Tauscher to State

By Al Kamen
Word is that Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.), chair of the House Armed Services Committee's subcommittee on strategic forces and a staunch superdelegate for presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton, is in line for a top post at the State Department, most likely for the undersecretary for arms control and nonproliferation slot.

It had been widely reported that highly regarded arms control guru Robert Einhorn, who had been assistant secretary for arms control in the Clinton administration, was penciled in to move up to that post, but we're hearing he has turned it down for personal reasons. And Secretary of State Clinton did, after all, win the California primary.

Einhorn will likely be named to a senior adviser position on nonproliferation matters.

I'm very happy with this. As a constituent of hers I have never been happy with her economic policies or her policies with regards to political participation but on nonproliferation and arms control she's great.

Additionally, this will open room for a new congressperson. My money would be on State Senator Mark DeSaulnier as he's one of two prominent elected officials in the district and the other, State Assemblyman Tom Torlakson, is running for State Superintendent. The more exciting race would probably be to fill DeSaulnier's State Senate seat. I'm not sure if Tony Thurmond lives in the 1/3 of Richmond that is in that Senate District but if so he would be a likely candidate along with County Supervisor Susan Bonilla.

I have heard the name Nancy Stark mentioned as a possible Dem candidate to replace Tauscher.

Interesting. Now the question is who will run for Tauschers seat. Who will the governator appoint?

It would be good to get this corporatist dem out of the House and off to somewhere else where she can do less damage to her constituents interest.
