
Napolitano as we we all call her here in
Arizona and so I have to ask how much more
violence and kidnappings and drug traffic
and illegal aliens and terrorists will the
Bopsey Twins Barack Hussein Obama and Sleepy Weepy Janet Napolitano tolerate
here? It is damn sure time to fire Janet
Napolitano and Impeach Barack Hussein Obama. God Save the USA from these two fools.

Posted by: Karen2009 | March 13, 2009 3:19 PM

Okay so will somebody tell us exactly where
the US Military and Never Served in Our US
Military Rookie Commander in Chief Whacky
Barack Obama is going to find even 1500 Free and Available US Troops of anykind,
Regular Army or National Guard to send to
help secure our US and Mexico Border, since
the majority of our combat units are still
tied down in Afghanistan and Iraq here?
Wake Up America and Impeach Barack Obama!

As many of the comments indicate, there is a pretty deep well of prejudice among whites who live near the US-Mexican border, thanks in part to stagnant wages, anti-union sentiment, and the disappearance of manufacturing jobs generally over the past couple of decades. Politicians like Rick Perry get elected in large part by inflaming those prejudices and resentments ... and Obama's response to his request strikes me as balanced and sane.

Posted by: sarito_n | March 13, 2009 11:04 AM

**********

I would disagree with you there sarito. Dont confuse the medias coverage of the xenophobic groups near the border as the way most people there think about US/Mexico relations.

Most people down there have lived with and have gotten used to the interactions of daily lives between US and Mexican citizens - regardless of what Lou Dobbs will lead us to believe.

It is once the Mexicans and other brown people started arriving in places such as Des Moines, New Haven, Omaha, etc. places in the middle of nowhere where people had never seen a Latin American that it became a problem.

I do think, since the 2nd Ammendment will never be revoked here, that the US does have to do more to stop the influx of guns into Mexico - that would help a lot in the Mexican Army fight against the drug cartels. When a fight breaks out and the cartel has a bazooka and the cops have a pistol, that is not going to bode well.

I do agree with you that it is alos essential the criminalization of pot must be looked at, cartels get almost 2/3 of their revenue through marijuana, not cocaine, not heroin, not meth, not ecstasy.

it's easy to say, but just think, that who pay for the drugs, and who is selling arms to the the drugs dealers.

Just STOP consumming drugs and they will no have money to buy US arms
Stop US arms traffic.

No demand, so, no ssuply

The likely impact of sending troops to Texas border towns to patrol the streets will simply be to further exacerbate people's fears and create even more hysteria.

The more intelligent option is do our part north of the border to stop the flow of American guns and money to the drug gangs. While we're at it, we could take a look at whether the criminalization of marijuana has done anything to prevent people from using it -- I suspect not -- or if it simply fuels the economy of old criminals while creating new criminals to clog up our jails with nonviolent offenders.

"the amount of violence that has spilled over into the United States so far does not warrant major concern"

WTF????!!!!

Phoenix is ranked SECOND in the WORLD in kidnappings!!!!!!!!!!!! Fully ONE THIRD of the criminal felons in our prisons are illegal alien invaders!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the BOZO in the White House doesn't think this is a 'major concern'???!!!

How do you spell idiot?: obama!!!

So,also as another Arizona resident myself,
I have to agree with Carleen1977 as to what
good will it do our border security if
good old Do Nothing Sec of Homeland Security ex Arizona Gov Janet Napolitano,
and Loser Sec of Defense Bob Gates and our
Glorius Incompetent Leader in Name Only
Barack Hussein Obama the King of Mumbo
Jumbo Chicago Con Men,Barack Hussein Obama
follow President Nancy Pelosi's Orders and
send the National Guard back to the USA
and Mexican Border with unloaded weapons,
here in the day of increasing Drug Cartel
Violence and the fact that thanks to President Pelosi,Flunky Obama,Do Nothibng
Janet Napolitano Open Border Insanity which
has turned our 5th Largest US City Phoenix
Arizona into the Kidnap Capital of the US
will end up as the next Pelosi and Obama and Napolitano FUBAR and get a Hell of a lot of US Citizens and Our Unarmed National
Guard Troops all killed and more violence
and kidnappings as well. Impeach Obama!
Fire Incompetent Janet Napolitano!

