Obama Marks 2,000th Stimulus-Funded Transit Project

By Michael D. Shear
President Obama today claimed an early success in the government's efforts to jolt the economy back to health, telling employees at the Department of Transportation that the stimulus bill has sparked a renaissance of transportation construction.

Obama said that the $28 billion allocated to transit projects and highways has already funded 2,000 separate projects around the country. And he said the intense competition among companies who want to work on the projects is driving down the cost to government.

"We can utter a sentence rarely heard," Obama said. "This government effort is coming in ahead of schedule and under budget."

Critics of the president's stimulus bill have argued that it will not pump money into the economy quickly enough, and have warned that too much money could be spent without proper checks, wasting taxpayer dollars.

The president sought to directly challenge that assertion today, saying that more projects have been started than they had projected when the bill passed two months ago.

"It isn't just the size" of the investments, Obama told the department employees, as Vice President Biden and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood stood by. "It's how quickly, efficiently and responsibly those investments have been made."

He added: "Some may have thought it would take months to get to this point. We approved these 2,000 projects in just 41 days."

Bubbette and JakeD are the face of the extremist right wingnuts who will be out at the teabagging parties tomorrow.

These people have chosen to remain in a state of ignorance, no matter what. When proof is given of Obama's birthplace, the wingnuts close their eyes, put their closed arms across their chest and refuse that data, that proof.

It doesn't fit into their need to hate the black man in the White House.

Those of us who put country above party saw the proof of Obama's birthplace right in front of our eyes and are able to accept that, whether or not we voted for him.

Red Party followers put their party above their country, so they reject any facts that get in the way.

When their Fox News leader Glen Beck starts every show by saying "FOLLOW ME", these right wingnuts form a line and do just that.

Only anger, even 6 months after the Red Party lost the election.

I wonder what mental age you have to be to just not be capable of LOSING?

In Colorado, the economic stimulus money is being spent on anything but jobs and stimulus. Rebates on houses and cars, energy windows, health insurance, ect... The Governor is raising auto registration fees to pay for road and bridge repair. "Shovel Ready Projects". Obama needs a shovel to explain this.

One other point. The House and the Senate passed the bailout in one day without even reading it. We have now rushed 2000 projects, that from local newspaper reports are not necessarily what is needed in their region. So fast is not necessarily good. Haste and waste and all of that.

Just an aside, how can the government continue to take over companies and dictate what the private sector does. The Constitution can be pesky on some of these points. Here is a good place to start:

There is way to much secrecy on where the money is going, how much is going out to who, etc. Also, how much crap, excuse me, toxic assets are being purchased by the government? With the relaxing of mark to market there may be trillions in debt being passed by the banks (the folks that own the Federal Reserve) to We the People. When the actual amount of debt that is being "passed" becomes known, if the government allows the data to be accessed which they are fighting, will be a Plonker in the National Punch Bowl.

Hmm, I didn't even mention JakeD in my post. Strange that he should feel it was directed at him.

"For the record," I only respond to a small fraction of his redundant, off-topic posts, and rarely with allegations of OCD. Usually, I accuse him of grotesque cynicism, intentional deceit, and various undiagnosed but deep-seated personality disorders. But often I feel his posts are sufficiently self-indicting and I let them pass. So . . .

"Next canard?"

"Anyone else?"

There's a new video out on Obama and the economy:

If Obama had not mandated using Union wages on these projects there would be at least 20% more money to use for more work to employ more people. But then union contractors would not be able to compete against non-union contractors due to the bloated overheads and costs that come with union contractors.

There is no evidence Obama was born in Hawaii. He could have been born in Kenya, Vancouver BC or on the high seas and still produce the short form abstract of birth that he shopped to factcheck and other pro-Obama websites. So Jake is correct until Obama signs a release and pays $12.00 to produce the vault birth certificate that the State of Hawaii has announced they are holding there is still a question on this issue. The vault birth certificate would include the name of the hospital, doctors that made the delivery and any witnesses. These are all verifiable facts that have been conveniently left off the Certification of Live Birth, or Short Form Abstract of Birth as it is also known produced by Obama.

Hairy, Barry, and the Libbie Witch of the West have probably really come through-For their own! :-(

Meanwhile, in the Red States....

Jake D. see a Psychiatrist sooner rather than later, nothing a little Seroquel can't cure.

If he was born in Hawaii, then I would agree with you.

Posted by: JakeD | April 13, 2009 2:24 PM

JakeD: Anyone who continues to harp on that rumor only shows their idiocy and inability to accept that the best man won the election. Our President IS, and always has been, a natural born citizen. The man was born in Hawaii, and the last time I checked, Hawaii is a state. Therefore, he is a citizen.

You mean like YOU responding to every one of my posts with allegations of OCD?

Posted by: JakeD | April 13, 2009 1:45 PM

OCD: "compulsive behaviors and mental acts that the person feels driven to perform, according to rules that must be applied rigidly, aimed at reducing anxiety stemming from the intrusive thoughts."

Posted by: nodebris | April 13, 2009 1:05 PM

Technically, Obama is not even "President" if he is not a "natural born" citizen.
