Mexican Press: Obama Made Good Impression, But Few Promises

By Liz Heron
The day after President Obama's first official visit to Mexico, the country's leading newspapers toasted the prospect of better relations between Mexico and the United States -- and reported on Mexico's fascination with the man who beat steep odds to become America's first black president -- but noted that Obama made little in the way of solid plans.

El Universal's top story notes that Obama came to Mexico with "open arms" -- pledging to repair U.S.-Mexico relations and continue to fight drug trafficking -- but offered little in the way of concrete commitments.

La Jornada's lead story says that Obama's meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderon was full of "good intentions" but that proposals for future cooperation, such as on an arms treaty that Calderon pushed as a high priority, came with no promise of legislative action.

Excelsior leads with Obama's recognition that the war on organized crime can't be "fought with only one hand." But the paper notes that Obama said completely eradicating illegal trafficking of drugs and weapons is not a "realistic objective."

El Universal's Fidel Samaniego has a colorful take on Obama's larger-than-life status and the ebullient reception that greeted him in Mexico. Under the headline "Yes, We Can, Says FCH" (a nickname for President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa), Samaniego describes the throngs of fans that showed up to watch Obama, whom he describes as a cordial statesman with the grace of a basketball player who has "beat giants, fears and taboos."

Reforma's Web site leads with the headline, in English, "Goodbye Obama!" and has a photo gallery and interactive graphic detailing the security surrounding the U.S. president's exit on Air Force One.

Obviously, people that write these terrible things of their neighbor have never been in Mexico. Yes, Mexico has a lot of problems, but so does the US: a couple of wars abroad, China holding a lot of treasury bonds, a crumbling infrastructure, an aging population and lots of drug addicts. Stereotypes hurt, don't they? I would suggest that people read, educate themselves and travel before making such harsh comments of a country they barely know... Lastly, let me tell you something: You as a country would be much better off having a prosperous neighbor by investing in its infrastructure, than sending dollars to China so they build their infrastructure.

90% of the guns the Mexican gov't turned over to the USA with Serial Numbers could be traced to the place that sold it in the USA - that's whole truth. I can not believe our president said the lie that he did.
I am really beleiving Obama doesn't even like America with the kind of negative comments he's been making about us.

Most of assault guns DID NOT come from the USA.

Go check out the real story people.

NEW YORK - An investment company run by the head of the Obama administration's auto task force has been accused of paying more than $1 million to an aide to New York's former comptroller in a bid to win a lucrative deal with the state pension fund.

Steven Rattner was an executive at the Quadrangle Group, a private equity firm, until he left this year to lead President Barack Obama's efforts to fix the U.S. auto industry. The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times reported that Rattner met with two now-indicted men to try to win state pension fund business.

Quadrangle, while under Rattner's watch, paid huge fees to Hank Morris, a political aide to former comptroller Alan Hevesi, the Securities and Exchange Commission said in court papers filed Wednesday.

Morris and the retirement fund's former chief investment officer, David Loglisci, were indicted in March on corruption and bribery charges. New York's attorney general and the SEC have said the payments Morris collected from Quadrangle and other firms interested in landing pension fund business amounted to kickbacks.

"Nothing screams "I'm an IDIOT" louder than bad spelling!"

And that's why fusion center subversives insert typos and spelling errors in the political posts of those they consider "dissidents"?

Alert the intelligence committees!

vmrg1974 - Lier. 17 % can be traced to the United States. And I'm sure they got those anti-aircraft guns, and rocket launchers, from some redneck in Texas or Virginia. You are a Lieing Liberal mind challenged fool.

Why don't you think a law abiding Citizens should be allowed to have complete 2nd Amendent Rights. I thought most of you Liberal Fools were about rights for everyone. Or is it just for the Dope Smoking, Child Aborting, Minority Racists, and Tree Huggers.

vrmg1974 is a lier or a fool - Only 17 % of weapons used in crimes in Mexico are documented to come from the United States. And you can imagine with the lack of concern from our Government on protecting our Borders, that a majority of these were stolen from law abiding citizens by ILLEGAL CRIMINAL INVADERS.

So a guy who owns guns is letting some 17 year old kid or some illegal immigrant narc steal his guns? WHY THE H3LL DID HE BUY THE GUNS FOR?

Oh yeah, the dumb redneck bought the fully automatic weapon to kill dear on his property 'cos they are a menace - he didnt buy it to actually defend himself from hoodlums.

90% of the guns are coming from the US. All are easily traced back to joints in the VA and the TX kemosabe.

Mexico can't solve America's drug problem, so might as well stop battling the cartels and let the US deal with the drug problem themselves.

Cartels can battel for turf on US soil, keep the guns and ammo in the US, stimulates the economy.

More governmnet spending on police, army, drug rehab would definitely stimulate the US economy!!!

Dumb Liberals including the Obama Administration keep touting that 90% of Arms used illegally in Mexico come from the Evil U.S.of A.

Well they are misleading and or flat out lieing. They have only attributed 17% of the Arms to guns that were registered in the U.S.A. I wonder how many of the registered guns (17%) that made there way back to Mexico were taken there by Illegal Theifs that stole them from law abiding U.S. Citizens. How about some Border Control before trying to take away Second Amendment Rights of Law Abiding American Citizens!

Dumb incompetant Liberals, get your head out of your own rear ends.