Posted by: Ralphinphnx | March 13, 2009 10:21 AM

So,as an Arizona resident I must question
why WAPO Obama Shill Spencer S Hsu,the most
pathetic excuse for a WAPO Reporter also
failed to mention Arizona Gov Jan Brewer,
who replace Do Nothing Janet Napolitano,
now Obama's Incompetent Sec of Homeland
Security or is it Homeland Insecurity has
also requested President Nancy Pelosi's
Flunky Fake Co-President Barack Hussein Obama to send the National Guard to the
US and Mexico Border? So just keep in mind
here that anything written by Hsu is never
very accurate and always has a Pro-Obama
Slant to it my friends...Since as Gov of
Arizona Janet Napolitano Would Not Let the
National Guard Troops Have Loaded Weapons
to supposedly patrol the border with the
border patrol and turned them into 6000
US Border Patrol Coffee Makers,Border Patrol Vechile Washers, and Janitors. And that will be exactly what Sec of HHS Janet
the Do Nothing Napolitano and Gutless Sec
of Defense Robert Gates and Odumbo Obama
will use them for this time as well.

So once again we see yet another President
Barack Hussein Obama FUBAR in the making,
as these unarmed Army National Guard Troops
will either end up get killed or kidnapped
by the Mexican Drug Cartels as well.

Posted by: Carleen19771 | March 13, 2009 9:38 AM

Texas President Chuck Norris should do something rather than asking the United States for help. Deal with your own problems.

Posted by: dem4life1 | March 13, 2009 8:09 AM

Another great obama nuance. A state requests help in keeping Mexicans from coming across the border and killing Americans and Obama says, "will present a plan "within a few months" to counter the southbound smuggling of guns and cash that support the cartels." I guess we will be looking north while the killers are coming from South.
Does anyone wonder why banks are still failing?

Posted by: Donschott | March 13, 2009 7:31 AM

President Obama and his administration seem to think that spending money that we do not have is his way to keep people voting for him....WRONG.

Posted by: wendy1231 | March 13, 2009 6:49 AM

President Obama says he does not want to "militarize" the border, yet seems to want to keep about 50,000 American troops in Iraq indefinitely and increase the United States military role in Afghanistan. Pax Americana seems more important, whether Bush or Obama is president, than securing our nation's border.

Posted by: Aprogressiveindependent | March 13, 2009 2:22 AM

I have watched the border situation continue to go bad having lived in San
Diego for years & friends in AZ. Screaming
to me in E-mails they are so afraid and too
old to sell or run. I believe strongly that President Obama MUST take action immediately if this situation is to be controlled for its razor edge now and can only grow in its current state. There is
still hope with immediate action but soon
it will be hopeless just as our senate
and congress are. Having lived through
one depression and looking back I have never seen such selfishness and greed in my
worst nightmare which only makes this situation worse for earmarks are eating up
monies that are needed to keep our country
safe and secure. Thank You.

I thought Texans were tough and self reliant and didn't want or need the federal government in their state. Why don't they just send the Texas Rangers and Chuck Norris down to the border to keep the peace? Are they afraid of these narco-gangs, and want Obama to protect them?

Posted by: rkerg | March 13, 2009 1:32 AM

Makes sense for the President to do this. Mexico has long fallen into the control of corrupt drug lords and something needs to be done down there.

Perhaps "militarizing the border" IS the answer until the Mexican government can get control of its own nation.

Posted by: RealTexan1 | March 13, 2009 12:20 AM

I totally agree. The Mexican drug cartels poise our biggest homeland military-social threat. Send troops to the border to protect our border town and hopefully kill and handcuff some criminals along the way.

I have plenty of Remorse-And I did not even Vote for the Dude!

Neither did the State of Texas!

Sooooo...

Don't get your hope up too high there Governor Perry!

Besides, thanks to Clinton's BONE-HEADED Executive Order making English a second Language(And Reverse discrimination as easy as "Bi-Lingual REQUIRED");

Most US Troops not familiar with South Texas, would probably assume the Border was Norte of San Antonio!

Por Que?
